THIS ARE SOME EXERPTS FROM THIS SOO SPECIAL BOOK, WRITTEN IN A SIMPLE WAY BY GLORIA RHOADS BERLIN, THE PERSON WHO HELPED MJ TO FIND HIS “NEVERLAND”... READING ON TWITTER THAT NEVERLAND WAS SOLD, MADE ME GO BACK TO THIS BOOK, WHICH I READ SADLY SOBBING ...
“I received an act of kindness a few months back. I was waiting on this book and it sold within minutes! After a quick exchange about the book and our realization that it was Kim Franks Sinclair who bought the book that I was waiting on, she sent it to me after she read it as a gift 🥰 I finally got to this book since the sale and want to share a few excerpts from “IN SEARCH OF NEVERLAND”... — Tammy Lynn Gauthier to Kim Franks Sinclair ...
“What I know that other people may not know is that Michael Jackson was extremely spiritual and religious. It was on this very same day that Michael shared the most intimate side of his life with me as we walked holding hands over gurgling creeks, rocks and logs sometimes leaping instead of just walking. When we sat down to rest for a few minutes, Michael turned around with his head bowed in prayer and asked me, “Gloria will you please recite the Lord’s Prayer with me?” While everyone else was racing around asking several questions of the ranch manager, we sat quietly and prayed. We prayed together over each structure on the property.
On the second day we woke up at the ranch, it was as if Michael had awakened in Las Vegas. He started talking about the placement of the merry-go-round and where the Ferris wheel would go. And the horses, he could have real horses for kids to ride. There would be a special Disneyland-style train traveling around the ranch because some of them would not be able to walk or run. The children certainly couldn’t go throughout the entire ranch on foot, since there’s quite a lot of walking to a 2,700 acre ranch. Michael was placing these luxurious rides aloud.
During our stay at the ranch, Michael was bubbling over, like a volcano full of energy, with dreams and plans as to what he was going to do with the place. He talked about how he was going to make it into a sanctuary for children in need, for his beloved animals, and for himself. Michael felt he should build special cages for animals and hire animal keepers to protect them. It was important the animals be treated according to their specific needs.
On the third day, Michael and I were walking around the ranch when he decided to hug a tree, and to jump around and leap up over different plants and fences. He was really wonderful and should have been an acrobat. He was so full of energy – always singing and dancing around. As he danced around me, he asked me to close my eyes, and I did as he asked. “Now”, he said “try to imagine the most beautiful circus you’ve ever attended and the most beautiful park and animal zoo. Try to picture it and describe it to me. Tell me what I ought to do and how I should begin all of this.” I said, “Michael, I don’t have the same imagination you have. I would have to sit down and draw something and try to figure it out like a crossword puzzle. I’m not as agile as you. I’m thinking about the practicality of your owning such a large place by yourself with all of the expenses involved, every cage and everything you want do costs tons of money.” Michael answered, “Gloria please don’t think about money. The Lord will provide. I know the Lord will provide. You have to believe that the Lord will bring us everything that we need. And it’s not so wild to think about having animals for healing, and it’s not so wild about creating a sanctuary for animals, and a beautiful paradise for children who are healthy and children who are unhealthy and, otherwise, might never have the privilege of being on this ranch. I really want to do this, Gloria.
The whole week that we were to spend at the ranch went too fast for me. I savoured every moment and cherished Michael’s thoughts. “Michael, why do you like animals so much?” Michael answered, “Because they are healing and they’re God’s creatures. They’re even in the Bible. I can recite for you Palm 148 that says, “Little wild animals and small creatures and flying birds praise the Lord” We must praise the Lord just like the animals do in the wild.”
“That’s wonderful Michael” I said,”There was always a Bible in my rooms when I traveled around the world,” Michael continued, “Sometimes I felt awfully lonely. Bill Bray felt compelled to lock me in my room for safety and not let me out of my room or let me go down the street by myself. I wanted to do this on so many occasions” “Oh well I think it’s great he tries to protect you so much.” I asked him, “Michael, why do you like children so much?” He said, “It’s rare that I get to be around children, Gloria. Whenever I see babies’ faces I see God shining in their eyes. I’m usually with adults or teenagers who come to my concerts. I come from a large family but I don’t know if I will be able to have children of my own. I just want to make it a paradise for myself and for children. I just want to share life’s pleasures with them."Michael grew pensive, then quietly began to share some of his career moments with me. “My most successful years have been the loneliest ones. I’m surrounded with thousands of colorful, wonderful people all around the world but there is no one special person for me. Sometimes I feel extremely lonely. The concerts are fantastic but after, I’m always alone.” That is what Michael told me. “Gloria, I feel like I’m dancing on a high wire in the circus big top without a net below. There’s no one there, no net, and I have to give my very best and stay on that high wire to make it more successful from one country to another.” I was astonished that he was baring his own heart. Compassionately, I threw my arms around Michael and hugged and hugged him until he gave a deep sigh.
Michael found a new glorious paradise at Neverland, where he was content to be, away from the crowds and the hustle and bustle of the cities, and the ranch was transformed through the force of Michael’s superb imagination. He created his own colorful-beautiful- rainbows over the 6 ½ acre man made lake. He acquired several tall water bird fountains and put coloured lights around the perimeters of the lake. One can enjoy all the colors of the rainbow through his creative innovations, yellow, blue, green, red, purple, pink with the water fountains shooting upward into the centre of the sparkling lake. Beautiful swans, too, could be seen swimming around the perimeter of the lake.
He had a special infirmary build at the ranch where the sick children could be treated. When Michael charted buses to bring in guests from Los Angeles, he often played music in buses or hired musicians to provide entertainment for the passengers. Michael Jackson embraced the whole world with the love he felt for all of his fans, when he invited them inside Neverland. When I think of Michael, I know he is looking down from heaven, where he is forever dancing and singing on God’s rainbows. There are many never before told true stories of hope and inspiration that I could share with you. His intentions were for Neverland to become a paradise for all the children of the world and his spirit will live there forever.”
— Gloria Rhonda Berlin.

