Welcome to the Dark Side
Tumblr media
A 3 star read for me | Okay so I DNF'd the first book because I couldn't get through it. Cress and King gave me the cringies
Book two was so much better. It took me weeks to get to 19% in the first book (where I DNF'd) and it took me a few hours to get there with Welcome to the dark side and I finished it like a day later.
Although it made me extreme uncomfortable when Zeus was too focused on Lou being young and a minor.
Like
“Ten years waitin’ for you to grow up so I could do this.”
Sir, ten years ago she was 7 🤡
But other than that, it was a fine read

TCU: 2024 New Mexico Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- — Josh Hoover passed for four touchdowns to help TCU beat Louisiana-Lafayette 34-3 on Saturday in the New Mexico Bowl.
Hoover was 20 for 32 for 252 yards with an interception. Eric McAlister had eight catches for 87 yards and a TD for the Horned Frogs (9-4).
TCU’s defense also had a solid day, holding Louisiana-Lafayette (10-4) to 209 yards, including 61 on the game’s final possession.
“These guys were ready to play,” Horned Frogs coach Sonny Dykes said of his defense. “They had a beat on what they were doing. I think we came in with a lot of confidence. I think they have started to really gel as a defense. I think we’re really starting to figure it out defensively. And guys are playing faster and playing more confident, and so couldn’t be more excited about the direction we’re going in defensively.”
Ben Wooldridge was 7-for-20 passing for 61 yards for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He also threw an interception.
“I think they’ve got a great scheme,” Cajuns coach Michael Desormeaux said. “I think they do a great job getting extra hats to the ball. They’re safeties don’t miss a whole lot of tackles, either.”
The Horned Frogs put together a fast start. Hoover found DJ Rogers for a 3-yard TD pass, capping an 11-play, 75-yard drive on the game’s opening possession.
“We’ve gotten off to a fast start pretty much every single week (since the Utah game),” Dykes said. “And I think that has a lot to do with Josh’s preparation.”
After Lou Groza Award winner Kenneth Almendares missed a 54-yard field goal for Louisiana-Lafayette, TCU went right back to work.
McAlister’s 1-yard touchdown reception finished a 10-play, 63-yard drive and gave the Horned Frogs a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Kyle Lemmermann kicked two field goals and JP Richardson added a 20-yard touchdown reception as TCU opened a 27-0 halftime lead.
Record-setting season
Hoover finished with a TCU-record 3,949 yards passing for the season.
“There’s been a lot of really good quarterbacks who have come through here and so it means a lot to kind of have your name in that conversation,” he said. “And, obviously, it’s a testament to the guys around me. I can’t run the ball once they catch it. I can’t run and catch it, right? And our offensive line they did a great job pass protecting all year, giving me opportunities to make plays and find guys."
Takeaways
TCU: Two years removed from an appearance in the national championship game, the Horned Frogs turned in a strong performance after going 5-7 last season. They scored on their first four possessions against the Cajuns.
Louisiana-Lafayette: It was a rough afternoon for the Cajuns. Almendares made a 24-yarder in the fourth quarter to account for their only points.
Rough ending
Louisiana-Lafayette lost 31-3 in the Sun Belt championship, leaving the Cajuns without a touchdown in consecutive games.
Up next
TCU opens the 2025 season Aug. 30 at North Carolina in coach Bill Belichick’s debut with the Tar Heels.
Louisiana-Lafayette opens at home against Rice on Aug. 30.

Ambassador Dr. Cindy Lou Courville (November 6, 1954) is a diplomat and expert on Africa. Born in Opelousas, Louisiana, to Earnest and Mar Courville.
She received a BA and an MA in Political Science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and enrolled at the University of Denver in Colorado where she received an MA and Ph.D. from its Josef Korbel School of International Studies. She took an interest in the liberation struggles in Rhodesia, drawing comparisons to the segregated South.
She pursued an academic career as a member of the political science faculty at Hanover College and Occidental College. Her attempt at a tenured academic post at Occidental failed, and she would refer back to that disappointment as a hidden blessing because she found herself at the center of policy and decision-making on African issues.
She began working as a political-military analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency, she served as policy staff director for Africa in the Directorate of Operations, and as deputy assistant defense intelligence officer for Africa policy in the office of the secretary of defense for Africa.
She moved to the White House, joining the National Security Council and her former University of Denver classmate, Dr. Condoleezza Rice. She was a senior intelligence officer in the office of the chief of staff, and the director for African Affairs, she was appointed special assistant to the president and senior director for African Affairs at the NSC.
President Bush appointed her as the first Ambassador to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She led US efforts to promote cooperation and engagement among the African states in areas of peacekeeping, conflict resolution, and economic, social, and political development issues.
She left her post and returned to private life, speaking at events, providing expertise on Africa, and returning to academia, including serving as a professor at the National Defense Intelligence College. She joined the private sector as CEO at the global professional services company, PMIC, Incorporated. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Yayy!! Thanks for your response!!! Here's quick* timeline of his backstory + arc, only vaguely referencing major plot points so as to not spoil the story (below the cut because it's a bit longer than I expected):
Louis Zhang
Born as [Redacted] Zhang on July 26th, 1894 in Sacramento, California
Not born in a hospital, assigned female at birth due to ambiguous genitalia. Had a relatively average childhood aside from frequent incidents involving him dressing in boy's clothing or doing "boyish" things (typical things associated with trans kids). Developed a fixation on flight after the launching of the Wright plane in 1903.
