thinking about kirayoshi struggling with mental health issues as he gets older. and there are so many reasons why it could be happening and also things like that don't have to have a reason why. but i'm thinking about kira, sitting in the aftermath of watching him deal with it—maybe they all decided it would be a good idea for him to go stay with her for a time, or maybe in this universe the o'briens never left—and just wondering. mothers' bereavement during pregnancy has been linked to impacts in later childhood development; there was hardly a child born on bajor unaffected by this, but to kira, yoshi should have been safer, luckier. yet while she carried him she fought a war and then lost latha, fala, mobara, lupaza, furel—saw them killed one by one in front of her and felt it in every piece of her being, nearly got yoshi and herself both vented into space in the blind agony of it. did her grief soak itself into his body, his mind, his pagh? how does she conceptualize that possibility? what do they say?
#anyway i'm watching 'the darkness and the light' again#makes me insane makes me crazy once again cannot believe they did that to her. the scene with lupaza and furel im a goner#when he stays his name is printed as kira yoshi on all the bajoran documents. they grapple with what that means#anyway maybe later i'll research surrogacy epigenetics and have a field day#deep space nine#kira nerys#kirayoshi o'brien

Rewatching DS9 again and I am just so interested at how an average Bajoran would view Kira by the end of the series. How an average Cardassian would? We know that a lot of what she does is known to the Bajoran people. Shakaar mentions Furel and Lupaza bragging about her whenever they get news of the station. But lets actually take a look at this:
She is the highest ranking Bajoran on DS9 outranked only by the Emissary
Most times Sisko did anything in the capacity as the Emissary, Kira was one step behind and to the right
She was with Kai Opaka, the most widely loved and respected Bajoran, when she made her journey through the Celestial Temple and “answered the call of the prophets”
She was highly respected (and loved) by Vedek Bareil who was hugely popular on Bajor (he could very well have been Kai if he hadn’t taken the blame for Kai Opaka’s actions during the Occupation)
She and Kai Winn had a well known feud and after Kai Winn’s fall from grace at the end of the show, Kira must come out pretty great to everyone else
She is the one who found and saved the great Bajoran hero, Li Nalas, from a Cardassian work camp and then within a week saved Bajor from a civil war that had been encouraged by Cardassians.
Between her saving Li Nalas and his fellow prisoners AND finding the Ravinok and saving the Bajorans (and Cardassians and Ziyal) from the Breen mines, was she the person Bajorans turned to when searching for their lost love ones? Was she a symbol to those who kept looking for their loved ones because Kira Nerys found those thought to be lost?
She prevented ANOTHER Bajoran Civil War and helped elect Shakaar as the First Minister of Bajor. Again being associated with a widely loved and respected member of Bajoran society.
Kira was in charge of DS9 during Dominion Occupation and started up the station’s resistance cell
She was permitted to use the Orb of Time, one of Bajor’s most sacred objects
She was the chosen by a Prophet to be their vessel during the Reckoning with the Pah-Wraith...and the KAI was on the same station. But it was KIRA who was chosen
She plays chicken with a Romulan fleet...and wins!
She was a key figure in the Dominion War. She started as a resistance fighter who was assigned to a falling apart, unimportant old Cardassain station and becomes the Colonel of the single most important port in the Alpha Quadrant. She is the right hand of the Emissary. She is widely respected by many beloved figures in Bajoran society.
And this list is just the most public things that have happened to her. This doesn’t even take into account any of the stories about her that involve her dealing with whatever BS the Star Trek universe decides to throw at the characters that week. Klingons beam in and fight? Gets stabbed and keeps fighting. Emissary is transported to 2024? Kira is on the team that pulls him out.
By the end of season seven, do politicians on Bajor hold their breath or breathe a sigh of relief if Kira gets involved? Do Vedeks seek her out to ask her about being possessed by a prophet? About her experiences with the Orbs? About Kai Opaka’s last words? Do families still grieving those missing from the Occupation petition her to look for the lost?
And how about the Cardassians?
The Cardassian government would probably never publicly admit to any time she foiled their plans, but Tekeny Ghemor tells her that she has her own section in the Cardassian Central Archives and is a public figure on Cardassia
Would the Cardassians in the Breen mine whisper their thanks among their family that Kira Nerys found them?
Tekeny Ghemor, someone who was respected enough to be considered as the face for the Cardassian resistance against the Dominion controlled Cardassian puppet government, publicly considered her his daughter/family by asking her to participate in the Shri-tal ritual and give her all of his secrets prior to his death (something highly valued in Cardassian society)
She was a part of Damar’s resistance. She helped them fight the Dominion and was with Damar when he died for Cardassia. In the story of how Damar was martyred for Cardassia’s freedom from the Dominion, Kira Nerys, a Bajoran, is heavily featured.
In all Bajoran/Cardassian relations, do Cardassians seek to involve Kira as a woman of her word who will treat in good faith or do they cross their fingers and hope she is nowhere near their business?
Can you tell I think about Kira Nerys a lot?
#DS9#Deep Space Nine#Kira Nerys#I love Kira so very very much#Her character development over all seven seasons is beautiful to watch#And I think everyone should love her#Everyone on DS9 must have a reputation on Bajor just#by proximity to The Plot#And obviously Sisko is probably the most prominent figure between Bajoran Cardassian Federation and Maquis society#But I argue that Kira is the next well known with her own mini following on Bajor and maybe even Cardassia

