How Much Territory Are the Fallout Player Characters Actually Micromanaging: An Analysis

I did some amateur research to figure out which of the Fallout protagonists (specifically 3, NV, and 4) have a reasonable area of land to constantly traverse. I used Apple Maps to find the straightest possible walking path from a point on either end of the game map, then multiplied the north-south and east-west figures to get an approximate square mileage. Since none of the walking paths were completely straight, these numbers will all be a little higher than actual. BUT the game maps also don’t completely correlate to the real-life locations, so consider these numbers to be estimates.

The Commonwealth: Around 600 square miles. This is honestly pretty manageable, especially if you’re teleporting or helicoptering all over the place. It would be exhausting, but you could theoretically get across the map in a day with time to spare for questing.

The Capital Wasteland: Around 800 square miles. Fairfax is the halfway point; very few locations on the western half of the map actually correspond to anything in real life. The exception is the cavern Little Lamplight is based on, which would make the game map 100 miles long. The map definitely doesn’t extend that far into Virginia.

New Vegas: Kind of hard to calculate at this scale, but we’re looking at a little under 3000 square miles! Through. the Mojave. Desert. The Courier is really going to have to commit to a course of action before traveling, because they won’t be coming back for about a week.

If you’re a fanfic writer, remember that you don’t owe realism to anyone. BUT, if realism is something you care about for your writing, keep these distances in mind!

I commissioned @newbordeaux (@arthmis) to paint my Lone Wanderer/Courier Six Sam and I am sooo so happy with the results. She used my 10 face claim inspos and all of my ideas and put them together so wonderfully 🥹 Her commissions are closed but when/if she opens them again, I HIGHLY recommend.

Lone Wanderer: Axel Nessley

Age: 19

Gender: nonbinary (they/them)

Sexuality: queer (hasn't figured it all out yet, but they know they like boys)

Companion(s) of choice: Butch DeLoria <3

Weapon(s) of choice: Lead pipe and 10mm pistol

Courier 6: Jesse Elliot Ruthford

They get ghoulified after they successfully activate the purifier, I have doodles of that I'll post later.

Age: 26

Gender: trans man (he/him)

Sexuality: pan demiromantic

Companion(s) of choice: Arcade and Rex. Sometimes Boone or Veronica and ED-E.

Weapon(s) of choice: ratslayer, revolver, and Oh Baby!

He genuinely doesn't remember anything past first obtaining the platinum chip and even then that exchange is foggy. He's not too worried about getting them back either as long as he's still aim is still straight.

Gender: transmasc (he/they)

Sole Survivor: Fletcher Melbun

Age: 32

Sexuality: bisexual (male leaning preference)

Companion(s) of choice: Nick Valentine, Hancock, and Dogmeat

Weapon(s) of choice: modified combat rifle, molotovs, .50 hardened sniper rifle, serated switchblade

Has been going through a nonstop gauntlet since he left the vault. Long story short: he sobbed when he found Codsworth, he sobbed when he managed to make his way back to Valentine's office, and he sobbed anytime his Pip-Boy map would glitch out. Despite this, not a pushover. Don't test him.

Age: 23 (at time of ghoulification), now? They'll never tell.

My ghoul oc: Warren "Renny" Knewman

Gender: Won't tell anyone to keep them on their toes, but genderfluid (any pronouns)

Sexuality: asexual biromantic

Specific game origin: he could be applied to any title tbf, but I mostly imagine her in Fallout 4.

Weapon(s) of choice: sawed off shotgun, laser pistol, baseball bat

Just kinda hangs around, you could find her pretty much anywhere with a terminal and/or a surface to sleep on. When he's in the commonwealth, he likes hacking Diamond City’s turrets for fun when there's nothing too serious going on. Either that or they're camped out in Goodneighbor.

Courier Six: *fixes some radio equipment*

*skips initiate and knight, immediately becomes paladin*

The Lone Wanderer: *finds the super mutants’ origin point**blows up the Enclave’s home base and kills their omnicidal president**saves the sentinel by taking a lethal blast of radiation, purifying the wasteland in the process*

*gets promoted to knight*

it was a long time… (but it could have been a little faster if the browser version of the site hadn't slowed down when posting things). so we have here a dramatic simp (sosu), a lost teddybear (lone) and literaly the WORST (courier)
