Sir Jim Ratcliffe has proved that a British billionaire can bring an all-new car to market, today launching his ‘back to basics’ Ineos Grenadier – a rugged, hard-working and utilitarian 4X4 machine. The Grenadier, named after a pub in Knightsbridge, is expected to cost from between £30,000 and £45,000 and will go into full production in Wales from late next year. It aims to deliver the kind no-frills 4×4 performance that made the original Land Rover a legend. Ratcliffe, who was named the fifth richest man in Britain by the Sunday Times this year – with an estimated wealth of £12.2 billion – has achieved what the man at the top of the rich list – Sir James Dyson – couldn’t after he pulled the plug on his own electric car project last year. Here’s everything you need to know about Grenadier and how it will be aimed at buyers who have already turned their nose up at Land Rover’s new style-orientated Defender. Grenadier guns for the void left by Land Rover: This is the first model to be launched by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Automotive brand. It’s a hard-working, utilitarian 4X4 in the same ilk as the original Land Rover Series and later the Defender If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Ratcliffe’s long-awaited 4X4 certainly has a very familiar look to it – resembling the squared-off silhouette of the previous-generation Defender that went out of production four years ago. The boxy new Grenadier off-roader was conceived in the pub of the same name in London’s Belgravia three years ago by the Inoes boss to fill what he perceived to be a ‘gap in the market’ for a ‘stripped back’ offroad vehicle that is capable of going anywhere. The industrial-looking Grenadier has been designed so that it is easy to customise and modify so that owners can impose their own individual personality and stamp but also retrofit the 4X4 for whatever task is required. Developers behind the project say it won’t be a ‘jelly-mould’ or ‘pavement princess’ sports utility vehicle, in what could be seen as a subtle dig at Land Rover’s recently launched all-new Defender. Sir Jim Ratcliffe announced his plans to create a spiritual successor to the Land Rover Defender soon after the previous-generation model went out of production in early 2016 Grenadier is a boxy, brutish 4X4 that’s aimed at multiple markets. While the majority of customers are likely to be farmers and agricultural types, it will also be aimed at lifestyle buyers and those obsessed with serious offroading From launch, the Grenadier will be powered by 3.0-litre BMW petrol and diesel engines, though there’s an electric hydrogen-powered version to follow Sir Jim Ratcliffe achieves what Sir James Dyson couldn’t… The arrival of the Grenadier not only comes at a time when there’s a clear void in the market, but also debuts in an unprecedented period when businesses are suffering and global markets and fortunes are being hammered by the coronavirus pandemic. It also follows the well-documented collapse of Sir James Dyson’s own automotive venture. The vacuum-cleaner mogul’s defunct electric SUV has been shown in its final prototype state in the last month, as the British billionaire – who topped The Sunday Time Rich List 2020 with a net worth of £16.2billion – explained why the plug-in vehicle was deemed ‘not commercially viable’ and the project axed in 2019. While the two vehicles couldn’t be any more different – with the Dyson electric car designed to be a luxurious cruiser – the Ineos Automotive Grenadier is also looking to the future of alternative-fuel powertrains. Sir James Dyson poses in front of the production-ready Dyson electric SUV – dubbed project ‘N526’ – which was axed last year after Britain’s richest man said it was not commercially viable The Dyson electric car was a seven-seat SUV aimed at the luxury market. As you can see from thee images, this one-of-a-kind prototype model was at a production-ready phase when the project was eventually canned Despite the failed project, Sir James Dyson has said the cancelled electric car was not the end to the company’s ‘interest in mobility’ The car-making newcomer confirmed there’s an electric hydrogen-powered version to follow. The firm plans to leap-frog into the future with a hi-tech fuel cell that uses hydrogen in a chemical reaction – rather than batteries – to generate electric power. And cunningly it will use hydrogen gas created as a bi-product of Ratcliffe’s chemical business empire to fuel them. However, from launch the new Grenadier will be powered by conventional turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, supplied by BMW. Unveiling the new motor, Ineos bosses said: ‘Engineered to overcome all conditions, it will provide best-in-class off-road capability, durability and reliability to those who depend on a vehicle as a working tool, wherever they are in the world.’ Gap in the market: While Land Rover has attempted to market its new Defender as a hardcore offroader, many- including Sir Jim Ratcliffe – believe it doesn’t fulfill the needs of customers who bought the previous-generation vehicle Grenadier is aimed at a market that’s been disregarded by Land Rover Chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: ‘The Grenadier project started by identifying a gap in the market, abandoned by a number of manufacturers, for a utilitarian off-road vehicle. ‘This gave us our engineering blueprint for a capable, durable and reliable 4X4 built to handle the world’s harshest environments. But it had to look the part as well.’ This gap in the rugged mud-plugger market has mainly been created by Land Rover ending on January 29 2016 production of its original year-old Defender some 67 years after its launch (as the original Land Rover) at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948. Daily Mail Motoring Editor Ray Massey, posing in an original Land Rover Series 1 model The final Land Rover Defender of previous type came off the Solihull production line on 29 January 2016. The new 2020 Defender is being built in Nitra, Slovakia The latest Defender might feature plenty of options that would make it a hardened offroader – such as a power winch and tread-plates on the bonnet – but this is likely to be the usual terrain for the new version Pre-release images of the Grenadier show it being tested in extreme environments and conditions Over the period more than two million were built. It has been replaced with a modern hi-tech 21st century Defender model now on sale in showrooms priced from £40,290. Even to the untrained eye, the new Grenadier bears more than a passing resemblance – in shape at least – to those much loved original Land Rover Defenders which have now become collectors’ items and investments since production ended in 2016. Land Rover’s lawyers – who have already had one attempt to stop the new rival Grenadier in its mud-rutted tracks – are continuing to watch intently in case there’s any potential case to answer for design infringement. But the team behind the Grenadier are confident they have got a winner on their hands. How the Ineos Grenadier compares to Land Rover’s Defender of old and new Ineos Grenadier Expected price: £30,000 to £45,000 Production and first deliveries: Late 2021 Built: New factory Bridgend, South Wales. Dimensions: (estimated. Similar to early Merceds-Benz G-Wagon) Length: 4,700mm Width: 1,800mm Height: 1900mm Weight: circa 2.6tonnes (est) Engines: BMW 3.0 litre 6cyl petrolBMW 3.0 6 cyl diesel Electric hydrogen-powered fuel cell (to follow) Gears: 8 speed ZF automatic gearbox with three locking differentials Towing: 3.5 tonnes Original Land Rover Price in 1948: Around £450 Launched: Amsterdam Motor Show, April 30, 1948 Built: Solihull, UK Dimensions: Length: 3,353mm Width: 1,549mm Height: 1,867mm Weight: N/A Engine: 1595cc 4 cylinder inline. Gears: Four speed manual Drive: Four-wheel drive Towing; N/A 2020 Land Rover Defender Price: From £40,290 – Defender 110 Range price from £45,560 Launched: Frankfurt Motor Show, 10 September 2019 Built: Nitra, Slovakia Dimensions: Length: 4,758mm Width: 2,008mm (door mirrors folded) Height: 1967mm Wheelbase: 3,022mm Engines: Diesel: 2.0-litre 4 cylinder diesels Petrol: 2.0-litre 4 cylinder petrol and 3.0-litre straight 6-cylinder petrol Plug-in electric hybrid (PHEV) version to follow next year Gears: 8-speed automatic Drive: All-wheel drive Towing capability: 3.5 tonnes It is ‘a truly uncompromising 4×4 built from the ground up’, the company said in a release statement issued today Two versions of the Grenadier from launch Ineos Automotive will launch two variants of their own off-roader – a classic 4X4 design plus a double-cab pick-up with an open load-lugging platform at the back. Part of the unsatisfied demand for old-school 4X4s has been plugged, in part, by a rise in demand for large, basic, double-cab pick-up trucks, they believe. More variant are set to follow. Until now only grainy spy shots of the camouflaged vehicle on test in disguise have been seen. Car enthusiast, fitness fanatic and adventurer Ratcliffe, 67, and his team calculate there is still a buoyant market for tough as old boots ‘old-school’ boxy 4X4s – Tonka Toys for grown-ups. They have set out to combine ‘rugged British spirit and design with German engineering rigour’ to produce a ‘capable, durable and reliable 4×4 designed and built to handle the world’s harshest environments’. It is ‘a truly uncompromising 4×4 built from the ground up’, the company said in a release statement issued today. The Grenadier has been created to ‘look like a proper 4×4’ with an industrial design form that follows its function and with ‘an interior that can be hosed down’. Customers will be able to tailor the Grenadier to their own tastes and requirements with a raft of additional features and after-market equipment It will have 21st century levels of equipment land safety systems. Plug in smart-phones can be used for sat-nav and music, such as with Apple CarPlay The off-roaders have been designed as a ‘blank canvas’ for accessories, so customers can tailor the Grenadier to their own tastes and requirements. Significantly not all accessories will be tied to Ineos but will be ‘open source’ so customers can incorporate their existing kit – or cheaper kit from third-party suppliers. But although they aim to ‘strip away fripperies’, it won’t be spartan and will be comfortable, they insist. It will have 21st century levels of equipment land safety systems. Plug in smart-phones can be used for sat-nav and music, such as with Apple CarPlay. Head of design Toby Ecuyer explained: ‘The brief was simple. We set out to design a modern, functional and highly capable 4×4 vehicle with utility at its core. ‘It’s there to do everything you need, and nothing you don’t. Nothing is for show.’ He added: ‘Modern engineering and production techniques ensure the Grenadier is highly capable, but we have been able to stay true to the essence of creating a utilitarian vehicle that will stand the test of time.’ Head of design at Ineos Automotive and the man who has penned the design of Grenadier, Toby Ecuyer The Grenadier name comes from one of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s favourite pubs in trendy London, where he came up with the original idea to launch a new vehicle to market Ineos insists that any broad resemblance to vehicles such as the original Land Rover Defender or the early Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is simply a result of the engineering and physics required to build any 4X4 using a separate ‘body on frame’ or ‘ladder chassis’ and beam axles. The firm’s commercial director Mark Tennant explained: ‘It looks like what it looks like because of the job it has to do. ‘It won’t be cheap but it will be attainable. It’s designed for purpose. Nothing is for show.’ Ineos has identified three main target groups for the Grenadier The first of these groups is utility customers such as farmers, forestry workers, estate-managers, ski instructors, small businesses and overseas charities and aid groups, rescue services and the United Nations. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a showpiece, too. In fact, the second market is lifestyle customers from the hunting, shooting and fishing fraternities – those needing a vehicle to tow a boat or horsebox. It will also target ‘cool mums and dads ‘ who want a family runaround that’s a bit different. Finally, the Grenadier should be hugely popular among enthusiasts who want a no-nonsense 4X4 for fun or as an off-roading hobby. About two thirds of sales will be to lifestyle and utility buyers, with enthusiasts on lower budgets providing a useful market for second hand vehicles. The inspiration for the Grenadier 4X4 Ineos bosses say one of the key role models was America’s original wartime Wilys-Overland Jeep – which also inspired Britain’s first Land Rover – with a simple utilitarian brief and was put swiftly into mass production. Ratcliffe and his team worked to a set of key principles, The Grenadier had to have the following: – A wheel at each corner – Permanent 4-wheel drive – A ‘ladder chasis’ and beam axles – Class-leading off road performance – A mechanical transfer box – A 3.5 tonnes towing capability – A comfortable modern interior – Hose-down capability – inside and out – Ease of repair – A design that was not a ‘jelly mould’ or ‘cookie cutter’ Where will Grenadier be built? The new Grenadier will go into production late next year at a purpose-built factory being constructed at Bridgend in South Wales, which is near Ford’s engine plant that is due to close in September. Bosses estimate it will build up to 25,000 4X4s a year creating 200 jobs initially, rising to 500 in the longer term. Around 100 staff are already with its engineering partner MBTech at its centre near Stuttgart in Germany. A sub assembly plant in Estarreja, Portugal, producing chassis and body components will create up to 500 more jobs n the longer term. Ineos Automotive has bought in world-class expertise where needed. The new Grenadier will go into production late next year at a purpose-built factory being constructed at Bridgend in South Wales Thje new facility is close to Ford’s engine plant that’s due to close. Ineos Automotive intends to build up to 25,000 4X4s a year creating 200 jobs initially, rising to 500 in the longer term Austria’s Magna Steyr, which builds vehicles under contract for major manufacturers, is a partner for the Grenadier 4X4 and is developing the suspension. German car-giant BMW is supplying the turbo-charged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and the eight-speed automatic gearboxes are also from Germany’s ZF, which supplies to BMW, Jaguar Land Rover and more. The ‘ladder-style’ chassis is being built by Gestamp in Spain and the axles are from Carraro, Italy. The project has also poached talented staff with experience from the likes of Ford, Daimler, Volkswagen, Bentley. Jaguar Land Rover and Lotus. Will there be dealers? Ineos has also outlined plans for the sales, maintenance and repair network Dirk Heilmann, chief executive, Ineos Automotive Instead of a traditional dealership network, customers will be able to shop online and via a network of existing agricultural and tractor traders, ‘pop-up sites’ at county shows and agricultural and equestrian events, and at off-road experience centres where buyers can try out the vehicles for themselves. For repairs and servicing it is planning a ‘flying spanner’ service as well as a partnership with a major international chain of repair centres. Now that the covers are off, more than a million miles of testing is planned over the coming year including in South Africa and arctic tundra. Ineos Automotive’s chief executive Dirk Heilmann said: ‘From today the covers are off. Showing the design now allows us to focus on the critical next phase of the vehicle’s development, testing its capability and durability.’ ‘Testing ‘in plain sight’ without the need for camouflage wrapping, foam blocks or fake panels is an added benefit.’ About 35 per cent of sales will be in North America, 30 per cent in the UK and Europe including Germany, with the remainder across Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. 2021 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Exceed Reviewed
The hulking seven-seater Mitsubishi Pajero Sport can be a little rough and ready in its execution, but there’s an undeniable charm there.
