IIHM KOLKATA ORGANIZED AND DISTRIBUTED THE AWARD ON THE OCCASION OF IHD 26TH APRIL 2022
On April 26 National Hospitality Day honors the hardworking service sector employees who work relentlessly to provide the best in comfort and luxury. The hospitality sector is frequently mistaken for the hotel industry, which is not the case. The former is a subset of the latter. Hotels, restaurants, bars, theme parks, tourism, and other businesses are all part of the hospitality industry. These businesses’ presentation, originality, entertainment, and excellence are all down to their hospitality staff, that is why we are honoring them today!
International Hospitality Day celebrated on April 26th. The International Hospitality Council (IHC), London, and hospitality evangelist Dr Suborno Bose. On April 2, 2016, International Hospitality Day was founded by the Chief Mentor of the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) and CEO and Convenor of the IHC, London, to honor and appreciate this part of human nature. The idea was to devote one day a year to the hospitality industry in order to celebrate, market, and educate.
The International Hospitality Day commemoration began with a global event attended by international members of the International Hospitality Council. Prof. David Foskett, MBE, Chairman of the International Hospitality Council (IHC), presented an inspiring message to all those involved in the hospitality industry to kick off the global celebration.
On the International Hospitality Day, the International Hospitality Council (IHC) in collaboration with the International Institute of Hotel Management Kolkata (IIHM) recognised the enormous contributions of hospitality and culinary experts from around the world.
The International Institute of Hospitality Management (IIHM) inducted Alistair Birt, John Wood, Lord Karan Bilimoria, and Sarah Hartnett into the Hall of Fame.
David Foskett, MBE — a member of the Academy of Culinary Arts and the Craft Guild of Chefs — began the convocation ceremony by introducing the award achiever to people. And Dr suborno bose also complimented the awardees.
Among the hospitality professionals who have received the IIHM Fellow status are:
● Alistair Birt- recognised as one of the most promising young British chocolatiers. He was the Executive Chef of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, where he was in charge of 37 restaurants and 500 chefs. In 2007, John co-founded Kitchen CUT, a company that provides management solutions to restaurant owners. The tools were created by John himself. He was awarded the IHC Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.
● Lord Karan Bilimoria- who founded Cobra Beer, is the Chairman of Cobra Beer Partnership Limited, a joint venture with Molson Coors, and Chairman of Molson Coors Cobra India. The Cobra range has received 121 Gold and Grand Gold medals in the Monde Selection, one of the most prestigious quality awards in the world for beer, since 2001, making it one of the most decorated beers in the world. Cork has a fascination for all things pastry since she was a child when she worked her first summer job at the legendary Ballymaloe House under the teaching and watchful supervision of culinary maestro Myrtle Allen. Sarah first developed an appreciation and regard for fresh food, quality ingredients, and painstaking preparation at this renowned cookery retreat, which is still very much at the core of what she does today. She was awarded the IHC Entrepreneur Of The Year Award. The primary goal of the IIHM International College of Distinguished Fellows is to actively establish and support the student and academic communities in a variety of ways. UK’s new visa rules will help to attract Indian students
Lord Karan Bilimoria, Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, talks about the India-UK ties to promote the growth of education and research
During his visit for the 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay, Lord Karan Bilimoria, Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, spoke to Education Times. He is the seventh Chancellor of the University and the first Indian-born Chancellor of a Russell Group University in Great Britain. Lord Bilimoria qualified as a Chartered Accountant and graduated in Law from the University of Cambridge. As the founding Chairman of the UK study abroad agency in Kochi-India Business Council, he wants to encourage partnership across India to deliver impact in areas such as surgical hygiene, environmental pollution, sustainable cooling and applied sports science. Tell us about the University of Birmingham’s partnership with Queen’s Baton Relay 2022. The University of Birmingham is a Russell Group (the UK’s equivalent of the Ivy League) and ranked in the top 100 in the world and is a civic university with a global outlook and deep Common wealth connections, particularly in India, where we work with Indian partners to deliver research impact. Sport is a unifying force and, as an official partner of the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay, we can demonstrate how the University is working in partnership to resolve key issues affecting people in India and improve the lives of the country’s citizens. We are strengthening and celebrating our connections with partners, friends and alumni across the Common wealth, as the baton travels through 72 territories.
How will the India-UK partnership enhance the growth of education and research?
Through our India Institute, we partner across India to deliver impact in areas such as surgical hygiene, environmental pollution, sustainable cooling and applied sports science. We currently have over 40 joint research projects and partnerships in India, in critical areas such as women’s cancer; drinking water; air pollution; antimicrobial resistance; clean cooling technology; global surgery; railways; cell biology and autophagy; genomics; sustainable energy; and sports performance.
