Would this be OK for a late summer/early fall semi-formal wedding at a winery?
Tumblr media
It's poplin so casual but 1) I would add a metallic belt, nice earrings, great shoes, & clutch and 2) it would not be as short on me since I'm 5'3" and I assume the model is 5'14" or something.
Wedding is 4pm outside at a winery with dinner and dancing after. It's Livermore so I'm preparing to die from heat stroke until we can go inside to the air conditioning.
D is wearing something similar to this (same style but a light blue-silver):
Tumblr media
And another friend is wearing some floor-length gown like....what?
Do I not understand semi-formal? To be fair, the brides don't seem to understand semi-formal lol. Anyway, gimme the real talk. And point me toward something cute that isn't a zillion dollars.
ETA: I'm sure the dress material is what throws it into "not formal enough" territory but hoping if I distract with SHINY THINGS it could work.

Al Qaeda has set up nine new terrorist camps in Afghanistan in 2024, a sign of the Taliban’s increasing tolerance of terror groups in their backyard in spite of pledges to crack down, according to an Afghan resistance leader visiting Washington this week.
“These are training centers; these are recruitment centers,” said Ali Maisam Nazary, the top diplomat for Afghanistan’s National Resistance Front (NRF) based in the country’s Panjshir Valley north of Kabul. “The Taliban have even allowed al Qaeda to build bases and munitions depots in the heart of the Panjshir Valley. [That’s] something unheard of, something impossible even in the 1990s for al Qaeda to have achieved.”
Nazary said that since the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban in August 2021, just before the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country, terror groups including al Qaeda, the Islamic State’s Khorasan branch, Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan have exploded in size and scope, as the country’s unguarded borders have allowed foreign fighters from Arab countries, Central Asian neighbors, and Europe to pour into Afghanistan. Nazary said that 21 known terror groups are currently operating inside the country.
“We’re seeing all the lights are blinking red,” said Doug Livermore, a former U.S. Navy official and a member of the Special Operations Association of America. The United Nations believes that al Qaeda has training camps in at least 10 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces, even as the Taliban publicly deny that the terror group has a presence in the country.
The movement of al Qaeda forces into the Panjshir Valley—long a stronghold of the NRF—has been a shock to the resistance, which still controls about 60 percent of the area to the Taliban’s 40 percent, according to Nazary.
Al Qaeda leader Saif al-Adel has explicitly called for foreign fighters to migrate to Afghanistan and prepare to attack the West. The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, a U.S. government watchdog group, said in a July report that though the Taliban have targeted the Islamic State and some other groups, the fundamentalist organization has tolerated the presence of al Qaeda and TTP.
Terror groups control much—if not all—of Afghanistan’s border, Nazary said. “Al Qaeda didn’t have any presence in northern Afghanistan in 2001,” he said. “Today, al Qaeda has a presence throughout the country, and the other terrorist forces.” The country has become an “open black market” of leftover weapons, many of them American, he added.
“The Taliban is having the same problem that we did for 20 years,” Livermore said. “You can control the core, you can control the ring road—to an extent. But then once you start looking out from there, particularly in the east and some of that rough terrain, that seems to be where they [the Islamic State] have managed to establish a pretty solid base of operations.”
Nazary described the relationship between the Taliban and terror groups as “ironclad,” suggesting the group had even provided passports to allow foreign terrorist fighters into the country. The same U.N. report in July said that the Islamic State’s Khorasan branch has facilitators in both Afghanistan and Turkey who can move terrorist fighters into Europe to conduct attacks.
But some experts are doubtful that the NRF’s message will resonate in Washington. “They are refusing to acknowledge that it’s not 2001 anymore,” said Michael Kugelman, the director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington. “They don’t recognize that, quite frankly, the U.S. and other Western capitals are not interested in getting dragged into a conflict in Afghanistan. There’s no interest in providing arms or money to anti-Taliban groups.”
U.S. intelligence officials are skeptical—at least publicly—about the extent to which Afghanistan could become a terrorist launching pad. The CIA remains in contact with the Taliban in an effort to stanch terror activities, the agency’s deputy director, David Cohen, said at a conference in Maryland on Wednesday, and he said that U.S. intelligence was able to tip Austrian authorities to an Islamic State threat against a planned Taylor Swift concert in Vienna earlier this month.
“We have been engaging with them, all throughout this period, in various ways, as they have taken on the effort to combat both al Qaeda and ISIS-K,” Cohen said of the U.S. contact with the Taliban, using a common acronym for the Islamic State’s Khorasan branch. “And so this isn’t a ‘mission accomplished’ sort of thing. But it is worth noting that in Afghanistan today, the dire predictions have not come to pass.”
Kugelman said the NRF is trying to leverage growing U.S. concerns about terrorism risks stemming from Afghanistan and the Taliban’s harsh crackdown on women’s rights and perceived political opponents. But, he said, it doesn’t have the power to challenge the Taliban head-on.
“I do think that the NRF might perhaps overstate the dangers in Afghanistan, particularly when it comes to terrorism risks, in order to make a stronger case for support,” he said. “I’d also argue that at the end of the day, the Taliban really does not face any threat at all to its political survival.”

