THE TOP FIVE BEST FILIPINO MOVIES OF ALL TIME!

Movies provide entertainment. It also allows you to escape reality. Whether they are scary, funny, tragic, romantic, or somewhere in between, movies have the power to move us like nothing else. There are so many genres with incredible titles to choose from and so much to discover. A movie can also bring people together has always been a way for people who share a common interest in a film to communicate and discuss it. While some are passionate about other genres, there are no judgments because watching a film is like sitting in front of a blank wall. You are free to express yourself however you want as long as it makes you happy.

Filipino films have always held a special place in my heart because they make me feel happy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy films from other countries as well, but nothing beats a local touch. Regardless of the language, I find Filipino films to be very entertaining to watch, as they can teach me valuable life lessons and provide me with a sense of calm amid the world's turmoil.

So, here are my top 5 best Filipino films that anyone can enjoy.

1. Four Sisters and a Wedding

Four Sisters and a Wedding is a 2013 Filipino dramatic comedy film directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and starring some of the industry's most talented actors and actresses. Bea Alonzo, Toni Gonzaga, Shaina Magdayao, Angel Locsin, and Enchong Dee star in the film as the Salazar siblings. The plot revolves around a family of four sisters and one brother. When the youngest of the siblings declares his intention to marry, the sisters concoct a strategy to persuade him otherwise. They wanted their brother to marry another woman, but their youngest sibling was spared from all of their schemes. The deep-seated hatred they have towards each other is exposed as the film progresses. They had a major brawl that left everyone in tears. Finally, they made amends, accepted their differences, and reunited as a family. Their relationship is only strengthened as a result of the major confrontation. This film shows us that family is the most important thing in the world and that despite our flaws, a family's love never fades.

2. Hello, Love, Goodbye

Hello, Love, Goodbye is a film directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina that was released in 2019. Kathryn Bernardo, Alden Richards, and Maymay Entrata appear in this romantic drama. The life of an OFW in Hong Kong is depicted in this film. Joy Fabregas, played by Kathryn Bernardo, wishes to move and work in Canada to improve her and her family's lives. Her working license, however, has expired, and the authorities are on the lookout for her. There's Ethan Del Rosario, played by Alden Richards, a Filipino himself. Despite Joy's plans to relocate to Canada, Ethan is set on pursuing her. Even as their burgeoning relationship develops, they manage to keep their goals in order. Meeting each other teaches them a powerful life lesson that forever changes their lives. This shows us that just because you love someone doesn't mean they have to always be there for you. It's often necessary to set them free for them to mature and become who they are on their own.

 3. Kita Kita (I See You)

Kita Kita, a 2017 Philippine romantic comedy film written and directed by Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo, stars Alessandra de Rossi (Lea) and Empoy Marquez (Tonyo). After seeing her Japanese fiancé's infidelity, Lea, a Filipino tour guide living in Japan, goes blind. After a while, Tonyo, a fellow Filipino and charmer, appears out of nowhere and befriends the visually impaired Lea in the most charming way possible. Even though she didn't want it, he cooked her Filipino meals every day. But she gradually warmed up to him and accepted his offer, as well as being his friend and enjoying his company. They finally fall for each other while they remain together. The most devastating part was when Lea regained her vision and was eager to see Tonyo, but he died before she could even see him. This movie shows us that love has no bounds. True love comes from the heart and is never judgmental. It teaches that no matter what life throws at us, we must keep going forward and use those happy memories as an encouragement to continue developing as people.

4. Seven Sundays

Seven Sundays is a Philippine comedy-drama film directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and starring Aga Muhlach, Ronaldo Valdez, Cristine Reyes, Dingdong Dantes, and Enrique Gil, which was released in 2017. This film appeals to people of all ages because it captures the essence of family values. The film depicts the harsh reality of the prospect of losing a loved one. The father in the film was diagnosed with cancer at the start of the film and has just seven weeks to live. So his children have decided to pay him a visit for the remaining seven Sundays he has left on this world. Throughout the film, it is discovered that the father was simply misdiagnosed, resulting in a major conflict that causes the entire family to break apart. Regardless of the difficulties, they have faced, they eventually come together as a family because true love and acceptance can only come from one's family.

 5. The Hows of Us

The Hows of Us is a romantic drama film directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina that was released in the Philippines in 2018. George is played by Kathryn Bernardo, and Primo is played by Daniel Padilla. A couple who wants to spend the rest of their lives together is depicted in the film. Following the death of George's aunt, the pair resolved to live together, spend their lives in each other's arms, and pursue their goals as a couple. But life moves in unexpected ways. When their feelings become more intense, they have to cope with the challenges of being in a long-term relationship as well as the harsh realities of life. It turns out that they are on opposing paths, leading to the couple's breakup. When George agreed to sell the house a few years later, Primo returned home and attempted to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend. He was adamant about rekindling the flame. So, in the end, they realized that their love for each other had never faded over the years. The problem that occurred years back was just a combination of life struggles and miscommunication. They finally reconciled and embarked on a new life together. This film shows us that true love triumphs in the face of adversity. It teaches us that all can be resolved if we all listen to what our hearts are trying to tell us.

CONCLUSION

Filipino films have made a name for themselves in the film industry in all genres. The Philippines' special touch has resulted in excellent films that anyone can relate to and enjoy. My top five Filipino films of all time are Seven Sundays, Hello, Love, Goodbye, Four Sisters and a Wedding, The Hows of Us, and Kita Kita. These films will make you fall in love while also inspiring you. I hope that my list helps you experience a good quality Filipino film that the Philippines has to offer!

