I've seen so many reviews (not on this site, lol) of Mysterious Lotus Casebook that talk about how refreshing it was to watch a wuxia show with no romance whatsoever and I'm just over here like...did we watch the same show?
I mean
Did
We
Watch
The
Same
Show???
#this doesn't even include all the “xiaobao”s “xiao hua”s and “a-fei”s these guys are throwing at each other in front of the whole jianghu#lotus trio#“bromance”#mysterious lotus casebook

For the WIP game, laugh??
Well, you just gave me an excuse to post a very belated...
WiP Wednesday
...so, thank you, @thehumantrampoline! ;D
[If anyone else wants to send words for the WiP game, please do! And if you want to try specifying a fandom, you can do so. If it's a fandom I've been in, odds are I have a WiP for it. XD]
Set about 6-12 months after Li Lianhua visits Tianji Hall to impart a little Yangzhouman-healing to Fang Duobing...
[Earlier snippets of this fic in no particular order.]
Li Lianhua put the latest of Xiaobao's letters into the box with the rest and tucked it away. Most of his letters were much the same: effusive thanks, admonishments to take care of himself, threats against Wuyan's imaginary thieving impulses, offers of hospitality… and now this.
Li Lianhua lifted the box that had come with this latest letter. He'd ignored Xiaobao's offer of gifts and assistance, because such things hadn't been necessary. They had their garden, they had his doctoring skills, and Lao Di had numerous accounts that no one in Jinyuanmeng was even aware of, much less would notice if they were utilized. They didn't want for anything… at least not anything money could buy.
It seemed, however, that Xiaobao was determined to send gifts, regardless of their need or lack thereof. Li Lianhua slowly opened the box, then sucked in a breath.
The hairpin was delicate silver in the shape of a branch, with little fans of needle-like leaves sprouting from the forked end. It was delicately made, but had a comforting heft to it, sturdy enough to take some rough handling. It wasn't the quite the lotus theme he had been thus far drawn to in the hair ornaments he'd worn in this new life, but it was close kin. Li Lianhua rans his fingers over it, a smile twitching onto his lips in spite of himself.
It was beautiful.
It also wasn't an entirely appropriate gift for a child to give an adult. The craftsmanship was masterful, the detailing exquisite; it must have cost a small fortune. And if Li Lianhua wished to spend that kind of money on his hair ornaments, then he would have done. He didn't need a child picking out his accessories.
…then again, the money was already spent. So what was the harm?
Later on, as he was making dinner, gentle fingers ran themselves along the new hairpin, where it was threaded through his hair, before drifting down his neck in a gentle caress. Li Lianhua shivered as those hands were replaced by lips and a hint of teeth. Just as Li Lianhua was about to put down his knife and forget about dinner for a while, those hands and those lips disappeared, replaced by a low grumble of a voice.
"The hairpin is new."
A pause.
"Fang Duobing?"
Li Lianhua returned to chopping up the vegetables for dinner. "How did you know?"
"He might have mentioned it one or two letters ago. Sent a drawing. Asked if I thought you'd like it."
Li Lianhua snorted out a brief laugh. "Did he, now. And you neglected to warn me about this, why?"
Those hands returned, this time wrapping around his middle, A-Fei's body pressed all along his back. There was still enough of a chill in the air from the last vestiges of winter that Li Lianhua appreciated the heat that came with the cuddling, but it was going to be far more difficult to cook with A-Fei hanging off of him like an octopus. "That isn't an answer, Lao Di."
A-Fei buried his smile into the crook of Li Lianhua's neck, along with a few scattered kisses. When he eventually lifted his head, Li Lianhua's own head was spinning just a little, and he'd almost forgotten his own question by the time Lao Di answered it.
"I wanted it to be a surprise."
Li Lianhua took a moment to regather his widely scattered thoughts before responding. "…why?"
Lao Di stepped back, taking all that lovely warmth with him, as he slowly slid the hair ornament out of his own hair and began to strip off his outer layers. Li Lianhua found himself shivering again… and not altogether from the cold. By the time A-Fei had reached the bed and stretched out on it, he was completely, gloriously nude. He crooked a finger in Li Lianhua's direction, and for just a moment, Li Lianhua had no idea how he was supposed to respond to all of that on display in his bed.
Then A-Fei smiled. "Don't you want the rest of your present?"
…maybe he could get used to surprises.

