It’s a rare and beautiful experience when we have parents come into our showroom, encouraging their children to eliminate #logkyakahenge from their minds and their hearts. Parents teaching their children to think and be free. Some might find it cheesy, but I really feel like our wedding outfits are an outward expression of where we as individuals are at on our journey. Are we “expressing THEIR inner voice” or are we “expressing OUR inner voice”? The freedom to make our own decisions with a clear and open mind, is a freedom that so many of us had to TAKE and figure out on our own, as it was not gifted to us. That was hard work. The even harder work once we achieve that, is to forgive, move forward and then break the cycle, so that we do not put the same fear based mindset on our next gen. Being a brown kid growing up in Jamaica Queens New York City to Caribbean parents wasn't easy. Coming from a culture that does not believe that LGBTQ folks are born the way they are wasn't easy. Growing up in a culture that believed in honor killings, believed that it was a "preference" and believed that you were an "abomination" was not easy. The constant blaring of homophobia from West Indian "pop culture" with slurs like - botty boy, bulla man, and chi chi man kept me in a state of fear for a future that wasn't shaping up to be easy. I can look back on it all and understand why I had to go through it all to get to where I am today but if I were to ask 5 year old me; the me that bought the rag doll for $5 at the summer camp "yard sale", the me that was so excited to own my first doll and the me that had it thrown away in the trash twice when discovered, the second time it was submerged in the food that was thrown in top of it to keep me from taking it out again.... If I were to ask that 5 year old me if this was a life I would ever choose, my answer would be no. In all honestly, the trauma, the turmoil, the extreme dysphoria, yall could have kept that but I wouldn't be me without that. It's these battle wounds that have shaped me, allowed me to understand the human condition and have allowed me to become the advocate I am today. For that if I were to ask my adult self if I would choose this life, I would say, I wouldn't have it any other way. When I was young, I would pray for an easy life. I would pray for an easy transition but in reality I should have been praying for the strength to endure a hard one. I road wasn't easy but I wouldn't be be if it were.
