O Museu de Londres conta a história da cidade dos tempos pré-históricos aos modernos. Suas coleções tem uma grande variedade de artefatos: de arqueologia a vestuário, passando por estátuas de mármore e pinturas. Além disso, o museu contém uma grande coleção de história urbana. Como sempre, gravitei para a área de história medieval que achei bem interessante com artefatos que remontavam aos Plantagenetas (a primeira grande dinastia) e aos Tudors. 

O Museu de Londres também tem um canal muito interessante no You Tube com atualizações frequentes que permitem uma visita não só ao que o museu expõe, mas ao que acontecem por trás da exposição, como a conservação de artefatos. Possuí também vídeos com animações que falam sobre personagens que tem a história contada no museu. O link do canal está aqui.

A UK museum’s signing over of its collection of objects looted from the Kingdom of Benin is “a really great day”, the head of Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments has told the BBC. The Horniman Museum in south-east London is returning 72 items, including so-called Benin Bronzes, to Nigerian ownership – making it the first in the UK to officially take such action on this…

Rio de Janiero, Brazil, circa 1875. Rio de Janeiro was a centre for feather working in the 19th century. Typical products include floral decorations made from feathers, and fixed fans.

The late, and much missed Geoff Egan, Museum of London Department of Urban Archaeology finds specialist. He put in many hours for free advising Thames Mudlarks before they became fashionable and before (perhaps he was the inspiration for) the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Editor of Post-medieval Archaeology and christened Geoffo Badgerbeard  . BTW 2025 will see a Mudlarks exhibition at the London Museum Docklands. Look out for it

Sailor's Slops

1600s-1700s

Extremely rare survival of a shirt and breeches, called slops, as worn by sailors from the late 16th through to the 18th centuries. This unique set of loose, practical sailor’s clothing reveals life aboard ship. They are made of very strong linen to endure the hard, rough work. There is tar across the front from hauling ropes. The breeches are heavily mended and patched, which the sailor would have done himself.

London Museum Returns Looted Benin Artefacts to Nigeria

Spencer House, London

The Painted Room is renowned for being one of the first neoclassical interiors in Europe, decorated with exquisite wall paintings inspired by contemporary excavations of the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is furnished with its original set of armchairs and sofas designed for the room by James "Athenian" Stuart.

This Painted Room was conceived around 1759 and completed in 1765. It served as a drawing room and probably also during large receptions.