Venture to BTS Concert 1

Are you ARMY?  Dying for BTS Concert

Yes, I did go to BTS World Tour, Love Yourself in HK.   This is my venture story to THE Concert.

  In TV news, YouTube, and Facebook, I was getting the name of BTS very often and they got my attention.   Became curious about this K-pop band, who turned out to be the most successful ever in the history of Korean pop music.    

Yes, they are the biggest boy band in the world.   They even did the speech at the U.N.  Quite impressive.  

During after-work Zumba class, the instructor was even experimenting one of BTS songs.  Definitely, first time to listen to that song.    Totally Unzumbable!!!  But we managed, somehow.

As they were getting popular and became such a world phenomenon (even cover of TIME), I wanted to join this trend.

I became a fan when they released the song IDOL, I know, a late bloomer.  Especially I liked the funny intro part with quite interesting sound and rhythm, which gave you a curiosity and much expectation what to follow next in the song.  

Loved a remixed version featuring American-Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj and its music video.  Her collaboration helped a bit to expand their fan coverage from just teenagers, hopefully.

Going to  a live concert of popular singers/bands are quite rare experience that ordinary people including myself could not afford.  Not just the money, you need to plan ahead and invest quite a time for the event.

It was February 2019 around my birthday.   I decided to treat myself with BTS concert experiences as a birthday gift.   I heard that their tickets would sold-out within 10 min. (?) timeframe.  But without giving up hope, I googled ‘BTS Tour Tickets’.  With my surprise, it did show several options of ticket purchase for their upcoming Hong Kong and Bangkok Love Yourself Tours in March and April 2019.    

Later, I figured out those ticket selling companies were buying chunk of tickets using their some kind of mega macro programs when ticket selling started.  No wonder you were never able to buy tickets using your iPhone or MacBook as it was technically impossible to beat their super computers.   

Later, they sold to miserable but eager fans by batches.  Of course, the price would be a total rip-off.   No choice,  I had to join this late comer club.     I had to decide between Hong Kong and Bangkok.    I visited two cities several times from business trips but have never been to Asia World-Expo Arena or Rajamangala National Stadium. 

 I didn’t want to get lost or have a problem of coming back to the hotel.   So, started to search the hotels near around.   

As a lone traveler, I needed to find a decent one, hopefully within walking distance as a commute back to hotel at night would be a nightmare especially considering heavy traffic in Bangkok.   

Thank god, there was Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel, which was directly connected to Asia World-Expo Arena.

As the location was confirmed, it’s time to decide the date and buy the ticket.  As this would be the first and last (?) chance to go for a live concert, I wanted to get a good seat with a decent view of the stage performers.   I went for the best again over-priced seat closest to the stage.  

I had to decide between Saturday or Sunday depending on the hotel availability.  Finally, Sunday, March 24 was chosen.  It was one of front seats, just next to the right wing of main stage.    

The ticket company even charged additional US$100 for administrative processing  along with ticket price itself with kind notes of “to ensure your ticket is purchased”. What does that mean?  You pay extra “just to MAKE SURE”??  You couldn’t believe how over-priced it was.  

I had to calm down and talked to myself ‘this is your birthday gift’ when I did the final payment.

To make it things worse, the SkyCity Marriott turned out to be very pricy.   Furthermore, I didn’t want to take a leave for this but no choice I had to book one night of Sunday as Sunday was bit cheaper than Saturday.   Still this booking became the most expensive ever one-night lodging in my life.  

I had to skip a routine Monday business meeting by applying one day annual leave with remarks of “important personal matter.”   

 It’s time for air-ticket.  I had to compensate the over-the-budget ticket and hotel.    Managed to find the budget airline of Air Asia round tickets, Sunday morning 6am and Monday morning 9am.   Couldn’t sleep that much on Saturday night from the excitement of this venture, like an elementary school girl waiting for a school picnic.   

Had to wake up at 3am to be on time for departure flight.  After I arrived in Hong Kong airport,  tried to find a free hotel shuttle bus.    After spending so much, if I could save some money, why not?    

There was a warning of typhoon that week.  It was quite windy and chilly.  Had to wait for this free bus for more than 45 min. in the middle of nowhere quite far from main building of the airport.   Renovation construction was on-going everywhere in Hong Kong Airport.  

Became miserable and felt stupid while waiting, especially with thin jacket and sleepy eyes, accompanied by strong wind.  Hotel was quite near.   What a ‘penny wise, pound  foolish’

I saw a couple (mother and daughter) waiting for same shuttle.    I figured that they had the same goal of mine.   A daughter was carrying a backpack with  BT21 Chimmy plush doll hanging from the zipper.  

Hmm,   I would see them at tonight’s concert.

Finally, a shuttle bus arrived.

OldManMalekith: Hi Lynn! How did working with JT on Use Me differ from your previous experiences with producers? Everyone that I've seen or heard work with him puts it as a really positive experience, and he helps make great stuff! pvrisofficial: He is the BEST. He was very similar to Blake in the sense that he was incredibly nurturing and encouraging, dedicated to making sure it was 100% everything I wanted and always stood up for me if the label ever tried to change it. His production style is definitely different but its extremely diverse. It's a lot punchier and crisper and a bit more minimal than in the past but i think it almost makes things more impactful that way!

