For the fic writing asks:
36. Which fic are you proudest of?
41. Who’s your favorite character you’ve written?
72. What’s your favorite writing compliment you’ve received?
And only if you fancy it:
34. How much of your personal life/experience do you include in your fics?
36. Which fic are you proudest of?
That's a tough one, but I think in the end it's a short Deus Ex genfic called Small Kindnesses: https://archiveofourown.org/works/20010490
It started off as an experimentation with personal style and ended up being something that keeps giving people warm hugs when they need it.
41. Who’s your favorite character you’ve written?
Author: nervously eyes the cast of characters in her head, all staring at her Well, um, obviously you are all near and dear to my heart, except the ones who aren't...
Violette: hrmphs
MacReady: Yeah, get on with it, mate.
Lillian: yawns, checking a slate
Author: ...but if I had to pick just one of you as my favorite... whines This is really hard!
Cora: No it's not! You know the answer already! Me! *stands next to Author, hands on hips, glaring down the rest of the characters in Author's headspace.
Author: gestures helplessly at the 12-year-old force of nature Her. Definitely her.
72. What’s your favorite writing compliment you’ve received?
That one I can't point to a single comment, but I can point to a single category of comment. That I made you, the reader, feel. That it was like a warm hug. That I tore your heart out. That you wanted to kill a character. That I reached into your soul and evoked a feeling. That's the absolute best. Don't get me wrong, I love when people call out bits that work especially well for them, but for me, the best compliments are "My teeth are full of cavities." "This made my heart melt." "This made me laugh so hard." (Comedy is hard!)
Because that's what I want to do. I want to reach out and pull out some emotions.
And only if you fancy it:
34. How much of your personal life/experience do you include in your fics?
Probably too much! laughing I've said before, Cait is a love letter to all the people who grew up in less-than-ideal circumstances, who were made to feel like freaks or weirdos or outcasts or aliens, abused and neglected, hurt over and over and still got back up on our hind legs and kept going. And for that matter, so's my Deus Ex OC Sloane. (My OCs rarely have loving birth families; there's a reason for that.)
The story of people who feel like they're on the wrong side of human, who don't think they can be loved, or deserve to be loved, or maybe even don't quite know how to love... and they find out they're wrong, that they're loved and lovable and capable of loving? That's my story. And I think it's a powerful one, and a very human one.
My life/experience shows up in smaller ways, too. I think you were the one to mention the gun safety bit in the Cora snippet I posted earlier; that came directly out of my childhood. I'm a programmer IRL, and that knowledge and expertise sneaks through in some ways, too. I am the sum of my experiences, and I mine it all for my art.

Lillian Gish in The White Sister (Henry King, 1923)
Cast: Lillian Gish, Ronald Colman, Gail Kane, J. Barney Sherry, Charles Lane, Juliette La Violette, Gustavo Serena. Screenplay: George V. Hobart, Charles E. Whittaker; titles: Will M. Ritchey, Don Bartlett; based on a novel by Frances Marion Crawford and a play by Crawford and Walter C. Hackett. Cinematography: Roy F. Overbaugh. Art direction: Robert M. Haas. Film editing: Duncan Mansfield.
Henry King was a director of solid competence whose career extended from 1915 to 1962, amassing credits on IMDb for directing 116 films. Even so, his movies are not particularly memorable. Who, today, seeks out The Song of Bernadette (1943) or Wilson (1944), two of the "prestige" films he directed for 20th Century-Fox? In his great auteurist survey The American Cinema: Directors and Directions, 1929-1968, the best Andrew Sarris has to say about the movies directed by King is that they display a "plodding intensity." King was, in Sarris's words, "turgid and rhetorical in his narrative style," and that certainly holds true for The White Sister. Lillian Gish had a great rapport with the camera, able to suggest an entire range of emotions with her eyes alone -- hence the many close-ups she is given in her films. But King, filming on location in Italy and Algeria, is more interested in the settings than in the people inhabiting them. (Roy Overbaugh's cinematography is one of the film's virtues.) Nor does he seem interested in moving the story along, dragging it out to a wearisome 143 minutes. When Prince Chiaromonte (Charles Lane), the father of Angela (Gish) and her wicked half-sister, the Marchesa di Mola (Gail Kane), goes out fox-hunting, we're pretty sure that disaster is about to happen. But King stretches out the hunt so long that when Chiaromonte is killed the accident has no great emotional impact. And when Angela takes her vows as a nun, effectively preventing her from marrying Captain Severini (Ronald Colman), the man she loves but thinks is dead, King gives us every moment of the ceremony, trying to generate suspense by occasional cuts to Severini's ship steaming homeward. There's also an erupting volcano at the picture's end, but King fails to stage or cut it for real suspense. Gish is fine as always, though she's not called on to do much but look pious and to go cataleptic when Angela receives the news of Severini's supposed death. Colman is handsome but not much else, and Kane's villainy seems to be signaled by her talking out of the side of her mouth, as if channeling Dick Cheney many years in advance.

