WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD "A Duet With Louis Armstrong" by Jonathan Laurince.
A Timeless Tribute: Jonathan Laurince's Soulful Rendition of "What a Wonderful World" “A Duet With Louis Armstrong”
In a remarkable display of musical prowess, Jonathan Laurince has breathed new life into the beloved classic, "What a Wonderful World." Originally written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss, and first recorded by the incomparable Louis Armstrong in 1959, this iconic ballad has been reimagined by Laurince in a way that is both a tribute to the original and a testament to his own exceptional talent.
Laurince's rendition is aptly subtitled "A Duet with Louis Armstrong," and it's easy to see why. With his impressive vocal impersonation of Armstrong's distinctive gravelly voice and his masterful trumpet playing, Laurince seemingly channels the spirit of Satchmo himself. The result is a performance that is at once nostalgic and fresh, paying homage to the past while injecting new energy into this timeless classic.
What's truly remarkable about Laurince's rendition is the fact that he single-handedly rearranged the original track, recorded all the overdubs, and performed every instrumental part himself. This level of dedication and artistry is a testament to Laurince's skill and passion as a musician.
Beyond its technical merits, Laurince's rendition of "What a Wonderful World" is also a poignant reminder of the song's enduring message. In a world that often seems fraught with challenges and uncertainties, Laurince's performance serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty and wonder that still surrounds us. As he so eloquently puts it, "Our responsibility is to leave this world a better place for the next generation, just like Satchmo did."
In short, Jonathan Laurince's rendition of "What a Wonderful World" is a masterpiece that deserves to be heard by audiences around the world. It's a tribute to the legacy of Louis Armstrong, a showcase for Laurince's own remarkable talent, and a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving the beauty and wonder of our world for future generations.

Full Name: Ronan Daithí Devine
DOB: May 1
Star sign: Taurus sun II Libra Moon II Leo Rising
Parents: Lydia Keene-Devine & Connor Devine
Siblings : Ian James Devine ( younger by a year )
Occupation: He's had many odd jobs over the course of his life. The first being a rare book buyer for a collector out of New York. The second as an Elvis tribute artist ( please kindly don't call him an impersonator ) and the third as the owner of a small second hand music shop that allows him to be the front man for a band that plays a hodge podge of music at various festivals and the occasional job at the Cross Keys pub on the weekend.
Herb: Passionflower
Myers Brigg: INFP
Favorite song (s) - He doesn't really have a favorite artist/song. Only songs that remind him of his favorite people.
Van Morrison's Moondance and Tupelo Honey will always remind him of his Colly.
Let It Be is the song his mother used as a lullaby when he was a child.   Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World and
Morrison's These Are The Days will always remind of his son Lorcan.
Here Comes The Sun will always remind him of his wife's best friend Helene.
Hound Dog is an instant thought of his brother Ian and
Queen's We Will Rock You is Helene's husband Joey to a tee in Ronan's mind.
Favorite Scent: A forest after a rainstorm and the scent of the ocean.
Pet: The Devine family has one dog, a mutt found behind the Cross Keys late one night after closing. They dubbed him Magner after Ronan's favorite cider.
Embarrassing moment:
- The night he met Colleen he was so tongue tied he could barely form a coherent sentence. Back then next to no one had heard of Devine Intervention unless they were familiar with the festival circuit so when she mentioned that she had hoped that they would play as well as they had had when she'd seen them the last time he was floored. He finally found his voice and felt so self consciously creepy that Colleen just waved it off and gave him her number anyway along with a comped set of meals for the band and half price drinks.
Tidbits:
- The song This Time was written with Colleen in mind after she and Ronan moved in together.
- At one time before Lorcan was born Ronan's brother, Ian and his band mates Cage and Angus took turns sleeping in the guest room and the couch in the living room because they couldn't afford a proper flat of their own. Colleen had no objections until their weekly shopping bill increased to three times as much as they normally spent thanks to Angus's huge appetite ( may have also had to do with the fact that she came home early to find Ian was 'entertaining' in the master bedroom.) After that only the Cage stayed on, quietly keeping to himself and contributing anything he could towards food and the water bill. He still occasionally baby sits for Ro and Col if Helene and Joey are busy though other than that he's content to live he bachelor's life and work his way towards becoming a licensed tattoo artist.
- He proposed to Colleen on the fifth anniversary of the evening that they met. He had asked permission from both Col's mother and the man she considered a second father, Harvey Starling. They were married quite quickly only two months later at the Dublin registrar's office with only their mothers, Joey, Helene, and Harvey Starling in attendance.
- Has a small rose tattooed over his heart as they're Col's favorite flower.
-  One of his favorite dishes is Marmite chicken.
- Was a history major in college.