Holly Patterson, 18 (USA 2003)
Tumblr media
In 2003, a teenage girl named Holly Patterson was told that the abortion pill was safe. She was never told that there was a chance of any dangerous complications. Planned Parenthood sold her the pill that ended her baby’s life and then her own.
Holly’s parents hadn’t even known she was pregnant. Her father received a phone call at work and was horrified to hear that his daughter, who he described as a fitness buff and the picture of health, was now in the hospital with severe septic shock. He rushed to the hospital to be with his dying daughter.
In his testimony, Monty Patterson tells us about the painful and traumatic death of his daughter:
“Once there, I found her in the intensive care unit, barely conscious, too weak to talk, pale complexion, puffy faced, and struggling to breathe… While standing at her beside, the doctor came in and briskly explained, “We are doing everything we can for her, but she might not make it. These things sometimes happen as a result of the [abortion] pill.”
Only a week after taking the pill, 18-year-old Holly was dead. The once-healthy teenager who had been a joy in her parent’s life was killed slowly and painfully by the “care” advertised by Planned Parenthood.
It was discovered that shortly before she was hospitalized, Holly repeatedly called the Planned Parenthood facility hotline to complain of severe cramping. She was told her symptoms were normal and to just use a heating pad take the Tylenol-Codeine painkiller. Planned Parenthood was negligent every step of the way.
Holly died less than a month after her 18th birthday. Her heartbroken family fights to make sure that other people don’t fall into the same trap that took their daughter away from them. To this day, her loved ones know that Holly was a reasonable and intelligent person who would not have taken the abortion pill if she had known about the danger. Nobody should be misled about the abortion pill the way Holly was.

"The Fall Guy" (2024) Review
Tumblr media
Today I went to the Vine Cinema in Livermore to see "The Fall Guy" directed by David Leitch. It stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. I found it to be a very entertaining movie but with a really thin plot, very little character development and it probably won't wind up being considered a great classic. It had lots of stunts in it, lots of explosions, shooting guns, jumping around, fighting and even a love story. It was just a fun, light movie, a celebration of the people who do stunts on movies.

Ascending New Heights: Let’s Check Out Mount Tripyramid North Peak, Zealand, Bondcliff, and Willey
Mount Tripyramid North Peak - Elevation: 4180 ft
Difficulty Level: Like Middle Tripyramid (see previous blog post), the north peak is generally viewed as a difficult trek. Since it is about 0.7 miles away from Middle Tripyramid, this is another chance to hit both summits. While this is an amazing opportunity, I would like to stress that it is a strenuous hike with rock slab portions. I am personally not a fan of hiking rock slabs during the colder months, so please note the immense danger this can bring (especially with precipitation). One must come prepared in the winter months with spikes, snowshoes, and additional gear for climbing icier parts.
Trail: The two most popular trails to access the summit are North Tripyramid via Livermore Trail and the Mount Tripyramid Loop Trail. AllTrails link below:

North Tripyramid via Livermore Trail, New Hampshire - 23 Reviews, Map | AllTrails

Basis, S. (n.d.-c). Hiking Mount Tripyramid Loop via North Slide in White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire StAV is lost. https://www.stavislost.com/hikes/trail/mount-tripyramid-loop-via-north-slide
Zealand Mountain- Elevation: 4260 ft
Difficulty Level: With Zealand Mountain, we drop back down to a moderate hike, with less treacherous terrain. While this hike may be less strenuous than North Tripyramid, it is important to note that this is another wooded summit. If you are looking for a view, I recommend taking the time to walk to Zeacliff, which can be accessed via the Twinway trail (connects Zeacliff to the summit of Zealand mountain). I will link below.
Trail: For this blog series, I have been linking only AllTrails links. The first link is from AllTrails (via Zealand Trail and Appalachian Trail), but the second link is from hikingandfishing.com. It provides more detailed directions for accessing Zealand trail, Zealand falls, Zealand falls hut, Zeacliff, and finally the summit. I strongly recommend taking the time to explore the option. Links Below:

