During the first half of this Uni round Atticus is well on the way to pickpocketing everyone in the dorm, Lise and Jamie fall in love and AdaBella seems to be pissing everyone off. Everyone makes it to Sophomore year.

This list is subject to changes. Compiling a list of lesbian authors is a challenge because not all authors are out and my sources of information are limited. I had to rely on finding author bios, interviews, tweets, etc. in which an author mentions her sexual orientation. I also got many of these names from the Lesbian Authors Guild.

We remember.
16 years ago, my church held an impromptu service in the wake of 9/11. There was only a preliminary list of the people killed. Everybody drew little sheets of paper with a name on it from a basket, and during the prayer we each read the name we held aloud at the same time. The name I got was Stephen Dimino. I make a point to say his name out loud several times a day every 9/11.
I put a list of their names under the cut. You will be scrolling for a long time. I encourage everyone to pick out a name, write it down and say it in whatever form you communicate best be it AAC, sign language, or even keeping a photo of that person with their name if you can find a photo of them.
Some say a person’s memory stays alive as long as their name is still read or spoken. I can’t bring back the people who died that awful day, but I can use this platform to put their names out there so their memory stays alive.

Wow you answer a lot of asks. The work you put in is greatly appreciated! My reading list has been growing by the day. Do you have any recs for scifi, aliens, or anything space related? (Doesn't have to he space related or aliens but fingers crossed). Thank you!!
It’s been an usually busy day! But Asks are my favorite part of the job, tbh ;) Some recs for you: Sound by Alexandra Duncan, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley, Depths of Blue by Lise MacTague, and Planet Fall by Emma Newman, and keep an eye out for 27 Hours by Tristina Wright and Barbary Station by R.E. Stearns! I’m not sure whether any of them have aliens, tbh, but they’re definitely space related!

JANUARY 25: Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)
Dear readers,
Today we will explore the life and affections of a favourite writer of mine - Virginia Woolf. This first post will be echoed by reviews of several of her books later this year, which is why we won’t linger too much on praising her literary genius.
To put you in the right mood, you can listen here to the only recording of her voice, first broadcast by the BBC on 29 April 1937 as part of a series called Words Fail Me.
British writer Virginia Woolf was born Adeline Virginia Stephen on January 25, 1882 in a stepfamily, to Julia Prinsep Jackson, who was Julia Margaret Cameron’s niece and a Pre-Raphaelite model, and to Sir Leslie Stephen, who was previously William Thackeray’s son-in-law, and a historian, critic and biographer. Such parents came with friends from Victorian literary circles such as Henry James, Lewes and Lowell who were regularly invited at their house in Kensington, London, and influenced the education of the Stephen children.
Virginia Stephen by George Charles Beresford, July 1902
Listing the family tragedies that occurred while Virginia was still young is heartbreaking. Her half-sister Laura was sent to an asylum when Virginia was 9. Then her mother died when she was 13, shortly followed by her other half-sister Stella. To top it all, Virginia and her sister Vanessa were sexually abused as children and teenagers by their adult half-brothers. (Thankfully their crime was acknowledged and denounced by both women later on!)
This left the remaining four children, Vanessa, Thoby, Virginia and Adrian to deal with a tyrannical, capricious father too occupied with his life’s work – editing the Dictionary of National Biographies. At that time, Virginia suffered (presumably as a result) several nervous breakdowns, and subsequent recurring depressive periods, for which doctors prescribed “Rest Cures” (ever read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman?). Actually similar mood swings continued to torment her all her life, and partly led to her suicide in the River Ouse on March 28, 1941.
Vanessa et Virginia playing cricket at their family’s summer home in Cornwall, 1893 – a idyllic setting which inspired To the Lighthouse (1927) a vibrant homage to their mother.
While the boys were given a proper education and sent to Cambridge, that would have been inappropriate for the girls. At least, Virginia could educate herself thanks to her father’s huge private library – and, boy, did she read! Along with learning Ancient Greek, Latin, and German, she developed a yearning to write, starting with diaries, and a family newspaper, illustrated by Vanessa who took art classes. Furthermore, their brothers brought home their friends from Cambridge, which was the beginning of what we know as the Bloomsbury Group.
However it only officially became the Bloomsbury Group when the Stephen siblings actually left Kensington at their father’s death in 1902, and set up house in Bloomsbury, where they started to live a bohemian life and regularly welcomed Lytton Strachey, Duncan Grant, Roger Fry, John Maynard Keynes and others in their midst. They had so much fun (ever heard of the Dreadnought Hoax?) breaking the codes of Victorian society, in art, literature, but also in their social life – they had quite the progressive approach to sexuality. Though if homosexuality between men was accepted and even celebrated, as much as heterosexuality, that didn’t seem to include lesbianism – how progressive…

