Castle Tioram, Loch Moidart.
The ruins of Castle Tioram stand on the tidal island of Eilean Tioram near the point at which the River Shiel flows into Loch Moidart. Castle Tioram is pronounced „Cheerum“ as far as I know.
The castle was the traditional home of the MacDonalds of Clanranald. Castle Tioram was built in the early 13th century on a rock on the tidal island. It is very possible that there was a much older fortress before but the castle was mentioned for the first time in 1372.
Castle Tioram was recorded as being in a poor condition when occupied by a garrison of government troops during the 1715 Jacobite uprising. It was recaptured by Allan of Moidart, who then, it is said, set fire to it to prevent its future use, before departing to meet his death at the Battle of Sheriffmuir.

Day Forty-nine
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seven weeks in!
Up this morning to strike camp from beneath a lovely fallen but still growing oak tree and a soft bed of leaves, first up is lugging the gear back to the road and getting underway.
Around the corner it's a right turn off the busy A road finally at Lochailort and the road sweeps downhill over the River Ailort and begins a long ride around thebsouth side of Loch Ailort.
It's some lovely going on this initial stretch, with some mild climbs and a great view across the water, with craggy cliffs rising to the side of the road.
Around the corner the road passes through the nice little bay at Glenuig, and the strikes south heading into the hills for some stiff climbs through the trees.
After some heavy work the route finally starts to descend and leads into a beautiful valley with a very fun ride down past the mountains through Kinlochmoidart.
Over the river Moidart and the climbs begin again, with a road that initially is so up-and-down that it almost looks as if it's warped. It's a long tough slog uphill before finally beginning another long downhill through the leafy hills down to the River Shiel.
We have a gentle ride through Acharacle which is pretty enough that it calls for a stop for lunch to take in the quiet views here, before heading back up the hills and on to Salen.
With a beautiful view over Loch Sunart, I take the turnoff to the west and begin a long, grindy 25 mile stretch out to the end of this peninsula. It's going to mean riding all the way back again, but there's a payoff at the end.
The road starts out following a nice line around the waterside, before leading in to a series of climb after climb, which make for some really heavy going.
A ways in and the road begins ascending in earnest, with narrow roads and sharp gradients making for challenging going despite the great views over the water.
Past Ardslignish and its beautiful bay, the road continues its ascent around the volcanic hills, and as the road twists through the gap in the hills a mighty headwind begins to kick in.
Around the pass I encounter a couple of cyclists coming the other direction. They assure me it's all downhill after here.
They lied.
A bit more grindy climbing into the wind and a bite to eat and there is a good 3 mile undulating descent down into Kilchoan, before the route turns off and it's back into some stiff climbs once more.
Out through the moorlands and around a corner and finally I spy the destination for today rising between the hills.
A little further round and we hit Ardnamurchan Lighthouse! With Skye's hills visible behind it in the distance, it's a beautiful sight.
And just along the coast is another major milestone this journey - Corrachadh Mòr, the most westerly point of Great Britain! Three down, one to go!
With that, evening is well underway, and despite the sun shining, there is a good bit of windchill, so time to find a spot to hole up for the night.
TTFN!

I'm sorry, I'm really late to your spectacular sleuthing, so ignore this if you already know because I wouldn't be surprised if you do, but just to add-
Tumblr media
Book 1 is Words on Calm by Helen Exley, 1998.
Tumblr media
Book 2 is The Earth from the Air 365 Days by Thames & Hudson, 2003. Can't quite tell the edition but I think it's most likely this one?
Tumblr media
Also, unnecessary info that gives us nothing, but the art people put on their walls always intrigues me because it's a choice:
I'm pretty sure this is St Ives in Cornwall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And almost sure that this is Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness:
EDIT - It's not Urquart, its most definitely Castle Tioram sitting at the entrance to Loch Moidart.