A big thing was anxiety which caused me to choke up a lot and tense my chords. Then when i was being coached, out of fear of damaging something we had to rebuild and start small and light which we think caused the chords/muscles to atrophy, which set it back further haha. I eventually went to another coach who then was able to take my "retrained" voice and then strengthen it up and rebuild it back to where it was before!

CHAPTER 7:

You do manage to arrive in Dubai at night time, and it looks every bit as breath-taking as you expected.

After landing, the door is popped open by the hostess and a man walks in with a clipboard, wearing a S.H.I.E.L.D windbreaker. You see to your surprise that it’s a familiar face. ‘Fury!’ you exclaim.

He nods at you and takes a seat. ‘Right, they’re all based in International City, which is quite a drive from here’.

‘International City?’ Clint asks. ‘Yeah, they have sectors of houses and shops within it, all built to represent different countries of the world’ you provide.

‘Looks like you got yourself a tour guide, then’ Nick points at you with his clipboard. ‘You are tourists, nothing more. You’re staying at the Premiere Inn. It’s not fancy, doesn’t have to be. It has to be close to where they are. They’re expecting visitors from London tonight, and meeting at a club in the middle of Dubai, but there will be no arms exchanges there. However, to be sure, I will be there with my team. The rest of you will be stationed in disguise in and around the China cluster, where we are expecting it to go down. Don’t go heavy on the equipment, take what’s quick, light and effective. These things happen in public there, so let’s keep casualties to a minimum’ he stands up, ‘you’ll be taking a tour bus to the hotel, I suggest you all change out of your gear, and then get your stuff in the bus. You’ll hear more from Stark later’ he salutes the group and leaves the flight.

The group, everyone except for Nat, Clint, and Thor, are in awe.

‘He is SO COOL’ one of the agents exclaim. ‘I know; he just saunters in with all that swagger…’ another agent gushes. ‘Alright then’ Clint says, rolling his eyes. ‘Change, let’s move’.

You’ve laid out all the weapons you got for the mission out on your bed. A proper arsenal. Nat’s bed looks the same, knives, tazers, blasters, guns and various other things strewn across her bed.

‘Okay, when we say light… how light are we talking?’ ‘Anything we can conceal under a dress or a jacket’. ‘So these are out’ you sigh, throwing your katanas to the back of the bed, disappointed. ‘We're fighting men, not alien monsters, you can't use those' she says, chuckling.  'Let me dream, Nat'. You pick up another weapon. ‘If I wear a trench coat, I can take the Chitauri M4’. ‘I don’t know how people perceive trench coats here, but I give you my blessing’.

She grabs a small silver and blue handgun, which you recognise as being another Chitauri weapon that blasts an incapacitating screech in the direction it is pointed, rendering the victim completely helpless.

You decide on a C M4, a few knives concealed in your jeans and socks, your trusty Vibranium gloves, and two guns that Stark made which never run out of bullets.

Then you wait.

Dubai sure is glamorous, but the spot you’ve all been assigned sure isn’t.

Of course, arms dealers aren’t trying to bring attention to themselves either.

You’ve stationed the ten people under you to various spots around the area, and are sitting in an outdoor coffee shop with Sam, overlooking where the exchange is expected to happen.

‘Got eyes on the entrance?’ Nat asks over the comm. ‘Yeah. I got a guy at the entrance pretending to wait for an Uber’. ‘Copy that. Nick said they’re on their way here, so any second now’.

You lean back in your chair and take a sip of your coffee.

‘How do you know so much about this place?’ Sam asks. ‘I used to live here’ you say. ‘Spent about five years here with my family before moving to New York three years ago’. ‘How was it?’ ‘Amazing’ you smile. ‘Gets hot as hell, but the winters are fantastic. And it’s so safe’. ‘Are you forgetting why we’re here’ he motions to the building across the street. ‘Well, I mean it’s one of those cities where women can stay alone and no harm comes to her. You can walk the streets alone at night and people don’t approach you. You can leave your laptop out in a coffee shop to visit the bathroom, and no one touches your shit’.

Sam looks sceptical.

‘You telling me no one even messes with your shit?’ ‘Yup’. ‘Are people just honest or do they assume they have more money than you anyway?’ ‘Wow, probably the latter’ you laugh. ‘Heads up, we got incoming’ you hear Clint on the comms. ‘Hey, where’s Thor?’ you ask. ‘You mean Dr. Donald Blake?’ Sam points at a guy in glasses across the street, leaning on his umbrella.

‘Pulling up at my 9 o’clock’ the guy you stationed to “wait for an Uber” says.

Three black Nissan Patrol Platinums pull up to the entrance.

‘When we moving in?’ Sam asks, ‘We can’t see past those cars’. ‘I do not have eyes on them. Clint?’ Nat says. ‘I see them' Clint replies, 'move on my signal’.

You set your coffee down and position yourself to stand up any second.

The cars drive away, and you see a group of men, dressed quite casually, cross the street and head to the coffee shop where you’re sitting.

‘Hold it’ Clint says.

They sit down and order some coffees. And you notice the other patrons of the coffee shop get up and leave as soon as they order their coffees.

‘Okay… what’s happening’ Thor says. ‘Obviously these guys know something we don’t’ you say. ‘The whole street has cleared’ Nat observes. ‘So it’s just us and them? Yeah, not suspicious at all’ Sam cracks. ‘Let’s move in now’. ‘I don’t see any weapons. We aren’t moving till we see arms’ Nat says.

