Catnip Culprit- black sheep au drabble
Here we go again with another drabble with some cute farm animals. This time with some fun barn kitties. Thank you to @lemyankajuiced for giving me this idea and brainstorming with me who would be the cats in this au.
“Do you think this plant is getting smaller?” Sasha asked out loud as she tilted the metal watering can into the planter.
“The catnip? Marcia never touches that stuff.” Kerri said from where she swept the patio rug. She bent slightly to pet the long-haired white cat that sunbathed on the swing bench.
“And the barn cats never come out to the house,” Sasha said as she glanced toward the large red barn. “Unless there’s a stray coming by around here.”
“Maybe Netra brought over a friend.” The younger woman said while she swept the dust and spare leaves into the dustpan.
Sasha poured the rest of the water into the metal water bowl, “As long as her friend is fixed,” she shrugged, her lips turning into a small smirk.
“You spoil that dog so much.” Kerri pointed out as she watched Anetra trot around the goats away from the property line. “You let her get away with whatever she wants.”
Sasha rolled her eyes, “Oh, hush. I do not let her get away with everything.” Anetra was one of the most well-behaved dogs Sasha had ever known. She never begged for table scraps, rarely barked at outsiders, and could sit and shake on command.
“What about last week when she stole a piece of raw chicken off the counter, and you pretended not to notice?” Kerri said in a deadpan tone.
Sasha’s eyes widened as she looked at her daughter, “That was only one time she did that, thank you very much.”
A few days later, Sasha was brushing one of the horse’s manes as the door to the stables opened and Kerri walked inside.
“I think I found your catnip stealer,” Kerri said as she gave some apple slices to the horse Sasha brushed.
“Oh really? Who is it then?” Sasha asked as she started braiding the mane to finish it off.
Kerri pulled up a recent picture on her phone and showed it to Sasha, “It’s your dog.” The picture showed Anetra’s head in the plant, wagging her tail.
Sasha looked at Kerri in slight confusion “Where is she now?” she asked as she tied off the braid.
“Meet me at the barn once you put Robin back in her stall,” Kerri said before leaving the stables.
Several minutes later, Sasha found Kerri sitting on a straw bale with Anetra sitting on the ground nearby. They were both looking in the opposite direction, facing a corner of the barn.
“What is it you wanted to show me?” Sasha asked to announce her presence. Kerri quietly waved her over as Antera stood to happily greet her human owner.
Sasha walked over and sat next to Kerri as Anetra lay at their feet. As soon as Sasha sat down, she felt small paws run across her lap in a fast moment.
The quartet of barn cats took turns rolling in the sprigs of catnip in the middle of the floor. The ginger and tuxedo twins, named Sugar and Spice, were play-wrestling all over the floor, occasionally knocking each other into the support beams.
Meanwhile, the calico cat, Jax, was darting from each end of the barn, jumping and running on the extra hay bales. The black cat, Luxx, was lying on her back in the middle of the floor, pupils filling out her eyes.
“The dog figured out how to get the cats high?” Sasha asked in her shock. “How?”
Kerri shook her head in laughter, “I have no idea, but this is hilarious.” she said as Spice shook off the straw off her before chasing Sugar.
“As funny as this is, I need to find a better spot for the catnip plant,” Sasha said as the cats started to wind down.
“And maybe stop letting the dog get away with everything?”
“Next time she does something bad, I promise.”

Once Upon a Dream (Roura-Sandkeeper AU 1/3)
Sandkeeper AU is officially here! Aura is a Sandkeeper that helps mortals to fall asleep and monitor dreams, and Robin is the very pretty mortal that Aura (just might) break some rules to get to know her better and appear in her dreams
Thank you to @kitty-padilla for proofreading and giving me great suggestions for this chapter!
Also another big thank you to @imtooobsessedrn for allowing me to use this penguin city dream as inspiration. I hope this is a good interpretation of your dream!

Read on ao3
Aura was welcomed to her evening ahead of her by the familiar sound of the nonstop flowing gold sand. She grabbed a small pouch from the wall display and stepped to the back of the line of other Sandkeepers.
Sandkeepers were eternal beings whose job was to get mortals on Earth to fall asleep and keep any nightmares at bay. Sandkeepers monitored and controlled a mortal’s dreams as they slept.
Even eternal beings had to have jobs, just like mortals on Earth. Sandkeeper just happened to be the job that Aura was assigned thousands of years ago.
Feeling a tap on her shoulder coming from behind her in line, Aura knew who was trying to surprise her.
“Ready for another shift of putting people to sleep?” Anetra joked as Aura turned to see her coworker (and friend). She and Anetra met during their Sandkeeper training and have been friends ever since. They practically begged for their cubicles to be next to each other when they got official job offers.
