LUSTMORD "Much Unseen Is Also Here"
35 years later, ‘Much Unseen Is Also Here’ continues the legacy established by ‘Heresy’ and echoes its enthralling narrative arc. Sequenced in three distinct parts; ‘Much Unseen Is Also Here’ is meant to be listened to in a single, uninterrupted sitting; transporting listeners away to an uncompromising parallel world that only exists within the music, before casting them back out at the end, forever changed.
Opening piece, ‘Behold A Voice As Thunder’, is an ominous droning fog that conceals something unspeakable. Glacial strings, a zither-like dirge and manipulated found sounds are cut short by a gargantuan pounding presence, whether looming footsteps or a colossal heartbeat; the choice is left entirely to the listener’s imagination. Elsewhere, ‘Their Souls Asunder’ appears centred on a chorus of voices; a vital glimpse of humanity. However, as the piece continues, these voices wane, wither and warp until we’re left with something akin to the cries of a wounded animal, which begs the question: ‘were the voices we followed blindly into the darkness ever human at all?’
This sense of uncertainty and the terrifying unknown is an important and recurring theme within Lustmord’s work; “I chose to let the sound talk for me” says Brian. “My music is not meant to be explained - only listened to as a means of exposing the sheer insignificance of our primitive thoughts and actions within the vast scale of the cosmos - a scale which we as a species are ill equipped to comprehend.”

Top albums of 2024. I have a lot of them.
Attic Ocean - Retriever [Glow, Lilies and Sea]
beabadoobee - This Is How Tomorrow Moves [Take a Bite, Beaches]
Bored at My Grandmas House - Show & Tell [I Like What You Bring Out in Me, Friendship Bracelets]
Blushing - Sugarcoat [Tamagotchi, Seafoam]
copperplate - dream within a dream [bortle scale, tunnel vision]*
copperplate - a pleasant journey [in kyoto, sightsee]
Hazel English - Real Life [Jesse, All Dressed Up]
Mo Dotti - opaque [for anyone and you, really wish]
NewDad - Madra [Madra, Angel]
Nightwish - Yesterwynde [Lanternlight, An Ocean of Strange Islands]
Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet [Espresso, Taste]
shower curtain - words from a wishing well [bedbugs, put me on a shelf]
*Unfortunately, copperplate took down the first two albums she released, dream within a dream being the first one. So I can't link to it or any of its songs.
Attic Ocean is 2/2 so far, this year and last year, and I don't usually put EPs in my top lists. Retriever seems to be garnering them more recognition, especially the song Lilies and Sea.
I've been listening to beabadoobee since her first album, but This Is How Tomorrow Moves pretty quickly became my favorite album of hers.
The kinda mysterious copperplate seems to have gotten her start earlier this year. She released five albums and an EP. Pretty crazy. I guess I'm glad I snagged dream within a dream and réapparaître before she took them down.
Was really happy with NewDad's debut album, and it seems like it's been pretty well received. It has such a cool cover too. Definitely one of the more interesting and memorable covers I've seen in quite awhile. Apparently it became a meme in China where people were recreating it in their own ways.
I've liked Floor Jansen since her days in After Forever, but, admittedly, I haven't been all that into her Nightwish albums (probably doesn't help that I burned out of symphonic metal a long time ago). Yesterwynde was a very pleasant surprise.
I checked out Sabrina Carpenter out of curiosity because a lot of people were talking about her and got addicted to Espresso. I usually only like singles from pop artists, but Short n' Sweet is a fun album with fun, witty lyrics. I used the alternate cover above because I like it more.
A lot of honorable mentions too.
Belle Chen - A Ravel in the Forest
Brittany Bindrim - Velella Velella
Build Buildings - Ecotone
Chelsea Wolfe - She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She
Clinic Stars - Only Hinting
copperplate - contentment
Diffident Daffodils - Indifferent
Future Palace - Distortion
Gavin Turek - Diva of the People
Green Day - Saviors
Iress - Sleep Now, in Reverse
The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy
Lustmord - Much Unseen Is Also Here
Softcult - Heaven
Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God

"GIRL STRANGLED IN PARLOR AS FAMILY SLEEPS UPSTAIRS," Toronto Star. June 1, 1943. Page 2. ---- Youth, 18, Tells Police Girl Is Dead on Chesterfield ---- AT FORT WILLIAM --- Special to The Star Fort William June 1 - Miss Antonetti Rossetti, 17. Larks St., is dead and an 18-year-old youth is being held by police as a result of an apparent strangulation case here today. The girl, according to police, was found lying on the chesterfield in the front room of the home of her uncle, Antonio Leonzio, who, together with his wife and family, were asleep upstairs, and who knew nothing of the case until police called to investigate.
In a statement issued today, police said the suspect came into the police station about 1 a.m. and reported to the sergeant, Charles Palmer, that the girl was dead.
He is being held by police pending investigation and instructions from the crown attorney.
The youth is said to have given police a letter purported to have been written by himself and to have made a statement.
"As a result," police stated. "Sergt. Palmer and Con. Harry Turner went to the home and found Miss Rossetti dead on the chesterfield, apparently strangled. No weapon or instrument was found."
The suspect, police said, has been living in west Fort William and has been keeping company with the girl.

Every Record I Own - Day 791: Lustmord Dark Matter
According to the sticker that came on the packaging for this 2xLP by dark ambient artist Lustmord, the material on Dark Matter was "derived from an audio library of cosmological activity collected between 1993 and 2003. Gathered from various sources including NASA, the Very Large Array, the NTL Radio Astronomy Observatory and various educational institutions, and private contributors throughout the USA."
Much like Thomas Köner's Permafrost album, Dark Matter isn't something you throw on when you crave a melody or a beat. Instead, it sounds pretty much exactly like you'd imagine based on the above description. It sounds like the void of outer space---a sound bath that swaddles the listener. In some ways, it's anti-music. It's something I put on when I don't want silence but I also don't want to be distracted by anything that approaches structure.
It's also really good to fall asleep to on your headphones, especially if you're sharing a room with a snorer.