Sam leans back in his chair, but you keep your position.

‘They may not take out any if they see us’ you point out.  ‘They know of four people watching them’.

You take a deep breath and stand up. ‘Send a black sedan for the agent across the street in five seconds. Thor, move out’. Sam stands up with you and you walk down the street.

You’ve left a microphone at the table where you were sitting, which is able to pick up audio from the next table.

They have a discussion in a foreign language.

‘He just asked him to check the surrounding buildings’ Nat says. ‘Are you in there?’ you ask. ‘You know you can't ask me that’.

You sigh and lean against the wall, waiting. 

After ten minutes of complete silence, Nat’s voice comes on the comms. ‘I see the weapons, we’re moving in. Two of you, move in from the east’.

‘Copy that’ you remove the C M4 you’ve been hiding under the coat and grin. ‘Finally, baby’. ‘You know; the love you have for weapons that tear people apart kinda turns me on’ Sam says. ‘I bet it does’ you wink. ‘Let’s go’.

Oh, do bad guys never learn.

You take a look of the aftermath of the fight and laugh to yourself. You strap the C M4 back in and cover it with your coat. Stark foundation is already on the scene cleaning up the mess, and the cops have arrived to arrest the dealers. No casualties since the street was clear... well, except for the arms dealers themselves. 

After some negotiating between Fury and the cops, Fury manages to get full custody of the weapons to ship back to New York. Nat walks up to you. ‘Are you sure you don’t need to see a therapist?’

‘What’ ‘You were enjoying yourself a bit too much’ she points out. ‘Damn, there’s nothing wrong with that’ Sam defends you. ‘I’m fine, I just like a good fight, is that bad?’ ‘I guess not’ she looks at you up and down again, then walks back. ‘Anyone injured?’ you call out.

You get No’s as a response and officially call the mission a complete success.

‘Can we not stay for a day?’ you ask Fury, on the way back to the hotel. 'We're ahead of schedule'.  ‘I would say yes, but Stark is impatient to open up his new toys, and says he promised you and Romanoff a crack at it first’. ‘Right…’ suddenly you no longer care about staying a day. ‘We’re cleaning up faster than expected’ Fury says. ‘Usually we just watch for about two days and then move in, but I got here first so this one went quick. You’re on your own in Hong Kong’. ‘Thanks Fury’ you smile at him. ‘For all your help’. ‘No problem. I’ll see you around’ he lets you off at the hotel. The rest get down and head to their rooms. ‘At least we spend the night in beds that aren’t flying’ Maria says.

Everyone agrees as they enter, say their goodnights, and retire for the night.

The operations in Hong Kong, as promised by Fury, takes longer.

Nat, Clint and a few other agents were doing surveillance while you stayed in the stakeout van reading your papers for two days. No reason you can’t get ahead with the stones while you wait.

You hoped to have a breakthrough while sitting in that stuffy van with four other agents. None. You couldn’t even contact Stark to see how far he had gotten, but you suspected that it already took a lot of his energy not to pop open the crates with the weapons and go nuts, so maybe he hasn’t actually done anything about the stones.

Day 3 in Hong Kong, Day 5 of the mission: Nat enters your van.

‘They’ve already made the sale, so we have to split up’. ‘Can we do that?’ you put your papers aside. ‘Won’t we fall short?’ ‘We don’t have time to strike them separately, they can easily alert each other. It has to be tonight, and we have to split up’.

You nod, understanding.

‘I’ll go with Clint and Hill and 10 agents, Sam and you can lead the other 10. I’ll get the dealers, you get the clients’. ‘Who gets Thor?’ ‘Um…’

You can’t split Thor. And both of you need Thor, in case there is some sort of alien tech humans can’t touch.

‘You can take Thor’ you offer. ‘No, that’s fine, you take him, and we’ll wait for him to clean up with you and come to us’. ‘That’ll take too long, I have my Vibranium gloves, I’ll handle our clean-up’. ‘We don’t know if Vibranium can withstand the…’ ‘Why don’t we toss for it?’ you take out a coin. ‘Heads, you get Thor, tails, I don’t get Thor’. ‘Do you think I’m stupid’.

You grin. ‘Seriously take Thor. If it turns out I can’t use the gloves, I’ll hold the fort down till Thor comes to us’.

‘Fine’ she gives you a small salute and proceeds to leave. ‘My crew will move out in fifteen to their base, you stay here. The clients are right in this hotel…’ she points outside. ‘We strike at the exact same time’.

‘We’re in position, where you at?’ Clint asks over the comms. ‘Um. Yeah, we can't move in right now’. you say. ‘What? Why?’ ‘Oh I don’t know, maybe because there’s a wedding happening!’ you roll your eyes. ‘There’s too many people in there’. ‘Do you see the clients?’ Nat asks. ‘Coffee shop. They’ve left the bags behind the counter though’.

Nat lets out an irritated sigh. ‘The dealers will move out any minute, we don’t have time to lose’. ‘Well, I can’t move in with a troop of 10 men with guns while there’s a wedding happening’ you say. ‘No worries’ Sam says. ‘I got ya’ll’ he winks at you. ‘I can practically hear Sam wink’ Nat says. ‘What is it’.

Sam removes a cylindrical object from his pocket, similar to the dealer boss in Queens.