The thing is, the moment Di Feisheng realise he likes likes Fang Duobing, it's over for Li Lianhua. Di Feisheng is the type of guy to get what he wants. And he will not let Li Lianhua run away from the OT3 no matter how hard he tries.

WIP Wednesday
It's somehow Wednesday again! Enjoy DFS and FDB trying to comfort LLH during a nightmare.
(You can find more excerpts here.)
A-Fei cut himself off, head whipping around to look at Li Lianhua. “Xiangyi?” All trace of the storm had vanished, leaving only worry in its wake.
Fang Duobing sat bolt upright. “What’s wrong?”
Li Lianhua’s hand twitched.
Huli Jing whined and shifted to drape herself across Li Lianhua’s knees.
“Where’s the incense?” a-Fei snapped, glancing frantically around the room.
“What?”
“Incense,” a-Fei bit out. “From the parcel. Find it. Now.”
Fang Duobing bit back his demand for details. “On it,” he said instead, yanking the parcel from his robe and tugging at the strings. Damn it, why had he tied them so tightly?
“Xiangyi, it’s alright,” a-Fei said, his gruff voice gentled. He tapped Li Lianhua’s pulse point repeatedly. “You’re in Lotus Tower. You’re safe. It’s time to wake up.”
A nightmare? He should have known. Of course a-Fei would have something for treating them, and of course he wouldn’t have wanted to talk about–
“–No,” Li Lianhua mumbled, “no, don’t–”
“You’re safe, Xiangyi,” a-Fei said more urgently, squeezing his wrist and giving it a shake. You’re free. Now stop fighting and open your eyes!”
Oh, shit, if he was dreaming of whatever happened earlier, and he tried to destroy his heart meridian again–
“–I can’t wake him up,” a-Fei hissed. “Hurry.”
“Understood.” Fuck it. Fang Duobing snapped the string in half and tore the packaging open. Dried herbs spilled on the ground like tears.
“Don’t do this,” Li Lianhua begged, his voice breaking.
“It’s not real,” a-Fei said, gripping his shoulder, “whatever you’re seeing, you already survived it. It can’t hurt you. Follow my voice and open your eyes.”
Duobing’s fingertips finally bumped something long and thin. “Found it,” he said, jumping to his feet. Fuck, where was the incense burner? He’d stowed it when he’d driven the Lotus Tower here, which meant it was–“The kitchen. Hang on, Xiaohua’er,” he said, sprinting to the front of the Lotus Tower.
Fuck fuck fuck. He yanked cabinet drawers open, feeling around the pots and pans, until–
“–I got it,” he called out, rushing back into the room, shoving the incense stick into the burner as he went.
A-Fei had shifted to his knees, his dao abandoned on the bed, and had one hand splayed over Xiaohua’s chest, preemptively radiating qi, and the other wrapped around his wrist, fingertips to pulse, hovering close to his lips. “Light it,” he snapped, not taking his eyes from Xiaohua. “Xiangyi,” he murmured, “Lianhua. Xiaohua. I’m here. Xiaobao’s here. No one else. We won’t let anyone hurt you again. It’s a dream, alright? Just a dream. Open your eyes.”
Fang Duobing shoved some clutter off the nightstand, slammed the burner in the newly cleared space, and fumbled in his robe for his flame stick.
Xiaohua thrashed wildly. “Stop! Please stop!”
Fang Duobing lit the incense, capped the flame stick, tossed it somewhere, and rushed to the bed. “It’s ready!” he said, holding it out to a-Fei.
“Bring it here,” a-Fei said, twisting to the side to make space while still keeping a hand on Xiaohua’s heart.
Fang Duobing sat on the edge of the bed, against Xiaohua’s hip, hovering the incense burner over Xiaohua’s chest, and tried to waft the fumes closer with his free hand. “Like this?”
“Let me go,” Xiaohua sobbed, “Please, Shiniang, let me go!!”
Wait, then the healer was his shiniang? Shit, of course, why hadn’t he thought of that before? That would explain everything–
–Why did a-Fei look like he’d just been stabbed?
“A-Fei?” he whispered.
A-Fei blinked, and the raw devastation on his face turned into cold, consuming rage. “She’s not here. We won’t let her hurt you again.”
Oh. Oh no.
“It’s ok, Xiaohua’er,” Fang Duobing said. “We won’t let anything happen to her.”
A-Fei shot him a look of such abject hatred Fang Duobing was vaguely surprised he didn’t gut him with his dao on the spot.
“Trust me,” Fang Duobing mouthed at him. “We won’t let her sacrifice herself for you. We promise.” He grabbed Xiaohua’s free hand and squeezed it. “You saved her, ok? You’re both safe. No one has to die. You’ve done enough. You can rest now, alright? Just breathe. That’s it. Nice, deep breaths.”
He stroked Xiaohua’s hand, keeping up a steady stream of encouraging murmurs, until the faint tremors coursing through his arms had stopped, until his breath evened out, until his face had once again gone slack with restful sleep.
Fang Duobing gave Xiaohua’s hand another squeeze, placed it carefully back on top of the blanket, and forced himself to release it. “Sleep well, Xiaohua’er,” he whispered, tucking a flyaway wisp of hair behind Xiaohua’s ear.
A-Fei hadn’t made a sound since Fang Duobing had started speaking, other than the rustle of fabric when he changed position, removed his hand from Li Lianhua’s chest, and slipped back into his earlier post in the corner.
Maybe his headache was acting up again?
A-Fei looked mostly normal: the dao was back on his lap, his legs were crossed, and he seemed to be meditating again. The only difference from earlier was that now he was holding Li Lianhua’s wrist in both hands, and his head was ever so slightly bowed over it.
He thought back on how gutted and horrified a-Fei had looked when Li Lianhua had shouted his Shiniang’s name. How furious he’d been when Duobing had promised to keep her safe.
There was no way he was as fine as he was pretending to be.