But then, Thoby died, and soon afterwards, her sister Vanessa, to whom Virginia was really close, married art critic Clive Bell. After a fake marriage proposal by Lytton, the latter urged his friend Leonard Woolf, who was abroad at the time, to marry Virginia. They met and indeed married in 1912. Critics often disagree on their relationship and Leonard’s role in Virginia’s life – the saviour, or the prison ward. On the one hand, he refused her a child, giving her mental instability as a pretext and influencing the doctors’ ultimate decision, and was often painted as the poor husband of a frigid Virginia in the latter’s first biographies – a portrait shaped by his perspective, which hides his own issues regarding sex and women. But on the other hand, he nurtured Virginia’s talent, tried to keep her stable by moving to the countryside, giving her a hobby (as prescribed by doctors) by creating the Hogarth Press, which published her own books, but also that of the members of the Bloomsbury Group, other contemporary writers, and the first English translation of Sigmund Freud’s work. At least, most critics agree to say that, without Leonard, Virginia probably wouldn’t have lived as long - and written as much - as she did.
“Virginia Woolf” (c.1912) portrait by Vanessa Bell. Vita Sackville-West as “Lady in a Red Hat” (1918) by William Strang
Nevertheless, Virginia’s affections were more often directed towards women – it started with her first crush, her cousin Madge, then with Violet Dickinson, 17 years her senior, who helped her through the death of her father. Later on, she intrigued and impressed the extravagant Ottoline Morrell, who developed a crush on her and often invited her to her salons, though Virginia would often ridicule her and mock her behind her back – aware of the power she yielded thanks to her words and wit, she always liked to hold court in society, where she gave satirical portrayals of everybody (while drinking champagne). Composer Ethel Smyth also fell for Virginia, and both women remained friends till the latter’s death.
Her most famous relationship though was with Vita Sackville West, whom she met in 1922. Their affair led Virginia to write to - and about - her lover. She described Vita as “pink glowing, grape clustered, pearl hung” and wrote to her “you only be a careful dolphin in your gambolling, or you’ll find Virginia’s soft crevices lined with hooks!” Their romance led to the writing of Orlando, qualified by Vita’s son as “the longest and most charming love letter in literature,” but also inspired other writers, such as Edna O’Brien, Eileen Atkins, Christine Orban…
Virginia was fascinated by bisexuality (as the fusion of both male and female identities in one person, not the modern understanding of the term) and experimented with the ideas of genders, and heterosexual and homosexual relationships in her writing. If you are interested in that reflection, I recommend the recent lesbian reading of her works (both fiction and non-fiction).
Want to know more? Here are some anecdotes about her...

Coming Up: A university round at Sim State University.
On the left is Atticus Leander. He is nice, active and playful and a huge slob. He has the unstable, kleptomaniac, perfectionist, excitable and unflirty traits. His LTW is to reach the top of the slacker career. He is the younger brother of Lo Leander, who is in the middle of a who’s your daddy challenge.
The girl who is sitting down is Adabella Miguel, one of the children who were taken from Angel Miguel and Lillian Miguel by the social worker. She is neat and active but also shy and grumpy. Her traits are great kisser, excitable, good sense of humor, bot fan and loves the heat. Her LTW is to build a servo. Back at the orphanage she fell in love with Gallagher Newson but he is studying at Academie Le Tour and has fallen in love with her sister Donna Miguel there.
Gavin Newson (in the blue sweater) is a sloppy, shy, active and playful kind of guy and his traits are socially awkward, green thumb, bookworm, good and vegetarian. His dream is to become an Ecological Guru and master the nature hobby. He spent his teens in the same orphanage as Adabella and Jamie.
Redheaded Lise Duncan is the result of her mother Edna having a wild night with townie Albino Mora. When Lise was a child her mother Edna married Julien Cooke and Lise feels he is her true father. She is extremely tidy and very active but she is also grouchy and serious. She was given the workaholic, hopeless romantic, handy, unlucky and perceptive traits. Her ultimate goal is to become a Media Magnate.
On the right, wearing an orange vest is Jamie Miguel. He is Adabella’s brother and they were both taken by the social worker at the same time. He is very neat, outgoing and active, quite nice and extremely serious. His traits are athletic, star quality, heavy sleeper, schmoozer and commitment issues. His dream is to become a star athlete.
The blonde guy and the others are just fellow students who happened to walk into the shot.

