I did not use a pattern for this, I did however take some notes. The neckpiece and the body are seperate (just to make it easier to get into). I used a little less than 10m of chiffon (which I randomly found in my fabric stash lol), some lace I had lying around, a buttonhole ribbon and some pearl buttons both of which I got on Amazon. Would definitely recommend at least 10m of fabric if not more for ultimate ruffliness.
The neckpiece was made by cutting out four 70cm circles with a 10cm hole in the middle and sewing those together to form one big long ruffle. I then sewed four parallel lines, with super long stitches and bunched up the fabric to create the ruffle effect. I left the bottom of the neckpiece raw, just because I think it adds a bit of texture. Then I sewed on a buttonhole ribbon and the lil pearl buttons (which I got from amazon).
The body is just a 170cm wide and 150cm long piece and a 170cm x 170cm long piece sewn together, ruffled at the top and with a band of elastic sewn on. The nightgown does have a train so I cut a lil curve into the bottom of the longest piece.
The biggest challenge was the sleeve. Chiffon doesnt hold it's shape very well, so I mixed together some starching fluid (boiled starch and water) and ironed the hell out of it. The bottom of the sleeve I deliberately cut way too long so I could ruffle it. Last thing I did was add some lace to the cuffs. I probably would do a few things differently next time but I'm happy with how it came out. Now I just need a white wig lol ^^
And here's the finished result:
Btw, I also found this promo picture and decided it would look great as a background, so if you wanna use it yourself, here ya go, I edited out Lucille for ya. Go nuts.
PS: actual footage of me running down the stairs in this lovely flowy nightgown arrrrggghhh I love it so much anyway thanks for reading love ya
"well what happens if you have EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA in that lovely Victorian gown? hmm? huh? check and mate; modern clothing is superior!"
you fool
you underestimate the amount of dignity I will sacrifice on the Internet to be educational
because guess what? I got food poisoning in full Lucille Sharpe cosplay (with historical undergarments) at a friend's Halloween party last year
so I can tell you that, if you get intense diarrhea in a Victorian gown, you beat a speedy retreat to the toilet- and yes, post-1850s, there is a very good chance it WOULD be a flush toilet in many locations, but sub in "privy" if you like -you hike everything below the waist without regard for wrinkling, you arrange yourself on the toilet so that the crotch seam of your drawers is as wide open as humanly possible, you do not stray far from aforesaid toilet if you can avoid it, and at your earliest convenience you excuse yourself from public society to go home and change into more convenient loungewear for the duration of your affliction
kind of like you do in modern clothing
no, I would not say that the hiking of skirts and propping-open of drawers takes longer than unbuttoning and shoving down modern jeans/panties. no, nothing got soiled in the process
so now you know what happened when Victorian ladies got the shits. you're welcome
("but what if you're poor??? what if you're at work??? this is just rich people-" what do you do if you get diarrhea at work now? and don't think you can distract me from the fact that this question is generally meant as a smug, Well You THINK The Dresses Are Pretty, but ACKSHULLY... style of "gotcha," and therefore primarily brought up re: upper-class clothing)
Lucille progress! So excited for this costume!!
I track my process much more on my instagram, but since I barely posted anything about this on here yet anyway, I kinda figured, why not~
Only have a short list of things left to do. Still moving slowly towards getting it done due to still not having much spare time (and to it being very time consuming *cough* the leaves *cough*) but I’m hoping to get it done at least next month.
The dummy is a slightly larger (and shorter) size so it looks a little odd but so far I’m very happy with how it’s coming along! :)
Lady Lucille Sharpe made by me based on original costume design by Kate Hawley for Crimson Peak.
It’s not fully finished, I am still working on making more corded leaves, a new jacket, and a removable pleated train.
Based on the silhouette and origin of Lucille’s black dress, I placed it in the Natural Form Era (1877-1882). Despite the name, understructures are still very important to creating the Natural Form shape. I created a hip pad and hoop skirt and these last photos show what a difference they make.
Thought I'd share my Edith Cushing cosplay here since my last Crimson Peak post actually got attention. I worked really hard on this cosplay but it's not getting as many views as my other videos for some reason.
Last ones for now, I swear. But I wanted to take some well-lit shots of my Lucille Sharpe makeup from last night. I tried for a while to give myself Jessica Chastain's cleft chin via shading, but eventually gave up. I think I'll def have to start straightening my hair for this one in the future, it behaved so much nicer than it did at the con. And I actually had the time and supplies to do a stab wound this time. Blood makeup was European Body Art's "The Blood" alcohol-based stage blood. It kept a bit of glossiness even after drying to it looked perpetually wet and fresh, and while it did have a bit of stickiness to it, it wasn't too extreme. All this was only maybe 1&1/2 tablespoons of the stuff, and my forearms were covered up to the elbows. Stayed on til I washed it off w rubbing alcohol at home, and didn't smudge or transfer to other surfaces once it dried.
but it will never be the one my sister got for me, the one I spent Christmas Day evening merrily cleaning with silver polish while we all watched Wild, Wild West and drank mulled cider
I will come by another antique dresser
but it will never be the one I bought after a breakup, that my friend Eric helped me assemble in my room before we sat on the floor downstairs to eat the thank-you pizza I bought, with his partner and metamour
I will make another Lucille Sharpe cosplay outfit, another Regency ball gown
but it will never be the cosplay I was wearing at Arisia 2023 when a woman asked to take a picture of me and told me that I'd embodied her favorite character perfectly. the ball gown I remade from my first-ever sewing project, and felt so proud to see six years of progress through
there will be new things and new memories attached to them. I'm just mourning the ones that were lost