something something fang duobing from li lianhua's present and di feisheng from li xiangyi's past. the both of them showing him that all of him deserves to be loved, is worthy of love, is more than a reputation or a failure. just by loving him so
i guess that's why any single leg of difanghua just feels incomplete to me
(li xiangyi is li lianhua, li lianhua is li xiangyi) (stop running away from yourself; you live) (i want an ending where he finally at least wants to live) (where he finally at least tries to go on) (because he is loved; because he is a person, not just a ghost)

I would love a Mysterious Lotus Casebook and Black Sails crossover. I just think the lotus trio and the crew would have so much fun.
Li Lianhua and Flint and Silver lying to everyone and everything "for their own good" and being fiendishly bisexual about it
Charles Vane and Di Feisheng and Anne looking to fight anything and everything in the most aggressive way possible, while also being deeply committed to their true love
Fang Duobing and Billy Bones being so full of love and constantly confused
Max and Granny Guthrie and Mama Fang and Jack exhausted with these MEN and their SHENANIGANS and NO ONE LISTENING TO THEM
I just think they'd have a lot to talk about. And then they'd destroy the heteropatriarchy (England and Spain and the jianghu and civilization just generally) together.

Accurate.
Mysterious Lotus Casebook. Also known as 'our three main leads spend the entire show actively running away from the women in their life'. Li Lianhua is the only one who is somewhat graceful about it.
It's wild.