I see it immediately: the stricken look on the face of the tradie who’s just parked me in.
You see, he’s just realising now that the owner of the hulking, bullbar-wearing 2021 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport he’s parked dangerously close to isn’t, in fact, a fellow tradie, but a pregnant woman with a broken foot.
It’s too late, though – he can’t very well admit he profiled me based on my car, and can only compensate me with a sheepish smile and the good grace to avert his eyes as I desperately try to get my very big car out of a very small space.
At its core, the seven-seater Pajero Sport is an affordable family car, but it feels like it might be better suited to the kinds of families that regularly tow a boat, own a full wardrobe of Driza-Bones or holiday on a cattle farm.
That’s probably because this makes no secret of being the SUV version of the Triton ute, with utilitarian styling, a comfortable but basic cabin, and serious ride height and heavy handling. Plus, the car I’m testing here is fitted with an imposing black bullbar.
The Exceed variant on test starts at R 704,995 (including admin costs), and offers diesel power by way of its 2.4-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.
The four-wheel-drive system allows you to switch between drive modes for optimal traction – from rear-wheel drive to on-road high-range four-wheel drive, to four-wheel drive with a locked centre differential in high-range and low-range for heavy-going.
There’s also a drive-mode selector with the option of gravel, mud, snow, sand or rock.
South Africa is reasonably well served for big, booming, body-on-frame, diesel off-roaders, including the Mitsubishi Pajero.
As far as top-spec offerings in this class go, the Mitsubishi is relatively affordable, particularly when compared with the Ford and the Toyota.
However, the other brands are worth checking out in tandem with Mitsubishi, as you might find they provide a bit more standard equipment and a more premium feel in the cabin for your spending.
Getting into the car is an exercise in athleticism, with some vaulting required to get oneself up and into the driver’s seat, greatly aided by the grab handles littered around the car’s interior. Conversely, getting out is easier, and you’ll find yourself sliding or jumping out of the driver’s seat in a cavalier fashion in no time.
Once you’re up on the proverbial throne, it feels like you’ve entered another zone entirely. You’re able to make eye contact with dual-cab ute owners and small-truck drivers, and even offer them a knowing wave.
The rear windshield is nice and tall, so you get a greater depth of view at the back, while the side mirrors are huge, meaning side visibility is excellent, too.
However, I relied heavily on the 360-degree camera that’s exclusive to the Exceed grade – and can admit that at times I would have been lost without it, particularly when parking. The view provided to the driver is a composite of a CGI-generated image of the car, paired with real-time footage from cameras placed around the vehicle.
The height of the car – it has 218mm of ground clearance – also means you don’t have to worry about kerbs or raised sections of road.
In the driver’s seat, the car has a comfortable, utilitarian vibe, with the Exceed offering a solid amount of equipment and technology, and a few measured attempts at offering a 'premium' feel.
You’d never accuse it of being luxurious, but the heated leather seats are smooth and practical with understated stitching, and the dash is accented with black gloss plastic and silver trim that keeps things looking polished.
A sizeable centre console houses two cupholders and three USB ports – two compatible with smartphones.
Hit the push-button start and there’s no mistaking this is a diesel car – the grumbling, rumbling feel in the cabin and the dull roaring noise is immediate when you’re idling, but it does tend to level out as the car gets moving.
Straight out of the gate, you’re likely to notice the steering – for me personally, it was arguably the most noteworthy feeling during my time in the Pajero Sport, and something that takes some serious getting used to.