‘You took the force field activator!’ you exclaim. ‘Sam…’ Clint warns. ‘We’re gonna discuss this later’ Nat says. ‘We’re moving in right now’.

 You wave your hand and let your crew out of the van. Your agents move out from the other surveillance vans and all enter the lobby in formation.

The clients have taken notice of the group move into the coffee shop, and they all stand up, cocking their guns.

Sam moves in before you, holding the force field activator behind his back. ‘Don’t make this difficult man’ he says.

‘I think it’s going to be difficult for you’ one of them say. ‘There’s a wedding happening in the hall across from this coffee shop, you wouldn’t want those many casualties, would you?’

In response, Sam smashes the activator on the ground, pushing a shield around the agents and the clients. One of the clients shoot, and Sam ducks, causing the bullet to ricochet off the shield and bounce back to hit the guy who shot it.

‘Smart move, jackass’ Sam laughs.

The clients charge, one of them yelling for someone to secure the bag with the weapons, but you’re already behind the counter.

‘Hi!’ you tell the man who tries to grab the bag, and hit his nose with the butt of your gun. He falls back, his nose bleeding.

‘Oh damn, I’m sorry, I know how much that sucks, I had a chronic nose bleed problem as a child’ you quip, dragging him behind the counter by his right leg. He kicks you in the stomach, screaming. 'But I wasn’t a little bitch about it’ you aim your gun at his head. He stops and glares at you. ‘Good boy, I’m gonna tie you up now’.

‘A little help?’ Sam yells, holding off two goons.

You stand up after having tied the guy and throw two silver balls at their torsos.

They scream and drop to the ground, sparks all over their body. ‘Oh shit no!!' you exclaim, 'I had something better, okay, next time you need a hand, call me’.

Sam gives you a thumbs up without even questioning it and runs off to help the other agents.

‘Listen, I’m gonna go help my friends’ you tell the guy tied and gagged behind the counter. ‘If you cooperate, I’ll put in a good word for… oh wait, you’re a terrible person. Never mind’ you jump over the counter, and in one swift motion, push yourself off with your hands and drop kick a goon.

‘Oy! Get this asshole’ Sam yells, motioning to a guy he’s holding by the throat. ‘You have the situation under control’ ‘Yes, but I wanna see what you got’

You grin and take out a little metallic disc from your pocket. ‘Drop him’ you say. Sam obliges.

You throw the disk at the man, and as soon as it touches him, a cage forms around his torso, extending to his arms, forcing them behind him. The metal extends to around his legs, forcing him to kneel on the floor, and finally, a slab of metal clangs around his mouth so he can’t talk.

‘DAMN what the hell is that’ Sam clearly looks impressed. ‘Little gift from Strange. He used it on Kaecilius’ you grin. ‘It used to be bigger, Stark made the whole cage sit in a tiny disc’. ‘I don’t know who the Kae dude is, but that’s dope as hell, I want one’.

Another mission wrapped up, and two days before the expected date!

The flight back is relatively chill. You were expecting celebrations and drinks and singing, looking forward to it almost, but this vibe is not bad either. There’s some soft lounge music playing in the background while everyone reads, writes, is in conversation, or just looking out the window. You, as usual, sit across from Nat, who is trying to sleep before landing in New York in the morning. You can’t seem to fall asleep though, so you decide to sit with some research papers.

An hour in, and you realise your heart’s not in it, in fact you’re even a little sick of it. You take out your TV from the armrest and watch an older episode of Doctor Who, almost missing Loki sitting next to you asking questions. You had gotten into the habit of giving his palms a little massage while engrossed in the show, so you start massaging your own as you watch the shenanigans of the Doctor unfold. 

Five more hours before you land in New York. You put the TV away and look around for anyone awake to talk to. Everyone is tired out and asleep, so you pull your blanket up to your chin and try to sleep too.

1. When will events return? No one knows but we are learning more:

Dr. Zeke Emmamuel says he doesn’t see large scale events coming back until the fall of 2021.

Shane Harmon, CEO of Sky Stadium in New Zealand shared some interesting information from his government on when restrictions might start to be loosened and things can begin to normalize a little. Patron Base also put together a nice resource guide for their customers that y’all may find useful.

In Europe, the UK is preparing for 3 additional weeks of stay-at-home orders, pushing the opening of events back a bit further.

In the US, we still have no clear strategy for what reopening will look like, what we should expect, and how we will start to regain any sense of normalcy.

We do have a reopening panel and we do have a desire to reopen events, but, again, unfortunately, no clear direction.

I think we all have to try and take a balanced approach to our expectations here. First, we have the economic factor and that’s impacting all of us here immensely. Second, we have to deal with the safety concerns of the population and recognize that liability will drive a lot of the decision making process. Finally, never lose sight of the impact of fear and emotionally driven decision making on mass society. As quickly as people are gung ho to get back to ballparks, if an outbreak happens that was accelerated by a ballgame and that link is made, that could do more long-term damage than anything that has happened to this point.

Because, unfortunately, none of us really know the right answer here.

But I am hopeful after seeing the PGA Tour aim for June and the Australian Football League talking about July. 

2. The economic impact of these shutdowns becomes more and more apparent:

Baseball America wrote up a piece on why fan free games aren’t going to make sense for MiLB and what not playing in 2020 would mean for minor league baseball going forward.

The economic challenges are going to be felt all over. Colleges are likely going to be put in a position to cut sports like the University of Cincinnati did with soccer this week.

