My first audiobook is finally up for sale!!

I'm so excited for people to hear it, it's about accidental first contact and it's gay and trans and it was written by my friend Lyra Schneider and aaaaaaa!

The Pier Point Shopping Street is always a bustling hub of activity. As a well-known landmark of Pier Point and an attraction for visitors to the IPC’s seat of power, the shops lining the sprawling commercial district truly live up to the reputation of being a dazzling center of wealth. Food, drinks, clothing. Entertainment at its finest –and everything in-between.

There have been many who’ve lost themselves to the glamour of these gilded streets, luxuriating in the allure of satisfaction and gratification stacked upon gleaming credits.

The young Halovian girl sitting across the table from him in the high-class restaurant does not lack for wealth. Nonetheless, she is not one to consciously indulge in materialistic desires… save for her love of sharp weaponry, perhaps.

Aventurine smiles. “It’s been awhile hasn’t it, Lyra?”

Soft white hair, wide blue eyes. Contrary to her soft and seemingly-harmless appearance, though, Lyra of the Oak Family is anything but harmless. Aventurine would know, considering the manner in which they met each other for the first time.

“It’s been awhile,” Lyra agrees. Then, “Is there something wrong?”

“Wow, it’s always straight to the point with you, isn’t it?” Aventurine blinks, and laughs. Something inside his chest sinks helplessly at the girl’s immediate perceptiveness –for all her awkwardness navigating social niceties, Lyra could also be shockingly observant at the same time. “… What gave me away?”

His voice is careless, flippant. Teasing, the way it would be for a light joke. Aventurine maintains the expression of a smile unwaveringly.

Lyra shrugs, a non-response that Aventurine somehow finds himself automatically understanding anyways. Just a feeling. You don’t make a habit of inviting me to Pier Point.

Aventurine lets out a long, exaggerated sigh.

“Can’t hide anything from you, can I?” He straightens, and bats his eyes winsomely. “Y’know, if you ever stepped inside a casino someday, I bet you could–”

“My brother says no,” Lyra responds without batting an eye, and frowns lightly. “… Aventurine, what is this about, really? Do you need me to kill someone?”

This girl. The blond man huffs, wondering what it says about his own mental state that he actually feels a surge of fondness at this offer from her.

“We’ve got to talk about your habit of spontaneously offering to kill things for people at the drop of a hat,” he tells her. “Have you tried buying presents instead?”

Lyra tilts her head, wings fluttering in accompanying confusion with the motion. “… But I don’t offer to kill for just anyone?”

“… No, I don’t need you to kill anyone for me,” Aventurine sighs. For someone who could be so astonishingly perceptive, she could also be very obtuse. “It’s rather the opposite, really.”

Lyra stills, making the connection in a heartbeat. “There’s someone you don’t want me to kill?”

“Oswaldo Schneider,” Aventurine confirms, continuing to carefully maintain his perfectly pleasant smile.

Lyra takes one look at him and frowns anyways. Then, proving that she truly does know Aventurine a little too well to be good for either of them, “This is an order from the IPC?”

It is.

Aventurine holds no love for Oswaldo Schneider. Even putting aside the bad blood between their respective departments within the IPC… the man had been involved in the negotiations that had taken place on Sigonia-IV, which eventually led to what was now known as the Katica-Avgin Extinction Event. And Aventurine –as far as he knew– was the only survivor from that hell, a young boy who’d been captured by slavers and sold to the highest bidder.

Now… now, he was a slave to the IPC. Which wasn’t so bad, sometimes; nowadays, Aventurine was rich enough to never want for any materialistic goods again. But this did not change the fact that the IPC owned him.

The IPC wanted Oswaldo Schneider to live, and the IPC also knew that Aventurine was friends with the girl who’d nearly killed their rising head of the Marketing Development Department. The next course of action, then, was obvious.

Negotiate. Convince her to stand down.

Diamond had been the one to pass on the orders to him. An additional deal had also been brokered between the Marketing Development and Strategic Investment Departments, and there was a certain sense of vindication in seeing Oswaldo depart from Pier Point for ‘business’ just as Lyra arrived. Vindication… and also frustration.

But, this isn’t something that Aventurine can involve Lyra in.

(… ‘Can’t,’ or ‘won’t?’)

“One of Oswaldo Schneider’s ‘projects’ nearly resulted in my sister being killed by a stray bullet to the throat,” Lyra says eventually, blue eyes focused unerringly on Aventurine. “… I won’t go out of my way to hunt him down. But if I come across him, then don’t expect me to show mercy.”

That’s a lifetime ban from Penacony for Oswaldo, then.

“The higher ups should accept that,” Aventurine nods. “And what do you want in exchange for it?”

