Matthew Barney’s Self-Lubricating Frames
A small, lingering question I’ve had for 20 years: what is a “self-lubricating frame”? At the Guggenheim "Cremaster" exhibit and later exhibits, I wondered about this phrase on the label cards of Barney’s film stills, with custom frames, they are described as “chromogenic print in self-lubricating frame.” Perhaps easily answered, but because I wasn’t holding a phone connected to the internet in the museum back then, never answered.
Tumblr media
Recently I went to a screening of Matthew Barney’s “Cremaster 3” (2002), with a Q&A between Barney and Martine Syms. Nostalgia lured me to Santa Monica, as I haven’t seen the complete 3-hour film since seeing the entire cycle at San Francisco's Castro Theater in 2003.
While the earlier films retained a video look, "Cremaster 3" (the final film) must have been shot on one of the better HD DV formats of the era at 24P, because it looks very filmic, the degraded 35mm print we watched certainly contributed to that vibe.
Tumblr media
If you are new to Barney’s work, his long-term projects like "Cremaster" have sculptural and architectural aspects. Some sculptures could be construed as props and parts of a set for performance. In a gallery setting they are firmly sculpture. A film of the performance becomes its own highly edited and crafted artifact, which is then used in the spaces that exhibit the objects.
How do framed photographs fit into this system? As with the films, they are artifacts of the performance, a Barney exhibit might have the sculpture (often quite large) in the center of a gallery space, with the framed photographs on the walls, in the same way a video monitor might be on a wall with the dangling headphones.
Barney cites "Cremaster" as beginning in 1994, but this framed football magazine is from 1991, with what became the Cremaster logo applied in the center. This example suggests these framed photographs exist as collectables with some connection to how a sports or music fan collects still images of action, or a cinema fan would collect a production still.
Tumblr media
Along with vaseline or beeswax, self-lubricating plastic as used in sculpture or framed photographs can be considered one of Barney's core materials. Was it selected due to the fact it resembles beeswax? Here's another 1991 example, with a black and white silver print.
Tumblr media
The "Cremaster"-era prints themselves are exquisitely lit and printed, mostly color, many seem to be photographed by Michael James O’Brien, though I don't recall ever seeing his name on a museum or gallery label. The photographer is like the fabricator of the frame, a craftsperson Barney hires to execute the object. My recollection is they are printed luxuriously matte, which works well with the creamy frames. The "Cremaster 3" prints are of larger dimensions that became popular at the fin de siècle with Gursky, or more relevant to Barney as his own lead actor, the portraits of Rineke Dijkstra. These are titled film stills, the convention of the Cremaster stills seems to be “movie : subject.” (e.g. Cremaster I: Orchidella).
Tumblr media
My memory of the framed Cremaster photographs is that they were of somewhat uniform size and look: a creamy beeswax plastic, in line with the other sculpture you might see in his exhibits, no sharp edges, but not particularly different from other plastics you might encounter in our modern wonderland of PFAS.  When I first read "self-lubricating frame," I assumed it was partially a joke, a reference to petroleum jelly/ vaseline, one of Barney’s other preferred materials. Or perhaps lubricated condoms.
Looking online at the auction houses, it appears my memory was way off, there were many variations in size, shape and even color. Ireland is a core part of the "Cremaster" mythology, and this "Cremaster 4" print is in delightful Shamrock Shake green.
Tumblr media
After that screening of "Cremaster 3," I went on the typical bender of reading old blog posts and writings on the topic. There’s a 2004 doc streaming on Kanopy (the library video app, excellent for art documentaries), where the NYT art critic Michael Kimmelman walks through the Guggenheim Cremaster exhibit with Barney answering questions, explaining references, personal and mythical, cutting to scenes from the relevant films. About nine minutes into the doc, my question is answered. Barney explains about a sculpture they are looking at: “[it's] high density polyethylene, from the same family as Teflon is from, has a resistance to friction. And in that way it’s a self-lubricating plastic, in that it generates its own lubrication.”
