New York Post business reporter Lydia Moynihan dug into Sinema's campaign spending habits. (Apparently, Murdoch media is not showing Sinema the bipartisan centrist love.) What Moynihan uncovered is both hilarious and appalling.

Since 2021, Sinema has spent nearly $20,000 worth of campaign donations on wine-related expenses alone — dropping thousands at some of the most exclusive vineyards on the West Coast including Promontory Winery in Napa Valley, Auteur Winery in Sonoma and Argyle Winery in the Willamette Valley, according to election filings.

To Die For (1995)

Maybe when David Cronenberg stops your car and tells you to follow him, don’t do it. Nothing good can come of it. Then again, bad things happening to her rather than someone else isn’t exactly part of Suzanne Stone-Maretto’s mental calculus. The world revolves around her, and she is a master manipulator. Gus Van Sant’s acerbic satire speed-runs the Pamela Smart story as Suzanne grooms and uses a trio of hapless teens to kill her husband once she realizes their dreams don’t align. She was made for the television screen, after all, and being on TV makes you a worthwhile person because others can see you. You don’t matter if you lead a private life. As late-night weather reports start to scratch this itch, the flood gates are opened for Suzanne. There’s nowhere to go but up, though in all likelihood her trajectory would be a little more of a flat line beyond the small town scene. She shows her hand constantly, revealing through stolen phrases and dinner mains that rather than coming up with her own personality and drive, she is a collage of influences from others. To Die For does anticipate dirty executives like Weinstein or Murdoch, showing that this has been a problem for quite some time, but took people a long while to be able to bring this open secret out of the shadows. Victimized initially at the Florida conference, Suzanne nevertheless turns around and repays in kind the impressionable James. As her scheme unravels, that narcissism persists, causing her to believe she’s shielded from accountability by a layer of uncertainty in proving her connections to the killing. But what the film has to embellish the events which inspired it is some creative panache in the Maretto family’s mob connections. Janice Maretto’s gut might have been right about Suzanne, but she does get the satisfaction of skating on her grave in the end.

To Die For picks up on its principal antagonist’s media obsession, building it into the ethos of the film’s visual language. Suzanne is happiest when there’s a layer of video grain over her wide-eyed face, and she gets to control the narrative in the form of her white-walled confessional clips. Or at least she gets to try to control it. Others have their say in interviews, creating the feeling of a primetime crime special report or a tabloid. Television shapes James’ fantasies about the object of his desires, hearing Suzanne addressing him directly over the airwaves. But, as she notes, in life’s grand irony, Lydia is the one who achieves greater fame: as she concludes her interview, the frame divides exponentially, recreating likeness her over and again as her story reaches so many more TV sets than Suzanne by herself was able to achieve.

Noticing a Latin market title for the film, Todo por un sueño, made me think about the title itself. Film titles, especially in this era of single-word nouns being passed off as clever or unique when it’s just BARBIE or OPPENHEIMER, are currency. How do you refer to the entire experience of a film? Its title. But a title in and of itself also bears significance. What choices were made in this regard? Certainly marketing plays a role, but directors and creatives can still hold sway sometimes. To Die For is a fun pun, doubling Suzanne’s sex appeal to her victims with a common phrase. The Spanish language title pushes it even further into explicitly Joaquin Phoenix’ character’s experience and perspective, at least when doubled with a lurid image of Nicole Kidman. Suzanne is single-handedly responsible for her own fate, but in objectifying herself or rendering herself a reward in steps, she decentralizes the story from herself through the lens of the title. In both cases, the text can be a bit of a double entendre, empowering or sidelining our megalomaniac. But in a way, the title choice is the ultimate insult to her legacy.

I agree with all of this. Plus, I would say that Murdoch's stiff movements are about as much a giveaway as Watt's uneven movements. I know I over compensate for my lack of spacial awareness and coordination by walking very stiffly to avoid injuries and I over compensate for my fucked up posture by sitting and standing very very stiff and straight.

Also, having re-watched these early episodes recently:

In addition to the above common traits, I want to talk about the "autistics interacting with other autistics" element of it.

Murdoch absolutely seems to naturally have a better understanding than other people around autistic people/characters regarding how to actually communicate with them and he doesn't hold the kind of disdain for autistic people that most other characters do.

(as a warning: I will be discussing this quoting a descriptive historically used for autistic people and others with cognitive disabilities which is most definitely a slur now. I chose not to sensor it because it's important to the discussion in my opinion and censoring it because I think it's important to the discussion in terms of the use of historical language, but I have put tw for the relevant words in the tags.)