“I’m just glad I don’t have to deal with any more insomniacs on my caseload,” Aura responded as the two walked up to the fountain of ever-flowing sleeping sand. She reached in and carefully filled her pouch for the night ahead. “I swear they're immune to this stuff.”
The two women walked to the table on the side of the room to securely tie their pouches as another of the Sandkeepers made a bee-line to them. Aura was focused on her pouch as she heard Anetra greet whoever walked up to them “Hey Luxx, how’s your mortals?”
“They’re alright, but that one preschool kid keeps wetting the bed.” Luxx sighed, tapping their fingers on the table.
Aura looked up to see another Sandkeeper working with them for only over a hundred years. She joined the small talk with the others as the three moved to the large workroom divided into cubicles. Before Luxx was about to go to their desk, they turned to speak to Aura.
“Oh, I almost forgot. Boss wanted to see you before the shift starts tonight.” They gestured to the separate office at the front of the room, with the door shut. Their long, dark hair flowed behind them as they spun the corner, walking to their desk.
“Oooh, you’re in trouble for something.” Anetra joked as she bumped her hip gently into Aura, moving her closer to the door. “But I’m sure it’s nothing much.” She added as she went straight to the aisle where their desks were.
A few minutes later, Aura knocked on a big wooden door that led to the lead Sandkeeper’s office. She heard a voice say, “Come in!”, and quickly entered the office.
The Lead Sandkeeper was what most mortals thought was the original Sandman. The Sandman blew powder into children’s faces to get them to sleep at night, for being known for good and evil purposes.
But the actual ‘Sandman’ has been around for as long as time itself, being the sole Sandkeeper for the first homo-sapiens that inhabited Earth. As time passed, the profession of Sandkeepers grew as the mortal population on Earth grew over the past six million years.
Also, the Lead Sandkeeper felt that the title was way too formal to use. She preferred to go by the much simpler name of Sasha.
“You wanted to see me?” Aura asked as Sasha spun in her chair to look at her. She picked up a file off of her large desk and flipped it open.
“I did, yes. Come sit for a moment.” Sasha welcomed her inside as Aura sat in one of the chairs. She peeked at the headshot in the file and saw a young woman with dark skin and long hair in braids. She listened to Sasha begin to debrief her on this new mortal on her caseload.
“This is your new transfer, Robin. She’s an average sleeper and takes to sleeping sand fairly well. She dreams occasionally, but it mostly involves her family and friends.” Sasha explained as she went through the contents of the file. Robin didn’t seem like a hard case, so Aura didn’t feel any issues with her that might come up.
“Who’s she getting transferred from?” Aura asked after they went through the file together.
Sasha sighed and leaned back in her chair. “She’s from Mistress. Robin just had a rough break-up, and Mistress requested her to move to someone else.”
“Why?”
“Because she said, and I quote, ‘I can’t handle these heartbroken bitches’.” Sasha passed the closed file to Aura. “Good luck!” she sing-songed as Aura left her office.
Later that evening, Aura made it to Robin’s bedroom as Robin was lying down in her bed. Aura waited in the corner, looking at the rest of the sand in her pouch. Mortals couldn’t see or hear beings like herself, so Aura got away with standing in the most obvious places.
Some animals could see her, as there were a handful of times when dogs would whine at her to give them attention.
Aura watched Robin mindlessly scroll on her phone’s screen as her dark eyes slowly started to fight to stay open. Robin eventually put her phone down, and the room became fully darkened. Aura waited a few minutes for Robin to find a comfortable position before creeping closer to the woman.
Aura looked at the mortal in the moonlight coming from the window. Robin was much prettier than the picture in her file. Her features were soft, and her eyes were kind and warm when they were open.
Aura remembered that she was here for a job and not to stare at pretty mortal girls.
She took a sensible pinch of sand from the pouch and sprinkled the golden, shimmering sand over Robin’s body. She put more of the sand closer to Robin’s head, as it was a technique that she learned in training.
Robin’s breathing evened out as the sand settled on her, and Aura knew that Robin was sound asleep.
She looked out the window to see the moon’s placement in the sky. Aura had a couple more mortals to visit before she could return to her dream monitors in the workroom for the rest of the night.
After one last look at Robin’s sleeping form, Aura disappeared out of the room for the rest of the evening.
“How are your twins doing? It’s their first night living apart from each other.” Aura asked Anetra, who was sitting next to her. They both returned in time to the workroom as almost all of the Sandkeepers watched their sets of monitors of their sleeping mortals.
Anetra shrugged “They aren’t as bad as I thought they would be. Sugar was pretty easy to get to sleep, but Spice took a little longer to settle down than usual.” Anetra explained as she looked away from the monitors to look at Aura. “How’s your new mortal?” she asked.
Aura glanced at Robin’s sleep monitor and saw the beginnings of a dream. She saw a scene of a city during nighttime start to emerge on the screen. There weren't any people in the dream besides Robin just yet as the only inhabitants were penguins in this city.