OK! So "self-lubricating" is a description for a class of industrial plastic products, which Barney has fabricated his frames of and adopted the phrase. "Self-lubricating plastic frame" is more accurate if more mundane sounding. There's no liquid aspect to it, but if we were able to rub at it, in a repetitive fashion, could we perhaps notice it was different? It's a specific material - not a condom joke, or even like using the word "giclée" to gussy up "ink jet" print.
This material is described as:
solid lubricants are embedded as microscopic particles in millions of tiny chambers in the fiber-reinforced material. From these chambers, the plastic bushings release tiny amounts of solid lubricant during movement.
Another description of how it works once molded into an industrial form:
The bearing achieves this by transferring microscopic amounts of material to the mating surface, creating a film that lubricates and reduces friction over the entire length of the rail or shaft.
Tumblr media
When you read this and see some of the examples of how it's used in actual products (Linear Bearing for 8mm rod pictured above), this wasn't selected by Barney just because it resembles beeswax, but because conceptually it's a classic Barney material. A plastic, honeycombed with microscopic bits of lubricant! There's an added tension looking at these objects, knowing the material is designed for friction, but will likely never experience it. After the organic forms are molded, the films are shot, the stills are taken, the photographs mounted in the frame, they will only ever be handled by people wearing white gloves.

JAW Fashion Trivia vol. I - Saint Laurent
Jeremy's starring in the video which is a part of promo/campaign for the new book in the SL Editions series "ZOË, PHOTOGRAPHED BY PURIENNE". As noted in the oficial summary, the book includes photographs of Jeremy too.
Tumblr media
The book is expensive, as "coffee table books" usually are, because they're meant to be a valuable, collectible piece for the fans of the brand, the photographer, or the celebrity (they are thick, heavy, and printed on beautiful paper). On the other hand, it's an affordable piece, let's say like a perfume, when you can't really buy a Saint Laurent leather jacket or boots, you go for a "souvenir." As we know, all designer merch has been incredibly popular in the past years, and books are part of this phenomenon too.
Saint Laurent or YSL or what? Know that Yves Saint Laurent has lost the "Yves" with the arrival of the new creative director - Hedi Slimane - who is famous for altering something small but essential about the brand he's currently working for. And he said - Saint Laurent it is. Previously, he had crossed out the "é" from CÉLINE, and it has remained CELINE even after his departure. YSL is used for Yves Saint Laurent luxury cosmetics at the moment - YSL Beauty, and it's owned by L'Oreal. Cosmetics, as well as some other, cheaper accessories, are usually licensed by the big brands to make even more profit. A good example is sunglasses and optical glasses (CELINE, Prada, Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabbana, etc.) licenses are held by Italian Essilor.
Can we expect more Jeremy in Saint Laurent? We know that Jeremy owns THAT Saint Laurent leather jacket and who knows what else. He wore custom suits to a couple of award shows. His appearance in the campaign means that he doesn't have an exclusive contract with Calvin Klein, which usually happens with big brands, or that it lasted only for a certain period. So we might see Jeremy in another campaign! Due to his height, the clothes will have to be altered to fit him. It's also tough to shoot a campaign with other models because you can see how short he is (not sure how well they faked it in the GQ cover story...) compared to them. French brands, in general, don't like using celebrities who don't have model sample sizes for campaigns. But the more famous the celebrity is, the more they're willing to budge, I suppose!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(note: I have absolutely no problem with Jeremy's height, these are just simple facts from the industry)

Abstract Chemigram - Infection of Purple
Tumblr media
The title of this artwork "The Infection of Purple," introduces a layer of ambiguity and complexity. The term "infection" can carry both positive and negative connotations.
On one hand, it might symbolise the spreading influence of something vibrant, powerful, and transformative – a celebration of the regal qualities associated with purple. On the other hand, it could suggest a malaise or illness permeating ideas, art or society.
