¿Es posible enamorarse de alguien sin haberle visto?… “Love is Blind México”
Tumblr media

Detective Pikachu Review (Spoilers)
Well, this is a nice, delightful surprise. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu manages to clear the very low bar/narrow superlative of “good live action American video game movie” and is a pretty fun time at the movies apart from that. It’s not quite groundbreaking and feels distinctly for kids/played safe in a number of ways, but I found myself warming to its modest charms and tech-noir stylings, as well as the high spirits with which it is told. It sits comfortably among other charmingly B-grade efforts, if with a more polished feel, like 1995′s Mortal Kombat and last year’s Rampage, though the latter also managed to be the best American Godzilla movie to date/until King of the Monsters comes out later this month.
Taking cues from other kid-noir favorites like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Zootopia (although I would say it’s not as good as either of those), after an early, charmingly doofy small-town scene that establishes our human hero Tim Goodman (Justice Smith, no relation to Will), the film takes us to Ryme City, a supposed paradise created by disabled billionaire Howard Clifford (Bill Nighy, very fun in a two-part performance), where Pokemon and humans live in harmony; training and battles are illegal, though this point is rendered moot by an apparently healthy underground fighting circuit. Tim has arrived to take care of the affairs of his late father Harry, a detective who’s died in the line of duty and, naturally, had a complicated relationship with his son and Pokemon. Tim is quite happy to do said caretaking and leave, but he soon gets entangled in a mystery thanks to Lucy (Big Little Lies and Blockers’ Kathryn Newton, very charming here), a news network intern hungry for a big reporting job, and a disgruntled Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) that claims to have no memory and can speak English only to Tim. The pair soon discover that Harry might not quite be as dead as claimed, that he was onto something big, as all movie detectives are, and the race is on.
If you have seen a good share of mysteries, this will not hold much in the way of surprise developments outside of perhaps one revelation about the nature of one character’s silence that provides some fun visuals. It is fairly easy to guess that there is more to Pikachu’s story than even he realizes or that Howard is not so magnanimous as he appears, though everything fits handily together in the end (I question the usage of his disability as a plot/characterization point in some regards, but as noted, Nighy classes up the joint admirably, especially having fun once a certain climactic development occurs). This is essentially Baby’s First Mystery, but that is no great sin, and the fun, as ever in these types of things, comes more in the form of the world and how our odd couple navigate their way through it.
On that note, cast-wise, Reynolds proves to be an able Pikachu indeed, coming off as a distinct character rather than simply Deadpool-lite, frustrated and defensive for some very good reasons and running his mouth with a genially funny running commentary, if an occasionally off-color one at times. Smith proves a handy grounding, an energetic straight-man who nonetheless does his due with the slightly heavier Daddy Issues material and the unenviable task of directing 90% of his lines to an unseen creature that barely reaches up to his knees. Newton proves a total delight, getting a hilarious intro that gets the wind knocked out of its sails and providing a nice sense of Lois Lane-y fire and gumption. The supporting cast apart from Nighy also holds some fun, with Ken Watanabe showing up briefly to do his dignified Ken Watanabe thing while getting to show a bit of range with things like doting on a very grumpy Snubbull, Omar Chaparro cuts an intimidating-if-slightly-goofy figure as an underground Pokemon trainer in a key scene (it’s a very similar energy to a lot of the rando one-shots found in the anime, and I mean that as a high compliment), Deadpool’s Karan Soni pops up briefly as Tim’s too-encouraging hometown friend, and Chris Geere manages an enjoyably heel-then-face turn as Clifford’s son. There’s also brief flashback interludes with Josette Simon as Tim’s grandmother that are sweet and dignified, while also comfortably revealing that Tim is mixed-race, which feels nicely normalized here.