As a holistic thing, Research and Markets put together a report this week that tries and cover everything about the entertainment industry and the impact of the virus on folks.

Like a lot of stuff, the analysis and the information coming out from reputable sources needs to be parsed with for context and when you see anyone tell you something is all or nothing…take that with a grain of salt.

Bill Sutton tweeted out a call for teams to get on the virtual season tickets now and over the years I’ve been calling for folks to think more seriously about their membership model, their email lists, and how they are developing their global fan bases.

Harry DeMott from Ticket Evolution wrote up a good piece on restoring liquidity to the ticketing ecosystem as I was finishing this up that is worth a read.

Whatever position you find yourself in right now, your strategy going forward is going to be more important than ever. And, if doing things the way we’ve always done things is a bad idea in the best of times, right now it is a really bad idea to settle for that answer.

3. StubHub, refunds, cancellations, and more continue to make the news: 

The regulators in the UK continue to look into the merger between Viagogo and StubHub. And, as was mentioned in the press this week, “worst timed acquisition ever“?

Vivid Seats did announce their refund and exchange policy this week and it looks a lot different than Ticketmaster’s or StubHub’s.

AEG is offering a 30-day window for fans to get refunds and once a new date is announced, fans will get another 30 days.

While many of us have focused a lot of our attention on the platforms and technology companies, the same uncertainty is trickling into other areas with college football programs feeling the pinch because of the compromised place they find themselves.

Let’s be real here, college programs are only feeling the pinch now because most of them had the earliest deadlines…at a certain point, this is going to be a refrain that all of us are going to hear. Again, it goes back to the point above…we need clarity, information, and guidance on what the next several months look like before folks are really going to feel comfortable doing much of the stuff that we consider normal.

Leadership 101 stuff.

4. How are you connecting with your fans and customers during the pandemic?

Over the last few weeks, I’ve highlighted some really cool examples of using assets, content, and ideas to connect with folks.

The link above is from my friend, Blair Hughes, down in Brisbane. He’s been focusing on fan engagement since 2013 and he updated his resource guides this week to include a few new ideas that will work even when you are socially distanced from your fans.

The Indianapolis Indians were lauded by the governor. The Red Sox dropped coloring sheets. There are tons of free videos and performances from organizations all over the world. 

I’ve struggled with this a little bit because what do you offer folks when there is so much uncertainty. My path has been to continue to figure out how to add value and share ideas with folks. (To be fair, it is selfish as well because focusing on others helps me overcome the gaping void of being an entirely inadequate 4th-grade teacher and helps keep some of those negative thought processes at bay.)

But what are you doing to connect with folks now? Let me know and I can try and highlight some of these ideas as well.

5. The ticketing industry is doing a lot of stuff to help everyone weather this crisis together: 

This week INTIX announced a relief fund, the INTIX Member Covid-19 Relief Fund. 100% of funds will go to member assistance to help members of the ticket community bridge the economic gap while we wait out the pandemic.

Any gift matters, even $1.

As Maureen says that all folks want to do is help and I agree. So if you can, support this effort.

On top of the relief fund, Maureen and her team are hosting a weekly Zoom call on Wednesdays at 12 PM EDT. Anyone can join, no matter if you are a member or not. This week’s had over 200 folks.

The ALSD has a list of resources and ways for folks to learn and connect during the pandemic.

Global Citizen has put together the Live Aid of the Covid-19 crisis for tomorrow, 18 April.

Crew Nation is Live Nation’s effort to help the crews that make the shows happen. The Arts Council in the UK is also working to help freelancers and other folks impacted by the shutdowns. Theatre Support as well.  Indie venues band together to form a group to lobby congress for support of the industry.

While it isn’t about giving any money to support folks, MLS put up a training site so folks can keep their soccer skills fresh during the social distancing. And, if you have a young kid, this is likely enough to make you weep.

This is on top of all the other things I’ve highlighted over the last few weeks. If you or your organization are doing something to help folks, let me know and I will highlight it and share it here and with my community as well.

As I finish this up, I love when folks run and do challenges in their local communities…so I saw this one from Rob Sibbitts in Atlanta and he has completed his challenge…but maybe we can convince him to run another race for a local nonprofit.

My buddy, Greg Turner, who lives outside of Hong Kong just translated a report for anyone that is interested in learning more about the Chinese market for arts and entertainment. It doesn’t fit into the weathering the crisis theme, but it does give you something new to explore and since China is slowly starting to return to normal activities could give you some food for thought about what to think about in all of your home markets.

9 Jerusalem, Israel

16 Manitoba, Canada

Enjoy the magic of the aurora borealis without journeying above the Arctic Circle via Explore's Northern Lights live cam. The camera is positioned just below the aurora oval—a circular ring around the Arctic and Antarctic—in Churchill, Manitoba. To be honest, the two matches tonight were a bit of anti-climax as both Nouran and Karim limped off court, although by respect for their opponent, the crowd and the event, they finished the match. For the first match, Raneem started extremely well, as strongly as she finished yesterday, containing her opponent as well as possible, after a blasting start from the 21 year old 4/1 in seconds! Quickly caught out by Raneem 6/6, 7/7, 8/8. The squash was of the highest quality, and both Mona, Ali’s mum and myself, we were enjoying the show tremendously, both girls playing their A game. The only error of the game for Nouran at 8/9, setting up game ball for Raneem, 10/8, 11/8 in 12m. 9 winners Raneem, 1 tin, 1 stroke. For Nouran, 7 winners, 1 tin.