Thinks: Mistaken Identity
Sedentary Fragmentation at Heaven Gallery in Chicago, through August 25
Conversation between Hadi Fallahpisheh and George Olken
On the occasion of Heaven Gallery’s current exhibition Sedentary Fragmentation, featuring work by nine Iranian graduates of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), participating artist Maryam Hoseini, asked if either of her friends Hadi Fallahpisheh, also an artist from Iran, or George Olken, an American graduate from SAIC, would like to write about the show. They agreed that a conversation would be best. What follows is an edited version.
Edited with visual essay by Lise McKean
Yasamin Ghanbari (photos courtesy of Kimia Maleki)
Artists Hadi Fallahpisheh and George Olken talk about Sedentary Fragmentation, curated by Kimia Maleki and featuring work by Hannibal Alkhas, Yasi Ghanbari, Azadeh Gholizade, Maryam Hoseini, Mehdi Hosseini, Elnaz Javani, Nazafarin Lotfi, Sophie Loloi, and Raha Raissni. The exhibition showcases archival materials from the artists’ experience in Chicago and Tehran and presents several generations of artists who are often misrepresented by having identities placed upon them that do not define them as artists.
George: In her statement, curator Kimia Maleki writes, “[This show] brings together Iranian voices, generations, and alumni who studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.” When we say “Iranian” artists what do we mean? Not all the artists in the show are from Iran and not all the artists came from the same Iran? Do they share aesthetics, ethnic identity, national identity?
Hadi: For me, there is no Iranian identity, especially in relation to visual art. It only exists through its language, which is called neither Iranian nor Persian, it is Farsi. The only thing these artists are really sharing is the Farsi language. But it’s funny, none of them are using the language in their work. If I am going to talk to an American person about Maryam Hoseini’s work I would even be so worried to say she is an “Iranian artist.” She was born in 1988, ten years after Islamic Revolution—in Islamic Republic of Iran. She’s not really “Iranian,” she is “Islamic Republic Iranian.” On the other hand, Mehdi Hosseini, Hannibal Alkhas, and Raha Raissnia saw Iran before Islamic Revolution, which was another kind of life.
George: Does your statement give too much power to the state? There must be some continuity for people in Iran that exists before and after the Islamic Republic came to power: language, family, landscape. I’m thinking of living in the same city where my father and grandfather grew up, there is a connection to history despite change. I imagine that despite political upheaval, there are similar continuities in Iran going all the way back to what we call Persia.
Hannibal Alkhas
Hadi: Yes, it gives too much power to the state. Yet, it’s important to recognize that the state is powerful enough to make a young artist say goodbye to family and homeland to seek on the other side of the world what their state doesn’t offer. But I also agree with what you say: There many breaks in the last 150 years of Iran’s history make Iranian identity very complicated. And it is much harder when it comes to Iranian art. It goes so far that we invent an interest in Iran’s ancient history. But nothing is left of that history. So much has happened since then and now. What these Iranians are proud of sharing is broken. It doesn’t exist anymore. Culturally it doesn’t exist, visually it doesn’t exist.
Exhibition view
I see some possible subconscious references to the idea of ruins in Sedentary Fragmentation. The works all look like ruins. Hoseini’s work is aware of that ruin. Nazafarin Lotfi’s chair is a ruined structure and her painting is a ruined figure. The jaws in Elnaz Javani’s work are ruined. That’s the shared experience of being Iranian that we carry with us. When we remember through language that all we are share is in ruins, it is a ruin of a culture.
George: Except for the square painting of Hannibal Alkhas and Hoseini’s paintings, there’s not a lot that recalls ancient or antiquarian Iran. To me, it looks post-industrial. Lotfi’s mass-produced chair, Javani’’s shipping pallets, and Azadeh Gholizade’s white floor sculptures make me think of modern construction.
Azadeh Gholizadeh
Hadi: It’s a great window you are opening: When I say ruin, you think ancient, but it can be a contemporary ruin. I would like to mention a saying most Iranian artist carry: “We never understood Modernism.” It means we never experienced the ancient era nor the modern era. It’s the connection to a ruin of something—even the title of the show, after fragmentation what’s left is the ruin of that thing.
George: Gholizadeh’s sculptures look like concrete apartment blocks.
Hadi: Yes, but as if the wind came through and ruined that block.
George: Because of their size?