The White Sister (1923)
Director: Henry King Writers: Francis Marion Crawford (novel) George V. Hobart Release Date: 1925 (Austria) LILLIAN GISH! What a flood of pleasant memories rushes along at the mere mention of her name! YOU sympathized with her in "The Birth of a Nation." YOU suffered with her in "Hearts of the World." YOU pitied her in "Broken Blossoms." YOU cried over her in "Orphans of the Storm." YOU actually cheered her in "Way Down East." Now when you see her in Henry King's production of "The White Sister" you will be thrilled, captivated, and exalted as never before. A young woman becomes a nun when she believes her sweetheart has been killed, but things get complicated when he returns alive. "The White Sister," the picture recently finished by Lillian Gish in Rome. Sorrento and other Italian places, was unfolded last night upon the screen of the Forty-fourth Street Theatre before a most interesting assembly, which included persons prominent in society, distinguished politicians, well-known authors and writers, screen celebrities and heads of the motion picture industry. It seemed an occasion which revealed the standing of the films possibly more than any other photoplay presentation. The production itself is a notable one, an artistic effort on which the producers seem to have leaned backward to cling to the sterling worth of the picture, which was entirely made in Italy under the direction of Henry King. It was a difficult task to undertake as it is a love story with little or no comedy relief, and one in which the heavy part is taken by a woman. The picturesque surroundings in most of the scenes lend some contrast to the story of a great love between Angela Chiaromonte, played by Lillian Gish, and Captain Giovanni Severi (Ronald Colman). It is a serious, enthralling narrative of a young girl who, believing her fiancé dead, takes the veil as a nus???. A remarkable and successful effort at characterization is made in several instances by the director and the players. The latter actually appear to live the parts they enact on the screen. There is also pictured a beautiful contrast between the lives of the Captain and Angela—the former having a great adventure and the latter living for a time in a modest???, quiet way in an Italian town, with the love of Giovanni as a solace. Despite the fact that this is a story of emotions and tears, Miss Gish's acting is always restrained. She obtains the full effect in every situation, being, as the Italians say, sympatico in all sequences. Giovanni, it is true, is not brought out in a very good light at the inception of the story, as he has had an affair with the Marchesa di Mola, which he tells her cannot continue. Angela, hated by the Marchesa, falls in love with Giovanni, who immediately reciprocates her affection. There is a splendid series of scenes showing the élite of that section of the world following the hounds at a hunt. Prince Chiaromonte, Angela's father, is thrown from his horse, and eventually dies. This sequence is a thrilling one as the photographs show the open country and the pack of hounds, with the men and women on their mounts. The Prince had desired to unite his family with the del Ferice family by the marriage of his daughter to Alfredo, but these plans are upset by the stealing and burning of the Prince's will by the Marchesa. So for a brief time the path of love seems free to Giovanni and Angela. Suddenly Giovanni receives orders to take an expedition to Africa. Here there are some realistic scenes of Arabs, the desert and camels. The small band under Giovanni is set upon and, according to the news received in Italy soon afterward, all are slain. Angela is plunged into a state of hopeless grief by the report of the death of Giovanni. There seems to be no hope and she is taken to a hospital, where the white nuns nurse her. An artist paints a picture of Giovanni, and Angela is seen patting the head on the painting and kissing the face. Hope abandoned, after talking with Mgr. Saracinesca Angela decides that she wants to do something to help in the world and she becomes a novitiate and finally is "wedded to the Church." The last step precludes her ever giving up the veil, of which she is warned. "Well! Hello everyone~! My name is Lillian Violette, and I'm a teacher of Beacon Academy. It's amazing that I'm here to talk with all of you, and any questions that you may have I'll answer as best as I can~!"