The next Detroit: The catastrophic collapse of Atlantic City
With the closure of almost half of Atlantic City's casinos, Newark set to vote on gambling and casinos or racinos in almost every state, it seems as if the reasons for the very existence of Atlantic City are in serious jeopardy.
Israel Joffe
Atlantic City, once a major vacation spot during the roaring 20s and 1930s, as seen on HBOs Boardwalk Empire, collapsed when cheap air fare became the norm and people had no reason to head to the many beach town resorts on the East Coast. Within a few decades, the city, known for being an ‘oasis of sin’ during the prohibition era, fell into serious decline and dilapidation.
New Jersey officials felt the only way to bring Atlantic City back from the brink of disaster would be to legalize gambling. Atlantic City’s first casino, Resorts, first opened its doors in 1978. People stood shoulder to shoulder, packed into the hotel as gambling officially made its way to the East Coast. Folks in the East Coast didn't have to make a special trip all the way to Vegas in order to enjoy some craps, slots, roulette and more.
As time wore on, Atlantic City became the premier gambling spots in the country.
While detractors felt that the area still remained poor and dilapidated, officials were quick to point out that the casinos didn't bring the mass gentrification to Atlantic City as much as they hoped but the billions of dollars in revenue and thousands of jobs for the surrounding communities was well worth it.
Atlantic City developed a reputation as more of a short-stay ‘day-cation’ type of place, yet managed to stand firm against the 'adult playground' and 'entertainment capital of the world' Las Vegas.
Through-out the 1980s, Atlantic City would become an integral part of American pop culture as a place for east coast residents to gamble, watch boxing, wrestling, concerts and other sporting events.
However in the late 1980s, a landmark ruling considered Native-American reservations to be sovereign entities not bound by state law. It was the first potential threat to the iron grip Atlantic City and Vegas had on the gambling and entertainment industry.
Huge 'mega casinos' were built on reservations that rivaled Atlantic City and Vegas. In turn, Vegas built even more impressive casinos.
Atlantic City, in an attempt to make the city more appealing to the ‘big whale’ millionaire and billionaire gamblers, and in effort to move away from its ‘seedy’ reputation, built the luxurious Borgata casino in 2003. Harrah’s created a billion dollar extension and other casinos in the area went through serious renovations and re-branded themselves.
It seemed as if the bite that the Native American casinos took out of AC and Vegas’ profits was negligible and that the dominance of those two cities in the world of gambling would remain unchallenged.
Then Macau, formally a colony of Portugal, was handed back to the Chinese in 1999. The gambling industry there had been operated under a government-issued monopoly license by Stanley Ho's Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau. The monopoly was ended in 2002 and several casino owners from Las Vegas attempted to enter the market.
Under the one country, two systems policy, the territory remained virtually unchanged aside from mega casinos popping up everywhere. All the rich ‘whales’ from the far east had no reason anymore to go to the United States to spend their money.
Then came the biggest threat.
As revenue from dog and horse racing tracks around the United States dried up, government officials needed a way to bring back jobs and revitalize the surrounding communities. Slot machines in race tracks started in Iowa in 1994 but took off in 2004 when Pennsylvania introduced ‘Racinos’ in an effort to reduce property taxes for the state and to help depressed areas bounce back.
As of 2013, racinos were legal in ten states: Delaware, Louisiana, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia with more expected in 2015.
Tracks like Delaware Park and West Virginia's Mountaineer Park, once considered places where local degenerates bet on broken-down nags in claiming races, are now among the wealthiest tracks around, with the best races.
The famous Aqueduct race track in Queens, NY, once facing an uncertain future, now possesses the most profitable casino in the United States.
From June 2012 to June 2013, Aqueduct matched a quarter of Atlantic City's total gaming revenue from its dozen casinos: $729.2 million compared with A.C.'s $2.9 billion. It has taken an estimated 15 percent hit on New Jersey casino revenue and climbing.
And it isn't just Aqueduct that's taking business away from them.  Atlantic City's closest major city, Philadelphia, only 35-40 minutes away, and one of the largest cities in America, now has a casino that has contributed heavily to the decline in gamers visiting the area.
New Jersey is the third state in the U.S. to have authorized internet gambling.  However, these online casinos are owned and controlled by Atlantic City casinos in an effort to boost profits in the face of fierce competition.
California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Texas are hoping to join Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey and the U.S. Virgin Islands in offering online gambling to their residents.
With this in mind, it seems the very niche that Atlantic City once offered as a gambling and entertainment hub for east coast residents is heading toward the dustbin of history.
Time will tell if this city will end up like Detroit. However, the fact that they are losing their biggest industry to major competition, much like Detroit did, with depressed housing, casinos bankrupting/closing and businesses fleeing , it all makes Atlantic City’s fate seem eerily similar.

