The modern electronica comes in all shapes and sizes as we see, though a good question in here would be – which musicians could be called the major influences? I would claim one of those might be Simian Mobile Disco. Mind you, these two aren't the originators of the modern electronica, since the latter had a variety of different predecessors, yet their outfit did point towards the developments of the style during the noughts already. Yes, they anticipated the brand together with some other musicians we probably mentioned in some other discussions. Thus, their latest works feel like a validation of their path thanks to their scene becoming close to the way the charted. Still, one does ask oneself more – did they plan this?

Deep Throat Choir - Camille - first single from forthcoming album

After reverential reviews of their 2017 debut, Be OK, Deep Throat Choir return with their new single Camille. Taking its name from Children of the Compost, a collection of future fables by the eco-feminist writer Donna Haraway, the track is “an exploration of the feeling that the boundaries between yourself and the natural world, or somebody else, are entirely porous and dissolving”, says choir leader Luisa Gerstein. A music video for the track has been created by London based visual artist Rachel Sale.

It is the first single from Deep Throat Choir’s forthcoming album, and marks the foundation of the Amorphous Sounds collective. The label takes its name from the lyrics to Camille, in which the group sing “I’m reeling / I’m restless / porous / amorphous”. Describing the collaborative practice of the artists working within Deep Throat Choir, it gives name to an already existing collective of music makers from a wide-range of disciplines, and is a statement of intent for future cross-stitched imaginings. The label is founded by Luisa Gerstein and Anika Mottershaw.

[Album + Video] Deep Throat Choir mit neuem Album und Single!

Das Londoner Kollektiv Deep Throat Choir, bestehend aus weiblichen und nicht-binären Mitglieder*innen, und gegründet von der Landshapes-Sängerin Luisa Gerstein, kündigt ihr zweites Album „In Order To Know You“ für den 03. Dezember digital only über Bella Union an!

Mit „Alchemilla“ präsentieren sie außerdem den ersten Song und Albumopener. Mit minimalistischer und dennoch experimenteller Instrumentierung baut der Song vor allem auf die stimmlichen Qualitäten der Mitglieder*innen und den herrlich luftigen Melodien. Dabei stechen diese Tugenden vor allem hervor: ein Gefühl der Kraft aus Gemeinschaft, Austausch kollektiver Ideen und dennoch der Begrüßung von individueller Besonderheit.

Das 2017er Debütalbum „Be OK“ war fast ausschließlich eine Ansammlung an Covern – das neue Album sind nun alles neue, eigene Songs. Luisa Gerstein führt dazu ergänzend aus: “This album is the alchemy of all the specific voices and players that make up the choir, and a collaborative process of writing and sharing music and ideas. Sonically, I wanted to move beyond just voices and percussion, to see what richness could be brought with acoustic instruments and electronics, and to transition from a choir that does covers to a band with loads of vocalists.”

Die elf Stücke präsentieren die individuellen Erfahrungen der Mitglieder*innen, welche neben Gerstein noch die Solist*innen Tanya Auclair, Liv Stones, Holly Holden, Elly Condron, Miryam Solomon, Fikir Assefa, Maddie Rix, Rosa Slade, Heloise Tunstall-Behrens und Fran Lobo beinhalten. Dazu gesellten sich Bläser und ein Pianist. Es ensteht ein Sound zwischen Kammermusik und beinahe Ambient-Sphären. Organische Sounds mixen sich mit digitalen Feinheiten. Doch bleiben die Stimmen der Sänger*innen immer im Mittelpunkt der Musik.
