The Rogues + Where they grew up.
Leonard and by extension Lisa: Len and Lisa grew up in inner-city Central. It’s truly their city and Len loves it. He was born here and he fully plans to die here. Lisa, however, does harbor a love for it but plans on moving away from it one day.
Mick: Mick grew up in a small town in Oklahoma, called Buckford, close to the border, mostly made up of farms. It was one of those small towns that’s more of a link from one small town to another small town. The reason he ended up in Missouri in the first place is because since he was so close to the edge of it, when he got arrested, the nearest juvenile detention center in Oklahoma was incredibly far away so they just sent him to the one in Missouri which was far closer. It wasn’t a normal thing to do.
Mark: Mark grew up extremely impoverished by western standards, in a Missouri trailer park, with a name long forgotten, simply nicknamed “The Links” due to its amount of chainlink fences. It used to be a place where allegedly uncontrollable dogs were kept and trained. It was shut down due to its abusive practices and turned into low-income housing. The person who runs the trailer park is not the same person who owned the land. That person is either gone or dead. It’s a trashy place, where stray cats run amok and people disappear every month because of all the shady characters roaming about. The neighborhood surrounding the trailer park is full of pawn shops, strange clubs and an old liquor store. There’s one church, of no specific denomination, with long, quiet services run by a very old man whose zest for preaching has long since disappeared. The park has become a haven for sex workers, petty criminals, substance abusers and hoarders.
Axel: If we go with the canon of Zoey raised him, Axel grew up in a liberal-by-Missouri-standards middle-class town, named Engleville, about 20 minutes away from the “welcome to Central City” sign where Zoey worked as a nurse. Zoey wanted to get away from Central for a bit and if she had had the opportunity, she would have taken him much further away. It’s not as boring or quaint as Mick Rory’s birth region, there’s about four churches, one of which is a Jewish synagogue, a hospital, schools that actually have a fairly decent amount of money, not a lot, but far more than the schools in say, Mark’s area. It was very common for teenagers to be alternative, like Axel turned out to be, mainly cause they got bored of the town and wanted something to control. Axel lived there until he was eighteen, tried going to college in Colorado, until his father convinced him to come back to Central so he could eventually become Trickster 2. Axel fully planned on coming back to CC after graduating but, it’s likely he wouldn’t have came back until much later since he actually quite enjoyed Colorado.
James: James was born in a picturesque little Italian village, bordering Florence called Culla Di Cristo, in English: Christ’s Cradle. There wasn’t much to the establishment, nothing but 176 houses, a general store, one tiny Roman Catholic Church, and a very strong sense of community. It was a very old fashioned place, there was no gas station, no bar or any sort of equivalent (though rumors are several of the village’s youth and town drunkards would sometimes meet in an abandoned barn nearby) and it was heaven and hell at the same time for little repressed queer boy James. When he was nine or ten, he and his family ended up immigrating to the United States when the circus they worked in decided there wasn’t anything left for them in Italy. They traveled all over the Midwest, Kansas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, before finding Central City, and deciding to stay there. James was 14.
Sam: Sam’s case is an interesting one. Sam grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He had the accent and everything. He ended up moving to Queens when he moved out because he couldn’t pay the rent on an apartment in Brooklyn, his mother honestly kept getting lucky every month, but still spent a lot of his time in Brooklyn. He worked there, all his friends were there, and it was worth the long drive to and from his old nine to five. He had picked up crime when he was fifteen, and that was always his night time gig, but over time, he started wanting bigger and bigger jobs and eventually started making more and more money. He met Rosa while she was waiting tables and decided he was gonna teach her crime. When he was in his mid twenties he and Rosa came very close to going to prison so they decided to move far, far away. They would jump from state to state, in fact living in Central permanently never ever occurred to them, it was just a place they were working when the particle accelerator hit.
Rosa: Rosa was a foster child in Albany. She was born to a young mother who could not physically, emotionally, mentally or financially take care of her. so she took the old fire department method, left the baby on a fire department doorstep with a little note explaining what the child’s name was and what to do with her. Rosa was put into the foster system, and never permanently adopted. She went through countless foster families, but stayed in Albany mostly the whole time, occasionally switching with NYC. She moved to New York City after becoming an adult to try to make it on broadway, since she had always had a talent for acting, a talent which would help her in her later career as a con artist.
Hartley: Hartley grew up in Central, to a family whose names were extremely well-known in Central, though his family owned a lake house by the Ozarks and they would spent summer weeks there.
Shawna: Shawna grew up in the Louisiana Bayou. She and her family were very low-income, but they ate a lot of fish and crayfish which they fished themselves which made providing easier on her mother and grandmother. They didn’t live in a town either, they lived in their own little home next to the lake, which was built by Shawna’s great grandmother. It was a household of all women, with Shawna’s two sisters, and her father dying a long time ago. Her kleptomania slowly spread to her slipping into crime entirely, and eventually she ended up burning the bridge that was her little southern home and her relationship with her mother too. She moved to Georgia first, then Kansas, then Missouri. She became a successful criminal, all the while losing her accent, and losing her old self.