In short: it’s notably heavy and takes brawn to manage, especially in smaller streets. However, I’m more accustomed to medium SUVs and hatchbacks with a light steering feel, so the Pajero Sport definitely felt very ute-y to me (and dual-cab owners might feel right at home).
Swinging out of parallel parks, I found I had to muster as much of my meagre upper body strength as possible to haul the big Mitsi into line.
The eight-speed transmission does a nice job of effectively shifting through gears without any hesitation or fidgeting. Meanwhile, the engine offers up 133kW of power and 430Nm of torque, and while it handles low-speed traffic well, it can feel somewhat lethargic with moderate to high throttle input.
Still, there’s ample capacity there, it performs well under pressure and it never feels underpowered – it’s just lacking that punchy, peppy feeling in the middle to upper range of acceleration. That’s not necessarily a mark against the car, however, given you’re unlikely to feel much like putting your foot down or speeding around bends.
Much of this is to do with the ride height and suspension feel, which can equate to a top-heavy, wobbly sensation when taking corners or driving over larger bumps at speeds of over 50km/h.
Otherwise, it remains a composed and comfortable car, and I feel a little bit like the princess in The Princess and the Pea by complaining about any discomfort, given you’re so far removed from the road it’s tricky to ascertain any irregularities at lower speeds.
While I didn’t venture off-road for long, dirt roads and some hilly, unpaved areas in the bush were no issue for the Pajero Sport – especially in 4H mode, which allows the car to operate in full-time four-wheel drive.
I was particularly impressed with the fuel consumption of the Pajero Sport. Around town, it sat bang on the quoted 8.0L/100km on a combined cycle, and with more freeway driving in the mix that quickly dropped to a low 7.2L/100km, which I felt was very respectable for a car of its size.
That’s a win because good fuel consumption is likely a major reason to buy a diesel car. The other key reason you’re looking at this car is cabin space, and on that front, the Pajero Sport has positives and negatives.
The middle row is well equipped with a 150W socket, two USB ports, roof-mounted air vents and an armrest with cupholders.
It’s nice and roomy in there for two people, with plenty of knee room even for lofty folks – although taller people (six-foot and above) might find their head hits the roof because the bench sits quite high in the car. Unfortunately, the middle seat in the second row is a bit narrow, so sitting three across as adults might compromise elbow room.
There are only three spots for child seats in the Pajero Sport, with ISOFIX anchorage points on each of the outboard seats in the second row, and three top-tether restraints over the back of the middle row. That means the third row can only be used for children who don't require car seats.
Obviously, the Pajero Sport is a three-row car, but getting all three rows into place with enough room for all occupants can be a bit of a logistical struggle. I found that everything didn’t fit that neatly together. Having the third row flat with the second row in action requires you to shift the middle row forward in order for things to feel well spaced.
Once again, as a woman lacking in upper body strength, I would have appreciated some electronic levers to adjust the rear rows, given the manual tabs and pulls in both the middle row and the rear row can take a bit of gusto to use (not to mention a bit of back-and-forth action to get everything where you want it).
Getting into the third row is easiest when you fold the middle-row seats forward and in half to create a clear path of entry. Once you’re in there, third-row legroom and headroom aren’t all that bad, and the sizeable windows prevent it from feeling dark and cramped.
If you want maximum cargo capacity, it is possible to fold the back two rows to create a positively cavernous compartment, but the floor isn’t entirely flat, with a slight downhill slant.
The Pajero Sport offers a full-size spare wheel under the floor and a solid – if not overachieving – list of standard equipment.
There’s active cruise with distance control, lane-change assist (which sounds an alarm if you’re veering into another vehicle but errs on the subtle side), front-seat heaters, the aforementioned overhead camera with rear sensors, and an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
A small complaint – the car never remembered my phone when pairing with Apple CarPlay, ignoring my ‘always enable’ prompts and asking for authentication every time I plugged it in (I had the same issue with my last Mitsubishi, too).
It’s missing any form of active lane-keeping or lane-tracing to keep you centred, and there’s no head-up display, but a large digital speedometer in the centre of the driver display is large enough to compensate.
There’s also autonomous emergency braking but, fair warning, I found it quite terrifying – sounding a loud alarm and slamming the brakes on in traffic when I came a little close to a car in front at a low speed.
Mitsubishi's 10-year, 200,000km warranty is a drawcard for anyone happy to service exclusively within the Mitsubishi dealer network, but those who want to use their own mechanic will receive five years or 100,000km.