Macau: Past, Present and Future of Betting
Macau in the Peoples Republic of China is transforming into what might be compared to Las Vegas. Since a large number of the greatest Las Vegas gambling club organizations set foot in Macau, it has become a main retreat goal on the planet offering top Las Vegas style club lodgings  188xoso.com The historical backdrop of betting in Macau starts in the nineteenth century, when Macau was as yet a Portuguese settlement. Since 1847, when the Portuguese government sanctioned betting in the state, Macau was renowned as the Monte Carlo of the Orient. In those days, the most famous game in Macau was the Chinese game Fan Tan.
Tumblr media
The increase in the Macau wagering industry happened after the Portuguese government gotten the Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau with a gambling club imposing business model establishment in the mid 1960s. The STDM opened a few gambling clubs that offered a wide range of gaming including Western club games just as greyhound dashing and horse hustling.
In 1970, the Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau, worked by Stanley Ho opened Casino Lisboa. The 3 story complex reinforced Macau's notoriety for being the Monte Carlo of the Orient by offering 24 hours of wagering amusement including a wide assortment of Chinese and Western gambling club games, top exhibitions, 15 eateries, bars, pool, and luxurious facilities.
Up until the 2000s, Casino Lisboa had no opposition. It was the greatest gambling club inn in Macau and was the main spot in Asia where hot shots had the option to appreciate a rich way of life. The mid 2000 denoted the start of Western intrusion to Macau. Sands Macau was the main gambling club worked by an American organization to be opened in Macau.
Sands Macau was work by the Las Vegas Sands, the Las Vegas based organization that possesses and works the Venetian in Las Vegas. The 3 billion dollar lodging has changed the essence of Macau by offering Las Vegas style amusement to the Asian game capital. The 165,000 square foot betting territory offers in excess of 900 gambling machines and more than 430 table games including Baccarat, Fan Tan, Caribbean Stud Poker, Blackjack, Sic Bo and Roulette notwithstanding a selective VIP zone.
Following the accomplishment of Sands Macau, a few top American game organizations have started creating gambling club resorts in Macau. The Cotai Strip in Macau, a 100,000 square meter recovery situated between two islands, is as of now known as the Las Vegas Strip of the Far East. Here you can find out about the absolute most outstanding Macau club right now being developed.
Wynn Resorts, the big shot from Las Vegas will be opening the Wynn Macau in the harvest time of 2006. Wynn Macau vows to check the up and coming age of betting involvement with Macau. The main period of Wynn Macau will incorporate 100,000 square feet of playing territory including a 10,000 square feet VIP gambling club, while the subsequent stage will highlight an extra 136,000 square feet game zone, a theater, cafés and retails shops. The second period of the venture is relied upon to be finished by the second from last quarter of 2007.
MGM Grand, the first of Las Vegas gambling clubs to offer all family amusement, is as of now working together with Stanley Hos little girl, Pansy Ho Chiu King, on the improvement of MGM Grand Macau. The 28 story resort will incorporate a 222,000 square foot game zone with around 1,000 gaming machines and 300 table games. Likewise, the property will include a 1500 seat theater, club, meeting and show space, spa and nine cafés. MGM Grand Macau opening is wanted to 2007.

“The Notorious” Conor McGregor is known as one of the best mixed martial artists (MMA) in the world. Despite his reputation as a loose canon charged with multiple criminal offences, his talent in the ring and ability to draw a crowd are undeniable. Just last month, he ranked #12 in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings and #3 in the UFC lightweight rankings. According to Forbes, the Irishman made US$47 million in the past year through endorsements, side ventures, a base salary of US$3 million, and fight pay of US$30 million. His total net worth is estimated around US$110 million, establishing him as one of the highest-paid athletes in the world.

McGregor isn’t shy with the public about much of anything – and certainly not when it comes to his wealth. “I’m 30 now, say by about 35 I’ll be a billionaire,” he boasted in March. How does McGregor plan to get there? And what does the theatrical fighter plan to spend his fortune on?

Bad whiskey or bad boy whiskey?
Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today. I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!
— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) March 26, 2019
Earlier this year, six months after Khabib Nurmagomedov beat him in a title fight in Las Vegas in October 2018, McGregor claimed he was retiring from “Mixed Martial Art”. Fans were dubious about the announcement, however, as he had threatened to retire several times in the past. Some believe that the announcement was a publicity stunt to draw attention to “Proper Whiskey”, the alcohol brand he had just launched. In its first six months, Proper Whiskey sold almost 200,000 cases, amounting to 2.4 million bottles of liquor. McGregor seems to believe that this will help his fortune skyrocket, but according to a reporter at Business Insider who was sent a free bottle, the spirit “tasted like bad whiskey watered down with cheap vanilla extract”. Though it seems to be selling, the quality of the product has been widely criticised on the internet. One Irish bar in Florida went as far as to pour the whiskey down the toilet and publicly call McGregor’s violent behaviour “disgusting”. Only time will tell if this venture adds to McGregor’s fame or shame. A fashionable tough guy