Pearl Bailey
Tumblr media
Pearl Mae Bailey (March 29, 1918 – August 17, 1990) was an American actress and singer. After appearing in vaudeville she made her Broadway debut in St. Louis Woman in 1946. She won a Tony Award for the title role in the all-black production of Hello, Dolly! in 1968. In 1986, she won a Daytime Emmy award for her performance as a fairy godmother in the ABC Afterschool Special, Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale.
Her rendition of "Takes Two to Tango" hit the top ten in 1952. She received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 1976 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom on October 17, 1988.
Early life
Bailey was born in Newport News, Virginia, United States, to the Reverend Joseph James and Ella Mae Ricks Bailey. She was raised in the Bloodfields neighborhood of Newport News, Virginia. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in nearby Norfolk, Virginia, the first city in the region to offer higher education for black students. Blues singer Ruth Brown from Portsmouth, Virginia was one of her classmates.
She made her stage-singing debut when she was 15 years old. Her brother Bill Bailey was beginning his own career as a tap dancer, and suggested she enter an amateur contest at the Pearl Theatre in Philadelphia. Bailey won and was offered $35 a week to perform there for two weeks. However, the theatre closed during her engagement and she was not paid. She later won a similar competition at Harlem's famous Apollo Theater and decided to pursue a career in entertainment.
Career
Bailey began by singing and dancing in Philadelphia's black nightclubs in the 1930s, and soon started performing in other parts of the East Coast. In 1941, during World War II, Bailey toured the country with the USO, performing for American troops. After the tour, she settled in New York. Her solo successes as a nightclub performer were followed by acts with such entertainers as Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington. In 1946, Bailey made her Broadway debut in St. Louis Woman. For her performance, she won a Donaldson Award as the best Broadway newcomer. Bailey continued to tour and record albums in between her stage and screen performances. Early in the television medium, Bailey guest starred on CBS's Faye Emerson's Wonderful Town.
Her support of female impersonator Lynne Carter led him to credit Bailey with launching his career.
In 1967, Bailey and Cab Calloway headlined an all-black cast version of Hello, Dolly! The touring version was so successful, producer David Merrick took it to Broadway where it played to sold-out houses and revitalized the long running musical. Bailey was given a special Tony Award for her role and RCA Victor made a second original cast album. That is the only recording of the score to have an overture which was written especially for that recording.
A passionate fan of the New York Mets, Bailey sang the national anthem at Shea Stadium prior to game 5 of the 1969 World Series, and appears in the Series highlight film showing her support for the team. She also sang the national anthem prior to Game 1 of the 1981 World Series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers at Yankee Stadium.
Bailey hosted her own variety series on ABC, The Pearl Bailey Show (January – May 1971) which featured many notable guests, including Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong (one of his last appearances before his death).
Following her 1971 television series, she provided voices for animations such as Tubby the Tuba (1976) and Disney's The Fox and the Hound (1981). She returned to Broadway in 1975, playing the lead in an all-black production of Hello, Dolly!. In October 1975, she was invited by Betty Ford to sing for the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in a White House state dinner, as part of Middle-Eastern peace initiative.
She earned a degree in theology from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 1985 at age 67. Here she was a student of Wilfrid Desan.
Later in her career, Bailey was a fixture as a spokesperson in a series of Duncan Hines commercials, singing "Bill Bailey (Won't You Come Home)". She also appeared in commercials for Jell-O, and Westinghouse. She also did some free -spirited commercials for Paramount Chicken.
In her later years Bailey wrote several books: The Raw Pearl (1968), Talking to Myself (1971), Pearl's Kitchen (1973), and Hurry Up America and Spit (1976). In 1975 she was appointed special ambassador to the United Nations by President Gerald Ford. Her last book, Between You and Me (1989), details her experiences with higher education. On January 19, 1985, she appeared on the nationally televised broadcast of the 50th Presidential Inaugural Gala, the night before the second inauguration of Ronald Reagan. In 1988 Bailey received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Reagan.
Personal life
On November 19, 1952, Bailey married the jazz drummer Louie Bellson in London.
They later adopted a son, Tony, in the mid-1950s. A daughter, Dee Dee J. Bellson, was born April 20, 1960. Tony Bellson died in 2004. Dee Dee Bellson died on July 4, 2009, at the age of 49, five months after her father, who died on Valentine's Day 2009.
Bailey, a Republican, was appointed by President Richard Nixon as America's "Ambassador of Love" in 1970. She attended several meetings of the United Nations and later appeared in a campaign ad for President Gerald Ford in the 1976 election.
She was awarded the Bronze Medallion in 1968, the highest award conferred upon civilians by New York City.
Bailey was a very good friend of actress Joan Crawford. In 1969, Crawford and Bailey joined fellow friend Gypsy Rose Lee in accepting a USO Award. In the same year, Bailey was recognized as USO "Woman of the Year". Upon the passing of Crawford in May 1977, Bailey spoke of Crawford as her sister before singing a hymn at her funeral. U.S. Ambassador and American socialite Perle Mesta was another close friend of Bailey. In the waning days of Mesta's life, Bailey visited her frequently and sang hymns for her.
Death
Pearl Bailey died at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia on August 17, 1990. Following an autopsy, Dr. Emanuel Rubin, professor and chairman of the Department of Pathology at Jefferson Medical College, announced the cause of death as arteriosclerosis, with significant narrowing of the coronary artery. Bailey is buried at Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Remembrances
The television show American Dad! features Pearl Bailey High School.
The 1969 song "We Got More Soul" by Dyke and the Blazers includes Bailey in its roster of icons.
A dress owned by Bailey is at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969, Bond no. 6, Dir. Peter R. Hunt)
After a successful run of 5 Bond films, Sean Connery decided to hang up the holster and explore other ventures. This would not be a permanent departure from the series, in fact it would not be his only departure and return to the series, but we'll get into that. After Connery's temporary retirement from the role, series producers Broccoli and Saltzman began pre-production for filming an adaptation of The Man With The Golden Gun, featuring Roger Moore as Bond, intending to shoot it in Cambodia. However, between Roger Moore signing up for another series of the television show The Saint and political instability in southeast Asia at the time, this didn't come to fruition, thus TMWTGG and Moore were shelved for a later day. In fact, OHMSS was originally to be made post-Goldfinger, but the rights legal battle I mentioned a few posts ago was resolved, and EON was able to move forward with Thunderball.
Enter George Lazenby, a 29 year old Australian model who had more or less no acting experience aside from appearing in a chocolate bar commercial. Lazenby is kind of the movie star that was never to be. He kinda lucked into an astonishing amount of potential by starring in this movie, but unfortunately for him, he squandered it by declaring shortly into filming that he would only be starring as James Bond in one film, as he had been convinced by his manager the the Bond franchise would not remain solvent into the seventies. Yes, time has born this out to be an incredibly poor decision, and incredibly ironic, as the franchise has stood the test of time very well. But, going from the tumultuous 60s into the more civilized and freer 1970s, who's to say if it would have been at the time? Yes, hindsight is 20/20. It's easy to, in 2019, laugh at Lazenby's decision as very poor judgment and mismanagement, but at the time it was not known that the Bond franchise would be a titan that transcends decades.
The movie begins with James Bond driving along in his sweet new Aston Martin DBS Vantage, when he gets passed by a totally bitchin' red Mercury Cougar XR-7. Given that the Merc was driven by a pretty woman, Bond naturally takes an interest, and prevents her from drowning herself in the ocean.....and is attacked by two thugs who presumably want the woman. After beating them down, the women takes off as Bond quips "this never happened to the other fellow", and opening credits role.
The woman, revealed to be contessa Teresa di Vicenzo, or, just Tracy to her friends, is the troubled daughter of an Italian crime lord. Her father, seeing some kind of potential in Bond, attempts to bribe him into wedding his daughter with a princely dowry of one million pounds. Bond refuses, however, he continues to romance Tracy on the condition that her dad reveal the location of his nemesis, SPECTRE numero uno, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Finally having a shot at Blofeld, Bond returns to London only to be told by his superior M to drop it, and Bond resigns from MI6. Well, tries to, at least, as M's secretary Moneypenny changes the resignation notice to a request for vacation. Bond then makes tracks to Tracy's dad's birthday, where he finds himself in a genuine romantic relationship with her. Inevitably, her father's sources lead Bond to a geneologist for London's College of Arms, and learns that Blofeld is scheming to attain a title of nobility, claiming to be Count Balthazar de Bleuchamp, and that he is holed up in a mountain in neutral Switzerland, running an allergy clinic. Impersonating the geneologist and donning his silliest outfit, Bond heads for Piz Gloria, Blofeld's compound high in the Alps, and, after seducing several of the young patients and finding out that they're being brainwashed to taint the world's food supply, Bond is caught and outed at the spy he is, despite coming face to face with Blofeld, who apparently remembered him looking more like a certain Scotsman. Bond is imprisoned, but escapes by skiing down the mountain with the bad guys, including Blofeld's head henchwoman, Irma Bunt, behind him. Hiding from his pursuers in a mountain town, he comes across, of all people, Tracy, who is in town doing some skating. Together they take flight in her Cougar, and more skiing ensures. Blofeld triggers an avalanche, and manages to abduct Tracy. Along with her father and his men, Bond stages a daring raid on Piz Gloria, and rescues Tracy, but Blofeld manages to escape on a secret bobsled. Later, with M, a weepy Moneypenny and a proud Q present, Bond and Tracy wed, only for Blofeld and Bunt to gun her down in a drive-by shooting, leaving James Bond to weep over the body of his dead wife.
Fifteen or so years ago, when I was first REALLY getting into the series, Lazenby and OHMSS were stalwarts of worst Bond/Bond movie lists everywhere. Contemporary reviews seemed to focus on one thing: George Lazenby isn't Sean Connery. Connery had been the face of the series since the beginning, a series for which the public had a voracious appetite for. In my personal opinion, they just weren't ready for the face of that to change. However, in 2019, as I right this, the movie has undergone considerable reappraisal. Industry bigshots Steven Soderberg and Christopher Nolan have cited it as their favorite of the series. Lazenby himself is still rather polarising. You either like him or you don't. I do. I personally believe that had he stuck with the role, and gone on to make Diamonds are Forever and especially Live and Let Die, and we had not had poor Roger Moore languish in the role til 19-80-fucking-6, we would have had a vastly different franchise. A franchise that I lement the loss of the possibilities of, and had Lazenby been the face of that franchise, matured with it, I think he would be infinitely better remembered. He has a youthful flippancy about him, and a greater physicality than Connery ever had. I genuinely enjoy the dynamic between him and Tracy, who is played by Diana Rigg, who modern audiences will probably NOT (it has been 50 years since OHMSS) recognize and Olenna Tyrell from the HBO juggernaut Game of Thrones. A lot of people didn't like when Bond wept over her dead body. I do agree that Connery probably would not have done that. For me Lazenby balances the quintessential hard drinkin' Aston Martin drivin' PPK shootin' womanizin' tropes that the series had become known for with a healthy dose of humanity. The things he could have done...even though it was literally 20 years before my birth....still bothers me.
The action in this movie is both thrilling and beautifully shot. The skiing scenes put that of Moore-era flick The Spy Who Loved Me, which was made nearly a decade later, to shame. The car chase with the big, brawny Cougar XR-7 is just awesome, a chase made better for me by the fact that it's Tracy, not Bond, behind the wheel. The penultimate bobsled scene is, goofiness aside, pretty damn exciting. The music, including the driving opening theme (the first, and only theme in the series to be an instrumental piece) and the Louis Armstrong-sung tune We Have All The Time In The World are really good and have a great late 60's feel.
If I had to pick one thing that doesnt do it for me....it's easily Telly Savalas....Mo'fucking Kojak, as Blofeld. Savalas, despite being a bigger and more physical and intimidating figure than Donald Pleasence,..I just can't take him seriously. I seriously expect him to say "who loves ya, Bondy" and start sucking on a lollypop at any moment. That said....he is easily the most fun rendition of Blofeld, despite Savalas playing the character deadly serious.
Depsite middling reviews and reception, OHMSS brought in over ten times it's budget of 7 milion, which was 3 mil less than YOLT. But Lazenby was out. Who would fill the tux next? Well....to the great joy of the general public, EON would manage to tempt back Sean Connery for one last (official) Bond film....James Bond would be back in Diamonds are Forever.

Episode 17 has us down to 14 acts, but that still means we have 90 minutes to force ourselves through, and JESUS, GOD, DERMOT, LOUIS, LITTLE BLACK DRESS help me. I was in an Armstrong-mourning-induced haze last week, so I could have sworn we were promised Kylie tonight and Little Mix tomorrow, but there’s no Kylie in this one, boo, and clearly, a lot of time to fill in the results show on Sunday, so we’ll get BOTH tomorrow. That’s thinking ahead, though, and much like a petulant Harry Styles arguing with Niall Horan in the award-winning documentary, This Is Us, I live in the moment, so it’s time to recap tonight!! My usual caveats: this is for @newleafover and @justlarried because they will never, ever watch it, and I will not recap in all of these performances because I do not have time for that kind of pain. With that said, let’s do this!
I love him too much to embarrass him (or me) with pictures of Dermot go-go dancing his way on stage with some seriously British dancers, but it’s very “cringe” as Louis would say.
The theme is guilty pleasures, and Ayda and Louis are the only ones who coach their people to deliver on it. I mean, what kind of guilty pleasure is “Proud Mary”???
Simon is extra-ordinarily amped up for this entire 90 minutes, and all I can think about is the Popbitch story detailing his coke breaks, lmao.
The show’s budget looks like it graduated from Bic pens, but that doesn’t mean Louis’s not selling it for me (god, I still need a new one, credit where it’s due for this gif):
Tumblr media
My new religion is Louis giving his critiques while simultaneously shutting Simon down; it’s a work of art that can only be captured in context because he’s, like, “comment, comment, shut up and stop clapping Simon, comment, comment,” and yeah, cosigned.
Me as Ayda dragging Simon for every single one of his unrecognizable, terrible song choices (and I say “his” because he overrides his team and makes them all pick different, awful songs throughout). My literal pleasure is watching Simon get flustered and try to defend himself before accepting responsibility because he hates to lose, and that’s what’s going to happen for everyone but Shan.
Hey, if you had to guess based off this picture, who’s in charge of this show?
Tumblr media
It’s both gross and amusing to see Simon finally wake up and recognize the AMAZING black talent on this series (he can argue all day long about how Bella is a star in the making, but anyone with eyes and ears can see that Shan, Dalton, and Acacia & Aaliyah are the ones to beat).
The sun still shines out of Dermot's ass, and I still wonder what is cracking Louis up so fucking hard in this shot:
Tumblr media
Take a drink every time Simon uses his middle finger to scratch his eye; unrelated, but I’m low-key dying for his, “We had a nice chat together,” with a contestant on a different team because he’s trying to pull a Louis, and OVIOUSHLY, Louis has talked to all of them, but Simon has barely phoned it in with his own team, so, sure, Jan.
Brendan is my own personal form of torture, but Louis’s not letting anyone on his team go down without a fight, so I’m here both for his BDE coaching (not pictured; it’s too much) and his cheerleading (his face doesn’t move, but he gives it the full foam finger point):
Tumblr media
Dalton, godddd, I love him, outstanding song choice, outstanding performance (the crowd goes WILD), and I can’t capture it, but outstanding deadpan impersonation of Louis’s “oi oi oi” (special shoutout to the random Little Mix [?] poster in all of Louis’s team’s scenes):
Tumblr media
Lots of acts perform, and then we get to Gio, who does a very “rock opera in the west end” version of “…Baby One More Time” (I’ll be honest, Travis does it better if you want histrionic, seemingly straight dudes covering it). Louis says he’s “the most polite guy that I've ever met, boot, it was just one step too weird and too intense for me” (he's so right), and then we get Ayda saying, “Real men wear pink, real rockstars sing Britney,” and I love how the camera IMMEDIATELY cuts away from Louis the second she says “pink,” lmao, okay, then. Also, Ayda does a fairly decent Britney impersonation?? Anyway, I’m here for Dermot calling out how Gio looks like both Willem Dafoe AND Nosferatu because he’s not wrong:
Tumblr media
Next up is Ant’ony (Mark Wahlberg’s British cousin), who picks “I Wanna Know What Love Is” as his guilty pleasure because his dad used to drive around and play it in the car, and Ant’ony would “stare into forests and fields and that.” There’s a lot of good content from Louis with Ant’ony in the X Factor house, but this is my summary in general, the embodiment of hahahahahaha:
Tumblr media
After he’s done, we get Ayda praising Louis for getting the theme right, and then one of my fave moments of the night, Louis capturing the feeling of when the entire crowd is booing your boss, and you’re just trying to sell some pens, but you’d still stab him in the neck if you could (the head tilt he goes through is pure “try me, bitch”):
Tumblr media
United Vibe (which I ALWAYS hear as United Five) comes out and does a predictably terrible job, so I won’t bore you with any of the particulars except to say that this is the high point of Ayda’s digs at Robbie (which have been consistent throughout the night), and this one cracks me up both for Louis’s reaction (it’s so pure and cackly):
Tumblr media
And for Robbie’s (I mean, she’s not wrong: has ANYONE picked a Robbie song for a party in the USA?):
Tumblr media
Bella’s indicative of Simon’s problems, and it’s hilarious to see him waking up to realize the terrible song choice and terrible shit happening on stage (as Louis says, “not sure what the moody guys behind you in shades are doing”), and Simon does his best to apologize because she’s a “star,” and meanwhile, she got upstaged by more than half the people on here tonight (and that said, it’s one of her better songs).
The show ends with Janice and the infamous Robbie/Louis camp discussion. Louis says it’s “a great vocal, but I found the creative to be a little bit cringe, it didn't really resonate with me,” etc. (AGAIN, he’s not wrong), and Robbie counters with, “Louis’s from Doncaster, and there's no camp people in Doncaster…at all…so he wouldn't get it,” and I personally read it as tongue in cheek (Robbie’s delivery is very dry, and this is Louis’s face, no eye-rolling, just tongue rolling):
Tumblr media
So, make of that what you will, but I’d love to hear what anyone who saw it beyond gifs had to say! Oh, and hello to the person who hate-reads these recaps and calls them "fake" (how dare you, I spend actual, real time watching this garbage).

