Jude Hill in Mandrake. Picture credit: Mary Woods
Young Belfast star Jude Hill is back in new horror movie, Mandrake
Jude Hill, who recently won acclaim for playing Buddy in Kenneth Branagh's film Belfast, is set to make his return to the screen in new horror movie, Mandrake, which was shot in Northern Ireland.
Mandrake is the debut feature by Lisburn director Lynne Davison and will air on streaming channel Shudder, which specialises in horror, thrillers and supernatural, on 10 November.

Mandrake also stars Deidre Mullins (The Dark Mile and Man Down), Derbhle Crotty (Notes on a Scandal), and Paul Kennedy (House of The Dragon) and the cast say that 12-year-old Jude, who is from the village of Gilford in Co Down, regaled the filmmaking team with stories from his time on Belfast.

Derbhle Crotty in Mandrake
The new film was well received at the Glasgow Film Festival earlier this year and follows probation officer Cathy Madden, who is given the task of rehabilitating notorious killer 'Bloody' Mary Laidlaw back into society after twenty years in jail.
Cathy has always believed that every client deserves a shot at redemption, but her beliefs are firmly tested when two children disappear near Mary's farm.

Mandrake will be available to view on Shudder on November 10
Jude won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Performer for this role in Belfast, after landing the part out of 300 young actors who auditioned.
He also played the titular role in the World War II-set short film Rian, which premiered at the 2021 CineMagic, and is signed with United Talent Agency in the US.
Earlier this year, Jude made his television debut in Magpie Murders, a BritBox and PBS Masterpiece adaptation of the 2016 mystery novel of the same by Anthony Horowitz.

Remember… (about Jude Hill) he’s such a wonderful actor. He’s a wonderful little boy, but he’s an amazing actor. He takes everything you say so to heart, and he gives you everything that he possibly can. We bonded quite heavily on Greek myths and legends so any time I see him we always stop and talk about Poseidon for a bit. — Lynne Davison, Mandrake’s director in The Wee Review

Mandrake
Tumblr media
A strong cast and atmospheric direction are swamped by a faulty script in Lynne Davison’s Irish folk horror MANDRAKE (2022, Shudder, AMC+). Divorced parole officer Deirdre Mullin takes on the case of a recently released husband killer (Derbhie Crotty) nicknamed “Bloody Mary.” Mullin cares about her job and wants to help the people she supervises, and she may feel an added responsibility for Crotty, who killed because her husband had almost killed her for having an affair. In addition, Mullin only has visitation rights with her son, while Crotty’s son was born in prison and taken from her. When two children go missing, Mullin wants to believe it wasn’t Bloody Mary but has to contend with strong local assumptions that it was.
All of that could make for a solid thriller, but screenwriter Matt Harvey shows his hand too soon. Early on, we see that Crotty was indeed involved in the kidnapping, working with a man dressed up as The Wandering Man, a devil figure Crotty claims was the real participant in her affair. It’s pretty easy to figure out who the man is, so instead of a whodunnit, you get a whydunnint, only we never answer that question. We don’t know why they’ve kidnapped the children or do much of anything. They just do it. And most of what they do doesn’t seem supernatural. It’s derived from herbalism and folk medicine. The cast tries very hard to make this work, and the scenes between Mullin and Crotty are particularly well acted. Under Davison’s direction, the woods become another character in the film. That’s almost enough to carry you through, and there’s something rather satisfying about the last scene until Harvey pulls the rug out with a bit that’s neither explained nor prepared for. I’d call it a shock for shock’s sake, but it’s not even that much of a shock. It’s just a little whimper to remind you of everything in the film that didn’t work.

Henry VII statue on Bath Abbey by Lynn Davison-Suckow
Bishop Oliver King organised the restoration of Bath Abbey after 1500. The story of the refounding is told on the front of the Abbey in carved Bath stone. King had a dream in which he saw a host of Angels on a ladder, the Holy Trinity and an olive tree with a crown on it. He heard a voice: 'Let an Olive establish the crown, and let a King restore the Church.' King believed this was a call for him to support the candidature of Henry Tudor as King, and to restore the Abbey. These images are carved on the West Front of the Abbey with coats of arms of the Montague Family (who paid for the carved wooden doors) and Henry VII's coat of arms. There are also statues of the twelve apostles, including a large statue of St Peter and one of Saint Paul.
When Oliver King, Bishop of Bath and Wells, visited Bath in 1499 he was shocked to find the church in ruins. Bishop King planned a smaller church, covering only the area of the Norman nave. He did not live to see the result and the new cathedral was completed just a few years before the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII in 1539. In January 1539 Prior Holloway surrendered Bath Priory to the Crown. The church was stripped of lead, iron and glass and left to rot, but it was rescued a generation later by the citizens of Bath.
The statue is thought to be Victorian in origin.