The look that Lyra gives him is one of uncomprehending confusion. Inwardly, Aventurine despairs.

“… If it were any other executive sitting in front of you right now, you would’ve very well walked away from this meeting with nothing.”

Lyra’s expression flattens into something unimpressed. “I’m not dealing with the IPC. I only agreed because you’re asking me.”

“And I’m negotiating on behalf of the IPC,” Aventurine reminds her.

“So the agreement stands in place only as long as you do not change your mind, regardless of what the IPC thinks,” Lyra shrugs. As if it’s nothing, the power and influence that she’s handing over to him so easily with this one act –if Aventurine is the one with the final say, then that’s another chip in his hands. Another card up his sleeve. Another point for him to gamble with, and Aventurine is nothing if not a consummate gambler.

“… So again I ask you, what do you want for it?”

Nothing in this world comes for free. No one does anything for no reason.

Lyra blinks, raising a finger to tap at her chin in thought. Aventurine studies her carefully.

“… I want dinner,” she finally says. “I’m hungry.”

Aventurine is no stranger to taking gambles. But when it comes to Lyra…

4. what sections of a bookstore do you browse?

i like to think i read a lot of nonfiction, and i do 100% check out that section, but mostly i just beeline immediately to the science fiction (/fantasy if they're grouped) section lol

6. what books have you read in the last month?

recently i checked out life in victorian england (exactly as exciting as it sounds lol, but pretty decent) and the james patterson book witch and wizard (which is. a james patterson book) from my school library and read them! i enjoyed them both, i had read w+w a long time ago and got the nostalgia from that plus had an interesting experience noticing flaws that weren't there before. meanwhile, the victorian england book was written by a brit in the 60s and actually started out like... weirdly bigoted and self congratulatory? but it definitely got much better as it went on, and didn't distort the facts or anything.

i also read to see the stars, a little indie novella by lyra alice schneider (she deserves support. go support her), and read monstrous regiment near the start of this month, like an october 22 type beat, and that book of course kicked ass. gnu terry pratchett + ily discworld <3

10. do you have a guilty fav?

probably james patterson books like i mentioned above, like maximum ride and stuff. i'll also read a kids book ive read 500 times instead of a new book sometimes ahaha

15. recommend and review a book.

that's what i've been doing and now i'm tired!!!! for the author's sake, i'll recommend you all to see the stars- it's creative, it's queer, and i fell for the leads pretty quickly (there's two, and i really like one of them, melis/meliste). the story takes place on a lost colony, which was founded in the 22nd or 23rd century and socially regressed while everyone else advanced - but meanwhile, humanity was conquered by a federation of planets, which this colony escaped. it's interesting! it's the cultural deviation idea you also find in stuff like generation ships, but with a bigger, more textured world. i'd give it 4/5 stars. it's short, which means it's a nice light read, but they have other books, if you want more!

19. most disliked popular books?

i don't dislike things i'm a positive person <3

i woulddd actually probably say song of achilles? the thing is i haven't read it but i have a mutual who HATES it and also the reason i haven't read it yet is i tried but it just. did not draw my attention at all sorry... i do actually not like a lot of books but the thing is i don't like them because i started reading them and didn't get into them so i dropped them and that's not a great framework for criticism.

13 Has a ship ever broken your heart? Yes! A lot of books when I was a kid didn’t end in the couples I liked (Lyra and Will from His Dark Materials broke my heart so hard!!!!). And, there have been tv shows where the ship seems to be hinted, and then for some reason, the writers don’t go for it and they say like oh they're just friends and I’m like, then why doesn’t it seem like???? (I can really only think of 2 instances right now but Penelope and Schneider from One Day At A Time and Mary and Marshall from In Plain Sight were my jam and I was so disappointed :(((() And then obviously the ships that were never going to happen but you can’t really control your heart, you know? You’re going to ship no matter what.

14 How do you feel about will they/won’t they? I think I really hate it because when tv shows do it they drag it out so much that I end up quitting on the show. But in books or movies, it’s great because it’s a really great way to keep you hooked and wondering how it’s going to work out. I mean, assuming that the end game is they end up together. Otherwise, I think it’s just a huge waste of time to have this whole storyline. Like, a good example of a tv show doing the will they/won't they right are Jake and Amy in Brooklyn 99. In my opinion.

But generally, I try not to get invested in those types of stories.

