Leeds continue strong start with cup win over Bolton

Leeds United continued their strong start to the season with a victory over Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.

Patrick Bamford gave the hosts a deserved lead with a clinical low finish for his first goal for the club.

Samu Saiz doubled the advantage with a powerful shot after an excellent break.

Erhun Oztumer got the visitors back in early in the second half with a neat effort, and debutant Jonathan Grounds came close to a leveller, but Leeds held out.

The hosts could and perhaps should have been out of sight by the break after a dominant first-half display, Bamford and Jack Harrison both guilty of missing presentable opportunities.

Bolton started the second half in much better fashion and got their reward when Oztumer scored from the edge of the area.

However, that was ultimately as good as it got for the Trotters as Leeds maintained their 100% start to the season under new boss Marcelo Bielsa.

Wildschut earns Bolton victory at West Brom

Substitute Yanic Wildschut scored a last-minute winner as Bolton snatched a dramatic opening-day Championship victory at West Brom.

The forward, on a season-long loan from Norwich, tapped in from close range from a corner to condemn Albion, relegated from the Premier League last term, to defeat on their return to the second tier.

Bolton, who only stayed up by beating Nottingham Forest on the final day of last season, had earlier taken the lead when Josh Magennis headed in Sammy Ameobi’s cross against the run of play.

Darren Moore’s side almost snatched an equalised in stoppage time but Ahmed Hegazi’s header came back off the bar.