Hadi: Because they are broken. I can also read it as before construction, before you build a wall. And for me, it’s same with all the other artists too. There was the 1953 Iranian coup d’état, then the Islamic Revolution. Then there was the eight-year war with Iraq (1980-88). Then came the post-war’s dark days. Then came a semi-liberal period of eight years, the experience of Ahmadinejad as president (2004-12), and the Green Movement (2008-09). The idea of social ruins has many different historical moments.
Sophie Loloi
George: Lotfi’s chair is not an ancient ruin, but a modern ruin—yet one form contains the other. And there is a striking formal continuity through the work. The form in Loloi’s photographs of the wind blowing fabric against her body echoes the bodies in Hoseini’s paintings. The black-and-white of the photographs is repeated in Lotfi’s work and again in Gholizadeh’s sculptures. The grids in Gholizadeh’s work reappear in Javani’s pallets and in Raissni’s slides.
Hadi: The question of who is representing whose body is always important to me. Hoseini comes from Iran and she is painting nude bodies. Loloi’s experience is American and her images is a woman wrapped in fabric. Not only that. Alkhas’s bodies are Western bodies. Or at least they don’t seem Iranian. They’re more Greek or Roman.
George: What kind of body is Hoseini representing?
Maryam Hoseini
Hadi: They look like Muslim Iranian bodies with their clothes removed.
George: I don’t want to say they are Iranian—or Middle Eastern or Muslim. They aren’t that specific. But they’re set against the motifs or patterns that place them. They are not strictly real or identifiably from the world. But they don’t feel to me as if they are from Chicago or America. Maybe we can say “non-Western” if we accept that as a frame.
Raha Raissni
Hadi: You can say non-Western. But it’s not necessary. The main thing is that they are nude bodies. She never made nude female bodies in Tehran. Although Raissni’s work goes to same category for me as Loloi’s, Raissni is older. She’s been here for maybe thirty years and her work is black. It’s dark. Both are representing what they don’t have. Loloi has never been wrapped in chador. Raissni has a Western life, it’s colorful, her work is a dark, black remembrance of the past.
George: How do you talk about Javani’s work? Her bodies are reduced only to teeth? For me it is medical or forensic. Sometimes they identify unknown bodies by their teeth. There’s something violent to me.
Hadi: Javani’s work reminds me of speaking, of the voice, of language. It’s about people who come here. If you go to a company that casts your body parts or bones, and you chose to cast this part, for me it’s all about language. How we are speaking with the tongue and these jaw bones.
Elnaz Javani
George: Yes, I’m thinking how without the lower jaw you lose speech. Another ruin. But we’re focusing on the Iranian side of the show. How does Chicago figure in understanding these artists?
Hadi: SAIC (School of the Art Institute) is the only school that really accepts Iranian artists. More than any other school.
George: I’m talking about the city. Does Chicago appear in this work? Or does the Art Institute mark a clear influence?
Hadi: Chicago appears in this work as much as it appears in any graduate student’s work after living in that place for two years. Not much.
George: Yes, that’s right. Only three of these artists continue to live in Chicago. The show overemphasizes the importance for these artists of SAIC as a place. And that’s my experience too. SAIC is not connected to the place. Only some students make a relationship to the city outside of school. But this show has been organized this way. And it does raise questions. We start to see the difference between older people and younger, artists from here or there. This is what is so troubling to me about “Iranian”—despite being able to problematize it as a category and say it’s not real. As soon as we start to talk about the show, we start to use it. We say, “What does it mean to be a young Iranian versus an older Iranian ? What does it mean to be Iranian -American or an Iranian from Tehran?” We’re comfortable saying we shouldn’t use it but we are also comfortable using it.
Hadi: I want to say something about the importance of reference points. I truly believe when we talk about Iranian arts or any show related to Iranian identity, we lack these historical references. You can’t make connections. It’s like if you hear someone speaking German and you already know what German sounds like. You can think maybe the person is German. But if you hear someone speaking a language you have never heard, then you don’t know what to think.
Hadi Fallahpisheh is a multi-disciplinary artist. He lives and works in New York. George Olken is a writer in Chicago, filmmaker/teacher in Cambridge, and performer in New York. He also makes cookies at large.

