To Kill a Kingdom
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Kill a Kingdom was a breath of fresh air amidst the sea of similar books. A dark, thrilling take on The Little Mermaid, it follows Lira, a siren princess with a nasty habit of collecting princes’ hearts, and Elian, a pirate prince who would rather roam the seas than rule. When Lira is cursed into human form, she ends up on Elian’s ship—cue chaos, banter, and trust issues.
Lira and Elian were the perfect match—sharp-tongued, stubborn, and dangerous. Their tension-filled dynamic and Elian’s lively crew, especially Madrid and Kye, made the Saad a ship worth sailing. Lira’s bond with her cousin, Kahlia, was one of the most touching parts of the book, showing a softer side to the ruthless siren.
The worldbuilding was a highlight, with the Hundred Kingdoms’ myths and dangers making the setting feel vast and immersive. My only gripe? The ending felt underwhelming. Not bad, just… not enough. If this had been a duology, I would’ve been thriving.
“Technically, I’m a murderer, but I like to think that’s one of my better qualities.” Elian
“They celebrate love as though it's power, even though it has killed far more humans than I ever have.” Lira
“You are a little heartless today, aren't you?"
"Never," I say. "There are seventeen under my bed.” Lira
“Look at you,” he whispers. “My monster, come to find me.” Elian
“We are not naïve little heirs to be molded as they wish. We are warriors. We are rulers.” Lira
“You should pay less mind to fairy tales, Elian, or that’s all you’ll become.” When he leaves, I think about whether that would be awful, or beautiful. Could it really be such a bad thing, to become a story whispered to children in the dead of night? A song they sing to one another while they play. Another” Elian

Title: To Kill a Kingdom
Author: Alexandra Christo
Page length: 344
Synopsis: Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most—a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen or remain a human forever. The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby—it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good—But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?

A few days ago I finished reading To Kill A Kingdom and I'm totally IN LOVE ❤️❤️❤️ and I have a huge obsession with this wonderful book. I have always been a "sea" person and the mermaid theme is one of my favorites but To Kill A Kingdom exceeded my wildest expectations. What I felt while reading it is indescribable, seriously I can't name it. I keep going back to my favorite parts now, I just can't tear myself away from this wonderful book. I also admire all the amazing fanarts that Alexandra shared on her Instagram (btw the authors of the fanarts - you are brilliant and mega talented people)
Lira and Elian... MY GOD HOW I LOVE THEM ❤️❤️❤️ you can't even imagine it - they are my favorite couple (they are also in my 1st place when it comes to the heroines of the books I have read so far). I also love Kye and Madrid (shipped them from the very beginning). I recommend reading To Kill A Kingdom to everyone with all my obsessed af heart ❤️

Okay I finally started one of your book recs today - To Kill a Kingdom
I love the premise so much, I LOVE sirens. And just how bloodthirsty it is. Reminds me of Manon’s clan from TOG.
Yes yes yes! Sirens and Mermaids and seawater themed things are so great. I love Lira's POV and how she's so cutthroat. And Elian is really cool too. Ahhh, I'm so excited for you to continue reading that book its always been one of my favourites. If you feel up to it send any more thoughts you have my way, eek!

//Enjoy!!!!!//
The island of bronze and sand rose from the waves, Killian met them at the shores. He smiled, helping Seraphine down. He reached for Estelle but she helped herself down.
Rhysand looked out at the island, it was peculiar.
He looked to Killian, to the very small girl clutching his leg. He was still shocked his cousin had made a secret family far from Day.
"Where did you say this island came from? Why isn't in on any of our maps?"
Killian picked up his daughter and shrugged.
"Melusine raised it from the sea for Lira and Elian. They still travel more than they're here and let me make a Ducal here. Lira says it's called Talos apparently. Not sure if that helps you and Remus."
It did though, but he knew the term not from his history books.
He followed the others in a daze, Killian speaking with Estelle, making his daughter say hi to her aunt.
Rhysand rose his eyes to the buildings, the metal statues in all manner of beasts and animals.
"It was an island of metal things."
Wasn't that what Narcissus had said once drunk and spiraling? He understood then what he'd meant or why Narcissus felt comfortable talking to him of all things.
Was this the place he'd grown up? Was this where Xaden had meant about the sea keeping it's secrets?
Did Killian know what secrets he'd unearthed?
Judging by how the crew moved around the island, no.
Fates, what would Amarantha do if Narcissus demanded his home back?
What would they do? Killian was blood even if he was insufferable.
//For ESTELLE!!//
The island was breathtaking in a way she could not describe, a paradise for the few who made it their home. Her brother was one. She glanced at him once she had stepped down from the boat, a caution she now held not because of what happened but because she no longer knew the relationships she had with her siblings, except Helion - not since she was told the secrets.
She was glad that Rhysand and Seraphine had come along, a form of support from her cousin. Her attention snapped away at that moment as the sight of the small girl caught her attention.
Even as her focus was on the child, she picked up on the things being shared. Talos. Her attention shifted back to Rhysand briefly, giving him a small smile before she was drawn back to the girl.
"She is beautiful Killian, you're blessed." She said honestly after saying hi to her niece. "Thank you for inviting us, I am glad you allowed Rhysand and Seraphine to come with me."
"We wouldn't have let you come alone," Seraphine commented. "Even if we had to stay on the boat."
Estelle smiled back at her.

Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi
Shatter Me
Unravel Me
Ignite Me
Restore Me
Defy Me
Imagine Me
Juliette’s touch can kill. She’s locked up after accidentally killing a toddler. When she’s released the Reestablishment wants to use her as a weapon. This is a long series, but a good one. I don’t like Adam and Juliette together, but like Warner and Juliette. Warner is technically the bad guy but he and Juliette make a cute couple. Adam is a caring character straight off the bat. Warner on the other hand evolves and when he does I like him.
The Folk of the Air Series by Holly Black
The Cruel Prince
The Wicked King
The Queen of Nothing
The book follows Jude who is a human and Price Carden who is a faerie. It follows their relationship and the world around them. Jude and Caden are good together. Jude is a strong willed character. None of the characters are perfect and you see them evolve and reflect.
To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Lira is siren royalty. Every year she takes the heart of a prince for her birthday. Her mother, the Sea Queen, punishes Lira after she commits a crime. She is turned into a human. Humans are hated by sirens. Lira is tasked with delivering Prince Elian’s heart to her mother as forgiveness. Prince Elian hunts sirens. He rescues Lira from drowning in the sea which is how they first meet. This is a favorite book of mine. Lira is a strong character and stands up to her mother. She’s flawed but realizes her flaws and evolves. Prince Elian is a good person, and truly cares about others. Lira and Elian are a good team, and very likable characters.
