So I watched Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame last night and I had a thought.
Notre Dame being one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, I'm curious if Nocturne is going to adhere to the rule of vampires not being able to set foot on holy ground and if so, will Notre Dame Cathdral will be used as a point of sanctuary for our heroes at some point?
Castlevania vampires burn in sunlight and fear the Cross, but the animated series is pretty vague on whether or not consecrated ground or a house of worship is off limits. We see the Night Creatures are able to enter the Gresit Cathedral easily enough (among other chapel settings in multiple games,) but Alucard confirms they are unaffected by sunlight in Season 4, showing they don't have the same limitations as vampires. Trevor also makes a joke about catching fire since he's an excommunicate, so the idea of someone 'unholy' going up in flames within a church is not unheard of here.
In Season 2, the vampires all question whether or not running water will harm them. This is revisited in the final battle when the undead Bishop blesses the Danube. (Which...is that still holding up? Is the second longest river in Europe completely impassable to vampires?)
As far as I've personally seen, the anime Shiki is the only series I can think of that addresses the holy ground rule, so I think it would be interesting if Nocturne made use of that lore. Plus, it would be reminiscent of the games' save rooms, which are often small chapels or confessionals where the enemy can't follow the player.
That said, there's no real guarantee if Notre Dame or any other specific church or cathedral will make an appearance in the narrative. Actually, I'm almost positive the building the above gif is supposed to be the Palace of Versailles, home of the French court. Which seems to have been overrun by vampires, so...really wanting to know what happened there if that's the case.

Palace of Versailles

Aside from some of the windows...Versailles, maybe?
The original series used real locations present day Romania like Târgoviște, Brăila, Lindenfeld, Dănești, and Argeș, so I wouldn't be surprised if Nocturne followed that pattern with the Palace of Versailles, Paris, and maybe Notre Dame.

Kate Briquelet at The Daily Beast:
MAGA pastor Sean Feucht and a band of Christian nationalists are glomming on to campus protests against Israel’s war on Gaza, leading “United for Israel” marches at Columbia and the University of Southern California while professing their belief that the conflict is a harbinger of the “End Times” predicted in the Bible. On Wednesday night, Feucht’s followers and far-right extremists rallied outside USC with the help of a police escort—an image that stands in stark contrast to the LAPD officers in riot gear who previously arrested activists from the school’s pro-Palestinian camp. The Christian Zionist parade kicked off with Feucht performing contemporary worship music (“Our God is an awesome God”) and anti-LGBTQ speakers like preachers Lou Engle and Ché Ahn, who once crowed at a “Stop the Steal” rally: “We’re gonna rule and reign through President Trump and under the lordship of Jesus Christ.”
Feucht, looking every bit the part of a Jesus rocker in a black jean jacket, fired up the crowd with a concert before the march. “Lord, we stand together against hatred, bigotry, anti-semitism, violence that’s taken over this campus and the streets of the city,” Feucht said between songs. “God, I just pray today that America would see a different story tonight.” “Where they’ve seen division, they would see unity and joy,” added the 40-year-old Sammy Hagar-coiffed pastor, who once prayed over former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his wife Casey. Afterward, Fox News portrayed Feucht as a hero of sorts for the Jewish people. “We want Americans to see that we are fed up with this rot of anti-Semitism on the college campuses, and that we’re gathering together in unity, bringing prayer, bringing hope,” said Feucht, who’s risen to MAGA fame and riches after holding worship concerts flouting COVID rules in 2020.
The irony of divisive activists making up the “unity” flock didn’t seem to be lost on reporters and extremism researchers, including Kate Burns, Jeremy Lindenfeld, and Kelly Stuart, who documented the scene in real time. They estimated a few hundred participants showed up versus Feucht’s projection of “thousands.”
[...]
“There’s a veneer of interfaith, there’s a veneer of solidarity,” said Taylor, a senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies (ICJS). “I do interfaith dialogue for a living. These people are not doing interfaith dialogue. They’re doing Christian supremacy, but they’re cloaking it in the garb of interfaith solidarity.”
“If Sean Feucht is an enemy of anti-Semitism, why does he hang out with Proud Boys and QAnon supporters and conspiracy theorists at places that tolerate outright anti-Semitism like the ReAwaken America tour?” Taylor added. “Why does he invite far-right militia members to be security at his own events? Color me skeptical that Sean Feucht cares one whit about anti-Semitism.” (A Proud Boy and a Jan. 6 insurrectionist reportedly belonged to Feucht’s security team at his Oregon “Let Us Worship” event in 2021.) Feucht has also palled around with podcaster Elijah Schaffer, who has made anti-Semitic remarks along with his guest speakers like white supremacist Nick Fuentes. “Do you believe Jews disproportionately control the world institutions, banks, & are waging war on white, western society?” Schaffer asked in a 2023 Twitter poll.
[...] In New York, Feucht teamed up with conservative radio host Eric Metaxas, who, according to Media Matters, uses his platform to promote the belief that Christians should control the government, and once punched an anti-Trump protester in the face. A day before descending on the Big Apple, Feucht went live on Facebook and appeared almost giddy about the “end days.” “Yes, these are the end days,” Feucht said. “I know people say all the time, ‘Everyone’s saying it’s the end days.’ ‘Jesus said it was the end days 2000 years ago.’ Well, it is the end days, and we’re one day closer to the return of Jesus.” “And as that ramps up, we’re going to see a rise of evil, we’re going to see a rise of glory, and we’re gonna see a rise of hatred for the Jewish people.”
[...] Many evangelicals like Feucht believe in an End Times prophecy where Jews will return to Israel (and convert to Christianity) as part of Jesus’s Second Coming.
Far-right Christian nationalists such as Sean Feucht have traveled to various campuses where protests against the Gaza Genocide are happening to preach a right-wing pro-Israel Apartheid rally under the guise of an “interfaith rally.”