For example, without intervention, cold-chain emissions in India could double by 2027, but Professor Toby Peters and the Centre for Sustainable Cooling team have secured UK Government funding to replicate the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold Chain (ACES) ‘hub and spoke’ cooling expertise template to India. Professor Francis Pope, who advised on the baton’s air pollution sensor technology, leads the ASAAP India (A Systems Approach to Air Pollution India) project with Population Council and IIT Delhi studying the impact of particulate matter (PM) air pollution on the health of pavement dwellers. Our education partnerships with leading private institutions like Amity, Manipal, OP Jindal and Chitkara enable students to study for part of their UG programme with the Indian partner institution before progressing to the University of Birmingham.
What are the new strategies introduced by the UK and its universities for aspiring Indian students and researchers?
Through our India Institute launched in 2018, we are committed to our partnership approach in addressing India’s societal challenges. We are working towards raising the profile of women in leadership and research – in India. We are launching a new visiting Fellows scheme that will enable early career researchers to work with our leading academics on areas such as maternal health, Global surgery, sustainable cities and sustainable cool energy. We are also initiating new women in research Fellowships and have extended our Commonwealth scholarships so that students joining us for a master’s degree in 2022 will receive a £3,000 award. The University received three groups of Sports Authority of India (SAI) sports scientists and coaches on short programmes around sports science, coaching and strength and conditioning during 2016 and 2017. Dr Martin Toms is editing the first “Handbook of Sports Science in India” with colleagues from SAI. Additionally, there are several undergraduate and postgraduate students studying sports science and physiotherapy at the university.
Will relaxation of visa requirements for Indian students encourage them to opt for the UK?
Most definitely. As a member of the House of Lords and Co-Chair of the International Students All-Party Parliamentary Group, I am proud to have played an instrumental role in helping to secure the new graduate visa – enabling Indian students to spend up to two years working in the UK after their studies (3 years for PhDs). The new visa will help to attract Indian students to the UK, but what will motivate them is the opportunity to experience academic and student life in Britain. Our teaching staff integrate their latest research findings into study programmes, meaning students receive a cutting-edge educational experience.
Will the increased mobility between India and the UK boost the economy?
Alongside my role as Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, I am also President of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Trade and mobility are intrinsically interconnected. Business’ ability to move people across borders is crucial to expand their pool of talent, drive productivity and go global. The 1.5 million strong Indian diaspora is the largest ethnic minority community in the UK making a huge contribution on all fronts and reaching the very top in virtually every field. Education mobility is important in supporting trade links and strengthening the bonds between our countries. The University’s relationship with India dates back to 1909 when our first cohort of Indian students arrived in Birmingham to study for degrees in Mining and Commerce. We now have more than 2,000 Indian alumni and some of India’s most distinguished and finest minds were educated at Birmingham, including Ajit Kumar Seth, 30th Cabinet Secretary of the Republic of India, and acclaimed writer and critic, the late UR Ananthamurthy. I have seen the value of education mobility at first hand with my grandfather, mother and uncle all graduating from the University of Birmingham in the 1930s, 50s, and 60s respectively. This is no one-way street – the flow in both directions of educational experience and collateral creates greater connectivity between nations and cultures. The free trade agreement negotiations launched between the UK and India will, undoubtedly, be one of the most important trade agreements for the UK.

India’s proposal to host Common Wealth Games shooting, archery events backed by UK House of Lords
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/indias-proposal-to-host-common-wealth-games-shooting-archery-events-backed-by-uk-house-of-lords/
India’s proposal to host Common Wealth Games shooting, archery events backed by UK House of Lords
India’s proposal to host the additional shooting and archery events for the 2022 Commonwealth Games has been endorsed by the British House of Lords after an extensive debate.
Last month, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had withdrawn its threat to boycott the Birmingham Commonwealth Games over shooting’s omission and instead decided to submit a formal proposal to host a shooting championship, where the medals won will be counted in the tally of the Games.
The proposal was backed by the UK’s House of Lords.
“The government welcomes the Indian Olympic Associations statement on confirming that India will take part in the games,” Baroness Diana Barran, the parliamentary under Secretary of State for digital, culture, media and sport, said in her summation address.
“The government also welcomes the proposal from India to the CGF for additional events in the sports of shooting and Archery and the CGF is currently discussing this proposal with its membership and following this will inform India of its decision,” she added.
When asked if she could confirm that the government would ensure that in future versions shooting would be made a compulsory sport at the CWG instead of an optional one, she said she will pass on the matter to the minister of sports in the House of Commons.
She also said that the minister of sports in the House of Commons is simultaneously “meeting with the CGF discussing that very point and all of the costs for that event shall be met by the Indian Olympic association.”
House member Lord Karan Bilimoria described the proposal “as a manifestation of a member of the commonwealth family coming forward as a member of the family to assist in providing a solution to the issue of shooting and archery being proposed to be held in Delhi or Chandigarh.”
He also congratulated sports minister Kiren Rijiju, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra and National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) chief Raninder Singh for offering an “innovative solution“.
In a letter to the CGF President Dame Louis Martin, Batra said the cost of the shooting’s conduct will be met largely by the NRAI while the archery programme will likely be funded solely by the Government of India.