The predominant use of purple with its regal association introduces a sense of richness and sophistication. Purple is traditionally linked to qualities of royalty, luxury, and mystery.
The image is an original chemigram, augmented with purple candle wax, heated and dripped onto the print.
The irregular patterns and textures created by the dripping wax (and the use of photographic chemicals to make the chemigram) contribute to its overall abstraction.
The psychological and abstract nature of the image encourages viewers to delve into their own interpretations. The interplay between the regal purple, the tactile qualities of wax, and the ambiguous concept of infection sparks contemplation. Some may sense a celebration of opulence; others might discern a critique of visual excess.
The image is intended as a visual enigma and its interpretation is secondary. The driving purpose is the creation of a meditative object that reveals something of the process of interpretation from a personal and subjective perspective.
from the project The Collective Unconscious - a body of abstract photographic work exploring ways to photograph dreams.

Malo Spring Summer 2014 Women’s Collection

Malo, Campi Bisenzio 2013, 92 pagine,44 modelli, 17 x 22,9 cm
euro 35,00

Unique craftsmanship and contemporary sophistication meet in Malo's new women's collection, enhanced by the fine crafting and precious details that give new meaning to the timeless charm of cashmere and fine cotton yarns. In a chromatic rhythm touched by natural nuances and light hues, coral, pink and sage lend a fresh feel next to vibrant fleur-de-lis and ice and the intensity of royal blue, bright red and papaya, along with fluorescent yellow-lime.  The luxurious, ultra modern look especially infuses the "Twist" capsule collection, a line of extremely sophisticated clothing and accessories with intricate threading and cut-outs in which cotton, nappa leather and cashmere are trimmed with long, wavy fringes on dresses, boleros, miniskirts, generous day-to-night tote bags and belts inspired by the Navajo.  This refined, harmonious balance is emphasized by the unique crafting of the season's other capsule collection, "Saint Tropez", which not only reinterprets the legendary Malo bag, but plays on its iconic weave for a complete look that encompasses polos, tanks, T-shaped cardigans and jackets with three-quarter length sleeves. Cashmere, cotton and cashmere/silk create measured, form-fitting lines, contrasting with softer, deconstructed, asymmetrical volumes worn loosely and opening to reveal the layering of different shapes and unexpected mixes of materials, with a delicately romantic look in the floral prints and transparent silk or cotton daywear pieces. Combined with the floral patterns - featured alone or in the Jacquard sweaters - satin-finish metal studs, captivating color-blocking and see-through effects stand out, with raised stripes or crocheted textures to recreate the effect of couture lace on the longer, more sinuous silhouettes.

Berghain's Notorious Bouncer Makes His Modeling Debut in Berlin Clubwear Sven Marquardt, the legendary bouncer of Berlin nightclub Berghain notorious for admitting or denying people entry at his whim, is now a fashion model thanks to 44 Label Group, who featured him in the lookbook for its Fall 2023 collection. The brand was founded by techno producer Max Kobosil who started out DJ'ing at Berghain when he was just 22 before launching 44 Label Group as a brand that marries rave gear with luxury ready-to-wear. Enlisting Marquardt, then, was a no-brainer.In the lookbook, the nightlife icon-turned-photographer wears an all-black outfit with a "Rave New World" hoodie and slicked back hair showcasing his signature face tattoos. It's not her first foray into fashion — Marquardt was among the guests who scored an invite to Bottega Veneta's secret Berlin show during the pandemic.Titled "Blame Society," the Fall 2023 collection features bold prints, coarse fabrics and utilitarian uniforms built with 44 Label Group's clubwear-meets-functionality ethos. As a brand that emerged from Berlin's underground music scene, this season is fittingly about a "wardrobe of club kids from a doomed future."Slogans include "Vinyl Only," "Guest List" and "Backstage" and there's also a collab with DJ luggage brand UDG consisting of a strapped headphone case and waist bag. Other standouts include pleated combat skirts and full-body boiler suits. 5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wedding Photographer in Colchester
On your wedding day the moments captured will be there to live for a lifetime. It is important for one to select the best wedding photographer Colchester so as to capture awesome even in still images.