In Let Loose The Dogs, my understanding being that Phillip is intended to be autistic, he stims (rocks, scratches at the broom), he spoke late in life (if I remember correctly it's established that he was hyperlexic when he started speaking and when asked why he didn't speak earlier, he said he "was listening"), has comfort items (the pocket watch) and a comfort person (Jess), he's is extremely precise when telling the time, and does quick math. Also, I don't remember it, but the wiki page on Phillip says that Murdoch describes him as an "idiot savant" which is, if I recall correctly, basically what one would call an autistic person who shows some sort of extreme talent (such as being able to do quick complex mathematics). While I maintain that I hate how that episode ends and how cruel he is to Phillip at the end (and while I like the episode in general and have little problem with Phillip being the murderer, I think that display of cruelty was unnecessary and one of the fuck-ups I've noted existing in writing marginalisation), Murdoch shows no disdain or cruelty to him for his cognitive disability and adjusts his communication style to meet with Phillip's. This is something I don't see allistics do all that much.

In a similar vein, in Dead End Street, Murdoch shows Lydia the same kind of respect he would any other [adult] person. He adjusts his communication style and has that full-on conversation through the miniatures. There's not as much direct interactions with Lydia as there were with Phillip, so there's not as much supporting evidence when it comes to "autistics interaction with other autistics, but I wanted to note this. But crucially, this episode actually explicitly put's Murdoch being autistic into canon because when Murdoch describes Lydia's autistic traits to Julia her response is "reminds me of someone." (it might not be exactly that sentence, but it is accurate enough I trust) That 'Someone' pretty obviously being Murdoch. BAM! That's Canon!

I think there's some room for people (who are wrong) to deny Watts being autistic, but Dead End Street absolutely removes any deniability for Murdoch being autistic.

Just my 2cents on the matter, I hope I'm not overstepping with this addition.

Hello, internet stranger. Buckle up cause I've thought too hard about this.

Ok disclaimer I have not really sat down and watched the whole thing for a hot minute. Its past nine, you're just gonna have to trust me this one.

Credentials: Mega autisitc

Murdoch:

Does not understand social conventions. Like this ones pretty obvious. He doesn't understand why people keep dogs. Raises his kid in a completely non traditional way. Frequently doesn't get why people care about something that he sees as not being worth it (sports and popular trends and so forth).

Doesn't like small talk

Cares about justice NOT the law. The thing that really makes me think he's autistic is that he cares about things being just and is prepared to break the rules to do so. The main example being he lets that woman out of prison depsite the fact that he could go down for it. He turns a blind eye to Watts and lets Giles go even though they're both criminals in the eyes of the law. And on the flipside he sends George to prison because I think that's what he percieves as justice (if anyone's seen the bridge this really reminds me of Saga at the end of season 2)

Sees through hierarchy. There are so many epsiodes that play out like "I think Mr X is the killer." "But Mr x is extrememly important and influential!" "I don't care he killed her."

Interest in science and inventing. Look I know we joke about stereotypes but like, its a stereotype for a reason. He builds things with an autistic brain. He uses pattern repition through learning about previous inventions and applying them to his own devices.

Visual learner. This is not autism exclusive but he solves cases in such a unique way that it screams ND to me. Murdoch often literally builds a case. They make a joke about clue/cludo but he literally has to make the model of a house to picture where everyone is. He makes all those model of the ladies that were covered in metal. And let us not forget his famous chalk board.

Buzzkill. I say this as a long-term sufferer of leaves parties at 8:45 syndrome. He does 'boring hobbies' which autistic people often have because we don't feel the need to take up traditional ones.

Remember that scene where he attempts to read out his and Julia's book and just absolutely cannot tell that no one gives a single toss about anything he's saying.

Wears the same thing for nearly 20 years. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Refused to let his wife cut his hair because he didn't want to change from the lady who used to do it.

breather. Part 2: watts.

Cannot read social cues: Frequently insults other station house four people. Pretty sure he called someone's baby ugly but I might have hallucinated that. "You're face is symetrical." Got chucked out of station house because he didn't get on with any of them

Disregard for societal norms: doesn't feel the need to be polite or tactful with anyone or to really follow police protocol. Acts very 'improper' a lot of the time. Only got one shoe shined that one time because that was all he needed. Puts his feet on the sofa, lies on the desk and leans over tables.

Makes limited eye contact.

The man will fidget with anything: Look this is clearly a character decision from Daniel Maslany but its an autistic character decision if ever I saw one. We're talking pencils, cups, fabric, anything. If it is on the set, he will find a way to play with out. And I don't normally like to assign autistic traits onto behaviour implemented by actors but it's basically stimming at this point. I dare you to keep an eye on this man's hands for any scene and I garuntee you they will not stay still.

Disorganised, but not: He always has tiny bits of paper and whatnot in his pockets but always seems to know where everything is. organised but doesn't have to time to be tidy. Same whenever we see his flat, it's equally disorganised. as an autistic person I find things end up all over the place because I don't have the capacity to keep them in order.

Bad handwriting and can't spell

Physicality: Most autistic people will have some sort of problem with co-ordination. He walks uneavenly. He has an odd posture. I always think about that scene where he steps in sick and moves around like a dear on ice. He's clumsy, can't sit straight and has a strange posture.

can't think when being interrupted

can't focus on two things at once.

George realised he'd been possessed by aliens because he was acting normally.

pretzels: dare i say safe food. If not, they're bland, usually the same everytime and take little mental effort to consume.