In the second, Raneem keeps the momentum for the beginning of the game, but it’s the reverse than the opener, from 5/5, it’s the youngster that zooms up, 7/5, 8/6, 11/9 in 10m. 8 winners Nouran, 1 stroke. Raneem, 7 winners, 2 errors. The third is superb really. Even if a few errors creep in for both, 5 in total, the squash is still superb, perfectly balanced between defence and attack, four corners visited and targets hit. Absolutely superb. Nouran goes up 6/2, caught up 6/6, 7/7. Enormous rallies.. 9/9. Raneem sets up a game ball, 10/9, tin. And strangely enough, maybe going for a bit too much, Nouran will tin the last two points, 12/10 to Raneem. 7 winners for Raneem, 5 errors for both, but only 5 winners for Nouran. The fourth is heart breaking. Can’t get any closer for both, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, 5/5, 6/6. At 7/6 Raneem serving, a huuuuuuge rally. A ball in the front left corner, Nouran is a bit short, and goes for a split stretch.. Her just recovering strained knee didn’t like it a bit. Three minute self inflicted injury break. Nouran comes back, but a shadow of herself, and it’s quickly over, 11/6 in 13m. What a bleeping shame. But it’s a second Gouna title for Raneem, and her third event in a row (BlackBall, DPD, Gouna).

Nouran Good news, my knee is not too bad and it didn’t crack like last time. Bad new is, it hurts like hell!

I’m going for an MRI tomorrow, see how it’s going, but we have the leagues in two days, so we will have to see how we manage that. We have two more major tournaments, Manchester and the British Open. And of course the World Tour Finals, in Egypt, organised by Karim Darwish, so I hope my season is not going to finish here.

I am very happy with my season, I was playing better and better since Hong Kong, Blackball, but something, things are going well, but your body doesn’t go that way. But it’s things that happen, it’ part of an athlete life. Raneem has won now 3 events in a row, that shows how consistent she is now, and she  really deserves to win.

It’s a shame as this is really not the way you want to win a match, it was a close match, a tough match , and I was enjoying it. She had a knee injury right after BlackBall, and I think that is related to it. I wish her all the best and hope it’s not too bad.

I think that the blood injury break turned me down a little bit, so I'm glad I managed to come back after being 6-2 down in the third. It's definitely hard pushing pushing yourself this way, but when you're in a final of such a great tournament, you do your best to stay in, and you do your best to win. That's what I was thinking at that point. I definitely love being here, the crowd has been amazing, knowing that we have a full house is incredible.

All thanks to Amr Mansi and his entire for putting on such a great event, and also for course Dr Samir for his support to the event. It's always special here in El Gouna. We always love being here, and I think I speak for the players when I say we really enjoy being here. Not just for the organisation, but also for the good weather, the great crowd, and there's nothing better than playing in front of your home crowd. Once again, I want to reiterate how sorry I am for the way the match ended. Preparations for the planned Gold Star Nation concert continue this month, keeping idols busy with engagements in the building to decide the overall set list and themes. Idols are asked for their input for suggestions on special collaboration and solo stages in one of the meetings they attend, but their suggestions aren’t guaranteed to happen by any stretch of the imagination.

She’s been asked to possibly talk to Gold Star Soloist 2 and Gold Star Soloist 3 about guesting at their concert sor doing a special cover video release to promote the concerts, and she’s also booked a private gig this month with Gold Star Soloist 2 doing a special performance at the wedding of an industry bigwig. She’s been offered the chance to pick her own setlist..

Their VLive series filming ends this month with footage of their comeback week, and a sentimental group dinner at a small restaurant at the end of it all to reflect on their time since debut and their hopes for the future. “I Love You” is the follow up to their last single “Lady”, which didn’t do as phenomenally as some of their past releases, so Gold Star hopes this release will do better, which it will, but only marginally.

Aria

With their successful comeback promotions underway, Aria is chosen to do a series of CFs for a mobile game that takes advantage of their more chic concept for this comeback. Interest has been renewed in them as a popular group and they’ve gained some new fans from this comeback, which is impressive for a group who’s been around as long as they have.

March 18: End of “I’m So Sick” music show promotions.

March 19: Racing Star M CF filming.

Origin

Again, this month’s focus is on preparing for their comeback album. With every comeback, expectations from Gold Star and the general public get higher and higher, so it’s important to Gold Star’s staff that the album be the best they can produce, which is the elephant in the room of every recording session. They continue their tour too this month, with four dates in Hong Kong. Early in the month, they’ll film a CF for Smart Uniform (despite all members being well beyond school age now) for the start of what’s rumored to be their final year representing the brand after a long term partnership. CF sections are divided as such:

Their newest Japanese album drops at the end of the month, so for the rest of the month they’ll be filming short videos to remind Japanese fans to buy it, and will be doing a few written interviews with Japanese magazines aimed at the young K-Pop fan demographic in the country with the standard ideal type, most likely to, etc. questions. Outside of that, they’re prepping for their Japanese arena tour that begins in May and are also in early meetings regarding their next Korean comeback.

All members should be moved out of the dorm by the end of the month if they are not already.