However, where should you begin with an overwhelming number of choices to consider? When tying the knot in Colchester, use these handy tips to identify the perfect camera whiz for your style, vision, and budget.
1. Review Their Portfolio
Tumblr media
Shortlist a few potential Colchester-area pros then critically analyze pics on their website or blog. Judge technical qualities like:
Lighting — Proper illumination, flattering angles
Focus — Sharpness on people, details
Framing/Cropping — Subject centering, rule of thirds
Posing — Natural stances, flattering guidance
Moment Capturing — Spontaneity, joy, freezing
Also, examine their unique aesthetic style. Do bright, desaturated, or high-contrast images appeal most? This visual taste will blanket your entire collection.
Scoping options early lets you pick a creative match, aligning photos with your vision.
2. Compare Photography Styles
Wedding photographers in Colchester have signature styles driving the feel of final images. Consider what matters most for your album:
Photojournalistic — Candid in-the-moment memories
Traditional Posed — More structured group shots
Fine Art — Dramatic, artistically altered images
Lifestyle — Relaxed vibe with some guidance
Vintage — Black and white, desaturated filters
Contemporary — Bold, vivid color pops
If having a photo grabbing your first kiss matters more than an artistic silhouette shot, choose documentary over fine art styling. Or mix photographers for a fusion approach.
3. Gauge Their Personality
This pro will shadow your every wedding move from the dressing room to the reception floor for 8+ hours. So picking someone who puts you at ease behind the lens is key.
Vet potential photogs in Colchester by:
Checking reviews for professional yet friendly service
Having a quick phone or video consultation
Opting for engagement shoots to trial run
The right personality blends into a hectic wedding day and helps capture authentic moments. Mismatched energies show in uncomfortable images.
4. Understand Services & Products
Beyond snapping photos, Wedding Videographer Colchester develops final albums differently. Ask potential hires:
How many finished images are included?
What print packages or digital files do you provide?
Will you edit/retouch images? How is this styled?
Can we order special prints like canvas or albums?
How long is the turnaround time for edited photos?
Hidden fees, strict digital rights or slow production can disrupt your experience. Align expectations early.
5. Evaluate Budget Needs
Quality Event Photographer Colchester aligns with pricing, so have realistic budgeting expectations. Packages in Colchester range from:
Entry Level — €800~€1500
Mid Range — €1500~€3000
High End — €3000+
Factor if albums, special effects, multiple shooters or travel costs extra too.
If sticking to €2000 total, prioritize must-have moments versus full luxury spreading across fewer hours. Streamlining the shoot captures the essence affordably.
Ready to Find Your Match?
Securing gorgeous, timeless Colchester wedding images starts with choosing the right photographer. Use these insider tips when vetting your options.
With an ideal pro tailored to your wedding scope, personality, and niche aesthetic, you’ll land beautiful photos showcasing a momentous chapter of life for many anniversaries to come.

Lemaire SS25
From Amy Verner's review for Vogue:
They noted how the photographs of August Sander informed their opening black-and-white archetypes—the men’s white button-front V-neck under a black ensemble and overcoat, for example. But the designers also have a thoroughly contemporary eye, as if considering that one of those portraits today might feature a young woman in a liquid-like dress adorned with beaded body jewelry, or a guy projecting an urban-western vibe, his black shirt pierced with small rings.
The lineup’s softly tailored ensembles, often in nuanced tones of moss and bark, will particularly resonate for Parisians and people elsewhere who have endured a season of un-springlike weather. Here, you start the day shielded by a leather jacket and different weights of gabardine and poplin and finish by peeling open a shirt to expose the shoulder. The duo also continues to design coats with inner straps that transform outerwear into a kind of shoulder accessory. In two instances, they created volume around a knit minidress integrated with another kind of strap: garters that held up matching thigh-highs. Lemaire has an innate sensuality, but this felt cheeky: Pretty Woman in the era of quiet luxury.