Good Old Days (Steve)
Tumblr media
Summary; Steve has never been a fan of parties, so you come up with a little surprise for him. Turns out, he surprises you too.
A/N; Cute, fluffy, fall fluff is my stuff dude. Enjoy!!
Warnings; Pure fluff. Language.
Words; 1,544
Fall Fluff Masterlist
Steve doesn’t like parties.
Noisy, impersonal, dark things that they are. I know this and that’s why my eyes find him in the crowds every once and a while just to make sure he isn’t contemplating another dive into the ice to escape all this. It’s Tony’s first day of Fall bash. Pumpkins are everywhere, orange, yellow, and red spotlights dance around the room as if searching for felons but instead find heroes. Black and orange streamers decorate every still surface and I know for a fact that there are confetti canons waiting to go off when Tony gets just drunk enough. This isn’t as big a party as Stark would usually throw since we’ve moved to the new facility, but everyone seems to still be having a good time. Tony and Rhodes are teasing each other like crazy with Pepper to referee over on the grey couches, Natasha and Wanda are talking at the bar with Vision close by, and I’m close to the live band sipping on my gin martini and keeping a close eye on Steve. He’s leaning against the far wall and creeping closer to the exit. A smirk on my face, I put my drink down and slither through the swaying bodies on the dancefloor until I’ve reached the elusive Captain.
“Planning an escape?” I ask and he looks up from the amber liquid swirling in the glass held in his hand to meet my eyes. A little relief passes over his face that it’s me and not some stranger, but he still looks weary.
“You gonna stop me?” He replies with a smile teasing the edges of pink lips.
“Tempt you, maybe. Dance with me?” I offer him a hand and he straightens as his eyebrows raise. Soft orange light passes over him and casts him in a darker light. Golden locks turn golden brown, blue eyes look darker like storm clouds, and the shade thrown across his face makes him look older than he is. Still not a hundred though. He seems to think about my proposal a moment, surveying my face and expression before downing the amber courage and setting down his glass.
“It’s been a while.” He admits and takes my hand. Callused, tender, and warm. Steve’s always so warm, no matter where we are or what the weather. He’s like his own little sun. We walk onto the dancefloor and he raises our clasped hands, then slides a hand onto my waist as my hand lands on his shoulder.
“So far, so good.” I commend him and receive a small smile. “Sorry Sam couldn’t come. Said his mom would box his ears if he missed another family meal to pow around with Captain America.” Those blue eyes light up at the mention of his friend and a quiet laugh escapes his tight chest. A little tension rolls off his broad shoulders.
“Eh, it’s alright. Family’s important.” He tells me as a song definitely not meant for slow dancing comes on and we keep slow dancing. I consider his words and his pretty face.
“So why, during this lovely, family event, are you trying to escape?” I ask and he sighs, looking over my shoulder with a half-smile on his face. Blue eyes once again meet mine and he pulls me a little closer. Whether a conscious or unconscious, I don’t care.
“Family can be a bit too much at times. Especially when…not everyone is here.” He murmurs the last sentence and that weight is back on his shoulders again. A moment passes and I realize we’ve stopped swaying. I take a step back but tighten my grip on his hand.
“How about a walk then?” My hand waves to the door and Steve’s eyes turned surprised and amused.
“Now you’re helping me escape?” He teases as we slowly walk to the doors hand in hand. Neither of us make a move to let go and I feel his warmth travel throughout my body. I meet his eyes and feel that familiar spark in my heart at the small amount of happiness there.
“Something like that. Actually, I want to show you something.” I reveal and my steps quicken once we’re out of the main party space. Steve picks up the pace easily to keep up with me and seems to look a little younger as excitement fills those blue eyes. “I know Bucky made you come. He called and told me to keep an eye out on ‘his punk.’” Steve’s eyes widen.
“He called you?” He repeats in disbelief, looking at me in a new light.
I nod and tug him around the corner and into the stairwell. “The minute you left the apartment. He told me you didn’t want to leave him but since things between him and Stark are still rocky he wanted to sit the party out. Thought you might be down so I kept an eye on you.” He stops us once we’ve reached the top of the stairs and I turn towards him, shocked a little when I realize we’re so close in the small space. Eyes soften when he looks at me.
“What’s going on here? What’d you do?” He asks curiously, eyes wide and radiant smile on his lips. He looks younger than I’ve seen in a while. Guess he doesn’t get a lot of good surprises in his life. That’s why I put this together. I slide closer to reach the door and our noses brush. We both breathe in sharply at the feeling, then look to one another’s eyes. Smiling self-deprecatingly, those baby blues glance between my eyes and lips. Before something else happens my hand turns the knob and pushes the door open. Steve reluctantly turns and those pretty lips part as he exhales in shock.
A cool breeze raises constellations of goosebumps across our exposed skin as we step out onto the roof. A small portable record player, my own, plays Louis Armstrong’s Skeleton in a Closet from Pennies from Heaven. The music seems strange out here, but the way Steve tilts his head and shuts his eyes a moment to listen tells me he thinks the opposite. This is his New York, I suppose. There’s a table littered with covered foods; Irish soda bread, champ, stew, even colcannon with a little heart charm in the middle. Two copies of H. G. Wells’ novel, War of the Worlds sits on the end next to some cheap whiskey Bucky snagged for me. Cardboard cut outs of black cats and pumpkins lay against the food table and the one thing not keeping with the 30s-40s theme are the little pumpkin string lights on the edge of the orange table cloth. My eyes watch as Steve turns to look at each and every variable, giggling every once and a while with glee.
When he finishes and looks to me I can’t help but blush slightly. Blue eyes wide, smile wider, hair a little messy from the amount of times he’s run his hands through it in disbelief, he’s breathtaking. “Is everything right?” I ask a little hesitantly. A few steps bring him to me and he frames my face with his big hands.
“Did you do all this? Make all these things?” He asks quietly, tone insistent and hands gentle. I nod, leaning into his touch a little.
“Bucky told me what to do. Sorry it’s not completely perfect, but this is as close as I could get. Tony has yet to make a time machine.” I joke lightly and he exhales a little. The smell of whiskey washes over me and I swallow a little nervously.
“Thank you.” He tells me earnestly. “This is incredible. You’re incredible.” His voice lowers with every word until he’s practically speaking onto my lips.
“You’re incredible.” I breathe and press my lips to his full ones. Soft, tentative, and warm, so warm. I can’t even feel the chilly air around us. Especially not when one of his hands leaves my face to wrap around my waist. Forget warm, everywhere he touches feels like fire ripping its way through me and settling in my gut. Chest to chest with my hands balling up his button down, a little moan slips from my lips when he rocks his hips into mine. Just barely, his tongue teases me by running over the edge of my bottom lip. A cleared throat has us springing apart and looking towards the door. Bucky’s sitting on top with a cowboy hat placed crookedly on his dark hair.
“Done yet?” He asks with a smirk and hops down, walking over to us. Shit, I forgot he was part of the surprise. I look at Steve sheepishly, but he’s absolutely glowing with happiness. Bucky reaches up and puts a clown nose on Steve’s. Giggling, I watch Steve furrow his brows and accept the brown cowgirl hat Bucky smushes on top of my head. “Happy Fall, punk.” He punches Steve’s shoulder and gifts him a rare grin.
“Thanks, jerk.” He responds and Bucky steps between us to the table of food. Steve and I meet eyes and he steals a quick kiss before we both walk to the food behind Bucky.
And it’s looking like a good Fall too.