"If I could change an in-canon death I would save Ziyal" this, "If I could change an in-canon death I would save Jadzia" that. To be honest with you, if I could change an in-canon death I would save Lupaza and Furel.

I really like Kira Nerys. Let's discuss her and organized religion A hothead, experienced freedom fighter, child soldier, passionate, kind, really good at self-control. In [DS9 S01E19: Duet], she learns that life can be complex and difficult and ultimately learns to forgive Marritza. She learns that hate has to end at some point to make peace. But there is one aspect of Kira that I always find unnerving: Her absolute blind spot when it comes to faith. And DS9's handling of organized religion. 01. Bajoran Culture and Cultures in Star Trek Because Kira is the Bajoran character we see most, and the only fleshed out character where "being Bajoran" is a major character trait, we mostly experience the culture through her. Yes there's Leeta, but there is just a single instance where it plays into the story that she's Bajoran. [DS9 S05E20: Ferengi Love Songs]. Leeta wants a Bajoran wedding, while Rom tries to hold onto what's left of his Ferengi identity. Rom ultimately lets go of all the Ferengi stuff. Good for him. Of course there is also Kai Winn, but her stories mostly circle about her being Kai Winn, not her being a Bajoran. There is a single instance here too, where her Bajoran identity plays into the story, and her past during the Occupation. ([DS9: S05E10 Rapture]) She explains that she teached the faith of the prophets and was imprisoned for it. The other Bajoran characters are less fleshed out characters. Shakaar, Lupaza, and Furel. Even Li Nalasm remember him? Ro Laren is there of course, but her job was to create conflict in the perfect world of the Enterprise-D. Not being Bajoran, primarily. Star Trek does this more than once. Experiencing a whole culture through a single character. For a long time, Spock was the only fleshed out Vulcan we got to see, besides one episode with Sarek. Plus Sarek in the movies. It took decades until Tuvok showed us more than Spock's perspective. And ENT with T'Pol and the Vulcans arc finally fleshed out the species more. Jadzia is the only Trill that matters. Kind of a one trick pony species. The people with the symbiotes. And when Ezri finally shows up, we learn a bit more about them when they're not centered about their symbiotes. Cardassia is a good counter-example: We have Dukat, Damar and Garak to show us Cardassian culture from various perspectives. Plus the Tribunal episode, TNG's torture of Picard ("There are four lights!") We learn a lot about Cardassia. The DS9 treatment of the Ferengi will always be top notch.
02. Kira and Religion So back to Bajor, Kira and religion. Hehe, Bajor Kira. Sorry. As a non-religious man, I have my problems sharing her point of view. Trusting in faith, even when it contradicts rationality. There are two main storylines that illuminate this problem: 1. [DS9: S04E17 Accession] 2. Kira's relationship with Kai Winn. In Accession, Akorem Laan takes over the job as Emissary and installs himself as a conservative, even reactionary, religious leader. Bajorans are told to follow their d'jarras. A caste system. And Kira as our PoV Bajoran, simply....does it. Her D'jarra is Ih'valla, the artists caste. She actually had to struggle with this before. In [DS9: S02E02 The Circle] she tried living in the monastery with Bareil. She tells him she sucks at being an artist. Kira really tried. So when Akorem takes over the religious leadership (maintaining a good working relationship with Kai Winn, what a red flag), Kira shows us how Bajor reacts. They simply.....comply? Odo even tries out the sceptical, rational PoV. Kira just brushes it aside. DS9 does this a few times, actually. Respecting their characters' choices rooted in faith. Odo fighting Weyoun calling him a god on every occasion. Worf and Kira agreeing on Sisko's choice of trusting the Prophets in [DS9: S05E10: Rapture]. Weyoun 6's sacrifice. Even Quark's little prayers to his piggybank. What I really dislike about the plot of Accession is the Deus Ex Machina. The characters are not confronted with their choices. Akorem Laan and Vedek Porta don't go to jail for murdering some guy. Kira doesn't have to deal with supporting a regime that got opressive in a heartbeat. What I would have really liked to see were the Bajorans that disagree. The ones Akorem threatens with deportation. Sorry, our 45 minutes are up, the Prophets endorse The Sisko, Akorem is gone. Kira even still likes his poetry! Yay! Pity. I would have loved to see the consequences. And see if Kira finds a way to deal with blind obedience. Which brings me to my second point. 03. Kira Nerys and Kai Winn