15 Have you ever “shipped at first sight”? I definitely have! Alec and Max in Dark Angel haha 

16 Talk about a ship you initially disliked. I think I used to hate Dean/Cas because I didn’t get it. I wasn’t really into noncanon ships so I was always confused on why there were so many stories. I did eventually get over myself haha

17 Talk about a pairing you’ve stopped shipping romantically. I don’t think I have one of those. Once I’m in, it’s there forever :)

18 Talk about a moment that made you question an entire ship. I don’t think I’ve had that. I guess I’ve had the opposite with Dean/Cas like I mentioned before. But I think it was reading the stories and becoming convinced by those writers.

Ninguém escolheu a si mesma, mas quatro avaliadoras foram eleitas com votos alheios. Dois pontos interessantes sobre o time nomeado são a diversidade de idades, que variavam de 24 a 67 anos, e de profissões. Entretanto, algo que não passaria despercebido em 2020 é a escassez de mulheres negras — apenas a atriz Adriana Lessa foi escolhida — e gordas. Além dos padrões de beleza, a vida dessas mulheres também mudou muito nesses catorze anos. COSTANZA PASCOLATO – CONSULTORA, 81 ANOS

Um dos nomes mais influentes da moda nacional e a mais velha entre as selecionadas pela reportagem de 2006, Costanza não ficou muito confortável com a indicação. “Era uma época de transição para mim. Cerca de um ano depois, inventei a persona que apresento hoje. Mudei meu penteado, assumi o cabelo branco e passei a usar óculos. Estilizei todas as fragilidades que adquiri com a idade. Hoje, minha relação com as marcas de envelhecimento é tranquila, acho minhas rugas graciosas”, conta. Aos 81 anos, ela trabalha como consultora de moda, caminha pelo menos três quilômetros todos os dias, medita e faz aulas de ginástica quatro vezes por semana. “Hoje tenho muito menos tempo para viver, então busco aproveitar meus dias da melhor forma possível”, pontua. Todas as manhãs, passa cerca de uma hora se penteando, toma muita água, ouve as notícias no rádio e gasta horas conversando ao telefone.

MARIANA WEICKERT – APRESENTADORA, 38 ANOS

No ano de publicação da reportagem, a então modelo veio de Nova York para uma semana de moda em São Paulo e nunca mais retornou para a metrópole americana. “Desenvolvi aversão àquela vida, mas cheguei aqui e não sabia o que fazer. Até que veio o convite para apresentar o MTV Pé na Areia, e depois disso nunca mais saí da televisão”, relembra. Atualmente, Mariana produz reportagens especiais para o Domingo Espetacular, da Record, e não se importa com as críticas por não ser formada em jornalismo. “Procuro evidenciar realidades adversas, mostrar o que ninguém mostra. Eu me sinto muito mais realizada”, afirma. Ela tem dois filhos, Theresa, de 2 anos, e Felipe, de 5 meses. Durante a última gestação, foi diagnosticada com Covid-19 e teve medo de transmitir o vírus para o bebê, que fez quatro testes negativos e está saudável. Não se considera uma pessoa vaidosa, mas pensa em fazer algum procedimento estético para disfarçar as marcas da gravidez.

ROSANGELA LYRA – EMPRESÁRIA E ATIVISTA, 55 ANOS

Rosangela era diretora de uma multinacional de moda quando foi selecionada pela Vejinha, mas sempre desejou se posicionar politicamente, o que a levou a desistir do cargo alguns anos depois. “Na época me chamaram de louca, mas eu estava muito decidida. De lá para cá, sua carreira prosperou e ela abriu mais quatro unidades de sua clínica na cidade, onde já atendeu famosos como Gisele Bündchen, Adriane Galisteu e Daniella Cicarelli. Tem três filhos, Catarina, de 16 anos, Antonio, de 14, e Francisco, de 11. “A matéria não teve tanta repercussão e visibilidade como teria hoje, com as redes sociais. Foi superlegal, mas ela apareceu e logo desapareceu, sem muita comoção”, pondera. Não tinha feito nenhuma plástica até a publicação da capa, mas há alguns anos optou por uma blefaroplastia, que levanta as pálpebras e elimina bolsas de gordura embaixo dos olhos.

Aos 52 anos, Angelita deixou a carreira de atriz para investir em uma nova possibilidade: está no segundo ano da graduação em direito e é estagiária em um escritório de advocacia criminal. Conta que a faculdade de direito era um sonho antigo e chegou a prestar um vestibular na área durante a adolescência, mas não passou. “Fico triste quando as pessoas acham que é tarde demais para começar algo.” Na reportagem de 2006, afirmou que não revelaria “nem sob tortura” se havia feito procedimento estético. Hoje fez as pazes com a plástica e afirma que já aplicou Botox no rosto, fez lipoaspiração, uma rinoplastia e colocou silicone nos seios. “Ser bonita abre muitas portas, mas para continuar você precisa ter outras qualidades.”