The show’s shift towards dusty colors—coordinating pieces in a captivating blue gray, a romantic ruched dress in peony—coincided with a print series featuring the pencil crayon drawings of chairs and other objects by Philippe Weisbecker. Along with bags that boasted braided details and removable jewelry elements and asymmetric sandals dubbed ‘Picasso,’ the art and craft layers brought even more interest to the collection.

Haldi ceremony holds a special place in our hearts. It's an event filled with joy, laughter, and a splash of yellow. This vibrant pre-wedding ritual is steeped in cultural significance and cherished traditions. At Riwaat, we believe that such an auspicious ceremony deserves an outfit that matches its spirit. Enter the Haldi kurta pajama—a timeless and versatile ensemble that perfectly blends tradition with style.
The Significance of Haldi Ceremony
The Haldi ceremony is more than just applying turmeric paste on the bride and groom; it's a moment of celebration that brings families together. The bright yellow hue of Haldi (turmeric) symbolizes purity, prosperity, and good luck, setting the tone for a happy and harmonious wedding day. For this occasion, the choice of attire is essential, and nothing speaks of comfort, elegance, and tradition better than a kurta pajama.
Why Choose a Kurta Pajama for Haldi?
When it comes to Haldi outfits, comfort is key. The Haldi paste can be a bit messy, and the event is often accompanied by playful water splashes, flower petals, and lots of dancing. The kurta pajama is an ideal choice, offering both style and practicality. Its loose-fitting design allows for easy movement, while the fabric options, from soft cotton to breathable linen, ensure comfort throughout the ceremony.
Styles to Consider for Your Haldi Kurta Pajama
Classic White with a Yellow Dupatta: A white kurta pajama paired with a vibrant yellow dupatta is a timeless choice for Haldi. The white represents purity, while the yellow complements the theme of the ceremony. At Riwaat, we offer a range of white kurta pajamas crafted from high-quality cotton, ensuring you stay cool and comfortable while looking effortlessly stylish.
Bold Yellow Kurta Pajama: For those who love to make a statement, a bold yellow kurta pajama is perfect for the Haldi ceremony. This monochromatic look captures the essence of the event and is sure to stand out in photographs. Our collection at Riwaat features various shades of yellow, from mustard to sunflower, allowing you to find the perfect hue to suit your style.
Printed and Embroidered Designs: If you want to add a contemporary twist to your traditional attire, opt for a printed or embroidered kurta pajama. Intricate floral prints or subtle embroidery can elevate your outfit, adding a touch of sophistication. Riwaat offers a curated selection of kurta pajamas with unique prints and hand-embroidered details that blend modern aesthetics with traditional charm.
Fabric Choices That Speak of Comfort and Elegance
The choice of fabric plays a crucial role in the overall look and feel of your kurta pajama. For a summer wedding, lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal, offering breathability and comfort. If you're looking for something more luxurious, consider silk or a silk-blend kurta pajama. These fabrics add a subtle sheen and richness to your attire, making you feel like royalty on your special day.
Accessorize to Enhance Your Look
No outfit is complete without the right accessories. For a Haldi kurta pajama, less is more. Opt for a simple pair of traditional mojris or jutis, and consider adding a pocket square or a contrasting dupatta to add depth to your outfit. A minimalistic bracelet or a watch can further enhance your look without overshadowing the simplicity and elegance of your attire.
Why Riwaat for Your Haldi Outfit?