While Gul Dukat is mainly Sisko's antagonist, Kai Winn is Kira's. She basically killed Kira's boyfriend, cashed in on his accomplishments and literally stole his fame, after she cheated her way to becoming Space Pope. Which would have been him. Bareil. Interesting side story: Bareil does the same thing Kira does. He blindly trusts the religious system. Bareil doesn't question Kai Winn's authority. Well, then she kills him by overworking him, and he lets her. Gladly. He decides to get killed. Because he trusts the Prophets. There's another side question here. Are the Prophets to be trusted? Are they doing good things for Bajor? or are they selfish? I basically think they're selfish af, and I can explain. But that's a story for another time.
So Kai Winn did a terrorism in [S01E20: In the Hands of the Prophets], gets people killed, supports an insurrection (but to be honest, her support never got public), cheats herself to be Pope, nearly starts a civil war because of Shakaar. Kira is in a powerful position. She is one of the most trusted advisors to the Emissary of the Prophets, is an administrator of DS9, was a member of the famed Shakaar Resistance Cell. She obviously has power. Military power, political power. She knows how to play politics. There is a dialogue about this in [DS9 S01E13: "Battle Lines] And she obviously knows Kai Winn is horrible. Dangerous. When does she talk back? Once. She does it once. In [DS9 S02E24: The Collaborateur], she is snarky and gets scolded by Winn. She never openly defies her again. Kira is complicit with a religious organisation that constantly punishes her for it. That would force her into a career she hates. That killed her boyfriend and robbed his dead body. Kai Winn even gloats over it a few episodes later. And in Accession, we see the climax of this: Even when the religious regime gets captured by bad people, she complies. 04: Fazit I would have loved to see Kira deal with the contradictions. See people who don't comply with Kai Winn's church. Who challenge that system. Because like in our world, organisations can and will be captured by bad players, in bad faith. The ability of political structures to withstand capture and abuse is essential. This always starts with the people being able to recognize it and fight back. I don't like it. I'm more like Odo. Rational, naturalistic. I don't understand how one can think with religious faith. Especially because Kira has such a temper and a sense for injustice. She challenges Winn from within the system, yes. With Shakaar. For a while. Then Shakaar loses steam as a character and we don't delve further into the matter. Simply DS9 having enough depth to allow such discussions about their characters is one if the reasons I love it so much. Stay safe out there, people. Stay vigilant in the face of powerful people. Thank you for reading.

Kira Nerys had the craziest family.
She had her biological parents who both died, but she also had her resistance family, Furel and Lupaza, and her religious family, like Kai Opaka, who was like her old aunt and all of her religious friends. Then she had a Cardassian symbolic father (Ghemor) and a Cardassian uncle (Maritza) who both died. But then she had a human baby with O'Brien and Keiko, and then she had a Cardassian/Bajoran daughter named Ziyal.
And she obviously had her ds9 family, which was made up of humans, Klingons, trill, etc.
So she's the living embodiment of...your family really can just be a collection of people you find and take care of and gather like strays.
And it's a beautiful family.
She was like...that lesbian aunt who collects children and surrogate parents without even meaning to.
Edit: oh my god I'm so fucking sorry.
Jake was like a son to her. You can't tell me he wasn't.