1/ 2 It is important for me to know your opinion. I was faced with a dilemma: on the one hand, the importance of representation and the ability for POC to be characters of European folklore, and on the other hand, why talking about a folklore characters for POC, it’s immediately starts to argue about their authenticity in European folklore, denying the existence of others folklores.
2/2 My question is not «Сan elf be POC», but "Why, speaking of POC, it’s still impose European folklore on them as a base one"?
to be perfectly honest with you, anon, i am also torn on that. i understand the importance of representation, but it's really hard to weigh it against historical or cultural accuracy. personally, i don't mind it. i don't mind women of color playing yennefer, triss and francesca. but then netflix turns around and whitewashes both triss and francesca at the end of the day and that's where i have issues.
poland's history is a little... difficult, when it comes to black history, because we don't always see the importance of some things and how some things are found really offensive outside of poland. let me give you an example - we had a show for a long time, where actors and celebrities would try to mimic a known singer's voice, wear their makeup and try to impersonate them on stage, and they'd be judged on their performance. and nobody batted an eyelid, when katarzyna skrzynecka, a white woman, was playing louis armstrong;
Tumblr media
anywhere outside of poland, that would be unthinkable. but we have a really hard time understanding that, because poland was not a thing during the colonial era, we have no connection to it at all. i saw nothing wrong with it when the show was airing, at the time, i was probably 15-16? and it took me a long time to come to a realisation how wrong it was.
bottom line is, i personally see nothing wrong with poc representation being present in shows based on european culture, as long as that european culture is still respected and presented in other ways. i don't think people of color should be excluded from european culture.

To Imitate or Not to Imitate Your Competitors? from DIT Web Solutions Inc. on Vimeo.
I love doing impersonations. Something I’ve always loved and had a knack for, especially through this great form of communication called singing.
A friend of mind videoed my ending of Louis Armstrong’s song “What a Wonderful World” this past Sunday. Unexpectedly, it went around to friends and next thing I know I was asked to perform it this Saturday for an event.
I’ve attached the 30 second end part of the video for you, let me know what you think.
Many companies aspire to be positioned with a company that they consider to be the leader in their field. For example, Alpine Roofing in Toronto during the 80’s changed their logo colours from red on white to the exact blue on white that a well-established and successful company called Avenue Road Roofing had. They then made their vehicles with the same big lettering as Avenue Road Roofing. The consumers started to even confuse the two, thinking one was the other, which was a great advantage for Alpine Roofing.
As I was helping Avenue Road Roofing with their advertising at the time, we all found this annoying. But, on the other hand it was the ultimate compliment and it got Alpine Roofing into the roofing game. They continued copying our lawn sign campaign and later I even heard they copied Avenue Road Roofing’s contracts.
We see China doing knock-offs of other successful products and releasing them at a lesser price. We see people like myself wanting to do Elvis impersonations or Louis Armstrong songs. We see famous impersonators like Jim Meskimen and Rich Little, who is one of my favorites, creating entertainment by copying or through impersonations.
With your online marketing, we look at your top online competitors, see what links they have, what actions they are taking online, and copy some of those efforts to boost you up in rankings and position you with them, slightly below them or above them. Don’t forget, there is nothing wrong with “We’re #2, we try harder”, which was a game changer for Avis Rental cars.
We took on The Shed Company years ago. At that time, I felt if we could imitate some of the online positions the big retail stores had, it would put them in a position to get some more orders.
Result? It did exactly that and they are known as the go-to shed company.
Send me an email if there’s a competitor you’d like to be ranked with, either above, next to or slightly below. You can make it happen; we can help.

“What Did I Do...
To be so black and blue?”
--Louis Armstrong (Ralph Ellison, Invisible Man)
Today, in class Rick (Dr. Taylor) said that the problem of racism can be solved with love. I disagreed and said something along the lines of “Race is not a form of hatred. It is impersonal and it is deeply ingrained into our function as members of society. It is the set implications and judgements that we make based on skin color. It can’t be cured with love.”
I was wrong. Race is a dissection of family. The institutions of family and race are in competition for my identity. I realized this on a walk through London.
There’s a timelessness about London that is evoked by a city that never ceases. I look around and see the persistence of architecture in forms erected and conceived over millennia. Cultural pillars made a city out of London. It’s so crazy to go over to the Thames-- “Wow, look at all the different bridges!”-- and to look at myself in the water. I stare at people out of curiosity, but they pretend not to see me. They’d rather ignore my gaze.
You can get lost in a city. Really lost. So, I go where everyone else goes, and where I’ve already been. That’s not how you meet new people or meet new family. You know, I have family here in London? My uncle was one of the ‘fellars’-- but, here, I don’t know who my family is, and for all I know, I’ve already seen them. I may have even disrespected them. Soon they won’t be my family anymore. A whole generation lost--
Tumblr media
I loved Leave Taking by the way. I’m West-Indian, and can verify that the accents sounded authentic, and that really means so much. That went unnoticed by some people, but to me it meant so much. It showed a dedication and respect to culture. It reminded me of my immediate family, who migrated to America from Guyana in the 80s for our opportunity. My Grandpa was more lucky than his older brother, who was the first to come to New York in 1975. My Grandpa came here with his family and his culture.
The dripping of the water from the ceiling was something for our attention, not the characters’. The stories were meant to be real, not realistic. It sounded like it could have been my family having those very same discussions, sharing those very same stories on that stage, in that theater. I debate on whether or not I was a participant.
I left my mom to be where I am today. Before I was conceived, I was mixed in a pot of collard greens and pum’kin curry by my parents. Sometimes, when I was little, I would think that my mom hated collard greens and was trying to extract only the pum’kin from my pot. I haven’t talked to her for half a year, and I feel a soothing sort of guilt about our situation. Now she has no family.
Tumblr media
Once I go back to America, I will want to return to London and do things a bit better than I had before. Or, maybe I will go to Guyana and marry the girl my family wants me to marry. But, things are so hard, and we haven’t got much of a future left. She may have to be deported from whichever Western civilization we choose to raise our children in. And, I’m afraid I’m not moving to Guyana.

Capone
A pallid, mouldering, altogether Orlokian version of Al Capone staggers across his palatial Floridian compound in little more than a bathrobe, both his adult diaper and solid gold tommy gun fully loaded. With a carrot clenched in his perma-snarl (all the cigars were exacerbating the syphilis that has melted his brain into a thin bisque), he opens fire on his scrambling, terrified groundskeepers. He does not know where he is or what’s going on; we don’t know if this is real or just another figment of his confused psyche.
Everyone’s foggy on context, but the moment plays best without it. Brief snatches of hammy transcendence such as this have been swaddled in a film that cannot hope to keep up with them. The odd ends sticking out of Josh Trank’s biopic focused on the infamous gangster’s twilight years – the Louis Armstrong impersonator, the shartings both deliberate and less so, Tom Hardy’s go-for-broke performance in the lead role – leave everything else feeling pedestrian.
When Trank really reaches for the artistic brass ring the recent wave of career reappraisals have suggested may await him, he keels into a diverting strain of madness. For the most part, regrettably, he’s content to slap a golden filter over tired gangster geriatrics. If it’s not dazzling its audience with over-the-top madness, the film looks as wormed-over as the decomposing lump of man at its centre.
Hardy plays Capone as a macho Norma Desmond, an icon of fading grandeur transmogrified into a ghoul wandering around the remnants of his empire. This comparison illuminates a lot of the more out-there choices Hardy makes about his own physicality; the dinner-plate-eyed stare accentuated by his bloodshot blue contact lenses and the strangulated voice making him sound like he wants to get that dastardly Mickey Mouse owe more to silent film than the example of the actual Capone. Whatever his motivations, Hardy ensures that everyone can see all the work he’s put into this role, an effortful method trying too hard to make him as impressive as he’d like to appear.
Hardy guides his Capone through the same late-in-life crisis most recently laid out in The Irishman, partially comprehending of all the damage wrought and partially unable to reckon with it. The 2019 gangster epic to which Trank owes the most, however, is the ignominious Gotti. From the overall off-brand aura (Trank visibly burned through most of his budget securing the sprawling Everglades estate location) to the distracting facial prosthetics to the listless stabs at drama, it all smacks of Kevin “E From Entourage” Connolly’s directorial non-signature.
That attempt to raise the dramatic stakes comes from a subplot about a $10 million cache Capone may or may not have stashed on his property, one of a half-dozen story wisps dissipating as the Fonz loses it. His wife (Linda Cardellini) won’t stand for his senility, his right-hand man (Matt Dillon) and feckless fail-son (Noel Fisher) have plans of their own, his oily doctor (Kyle MacLachlan) seems to play it fast and loose with the Hippocratic Oath, and the alligators lurking around his pond want to eat his testicles. This all sounds like it should make for a fascinating, flawed, messy, overstuffed movie, and yet in practice, it only sporadically breaks the ceiling on ‘interesting’.
Trank passes off a certain recklessness as ambition, his ideas indulged not as part of a bold creative scheme but as the expression of a desire to do whatever studios wouldn’t let him. But this isn’t the finger-to-the-system magnum opus that would’ve fit so tidily into the director’s career narrative; like the living mound of pulverised chuck steak carrying his film, Trank barely has control over what he’s doing.
The post Capone appeared first on Little White Lies.