Display Your Cherished Memories with Jay Strongwater's Exquisite Picture Frames
In the age of digital photography, where countless memories are stored in the cloud, the art of displaying physical photographs remains a cherished tradition. There's something inherently special about holding a tangible memory in your hands, encased in a beautiful frame that not only preserves the moment but also adds to the aesthetic appeal of your home. Jay Strongwater, renowned for his luxurious and meticulously crafted designs, offers a collection of picture frames that do just that. These frames are more than just holders of photographs; they are pieces of art that elevate any space.
The Art of Picture Framing
Picture frames serve a dual purpose: they protect and showcase your most precious memories while enhancing the decor of your home. A well-chosen frame can transform a simple photograph into a centerpiece, drawing attention and admiration from anyone who sees it. Jay Strongwater’s frames are designer picture frames with this in mind, offering a blend of elegance, sophistication, and artistic flair.
Crafted with the utmost attention to detail, each frame from Jay Strongwater is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality and design. The intricate detailing, the use of premium materials, and the luxurious finishes all contribute to making these frames a must-have for anyone looking to add a touch of elegance to their home.
Why Choose Jay Strongwater?
Exquisite Craftsmanship: Jay Strongwater frames are not mass-produced; they are carefully crafted by skilled artisans who pour their expertise and passion into every piece. This ensures that each frame is unique, with no two pieces being exactly alike.
Premium Materials: Only the finest materials are used in the creation of Jay Strongwater frames. From hand-painted enamel to Swarovski crystals, these frames are made to last and to maintain their beauty for years to come.
Timeless Design: The designs of Jay Strongwater frames are inspired by both classical and contemporary styles, making them timeless pieces that can complement any decor. Whether your home is modern, traditional, or somewhere in between, there is a Jay Strongwater frame that will perfectly suit your style.
Tumblr media
Versatility: These frames are not just for photographs. They can also be used to display art prints, certificates, or any other document that holds sentimental value. The versatility of Jay Strongwater frames makes them a worthwhile investment for any home.
Enhancing Your Home’s Aesthetic Appeal
In addition to their functional purpose, Jay Strongwater frames serve as decorative accents that can enhance the overall aesthetic of your home. Placed on a mantel, a side table, or a bookshelf, these frames add a touch of luxury and sophistication to any room. Their intricate designs and online luxurious figurines for sale catch the eye, making them conversation pieces that stand out in any setting.
Moreover, Jay Strongwater frames come in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors, allowing you to find the perfect match for your home’s decor. Whether you prefer a classic gold frame with ornate detailing or a sleek, modern design with a pop of color, Jay Strongwater has something to offer.
How to Choose the Perfect Frame
When selecting a Jay Strongwater frame, consider the following factors:
The Photograph: The frame should complement the photograph it holds. A black-and-white photo might look stunning in a silver or black frame, while a colorful image might pair well with a frame that has a bold, vibrant design.
The Room’s Decor: Choose a frame that matches the style and color scheme of the room where it will be displayed. A frame that contrasts too much with the room’s decor might look out of place.
The Frame’s Size: Ensure that the frame is the right size for the photograph or document it will hold. A frame that is too large or too small can detract from the overall look.
Conclusion: Elevate Your Memories with Jay Strongwater
In a world where digital images are fleeting and often forgotten, Jay Strongwater’s picture frames provide a way to cherish and display your most precious memories in a tangible, beautiful way. These frames are more than just functional items; they are works of art that can elevate the aesthetic appeal of any home.

Peter's shoulders hunch forward as his hands close about either side of a freezing cold bottle of root beer. His lips tug outward in a half-smile. Beth might not have a single clue how much a gallon of milk costs at the local grocery, but she listens when someone tells her what their favorite brand is, and for him, it's IBC. Perfect on its own, but somehow even better than perfect with ice cream.
Surrounded by the blanket fort and the lights strung inside it, he looks to her face and notices her gaze is cast down and away from him. He knows their friendship has been under strain lately… chances are she recognizes it as well. That she'd had the idea seemed a stroke of genius to him, right when he needed a little time to just get away from the house for a while. May's been fretting over him a little too zealously.