She politely bows, before standing straight, adjusting her gloves, and giving an overly excited grin. Fire in her violet eye, she tilts her head.
"Shall we?"

Chapter 3
“Congratulations on all of our students at Beacon Academy, and welcome each and every new team of Huntsmen and Huntresses.” The students began to applaud, new students excited to be there and older students welcoming the newbies. With gloved hands, Lillian clapped with a soft smile on her face as she let it sink in. She was at Beacon Academy, learning to become a huntress to protect the world and fight back against evil. She felt kind of like a superhero in training.
“Well, that was quite the ceremony.” Looking to her Team Leader Travis, she excitedly nodded.
“Yeah, honestly it felt pretty inspiring. Oh, by the way. I’m Lillian. We never really got to introduce ourselves before the ceremony.” She offered her hand to the Red Panda Faunus, returning his friendly smile and gladly shaking his hand.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Lillian. I still can’t believe I’m part of a team. I hope it’s alright that I’m the leader...especially for what I am.”
“For what you are? Come on man.” The student named Ryker spoke up, arms crossed with a colder look in his eyes.
“We don’t care that you’re a Faunus. You’re our team leader, that’s the important part here. So, make sure to act like it. Alright?” Travis blinked, shyly nodding with a smile.
“Of course, thank you!” While heading out of the crowded room, Lillian curiously looked to her third teammate, who before this stayed completely silent.
“Hey, I’m Lillian.” The boy covered one of his eyes with snow white hair, but just underneath the bangs she noticed signs of scarring. She couldn’t quite see it all, but it looked a bit like claw marks.
“I’m...Varian.”
“Nice to meet you Varian~! I’m glad to have you on the team. We all may be strangers now, but I bet we’ll get along just nicely.” Varian stared at her for a moment, before his eyes moved to the floor.
“Do you really think so? All of us?”
“Of course~! Teams have to work together you know. By the time we all graduate, we’ll practically be family~!” The word family seemed to make Varian smile, a rose colored tint forming on his cheeks.
“That sounds nice.” While walking out with her team, Lillian caught a glimpse of quite the group of people. There were plenty of teams that held all sorts of unique and eye-catching people, but this one really caught her eye more than the rest. A very pretty girl wearing a white cloak, and beautiful silver eyes. A blond guy who seemed to hold the sun in his hands, not to mention the puns she could actually hear from where she stood. The next two seemed related, twins maybe. Both wore black hair and crimson eyes and carried a look that said they were uncomfortable here. As if they didn’t know what to do about their current situation. Seeing the weapon carried by the boy twin though made her stare for a moment. It stood out, something about it she couldn’t quite place. She really liked it though.
“Hey Lily, are you alright?” She heard Travis’s voice, but her eyes didn’t leave the group. It was when her eyes suddenly met the boy’s crimson ones that her face matched in hue and she looked towards Travis.
“Yeah! Sorry, there’s just so much going on.”
“You look like a tomato.” Ryker pointed out bluntly.
“Aw, it’s alright Lily. Let’s check out our dorm while we can. Figure out sleeping arrangements.”
“Yeah, okay.” Lillian glanced back over her shoulder once more towards the group, this time there was no doubt the boy had caught her, as he was now staring at her curiously. She felt her face flush, and shyly waved with a friendly smile. He didn’t move, and instead his gaze was brought back to his team who had gotten his attention for something. With that Lillian followed her team to their shared dorm room.
~~~~
A few days pass and classes are starting up smoothly, well...mostly. It seems the teachers are having a fun time trying to keep some of the teams from misbehaving. A few were just troublemakers, others just seemed to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Lillian had no idea where He played in this, but hearing the laughter of multiple students and then seeing a blur of someone disappear down the hallway gave her a bad feeling. Peeking past the corner, the blond kid from team STRQ was laughing and fist bumping a few kids.
“Oh man Tai that was hilarious!”
“How the hell did you get him to wear the girl’s uniform?”
“Apparently he’s never worn a school uniform before; told him it was a Kilt and that it was totally normal.” Lillian stood there for a minute, thinking before turning and following where she saw the blur leave to. That Tai kid probably didn’t mean it to be bad, but it was Mean. After a few minutes she noticed a closed door with the lights off, but could hear the slightest of grumbles from inside.
“I shouldn’t have listened to him, what was I thinking!? Raven was right…” Standing at the doorway, Lillian pressed her knuckles to the door and knocked a few times. Silence. She knocked again a little louder.
