the fact we never got season four of love island this summer doesn’t sit right with me

i have so many feelings about aj coming out as a lesbian, i think it’s such an important story to tell & i can’t stop thinking about how some fans are so pressed over losing representation that they can’t rejoice in a game doing a lesbian storyline.

here’s the thing for me

characters aren’t people. they don’t have agency, they are written by someone who chooses their journey/story arc.

throughout all of season 3, aj shows very little interest in the men. she couples up with seb, clearly not wanting to be with him from the first moment you see them together.

if you choose not to couple up with aj or tai, she spends the rest of the game with tai, but she doesn’t talk about fancying him to mc. when discussing love interests, she only really expresses interest in mc or yasmin. in the “snog, marry, pie” game on day 5, she chooses to snog yasmin and marry ciaran (who she’s only just met & not even been on a date with) because he’s “really sweet and lovely”. iirc she never expresses any attraction to any men, which is vastly different to every character in this season and every bi character in litg so far.

to me, aj’s arc is a coming out story because she’s written as a lesbian. she thinks she’s bi because compulsory heterosexuality is so pervasive but also from the writers’ perspective: because she literally couldn’t apply to be on love island if she wasn’t interested in men.

i get it, stories like this can make it seem like bisexuality is just a stepping stone to another sexuality, but i rly don’t think that’s the way this was written. it’s a common story for lesbians to believe they’re bi for a really long time because women are raised to be attracted to men. we should celebrate fusebox telling this story. we should celebrate lesbians!

exploring this story is not doing a disservice to bisexuality, bi fans or aj. it’s her story and she’s a lesbian and i love her.

i finished season one of love island with jake! i honestly loved plaything this game so much, so i am pretty hyped to start season two ( after the reunion of course! )
