HONOLULU | US soldier pleads guilty to trying to help Islamic State

HONOLULU | US soldier pleads guilty to trying to help Islamic State
HONOLULU — A soldier based in Hawaii pleaded guilty Wednesday to trying to help the Islamic State group— admitting he provided secret military information, a drone meant to track U.S. troops and other support to undercover agents he believed were members of the terrorist organization.
Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang, 35, handcuffed and wearing a beige prison jumpsuit, spoke in a clear voice when he told a U.S. magistrate judge he’s guilty of all four counts against him.
“Your honor, I provided unclassified, classified documents to the Islamic State,” Kang said, adding that he also provided the drone.
He agreed when Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson described other support he provided to undercover agents Kang believed were part of the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS.
By at least early 2016, Kang became sympathetic to the group, Sorenson said. The FBI gathered information from sources he knew, worked with or lived with when it began an investigation in August 2016, Sorenson said.
Kang provided voluminous, digital documents that included sensitive information including the U.S. military’s weapons file, details about a sensitive mobile airspace management system, various military manuals and documents containing personal information about U.S. service members, Sorenson said.
Trained as an air traffic controller with a secret security clearance, Kang also provided documents including call signs, mission procedures and radio frequencies, “all of which would have been helpful to ISIS,” Sorenson said.
At one of the meetings with agents Kang believed were part of the Islamic State, he swore loyalty to the group in Arabic and English and kissed an Islamic State flag given to him by a purported ISIS sheikh, Sorenson said.
He then said he wanted to get his rifle and fight — “just go to downtown Honolulu and Waikiki strip and start shooting,” prosecutors said in a news release announcing the plea. After that, FBI agents arrested him.
“He was clearly enticed. But the law of entrapment is quite complex and often very difficult for the defense to prove,” Kang’s defense attorney, Birney Bervar, said after the hearing.
In exchange for Kang’s guilty plea, prosecutors said they won’t charge him with additional crimes, including violations of the espionage act, other terrorism-related laws and federal firearms statutes.
Kang swore to defend the United States as a member of the military, but he betrayed his country, Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said.
He was also trained as an Army combat instructor and recorded training videos he intended for Islamic State group members in the Middle East to use, Sorenson said.
A confidential informant told agents Kang was obsessed with videos depicting terrorism beheadings, suicide bombings and other violence, and he watched them in his bedroom for hours daily.
Kang told the informant that if he became an Islamic State member, he would be a suicide bomber and attack Schofield Barracks, a sprawling Army base outside Honolulu, according to an affidavit filed in the case.
Kang watched the videos for four to five hours each weekday and more on the weekends, the informant told agents in 2016. The informant “remembered feeling sick to his stomach, while Kang laughed and insulted the victims,” the affidavit said.
Kang began researching Islam in 2014, couldn’t wait to move to the Middle East to “join the cause” and was “only in the military for a paycheck,” the informant said.
The U.S. government asked a judge to allow a tracking device to be placed on Kang’s car in October 2016 and received several extensions. Agents said in their applications for a tracking device that they needed to monitor him continuously because they feared he would carry out an attack.
Officials with the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade told the FBI they were concerned about their ability to monitor Kang, noting that he was to return from leave on May 25, 2017 — the same day as a change-of-command ceremony, the affidavit said. Brigade personnel feared the large gathering “represented a target of opportunity for Kang should he want to harm members of the unit.”
Kang is still in the Army, but his duty status is confined, said Lt. Col. Curt Kellogg, with the 25th Infantry Division. Because Kang is in civilian confinement, the Army isn’t paying him, Kellogg said. He has been held without bail since his arrest.
Kang is expected to receive a 25 years in prison as part of a plea agreement when he is sentenced Dec. 10.