Sagittarius prefers to use their intellect to understand their feelings. They like to file things away in mental boxes as being either positive or negative. Sagittarius is a Fire sign, and so accentuates the passionate, idealistic and creative dimensions of life. Sagittarius is also mutable in action, which means you are likely to have an innate need for variety and change. When passion and variety combine, there is often a deep calling for freedom. Because the Moon describes your natural response to things, or where you feel at home, you are likely to feel most comfortable roaming free – exploring your world and expanding horizons wherever possible. This expansion can happen in numerous ways. On the one hand, this lunar position implies a love of travel, and fascination with foreign places. You may be something of a “gypsy” at heart, with a powerful longing to explore the world and move around. You may find you travel a lot, or seek work and situations that allow you contact with foreign places and cultures. Even if circumstances do not allow, you are likely to wish that they would, and can easily imagine yourself making your home anywhere in the world. Dreaming of far-off places helps you engage with your need to be free. Anything that brings you contact with exotic people and situations will warm your heart. You would rather dine at a distant Mongolian restaurant than spend yet another Friday night at the local bistro. Feeling free to experience other cultures satisfies deep emotional needs. This urge for freedom is very strong, and can make you restless at times. You dislike the feeling of being stuck in any place for too long, and will need variety with your environment. You may decorate your home in an eclectic way, or surround yourself with objects that remind you of places you would like to be. When life becomes too routine, it can easily seem lifeless and dull. Therefore, it is important that you freshen up your perspective from time to time by getting out to places that you have not been before. Another way for you to broaden horizons is through study or learning. This sign relates to the search for truth, and ultimately pursuit of wisdom. You are likely to find you have a need to feel that you are always learning or discovering something new. You may be an eternal student, or spend much of your time with recreational pursuits that have an educational bent as well. You can feel that your world is expanding through the knowledge that you acquire, and even if this just means you are a student of life, you are likely to find that knowledge opens your horizons and helps you feel free. Sagittarius is also the sign of the teacher, as well as the preacher. The need to seek truth and wisdom can also translate into a love of sharing that with others. You may have natural gifts for inspiring others to be the best that they can be. You may be very good at explaining different points of view, and may find that others are drawn to you for the breadth of experience you can share. Your greatest gift is your ability to give others the same freedom you require to find your own truth. When you let them explore different ideas and work out what is true for them, you allow them to expand their awareness. You are likely to make a good teacher, trainer or mentor based on your ability to inspire and educate. On the flip side, you may also tend to become so consumed with what you believe to be true that you end of preaching to others in order to convert them to your point of view. You may need to consider whether you have a need to be right, and a tendency to broadcast your belief systems as if they were the only possible option for others to choose. Because this placement implies a strong attachment to the search for truth, there may be a tendency toward believing that what you have discovered as true for yourself should be the truth for everyone else. And so, you may have a tendency toward being bombastic that should be kept in check. When pushed by an emotional undercurrent, you may “share” from a biased point of view, based on trying to prove your version of “reality” and bring others to agree with your point of view. Recognizing that there are many paths which can lead to the same centre is useful, and necessary when agitated by the circumstances that surround you. That said, you are much more likely to be optimistic, positive and sunny in your disposition, with a tendency to live and let live. Sagittarius is a sign of broad-mindedness and you are likely to possess a philosophical approach to life. As a rule, Sagittarian types are more concerned with the big picture than with attention to detail, and unless other factors are present, you may need to watch out for any tendency to brush over the fine print, and get yourself into trouble through an over-reliance on faith as opposed to reason. All in all however, your happy and optimistic disposition should be one of your greatest assets, and help you to rise time and again from any of life’s setbacks. Finally you may also seek to broaden horizons through testing the limits of life itself. Sagittarius is associated with a love of challenge. You may have a need to test the limits of what is possible for you in quite immediate or physical ways. You can instinctively rise to any challenge that is before you, enjoying the feeling of conquest that comes from doing something you couldn’t do before. Here, you can combine your natural positivity with an actual task to focus on, so relishing the new insights that come through learning to go beyond where you’ve been before. Your nature means you are likely to be very enthusiastic, and can draw upon a natural flow of insight and intuition in order to solve the problems that present themselves to you. You may enjoy extreme sports, difficult forms of physical activity or just long sessions at the gym. Finding ways to challenge and push boundaries is a great source of emotional satisfaction, providing you with the reassurance that anything just may be possible for you!

❤️ Virgo Moon (♍︎☽) + Taurus Moon (♉︎☽) :
Virgo Moon and Taurus Moon are extremely compatible. They have a great deal of respect and understanding for each other. Taurus is stable and pragmatic; Virgo is practical and attends to detail. They are made for each other. Both partners are cautious and approach new things slowly. They both enjoy working with nature and natural materials. Both are concerned about how change will affect them.Their differences lie in how they react. While Taurus Moon will forge ahead once they commit to an idea, Virgo Moon will constantly second guess and criticize their choice. The worrying done by Virgo will be comforted by Taurus’ steadiness and emotional stability. Taurus, in turn, helps Virgo to relax and become more instinctual. Virgo Moon may become annoyed with the lackadaisical way that Taurus Moon leaves things all over the house. Overall, however, this is a happy and content pairing. They meet each others’ needs for intimacy and pleasant company. They will be most content in the country or if they are able to grow a garden or at least go camping frequently. They have a need to interact with nature in some way. This pairing should do very well with minimal effort.

They will happily tread the safe, logical path to financial security. Together they can have a very powerful connection. Others may view them as boring, but they feel secure and happy. They need to make sure they don’t expect too much of themselves. With their self-critical tendencies, they can undermine their own work. They do need to be wary of overwork. All work and no play will make even Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon dull. If they can learn to relax and enjoy themselves as well as maintain their responsibilities, they will be extremely happy.

With the Moon in the practical and systematic sign of Virgo, you are likely to be someone who is highly appreciative of structure, organization and detail. You will find your life works better with well-established systems in your personal and professional life. Virgo is an Earth sign, and so pertains to tangible or physical things. It is also known as a Mutable sign, which infers a need for variety and change. When practicality and change are brought together, the principle of refinement is found. Born with the Moon in Virgo, you are likely to have an innate need to improve or refine the circumstances around you – combining practical know-how with the analytical quality necessary to achieve specific results. Virgo is a sign of service. You are likely to find you have an innate need to nurture yourself and others through offering practical service in everyday ways. Virgo is also a sign of humility. You may be quite happy working behind the scenes, adding your considerable talent for organization to whatever you are involved in and happy to be of service, often asking nothing in return. The satisfaction of a job well-conceived, well-planned and well-done often provides the result you need. You should take care, however, not to allow this natural instinct for service to be manipulated, or taken advantage of by others. Ancient astrologers saw a relationship between the sign of Virgo and the condition of slavery. It is important that your need to be useful does not turn into the need to be someone else’s “pack-horse”. The Moon refers to how we need to be nurtured. You will find a tendency to feel safe or secure through knowing that things are tidy, structured and planned. Routine is your friend, and establishing well-ordered routines in your daily life will help you think more clearly. Virgo is associated with process and purification at both material and mental levels. You are likely to be emotionally affected by how well your daily systems are functioning and how ‘pure’ life conditions are. At a simple level, you are likely to feel awkward and uncomfortable in chaotic environments. You will feel more serene and so focussed in an organized space. At a more subtle level, you can be emotionally affected by food additives, pollutants and synthetics in your environment. This is not to say that you are ‘precious’ or need to be wrapped in cotton wool. It is just that you will feel impurities more acutelythan others. Above all else, you need a calm, peaceful and well ordered environment to access your astute thinking processes. You are nurtured by organization and structure. You assimilate information better when processes are clear, and sources of nourishment relatively clean. This is a sign of mental discrimination. You may have innate talents for editing or discernment, able to describe other people’s traits, dispositions and downfalls. Thus you may have strong writing abilities, or work well in fields involving communication, personal service and customer relations. You are likely to have a keen mind, and a great eye for detail. This can be turned to its’ full advantage by seeking occupations that allow you to capitalize on your ability to spot the ‘bottom line’. You are likely to be very good at extracting the essence from something otherwise complicated. You have the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff, and find what is essential in a sentence, task list or schedule. Because of your strong analytical ability,  you may need to make sure that you watch your tendency to be overly critical, finding fault with yourself and others rather than working toward improving whatever situation you are in. Your capacity for analysis is great for problem-solving, but can also be your downfall.  You are likely to be highly adaptable, but also prone to excessive worry. You can easily fall victim to nervous tension by constantly finding faults or remaining in chaotic environments that go against your instinctual needs. It is important that you learn to take time out when needed, and find ways to remedy the effects of too much nervous tension. Meditation, yoga, martial arts and other forms of mind-body exercise can be especially beneficial. This will greatly assist you to stay focussed and calm.Often, those with the Moon here can be quietly critical of self and others. Your tendency to criticize your own efforts may make it difficult for you to see your own true worth. You may underestimate your contributions and be innately convinced that whatever you do, it is not good enough. This can be a humble and shy position for the Moon. Unless other factors in your chart offer more outgoing tendencies, you may fail to receive credit for all that you have achieved. It is important that you learn to recognize how useful you are. Next time you are concerned that you have not ‘done enough’ simply ask yourself if you have improved the situation you are in. Rather than striving to be perfect, you will find that striving to make things better satisfies your need to be useful, and helps you take unrealistic expectations off yourself. On another level, Virgo is associated with the body and health. Thus, you may have an instinctual interest in matters of health, diet and nutrition. You may be naturally quite healthy simply because you have an interest in your own wellbeing, and notice that life flows better for you with regular exercise and good eating habits. It is very important that you to pay close attention to what you do, and do not, eat. Often, those with the Moon here have very delicate digestive and nervous systems. You are likely to find that you may have trouble with your stomach or nerves if you lose touch with your own bodily needs. Excess worry or problems with digestion may plague you if you do not pay attention to what you ingest. Taking in pure food (as well as experiences) is a very practical thing for you. You can be adversely affected by processed foods, and overcome with anxiety if exposed to harsh or critical people. Making sure you improve the systems that regulate your own personal life is essential for you. Through good food, routine and regular exercise you can enjoy extraordinarily good health This interest in health is often quite strong. You may have natural abilities in any area to do withhealth, nutrition and healing, especially in the area of natural therapies, herbs and pharmacology. Often those with the Moon here are drawn to service roles such as nursing and community work. Finding ways to be useful is important. Any activity that lets you combine your innate practicality, fine mind, and willingness to help can work well for you, leading to beneficial outcomes for all concerned. Individuals with the moon in Virgo are usually simple in nature and prefer to live a quiet life without the glare of public eye. They look for small things in their life to seek happiness and contentment. It is the small and insignificant matters in life like plucking flowers from a garden that give them real happiness. It is in their basic nature to not only take care of themselves, but to take care of others as well. Thus, such individuals are of extremely helpful nature and will be first to lend a helping hand to those in distress. These individuals love to have a routine in their life. They cannot do without a routine and if it is missing in their lives, they tend to feel that something is amiss in their life and they are not in their true elements due to it. They tend to act in a fussy manner and are often labelled as complainers as they cannot function properly without having a routine in their life. Due to such characteristics, they love to take on such jobs or tasks in which lot of detailing is required or which has a great scope for micromanagement of things and situations. Such individuals are always averse to public displays of affection and most of the times get repulsed because of that. Such individuals tend to be shy in meeting up new people. However, once they get to know them and gradually open up, they are in their own elements and strike a good rapport with them. Additionally, they are born sceptics in nature and tend to be over critical of themselves as well.

