There are movies that change the landscape of film forever upon release.  The Jazz Singer introduced synchronized sound to the world of film.  Citizen Kane pioneered new techniques in terms of cinematography and non-linear storytelling.  Nobody was quite prepared, however, for the phenomenon that was Jaws and the unprecedented impact it had on popular culture and the box office.

The premise of Jaws, directed by Steven Speilberg and based on a novel by Peter Benchley, is simple.  The town of Amity is a summer retreat for natives of the East Coast, and the town’s economy relies on its beaches to sustain its economy.  New chief of police Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), however, is forced to face a difficult decision when a local woman is attacked by a shark.  At the behest of the town and its officials, Brody urges that the beaches be closed and the shark captured, and his wishes are not granted until several more attacks occur.  Once the beaches are finally closed, Brody sets out to capture and kill the shark with the help of oceanographer Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and the iconic sea captain Quint (Robert Shaw).

Despite its simple premise, the film was a box office smash in the summer of 1975, and was so effective in its horror sensibility that it spurned a very real reaction of people being afraid to go in the water for years after its release.  The film also served as a bridge between the old Hollywood sensibility and storytelling and the new Hollywood vanguard inspired by foreign and independent films.  The result was a film that became the highest grossing (at the time), a critical and audience success, and an award winner for its iconic score and near-flawless editing.

It is this editing, truly, that gives this film the die-hard sense of suspense and terror that works so well.  From the beginning, we are given the perspective of the shark, our non-traditional antagonist.  It is not until nearly an hour in the film that you see anything more than the fin of the shark, and there really is never a clear moment that you can see the entirety of it without the aid of a pause button.  Prior to ever seeing the shark, you are given different situations to show it’s nature and strength : the way that it attacks the woman at the beginning of the film, thrashing her about helplessly; the way it drags the pier that it severed from the dock effortlessly through the water; the numerous barrels that Quint manages to attach to it that are still unable to keep it near the surface.

Perhaps done out of necessity, as the film had a historically difficult production mostly due to issues with the mechanical used, what we get instead is the terror of a ghost story, but transposed onto something that is much more likely to occur in our experience.  Therefore, that feeling of not being able to see the danger until it is too late hangs with us throughout the film, especially when the shark is not present.  This is amplified by the aforementioned John Williams score, one of the most effective exercises in audio minimalism to date.

The cast of this film is anchored by one of the strongest main threes committed to film.  Scheider’s portrayal of Brody encapsulates the fear of fatherhood, the frustration that comes with an inability to control a situation despite your title and the power implied, and the horror of discovering that your enemy is much more powerful than anticipated.  Dreyfuss finds a way to bring his usual sense of enthusiasm and natural humor to the screen while still being validating as someone familiar with the ways of the sea.  Shaw left it all on the reel with this role... the archetype that has been born out of the character of Quint (itself a callback to heroes of the John Ford era of film) has gone on to shape many a character that has followed.  Murray Hamilton serves his purpose well as secondary antagonist Mayor Larry Vaughn, and the plethora of colorful characters (including other cast members and extras from the Martha’s Vineyard area) round out the deeply immersive experience.

Plain and simple, there is no reason why any lover of film should not see Jaws.  Not only will you be treated to one of the best movies of the last 50 years, a world of references to it from other films will suddenly make much more sense.  This was a film that changed the language of the blockbuster and the way that films are taken in by the general public, and you owe it to yourself to see it when given the chance.