4. Soundscape Big Band | Celebrando 20º Aniversário

A big band paulistana lança seu 5º álbum da carreira, tendo no setlist músicas de Milton Nascimento, Moacir Santos e Wayne Shorter. O grupo de 17 músicos é formado por artistas relevantes da cena instrumental brasileira que tem no currículo associações com Maria Schneider, Airto Moreira, Cesar Camargo Mariano, entre outros.

Criada em 1999 por influência de mestres do jazz, a Soundscape Big Band tem a estrutura clássica de cinco saxofones, quatro trombones, quatro trompetes, baixo acústico, bateria, piano e guitarra.

Seu repertório é composto por arranjos e composições de diferentes sonoridades e texturas do jazz contemporâneo, fortalecendo-o como uma das principais instituições da música instrumental no Brasil.

5. Αμαζόνων | Amazonon e Chrysanth Gkika no Bona

O nome Amazonon evoca a mitologia grega, com a tribo das Amazonas, ao mesmo tempo em que remete à nossa brasileira selva amazônica. Este projeto nasce do encontro entre tradições musicais distantes; a música do leste do Mediterrâneo (Grécia, Turquia e Oriente médio) em toda sua complexidade melódica com a riqueza da música brasileira.

Nos últimos dois anos, Juliano Abramovay (Grand Bazaar, Luiza Lian, Orkestra Bandida) esteve na Europa pesquisando e participando de projetos ligados à música modal de diferentes tradições. Agora, o músico retorna ao Brasil ao lado de Ricardo Zoyo (contrabaixo) e João Fideles (bateria).

Juliano se apresenta no violão e alaúde, instrumento tradicional presente no Leste do Mediterrâneo e Oriente Médio. Esta região é marcada por tradições musicais milenares com sistemas modais (Makam, Maqam, Mugam, Dashtag) onde melodia e percussão são os elementos de destaque.

Chrysanthi Gkika (Grécia) é um expoente da Lyra, instrumento de corda tradicional da região da Grécia e Turquia. Aluna de Sokratis Sinopoulos, ela participou de importantes orquestra como a “Mitos” Orquestra, dirigida por Ross Daly, além de se apresentar e promover workshops na Espanha, China e Turquia.

O repertório conta com composições de artistas contemporâneos como Rabih-Abou Kalil (Líbano), Anouar Brahem (Tunísia), Efren Lopez (Catalunha), John Zorn (EUA) e Egberto Gismonti (Brasil), além de composições próprias e peças tradicionais da Turquia e Grécia.

6. Santa Jam Vó Alberta | Especial Califórnia, Nevada e Nashville

Vó Alberta faz alusão à embaixatriz do blues: Alberta Hunter. Assim como ela, a banda desenvolve um profundo estudo das expressões musicais por regiões que resulta numa apresentação que busca a fusão cultural permeando, através do jazz tradicional, o folk e o baião, o blues, o country e o gypsy.

O grupo também apresenta repertório autoral, que consolida a experiência musical de uma legítima jam session. Os músicos da Santa Jam Vó Alberta desenvolvem cenários musicais através de contações de histórias, fazendo dos seus instrumentos (contrabaixo acústico, sanfona, banjo, gaita, viola caipira, violões, washboard, zabumba, alfaia e mandolim) a extensão do enredo musical.

7. Mario Bakuna | Lançamento CD “Where Rio de Janeiro Meets Bahia”

Mario Bakuna é um compositor, cantor e guitarrista brasileiro residente em Londres, com mais de 15 anos de experiência profissional e estudo centrado na música afro-brasileira, samba, jazz e bossa nova.

Ele viajou para a Europa para expandir sua pesquisa, e desde que se mudou para Londres, já se apresentou ao lado de músicos como Jean Toussaint, Liam Noble, Roberto Manzin, Ricardo dos Santos, Edmundo Carneiro, Cacau Queiroz, Alain Jean Marie, Filó Machado e Andrew McCormack.

Lyra sempre foi muito discreta, então se ela tivesse rede social os posts seriam raros e provavelmente relacionados às viagens.

Ela realmente não é muito de dar grandes festas, principalmente se envolverem a família (o que ela certamente evita a todo custo), preferiria com certeza sair com os amigos para algum bar ou fazer uma reunião pequena em casa. Quem sabe um viagem com o Leo? É bem mais o estilo dela.

Bom, temos o Hal, irmão do melhor amigo. Apesar de manterem contato casual e provavelmente mais por educação, o término não foi muito tranquilo, principalmente se levar em conta que os dois tiveram que sofrer por ele escondidos do Leo, que não sabia de nada, o que dificultou tudo. Lyra gostou muito dele e queria realmente que as coisas não fossem tão estranhas.