“Go Away Tai.” She swallowed softly.
“It’s not Tai…are you okay?” There was silence once again. This time he seemed to pretend he wasn’t in there.
“...Hey, what that Tai kid did was really mean, but I don’t think he meant it that way. I think he’s just an idiot.”
“...Oh yeah? And how would you know? Are you friends with him or something?”
“Not really. I share a couple of classes with your team. You’re….Qrow, right?”
“...Yeah, that’s me. Who’s asking?”
“Oh, I just want to make sure I got it right. It’d be a little embarrassing if I called you the wrong name. Talk about a horrible first impression. Um...I’m Lillian, by the way.” After a minute or so of silence, Qrow spoke up.
“So what did you follow me for? A picture? Trust me, I’m sure you can talk to a few kids and find plenty of them.”
“Oh no, that’s not it. I just wanted to come make sure you were okay. You seemed upset.” An audible scoff came from the room.
“You don’t say? You must be some kind of wizard.” Lillian slowly sat down on the ground, seeing the small crack under the door. Pulling out her scroll, she opened up an app to play tic tac toe, and then slid it under the door.
“Wanna play? You can go first.”
“...I’m not….good with games.”
“Well lucky for you Tic Tac Toe isn’t really a game of stakes, just some X’s and O’s on a grid.” Lillian sat patiently in front of the door, before the sound of movement peaked her interest. Suddenly, the scroll slid back under the door, a game started. Lillian smiled and took her turn, sliding it back under the door. It was like this for several rounds, content silence growing between the two as game after game was played. Most of the rounds were tied, but it seemed to lighten the mood.
“Told you I’m not good at these kinds of games.”
“That’s okay, to be honest the game was just an excuse to keep you company.” A soft chuckle came from the door.
“You’re pretty stubborn.”
“Yup, as a mule. My ma says that’s my best quality.”
“Heh, I don’t know. It’s pretty annoying.”
“Yeah, I get that a lot.” Some more movement was heard, but this time it was followed up by the unlocking of a door. Lillian pulled herself from the ground, patting off her uniform skirt and waiting to see the voice from the other side of the door. There he was, the boy with eyes like rubies and hair like a black bird’s feathers. He was wearing a combination of the girl and boy’s uniforms, a button up top and a skirt that came to his knees in length.
“Look I know I look stupid..”
“Not really.”
“...What?” He looked to Lillian as she shrugged.
“Would it be weird if I said you had nice legs?”
“Coming from a complete stranger? Absolutely.” She rubbed her head apologetically.
“Coming from the girl I just played Tic Tac Toe with for an hour? Not as much.” He seemed to smile, and something in Lillian’s chest jumped. She offered her hand to him, shyly smiling.
“I’m Lillian, Lillian Violette.”
“Qrow Branwen. So, you really think I have nice legs?” She giggled and nodded a bit.
“Yeah, not many guys can pull off a skirt. You make it work.” For the first time, she heard a real chuckle out of him. She felt she did an almost impossible feat for some reason, and she felt an overwhelming feeling of pride and joy watching him smile.
“Thanks.”
“Not a problem. So, you wanna play a game that isn’t a free app on my scroll? Maybe some video games?” He seemed hesitant, rubbing his neck while leaning on his heels.
“I ugh…”
“Or if you’d like I can help you get back at Tai for being a jerk.”
“...You know what? I’ll take you up on that.” Lillian smiled brightly and began to walk with him down the hall.
“By the way, sorry that I stared at you at orientation. I saw your weapon and I was really impressed.”
“So that Was you! I thought you looked familiar with those purple eyes of yours.”
“Yeah, I noticed your weapon can transform between a sword and a scythe. That’s really cool, the scythe part reminds of of The Grimm Reaper.” He suddenly seemed to gain a sparkle in his eyes.
“You Know about the Grimm Reaper!?”
“Of course, she’s amazing!”
“I know! I actually designed a lot of my weapons based on hers! She’s so cool. You’re the first one to really recognize it.”
“What can I say? I’m a fan, and I can identify good taste.” The two continued to talk weapons on their way back, and anyone who laughed or openly made fun of Qrow ‘Somehow’ slipped and fell. It seemed Qrow was noticing it, but didn’t ask why and almost looked embarrassed about it. Throughout the day, it turns out lots of other female students agreed with Lillian that Qrow had nice legs and totally made the skirt work.