Once again it's long past WiP Wednesday, but I started work on a new fic that was supposed to be short and is looking like it will be... not that. 😅 So, have a snippet of a belated birthday fic for Li Lianhua. Enjoy? ^_^
*
The package was clumsily wrapped, brightly-colored paper folded about it in ways that let the wind pass through as easily as Lianhualou's walls once had. Before Fang Duobing with his endlessly clever mechanic's hands and Di Feisheing and his boundless strength and stubborn good will had inexorably mended what had once been so haphazardly done. This package showed none of that care, none of that attention to detail, left sitting on the kitchen table for Li LIanhua to find as if its giver couldn't be done with the thing quickly enough.
A warm hand landed on the small of his back, the bright staccato of an excited voice breathless in his ear belied that impression almost immediately thereafter. "Aren't you going to open it?"
Li Lianhua rolled his eyes sideways to find Fang Duobing's gaze fixed on him, a wide smile on his face as he all but bounced in place beside him. Li Lianhua turned his eyes back to the gift, sighing softly as he said, "What on Earth is it for?"
The warm hand left his back as Fang Duobing reached out to grab the package and dump it in his hands. Half the wrapping paper fell to the floor. "Happy birthday!"
Shaking his head, Li Lianhua shifted the package between his hands, the weight and warmth of it comforting, though he had no idea what it was. "Xiabao, it isn't my birthday."
Fang Duobing gave him a nudge until he sat down at the table, package in hand and motioned him to open it. "Well, it could be, for all you know. So stop fussing and open your gift." As Li Lianhua finally started pulling the paper apart, Fang Duobing loomed over him, watching him like a hawk waiting for the right moment to strike. Sure enough, the moment the last of the paper fell away, Fang Duobing reached forward and pulled the gift from Li LIanhua's hands to hold it up to its full size.
A blanket.
A warm, thick blanket, the likes of which were common in Tianji Hall and had been at Sigumen but that Li LIanhua had never been able to afford for Lianhualou. It was easily large enough to cover three. He rose and reached out a hand to run down the front of it. It was even softer than it looked.
Another hand came to rest at the hollow of his waist, its owner's warmth pressing lightly along his entire back. With Di Feisheng behind him and Fang Duobing waiting eagerly in front of him, a flutter started in his stomach, then moved to beat against the inside of his ribs in a way that left him shaking. Fang Duobing stepped closer, half wrapping the blanket around him as he pressed their foreheads together. Smiling, he said simply, "I'm glad you like it."

There was just something very beautiful about how Fang Duobing was the defacto protector of the two strongest martial artists in the world purely because he was the only one that was not ill.
#especially given his childhood#fang duobing#I wanted more of him protecting the other two...#there wasn't enough of it *pout*#and then them protecting him eventually when back at full strength#I mean they did already do a lot of rescue scenes in the show but I am insatiable XD#I want moar!#Moar last minute rescues!!!#Moar fighting people off because the other two are in danger#and especially the dramatic irony with essentially the weakest of the three being the defender because of circumstances#lotus trio#mysterious lotus casebook