Strong sense of justic: see william murdoch.

SPECIAL MENTIONS:

Dr Emily Grace: didn't become a doctor becuase she didn't want to adopt a 'cheerful bedside manor.'

Dr Julia Ogden: Married to Murdoch (like calls to like) and sees through the bullshit of victorian society.

Susannah Murdoch: has those two as parents and I have the full confidence of genetics on this one.

In conclusion:

There's probably so much more I could talk about that I just don't remember because there is a lot more of this show than most others. But anyway. Murdoch is autistic because he has to be for the show to work and becuase he often comedic-foils far too close to the sun. And Watts is autistic because there is no way on God's green earth a man who stands like that is neurotypical.

Can’t name just one (you know me, it’s like picking a favourite child), so I’m gonna make it a top five, but in no particular order. Breaking Bad (I know it technically first aired in 2008, but hey, the show finished in 2013, and season 4 is my favourite anyway XD), The Haunting of Hill House, The Crown, Trust FX, The Young Pope

12. Best cliff-hanger?

Not the biggest fan of cliff-hangers, I feel like most of them don’t really stand out. Imma pass.

25. Favourite television villian?

Gus Fring (Breaking Bad), Tywin Lannister (GoT), Lydia Quigley (Harlots), George Warleggan (Poldark; I wouldn’t exactly call him a villain, but he’s an antagonist, so I’ll reluctantly count him as one)

Also, James Gillies from Murdoch Mysteries is my guilty pleasure. He’s not great, he’s a bit overrated imo, but so are 90% of the characters, and at least he was fun.

Either Spirited Away (I don’t remember the last time I saw it, but I remember it so vividly, it definitely impressed me a lot) or Loving Vincent (exceptional and groundbreaking technique, wish the script was a bit more engaging, though)

50. Horror or psychological?

I love horror (psychological horror in particular, hehe), but psychological movie/show is definitely a win.

63. In your opinion, the best character casting?

Despite not exactly fitting the book description, Malcolm McDowell was spot-on as Alex in A Clockwork Orange. He nailed the role so damn well.

Bette Davies as Baby Jane, CONRAD VEIDT in Caligari, Christopher Lee in LOTR, Joel Grey in Cabaret, Joey Batey in the Witcher, Adrien Brody in The Pianist.

Besides many problems with the film itself (the controversy regarding is creator, but also my personal problems with the script), Louis Garrel was a fantastic choice for Alfred Dreyfus in An Officer and a Spy, the make-up and costume department did a spectacular job as well.

87. Tell us about your worst movie experience?

Nothing really traumatising, but some films definitely have made me painfully uncomfortable.

97. Think of a positive movie experience you will never forget?

I have really positive memories from seeing Bohemian Rhapsody on the big screen. Had a lovely day with my boyfriend, we exchanged gifts, the screen room was totally full and you could feel the positive energy, and I left the cinema with Queen songs stuck in my head & revived love for the band.

99. Best movie soundtrack?

The Lord of the Rings!

Looking back on 2019 I decided to list a handful of political / alternative news websites rather than films, albums or books. In the UK the corporate media stooped to shocking new lows during our recent General Election campaign. Such dirty tactics are to be expected of conglomerates owned by the likes of Rupert Murdoch and his fellow right wing billionaires but this time around, previously ‘liberal’ outlets such as the BBC and Guardian also fully participated in the outrageous lies, smears and character assassination against the leader of the opposition Labour Party. The British population were now being forced fed the Establishment’s propaganda du jour from every possible direction. Personally I try to gather my information from as many alternative outlets as possible to contrast with the 24 hour corporate brainwashing we’re subjected to these days. I’ve listed just five sites from the dozens I regularly visit and although I certainly don’t agree with everything expressed on these sites I do feel that it essential that in supposed free and democratic societies we are at least exposed to a variety of viewpoints and opinions - rather than being trapped inside social media echo chambers in an Internet that is increasingly controlled and censored by sophisticated algorithms and where politically correct digital lynch mobs accuse anyone with an opinion that contradicts the official narrative of being a Russian agent! Anyway, a Happy New Year to you all and here’s hoping 2020 sets the new decade off in roaring style!

2019 was far from my favorite year. Regardless, I managed to release not one, but two new double albums by The Flying Luttenbachers (as well as two European tours with the unit) in addition to the usual slew of improvised music gigs and releases, and co-ordinating and producing an archival release of vintage NYC weirdness (Ozone). I also rocked Mexico City with Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, played a ridiculous gig with Encenathrakh, and disbanded Cellular Chaos (for now, at least).

When I become obsessed (or re-obsessed with something), it usually leads to a ton of proselytizing Facebook status posts. Combing my 2019 posts, it seems that my musical obsessions this year weren't very highbrow. Ha ha ha. Yes, I'm super into Xenakis, Cecil Taylor and whatever else, but dumber music can supply great creature comfort, and I guess I needed that in large amounts, so that's what it was. Sometimes badass modernists have to take time out to stay in bed all day and read comics because it's a hard cold world out there.