Bondcliff - Elevation: 4265 ft
Difficulty Level: Bondcliff is another strenuous and long hike. I recommend Bondcliff to hikers once they have completed at least five hikes over 10 miles long. This is not to discourage anyone. Like most of the NH48’s, it is a hard hike with a large payoff in views. See the picture below for the iconic shot that you must take once completing the trek! As always, I want to highlight that this is another opportunity to peak bag, with Mount Bond and West Bond right near. With Bondcliff, the hike is over 18 miles, with Mount Bond and West Bond, the hike is about 22 miles. Because this, is a rather long out and back trail, it is common for hikers to camp at the end, and return to their cars the next day. Even if one does not plan to camp, I advise hikers to bring extra food, gear, and layers just in case.
Trail:  As previously mentioned, it is extremely popular for hikers to continue on and peak bag both Mount Bond and West Bond after Bondcliff. Bondcliff and these two mountains can be accessed via the out and back Lincoln Woods Trail that becomes the Bondcliff Trail. AllTrails link below:

Mount Willey - Elevation: 4285 ft
Difficulty Level: With Mount Willey we find ourselves back at an easy-moderate hike, and a much shorter hike than Bondcliff. As mentioned previously (see post about Mount Tom), this is an opportunity to peak bag Mount Field and Mount Tom via the Willey Range trail. If you decide to do this, the difficulty level will increase, as it lengthens the hike.
Trail: The two most popular trails to summit Mount Willey are via the Mount Willey Trail or via the Willey Range Trail. If you do not wish to peak bag, I recommend the Mount Willey trail, as it is a shorter out and back trail with amazing views! AllTrails links below:

Even as serious questions emerged about why a door plug flew off one of Alaska Airlines’ new Boeing jets last week and forced an emergency landing, one question was on the mind of many cellphone users: How in the world did an iPhone reportedly fall 16,000 feet from the aircraft and survive intact?
Social media channels were abuzz with discussion and speculation over how the phone could have still been operable and whether the phone’s survival might find its way into an advertising campaign. USA TODAY reached out to two scientists who explained how physics would have played a role.
David Rakestraw, a senior scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, works with students as part of the laboratory's science and math education program. He often talks with students about cellphones, phone drop tests, and how students can do sophisticated experiments with their phones.

Landscaping for All Seasons: Maintaining a Beautiful Yard Year-Round
Maintaining a beautiful yard year-round involves planning and incorporating elements that thrive in each season. Here's a guide to landscaping for all seasons, ensuring your outdoor space remains visually appealing and functional throughout the year:
Spring: Preparing for Growth
Spring is an exciting time in landscaping, as it marks the start of growing season. The key to a beautiful spring landscape is preparation. Start by cleaning up any debris or dead plants from winter, and rake your lawn to remove dead grass and thatch. This will allow for proper air circulation and help your lawn grow healthier. Additionally, it's important to trim any damaged or overgrown branches from trees and shrubs to promote new growth.
Planting for Spring
Spring is the perfect time to add new plants to your landscape. Select colorful flowers and plants that thrive in cooler temperatures, such as pansies, lilacs, and daffodils. When planting, be sure to follow proper spacing and depth guidelines for each type of plant, as this can greatly affect their growth.
Fertilizing and Watering
As temperatures rise, it's important to make sure your plants have enough nutrients and moisture to thrive. Consider fertilizing your lawn and garden beds with a slow-release fertilizer to provide long-lasting nourishment. It's also important to water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep your plants healthy and hydrated.
Summer: Maintaining a Lush Landscape
Summer is the time for your landscape to shine, but it also brings its own set of challenges. With hot temperatures and potential drought conditions, proper maintenance is crucial.
Mowing and Trimming
During the summer months, your lawn will likely require more frequent mowing. However, it's important to adjust the blade height on your mower to avoid cutting your grass too short, as this can lead to damage and stress. You should also continue trimming any overgrown branches or shrubs.
Mulching and Weed Control
Mulch is not only aesthetically pleasing but also serves as a protective layer for your plants during the hot summer months. Spread a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around your garden beds to retain moisture and prevent weeds from growing. Speaking of weeds, be sure to regularly check and remove any unwanted plants, as they compete with your desired plants for nutrients.
Fall: Preparing for Winter
As temperatures start to cool down, it's time to prepare your landscape for the winter months ahead.
Raking and Pruning
Similar to spring, it's important to rake up any dead leaves or debris from fall. This will prevent mold and disease from developing in your lawn. It's also a good idea to prune any damaged or diseased branches from trees and shrubs before the harsh winter weather arrives.
Regular Assessments:
-Walkthroughs: Conduct regular walkthroughs to identify any issues or opportunities for improvement in your landscaping.
-Professional Consultation: Periodically consult with landscaping professionals for advice on seasonal maintenance and adjustments.