In January 2018, McGregor raised eyebrows in the fashion community – beyond the Gucci fur coats or three-piece, custom-made suits he had sported before bouts. The fighter and his tailor decided to launch their own fashion brand under the name of “August McGregor”. The fashion label offers sportswear and modern suiting inspired by McGregor’s bold style. Suits available on the website range from about US$650 to US$1,200. “Fashion is something that I am truly passionate about, and I am excited to share exactly that with my fans by giving them a chance to share my iconic looks,” was how he announced the company’s launch. McGregor’s personal wardrobe includes, but is not limited to, US$2,000 Gucci shirts, a US$920 Louis Vuitton jumper, US$100,000 gold watches, US$1,000 crocodile loafers, and a Gucci mink coat that when paired with the matching ensemble, costs US$150,000. Starting a fashion label and looking the part requires a large investment upfront, and McGregor seems to believe you have to spend money to make money. Riding dirty

“The Notorious” doesn’t only invest his fortune in business ventures. He is known for showing off in a fight – why wouldn’t he show off in every other aspect of his personal life? McGregor is known to spend money on lavish material items beyond clothing. He owns a fleet of luxury cars: three limited edition Lamborghinis, a custom Rolls-Royce Ghost worth more than US$300,000, a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe valued at US$500,000, a BMW, multiple Range Rovers, and more. He also has a sweet ride for his son, Conor McGregor Jnr. While it’s estimated that his collection includes 15 to 20 cars, McGregor’s fleet of vehicles isn’t limited to the road. In 2017, McGregor bought his first yacht, dubbed “The 188” after the euros he once received in welfare cheques before his meteoric rise. McGregor added another US$3.4 million yacht to his collection in January. McGregor mansion

Remember this my Champion - People will always have an answer for the question they won’t have to answer themselves. Self education must never be our only form of education. But always know it is our best form. Let’s go my Champ champion!

As his empire expands, McGregor needs somewhere to put all his prized possessions. This summer, the UFC champ bought a US$2 million mansion in Kildare, Ireland. The riverside property, which features full horse-riding facilities, has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen and game rooms. McGregor has been known to buy customised arcade games for his son – each costs US$1,150. The home also has its own gym. McGregor, who had a humble Irish upbringing, is now one of the world’s wealthiest athletes and he isn’t shy about investing and spending money – reminding the world of who he is and where he came from.

Aretha Franklin’s Michigan Manse Tops Charts as This Week’s Most Popular Home
realtor.com
You’d better give the proper respect to the most popular home this week on realtor.com®. Owned by the late, great Aretha Franklin, the Michigan home caused curious fans to click, sending the residence to the top of our chart.
The Queen of Soul died in August at the age of 76, and left behind a relatively modest mansion in the suburbs of Detroit. The gated estate in Bloomfield Township was one of many properties the diva owned in Michigan, but it’s the first to appear on the market following her death.
This week’s runner-up is a concrete structure in Massachusetts built for maximum energy efficiency and covered in sod. Don’t feel like going underground? Other abodes making waves this week include an entertainer’s dream in New Orleans, a modern farmhouse built for horse lovers in Florida, and a $20 million luxury estate in the Arizona desert.
We think you’ll find your own personal oasis somewhere among this week’s most popular homes…

2. 166 Wheeler Rd, Princeton, MA
Price: $484,000 Why it’s here: At first glance, this concrete build looks like a bunker, but we assure you, it’s anything but. The earth-sheltered home brings energy efficiency to a new level.
Covered in sod, the home is naturally cool in the summer, and the massive earthen berms offer insulation during cold Massachusetts winters. “In all the years I’ve been doing this, this is the only earth-sheltered home I’ve seen,” says listing agent Greg Maiser. “It’s a very unique home. There’s pretty much nothing else like it out here.” A company called Terra Dome custom-built the place for the owner in 2005.
The interior features a huge open living space, and skylights offer natural light overhead. There’s an open kitchen, as well as three beds and 2.5 baths. Floors have radiant heat, and you save a bundle on heating, thanks to the home’s construction. And since the building is topped by grass, “You get to mow your house,” says Maiser.

1. 585 Kiftsgate Bend, Bloomfield Township, MI
Price: $800,000 Why it’s here: Music to a buyer’s ears—the potential to own a little piece of music history! The news that Aretha Franklin‘s home is on the market has the web humming, leading to its chart-topping standing.
The home hits a high note. The massive, Colonial-style mansion has five bedrooms, 6.5 baths, and more than 4,100 square feet. Finishes include marble everything, plus a two-story marble foyer and a two-story great room with a fireplace, wet bar, a wall of windows, and an upper-level bridge. The kitchen offers a huge island, marble floors, and granite counters.
The custom estate was built in 1990 and sits on a lot overlooking the gated community’s lap pool and two picturesque ponds. A buyer had better think long and hard about this interesting opportunity.

