The piece with the same title as the show, “Deathlessness” by Darin Latimer is 6ft x 4ft, Krink Ink & acrylic on panel. . . . “The reason this show is called ‘Deathlessness’ is a movie and literary reference. The movie reference has an echo of regret because it was never made, and I should know. I wrote it. It was optioned several times, nearly dozens more, it almost got into the Sundance Filmmaking Labs twice. It won some competition prizes as well. It got me an agent of esteem (whom I still have) but it never quite got the necessary dozen lightning strike hits of good luck that might have made it a great movie, or a movie at all. The title had a two-fold inspiration for the script. I culled it from an Emily Dickinson Poem. This is the poem – I am afraid to own a Body--- I am afraid to own a Soul--- Profound – precarious Property— Possession, not optional – Double Estate – entailed at Pleasure Upon an unsuspecting Heir – Duke in a Moment of Deathlessness And God, for a Frontier This poem, somewhat obtusely, actually describes my movie. The protagonist (Emily Dickinson obsessed) becomes obsessed with an older woman, the antagonist, and the fulcrum of the dramatic conflict is two-fold; He does not realize she is the antagonist because, until quite late in the story, he does not realize she is not dead or, more accurately, alive again (real life and scientific – not fantasy). A corporeal avenging angel still striding the earth and running the show. With no further explanation – that is his Tragic Flaw. That’s where the title comes from.” - Darin . . . #deathlessness #art #contemporaryart #artist #darinlatimer #krinkink #artisttowatch #chicagogallery #artinspiration #literaryinfluence (at Elephant Room Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwXGLTaHrJF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ovcrnboolzze

Second Sunday of #Frankenstein lectures at #decorridor in #wetteren, with #jeanpaulvanbendegem ,#johanbraeckman and #vitalski. This time I only dragged one person along 😊 Learnt a lot about the #history and #scientificdiscoveries of the time period, which is really cool. I know some #science stuff, but not much about #sciencehistory, so I feel like I learnt a bunch. Unfortunately there wasn't much focus on the #literaryinfluences or the literary elements in the text. (And on a more personal, frustrated note: can everybody just lay OFF Claire Clairmont for goodness' sake? Girl was 18 ffs. An older grievance: stop saying Shelley 'contributed greatly' to Mary's writing. Scholars are still arguing about that. Ok, rant over. ) #novels #classics #maryshelley #claireclairmont #Byron #percybyssheshelley #horror #gothic #romanticism https://www.instagram.com/p/BuTbxsiH5q9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1agkukizzrst