“What’s with girls and my legs anyway~? I’m starting to think I really Do have nice legs~”
“Trust me, if a bunch of different girls are all agreeing and no one has said otherwise, it’s one hundred percent true.” A genuine chuckle came out of him as they went on the hunt for Taiyang. After some time, and asking a bunch of different students, they eventually figured out just where he was. Peeking passed the corner, Lillian watched as Taiyang was attempting to get to know Qrow’s twin sister better (failing miserably might I add). Humming to herself, Lillian turned towards Qrow with a soft smile.
“Do you want to see something that I can do?”
“Ugh…?”
“It’s nothing too bad, just promise me you won’t go around telling everyone. I want to keep my semblance on the down low.” Qrow hesitantly nodded and watched over Lillian’s head as she seemed to begin focusing on the scene in front of her. He picked up on her mumbling under her breath as she seemed to whisper to herself. Tai who was attempting to pose coolly while talking to Raven suddenly lost his balance, taking a few steps back only to step right into a mop bucket left a few feet behind him. With a loud sploosh and ting Taiyang was now on the floor sitting in a puddle of soapy mop water, and a student holding a mop now seemed very unamused. Raven however, for the first time Lillian’s ever seen, cracked a smile and covered her mouth quietly laughing to herself. Qrow’s eyes widened and felt his chest tighten. Pulling his eyes from the scene he pressed his back to the wall they were hiding behind and let his mind race with thoughts. What was that? Was that her semblance? Does she have bad luck like him? Was that even possible? If they were both bad luck would that man their semblances combined could be even Worse than usual!? His heart began to pound in his head as he began to worry himself into a path of no return. Lillian turning with a proud smile only dropped it instantly when she saw how he was taking it.
“Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t think you’d react like that! Oh god, um he’s okay! I promise I don’t use it to hurt people or anything, it’s okay!” Qrow looked to her with disbelief.
“It’s okay??? IT’S OKAY!?” He didn’t know how to react, running his fingers through his hair and now staring at the floor.
“I mean, yeah...I have control over it so it’s not anything bad. I just have to be mindful of what I think.” That’s what made Qrow freeze suddenly. Control over...what?
“Control…? You have...control over your bad luck?” Lillian’s brows furrowed at his words.
“Bad Luck? Is that what you think it is?”
“So you...don’t have bad luck semblance?”
“What? No! No no, did you think? No, my semblance is a little different from that.” Qrow seemed to instantly relax, still a slight tremble in his chest as adrenaline still ran through him.
“Then...what was that?” Lillian looked around, before slowly taking his wrist and leading him down an empty part of the school. With the shell shock he was still recovering from he sort of just let her lead him wherever. Once they were completely alone, Lillian leaned against the wall and let out a soft sigh.
“My Semblance is...well we call it Mischief. You know how there’s always those low chance possibilities of something happening? Like tripping on nothing, or getting an extra prize in the cereal box. You know, very rare but still possible options that can happen? A lot of people put them in the category of good luck and bad luck because it seems Luck has some sort of say of the possibility of it happening. Well, in a weird way I’m...in between? I don’t have overwhelming luck, good or bad, I can sort of...make things happen. As long as it’s a possible thing that Can happen with the given circumstance I can Make it happen. But I have to know enough about it to make it happen. Like how Tai fell in the bucket. I saw a student mopping, saw him trying to impress Raven, and recognized the imbalanced pose he was doing while talking to her. It all came together like a child’s puzzle piece. I can’t do it all the time, but stuff like that is the easiest way. I prefer tripping since it’s always very possible for someone to lose their balance or just trip on air.” Lillian watched Qrow’s expression of disbelief, feeling herself become worrisome and embarrassed.
“I know it’s weird, trust me I know…”
“Yeah...you’re right that is weird..” Looking down Lillian seemed to softly grip her arm.
“...Weird’s good.” Perking up, her eyes met with his ruby ones, and her cheeks matched in color.
“Y-Yeah?”
“Yeah...Honestly it’s kind of cool you have control over that. It’s like you have control over Fate in a way.”
“I wouldn’t say that. I have to see it to have any control over it. So if someone sneak attacks me and I don’t have any location on them I can’t do anything. It’s pretty much a ‘I Either Have To Be There’ sorta thing or a ‘I Have To Know The Person Pretty Well’ thing.”
“So you’d be able to make something happen to me even though you couldn’t see me?”