California’s Coolest Midcentury Motels
Tumblr media
Pictured: Humphreys Half Moon Inn by Darren Bradley. Article written by Jenna Chandler for LA Curbed.
In the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, wholesome American families embarking on road trip vacations actually wanted to stay in motels. They weren’t just affordable and convenient—they were in fashion. They were modern and homey and optimistic, even futuristic, in their design, with dramatic angles, colorful interiors, and oversized neon signs. Sometimes, there was even a touch of fantasy.
“For some travelers, the motel experience was the closest they might have to visiting the Hawaiian Islands… or a trip to the moon! Not everyone could afford a trip to Hawaii, but many could afford to stay at the Polynesian-themed Waikiki Motel,” says Heather David, the author of a forthcoming book entitled Motel California.
By the 1970s, the market, especially in California, was saturated. Chains proliferated, putting mom-and-pops out of business. And, the advent of the interstate highway system pulled traffic away from the roadside motor inns that hugged older, smaller routes, says David.
Today, she says, “there are few intact mid-century motel survivors and even fewer where you’d actually want to stay the night.”
If you’re driving across California, don’t resign yourself to a generic motel. David has shared with us her favorite examples of midcentury and Googie-style motels still worth visiting, from San Diego to Palm Springs to the Central Coast to Lake Tahoe. Many of them are time capsules that retain their cool signs. They’re all comfortable and full of character.
1. Thunderbird Lodge
Tumblr media
Photo via California Color Photos, San Francisco, Calif.
1350 Pine St • Redding, CA
Built as part of the Thunderbird Lodge motel chain, this is arguably the nicest remaining example. Guesses are that the neon thunderbird sign was inspired by the Thunderbird Hotel signage in Las Vegas.
2. Hotel Lautner
Tumblr media
67710 San Antonio St • Desert Hot Springs, CA
Designed by architect John Lautner (yes, that John Lautner), the Hotel Lautner began its days in 1947, as a relatively modest resort motel. Built with the intention that it was to be the start of a planned community in the desert, the motel initially functioned as a retreat for Hollywood stars. That planned community never happened, but the Hotel Lautner thankfully remains, respectfully restored to retain its original design integrity.
3. Saga Motor Hotel
Tumblr media
1633 E Colorado Blvd • Pasadena, CA
In November 1959, Pasadena celebrated the grand opening of the million-dollar Saga Pasadena Motor Hotel. Designed by local architect Harold Zook, the Saga Pasadena was built in a U-shape, with room wings surrounding a swimming pool. The grounds featured lush landscaping.
Today, the motel looks much as it did in 1959. The rooms have been redecorated and the palm trees are taller, but the property has been lovingly maintained. Be sure to check out the wonderful mosaic art of a knight and his horse near the motel office.
4. Capri Motel
Tumblr media

2015 Greenwich St • San Francisco, CA
Built in 1957, this is multi-story motel is located just on block from San Francisco’s “Motel Row,” i.e. Lombard Street. It’s nicely maintained, and it features multiple neon signs.
5. Stardust Lodge
Tumblr media
Photo via Tahoe Photo, Stateline, Nevada
4061 Lake Tahoe Blvd • South Lake Tahoe, CA
Following the opening of the Stardust Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas in 1958, numerous motels in the United States adopted the Stardust name and theme. The state of California once had over a dozen Stardust motel offerings. The Stardust Lodge in Lake Tahoe, however, is the arguably the best remaining example. Walking distance to Stateline, reasonably priced, and with the best midcentury motel sign left in the area, you won’t be gambling when you book your room.
6. The Islander Motel
Tumblr media
522 Ocean • Santa Cruz, CA
Tropical-themed motels were once as ubiquitous as midcentury tiki bars. Not so anymore. Palo Alto’s Tiki Inn is now the Stanford Terrace Inn. Costa Mesa’s Kon Tiki Motel is now the New Harbor Inn. Gone are Anaheim’s wonderful Kona Kai and Waikiki motels. This makes The Islander Motel in Santa Cruz all the more special. Not only is the 1963 motel building remarkably intact, but the owners opted to keep the original signage (a multi-colored striped tropical fish) and the original lobby furniture. Aloha!
7. Madonna Inn
Tumblr media
100 Madonna Rd • San Luis Obispo, CA
The iconic Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo opened on Christmas Eve 1958. The inn features more than 100 hundred uniquely themed guest rooms styled by Phyllis Madonna, a wonderful coffee shop, a restaurant, and one of the last animated neon highway signs in the state. Staying here is an unforgettable experience.
8. Safari Inn
Tumblr media
Photo via Safari Inn
1911 W Olive Ave • Burbank, CA
Visitors from all over the country come to the Safari Inn in Burbank to photograph its whimsical neon spear sign. The motel dates to 1958, and many of the original design elements remain. The swimming pool follows the shape of the motel signage, and safari-themed metal sculptures adorn the buildings.
9. Hope Springs Resort
Tumblr media
68075 Club Cir Dr • Desert Hot Springs, CA
To date, there have been three names for this desert resort: The Bella Sari Lodge, Cactus Springs Lodge, and now Hope Springs. But there has been one constant—luxury. Nestled into the hills of Desert Hot Springs, this spa getaway features 10 rooms and two pools. The motel dates to 1963. Note: This place is the real deal. There is a natural hot mineral spring well on-site.
10. Humphreys Half Moon Inn
Tumblr media
2303 Shelter Island Dr. • San Diego, CA
Built in 1960, the Half Moon Inn features a jaw-dropping A-frame porte-cochere at its entrance. Arguably the best replica of native Polynesian architecture on Shelter Island, the port-cochere is said to emulate a fishing canoe, its hanging lantern a lure for fish. Shortly after the motel’s opening in 1961, the property was celebrated in a special issue of Life Magazineentitled “The Call of California.”

