It was recently Tell a Fairy Tale Day (02/26), so here's an updated and expanded list of retellings for all fairy tale- and folklore-obsessed readers!
*Key at the end of the post*
The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert (Fairy Tale-esque)
Alice's grandmother is known for her collection of stories that has spawned a cult-like following, spawning plenty of fanatics to follow Alice and her mother around. Damsel by Elana K. Arnold (Fairy Tale-esque)
Ama remembers nothing. All she knows is that she was saved by Prince Emory from a vicious dragon. It seems she will be taken care of for the rest of her life as a pampered princess, but as she learns more about her new home, the more darkness seems to well up around the edges. *read trigger warnings* (NA, high fantasy)
The Frog Princess by E. D. Baker (The Frog Prince)
Princess Emeralda is about to be caught in an unfortunate engagement, but she finds an escape in a talking frog. A frog who claims he is a prince, a perfect excuse to escape a betrothal. What she doesn't expect is being turned into a frog herself with no clue how to change both of them back. (MG, high fantasy)
The Wide-Awake Princess by E. D. Baker (Sleeping Beauty)
Princess Gwen was tragically cursed to fall into a magical sleep, so when her younger sister, Annie, is born, she is given only one christening gift—the ability to resist any magic. When the curse comes true and Gwen falls asleep, Annie sets out to find her sister's true love and wake the kingdom again. (MG, high fantasy)
Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson (Peter Pan)
From an orphanage in London, Peter and his mysterious friend, Molly, arrive at a faraway island. There, pirates and adventures abound, but nothing is as exciting as a precious new substance that can cure wounds, give flight, and keep people young forever. (MG, low fantasy)
The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor (Alice in Wonderland)
When Wonderland, land of dreams and imagination, undergoes a bloody coup, Princess Alyss Heart is forced to flee to the real world, taking on the name Alice Liddel. Years later, she is needed to win Wonderland back, but is it time for Alyss' imagination to be saved? (YA, low fantasy)
The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley (multiple)
Sabrina and Daphne Grimm have bounced from foster home to foster home before their formerly-unknown grandmother takes them in. She seems like everything two children could want, but Sabrina doesn't trust her. Not only does she serve outlandish foods and have an outrageous amount of locks on her house, but she seems to believe their town is full of fairy tale characters, all with mysteries that need solving. (MG, magical realism)
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani (multiple)
Agatha and Sophie are best friends, but they couldn't be more different. Agatha is ugly and unpleasant and Sophie is pretty and kind, so when they're taken to the School for Good and Evil, it seems obvious who's Good and who's Evil. However, when the girl's places are switched, they must put things to rights. (MG/YA, high fantasy)
To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo (The Little Mermaid)

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn (King Arthur)
In an attempt to move on after her mother's death, Bree attends an early college program. A few days ago I finished reading To Kill A Kingdom and I'm totally IN LOVE ❤️❤️❤️ and I have a huge obsession with this wonderful book. I have always been a "sea" person and the mermaid theme is one of my favorites but To Kill A Kingdom exceeded my wildest expectations. What I felt while reading it is indescribable, seriously I can't name it. I keep going back to my favorite parts now, I just can't tear myself away from this wonderful book. I also admire all the amazing fanarts that Alexandra shared on her Instagram (btw the authors of the fanarts - you are brilliant and mega talented people)
Lira and Elian... MY GOD HOW I LOVE THEM ❤️❤️❤️ you can't even imagine it - they are my favorite couple (they are also in my 1st place when it comes to the heroines of the books I have read so far). I also love Kye and Madrid (shipped them from the very beginning). I recommend reading To Kill A Kingdom to everyone with all my obsessed af heart ❤️

Narcissus is dead. He remembered meeting him in that boneyard. He remembered him pleading for him to look out for Amarantha and their daughter.
Jurian wasn't sure why he went to them still. Maybe he trusted them more than he did Caudon. But then from the bits and pieces he heard of Caudon now...he wasn't the male he'd been 500 years ago.
He hoped it wasn't true that the witches had taken his mate from them. He remembered Aiofe being fierce and wild, someone who didn't go anywhere quietly.
Lira stared at him, Elian stepped toward him too. His magic twisting through the room. A wind that chilled him. Valg blooded, dark fae blooded.
"Why are you here?"
Jurian ignored her and looked to Amarantha.
"Why are you here and not in Autumn? Why are we here Amarantha? Do you actually trust Caudon to help -"
Why did it matter why she was there? Why did it matter she had not run to Autumn? None of them cared, not one had even batted an eyelid when she had screamed in agony when she felt the silence.
Silence of death, the absence of love. He was gone and there was nothing else for her to care about except her daughter, there was nothing else for her to put her all in. Why shouldn't she had come to Caudon?
Her eyes were dark as she glared at Jurian, her hand tightened into a fist. "Go back to where you belong, back to little An. Leave me alone and just go." She didn't want any of her family, none with their perfect happy little lives.

to kill a kingdom, alexandra christo
released 2018
read: 21 january 2023 – 01 february 2023
this was... better than i expected? while the premise sounded interesting, i had a feeling that this could either be great, or it could go the extraordinarily boring ya route (think the bright & the pale by jessica rubinkowski) or the unbearably corny ya route (thnk, well, most of what sarah j maas has to offer). luckily, TKAK veered for the most part on the really good end of the scale, and the SJM callout on the front cover really does the book/author a disservice.
in general, i much prefer books that don't prioritise a lacklustre romance to the detriment of the plot, and it felt like this did that well. the burn was just slow enough, simmering gently in the background rather than being dialled up to 11 much too soon. some of the moments of "chemistry", which appear in the form of banter, are a little corny and tropey but it was still enjoyable.
the actual storyline pulled me in and had me excited to pick the book up again and again. there were a couple of truly unputdownable moments, which i loved. the story was full of intrigue, deceit, and high stakes, and there was never a lull in the pace.
on the negative side, i think quite a few of the side characters were a little underdeveloped, and i think it's possible some readers will find the two main characters, lira and elian, unlikeable and boring (respectively). i didn't feel that way personally, but i do feel that had i not enjoyed the actual story, the characters would've rubbed me the wrong way. there are also a few moments of nonsensical character actions (for example, it felt like elian was willing to put his entire dream - everything he lived for - on the line and use it as a bargaining chip with far too little buildup. it didn't feel like he was backed into a corner), but they are easy enough to get past.
overall, though, whilst not groundbreaking, i do think it's worth the read if the idea of pirates, sirens and deception pulls you in!
rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