“I mean, if I knew enough about you and whatever you were doing along with where you were. The best I could do is make you trip.”
“Still...that’s kind of both cool and freaky.”
“Yup, heard the freaky one before. Cool is new, thanks.” The two relaxed around each other, finally smiling this soft almost trusting smile. After a few minutes of silence, Lillian cleared her throat and touched her incredibly warm neck.
“So do you...wanna go play some video games?”
“Sure, you’re not gonna cheat by making my controller stop working are you?”
“Cross my heart.” They began walking back down the hall in silence. Stuffing his hands in his pockets, Qrow glanced over towards Lillian. She was only up to his shoulder in height, and only now did he notice the weapons wrapped around her hands that resembled retracted claws in a box over her knuckles.
“Hey so um...are you gonna ask about...my semblance?” He felt incredibly stupid for bringing it up, and almost instantly regretted it. What if she was afraid of him or would treat him differently after knowing? Glancing up at him, Lillian gave a soft patient smile.
“You don’t have to tell me. Semblances are really personal parts of you, and while others are very open to telling everyone they meet about it, I can understand not wanting to do that. If you want to tell me you can, but I’m not going to make you if you aren’t comfortable with that. So, it’s okay. Just, you know, don’t worry about it. I’m sure one day it’ll come up, but we don’t have to rush it. We did just officially meet today.” Oh that’s right, this girl and him Did just technically meet today. They’ve had classes together, but never really talked. Besides it’s only been at most a week since all this started. Weird. How come he was already so...relaxed with her? Still, he was glad she didn’t push the idea of him telling her his semblance. She seemed to understand enough that some things needed to be kept personal. At least until there’s a strong enough bond. What was he saying? He was only supposed to be here until he was a Huntsman and then go back to the village with his sister. Bring back the knowledge of Huntsmen and Huntresses. Nothing else.
“Hey, I’ve got a few different games to choose from, got any favorites?” Her voice brought him back, and his eyes met her as a sideways glance.
“I um...I don’t...know…” He trailed off, embarrassed to admit he doesn’t know much about this place, or video games for that matter. Technology is still really jarring to him.
“Oh, I gotcha~! Let’s start out with something easy then, a fighting game should work. It’ll be a one on one sort of game. Like sparring, but virtually. Come on I’ll show you.” This girl was really patient with him, and reminded him of his team. Summer and Tai mostly. Qrow smiled and followed Lillian’s lead, ignoring the girls complimenting his legs and the guys laughing about Taiyang who was now walking through the halls with very soaked pants.  Once they got back to her dorm that she shared with her team, he awkwardly found himself meeting all of them. He recognized them from his class, now that he thought about it. It wasn't often a Faunus was made a team leader, not to mention the entire group seemed to have a strange unspoken rule between them. Like a bunch of older brothers protecting their little sister. He could feel the faunus's eyes on him the entire time, and it made him even more uncomfortable. It was only when Lillian quite literally kicked them out of the room and set up the video games that Qrow began to relax. The rest of the day they tried different games, Lillian teaching Qrow the controls and basic rules.
"Hey, Nice~! You're getting the hang of it!" Qrow sat confused as the screen said he won. He literally had no idea how he won, but it was exhilarating. Looking to his left, Lillian smiled and laughed having a good time. The bright smile reminded him of a flower in spring. He felt his face warm as he forced himself to look away.
~~~~
With each passing day Lillian began to find herself getting more at home. All these different students are all looking to do around the same thing, becoming stronger to help the world be better. To fight the evil in the world and save the innocents. Months go by and Lillian has really gotten the hang of the classes, not to mention she finally feels as if she really gets her team. They were just getting back from a mission when Lillian looked throughout the crowd of students all coming back from missions and classes.
“We should probably go and tell the professor about the outcome of our training mission.”
“You should probably tell Lillian that.”
“What??” Travis turned only to see his teammate Lillian gone. Lillian was zooming through the crowds of people and jumping to get a better view of the crowd. With her height it appeared she was drowning in the amount of students, hopping to keep air in her lungs. She could kind of see them, with each hop she could locate them and then get closer.
“Qrow~!” The ravenette stopped mid step, about to follow his team to lunch when he heard the familiar voice. Looking behind him he stared towards the ocean of people.
“Qrow, you coming?” Tai called out, but Qrow didn’t move. He saw a sudden head pop up from the waves and a small smile formed.