Cooke Family
I’m back with my backwards legacy families and next in line are the Cooke’s. Julien married my 7th generation sim Edna Duncan, when they married she already had a daughter named Lise Duncan who is now at uni. After that she had Loretta, Nathan and Dustin with Julien.
This week in the Cooke household......
Julien gets struck by lightning, a rare occurance in my game for sure!
Maxx becomes an adult dog
Loretta leaves for Uni
And Dustin grows up to a teen. If you noticed in the family picture the skin on his head and body was mismatched, yes it was and I tried everything to fix it but failed. Luckily the problem did not persist into his teen years.
He grew up with a family aspiration and he is an average achiever. He dreams of meeting a nice guy with facial hair and face makeup but who does not wear jewelry.

JANUARY 15: Loïe Fuller (1862 - 1928)
Marie Louise “Loïe” Fuller was born 155 years ago, on the 15th of January 1862 in the Chicago suburb of Fullersberg (now Hinsdale), Illinois.
Loïe Fuller, c. 1900, source
She is considered the most original, innovative pioneers in modern dance and lighting design, paving the way for artists such as Isadora Duncan or Martha Graham. But unlike others, she had no formal training in ballet or any classical dancing. Indeed she started her career as a child comedian and joined several travelling theatre companies, performing burlesque, vaudeville - she even toured with Buffalo Bill!
However she soon developed a passion for dancing, and choreographing her own dances inspired by Greek statues, using long veils and electrical lighting. Her major breakthrough came in 1892 in New York with The Serpentine Dance.
Loïe Fuller featured at the Folies Bergère
And yet, she decided to move to Paris that same year – and remained attached to France thereafter. The Parisian audience discovered her at the Folies Bergère, where she shook up the artistic scene - her performance was received as an embodiment of the Art Nouveau and the symbolist movement by the critics, who dubbed her the “Fairy of Light,” or “Fée Électricité.” Indeed she represented the general feeling of enthusiasm for scientific and technological progress of the Belle Époque.
She also became the muse of symbolists and Art Nouveau artists. Not only did she inspire artists such as Mallarmé, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rodin, Carabin, Harry C. Ellis, I. W. Taber, but she was also admired by scientists Marie and Pierre Curie, Guimard, Flammarion, and the Lumière Brothers... The architect Henri Sauvage built her a theatre-museum at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, where she performed and presented Japanese dancer Sada Yacco’s company.
However her success meant that she also had to deal with imitators. This is why later on she filed many patents and copyrights for her techniques and inventions regarding stage lighting, garments and accessories. She even became a member of the French Astronomical Society!
Frederick Glasier, Portrait of Loïe Fuller, 1902
Her style was unique. Indeed she elaborated her own movements and improvisation technique, her own style – a style which she felt was more natural than classical dance, focused on the motions of the arms rather than the feet, and was later named “free dance.” The movements of her body were amplified by huge costumes made of hundreds of yards of silk, which she often animated by holding two long bamboo or aluminium wand-like extensions. The translucent layers of fabric swirled around her in mesmerizing shapes and waves, enhanced by lighting effects from the sides of the stage, and from underneath her, when she danced on a plate of glass - she was always experimenting new ways of creating spectacular, magical effects.

The Serpentine Dance recorded in 1896 by the Lumière Brothers. Flower, mushroom, butterfly, fairy… What do you see?
She didn’t hide her feminist ideas and homosexuality. I won’t get into the topic of how the recent Loïe Fuller biopic obliterated that part of her life – a topic to which we will dedicate a whole article later this year.
Loïe Fuller created her own feminine world, surrounding herself with her students, called the “Fullerets” or Muses. Isadora Duncan wrote about her first encounter with Loïe, and described the older dancer amidst “dozen or so beautiful girls… alternately stroking her hands and kissing her.” Nonetheless, Loïe played an important part in Isadora’s success in Europe by sponsoring her spectacles.
She was briefly married to Colonel William Hayes, but after they separated in 1892, she only had lesbian relationships. She fell in love with her student and collaborator Gabrielle Bloch, also known as Gab Sorère and together they joined Natalie Barney’s salon, a circle of lesbian artists, where they befriended Romaine Brooks, Eileen Gray and Damia. All in all, Fuller and Bloch lived together for 23 years, till Loïe’s death in 1928.
