I learned somethin' really wicked today!

I was talkin' to Milo while he was out gardenin' and I was curious if there was any such thing as rock plant ('sides coral) and apparently there's these cool looking succulents that look like rocks!

They're called Lithops! And there's SO many different colors too!

Some fossil Pokémon are a bit easier to taxonomize than others.

This post is about Anorith, Lileep, and their evolved forms, by the way.

Anorith and Armaldo are not a shrimp-like Pokémon, which does sound like a strange thing now that I put this down, but I've gotten into a few spats over this. No, it's not a shrimp, [CENSORED.]

Lileep and Cradily, meanwhile, are not plants. They're very, very hard anemone-like Pokémon. They were rock-type pre-fossilization, so them being this tough isn't a new thing. They were originally classified as coral-like Pokémon, but they're not. They're anemones.

Around 1 am, just as I'm falling asleep, that kid, Bentley, drags himself into the pokemon center.

He gets his pokemon healed, and then goes to find a room. I see him, covered in mud and looking half dead. Kinda reminds me of myself, haha.

Anyway, I get out of bed, tell him to go take a shower. When he gets out, I start applying some first aid to his scrapes and cuts (does this kid really not keep antiseptic on him? what if he wants to train a poison type?)

He's like half-asleep by this point, but he tells me slipped and fell into a pond going after a rare pokemon.

Lileep.

If we're counting Amanda, that's four extinct pokemon that have been roaming around since I started this journey.

I really don't want to, but if the rangers don't end up doing anything about it, I'll step in. Something's wrong.

Favorite shiny Pokémon?

ohh hmm.... this is hard! I think hypno's shiny is fun, i have a bit of an emotional connection with shiny feraligatr (pogo best buddy), jumpluff's is ADORABLE, quilava looks great, spinarak is gorgeous, azumarill is YELLOOOOWWWW, mightyena is just plain good looking, nobody can argue against mawile's slight hue shift, lileep and cradily are both pretty awesome, absol is undeniably a classic! as is luxray... gosh, so beautiful. mothim reminds me of a beach towel (good), yanmega is very nice, gliscor of course, love palkia regardless but the shiny is also great, everyone loves giratina's shiny (i think it'd be better purple, but i can't deny the blue looks fantastic), zorua/zoroark obviously, i also really like reuniclus' line, shelmet looks nice in pearl, heatmor looks badass, chesnaught literally should've been the base form it looks so much flicking better omg, florges shiny with the white flowers??? oh come on she's stunning! clawitzer. mm lobser, gourgeist purrrplll, HOOOPA GOLD!! alolan raichu. DECIDUEYE, toucannon, mudsdale, morelull and shiinotic, golisopod, palossand, the tapus of course, galarian zigzagoon line (duhh), sobble line, centiskorch, sprigatito line, and hydrapple. i love all of them. don't ask me to pick one!

so, i’m not SUPER into pokemon, but i have at least a basic understanding of it, and i think it’s fun to think of which pokemons remind me of my OCs and my favorite characters

Two questions: One, is based not a known slang word in town or is Dielle just not knowledgeable in slang? Two, what slang words do people use in town?

// answering this one out of character, but both! I try to avoid using slang in OBT that might age over the years, partly because OBT is a longform project and slang comes and goes very quickly irl, which can really date the comic. imagine if in chapter 1 of OBT malachi was like,

Malachi: Whoa, Vulpix... You're like, totally not on fleek right now. Wait, why are you yeeting out of here?

// ... and then in chapter 2 (one day later in-comic) he was like,

Malachi: Absolutely no cap Chatot, hurting that Lileep was totally an accident. No shade, no shade.

// there's a 3 year gap between when those chapters take place, which is a lot of time for language to evolve! which, this is a very cringe example and def not how I would actually want to write slang if I did include it lmao. the other problem with slang is that sometimes slang becomes less appropriate to use as more information about it and the impact it can leave comes to light- you all probably remember when "triggered" was a big thing, before folks learned that using that particular word as slang was harmful to people with anxiety and PTSD disorders. I wasn't exempt from this, either! I'll be the first to admit that I've also participated in harmful slang without meaning to.