Born with the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to be innately responsible, pragmatic and measured in the ways that you respond. Capricorn is an Earth sign, and so pertains to the tangible and practical dimensions of life. It is also known as a Cardinal sign, which implies a need to take action. When practicality and activity combine, the urge to master material resources is usually present. With the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to have an innately serious and responsible nature, seeking to make the most of whatever resources you have at your disposal. Responsibility, and all this entails, will probably form a background theme in your life. You may have had to step into a position of responsibility early in life, or received strong impressions from your parents (most usually mother) about the need to live up to certain expectations in life. You may feel a deep sense of duty around supporting others, and will naturally be drawn to areas of life expression which allow you to demonstrate a capacity to accept responsibility. You are likely to have the ability to assist and nurture others in practical ways, and will often be seen as “the capable one” who can be relied on to find realistic solutions to current problems. The Moon is said to be in “detriment” in this sign, implying that easy and spontaneous emotional connections are not your forte. You are likely to be self-conscious in your emotional approach, and may appear reserved at first, taking time to warm to others and develop closeness. While you may have a huge heart, you do not give it away easily. You need time to get to know others and work out how you really feel about them. It is important to understand how serious or worthwhile any emotional involvement may be before you get involved. Whilst to others this may seem calculating, for you it is just a realistic assessment of the fact that emotional ties can be burdensome, and taking yourself seriously involves assessing exactly where a situation is taking you, and if that is where you want to be. Yet this pragmatism can also be a source of strength. It can give you stability and create a realistic attitude to life’s emotional ebbs and flows. On the up side, this means that for those you hold near and dear, you will be consistent, strong and true. You have an innate ability to follow through on what you say, and are likely to value greatly the worth of family, continuity and emotional commitment. On the down side however, your pragmatic approach to feelings and relationships may lead to a tendency for projecting to others a cold and unavailable nature, concerned more with the bottom line of what you will ‘get’ from a connection, rather than just being able to enjoy closeness and intimacy for what it is. The sign of Capricorn relates to foundations, structures and the gift of Time. You are likely to value tradition, status, and social position. You will require from others the same level of responsibility and capacity that you demonstrate for yourself, and will respect people or situations that demonstrate longevity and persistence. On some level, you are likely to feel most secure when you have solid structures and foundations around you. To this end you may be somewhat conservative, with strong ambitions for yourself based on recognition and accomplishment. Achievements carry powerful emotional overtones for you, and you are likely to feel an inward need to live up to being the best that you can be. You may have a need to prove yourself ‘out there’ in the world as a concrete example of your inner values, so reflecting an aptitude for responsibility and commitment. Alternately, you may have a much more private idea of what success and accomplishment mean to you. You may be less concerned with worldly success and more concerned with doing the best you can on a more personal level. You may set high standards for personal development, with a profound sense of integrity and authenticity. Whether your focus is material or spiritual, you are likely to be committed to making sure that you achieve the things that you expect of yourself. If other features of your chart imply more freedom-loving or unconventional qualities, you may be at odds with other voices within your psyche. If you find yourself struggling between the need to fulfill obligations and the need to be free just remember that your innate capacity to commit and demonstrate responsibility can be expressed in many different ways. As long as you live up to your own expectations in terms of what responsibility means to you, you will feel emotionally stable and secure. From this stable base, you can spin off into any form of expression you so choose. You are likely to be highly self-sufficient and contained, but need to remember that sometimes we build strong emotional foundations by sharing our strengths and weaknesses, talents short-comings and abilities with those around us. You are no doubt very capable, but need to be mindful of a tendency to isolate yourself upon your own mountaintop of duty and responsibility. You may have an innate tendency to expect that no one else will be as thorough as you are, and so take on far more than you need to, at times even taking from others duties that are rightfully theirs. Try not to look down upon “mere mortals’ less capable than you, but realize that your strengths and capabilities have been earned through hard work and sacrifice, yet only count for something if you can share them with someone else. In sharing responsibilities, you will achieve the position of respect and responsibility that you so naturally deserve. In letting others demonstrate capability and endurance, you help build a fertile platform upon which material stability is achievedWith the Moon placed here, you are likely to be innately concerned with how you appear publicly. You tend to be aware of the value of reputation and protocol, and so, will avoid doing anything publicly that may diminish you in the eyes of others. Because you recognize the value of a good reputation, you will strive to appear capable, contained and in-charge. Whilst this is useful in terms of earning respect, it may mean that you avoid extending yourself at times because you will not let yourself learn. You can set such high standards of achievement for yourself that you expect to be able to master whatever you attempt almost as soon as you begin. Rather than learning through a process of trial and error, you will stop yourself doing things unless you are already innately competent. It is important that you recognize the need for learning or apprenticeship along the road to mastery. Showing others your vulnerabilities will not hurt you as much as you may fear, and can in fact help them appreciate your achievements more through seeing your commitment to high standards through hard work. Finally, there may also be a need to release old, crystallized emotional patterns or unconscious fears through subconscious re-programming. Because the Moon represents the genetic or emotional framework through which we view experiences and learn about the world, there may be a tendency to ‘get stuck’ when that frame is inclined to endure and ‘hold-on’. In this sense, unconscious fears, limitations and restrictions may prevent you from opening up to an easy, spontaneous flow of emotion. Old habits and memories can prevent you from connecting with the here and now. There may be inhibitions around revealing the true extent of your feelings, and you may keep others at a distance so they never know how much you really need them. Developing empathy, the ability to self-nurture and kindness for yourself are highly recommended, This will help dissolve any old and unwanted emotional patterns, and open the door for greater vulnerability and closeness with others. You may find tactile or emotional therapies useful for you if find this hard to achieve. Because you are used to demonstrating fortitude and resilience, you may find it hard to soften and let others in. But when you share your capacity to accept responsibility and build solid foundations in life, you are rewarded with full appreciation from those who can understand the depth of your emotional commitment.

Born with the Moon in the lively, communication-oriented sign of Gemini, you are likely to be a curious individual, with an active, versatile mind. Gemini is an Air sign, governing communication, the exchange of information or ideas, and the protocols with which social organization occurs. Accordingly, you may find that you have an innate need to know as much as possible about the world around you, and may have a talent for numbers, speech or the written word. Gemini is also a Mutable sign, implying the need for variety and change. You are likely to find that you are easily engaged in new things, seek stimulation and may become easily bored. You are likely to be very adaptable, and love anything new. You may be an instinctive multi-tasker, and may habitually involve yourself in many tasks at the same time. Your need for variety means you are better when doing several things at once, but need to avoid scattering your mental energies so that very little actually gets done.  The essence of this sign is communication. Unless other factors in your birth chart dominate, you are likely to enjoy sharing information with others, and may be very talkative. You may find yourself involved with lots of different people, flitting from group to group, situation to situation, in order to exchange information and ideas. Information is the foundation of your emotional wellbeing. You are likely to feel at your best when actively engaged in learning something new. For you, information is paramount, and you may not need to study something in depth to feel that you know enough about it. As long as you have glimpsed the basis of an idea or opinion, you may then feel satisfied to move on. Like the literal social butterfly, you may find yourself moving from person to person, gathering data, ideas information or facts before moving on to share what you have gained. You need to know about what is going on around you, and will enjoy imparting to others the information they may need to get through the day. Sometimes, this love of information can extend to gossip. You may have a weakness for scandals, trivia and trashy magazines! You like to know what is happening in other peoples lives. This works well for you when your love of knowledge stimulates good conversation and an interest in the world around you. When taken to extremes, a love of gossip can work against you. You may find that you inadvertently develop a reputation for being fickle, two-faced or unreliable. Others may know you cannot be trusted to keep a secret, and so will exclude you from the true details of their personal lives. Or you may attract to yourself persons who thrive on discussing the misfortunes of others. This can create a negative backlash that will ultimately bring you undone. Discretion is an important trait to develop when born with the Moon in this sign. Because you are interested in everything does not mean you have the right to spread it around! This is a very inquisitive position for the Moon. In many ways, you experience a sense of personal worth by connecting to other people, talking to them about their problems and concerns, and finding out what makes them tick. You are less likely to be concerned with deep emotional intricacies as you are with the peculiarities of their life circumstances or perspectives. Once you have ascertained where someone is coming from and why, you are likely to then feel compelled to move on to someone else, having satisfied your need to exchange information, so entering another “data file” into your catalogue of human experiences. Your interest in others is indeed genuine. You may just find you have an almost unquenchable need to know more. In essence, you will need to find a balance between your need for information, and your ability to connect with others on more than superficial terms. As the Moon is also concerned with nurturing, you may have a special ability to make others feel good with what you say. Because you know how to nurture with words, you may know the right thing to say at just the right moment to get others feeling light and bright again. Gemini is a sign known for humour and entertainment. You may instinctively know how to keep things fun. Talking around the surface of things stop them getting heavy. You are likely to have an uncanny ability to turn the conversation around when needed to the brighter side of life. You are probably very good at defining emotions. You have the ability to categorize experiences based on objective fact, but may be less comfortable actually feeling what is happening. In this sense, you may attempt to avoid deep emotional experiences, feeling more certain of yourself with rational or logical discussion where you can analyze a certain situation, classify it, and move on. In time, you will need to learn to deepen your emotional experiences, so that you can learn why certain emotions occur. Rather than detaching from emotional involvement, you may find that experiencing emotion, then adding logic, helps broaden your social repertoire. As the Moon rules the instincts, you may have instinctual talents with words and numbers. You may be good at keeping score, at accounting, or any form of commerce. You may also have a love for trade, enjoying the hustle and bustle that goes along with bartering and retail. You may have a love of gadgets, and be drawn to anything bright, shiny and new. You may be an instinctive flirt, and love flitting from one admirer to the next. This Moon position is often associated with those whose main concern is with the external world, exchanging facts, ideas and commodities without getting too consumed by the deeper, or more mysterious, dimensions of life. This is fine, as long as it does not preclude you from acknowledging that you are also an emotional being, with passionate needs that also need expression. Then your love of logic can be balanced with a well-rounded interpersonal life. At its best, Gemini is a lively and versatile sign. Born with the Moon here, you are likely to have a quick and adaptable mind. Your interest in whatever is happening around you means that you will feel an ever-present need to “know”. Once you have discovered something, you will want to share it with those around. Upon this foundation, your need for communication grows. Emotional balance comes from being connected to your immediate environment and having other people in your life. The need for variety and change is usually strong here, and you will seek multiple experiences and projects to keep you on the go. Your curiosity can be both an endless source of discovery and a good deal of personal charm. Connected with others, you can share what you have learned. Moving from situation to situation generates feelings of newness and excitement that will always give you something interesting to talk about.