Despite initially taking issue with some of the Pajero’s less refined qualities – the steering, the fiddly rear rows, that trademark diesel grumble – I came away surprisingly charmed by this car.
It’ll have you feeling like you can tackle a rocky mountain outcrop at a moment’s notice, squeeze in a mountain of rubbish, furniture or gardening goods without fretting about space or mess, take your family (and pets) away for a weekend in the country, or simply amble around town without blowing your budget on fuel or contending with kerbs and potholes.
And even if you don’t require that bullbar around town, it adds a certain aesthetic edge (and some strong tradie energy).

Halls Creek (almost) to Katherine, 15-17 June
Tuesday, 15 June
We were preparing the van to move on when I got a call from Toyota in Katherine where I had made an online booking on Friday night for a car service. They have a 7-week waiting list – do I want to add our car to the list? No thank you, I will look elsewhere. I tried Toyota in Kununurra – their wait-list is only a bit over 6 weeks – but again, no thanks! I hadn’t tried Halls Creek where we had the car in a few days ago because they had told me that their mechanics were out of town so their workshop would be closed all week. I just rang them to see if they had any other suggestions and they said it was an easy service and one mechanic was there who could do the job if we came in at 1pm. They had fewer bookings because their main mechanics were away so we got in without delay. They had already promised to make time to replace an Anderson Plug on the van for us as we left town so it was easy to add the service too. We were delighted to get the service done: a few hundred clicks earlier than necessary, but certainly better than 4 or 5000 clicks over given the nature of our travels.
As soon as the service was complete and we had let some air out of our tyres, we topped up with fuel and hit the road at 3.15 pm. We were heading out on the Duncan Road – yet another iconic stock route, very bumpy with steep, deep dips and crests and constant corrugations, but not as horrific as some we have driven recently. Our maximum speed was restricted to about 55 to 60 kph due to the dips – as well as quite a few rough water crossings.
We passed the China Wall as soon as we were on the gravel but didn’t get out of the car – just stopped and looked. We visited it more closely last time we were here – while waiting to get the van towed to Kununurra to get its axle replaced. It is a remarkable white quartz wall up to 6 metres high that runs for over 100 kilometres in a more-or-less straight line – amazing stuff, but we were suitably amazed 4 years ago and kept driving. A little further on was Old Halls Creek that we also explored at length last time we were here. It is the site of the original township and is quite extensive (probably a bit bigger than Farina that I discussed in a post several weeks ago), some of it is moderately well preserved, but most of it is just dilapidated ruins or worse. Once the residents leave and it becomes a tourist destination, there is obviously no reason to spend money on maintenance so the whole edifice collapses – if it didn’t, I am not sure how many tourists would bother visiting. Again, we stopped and looked from the Road, but then kept going.
We only did 42 kilometres for the day and camped in wonderful gravel pit. (We have had some wonderful nights in gravel pits!!!) We were expecting to find a place called Palm Springs (hopefully, with no luxury high-rises, 5-car garages and casinos) but saw an inviting side road that took us out of sight of the main track and we camped there for the night. It was very special! I went for a walk to the top of a craggy hill near the caravan to take some photos and saw some Rainbow Bee-eaters among other things. The whole area is covered with green spinifex so walking is sometimes painful, but the view was certainly worth it. The gravel pit was in a green valley (almost lush by local standards) with a spectacular red stone ridge and associated cliff running for at least a kilometre above it. Quite beautiful.
We sat outside for our Happy Hour with an excellent red, great nibbles, a fantastic sunset, extraordinary fishbone clouds and superb company, surrounded by birdsong in some of the most specky country we have seen. We were looking at the silhouette of a beautiful drooping tree just in front of us when the skyline behind it started to move – and a big old kangaroo hopped from centre stage to exit right! A cool breeze, glorious solitude (except for the world’s most wonderful lover), a velvet sky splashed with glittering diamonds, embedded in nature…….. How could it possibly get any better?
Wednesday, 16 June
We woke a little later than usual for some reason. It was almost full light when I opened my eyes and a wake-up coffee was soon on the way. We both seemed a little reluctant to start the day so sat up in bed and did more than our usual quota of puzzles - but all good things must come to an end and time and breakfast waits for no man.
We ate and did the dishes and were all ready to go when we decided to explore the area a little more as I did last night before moving on. We climbed the nearby hill again, eschewing the spinifex with only moderate success and we were on our way again.