Bo Hi Pak perjured himself in front of the Fraser Committee!
http://www.tparents.org/UTS/DoH3/DoH3-4b.pdf
Bo Hi Pak
Truth is my SwordPage 7
I stand here...accused as an agent or spy of a foreign country, accused as a KCIA agent, accused as the running dog of a foreign government. Nothing could be further from the truth. I know I have been none of those things...no substantial evidence of any wrongdoing or any connection to the KCIA has ever been proven in this subcommittee or elsewhere.
http://www.tparents.org/UTS/DoH3/DoH3-4a.pdf
MEMORANDUM ON BEHALF OF THE REV. SUN MYUNG MOON SUBMITTED TO MEMBERS OF THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND THE COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Pages 26-29 (EXCERPTS)
This Memorandum is respectfully submitted to the membership of the Subcommittee on International Organizations (the "Subcommittee") and the Committee on International Relations (the "Committee") by the undersigned counsel for Rev. Sun Myung Moon. We have been advised that the Subcommittee has authorized a subpoena directed to Rev. Moon in connection with the Subcommittee's pending investigation of Korean-American relations, and that it is now considering whether such a subpoena should in fact be issued.
Chairman Fraser has suggested, without disclosing his basis for doing so, the existence of possible links between the KCIA and "persons or organizations affiliated with the Rev. Sun Myung Moon." However, during the recent public hearings conducted by the Subcommittee, the purely speculative nature of any such inference became clear...charges were rebutted by Neil Albert Salonen in his testimony before an executive session of the Subcommittee.
In fact, both Rev. Moon and other members of the Church have made repeated and emphatic statements -- both before the Subcommittee and in other forums -- that the Unification Church has no affiliation, either overt or covert, with the South Korean Government or any agency thereof, and that Rev. Sun Myung Moon is a religious leader who has no association or connection with any governmental agency or body.
Even more importantly, logical analysis supports the proposition that there is no link between the Korean government and the Unification Church.
In light of the speculative nature of the Subcommittee's "evidence"...it is respectfully submitted that before the Subcomittee can legitimately summon Rev. Moon as a witness, it must demonstrate by direct and reliable evidence that an affiliation exists between the Unification Church and the Korean government..."Unevaluated" and speculative testimony and intelligence reports -- especially where demonstrably erroneous in their description of underlying facts simply do not and cannot satisfy the Subcommittee's burden.
Moreover, the religious faith of individual members of the Unification Church will necessarily be affected by compelling their religious leader to testify...
At a minimum, the Subcommittee must first adduce reliable, first-hand information showing that Rev. Moon is an agent of the Korean government. Only on the basis of such information should the Committee permit the subpoena to be served.
DATED: New York, New York May 12, 1978
Respectfully submitted,
Law Offices of Charles A. Stillman

In the late 1950's, Moon's message was favorably received by four young, English-speaking Korean Army officers, all of whom were later to provide important contacts with the post-1961 Korean Government. One was Pak Bo Hi, who had joined the ROK Army in 1950. Han Sang Keuk (aka Bud Han), a follower of Moon's since the late 1950's, became a personal assistant to Kim Jong Pil, the architect of the 1961 coup and founder of the KCIA. Kim Sang In (Steve Kim) retired from the ROK Army in May 1961, joined the KCIA and became an interpreter for Kim Jong Pil]. He continued as a close personal aide to Kim Jong Pil until 1966. At that time, Steve Kim returned to his position as KCIA officer, later to become the KCIA's chief of station in Mexico City. He was a close friend of Pak Bo Hi and a supporter of the UC. The fourth, Han Sang Kil, was a military attache at the ROK Embassy in Washington in the late 1960's. Executive branch reports also linked him to the KCIA. On leaving the service of the ROK Government, Han became Moon's personal secretary and tutor to his children.

A History Of The Unification Church In America, 1959–74 - Emergence of a National Movement
By Michael L. Mickler
Jong Pil Kim. Chairman of the newly emerged Supreme Council for National Reconstruction (SCNR) in Korea, Jong Pil Kim journeyed to the United States in November, 1961, for talks with American leaders and a meeting with President John Kennedy. After the talks, he spent two days in San Francisco before returning to Korea. During his stay in the Bay Area, Miss Kim received a call from a Colonel Han, a church member and one of Jong Pil Kim's aides and interpreters. He had arranged for Miss Kim and five American members not only to attend a reception but also to have an audience with the chairman.
At the reception, members met another aide who had recently joined the church, and in the private audience Miss Kim spoke of her work in America. In addition, each American member gave a brief testimony of their experiences with the church. While the meeting was relatively routine, its significance was enormous for a community which was struggling with obscurity and rejection.

Message of Governor Kyong Whan Pak
On Sunday, July 30, we had a visitor from Korea who is the Governor of Kangwon Province, Kyong Whan Pak. He is the first governor to invite our group to lecture for anti-Communist purposes. He is visiting America at the invitation of the State Department. Mr, Bo Hi Pak invited him to meet with us on Sunday, and he gave the following talk after the service:
"...This is my third trip to the United States. The first trip was made at the same time as Mr. Pak for purposes of study. The second trip, also under military auspices, was in 1959. This time, my third trip, I came at the invitation of the State Department...Before I became governor, 90 percent of my activity was in military life...I have formed a group which is nothing like an organized religious body...I plan to train 3000 rural youth...with a new ideology to counteract the Communist ideology..."
"There are about sixty young people from the Unification Church who are assisting me in the training of the young people...I chose them to assist me in the program...Each month these young people of the Unification Church give an antiCommunist lecture...In order to help them materially, I have issued bus passes to them to use in their travels in the province Kang Won...I would like to express my whole-hearted congratulations for the expansion of the Unification movement abroad, particularly in America...I would also like to extend the invitation to you to visit Korea, particularly my province. I will be most happy to welcome you and show you around."

