Watched the Tonys on TV on the phone with Brigid. Liza was there with Halston, and she won for Best Singer in a Musical, and when they called her name Stevie Rubell jumped out of his seat next to Halston. Liza was running against Eartha Kitt in Timbuktu and Madeline Kahn in Twentieth Century.
Catherine called and said that Steve Aronson came over to her house the night before—the lady he was going to visit in Southampton wouldn’t let him bring his big dog so he didn’t go at all—so he and Catherine were both depressed together. Catherine is in love with Tom but doesn’t want to go out to Montauk and be a maid and Tom doesn’t want to be serious, and she once told me that she would never get serious about it but she is, so she was depressed. And Margaret Trudeau’s run off with Jack Nicholson or something. And we’re upset if there was a party for Liza and we weren’t invited. Yeah, I’m sure there was.

Meet “Humanimal” Liza Kahn, Who Inspires People to Make Compassionate Connections Each Day
As soon as visitors enter the “People Barn” at Farm Sanctuary’s Northern California Shelter, they find themselves in a place that inspires compassionate change. Here, guests can make the connections and get the information they may need to help them align their actions with their core values, such as kindness, care, and respect.
Among those at the helm of these efforts is Liza Kahn, whose warm, friendly face is the first one that her fellow “humanimals” see each day. And as she interacts with every volunteer, intern, and visitor she meets, Liza inspires those around her to excitedly greet the compassionate possibilities that lie ahead.
Farm Sanctuary is a place of rescue, rehabilitation, and refuge for more than 1,000 farm animals across our three sanctuary locations — and some people who’ve spent time at one of our shelters might say that Farm Sanctuary life has a way of offering these gifts to humans as well. Here, people may find refuge from systems that perpetuate unnecessary harm, and draw strength from our rescued residents’ incredible journeys and vibrant personalities. In many cases, these interactions have helped people to embrace choices and actions they can feel good about. And Liza — who began working as Farm Sanctuary’s Volunteer Program Coordinator last summer — is no exception.
“It feels great to work for an organization [whose] mission is completely aligned with my values,” she explains. “I get to show up to work every day feeling really good about the work that I’m doing.”
Liza devotes each day to helping people explore their relationships with farm animals and connecting them with the resources, experiences, and individuals they need to make a difference in ways that are meaningful to them. This direction stemmed from a desire to combat the injustices she observed in the world around her — and these days, she inspires others like her to make positive changes in pursuit of what they know to be right.
Tumblr media
Liza stands up for individuals like Jordan goat each day.
For Liza, working to help farm animals hits close to home.
“I grew up on a small beef cattle farm outside of Charlottesville, VA, and when I was about eight years old, I became a vegetarian,” she explains. “I was able to make the connection between the animals I cared for and loved to the food on my plate.” From an early age, she recognized that the animals we tend to revere — such as dogs and cats — are not really different from the animals most of us were taught to view as “food.”
Tumblr media
Liza hangs out with Felix, one of our resident New York Shelter cats.
In college, Liza studied health systems management at George Mason University and developed an interest in helping elder populations. After graduation, she worked with older adults in continuing-care retirement communities and home health cases, and later returned to school to complete her master’s degree in Senior Housing Administration.
“I learned so much working with older adults and see many parallels between how we treat our elders and how we treat farm animals,” she says.
This realization inspired Liza to reflect on the values she had held since childhood, and adjust her actions to better suit her growing awareness that all populations — no matter the species — contain individuals who may fail to receive the care and consideration they deserve. She felt that the best way to begin to stand up against the systems she opposed would be to investigate how she herself unwittingly perpetuated them and work from there. And when she realized that all farm animals raised for food or other commodities — and not just the ones slaughtered for meat — endured appalling conditions each day, she decided to embrace a vegan lifestyle as a practical step in bringing visibility to their struggles and working to overcome them.
As she started to delve into animal protection issues, she soon realized that serving this population was her true calling. So she began to thoroughly immerse herself, attending events and conferences to help her find her niche.
“I knew I wanted to commit my career to animal welfare, but wasn’t sure what that would look like,” Liza remembers. After attending an Animal Rights National Conference near her home in Washington, D.C., she learned about Farm Sanctuary and decided to apply for a shelter internship — an opportunity to care for these animals, and to work on behalf of countless others just like them.
“On December 1, 2015, I started my internship with Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY,” Liza recalls. “I stayed through February and it was the best decision of my life.” Here, Liza was proud to work on behalf of these animals whose protection she felt so strongly about. Further, she learned the type of lesson that can’t be taught in a classroom: that when we live our lives with intention and compassion, we may facilitate change in ways we never thought possible.
Tumblr media
Liza spent plenty of time with animal pals like Liam sheep during her internship last year.
Liza’s work at the sanctuary confirmed for her that helping farm animals was the right path. But she also realized that her background advocating for senior citizens could tie into this burgeoning passion.
