Postcards from Snagglepuss
In the waters of Hawksbill Creek, by night
ALONG HAWKSBILL CREEK, LURAY, VA: Inspired by one of O. Winston Link's more famous nighttime photos showing steam power on the Norfolk and Western Railway in its twilight, our party decided to decamp, via the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Skyline Drive of Shenandoah National Park, to the town of Luray.
Though otherwise famous for the Caverns of Luray, one of the more legendary examples of show caves east of the Mississippi, our party of vagabonds decided to hie our motorhome down to South Hawksbill Street, along Hawksbill Creek even, facing southerly towards the bridges on Virginia Avenue (alias Business US 340) and the Norfolk Southern Railway (which was formerly the Norfolk and Western) over same ... which also fronts on the Luray Greenway, a bicycle and walking path.
And you have to wonder how many of the locals in that part of Luray took notice of who we were, or even the fact of our being vintage-type cartoon characters, during our presence to pay homage to O. Winston Link's photographic triumph ... but if there were any, boy, were they stunned! (But still, one needs to consider that the photograph faced south along Hawksbill Creek, and that the train was heading easterly towards Norfolk in the original.)
One modest little party of locals, though, were rather fascinated to the point of perhaps being willing to pose with our party--which, along with Huckleberry, the Bungle Brothers, Crazy Claws and yours truly, by now was bound to include The King and Sheena, themselves on a road trip after the Gatlinburg Cattanooga Cats Easter Parade.
"Heeeeeeeyyyyyy ... so what exactly are we up to here?" was how The King put it with the usual leonine-type swagger. To which Huckleberry Hound explained that we would be paying homage photographically to a certain famous photograph by O. Winston Link as was taken here in the summer of 1956.
"Only using a cameraphone," added I.
"And I take it we sort of plan to splash around in the creek, especially as a train passes by?" (By which time sunset was starting to become obvious and you could hear the horns of diesel locomotives approaching Luray a few miles out.)
"How did you guess as much?"
By which time we decided to get the selfie stick all ready--it was of the telescoping sort, to make matters even more interesting--and to get the pose all set up. Now, all that was needed was to ensure that a train would be passing at "just the right moment" to encapsulate O. Winston Link's spirit....
Though it may have taken several practice shots, Patience rewarded itself as "the blue hour" made itself known to Luray and the Page Valley, the banks of Hawksbill Creek, even ... not to mention a full moon on the rise as a manifest freight made its presence known, horn blaring distinctly, as if in salute....
And when we finally managed to get the photograph with all of us standing in Hawksbill Creek, we couldn't help but give silent thanks to O. Winston Link "himself" for the inspiration his photograph of the scene guided us.