Destination Divorce Parties are the Next Big Thing
In October 2015, Ariel Khawaja traveled to Cozumel, Mexico, to say “I do” before a group of 55 wedding guests.
Three years later she corralled her two best friends to stand beside her in Las Vegas as she said two other magic words: “I don’t.”
Anchoring the trip around a Drake concert, the 28-year-old, who works in real estate, filled her week with gambling, clubbing at the ritzy 1 OAK, partying poolside at Wet Republic—a day club at the MGM Grand—and otherwise recharging.
“Las Vegas is fun all the time, but when you’re there for your divorce, you’re really free,” says Khawaja, who lives in Houston. “When you’re there celebrating such a big change, you live in the moment and you’re not worried about what happened yesterday. I didn’t pay to have a pity party—I wanted to relax and enjoy time with my friends after the hell I had been through.”
If the Hangover film franchise cemented Las Vegas’s reputation as the ultimate bachelor-party town, Khawaja and other fun-loving travelers are helping establish it as the opposite: the perfect destination for a divorce party.
Often an exultant multiday escapade, these vacations celebrate—not mourn—the ending of a marriage. And in a city versed in over-the-top hospitality, venues are finding creative ways to help divorced men and women embrace their new relationship status.
Just Another Milestone Trip
Although the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) doesn’t actively track divorce-party figures, it also doesn’t shy away from the issue, and seasoned Vegas hospitality vets have seen the festivities firsthand.
Adam Clough first heard about the concept 10 years ago but says it’s taken off more recently. He once helped a guest fete his divorce in the company of his former groomsmen.
“People started telling us that they want a fresh start,” says Clough, the executive director of social sales and concierge operations for MGM Resorts, which has 12 properties along the Strip. “At first we thought, Well this is different. But people come to Vegas for celebrations, and people come for devastating events, so in a way it makes sense.”
Preferring the moniker “girls’ trip” or “friends’ trip,” Julie Banning, a travel adviser at the Virtuoso-affiliated Embark, has seen the trend rise in the past year or so.
“Lately we’ve seen a lot of people finding any excuse to travel,” says Banning, who’s planned several such friends’ trips, mostly for straight women. “It used to be that you go on your honeymoon. Now you go on a mini-moon before you go on your honeymoon. This is like one of those milestone trips—like, ‘OK, guess I’m going to take my divorce trip now.’”
Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties Grow Up
A few years ago, when Las Vegas native Bri Steck was deciding what to call her then-fledgling concierge company—which organizes dining, nightlife, and entertainment itineraries for tourists ready to get their party on—she purposely avoided the word “bachelorette.” To meet the rising demand for divorce parties, now about 10 percent of her business, she went with Vegas Girls Night Out (VGNO).
“I know bachelorettes get crazy, but it’s only to an extent because they’re getting ready to spend the rest of their life with somebody,” Steck says. “When you’re having a divorce party, you don’t have to worry about anybody else. There’s no guilt there. There’s nobody to answer to at home.”
Banning says a group of friends celebrating a divorce might be a bit older—and more financially solvent—than a gaggle of future bridesmaids. That means cocktails at an exclusive speak-easy instead of Jell-O shots, and shelling out for capacious accommodations instead of cramming 10 people into a single hotel room.
What Happens (Only) in Vegas
While there was a time when a trip to Sin City might’ve involved posting up at a smoky poker table for an entire afternoon, today visitors embrace a more diverse range of activities. According to the 2018 Las Vegas Visitor Profile Study, just released by the LVCVA, although 74 percent of visitors gambled while in town, two-thirds (67 percent) did so for two hours or less per day. That leaves plenty of time for endeavors like seeing a show, a choice favored by nearly 6 in 10 visitors.
Or, as someone once told MGM’s Clough: “I want to do good things during the day and bad things at night.”
Some venues have fully embraced their only-in-Vegas-ness by marketing specifically to the divorce-party crowd. For instance, the Just Divorced package ($499) at Machine Guns Vegas, a self-described “luxury gun range,” encourages divorcées to take a machine gun to their wedding dress and marriage certificate while wearing a black “Just Divorced” sash.
But often it’s just Las Vegas itself that’s enough, no official divorce-party label needed. Banning’s clients have embraced activities that their husbands might have pooh-poohed, including a Grand Canyon-from-above helicopter excursion (“Her husband was like, ‘That’s a waste of time, it’s too touristy’”), top-notch seats to Jennifer Lopez, and private meet-and-greets with Britney Spears.
Not surprisingly, mending shreds of a broken heart with barely any shred of clothing is a popular option as well.
VGNO’s divorce-party clients especially appreciate the VIP seating at Thunder From Down Under—say, around the very tables the oiled-up Aussies-in-thongs dance on. Steck’s husband co-owns the all-male revue.
At Chippendales, the Divorcé Play (from $149 a person), often booked not by the divorcée herself but by a close friend, pulls some of the all-male revue’s signature perks—limo transfer, VIP seating, and shoutouts from the stage—into a tidy package that hits the zeitgeist head-on.
Strip clubs are also a popular choice. “Your spirits will be insanely lifted by the time you leave,” jokes Lindsay Feldman, the director of brand marketing for Crazy Horse 3, an upscale gentlemen’s club that’s hosted high-profile celebrity divorce parties (on back-to-back nights, no less) for Colt Johnson and Larissa Dos Santos Lima, the formerly married stars of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé, as well as actress and media personality Courtney Stodden.
Custom details—a Colt-shaped piñata for Lima; a cleaved-in-half, three-tiered wedding cake depicting the bride kicking off the groom for Stodden—underscored an empowerment theme.
“Divorces are obviously very sensitive, but they’re also symbolic of freedom, and these parties are about the ‘power divorce.’” Feldman says. “They’re about making everybody really happy and excited. They’re about celebrating in a dynamic atmosphere with people who love you.”
The atmosphere drives home another unalienable truth: Las Vegas is one of the best places on Earth to be single.
“There aren’t a lot of other places in the world where it doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re going to get hit on, and somebody’s going to make you feel special,” says Banning, the travel adviser. “And that’s therapeutic, because you come back from the trip and you’re like, ‘I may be divorced, but I’ve got this.’”

