Francisco Pacheco del Rio (1564-1644) was a Spanish painter and writer. Born in 1564 in the beautiful city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain, he was the son of Juan Pérez and Leonor del Rio. He grew up in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain where his family worked as sea farmers. After his parents passed away, he was forced to go to Sevilla with his uncle, Francisco Pacheco, who assumed care of him and his siblings and held a prestigious position as a canon in the cathedral church. He took on his uncle's last name and started studying under Sevillian painter Luis Fernández. He started his own teaching workshop after completing his studies. He instructed Diego Velazquez at that school, who later married one of his daughters.

As an artist, Francisco Pacheco del Rio was greatly influenced. His mentors had a big impact on the choices he made about his painting style. He admired and took inspiration from the following artists: the Andalusian Mannerist painters Luis de Vargas and Pedro de Campa, the Belgian portraitist Lucas de Heere, who gave him advice on the art of drawing. After completing his training as an independent painter, he traveled to Europe like other artists at the time. His journey around Europe had a profound effect on his creative output and growth as an artist.

Once his trip through Europe was over, Pacheco returned to Seville, where he would develop most of his career. In 1592, he received his first major commission, three religious paintings for the Jesuits of Marchena. After his first major commission he painted the altarpiece that included the paintings of Santa Catalina (1608), Santa Inés (1608) and San Juan Bautista (1608), which are now exhibited in the Prado Museum. His art is mainly focused on religion as seen in most of his popular art pieces one of them being: the Last Judgment (1614) where he portrays his interpretation of the christian belief the last judgement. 

The fact that Diego Velazquez is more frequently mentioned than Francisco Pacheco del Rio made my research into him interesting. I was therefore really shocked to learn that Diego Velazquez was not only his son-in-law but also that he had taught him at the school he created. The fact that he capitalized on his uncle status by changing his name to his after his uncle passed away and reaping the perks struck me as another incredibly intriguing aspect. One of these benefits is having access to his uncle's social circle and reputation.

My favorite artwork from Francisco Pacheco del Rio is “San Joaquin y Santa Ana”.  Pacheco was interested in religious symbolism, therefore creating this Spanish painting of the Golden Age, which gave him a lot of recognition in Seville along with his other works. It is unknown when the painting was completed, but it is believed to be around 1617–1620. The medium is oil on canvas. This artifice is a representation of San Joaquin and his wife Santa Ana, the Virgin Mary's parents, who, before she was born, were in desperate need to have a child. The art piece shows San Joaquin and Santa Ana kneeling and looking up at the ski. I feel that this painting is a symbol of Maria's parents praying for a child of their own despite their age. While praying, her parents made a promise to the Lord that if he gave them a descendant, they would devote him or her to his service.