Trektober day 4: Ghost Stories
(prompt: First Contact)
Nerys was twelve years old and on her way to being a fully-fledged member of the Bajoran Resistance, but she still had a bedtime. Shakaar was strict on that sort of thing. But tonight she couldn’t sleep, and had crept back to the fire, and neither he nor any of the other adults had said anything. Lupaza moved her plasma rifle to one side, and Nerys snuggled in next to her on a cushion that had seen better days. She thought that if she stayed quiet, maybe no one would send her back to bed.
They didn’t normally have a campfire; the risk was always too great that the smoke would give them away. But there had been protests against Cardassian rule in Dahkur Province, and the Cardassians had responded as they always did, and now there were plumes of smoke rising from a dozen places across the countryside. Their one little fire didn’t stand out.
The luxury of a fire had given the evening a festival mood. Ornak and Klin were drinking kanar they’d liberated from a Cardassian skimmer, and Gantt was toasting a skewer of jumja fruit in the flames. He burned his mouth on one and swore. Nerys couldn’t keep from giggling.

do you have a favorite minor Trek character, for example one that only appears in one episode or a handful of scenes throughout the show(s) or, even better, one that is only ever mentioned in dialogue? Do you have specific headcanons/thoughts for them? (Feel free to make this three characters, one per category, if you want!)
Ziranne Idaris my blorbo obscurebo!!! I have soooo many thoughts and feelings about herrr
For those not in the know, Ziranne is an unjoined Trill & Jadzia's biological sister- only ever mentioned in dialogue (and not even named in canon!) Anyway, I yoinked her name from memory alpha and basically just turned her into my own chaotic OC <3 (shoutout to @fancy-a-dance-brigadier for fully enabling my insanity and dissecting screenshots of the glassware Ziranne apparently sent Jadzia in canon with me hahaha)
First of all, I'm obsessed with how Jadzia has this whole family she basically never talks about. They weren't even invited to her wedding! (Or, if they were, they didn't even bother to show!) What was that about? In my mind, there was no drastic event or anything- they still talk, but things were always a bit fraught between Jadzia & her sister and the joining was just sort of the death knell to their relationship. I think they were both extremely ambitious & competitive teenagers and both of them wanted to qualify for a joining- and while they were never directly pitted against each other, that reality was always there. Maybe Ziranne just never had Jadzia's work ethic. Maybe she was secretly happy when Jadzia was kicked out of the program. Maybe now that she's joined and Old and Wise, their whole beef seems very small and immature to Jadzia- but to Ziranne, it's very much real and can't just be swept away, and Jadzia respects that. It's complicated!
(My personal hc is that Ziranne works for the Symbiosis Commission now, and this Will be important later in my Trill fic mwahahaha)
I also think about Pel (the Ferengi woman who disguised herself as a man to work at Quark's) so much, I even wrote a whole fic about her last year (...which I am still yet to post lol). And of course Richard & Amsha Bashir! I have sooo many thoughts & headcanons about them and I've discussed them so much & written so much fic with them that I sometimes forget they were just in one (1) episode😂
I think Leeta is too prominent a character to count, but the amount of lore I have about her in my head is so disproportionate to her screentime I think she deserves an honourable mention. Maybe Furel and Lupaza? Apart from that, I'm sure there's more but, Lal & Nurse Ogawa from TNG, and that dinosaur man from VOY: Distant Origin

oh jesus! i had assumed that the bajoran earrings signify family ties (since ppl indicated them as caste signifiers in that episode) and If im right that in combination with kira being an orphan and lupaza having made hers after her first outing with the cell is making me kind of distraught

Sometimes I think about how Kira lost almost everyone she ever loved by the end of DS9. Mom, dad, brothers, Opaka, Bariel, Furel, Lupaza, Ghemor, Ziyal, Jadzia, & who knows how many others to death; Odo to the Founders; Sisko to the Phophets; the O'Briens moving off the station. But she never stopped wearing her heart on her sleeve, she stayed open & empathetic. Her resilience never ceases to astound me.
I agree, she's such a resilient and kind-hearted character and I love her a lot.
(Ziyal and Jadzia dying were the most egregious, especially for Jadzia since it was a behind the scenes exec meddling thing).
Kira Nerys is such a great character and so nuanced.
Kira and Seven are currently my two favorites for how beautifully nuanced they are.