This isn't to say slang in comics is bad, though! Especially for comics that take place in a certain time period, it can really immerse you in the time period, even if it isn't that far back. A nice example of this I think is the Webtoon It's On, which despite taking place only 10 years ago, really shows off just how much can change during that time! It's a weird feeling being nostalgic for the Wii, haha

as for the second part of that ask, I actually don't know what slang pokemon would use! there's only one language quirk I consciously use for OBT, which I can reveal if y'all remind me in *checks calendar* 3 days or something

🎶Overture🎶 ~ What are some of my favorite memories involving him?: Awe MAN, well I remember a time when I saw him at a distant Pokestop, and I wanted to surprise him. I figured I could do a light-hearted jumpscare by sneaking up behind him and doing a lil “boo!”. However, right as I was about to do it, Annabelle (my Banette) decided to pop out of her ball and jumpscare him instead, which ended up jumpscaring the BOTH of us. Obviously it freaked us out in the moment but LORD it was funny- Other favorite memories include going clothing shopping with him so he could have clothes outside of his uniform, reuniting him with the Lileep I rescued, and literally every time he gets flustered from kissing me-

(Outside of S/I Lore, literally my fave memories are just whenever I encounter him in battle, because it’s ALWAYS a pleasant surprise! He always seems to show up whenever I’m talking about him too lmao, which just adds to it)

🌘3 O’Clock Things🌒 ~ If I’m up late, how does he try to get me to go to bed?: He starts off by reminding me of the things I need to do tomorrow, and how I need proper sleep to do them. If I’m too stubborn to listen to that, he pulls out the BIG GUNS. He’ll start admitting that my presence in bed helps him sleep. He just says it so sheepishly every time, so it works on me, EVERY time.

💥Bang!💥 ~ What’s my favorite mundane thing to do with him?: Going on walks, ABSOLUTELY! We take all our Pokémon (or at least a good portion) with us, and it’s just really fun! I love seeing the lil guys run around and play with each other, and I also really enjoy holding Henry’s hand, of course! Bonus points if it’s a walk during fall or winter, so we can stay close together for “warmth”.

Shiloh looked around, their eyes darting around the room, "whaddya mean sorry this place is cool. its like a mancave. lileep cave. except for sil. i guess its just a cave."

They stare at the fish video for a bit, completely captivated. After a moment, they shake their head, as if snapping out of a fish-induced trance, then point at the egg, "i like the egg. reminds me of an egg."

[Suddenly, a large winged figure appears in the sky. A Tropius, appearing as a black silhouette against the setting sun's glow. A figure, obscured by the darkness is on its back. The Tropius descends closer, and it becomes visible who is riding this noble winged steed. A Toxtricity, with a blue scarf around their neck.]

Lily emerged from her tank and out into the apartment complex's front yard. Her two piercing yellow eyes tracking the Tropius as it comes ever closer. She waved her tentacles in a traditional Lileep greeting that Shiloh might not specifically recognize, but would likely be easily understood as a kind hello.

"That's sick, haha!" She answered back. Could she eat fritos as a Lileep? Well, no time like the present to find out. It was a risk she was willing to take.

Part 2 of the Gen 3 favourites! A big mix from Pokémon you could say are overrated and others underrated, but that shouldn’t stop someone from liking something.

Flying - Rayquaza: I think it would be hard to find someone who didn’t have Rayquaza amongst their favourite gen 3 Pokémon. There’s just so many great things about it - the design, power, story, shiny, mega...it’s a very good snake dragon. It would technically be above my choice for Latias under Dragon, but the other flying types of this gen aren’t great to me (and even have my least favourite Pokémon of all), already used Masquerain for bug and I love Latias a lot so they work better like this.

Psychic - Chimecho: Just something about their design that I really like. It’s simple but not too simple. It’s really cute though in my opinion should have another typing (ghost?) and a buff or something.

Bug - Masquerain: Previously a very forgettable Pokémon for me, but then a few years back I realised that it reminded me of Shinra-Kōketsu from Kill la Kill (major spoiler warning for that anime). I started to appreciate their design more but it finally getting a moderately large stat boost in the gen 7 games is really making me like this bug more. While they wouldn’t have those increased stats until transfer, I think if I decide to replay ORAS I’d try using one. Don’t like the shiny though :c

Rock - Cradily: A really good design and shiny (though I think could be better if it had a purple body to match how Lileep has Cradily’s colours for their shiny). If the Dream World didn’t shut down since I would’ve been able to catch one in a non-standard ball...

Ghost - Banette: I always liked Banette but before the mega came along, Sableye was my favourite for this gen. When that mega DID come out...goodness it’s perfect. I kinda wish it was just a different form or a normal evolution so I could have it permanently. Still, it gave me a newfound love for the Pokémon and my favourite of the generation overall! 

Dragon - Latias: One of the cutest legendary Pokémon, even when including the small mythicals like Mew, Celebi etc. Very great ‘mon.

Dark - Absol: Absol I always liked due to it’s name being the closest to mine of any Pokémon. I remember attempting to shiny hunt for one back in DPPt...their mega design is also one of my favourites and is so gorgeous. I’m still debating to myself if I should use a shiny one or not since I like both the normal and shiny equally.