Not that it's difficult to see why. Not with the bruises and soreness. Clear evidence of fighting, even though no teacher or appalled parent had yet indicated there'd been any schoolyard brawls.
A crease appears between his eyebrows. If there's anybody who could understand? Maybe it's his best friend.
"Hey… Beth?"
His hands clutch a little more tightly around the bottle. He could shatter it without much effort. But that would be poor manners, and make an awful mess. Why did this have to be so hard?
He swallows what feels like an adult bullfrog of a lump in his throat.
"What would you do if you wanted to tell someone the most important thing in the world, but you knew that them knowing it would put them in danger?"
Blanket Fort Asks || ~
Tumblr media
Superman has his Fortress of Solitude. Dr Fate has the window and door-less Tower of Fate. Beth? She has a blanket fort in the unused 'attic' of the sixth floor of her building. The pavilion style tent is made up of luxurious and brightly coloured sheets and cushions and little faery-lights strung across the supporting framework ~trellises unused in the rooftop garden, crates of possessions that have been sequestered away for so long she doubts anyone would remember what was in them, large pieces of heavy wooden furniture that loomed imperiously after escaping a Bronte novel~ was not exactly secret nor was it magickal in any way, but it was Beth's. Moreso even than her own bedroom. The Admiral's voice doesn't echo in its confines. Even Andy knocks on some solid bit to announce himself then waits for her permission. She keeps her few treasures here. A small collection of Sartre, Kerouac, Nin. Lancet and New England Journals of Medicine that she used as the blue-print to her future college studies. A drawer with photographs of Men of Science she deemed most important in the world, one of who is very familiar to Peter, and why she doesn't display them openly when she has company. Ballet shoes she hasn't worn in over a decade, dried leis, a table made from an old short board. A myriad of secret loves she would call a reflection of her inner world. She'd stocked up on root beer for Peter, who was just as much a part of her blanket fort as anything else inside of it. So why is it hard as he sits in the insubstantial structure to engage him in conversation? It never used to be. When she first moved to New York, Peter had been her first ~really her only~ friend. Through thick, thin, and all that could be thrown at them. Even Andy loved Peter and any threats made happened to be gentle and out of concern the likes of which only a big brother could have. Language had never been difficult between them. An intuitive understanding of science and maths shared was it's own form of affection. When he says her name, she looks up. Yes, the smile on her face is a little vague but she does her best to be normal, to be the Beth he's used to and not the one who sought the quietude of the blanket fort to begin with. Peter doesn't look any happier than she feels and she hates that. Not him, not by any means. She just can't bear for Peter to be unhappy in any way, despite the circumstances he finds himself in. There are fading bruises at the corner of his eye, the one that's a glancing blow to his jaw. Maybe he's going to finally tell her why that's been happening, tell her who has been dealing out the punches like torture-confetti.
She bumps his shoulder gently with her own, up ticks her jaw as a soundless signal that she's watching, she's listening. "Yeah?" The clench of his hands turns his knuckles white, a strain that also doesn't sit well. The subject must be heavy as he doesn't preface it with a silly joke or teasing riddle. If anything, his tone is riddled with the same apprehension she can't see in his eyes because he's not exactly looking at her. The question stuns her and it takes a few seconds to both process it, and then to try and structure a helpful answer. Some rabbit-nervous part of her brain shrinks back and way from the whole situation, certain as it is that maybe Peter's figured out the three secrets she keeps from him; the least of which is that she's been in love with him since Freshman year, that she's some kind of mutant or something, that Andy is too. None of which she can wrestle to her lips. "Well, I guess firs' kind I'd do is figure out if they'd be in danger even if they didn't know. If it doesn't matter one way or the other, I'd tell 'em. If they'd be safer not knowing, then mebbe I'd keep the secret but I'd find someone else who could know it....just so it didn't eat me from inside out. I hear....I hear that's what best friends are for, you know?"