The whole area is a hodgepodge of red stony ridges, green spinifex, beautiful white-trunked (and other) trees, picturesque lumpy hills popping out of the plain at random, rolling pastoral country, craggy rocks – a truly wonderful place to visit. No wonder so many people come to visit and never go home.
After only a couple of kilometres, we found the place we had been looking for the previous evening – Palm Springs! Not too glitzy, but a lovely little area at the side of the road with a very small creek fed by a very small waterfall (one of the springs?), but with enough birds to keep me busy for half an hour or so. The Yellow-tinted Honeyeaters were the best.
It was a great little area and we took a few pics, but we still think our hidden camping spot out of sight of the road last night was better. It gave us some wonderful privacy, and solitude that we wouldn’t have had immediately beside the roadway at Palm Springs.
A few clicks further on, we saw the turnoff to Sawpit Gorge so off we went. It was only four kilometres in - but four kilometres back out again with virtually nowhere to turn around. (Reversing the caravan 4 clicks on that terrain was simply not an option!!!) We did all sorts of manoeuvres to turn the car and van around – and then undid them all when we couldn’t quite get around without completely jack-knifing the rig. We eventually backed far enough into a partially cleared spot to turn around and off we went without exploring the Gorge at all. We were just glad to be out of there after the trauma of turning the van around. Then, perhaps a hundred metres up the hill, we found a place where we could have parked and turned relatively easily, but there were no warning signs and then it was too late.
This whole area is spectacular. It is very hilly with hundreds of dramatic rocky jump-ups, often heavily vegetated and with beautiful, graceful trees. There is a lot of vicious spinifex, but also extensive areas of softly-waving grassy fronds. For kilometres, there was a uniform mantle of soft creamy 30-centimetre high grass, interspersed every 3 or 4 metres with a 2-metre spike of some sort of recently-deceased reeds. The topography was outstanding: colourful rocky outcrops, undulating hills and steep cliffs, but the trees and grasses were also quite arresting – so different from what we are accustomed to.
The rest of the day was fairly uneventful. After yesterday’s bumpy drive with dips and crests, the road improved. It was still very corrugated with rocky patches and numerous shallow creek crossings – deepest probably 35-40 cm deep – but we were still rarely up to 60 kph maximum. We eventually reached the point where Duncan’s Road turned north and where we turned south onto another stock route, the Buntine Highway – hardly recognisable as a highway, consistently corrugated and sometimes barely wheel-track wide. This track took us back into the Northern Territory again with no Quarantine or Covid notices – but they came a little later.
We only drove 200 kilometres for the day and camped just off the road near a windmill and bore and sat outside the van with cold drinks and nibbles as the sun went down and the heat of the day was blown away by a gentle cooling breeze. There was a bit of dust in the van but not too bad and we are looking forward to some bitumen and slightly faster speeds tomorrow afternoon.
Thursday 17 June
So much for faster speeds! It was pretty rough for half the day, but it certainly improved once we hit the bitumen – not too hot in some places, barely wheel-track wide, but it improved the further we went.
As to internet speeds, the opposite occurred. We had a good signal at Kalkaringi but no signal at all in Top Springs tonight and the people in the Roadhouse say that Vodaphone is the only provider that covers this area. Good old Telstra fails again.
So where are we and how did we get here? We are in Top Springs at the intersection of yet another
part of the Binns Track (part of the Savannah Way that we drove end-to-end four years ago) and the Buntine Highway (aka the Buntine Goat-track in places).
We drove 330 kms today, half on gravel (superb to terrible at times) and half on often quite poor bitumen, mostly barely wide enough to keep all wheels on the paved surface. Almost all drivers we saw today were really good though, getting completely off the road to give us priority - something I have tried to do most of the time, but have rarely seen others doing it before today. It is far better to vacate the road, even to stop, and let the oncoming maniacs roar through on the bitumen than to drive into the wall of stones thrown up by them. And depending on wind direction (why is it always blowing into my side of the car?), we have to stop for up to 30 seconds every time a car passes anyway so we can see the way forward and not drive into a possible second oncoming vehicle.
Today, we drove quite a few kilometres at 20 kph or less due to the vicious corrugations. Faster than that and I had no control at all. The brakes were entirely ineffective and the steering wasn’t much better because no two wheels were on the road at any time. It was horrendous until we got to the roadworks where two graders were carving out a beautifully smooth passage for us, albeit on the wrong side of the road - but out here, there is rarely a right side: the right side is the one that’s not quite as bad as the other side, i.e., the side that everyone uses. Of course, that changes frequently, so we zigzagged back and forth (as did any other vehicles), just hoping that we didn’t zig when we should have zagged or vice versa.