Sprawling former Toyota headquarters campus in Torrance is up for sale
Looking for an office complex with its own helipads, swimming pool, data center and emergency power?
One just hit the market in Torrance: the longtime North American headquarters of Japanese car manufacturer Toyota, which is consolidating its U.S. operations in Texas.
Toyota announced its plans to leave Torrance for Plano, a suburb of Dallas, in 2014. The departure of about 3,000 workers should be complete by the end of the year, and the company’s sprawling 110-acre campus is now officially up for grabs.
The pending loss of Toyota’s mostly white-collar jobs came as a blow to Torrance three years ago, Mayor Patrick Furey said. Soon, however, came inquiries from other companies interested in taking over the site near the 405 Freeway at Western Avenue.
“For a time, our phone was ringing off the hook” with calls from potential buyers from the U.S. and abroad, Furey said. Among the callers were automotive companies, pharmaceutical corporations and technology firms.
He declined to identify them, but said “most involved lots of jobs and high-paying positions.”
Now that it’s officially on the market, Toyota and city officials hope the campus will be bought by a single owner-occupant, Furey said. But it might land in the hands of a developer interested in giving it a major makeover that could include substantial new construction that would draw multiple businesses as tenants or property owners.
Toyota and its real estate broker JLL won’t say how much they hope to get for the campus with about 2 million square feet of office and industrial space, but history suggests the price could surpass $150 million.
In 2006, Nissan Motor Co. sold its campus near the intersection of the 110 and 405 freeways for more than $75 million. The Nissan operation was also a configuration of offices and light industrial space, but was less than half the size of Toyota’s campus at 42 acres and 700,000 square feet of buildings.
Toyota to move jobs and marketing headquarters from Torrance to Texas
Jerry Hirsch and David Undercoffler
Toyota’s move to suburban Dallas would put management of Toyota’s U.S. business close to where it builds most cars for the American market.

Nissan’s property was purchased by Los Angeles developer Kearny Real Estate Co., which fixed it up and turned it into an office and manufacturing park for multiple businesses. Nissan’s old executive tower, for example, is now the U.S. headquarters of Taiwanese tire distributor Tireco Inc. A former Nissan training facility is home to electronics products manufacturer Qual-Pro Corp.
Kearny, which also turned an 86-acre former Northrop Grumman plant in Hawthorne into a business park, may try to buy the Toyota campus, partner Hoonie Kang said.
“The size of the project is intriguing,” Kang said. “We love these big complicated business projects.”
Demand for unconventional office space has been rising in Los Angeles County for the last few years, spurred by the growth of technology and entertainment firms.
Santa Monica was the first destination of choice for “Silicon Beach” tenants, but the wave of demand moved south and east into Venice, Culver City and Playa Vista. The most recent hot spot is El Segundo, home to nontraditional companies such as online media firm Internet Brands Inc. and MotoArt, which makes functional art out of used aircraft parts.
Torrance appears to be in the path of future growth by creative firms, said Petra Durnin, director of research for CBRE Group.
Toyota set up shop in Torrance in 1967, company spokesman Aaron Fowles said, about a decade after it started U.S. sales in a former Rambler dealership in Hollywood. Toyota stumbled at first, but sales ramped up in the 1960s with the introduction of the Corona and Corolla sedans. The administrative site in Torrance grew too.
Today, the property includes some automobile-specific uses such as hydrogen fueling stations, a car wash and an auto-test facility. But most of it is a self-contained environment set up to support Toyota’s corporate functions such as accounting, finance and communications.
There are 18 buildings on multiple city blocks, a data center, five diesel power generators, two helipads, two dining centers, one cafeteria, a tennis court and a fitness center with a swimming pool. It also has 8,000 parking places.
“It’s a ready-to-go corporate campus,” said property broker Jeff Adkison of JLL, who represents Toyota. “We expect the sale will happen fairly quickly.”
Toyota will employ about 4,000 workers in Plano, including 3,000 positions transferred from Torrance and an additional 1,000 from Kentucky and New York.
About two-thirds to 75% of Toyota’s workers in Torrance are expected to make the move to Texas, Toyota Motor North America President James Lentz has said.

Dear Miss Kim (Young Oon Kim),
Thanks you so much for your letter. In 1960, we tried to locate you in Oregon but later found you had moved to California. As you no doubt realize, activities of the last months have excluded any letter writing--even my close friends (your (her) three dedicated students)Sang, Bo Hi, and Bud. I hope some day we can meet. Mrs. Butterwick joins in sending all good wishes.