Celebrity Drive: Jonathan Scott of HGTV’s “Property Brothers: Forever Home”
Quick Stats: Jonathan Scott, host, HGTV’s Property Brothers: Forever Home Daily Driver: 2018 Tesla Model X (Jonathan’s rating: 10 on a scale of 1 to 10) Other cars: See below Favorite road trip: Trans-Canada Highway Car he learned to drive in: 1975 Oldsmobile Omega First car bought: 1975 Oldsmobile Omega
Even as a kid, Jonathan Scott was conscious about the effect cars have on the environment. Now that he can buy any car he wants, he still opts for something that is eco-friendly.
“When we were kids, we had one truck that was really smoky and we would always say to dad, ‘Dad, that can’t be good for the environment!’ So eventually he sold it and he got another truck that wasn’t a big polluter.”
Jonathan got his 2018 Tesla Model X after trying his brother Drew’s Model S (read about that Tesla in his Celebrity Drive feature here).
“I find Drew’s car is a little hard to get in and out of. I’m not as limber as he is because he goes to the gym every day, so I like having the crossover—and it’s got more space for me to haul stuff, too,” Jonathan says.
He gives his Model X a perfect 10. “It’s hands down the best vehicle I’ve ever had. The interesting thing is I’ve never experienced power like that in a vehicle before. I’ll be on the highway at full speed, and you have to be careful—if you just touch the accelerator, it will whip your neck back,” he says.
He adds that since his house in Las Vegas runs off solar, it charges the car at no cost. “I never have to fill it up. It’s always topped off, so it’s really taken the hassle of having to stop and fill up completely out of my life.”
But it’s not just about doing right by the environment. For Jonathan, the Tesla’s design and interior space attracted him, too.
“I found for the longest time that a lot of the electric vehicles didn’t look very impressive or didn’t have the storage capacity that I would want,” he says, “so the Model X was the first one that I was like, ‘Wow it actually has a lot of storage room.’ We have a lot of equipment to haul around.”
Jonathan appreciates that his brother bought a Tesla first, so he could figure out whether he wanted one, as well. “I did let Drew be a guinea pig. Same way when we were kids, when we were going to get braces, or get bonding to fix the gap between our teeth, I thought, ‘I’ll let Drew go and test it first.’ It looked perfect, so then I did it after. I let him get it first and it turned out to be a great car, so when they came out with the model that had more room for me, it was perfect.”
After Jonathan recently worked with Jaguar, the automaker offered to give him a car. Initially, he said no: “I already have a vehicle and I like electric vehicles. Nobody ever told me that they had an electric vehicle,” he says.
When he was shooting the campaign, executives told him they just launched the I-Pace. “I was like, ‘What?’ They sent me an I-Pace so I’ve been zipping around in that,” he says.
Now that Scott has the I-Pace plus his Model X, he sees some clear differences between the two electric cars.
2019 Jaguar I-Pace
Rating: 7.5 for maneuverability, 10 for design
“They promote it as an SUV, but I don’t see it as an SUV at all. It’s a more compact vehicle than the Model X I have,” he says, giving it a 7.5 in maneuverability and a perfect 10 stylistically.
“It’s an absolutely beautiful vehicle. I love the big rims, I love the curves, it’s a very sexy vehicle,” Jonathan says. “When I have my Tesla and my I-Pace parked next to each other, everyone always comments immediately on the Jaguar first. Visually, it’s gorgeous.”
Technology-wise, Jonathan likes that he can control the Tesla essentially from his phone. “I can summon it, I can open doors, I can unlock it. The technology on the Tesla seems a little bit more modern—the big screen and the ability to control absolutely everything from it, though the I-Pace has the heated and cooled seats, whereas I don’t have the cooled seats with the Model X.”
Jonathan says the regenerative braking is a little more involved with the I-Pace. “I pretty much never even have to touch the brakes. … On the Tesla you have the ability to turn that off. So you have it either on or off, whereas on the I-Pace, you can control the intensity of what you want,” he says.
“And as the battery starts to get lower, the regenerative braking naturally increases, which is interesting.”
Inside the Jaguar, Jonathan really likes the materials. “It just seems like a cool vehicle and quite elegant, soft finishes throughout,” he says. “The power is fantastic. … I may test 0 to 60 every now and then, [and] it throws your head back. The front of the car actually raises up and it goes.”
He chose the Model X because his brother’s Model S is too low. “It’s hard to get in and out of,” he says. “Even though the I-Pace is a little bit higher, I still find it fairly compact. One thing I notice, when I have construction boots on, I can barely fit my foot where the pedals are, between the edge of the brake pedal and the wall on the right, so I keep clipping the brake when I’m trying to push on the accelerator. Everything is just a lot tighter.”
He says the Model X is a bigger vehicle, so the storage and spacing is better. “From a storage and function capacity, I prefer the Tesla Model X. From a style perspective and that initial punch, I prefer the Jaguar,” Jonathan says. “I think this is the perfect vehicle for me to have if I’m not in boots and I’m just zipping around or if my family comes to visit. My family doesn’t want a bigger vehicle like my truck; they want something smaller that they can get around easy in.”
Jonathan says the Jaguar also feels more like a conventional Jaguar than an all-electric car. “If someone was just getting in it and turning it on, I don’t think they would know right away that this is an electric vehicle, whereas with the Tesla you actually can’t even figure out how to turn it on and off unless you’ve taken a course and you know how to do that,” he says, with a laugh. “I do find that the I-Pace feels a lot more like what you’re used to in a sporty, elegant vehicle.”
He says the Jaguar is a fantastic vehicle but hopes consumers just know what to expect with the I-Pace. “It’s a fantastic vehicle if somebody realizes that it is a smaller vehicle than the Model X,” Scott says. “I think it’s beautiful, but it’s a little confusing when it’s promoted as a crossover. I don’t see any part of it being an SUV. To me it’s a sporty, sophisticated, sexy car. Wait ’til people see a new all-electric Lamborghini. I think I may have to get that.”
2016 Chrysler 300
Rating: 8
Before Jonathan got the Tesla, he had a couple 300 sedans. He keeps his 2016 300 for when friends and family visit and need a car to get around in. “I really like it. It almost felt to me like it’s a much more luxurious vehicle than what I paid for it. It’s got all the finishes that I really like.”
He also likes the “amazing sound system” and that it has a lot of space. “I have a lot of big friends, and that’s why I was with the 300 for the better part of a decade.
I always said it’s the poor man’s Bentley. It’s the ‘fake it ’til you make it’ Bentley,” he says, echoing another Celeb Drive, the late Adam West, who also had the same car.
Car he learned to drive in
Scott learned to drive in his very first car, a 1975 Oldsmobile Omega. “My dad had a rule when we were kids, that they wouldn’t just buy us a car; they would pay up to 50 percent of the value of the vehicle up to a max of $2,000.”
Jonathan and his brother worked out the math to think of what would be the most car they could get for that. “Drew and I at that time were living in difference cities because I moved to Alberta to help my dad build a ranch,” he says. “I didn’t want to invest in our $4,000 vehicle until we were back, so I just picked up a total beater and that’s what I learned in. I would go out in the field of the neighboring ranches, and I would drive it in circles and learn how to do everything, and park it.”
The Oldsmobile is also the car Scott got his license in. Although he jokes his original horsepower was a quarter horse, since they had horses on their property, the Oldsmobile was a fun ride to have. “Our friends, everyone had their own beat-up vehicle and we’d tow around in the fields. Probably the safest way for teenagers to get out and be reckless is to do it in an open field where you’re not going to cause any trouble,” he says.