Tumblr media
Liza with her buddy Jordan.
“Once my internship was completed I was given the opportunity to travel to the Northern California sanctuary for some temporary work,” she continues. “I thought — three months, no biggie.” Liza was to serve as our interim Orland, CA-based Volunteer Program Coordinator while we searched for someone to fill the position permanently. And while embracing the unknown — and on the other side of the country, no less — appeared daunting at first, she took it as an opportunity to explore a position that could expand upon her previous experiences: one where she could utilize her talents and passions to help even more individuals enjoy the peaceful lives that we all deserve.
“Once I got here I realized I could never leave — this place is amazing,” Liza exclaims. And fortunately, she didn’t have to. Liza fit into her new role so well that she was offered the opportunity to take it on full-time. And here, Liza realized that she had found what she had been searching for all along: an opportunity to connect individuals (animal and human alike) with the resources they need to live their best lives possible.
Now, nearly a year after completing her internship, Liza is helping people just like her achieve their own dreams, as she encourages the devoted volunteers, interns, and visitors she meets to spread compassion in ways that are right for them. One of her most beloved tasks is conducting intern orientations at the beginning of each month — a unique opportunity to get to know these remarkable individuals who dedicate their time and talents to making the world a better place for farm animals.
“I get to learn about what motivates and inspires these people,” Liza gushes. “I have the opportunity to watch them make connections that apply to their own personal story. I love learning about what the interns are moving towards and where they see themselves in the future. These brilliant and passionate interns give me so much hope for the future.”
When she’s not introducing new interns and volunteers to Farm Sanctuary life — and feeling inspired by them in return — Liza spends the majority of her time performing administrative tasks, checking in on our interns and volunteers, and helping people learn how they can support Farm Sanctuary’s lifesaving rescue, education, and advocacy work.
“A typical day for me is really, really fun,” she says. And while Liza spends much of her time in the office, she frequently checks in on some other individuals who inspire her — her beloved animal pals on the farm, who motivate her to be the best advocate she can be. “I always make sure to say hello (and squeeze) my farm animal friends on my lunch break,” Liza says. “It is absolutely one of the best perks of working at Farm Sanctuary.”
Tumblr media

During these breaks, Liza can most often be found chatting with the turkeys, her favorite species at the shelter. While she feels honored to work on behalf of all farm animals (and the people who love them), she’s taken a keen interest to her feathered friends.
“When I first started my internship last year, I had been around birds, had an appreciation for them, but no real connection. Through the internship I was able to see the beauty of all birds — especially turkeys,” she recalls. “They are so social and sweet, with very curious and unique personalities.” She loves to share the stories of our rescued turkey residents.
“My favorite day at Farm Sanctuary has to be the Celebration for the Turkeys,” she says. “Turkeys are my favorite farm animal and having a whole celebration dedicated to them makes me feel so happy. Events like this are a really great way to show off the farm and the staff. I am always so proud to introduce our caregivers and grounds team to new volunteers and interns. Our staff is very friendly and accommodating.”
Tumblr media
A young friend serves up one course from the turkeys’ delicious holiday meal during the 2016 Northern California Celebration for the Turkeys.
Of all of her beloved turkey friends, Rosie has stolen Liza’s heart the most.
“We have an agreement: Every time I’m in the turkey barn she gets a nice long turkey massage,” Liza says of her buddy. “With my hands under her wings, I am able to scratch that spot she can’t reach. She makes the sweetest little noises, fluffs out her feathers, and undeniably feels relaxed.”
Tumblr media
Rosie turkey, an incredible ambassador for her species and beloved friend.
Liza’s relationship with Rosie exemplifies the difference we all can make when we put compassion first, and value what all beings have to contribute to this beautiful world that we share. As she works each day to forge connections between people and farm animals, she demonstrates the power of kindness to make a difference for others who need our help. We are so thankful for all that Liza does to inspire compassionate connections, and we’re honored to have her on our team as we work to give a voice to the voiceless and show that each and every animal is truly someone, not something.

Everyone starts somewhere! Suitcase players are the equivalent of a cheap radio in the vinyl world - functional, but very lacking when compared to a good stereo. Suitcase players were actually targeted toward kids/teens back in the day, but they've made a comeback as a novelty item in recent years.
If your unit has an audio-out, you could probably take a first step by checking your local thrift shops for used speakers. I got lucky and found a pair with 10'' bass speakers for $40. However in the long run you will probably want to upgrade the player itself.
The quality of a vinyl also HEAVILY depends on the studio's mixer. Some of my collection has breathtaking quality, and others sound about the same as an mp3. "remastered" music is very controversial in the industry, look up "the loudness war" if you'd like to go on a deep dive as to why. That said - as one jewish person to another - you might be interested to know Daniel Kahn has some of his stuff out on vinyl.