Steel - Aggron: Never used an Aggron but I do like their design a lot, especially the tiny splash of colour for their eyes. The thing that pushed me away from using one is that typing...while the Mega does solve that, I just prefer the design of the normal one. Still, it’s very good and I really like it as a steel type.

Fairy - Gardevoir: I’ve always liked Gardevoir and not for reasons a lot of the internet likes them and their mega is one of the best designed. I used my shiny one as my starter for Ultra and she was incredible, though I wish I could’ve used her mega during the main game.

Let’s Talk About Pokemon - Lileep and Cradily

345: Lileep

Sadly Gen 2 skimped out on having fossil Pokemon of its own, but Gen 3 delivers! And amazingly, we still didn't get a duo of dinosaurs. Fitting for a region filled with a lot of ocean, they instead went for ancient aquatic creatures. While Crinoids do still exist today, they were more heavily abundant in the prehistoric ocean. So much so that they were thought to be extinct for a time. Undersea “plants” can be some hella neat bases for fictional creatures. Even when they're technically not plants. So it's kinda funny that Lileep holds a Grass/Rock typing.

Lileep's design itself is pretty nice. Some nice colors with a goofy big-head on a goose-neck type of design. And it's got some cute nubby little legs. All around adorable! It's hardly seen using such legs, but it's kind of funny how something fossilized, a process associated with dinosaurs, isn't a dinosaur, but is still kind of shaped like a dinosaur.

Personal Score: 7.5/10

Heck yeah.

346: Cradily

This design is neat in that it gets a little different in flavor depending on how you look at it. For a while as a kid, I saw those fake eye spots as its actual eyes and the, well, actual eye as a goofy tooth. Later on I'd realize the tooth was its actual eye, which seeing it that way turns a rather goofy looking creature into something with a little more menace to it. It's still plenty goofy; still being all goose-necked. I just wish its newly adapted 3D model kept the look of its Sugimori counterpart. Those are a lot more obviously eyes now, sure, but the way the face looked in the Sugi-art is just a little bit cooler.

Come to think of it, these two really remind me of the Heartless from Kingdom Hearts. It's probably just because they're shadowy, black entities with yellow dot-eyes on an otherwise pretty colorful body. They'd just about fit in with all the Creeper Plants and Rapid Thrusters. Only thing they're missing is a little zig-zaggy mouth!

Personal Score: 8/10

Heck yeah, that's pretty cool.

Anorith vs Forest! Anorith hits a Smack Down and reminds me that Grass doesn’t resist Rock. Ah. Razor Leaf does a good chunk, but can Forest survive a second Smack Down?

I won’t risk in. In you come, Lime! Another Smack Down reminds me that Bug is weak to Rock. COME. ON - oh my gosh. LIME TANKS ANOTHER SMACK DOWN OUT OF LOVE TO SET UP AQUA RING! Hoo boy that’s gonna be a lifesaver. Super Potion on Lime! Anorith does a lot of damage with a Bug Bite. Then it uses Smack Down and yeah sorry Lime.

Hmm. That’s a problem. Lilac’s weak to Bug... am I really going to have Cream save the team AGAIN? Anorith does good damage with a Bug Bite and nearly falls to Jump Kick. Okay, is she going to heal? Let’s see. Yep, Olivia uses a Super Potion and lets Cream use Work Up.

Bug Bite again! Cream tanks it and nearly gets a KO with Jump Kick. Hmm, Cream might be able to survive... Bug Bite hits again and well SHIT.

...Fuck it, Doodlebug? Doodlebug outspeeds and takes it out with Draining Kiss. Holy fuck that went badly.

In comes a Lileep. Mmm, Grass/Rock, right? Let’s try Pollen Puff! Ooh, nearly a KO! Ancient Power is super-effective but this little bee fly doesn’t care. Another Pollen Puff takes it out. Good work!

...Lycanroc. Okay. Let me think. It’s going to Z-Move, that I know. I sincerely doubt anyone can take a Continental Crush. So who do I revive while Doodlebug takes the hit? Cream has All-Out Pummeling, Lime has Hydro Vortex but is weak to Rock...

Why is it always Cream who saves the day?! Why is she so awesome?! Continental Crush smashes down onto poor little Doodlebug who doesn’t stand a chance.

Okay, Cream, I believe in you! Lycanroc bites her for worrying damage, and then... ALL-OUT PUMMELING! Please KO, please KO, please KO... HOLY SHIT NEARLY!

I found her so easy in Sun and Moon! Velvet Moon laughed at her Z-Move! Cabbage tore this Lycanroc to shreds! What the fuck happened?!