Summer Spice - Night at the Inn [Trevor/Sypha]
Today there is only a super short Summer Smut story with Trevor and Sypha.
I decided to fill in a kinda missing scene from canon. Aka their first night in Lindenfeld, when Trevor has to make up for his thoughtless comment about beer being better than sex.

A group of students calling themselves the Collective for the Liberation of Palestine at UCLA relaunched their solidarity encampment today.
Police line about 75-100 feet from encampment, no food being allowed in, protesters slowly gathering outside.
Looks like one of the expulsion strategies is starving/dehydrating student protesters.
As law enforcement and private security block food/water from getting into the encampment, right wing journalist Cam Higby teases protesters pleading for access to supplies.
When Mel Buer, Plastic Jesus and I tried communicating with people beyond the police line, CSC security guards illegally restricted both our communication and access to the space.
UAW rank and file celebrate the official calling of a strike at UCLA on Tuesday.
Officers lined up outside UCLA’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment with zip ties, riot helmets, and batons.
UCLA has issued a statement ordering protesters to disperse. “You are hereby notified…that your consent to remain on campus is withdrawn and all persons within Kerchoff Patio must leave the campus and depart the campus immediately or face disciplinary action and/or arrest.”
Things look pretty bare inside [the encampment] and officers in riot gear look to be lining up.
Pro-Palestinian protesters are on the roof of UCLA’s Kerckhoff hall and renamed it Bassel Al-Araj Hall, in honor of a Palestinian activist/author who was killed by the IDF in 2017.
Part of the police line has been pushed down and some protesters have advanced a few feet toward the encampment. The crowd here is getting bigger.
Tensions here are rising as pro-Palestinian protesters continue advancing toward UCLA’s Gaza Solidarity encampment.
Pro-Palestinian protesters have successfully pushed through a security line and have begun delivering supplies to protesters inside UCLA’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment.
Inside UCLA’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment. Tensions are high and the security line is moving to the perimeter of the encampment. Protesters and security getting physical per Mel Buer.
After hitting me from behind with her bike, CSC officer 408 demanded I “get off her bike.” When I explained “you’re on my ankle.” She responded “then get off your ankle.” Didn’t make a ton of sense, but whatever.
Here’s the scene just outside UCLA’s Palestine Solidarity Encampment. Protesters have pushed the security line basically up to the perimeter of the encampment.