WIP Wednesday
It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another excerpt from my Mysterious Lotus Casebook longfic!
This week, enjoy Fang Duobing trying to get Di Feisheng to take care of himself by explaining how it will help Li Lianhua take care of himself. (AKA. FDB's Caretaking 101 for DFS). (You can find earlier excerpts here.)
**
Fang Duobing sniffled, picked up the cloth once more, and got to work. At least the cabinet was almost blood-free. Only one stain left.
“What did you mean about Xiangyi and help?” a-Fei asked on Fang Duobing’s third pass over the stain.
Fang Duobing’s hands stopped mid-scrub. Did a-Fei even have any caretaking experience? Either giving or receiving? Or had he just always used qi to heal everything, so recuperation was never an issue? Starting from the most basic level and working up to the question was probably the best move.
He started scrubbing the stain again, willing his hands and voice to be steady. “Li Lianhua will need rest, right? And sleep, and food, and medicine.”
“Obviously. He’s healing.”
Well, at least a-Fei knew that much.
“It took me a decade to recover from my duel with Xiangyi, Duobing,” a-Fei said, his tone as dry as the basin was wet. “I’m familiar with the process.”
A decade? So he really had been in seclusion all that time. Wait–Li Lianhua had injured him that badly and he wanted another duel? How did that make any sense? He mentally shook himself and tried to find the thread of the conversation again before he could spiral off in a different direction. “Alright. I’m assuming the Medicine Demon or someone was overseeing your healing. Did you actually follow his orders?”
“Of course,” a-Fei said, as though he were the sort of person to take orders from anyone.
He was kidding, wasn’t he? Fang Duobing craned his head over his shoulder to take a look. No annoyingly attractive smirk or eyebrow raised in challenge in sight. Huh. He’d try to make sense of that later. “Well . . . good for you,” he said, facing forward again. “Li Lianhua won’t. He wouldn’t even before the situation with his shiniang. It’s not only giving away qi he couldn’t spare to heal people. He tries to squirm his way out of receiving help all the time, and always pushes himself too far, long past any reasonable limit.” Sound like anyone else you know, a-Fei? “I don’t think he knows how to do things any other way. So instead of accidentally encouraging him to hurt himself, what if we do the opposite? Practice accepting help, even if we don’t need it to survive, so he feels less guilty about needing it?”
Silence. He forced himself to keep scrubbing and wait. If a-Fei needed time, then that’s what he’d give him.
“What are you suggesting?” a-Fei asked at last.
Fang Duobing blinked at the cloth in his hand. “Um,” he said, frantically casting around for something to follow it, as all his ideas fled. “It doesn’t need to be anything big. Simple things count. For instance, you could ask me to hand you something if it’s nearer to me. Or tell me to go away when you need alone time. And I could ask you to make me medicine if I wasn’t feeling well. Or meditate when we’re low on qi, sleep when we’re worn out. That sort of thing.” He winced internally. No wonder his Niang liked to say he was as transparent as water.
Well, since he’d come this far, he might as well commit. “All I’m saying is that it might help Li Lianhua as well as yourself if you don’t try to push yourself to your absolute limit. Just because you can doesn’t mean you have to. Or that you should. And you don’t need to, because I’m here. And you shouldn’t if you don’t want Li Lianhua to think he needs to do the same thing. He deserves to rest. And if we can show him what that looks like, then isn’t that the responsible thing to do?”
A-Fei made a faint hum that could have meant anything from ‘excellent point, Xiaobao’ to ‘I think you’re an idiot.’
Who was he kidding? It was probably the latter.
Fang Duobing squeezed the handkerchief over the bowl. The water turned purple as the paint and blood mixed together. He waited.
No new sounds from a-Fei. Just the whisper of his fingers through Huli Jing’s fur.
Fang Duobing swallowed back a sigh. At least he’d tried. “I’m going to go dump this,” he said, standing up. “I’ll be back soon.” He started for the door.
“Wait.”
Fang Duobing stilled. “What?”
A-Fei stared at him for a long moment, something complicated lurking under his almost neutral expression. “Clean the blood off your face first,” he said at last.
“Oh. Good point.” He dug out his own handkerchief from his robe–the other one had splinters in it now–dunked it, and wiped it across his cheek. “Better?”
“Almost,” a-Fei said, pointing to a spot near his temple and another across his forehead.
Fang Duobing wiped wherever a-Fei pointed until he finally nodded his approval. “Thanks.” He was about to leave, but then the candlelight hit a-Fei’s cheekbone in exactly the right way to make the teartrack from earlier glisten. Of course a-Fei hadn’t taken the time to clean up, either. “Did you want to–”
A-Fei shook his head.
So much for acknowledging limits or asking for help. “Right. Never mind.” He left without waiting for a response.