“RBB” promotions end, and with a quick turnaround, “Sappy”, their new Japanese single, is released. Gold Star is already planning another Japanese single release following their Japanese and North American tour dates. Their Japan tour begins next month, so they’ll be pushed into some extra Japanese lessons in between rehearsals, but will also be encouraged to brush up on their English for the later North American stops.

March 1: End of “RBB (Really Bad Boy)” music show promotions.

March 11: Release of “Sappy” Japanese single.

March 28: Taipei Monster K-Pop Concert at Taipei Arena in Taipei, Taiwan.

diet tw // After their concept meetings last month, the comeback has been tentatively set for a May goal date, so now that confirmation has finally been given by the right people, more time in the studio has been scheduled in, as well as a return to a stricter expected diet after a time where the company was more lax considering their minimal public group activities. The two monthly scheduled VLives they’ve had the past two months have been successful, so they’ll be doing another one mid-month with a bake-off theme (with teams of main rapper/lead dancer and main dancer/lead rapper vs. main vocal and lead vocal/lead dancer), where they’re encouraged to reassure the fans they’ll be coming back soon (without outright confirming the comeback plans).

March 1: OneK Concert in Seoul (with Alien, Knight, 7ROPHY, and Lucid).

March 14: “White Day with Aether” bake-off VLive.

Femme Fatale

This month will be the last month of filming for their reality show, so they’ll be filming the finale with a vacation to Thailand where they’ll have planned filming blocks on the beach, shopping, going on a food tour, and some free blocks where the members will get to choose what they’d like to film. While in South Korea, they’ll be shooting a photo shoot with Guess for their new season and continuing to work on recording their summer EP.

3 Ways to Overcome Self-Sabotage

Don’t you just love all the positive “SELF” compound words: Self-Love, Self-Confidence, Self-Awareness, Self-Esteem, Self-Acceptance, Self-Worth, Self-Care and so on. I appreciate these because of the experience I’ve had with that other self-word. Self-Sabotage.

New York Times #1 best selling author Debbie Ford writes,“Overcoming self-sabotage…is one of the most important conversations you’ll ever have with yourself. Honor it and know that it will change your life.”  The question is, are you ready to overcome self-sabotage once and for all?

Doing this one thing will change your life and grow your happy.

Living as the best person you can be means understanding that in spite of your highest intentions, each of us will sometimes sabotage ourselves. When this happens, it is important to remember that growth is not always orderly and even: Sometimes you take a couple steps back before taking three forward.

Do you have an upper limit problem? This phrase created by Gay Hendricks, author of the book, The Big Leap, discusses how we each have a lifetime of stories, habits, and fears based in self-limiting belief that hold us back in subtle and not so subtle ways.

We have a familiar internal success setting that feels comfortable. This self-regulated meter measures how we are doing towards our goals. When we are living into our highest potential there may come a point where we get uncomfortable, outside of the normal zone. This can trigger us to hold back from the fullest expression of our abilities, thereby causing us to self-sabotage.

Time in self-inquiry through meditation and yoga opens our eyes to see the mental, emotional and physical ways that hold us back. Here are 3 Ways to overcome self-sabotage:

1.  Know Your Unhealthy Habits

Only once you acknowledge the old pattern can you change that paradigm and create something more life affirming. Yoga is cognitive behavioral therapy. You get immediate feedback on where you hold tension in your body and how you speak to yourself. These patterns (samskaras) become ingrained into our psyche. The first step is awareness. Then you can do something about it. You can release unhealthy habits that no longer serve your spiritual happiness. That’s part one. Believe it or not Part 2 is harder. That’s where you know what you want for your life and you have to stand up for what your intentions are. You’ve recognized you do have an upper limit problem and can do something about it.

Gaining mastery over our destructive propensities, through the exercise of awareness and self-discipline with regard to our body, speech, and mind, frees us from the inner turmoil that naturally arises when our behavior is at odds with our ideals. In place of this turmoil come confidence, integrity, and dignity – heroic qualities all human beings naturally aspire to.” ~ The Dalai Lama

2.  Are you living as a Victim?

Letting go of the mind’s identity as victim clears the space necessary to see that we are accountable for our own happiness.

In yoga we know this as sadhana, and it means we work daily as a practice on our own inner evolution. This anti-victim evolution is where we take responsibility moment by moment for what we say, how we act, how we breath, what we think. Being accountable for one’s life takes work. Yoga’s strength lies in its ability to empower you from the inside out to accept the challenge.

Time on the mat allows you to stop identifying as a victim. You stop blaming others. You no longer require constant validation and attention, but instead take responsibility for your own happiness. Today, break the blame cycle. Stop being a victim and stop self-sabotage.

3.  Change Your Self-Talk

If you change the way you talk to yourself, your perspective will change, and you will transform your life.

Allowing critical talk to sabotage you is a deadly pattern. In the Yoga Sutras 1.30, Pantanjali outlines self-doubt (samsaya) as one of nine obstacles to our happiness. It is fed by negative self-talk and thrives on self-sabotage. On the mat—pose by pose—we get stronger and begin to believe we are capable in new ways. This confidence travels with us off the mat. We drop negative reactions and respond to life’s challenges with more positivity. It takes practice to achieve this, which is why we come back to the mat—and also why we call it yoga practice.

Today, embrace the positive self-words in your life. Say to yourself for five minutes of breathing or for the duration of an entire yoga class the positive self-word you need the most in your life right now. Repeating the mantra strengthens its energy and that conversation with yourself gets louder until you are living your best life ever, no holding back.