1, 2 + 16 Netflix Castlevania
1: what originally drew me to it
i’m pretty sure you did. i don’t remember it perfectly but in 2020 when i finished watching BoJack Horseman i saw Castlevania was recommended to me and i remembered you saying it was really good so i gave it a go and DAMN was it fun.
2: what i like most and least about it
i love the personal journeys the characters go on. in particular Isaac’s self discovery and Trevor and Sypha’s uncovering of the cult in Season 3. after Dracula died, Isaac had to come up with a new purpose for his life and he really struggled to learn that there are actually people who are good and deserve to live, and watching him grapple with that every time someone was good to him and then someone else was mean to him was fascinating to watch. as for Trevor and Sypha, i loved their dynamic together and you could see the influence they were having on each other, which was fun. plus i just really like mysterious shit and the cult scratched that itch for me. i also loved that Trevor and Sypha weren’t able to save the people of Lindenfeld, and discovered how corrupt the Judge really was. it’s not super common to have the protagonists fail in shows like this and it was refreshing to see how fucking upset they were about it.
idk i know Season 3 has some haters but it really clicks with me for some reason.
what i like least about it? Season 4 was hot dog water. that shit felt like a fanfiction written by a teenager who didn’t appreciate almost every single character taking an L in the last season and wanted a cutesy “✨and everyone was happy ☺️ and held hands ❤️❤️ and were best friends 😌✨” ending. it sucked fat booty. AND they ruined my man Saint Germain!! he was so cool and mysterious and they turned him into a horny loser!! i know i said it in your tags already but what a fucking waste of Bill Nighy. Saint Germain deserved better. the entire season deserved better.
also people in this show swear like a bunch of 14 year olds and it’s not the most endearing thing ever but not really annoying enough to not sound nitpicky when i say it
16: a scene/moment that makes me really emotional every time
normally the answer to a question like this would be something that makes you cry or something but i never cry watching this show so instead i’m gonna go with one of my favourite emotions, excitement. And that shit’s gotta go to the fight scene with the demons and the Visitor in Season 3. i know the Dracula fight was very badass and emotionally compelling and i’m not downplaying its impact but holy shit have you seen the Season 3 fight?? Sypha finding super creative ways to obliterate the demons?? Trevor busting out both whips and going absolutely crazy shredding the Visitor?! and the huge music buildup and then he slashes it one last time snd it goes slow mo and the whips fucking explode and the animation does that thing where it only shows the outlines and the Visitor gets fucking OBLITERATED!!! THAT WAS SO FUUUUUUN YEAH BOYYYYY
good show, i’ll have to get onto Nocturne sometime soon
here's the link to the questions if you want

