Propaganda
Linden Travers (The Lady Vanishes)—if you watch a lot of old English movies, Linden Travers is always turning up, making you go "wait, where have I seen her before?" She has insane cheekbones that could cut glass and this glassy, fragile way of holding herself—like she's eighteen seconds away from coming apart at the seams.
Devika Rani (Achhut Kanya)— Achhut Kanya (1936) is the only one of hers I've seen but hot DAMN
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

There are those who think that Alfred Hitchcock never surpassed The Lady Vanishes when it comes to the romantic comedy thriller. From the opening sequence of an obviously miniature Eastern European village to the concluding scene in which Miss Froy (May Whitty) delightedly reunites with Iris (Margaret Lockwood) and Gilbert (Michael Redgrave), it's an utterly engaging movie. If I happen to prefer North by Northwest (1959), it may be only because Cary Grant is a greater movie star than Redgrave and James Mason a more suavely subtle villain than Paul Lukas, and of course the thrills -- the crop-dusting scene, the Mount Rushmore chase -- are done more deftly (not to say expensively) and with greater sophistication. Because virtually everything in The Lady Vanishes works: There's real chemistry between Redgrave and Lockwood; Whitty is a delight as the geriatric spy; the notion of a song being the MacGuffin is witty; Caldicott (Naunton Wayne) and Charters (Basil Radford) are the perfect ambiguously gay duo; and there's a nun in high heels who pauses to fix her makeup. It also has a genuinely serious subtext: 1938 was a year fraught with tension, and when Caldicott and Charters are preoccupied with getting the news from England, our first thought is that it has to do something with the threat of war and not with a cricket test match. The satiric glances at the insular Brits are also underscored by the relationship of Todhunter (Cecil Parker) and his mistress (Linden Travers), escaping to a place where nobody knows them to conduct their affair, and even by Gilbert's blithe preoccupation with collecting information about the native folk dances of the Bandrikans, who might indeed be next after the Czechs to be swallowed up by the Third Reich.

No Orchids for Miss Blandish (Black Dice, 1948)
"Say, Doc, what're you gonna do with your cut?"
"Oh, much the same as you, Flyn, I expect - 'cept that mine'll bathe every day instead of alternate Thursdays."
"Hey, what d'ya mean?"
"And you, Edward, my boy? Does this rosy prospect, this rich and heartening future, displease you?"
"I never count my chickens till I've wrung their necks."

There’s precisely one sequence in No Orchids for Miss Blandish (1948), St John Legh Clowes’ grisly gangster film adaptation of James Hadley Chase’s novel, where the stars align and everything comes perfectly together. It happens about a third of the way through the film and centers on a bone-chilling confrontation between two criminals.
The first, a gutter crook who orchestrated the kidnapping of pampered heiress Miss Blandish (Linden Travers), the second, Slim Grisson (Jack La Rue), a cold-blooded member of the Grisson gang, one of New York City’s most feared crime syndicates. After bungling the kidnapping so disastrously it devolved into a triple homicide leaving Blandish’s fiancé and two of his criminal accomplices dead on a country road, the crook spirits his victim away to a hidden cabin where he tries to rape her. But he’s found out by Slim who moves in to snatch Blandish—and her ransom—away from him.
Showing up to the cabin with a coterie of thugs, Slim sits on a table and starts rolling two black dice into a dish. The sound of the dice is deafening, maddening. Click-clack. Click-clack. CLICK-CLACK. And all the while the crook begs, yells, and pleads with Slim to have a heart and leave him with a piece of the action. Click-clack. Just one of her jewels! Click-clack. Please, anything!! CLICK-CLACK. Broken, defeated, the crook sobs a surrender and turns to leave. But at the last moment he spins, desperately pulling out a pistol. With a flash, one of Slim’s lackeys blasts him to pieces and he collapses to the ground as dead as his hare-brained buddies.
This scene is a masterwork of tension, dread, and atmosphere. Slim’s quiet, almost insouciant cruelty; the unflinching long camera shot and expert character blocking; the uncaring click-clacking of the dice like the ticking of a clock counting down to the kidnapper’s pitiless doom. All of these blend together magnificently into magnetic movie magic.

Margaret Lockwood | Michael Redgrave | The Lady Vanishes (1938) Alfred Hitchcock directed
The Lady Vanishes is a 1938 British mystery thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave.