Ultimately, the biggest battle (ahem) to be fought here was making Pokemon convincing in a semi-realistic setting with flesh-and-blood people, and in this, I would say the filmmakers have succeeded beyond all expectations. There’s been much in the way of discussing this sort of thing since the recent release of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer (full disclosure: I don’t think it looks like a disaster, and this is FAR from the worst this franchise has gotten in terms of feeling undignified), but I think what works here that the Sonic people don’t seem to have quite figured out fully is that the Pokemon feel like living, breathing creatures. There’s a grotesque-cute quality to much of them, with nice little surprises of behavior: how a Charizard reacts to a swift change in fortune is almost worth the price of admission, Psyduck proves an endearing scene partner to Pikachu in a cramped car, and a group of Bulbasaur preside over a lovely grace note late in Act 2. As usual, Mewtwo’s appearance shows him as an intriguing figure in much the same way as in previous adaptations, though how is best left to the viewer to discover, and I wish they hadn’t blown his appearance in the ads. The world the Pokemon inhabit is itself endlessly inventive and intriguing; this is definitely a movie for freeze-frame people, as there’s so much detail packed into every frame, and the tech-noir environment proves to be a surprising fit for them, though brief other portions point to more “traditional” ways of making a Pokemon movie that I think could work now. Its sense of humor is also on point; outside of Pikachu’s smart-assery, there are naturally lots of references and in-jokes to the games and other media, with the film’s biggest for-fans laugh being how the theme song works its way into things.
All told, the film doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but neither does it bore, and in a subgenre filled with either delightful schlock like Kombat or Street Fighter, and deeply noble failures like Super Mario Bros. or WarCraft (god, that one breaks my heart), that is no small feat. Its weirdest passages, like this year’s earlier WB family action outing Shazam!, remind me of the darker, stranger kid’s films of my own youth like Labyrinth or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I think that comparison will be ultimately kind in the future. Others have made this comparison, but this has the potential to be a kickoff point like Iron Man was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe; while it’s not quite crackling with that type of electricity (pardon the pun), time will tell on that score. For now, it’s relentlessly charming, and sometimes that’s enough.

About the Movie
The first-ever live-action Pokémon adventure, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” stars Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu and is based on the beloved Pokémon brand—one of the world’s most popular, multi-generation entertainment properties and one of the most successful media franchises of all time.  Fans everywhere can now experience a Pikachu on the big screen as never before, as Detective Pikachu, a Pokémon like no other.  The film also showcases a wide array of beloved Pokémon, each with its own unique traits and personality.
The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened.  Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Detective Pikachu, they join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
“POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” also stars Justice Smith as Tim, and Kathryn Newton as Lucy, a junior reporter following her first big story; as well as Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, and Rita Ora, with Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe and Bill Nighy.
The film was directed by Rob Letterman, from a story by Dan Hernandez & Benji Samit and Nicole Perlman, screenplay by Dan Hernandez & Benji Samit and Rob Letterman and Derek Connolly, based on the “Detective Pikachu” video game developed by Creatures Inc.  It was produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter for Legendary Pictures, and Hidenaga Katakami and Don McGowan for The Pokémon Company. Executive producers were Joe Caracciolo, Jr., Ali Mendes, Tsunekazu Ishihara, Kenji Okubo, Toshio Miyahara, Hiro Matsuoka, and Koji Ueda.
Letterman’s creative filmmaking team includes two-time Oscar nominated director of photography John Mathieson, production designer Nigel Phelps, editors Mark Sanger and James Thomas, and costume designer Suzie Harman. The music is composed by Henry Jackman. Visual effects are by Moving Picture Company and Framestore.
Launched in 1996 to overwhelming response, the Pokémon brand is a global sensation that now encompasses a robust video gaming fandom with over 324 million units sold worldwide; trading card games available in 11 languages with more than 25.7 billion cards purchased; an anime television series in its 21st season that is available more than 160 countries; and over 20 animated films; as well as books, manga comics, music, toys, merchandise, and apps, including the wildly popular Pokémon GO, that has been downloaded over 850 million times and is enjoyed across the globe by fans of all ages.