We drove through another area of dramatic jump-ups – small sharp hills erupting out of entirely flat grasslands. I mentioned The Granites on the Tanami and a possible extension of them on the way to Halls Creek and we encountered another similar few square kilometres again today.
We ate our lunch at Kalkaringi, formerly Wave Hill, where we tried unsuccessfully to find a workshop to which we were directed to put a bit more air in our tyres - so we drove the next 170 kms with slightly lower pressures than intended. We also tried to find the Police to comply with the requirement to complete a Covid form immediately we crossed back into the NT but the local cop was out of town. Next cop will be in Katherine tomorrow, but maybe by then, the urgency to complete the form may have abated. (And it had! Approaching Katherine there was a roadside sign asking interstate travellers coming from a declared hotspot to ring the local health authorities – nothing more!)
One good thing about Kalkaringi was the strong internet signal that allowed us to download close to 50 emails each while we ate our lunch, very few of which warranted any action.
We then drove on to Top Springs – bitumen all the way and set up behind the Roadhouse with good water, hot and cold showers, power, but no internet. We were hot and dusty so went for a drink at the Roadhouse bar and the barman recognised us. We had been chatting with him and his girlfriend, backpackers from Germany, when we were all exploring the Henbury Craters south of Alice six weeks or so ago. It is a small world and we may cross paths again on our way back west.
It was great to have a shower and to plug the fridges into AC power overnight as well as mains pressure water. And I even added a couple of bird species to our trip list. It currently stands at 137 including six additions to our Life-list.
Despite our drink in the bar (and one in the van with the fan on), we were still hot so we ate our dinner outside, augmented with some hot chips straight from the bar. They cooked a batch specially for us, all double-fried, and just enough for 3 meals each.
And after dinner we watched the very final episode of White Collar, all six series of which have accompanied us most nights since we left home. We enjoyed the series and I am delighted to report that ‘the gooduns won’.
That just left us with an easy run into Katherine tomorrow, but I will leave that for another post.

JEEP
Jeep is a brand of American automobiles that is a division of FCA US LLC (formerly Chrysler Group, LLC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Jeep has been a part of Chrysler since 1987, when Chrysler acquired the Jeep brand, along with remaining assets, from its previous owner: American Motors Corporation (AMC). Jeep's current product range consists solely of sport utility vehicles and off-road vehicles, but has also included pickup trucks in the past. Some of Jeep's vehicles, such as the Grand Cherokee and the Wagoneer, reach into the luxury segment. Jeep sold 1.4 million SUVs globally in 2016, up from 500,000 in 2008,[4][5] two-thirds of which in North America,[6] and was Fiat-Chrysler's best selling brand in the U.S. during the first half of 2017. In the U.S. alone, over 2400 dealerships hold franchise rights to sell Jeep-branded vehicles, and if Jeep were spun off into a separate company, it is estimated to be worth between $22 and $33.5 billion — slightly more than all of FCA (US).
Prior to 1940 the term "jeep" had been used as U.S. Army slang for new recruits or vehicles, but the World War II "jeep" that went into production in 1941 specifically tied the name to this light military 4x4, arguably making them the oldest four-wheel drive mass-production vehicles now known as SUVs. The Jeep became the primary light 4-wheel-drive vehicle of the United States Army and the Allies during World War II, as well as the postwar period. The term became common worldwide in the wake of the war. Doug Stewart noted:"The spartan, cramped, and unstintingly functional jeep became the ubiquitous World War II four-wheeled personification of Yankee ingenuity and cocky, can-do determination." The Jeep marque has been headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, ever since Willys-Overland launched production of the first CJ or Civilian Jeep branded models there in 1945. Its replacement, the conceptually consistent Jeep Wrangler series, remains in production since 1986. With its solid axles and open top, the Wrangler has been called the Jeep model that is as central to the brand’s identity as the rear-engined 911 is to Porsche.
At least two Jeep models (the CJ-5 and the SJ Wagoneer) enjoyed extraordinary three-decade production runs of a single body generation. Jeeps have since the war inspired a number of other light utility vehicles, such as the Land Rover. Many Jeep variants serving similar military and civilian roles have since been designed in other nations. In lowercase the term "jeep" continues to be used as a generic term for vehicles inspired by the Jeep that are suitable for use on rough terrain.