When the Moon is found in Pisces, the emotions are likely to be pronounced. Pisces is the final sign of The Zodiac, and has much to do with sensitivity – to oneself, to other people, and to the mysterious, unseen forces that shape our world. With the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to be a highly impressionable individual – strongly influenced by the compassionate, creative, imaginative, romantic and idealistic aspects of life.On an instinctive level, you may have a natural affinity for the abstract or intuitive. This affinity can be a blessing, or a curse. You are likely to be able to sense the hidden or energetic levels of life, soaking up atmospheres as if you were a sponge. Your feelings about people and situations are likely to be immediate, accurate and intense. Understanding that your feelings provide valuable information, but can lead you astray sometimes, means that you will need to learn to recognize the difference between an intuitive response to something, and an emotional reaction that is based on your response to whatever is going on. Your imagination is likely to be very strong. You can find all manner of nuance in many life experiences. You are likely to respond to all manner of visual and emotional stimuli, which work to jettison you off into the many worlds of your imagination. Here you can find recreation and release. Whether you prefer to escape into a comfortable world of your own daydreams, or immerse yourself in art, anything that works to activate your imagination feels like coming home, and enables you to nurture your soul. This is a great advantage if you turn your talents to anything creative. Most often, the Piscean energy is expressed through abstract art forms, so anything around music, film, photography, dance, drama, poetry or painting may appeal. Even if you do not practice as an artist, you are likely to be strongly in tune with certain art-forms. Because this sign is highly creative, opportunity awaits those of you who find an outlet for your vivid imaginations. You may also be highly intuitive, possessing innate psychic abilities if other factors in the chart are also present. You may have had a powerful sense of knowing from an early age, experienced prophetic dreams, or perhaps grown up in an environment where the women in particular were known for their psychic or healing abilities. Understanding how your “sixth sense” operates is your natural birthright, and one you can readily develop if you give it the time and respect it deserves.Pisces is a sign of mystery, and humanity is not yet at a stage of evolution to understand all that Life has to offer. We do not understand our intuition fully, nor do we understand all the dimensions which exist within our Universe. Accordingly, you may have a natural curiousity about the subtle forces which shape our lives which is beyond what other people understand. Your instinctive awareness that there is more than just the “Here and Now” gives you an innate acceptance of things which cannot be immediately explained. This sign is one of spiritual seeking. You may have a profound and personal relationship with your own experience of The Divine. This does not mean you are religious, and you may not follow any particular faith. But you are likely to feel in touch with something greater than yourself, and in your own way seek to live that experience out. As mentioned, Pisces is a sign of great sensitivity. Your life will be directed by feeling, and by the sense perhaps of an unseen “Hand” guiding it all. Love and relationship may be an area of life where you go through many lessons. Pisces is a very romantic sign. You may have a tendency to enter relationships or new experiences with rose-coloured glasses. Putting others on a pedestal means that invariably they must “fall off”. Yet you have the capacity for a rare kind of loving, based on the unconditional acceptance of others for who they are. Sometimes you experience an exalted kind of love that will bring you an experience of true union with another. At other times, you may need to wake up to harsh realities, seeing others for who they are, and not who you would like them to be. With the Moon here you need to be in relationship with others who respect your sensitivity. For this to happen, you must first respect it in yourself. Most often, women with the Moon in Pisces have an easier time, for women are allowed to explore and develop their sensitive sides. For men, this placement can be more difficult. Many men are taught from an early age to repress their emotional lives, leading to patterns of fear and self-denial in later life where the attempt to shut down and deny their intuitive side. Sometimes men born with the Moon in Pisces fear their natural sensitivities. They react badly to the idea of anything ‘otherwordly’, as this would mean opening up to parts of themselves that have long been locked away. The sign of Pisces carries within it an innate urge to escape – to leave behind the mundane aspects of life. Accordingly, you may find you have the need to withdraw periodically from the demands of life, taking time to replenish your highly sensitive emotional system. If you do not recognize when the time to withdraw has come, you may find yourself unable to cope with the demands of life. Withdrawal or escape is an important part of the Piscean experience. Whether you do this consciously or unconsciously will be entirely up to you.A conscious manifestation of this desire to escape could involve taking time to be alone, retreating from the world for contemplation, meditation, purification and renewal. Spending time by the water, or in nature, is especially soothing. Natural environments help release the emotional and psychological influences you have absorbed from others, and process those experiences that are necessary for your growth. As Pisces is a sign of compassion, you may also experience self-renewal through acts of kindness to others, consciously offering your compassionate nature in selfless acts of service to others. The trick here will be in learning not to take on more than your fair share. Giving of your self is a natural response, but you may need to learn when enough is enough. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces need to recognize boundaries, so that their generous and compassionate qualities are not taken advantage of. An unconscious manifestation of the urge to escape would be more literal. This is usually characterized by a person who seeks to escape from the demands of this world through addiction, drugs or alcohol, through becoming dependent on some kind of government or welfare system, or losing themselves by becoming the victim of someone or something. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces unconsciously become sick, vulnerable or destitute. However the escape is experienced, there is often an underlying feeling of not being able to cope in the world. However it manifests, the urge to escape is almost always about seeking purification, restoration and release on an emotional level. Becoming conscious of underlying motives and needs will help greatly in understanding the complexities of such a sensitive emotional nature. Recognizing that the need to escape embodies a desire to merge oneself back with the source of “All That Is” can help set up constructive paths to become involved in life again, through which a return to consciousness can occur. Born with the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to have an innate need to find outlets for your acute sensitivity. You are likely to be drawn to the romantic, creative, compassionate, service-oriented or spiritual dimensions of life. Your natural ability to sense what is really going on is your best asset but possibly your greatest stumbling block. By learning to respect your own nature, you see clearly the people and situations that will give you the respect that you deserve. Yours is a loving heart, looking for union with another. In Love you will discover your biggest reward, and the most worthy reason to sacrifice.

Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are likely to have an innate need to nurture, support and protect. Cancer is a Water sign, and so, pertains to the emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of life. Your empathy for others is likely to be strong, and you will have an intuitive ability to sense what others need. Cancer is also a Cardinal sign, and so is concerned with taking action somehow. You are likely to feel a sense of responsibility that will impel you to take action where others wellbeing is concerned. This is a sign of emotional support; of deep connection to family, home, and togetherness. A sense of emotional wellbeing comes from the family and home connections that you create in your life. The Moon rules Cancer, so is in its’ own sign. This will amplify the lunar qualities of emotion, empathy and intuition. You are likely to be strongly driven by emotion, influenced by your own ever-changing moods, as well as the moods of those around you. As the Moon is cyclic in nature, waxing and waning as it orbits the Earth, you too are likely to be a cyclical being. You are more influenced by your own inner cycles and instincts than logic or routine. You can use this sensitivity to great advantage if you learn to recognize your internal rhythms. Then you will know what you need in each moment, and will naturally follow your own inner path. Moon in Cancer people often do best when they can keep to their own schedules. The ebb and flow of emotion will affect their vitality, and so the kinds of activity that suit them from day to day. You are likely to be influenced by the moods and feelings of those around you, and can be deeply affected by whatever environment you are in. It is very important for those born with the Moon here learn to take responsibility for how sensitive and emotional they are. Otherwise, you may find yourself constantly tossed around in the sea of life, soaking up other peoples emotional and psychic states with little awareness of what is happening to you and why. For emotional balance, you need to recognize the difference between what is yours and not yours. Taking on the moods of others can distract you from your own best path. You may be unable to discern between your own feelings, and attitudes, and those of the people around you, for you are extremely impressionable, and likely to be instinctively responding to how others around you feel. This is useful when it comes to nurturing and supporting. You have an almost psychic sense of what they need and when! But for your own well-being, it can be problematic if you are constantly invested in others’ needs, with little conscious awareness, of what you need yourself! Ask yourself honestly if you know what your needs are? Can you define them? Do they depend upon the relative stance of other people? Are your true needs being met? You are advised to take good care of this highly sophisticated emotional mechanism by making sure you stay centered and grounded. This can be achieved in many ways, including spending time alone in nature or by the water when you feel the need. Meditation and retreat will work wonders for you. Learning to invigorate your emotional self will be one of the smartest skills you learn in life. Your instincts are actually your best friend, and will serve you very well once you have learned to decipher between what is yours, and what is not. You must remember how readily inclined you are to soak up the atmosphere of what is going on around you, and so, stay somehow separated when involved in circumstances where it would be best for you to stay detached. This is difficult, but can be achieved through practice, and using mental imagery to affirm that you are protected and contained. Visualizing a calm and protective white or pale blue bubble around you can be very helpful. The yogic practice of pranayama (controlled breathing) is another excellent tool for keeping your psychic field clear and contained. The Moon in Cancer can be very traditional. Matters to do with home and family life tend to feature strongly. For some, there will be an overarching concern for all things concerning family life. Having your family around you will be important and you are likely to feel very responsible for your family’s wellbeing. For others, especially if the Moon is aspected by other, more independent planets, you will still be affected by family life, but may find part of your journey involves the continual struggle to emerge from the “familial soup” so to speak, and become your own person. You may have to leave behind your family of origin to find your family of choice. You may have constant change with the people in your life, but notice you somehow feel at your best when there is someone there for you to take care of. A sense of belonging comes from maintaining emotional ties. You will willingly take on the responsibility of caring for others – this a natural place for you to be. Accordingly, this is a very maternal/paternal position for The Moon, lending strong nurturing capacities. Your relationship with your own mother is likely to be especially significant, and you may have a close symbiotic bond. Sometimes, the need to nurture can be so strong that you tend to over nurture, or smother, those you care about. With the Moon here, you may have to learn to let family members live their lives in their own way. You may have to let go of the habit of becoming overly invested in your family members’ lives. On a basic level, you need to give support and nurture to those around you, without jeopardizing their independence, as well as your own. Sometime the best way to protect others is to teach them what it means to go out into the world and achieve results. Like a mother hen, you may have to let go of the urge to keep your “chick” close beneath your wings. You nurture others best when you are not attempting to over-protect them from what may be, in the end, your own worst fears. On the down side, this Moon position can also be associated with a tendency to attract persons who are so emotionally needy that the Cancer Moon person finds themselves constantly in a position of taking care of the other whilst secretly resenting the fact that their own need for nurturing and support is not being met. This unconsciously becomes the perfect “hook” for the Cancer Moon individual to become absorbed in taking care of the other’s needs, whilst failing to get their own needs met in return. Often, Cancer Moon folk find themselves in codependent situations as they attract needy people, requiring constant support and attention. Your need to nurture means you get confused around where your true responsibilities lie. This will reflect the basic premise that you are more aware of others needs than you are of your own, and so will take action for them before you will do it for yourself. Withdrawing from relationships where you play “parent” is important and will allow you to attract into your life an equal who will recognize and meet your needs in return. Ultimately, you must learn about the sensitivity and subtle, unconscious patterns inherent in this Moon position. You need to understand your emotional self without being overwhelmed by its’ demands. This can be achieved by actively seeking to nurture others whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries, by recognizing your need to be close and protective, and then asking yourself if your needs can be met. Setting up relationships where you end up being disappointed just perpetuates misplaced feelings of guilt and responsibility. You need to surround yourself with people who recognize your nurturing qualities, and can give you the same in return. On another level, Cancer relates to the domestic side of life. Your home is likely to be very important to you, and in many ways your castle as well as retreat from the world. Your home should be as calm and serene as possible. You are probably naturally attuned to home decorating, and know how to make it both comfortable and inviting. This is the sign of hospitality, and you may be a great cook, or drawn to any activity where you can take care of others needs. Bringing people into your home is a great way for you to show them that you love them. Whilst you may be emotionally sensitive in environments not familiar to you, you can be at your best when home. Every effort should be made to make your home exactly as you want it. You may change homes continually in your life, but what should remain constant is the sense of peace that comes over you when you walk through the front door. Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are likely to have a highly developed intuitive and emotional side. You are likely to have a strong empathy for others, and will feel impelled to take action in order to nurture, support and protect them. Your uncanny sense of what others need gives you the ability to stay one step ahead. You recognise the unspoken opportunity present in many situations, and can act in ways that give others what they need. This sensitivity can be also be used for your own benefit. Recognizing your own rhythms or tides means you know exactly what you need and when. Learning to acknowledge your own needs is important, and may take time. It is easier for you to sense where others are coming from than it yourself. But once this skill is learned, there is little to hold you back. Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are a natural homemaker, family person and friend. With your heightened sensitivity, you connect easily with others, and get great joy from seeing them thrive.

THE KHAN
THE KHAN
Tumblr media
Hailing from uptown DC  (14th street to be exact), The Khan has boasted an distinguished career in both the underground music world and DC’s cultural story today. From the same scene that’s delivered the likes of Yung Gleesh, Jay IDK, Goldlink and Shy Glizzy, The Khan’s undeniable influence on his local and national peers cement his place among the rest in the Chocolate City’s music legacy. The hometown hero stopped by CENO to talk about the history of his city, how he  got into music, and the people and culture that helped him get there.
“I’m the Khan from DC – from uptown DC, 14th street. It’s punk, you got the punk scene. You got a go-go scene. You got a jazz scene. Black Broadway was in DC on U street, where I grew up at,” he explained. DC didn’t get the nickname ‘Chocolate City’ for nothing, and it’s cultural significance can’t be overstated. The historically black neighborhood surrounding U street, once known as “Black Broadway,” was a regular stop and home for historic black icons like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Zora Neale Hurston and educator and social visionary Mary McLeod, to name a few. But as the city became desegregated and black families started attending venues that had previously been “white-only,” the economy of U Street disintegrated and the area was absorbed by rapid gentrification.
Tumblr media
“It’s hella music orientated, hella culture there – drill culture, street culture. Now it’s a bar culture, it’s hella shit. Hella lingo and shit like that. But then you got me and my friends. Every artist that’s famous from DC, not everyone can stack that they’re really from DC. But we’re really from DC, people know us in DC and our whole come up. Like me going out to LA and doing the shit that I’ve been doing, it’s never really been done, as far are from like, young niggas. People don’t look outside of DC. Even when I went outside of DC for the first time it was crazy as fuck. I didn’t think it was real. It’s a small city, a little life every day. Everyone’s tryna work up, finesse, do what they gotta do. Everybody.”
Tumblr media
DC today looks different. Like any major metropolitan in America, white people have moved in without regard to the black legacy of the city, and they’re taking over. They own neighborhoods, blocks, streets, and establishments. A white bigot who ran on racist propaganda and dog whistle language was just elected to the highest political appointment in the United States, just a few blocks from where The Khan and his friends grew up. “I didn’t go to the White House til I was ten. And that shit’s literally a five minute drive from my house. I could see it from looking down, I could look all the way down and see it two miles down. I’m from 14th so it’s two streets over on 16th, but I ain’t never been in front of that jaunt til I was like ten. Me and my friends went down on bikes and got in trouble for being too close… It’s the capital too, that’s something I learned to accept – it’s the capital, nobody can’t do nothing about that. It’s just some government ass shit. You technically can’t even own land in DC because everything is federal property.”
Tumblr media
While everyone’s distracted by what’s going down on Pennsylvania Avenue, The Khan is on the ground, in his own neighborhood, and with his own people. “DC is like black migo shit. Around my way we got a trap building and it’s like Latino people in it, doing they thing. And we got black people in there and we all brothers. Even white people, we like white people. We just started seeing them and was like…I dunno, we should be cool. DC is different.”
The Khan describes music as a staple in his immigrant household, and the metal and punk preferences of his parents and family are easy to track in his personal style and the wave of music he’s known for. “My mom don’t mind if we’re blasting music to the max, she does the same. My mom used to wake me up singing “Chop Suey” as a kid. Every morning. I remember my mom doing that, and I grew up with my dad too, he used to be a metal head. Had like long straight hair, tight leather pants, so my whole family, my Latino family of the side is like that too. A lot of my uncles listen to rock, they all came here during that era and that was the cool kids. The El Salvadorian side.”
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, his older brother helped him cultivate his passion for trap music alongside boom bat, and even a more classic New York sound. He gives a lot of credit for the what we might think of as old-school hip hop to that same New York sound (“real hip hop” as old heads would put it). “My older brother got on his trap shit. DC, especially back then was like, everything the hood. Blocks were like, hood, hood, hood. My first album I got was Get Rich or Die Tryin’. So I was on my hip hop shit too. He was putting me onto underground – mixtapes, not buying albums. And then when I started rapping I was into old school hip hop, I used to be on my rap-rap shit. To this day I will bar rap with anyone that wanna go. I’m just more into flows and stuff right now, more into sonics. And that’s just the way I want to go about it. And I feel like everyone that was rapping like that in a sense, wanted to sound like they were from New York. So when the old heads, E-bro and shit are like everyone don’t rap like this no more, it’s like bro – everyone not from New York. Everyone don’t know how to impersonate that. We can’t fake act like we on the train in New York. What the fuck?”
He’s okay with that. The impact of his local sound on the underground rap community backs up the pride he has for being from DC, and creating and perpetuating a sound specific to his his lived experience there. But something DC and NY undeniably have in common is a rapid and widespread gentrification at the expense of communities of color who have lived there and influenced the culture for generations. The Khan describes leaving DC for a few months and coming back to find parts of his city unrecognizable, and definitely not the same place he grew up in when he first met the people who would form the rest of his group, Atomos, The group met at the historic Cardozo High School, whose alumni include Marvin Gaye. “Atomos is Mahi, Red and Chachi… we started this group in Biology class. Atomos. We were like sixteen. It means individual, that’s where the word Atom came from and we were like that’s us, and we just ran with that…we became a super fucking group in DC.”

They were confident off top – The Khan describes Atomos getting booked for their first show off one song, and literally creating the rest of the songs for their set in that same week. “I made one song that was a freestyle everyone uptown was fucking with - “Intricate Softcore Thugging”- I don’t know why. Then my friend was throwing this DIY show, that’s part of the culture in DC too, art shows and things like that. So my friend booked us for that show, it was in a week, and I’m freaking out like we only got one song! So we ended up making a bunch of tracks for that set. And that was our first show ever, at this little dance studio, mirrors and poles and shit. And our first song, we just exploded, as soon we started performing we broke four speakers. We had a big ass intermission at some point because it was like – broke one, oh fuck, grab another one; broke another one, oh fuck, boom, then it’s like this big ass intermission because we had to find another speaker. Then we had to calm them down, move them back.”
“We just kept at it. We were the young kids from DC – to this day we still making history. My man Mahi just walked Tommy Hilfiger in fucking China and shit, that’s cool as shit. No one in uptown DC really did that, even for the whole city, we kicking down doors for people. And whether or not kids know it or not - they not gonna give it to me all the way - but me and my friends showing kids how to do it and showing them the steps. Just paving the way for our whole city. That’s why it’s more about the culture to me than anything. I got a responsibility down there.”