The fields were also a good place to practice parallel parking. “We’d take a couple of logs and set out the logs and then I would parallel park between them,” he recalls.
Jonathan got into an accident with the Oldsmobile after having it for less than a year. “The vehicle was totaled, but I walked away totally unscathed, and that was a testament to it,” he says. “It’s a pretty bulky car. I was fortunate enough that I didn’t get injured. Good thing I wasn’t in a tiny little Datsun or something.”
Following the accident, he got a Chrysler E-Class. Once he and his brother were ready to get their $4,000 vehicle, they chose a used 1988 Ford Thunderbird.
“It had leather seats, powered seats, it was just a really sexy-looking car,” Scott says. “We had never had anything like that, so that was what we pooled our money on. We drove that until we drove it into the ground. We had that forever. The first thing that sold me on it was that it had leather seats and it was all powered because my dad never believed in having powered seats or powered windows because he thought it was just one more thing to break down.”
Jonathan doesn’t have regrets and nostalgia about past cars such as that Thunderbird. “I’m not a very materialistic person that way, so I don’t hold sentimental value in things like a vehicle. For me it’s more about ‘Does it do what I want it to do?’” he says. “Drew and I could go out very easily and buy ourselves a $400,000 car. But we’ve never been that type of people. I want something that’s safe, something that looks good, and something that functions. For me, I put a lot more value in experiences, getting out and spending time with friends.”
One thing his friends want to experience, though, is test-driving his Tesla. “They want to go for a ride in it, and they love the falcon doors,” he says. “It’s always fun to just go and joy-ride with friends and have them test it.”
Favorite road trip
“I love going up into the mountains. We lived on the edge of the forest growing up, just outside of Vancouver, before we built the ranch in Alberta,” Jonathan says. “It’s the most magnificent drive up in the mountains. The whole city was basically carved out of the forest. Thick, big trees, they’re hundreds of years old. Just an amazing drive.”
Jonathan and his family would do that drive through the mountains on the Trans-Canada Highway. “You pass through the Rockies and you see mountain sheep, bears, and elk,” he says.
Those are the road trips he remembers fondly. “You go from where we were, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, and we would take it all the way across through the Rocky Mountains, through Banff, into Calgary. That’s magnificent.”
