“Hey, Luca,” he said, a smile gracing his lips. “Did you get my texts?���

There was no reply from the other boy.

“Luc?”

A little sob crackled through the line, followed by a sharp intake of breath. Jens’ eyebrows furrowed and he pressed the phone closer to his ear, concerned.

“Lucas? What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice lined with panic.

“I don’t-” the voice faltered as Lucas let out another upsetting cry. “I can’t- I can’t breathe.”

Jens’ feet acted before his mind fully comprehended the sentence, hastily guiding him down the sidewalk on autopilot. “You’re okay, I’m right here. Are you still at your apartment?”

Lucas made a choked sound of confirmation, followed by more heartbreaking sobs. “Need- I need you. Please.”

Robbe knew his best friend. He could see when he was sad, sense when he was angry, feel when he was happy. It was a skill he prided himself on. So when Lucas came along, Robbe could tell that Jens was in love.

He saw the looks Jens gave the new boy from across the courtyard, full of awe and yearning, but every time Jens turned back to their lunch table, Robbe pretended he didn’t notice.

Robbe also knew how scary it was to recognize that what you felt was love. So he didn’t tease, or laugh, or judge.

He knew it was what Jens needed.

Epilogue: 2.5 years later

Fic Summary: Rival French Horn players, Robbe and Sander, meet when they are in high school and immediately dislike one another; however, at a summer music camp they learn that they don’t have to like one another to take advantage of the spark that ignites whenever they’re alone. Cue a years-long clandestine, secret…something. Can they call themselves fuck buddies if they’re not actually friends?

How do these two rival musicians weather their non-relationship as their lives interweave and change, as they make choices that take them far from one another? Is it only convenient, or is it something more?

the trees are filled with memories of the feelings never told

“Hey,” Robbe said, and the other boys at the table quieted down, their curiosity now also prioritizing the lone Jens sliding into the picnic table. “Where’s Lucas?”

“Sleeping,” Jens answered shortly, settling down on the bench and lifting his head to look at his friends.

“Holy shit!” “Woah!” Moyo and Aaron shouted concurrently, making multiple overtired teenagers turn to glare. Robbe ignored them, grabbing Jens’ face with one hand and turning it toward him to get a better look. “What the hell happened?”

A mix of purple and black encircled Jens’ left eye, traveling up and disappearing under a band-aid adhered to his temple. The skin directly below his eye was swollen and glossy from what Robbe guessed was some type of ointment. Another small bandage was plastered over the bridge of his nose, a dot of red bleeding through and standing out on the tan material.

“Nothing,” Jens declared, jerking out of Robbe’s hold. “Just drop it.”

Or, When Jens and Lucas gain mysterious injuries neither of them will openly talk about, Robbe is reminded of his and Sander’s attack and is concerned for his friends.

During the first year or so of college, after a long, joyful, irresponsible, hot gap year, Lucas and Kes started to have the first moment of distance between them. And that does not say a lot because they were basically glued to each other until this point so that distance was even mockable to any other human that didn't have a relationship like they had.

But it was noticeable to them, obviously, and to the ones closer to them. Everyone knew it was a phase because Lucas and Kes belong together, everyone says, but it felt very weird to see them not as close as they used to be. And it wasn’t big fights or things that could change their relationship forever either. But by going to different courses in college, they met new people, different mindset, some that connected them to these new people in areas that Kes and Lucas didn’t connect.

So, there were long months of small, frustrating arguments because they had different points of views about important, general society matters. They obviously had different mindsets before, especially about their relationship but anything else, they would just push aside because it didn’t matter more than they did.

And in this first year of college, it started to matter. Lucas became a tiny bit more extrovert, he went on a few different trips around Europe with some college people and Kes became even more extrovert, but also more introverted if that makes any sense.

Kes was always like that, though. He can easily be social and the center of attention when out and about, meeting new people, drinking, and smoking at some random house party. He was just more closed off when it became about Lucas and what their relationship was, the fine line between the best of friends and passionate lovers. It was a very private relationship and he liked it that way because in his mind, it was a selfish way to keep their bubble intact from the outside world and its opinions. And this new introverted version is not so private about…well, being private. Kes very much enjoys his free time alone, most of the time, thinking about where Lucas is now, or painting while high as a fucking kite.

As months slipped by, the long arguments became less occurring again, and they slowly slipped back into the position they always had in each other´s lives. They didn’t live as close as they did when they were kids or teenagers, but they found the time to glue themselves back together. It took another handful of months for the first kiss after that weird phase. They were almost drunk, just got back to Kes’ place after a summer night out and Lucas went to take a shower first and crawled into bed completely naked and not ashamed of it.

Kes was a little shocked, but he was sweaty and a little too drunk – he wanted to enjoy that night like they used to do, and he wanted to be a little more sober to remember it with details in the future – so he forced himself out of bed for a quick cold shower too. Lucas is way too proud to give in to their drunk-young-adults hormones so Kes knew nothing would happen tonight, so he took his time in the shower. He wasn't obnoxiously loud but he was aware of the slight open bathroom door, and he was aware that his ears were ringing and that he wasn't hearing himself properly because of it. Maybe Lucas fell asleep, the bed did feel extremely comfortable after a night walking up and down the city drinking every possible beer they could afford.

Kes brushed his teeth and opened the door completely, hoping it wouldn't creek too loudly. Lucas opened his bright blue eyes and smiled, still a little drunk.

“Took you long enough.” He whispered, his voice was a lot lower after so many hours talking, not drinking a single glass of water. He turned his back to Kes, getting comfortable in that one position he’s always slept in since they were kids: facing the cold wall, one hand in between his cheek and the pillow, the other holding the sheet against his chest, waiting for Kes to hug him so they can go to bed already.

But Kes was still buzzing – just a tiny bit – and he missed Lucas. So he put on some underwear and finally got comfortable in bed, holding the sheet to get as close as possible to Lucas still very slim, and naked, body, putting his arm around Lucas’ waist, just lifting his own torso a little bit, kissing Lucas’ neck and ear until he finally moved a little and kissed Kes on the mouth after what felt like an eternity of lives without that touch.