Late puberty came with development of both masculine and feminine secondary sex characteristics, which Louis was extremely conflicted about because of societal expectations vs his own gender euphoria. At age 17 (1913), Louis comes to the conclusion that he was simply meant to be both a man and a pilot, and runs away to pursue both.
Along the way he encounters an older transgender woman, Missy LeBlanc, from New Orleans, headed to Boston for a similar fresh start. She is the one who gives him the name Louis (specifically the French pronunciation, Lou-ee). They become close friends during their travels until they're forced to split apart when they reach Massachusetts.
Louis apprentices under a mechanic for a year and begins to study engineering on his own, though the grief from leaving his mother clouds his memory of this period. In 1914, at age 18, he uses his knowledge to admit himself into Curtiss School of Aviation in New York.
Louis graduated in 1915 (it only took a few months to be a pilot back then) and enlisted in the brand-new American Air Force, with plans to join the Lafayette Escadrille in France and be trained for reconnaissance in WWI. It was also during this time he met one of his closest friends and eventual lover (also the other protagonist in the novel) Cassidy Archer. Louis left for France in 1916.
During a reconnaissance mission in 1918, Louis was shot down over enemy lines and severely burned on the left side of his body. Even after the war ended and his wounds were treated, he was dishonorably discharged on the basis of deception--despite being extremely capable, the army medic deemed him female, and "unfit" to have been in war in the first place due to "abnormalities."
Stranded in Germany with no money and no community, Louis remembered information his old friend Missy had shared with him about a doctor, Magnus Hirschfeld* (a real individual) who was pioneering the study of sexology in Berlin. *I haven't done extensive research into his treatment of intersex people, however from what I have seen so far it appears to be positive especially for the time. Here, Louis learns about his body, gender identity, and homosexuality. He undergoes top surgery and, after recovering, works for a few years to save up for his return to America
Louis returns in 1921, after prohibition has already started, and manages to reunite with Cassidy. This is where the novel begins.
Louis gets involved in rum running and, through it, uncovers NYC's queer underbelly. He begins to sink too deep though, becoming an alcoholic, resorting to crime/other risk-taking behavior including sex, and feeling like an outsider within his own scene because of his dissociation from years of army/wartime/medical trauma. His mental health begins to decline, finally breaking because of a story event involving his friend Cassidy. His remainder of self-preservation and pride crumbles out of financial desperation; he becomes a street prostitute from 1924-1926.**
**Louis was someone previously who, while he never looked down on sex workers, was incredibly adverse to anything he perceived as exploitation, a principal that he was forced to let go of as the army essentially used his skills and threw him away. What he is doing is never portrayed as wrong, but it is portrayed as being harmful to him because he's not someone who would let others use his body in this way. It was also even more dangerous for him because of transphobia, intersexism, and anti-Chinese racism.
Louis is able to improve his mental health and financial situation after reuniting with Missy, who now owns a queer-safe speakeasy called The Monarch in Harlem. She gives him a spare room to sleep in, and the consistent community and work (despite how he resents it) serve to help him truly heal. This compounds when he and Cassidy mend their friendship and mutually fall in love, at which point Cassidy learns about his past and accepts him, recounting similar stories of medical abuse for his homosexuality as a teenager (won't get into this here because spoilers).
The sexual, platonic, and romantic aspects of Louis and Cassidy's relationship help Louis along the road to loving himself and his body for what it *is* rather than what it can do for others or how others view it as being "wrong".
So yeah!! That's only 3/4ths of the way through, but it accounts for everything I wanted to mention. And yes this is just the basis of his story because it's a lot more intertwined with cassidy and other plot elements and. 😭 i'm sorry for how long it is but if you or anyone else wants to read it and share ur thoughts on him i would really appreciate it :D lmk if there's anything specifically about him that rubs you the wrong way, or anything you like but could be improved on
Hello! I'm currently writing a novel featuring an intersex protagonist in the 1920s gay scene of NYC, but I'm worried about accidental fetishization-- I want to be particularly sensitive towards this as sex (and specifically prostitution) are important to his narrative arc. Is it possible I could receive critique on him from you or other intersex ppl if I were to share a bare-bones summary of his backstory and arc? I plan on fully hiring a sensitivity reader later on but i'm only on like. chapter 1 so I want to make sure I'm not baking really big mistakes into his story before it's too difficult to change it. your blog is so cool btw i'm learning so much :D
Wow, that sounds super interesting!! I know I am just one person, but I am totally open towards offering criticism and feedback. If it helps at all, I regularly beta read fanfiction, fiction, and nonfiction for people so it's something I do have experience in. And it's great that you're considerate of the need for sensitivity teams. I don't know of anyone else who would be able to provide feedback, but if anyone else is interested feel free to comment on this post.