“She’s alright, but Sasha warned me that she just went through a breakup. She didn’t seem upset or anything when I put her to sleep, though,” she said as she looked at the other monitors. Only one other mortal was dreaming at this time, so she felt like it had been an easy night so far.
After a few minutes of small talk with Anetra, Aura looked back at Robin’s dream monitor. She saw a petite brunette woman Robin was trying to talk to, but the woman just stared at her with a blank expression.
“Amy? I just wanted to know why you didn’t text me back.”
“…”
“Amethyst? Please answer me.“
“…”
“I-I just want to know what I did wrong…”
The woman in the dream just continued to stare at Robin with a blank expression. Checking Robin’s vital signs, her heart rate was slightly elevated, but it wasn’t showing this was a nightmare. Aura felt she needed to intervene so Robin wouldn’t be so upset.
“I’ll be right back,” Aura said, looking at Anetra.
“Why? No one on your monitors is having any nightmares.” Anetra pointed out and watched Robin’s dream on the monitor. She sighed, “You know that she’s going to have to get through this on her own. Interfering is just going to make a bigger mess.” the redhead pointed out.
“It’ll be fine. I just wanted to give her some closure.” Aura started tapping on her keyboard, focusing on Robin’s dream location. “I’ll be in and out, super quick”
Anetra checked her monitors, looking away from Aura’s desk “Listen, I still don’t think this is a good idea. You don’t even know if-” Anetra was interrupted by a voice behind her.
“Who are you talking to?” Mistress, who was walking back to her desk, asked her coworker.
“I’m talking to” Anetra turned to see Aura missing from her desk already. Sighing, she turned back to her coworker and threw her arms in mock defeat “An empty chair, apparently.”.
How Aura will keep her job as a Sandkeeper will remain one of the universe’s greatest mysteries.
Aura didn’t invade many dreams in her work as she mostly either watched on a monitor or woke the person up if they were having a nightmare. Going into a person’s dreams wasn't something that most Sandkeepers did often, as most only did so if necessary.
Aura looked at her surroundings in the dreams and saw that she was still far from where Robin was still trying to talk to the dream’s version of Amethyst. Reaching into one of the buildings, Aura’s arm went straight through and she slipped inside the façade.
Sandkeepers could manipulate the surroundings of a mortal’s dreams since they knew going into the dream that it was not real, unlike the person who dreamt it. The mortals experiencing the dream itself aren’t able to manipulate their dream, as they still believe it’s reality until they wake up.
Sneaking through the buildings, Aura heard Robin’s voice become louder and clearer the closer she got. Eventually, she got to the building that Amethyst was placed in front of, she peeked through and saw the back of the woman’s head.
Taking a deep breath, Aura stepped into where Amethyst was standing and took over control of the new body. The person’s form that she had taken over was like her puppet, she just had to follow what Robin said and did, and then get back out of the dream.
“Amy? What’s going on, are you okay?” Robin asked her as Aura got settled into this new body.
“Yeah, I’m fine. What were you saying again?” Aura started getting used to moving the new body in a way that appeared natural (or at least natural enough for a dream).
“Oh, I was asking why you broke up with me. You never texted me back and I don’t know why.” Robin said as she crossed her arms and looked away to a nearby penguin crossing an empty street.
Aura had to think of something, fast. Outside of sleep and dreams, Aura didn’t know much about mortals and their personal affairs.
“I think we should see other people, I didn’t think we were working out,” Aura said as she and Robin started walking down the dimly lit sidewalk. While Robin looked away for a moment, Aura brightened the streetlights slightly.
“Are we still friends?” Robin asked her, “I don’t want to ruin our friendship. And I don’t want Loosey to be caught in the middle anymore.”
“Of course, we’re still friends, and I agree that Loosey doesn’t need to pick sides between us.” Aura said, wondering who this ‘Loosey’ person was. Aura found a building with a front door and opened it to what looked to be an apartment building.
“Where are you going? You live in the same building as me.” Robin pointed out as a penguin entered the building.
“I was visiting a, um, a friend.” Aura stuttered out, ready to leave this dream, even though part of her wanted to stay and continue talking to Robin.
“Which friend?”
“I’m visiting my friend…” her voice trailed off, thinking of the most mortal-sounding name she knew off the top of her head. “Sasha.”
“I didn’t know you knew-” Robin was interrupted by Aura going through the door.
“I gotta go, Have a good night, Robin!” She shut the door, sighing as she worked to leave the dream as fast as possible.
“Sasha is your friend now? That’s new.” Aura heard Anetra say as she made it back to her desk.
“It was the most normal human name I could think of!” Aura exclaimed as she sat down.
“But that’s the only time you’ll involve yourself with a mortal’s personal life, right?” Anetra asked cautiously.
“Yes it is, and I’m no longer going into anyone’s dreams, promise.”