Behold, I bring you the (I think) fourth edition of:

We all have a cluttered coffee table somewhere. This one has:
A big black box with a flower?
THE OLDEST…something
THE ENGLISH DOG at Home
Field Guild to the Birds of Britain and Europe is the one that’s upside down
More books and papers
An Apple laptop
Rocks?
Tumblr media
A cosy doggo bed which she got at an engagement a few months back, with what looks to be a cosy doggo inside!
Tumblr media
A little greyhound statue! I know Anne had a lurcher in the 80s, so maybe that’s him?
A photo of either Anne or Zara on a horse above the telly next to a vase
A Sky box?
More papers
Tumblr media
A painting of a lighthouse of course
A photo of Zara’s christening
Peter and Zara as babies 🥰
MORE VASES
Tumblr media
A LOT to unpack:
Too many little bits and bobs to see on the shelves
Two Stacks™️ of books balancing on a little table
A photo of what could be Britannia where she’s clearly gone ‘Fuck it’ and placed it on top of the Two Stacks™️ of books
Another table in front of that one with more clutter
No idea what the fluffy grey thing is
No idea what the brown mini-pallet-looking thing is
A Spyglass? Next to the door?
Tumblr media
One of the kids when they were small with the other one or a dog I can’t tell 😂
Can’t make out the other one obscured by the lamp stand
Tim’s arm
Tumblr media
A photo of Peter when he was small from the same set as the one with Zara
No idea! The kids again? Or the Annelets?
The third one is cut out, but it looks like a child in a school uniform? Or a sports kit? Maybe Peter but the hair looks darker.
MORE KNICK KNACKS
Tumblr media
Anne’s iPad
Papers (she was probably working and watching at the same time knowing her)
I’m not sure if that’s a photo of one of the Royal residences on a cushion? Am I seeing things?
Anne sitting on a bubbly-looking cushion

397pm Castle Tioram and Silver Walk
397pm Castle Tioram and Silver Walk
Time to leave Castle Tioram and complete my circular walk – well, my figure of 8 walk, to be totally accurate. I climb down off the rocks, shrug my rucksack onto my shoulders, and set off across the causeway.

Prince Charles Edward Stuart, landed in Eriskay with his “Seven men of Moidart" on 23rd July 1745.
The Seven Men of Moidart consisted of four Irishmen, two Scots and one Englishman. Three of the group were elderly men, Sir Thomas Sheridan (the Prince’s under-governor/tutor and a veteran cavalry officer), Sir John MacDonald (a former French cavalry officer) and the Scot William Murray (Marquis of Tullibardine). These were accompanied by the Irish Colonel, John William O’ Sullivan (French army) and Irish Episcopalian clergyman, Reverend George Kelly, the Englishman, Francis Strickland ( a former royal tutor), as well the Scot, Aeneas MacDonald ( a Paris banker).
Having lost their arms and ammunition, as I told you in my post about the encounter with a british ship enroute, his companions besought the Prince to return to Nantes, but he refused and after a chase by a British man-of-war, La Doutelle anchored off the island of Eriskay, in the Outer Hebrides, on 2nd August, 1745. An eagle hovered round the ship, and Tullibardine exclaimed "Here is the king of birds come to welcome your Royal Highness to Scotland."
Clanranald to whom the cluster of islands belonged, was on the mainland. Charles proceeded, and entered the bay of Loch-nan-nuah between Moidart and Arisaig. Here Clanranald, Kinloch Moidart, and several of their clansmen came on board. But to the Prince's pleas, they answered that to take up arms without concert or support from France could only end in ruin. After a long interview and a personal appeal to young Kinloch Moidart, the brother of the chief, Charles at length prevailed, perhaps shoeing the charm if the man the Government labelled, The Young Pretender.
The pics include two memorial cairns on the island.

Many of you will undoubtedly have stopped at the Glenfinnan Monument on Loch Shiel, and stared all the way down that beautiful loch. But did you know you can cycle all the way along it, for 16 miles? I'll admit I had no idea, so yesterday I went for a pedal from Polloch at its southern end to see for myself. I got a little more than half way up the loch before I ran out of time and had to come back, but this was wonderfully remote countryside and the views across to Moidart were superb. :)
A word of warning if you drive over the hill from Strontian to Polloch though.....your clutch might never forgive you! ;-)