I find this especially interesting in the wider context of Trevor's life, which has prepared him for this in a way that neither Alucard nor Sypha have been. Alucard has barely known life beyond his parents, and what's happened to him is absolutely traumatizing, but he didn't grow up expecting this to be his life; it isn't a keystone of his identity. Sypha, for her part, is a dreamer. There's nothing wrong with that, but growing up with the Speakers, she's probably had the most healthy upbringing. She believes in what she does, but she, too, hasn't been confronted with it in the same way Trevor has.
Trevor's life has been plagued by tragedy. His family home was burned with his family in it, and even before that, he was being raised for this. He knows exactly how horrible this life can be in gruesome detail, and he still does it. He's hit rock bottom and had to pick himself back up. There's a resilience in his character that I think really feeds into the above moment with Death, because Trevor has stared Death in the face, had it dogging at his heels for most of his life. He is prepared for this fight in a way Sypha and Alucard aren't because he's spent his whole life fighting a hopeless fight.
What sticks out to me is the moment at the end of season 3 at the end of everything with Lindenfeld and Trevor tells Sypha they've spent the last few months living her life, and now they're living his. Everything in Trevor's life has told him this is a fight he will not win. There will always be more vampires, more night creatures, more corrupt officials. All he can ever do is hope to hold them back, but he still fights. And so, when it comes down to it, when confronted with an enemy that that no one can expect to win against, that no one else is even willing to try to oppose, there he is.
Trevor Belmont knows how to keep going when a conflict seems unwinnable, and when anyone else would back down, he stands up. He keeps going.
He fights.
The end of season 4 of Castlevania, is really interesting to me because of how Trevor Belmont reacts to Death. Sypha is awed by terror, she's too overwhelmed by Death to try anything, and Alucard (poor guy) is newly traumatized and also overwhelmed by Death, but Trevor looks at Death and says "No." He says, "I know what this is. I can stop this." He says, "This is still something I can fight." When any other person would back down, you can see him settle into his bones and stand his ground. Peel back everything else, and this is who Trevor Belmont is: someone who fights what no one else would dare attempt.
When most would give up, he gets to work.

Freedom in Castlevania
Tumblr media
On topic, I find surprisingly rarely explored in conversations, is how much season 3 of Castlevania focuses on the theme of freedom and what it mains to have that freedom taken from you through enslavement.
Admittedly it is a bit weird, because from the four storylines we follow, the theme shows up in three: In the Isaac storyline, the Styria storyline and the Alucard storyline. I love the Lindenfeld story, but it is somehow weird, how that the theme does not show up in that plot.
For Isaac it is there in a double way: For once, a good chunk of his motivation is rooted in him having his freedom and humanity taken as a child. But also, by the end of season 2, Dracula takes his freedom to save him.
In Styria it shows up, because it is also the core for Carmilla's motivation (having his freedom taken away by men and especially her sire), but of course, too, because the entire plot for Styria in season 3 is about Hector having his freedom taken and then finally being enslaved.
And in the Alucard storyline it shows up, because Taka and Sumi have been Cho's slaves - have been enslaved as children, which absolutely plays into the reason for their betrayal of Adrian.
It still feels weird, that the topic then does not get further discusses (at least outside of Isaac's dialogues with FlysEyes) in season 4.

"Do you want to start in Lindenfeld, then? The wagon is easy enough to steer. It can go anywhere we want," Trevor chuckled, thinking of Speakers and their stubborn ways. Sypha fit in with her people so well in that way, "We will start in Lindenfeld and go from there. We can track Speakers from where they help people. All the stubborn good you do," He teased, "And I'll take the victory of having my name listed first for once. Even if it was a slip."
“Magic Hands????”.
*Freezes your mug of ale. Again.
“You are hopeless Trevor Belmont “.
Tumblr media
Trevor looked at the frozen ale and frowned, shaking his tankard upside down, "Sypha. Magic Hands. Baby. Do you see how it is literal? Do you see how it isn't exactly a complement, but it isn't exactly an insult either. And besides. It isn't like I'm going to call you that. You're my Sypha. And I don't mean that I see you as a possession just," Trevor sighed and rubbed his eyes, "I'm making things worse, aren't I?"

On Saturday, 2 Dec 2023, "parents with school age children who believe in including children in the fight for Palestinian Liberation" called for a Children's March for Palestine in downtown Los Angeles. Organizers explained "the goal is 4000+ children [in attendance] in honor of the kids murdered in Gaza." The march started with a rally in Grand Park, which included the construction of an altar.
Photos 1-7 by Jeremy Lindenfeld, who says: "Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have not been losing momentum in Los Angeles. Thousands [were] out on the streets... demanding a free Palestine. One of the biggest demonstrations in a while."