The audiophile life isn't for everyone, but my friends and I often hang out at my house just to listen to music, so I consider it to be money well spent. (Though it absolutely isn't financially available to everyone, since a good player is typically $300+) One last piece of advice - you'll typically find better deals on the website 'discogs' rather than an auction site like ebay. <3
Ok so firstly @not-the-blue @justafictionlover where the fuck are there thrift stores in this city everything I know is in Jerusalem and even them it's literally all secondhand bookstores you're locals you should know
Secondly I appreciate the rec I guess but I'm very well known as a swiftie like I listen to pop music and pop adjacent music. We're talking pop rock (Paramore, Fall Out Boy) we're talking alt-pop (Liza Anne) we're talking indie pop (dodie, Tessa Violet) were talking classic pop (the Beatles) we're talking pop music babee* so like for the most part it's about the collecting aspect for me. I just love having physical copies of things and I keep seeing gorgeous unique editions of vinyls and not being able to buy them because what's the point without having a player but now I have a player so I'm going to start buying! Basically we're going to find out what I like listening to on vinyl because I haven't had a function CD player in years but I still buy CDs all the time
* I also listen to non pop and pop adjacent music, but in my heart I am pop girlie (gender neutral) all the way

While this may be a movie musical tournament, this blog is first and foremost dedicated to the stage, and I do what I want. So, welcome to another history lesson with DOA.
Despite both Angela Lansbury and Eartha Kitt having lasting and monumental careers on the Broadway stage, their many stints only ever overlapped for one brief moment in history.
In 1978, Eartha Kitt starred as Shaleem-La-Lume in Timbuktu! and was nominated for a Tony as Best Leading Actress in a Musical (alongside our beloved Madeline Kahn, Frances Sternhagen, and Liza Minnelli), but lost out to Liza's second Tony win. This was Eartha's first Tony nomination. The second would follow over two decades years later for The Wild Party. Timbuktu! from February 9th to September 10th.
In that time, the first revival of a little-known musical called The King and I was looking for a vacation replacement for Constance Towers (the only Anna Leonowens to not receive a Tony nomination, and in fact the entire production was overlooked that year). Who should come in for just three weeks? Angela Lansbury. Angela's performance was so lauded that she was nominated as a replacement for a Drama Desk for Outstanding Leading Actress in 1978. Angela had won previously for a revival of Gypsy, and would win the following year for Sweeney Todd.
Can you imagine living in a time where you could do a two-show day to see Eartha Kitt at the matinee and Angela Lansbury at the evening show?
Movie Musical Divas Tournament: Round 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Angela Lansbury (1925-2022): Em in The Harvey Girls (1946) | Eglantine Price in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) | Ruth in Pirates of Penzance (1983) | Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd (1982) | London Speciality in Till the Clouds Roll By (1946) | Mrs. Claus in Mrs. Santa Claus (1996)
"The patron saint of girls and young women labeled character actors at a young age, there are few people in the history of cinema who can claim a career as long and iconic as Angela Lansbury’s. Despite near constant sidelining and regularly being cast to play characters decades older than her, she managed to create a resume full of iconic characters and performances. In addition, she used her star power to advocate for AIDS research while it was still a taboo subject, as well as create roles for older actors to help them stay afloat." - anonymous
Eartha Kitt (1927-2008): New Faces (1954, Miss Kitt) | St Louis Blues (1958, Gogo Germaine)
"YES! Even though she faced bewildering amounts of Hollywood racism, the winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Women Tournament DID manage to do a couple of movie musicals: New Faces, a fluffy backstage-hijinks thing in which she plays her classic chanteuse persona and is even addressed as "Miss Kitt", and St Louis Blues, a musical biopic in which she sings alongside a bunch of other jazz greats. Neither of the films is considered a masterpiece, but Eartha is as scorchingly hot as always, and demonstrates that she could have become a legend in movie musicals if the roles had been there for her. In short, vote for Eartha Kitt because (1) she has JUST ENOUGH credits to count as a movie musical diva, (2) think of all the other Eartha Kitt movie musicals we COULD have had if not for racism, and (3) she's Eartha Kitt, certifiably the hottest old movie woman. Please and thank you." - anonymous
This is Round 4 of the Movie Musical Divas tournament. Additional polls in this round may be found by searching #mmround4, or by clicking the link below. Add your propaganda and support by reblogging this post.
ADDITIONAL PROPAGANDA AND MEDIA UNDER CUT: ALL POLLS HERE
Angela Lansbury:
"Because of Sondheim's continued insistance on making his musicals as accessibly viewable as possible, we have the glorious Sweeney Todd proshot that captures Angela Lansbury's career-defining performance as Mrs. Lovett. Many have followed. None of have baked a better pie." - anonymous
"Angela Lansbury lost the Emmy eighteen times. Don't let her lose again. She deserves this as one of our most beloved gay icons. She is happiness personified and the world is dimmer without her." - anonymous