“In a second.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets and waited for the head to pop up once again, but closer. They made eye contact with one another and that seemed to cause more of a smile. When Lillian noticed he was waiting for her she sped up, crawling out of the crowd and stopping just a few feet from where he stood. She caught her breath, and smiled looking at him.
“Hey…” He smirked a little.
“Hey~ Welcome back~”
“Lily~!” Summer ran over and wrapped her arms around Lillian quickly. She laughed and wrapped her arms around her in return.
“Summer~! Good to see you!” Lillian excitedly talked with team STRQ after not seeing them for a week, happily joking with them and catching up.
“So hey we were heading to lunch, want to head over?”
“I’ll actually meet you guys there, I pretty much just ditched my team to come say hi. Gotta report our mission to the professor.” Summer, Tai, and Raven all left towards the cafeteria, but Qrow stood there patiently waiting.
“So, how was your mission?” Lillian smiled and took a step towards him.
“It was...interesting.”
“You’re telling me!” Lillian jumped and took a step back when her teammates appeared behind her.
“This girl is crazy! Leaped onto the back of a Goliath Grimm.” Varian spoke with a huge grin. Qrow’s eyes widened and looked to the now embarrassed Lillian.
“I might have fallen out of the tree-”
“It was incredibly dangerous and she almost got seriously hurt.” Travis spoke with arms crossed and tail swishing.
“Buuut because of that Ryker was able to identify it’s weak spot and we took it out no problem. It looked amazing!” The two began to argue about whether it was super cool or dangerous, and Lillian took a step towards Qrow. Qrow looked at her  with a still astonished look.
“Did you seriously leap on a Goliath?” Lillian rubbed her neck with a red face.
“We were hiding in the trees, a branch snapped under me and I panicked. I didn’t want to fall straight down so I leaped forward and used my semblance to land on it’s back. Then I was basically bull riding this Grimm while my team had to basically save me.” Qrow had to suppress the chuckle imagining her riding this wild grimm like a bull.
“Only You~”
“Well we need to go report to ole teach, you coming Lily?” Lillian looked between her teammates and Qrow, indecisive.
“Ummm…” Ryker appeared behind the two and set his hands on his teammate’s shoulders.
“Can’t you see she’s obviously wanting  to talk with Qrow, alone? Come on, let’s go. He led the two away as they complained about being dragged away, Lillian was blushing heavily, staring awkwardly at the ground as all the students now seemed to spread out and leave them alone in the hall. There was a silence between them for a while, before Qrow finally chuckled and closed the space between them.
“They’re a handful aren’t they~?” Lillian smiled softly.
“Not as much as a handful as you~” Qrow playfully scoffed.
“Brat~
“Takes one to know one~” Lillian wrapped her arms around him and hugged him, Qrow held her close for a second, just sighing.
“So was Ryker right? Do you have something to talk about?”
“Well, I didn’t know if it was time..” Qrow pulled her away a bit to look at her. She sighed and bit her lip.
“I know we’re trying to keep this...on the downlow, but...there’s that dance coming up…” Seeming to understand, Qrow looked to the side.
“I don’t know...I’m not really into stuff like that.”
“I know, we don’t have to go as a couple. I just thought it might be fun. It’s your choice though.” Qrow hummed a bit, shifting his weight a bit.
“I’ll….think about it.” Lillian nodded.
“I appreciate you doing that, no matter what the outcome.”
“Yeah yeah, come here~” Lillian laughed as Qrow held her and spun her a bit, lifting her off the ground and burying his face in her shoulder. It had been a solid week since Qrow had even seen her, let alone hold her. It was a good thing though, so his semblance couldn’t affect her as much. Not to mention that mischief semblance of hers helps immensely. He wondered if it was about time he told her in detail what his semblance even was. It was only three weeks since they secretly began dating, but the fact he got in a relationship without telling them seemed a bit selfish. He bit his lip, just holding her for a moment and sighing,
“Is something wrong?” Shit. He grumbled a bit and pulled away to look at her.
“You’re way too perceptive.” She stuck out her tongue.
“Come on, what’s wrong?” Staring into her sparkling purple eyes he couldn’t help himself. For the past several months she’s been there for him when he needed it, and hasn’t asked for anything in return. She never tried to fix his problems, and never asked for too many details if he was uncomfortable or didn’t want to talk. She was just there for him. He couldn’t keep hiding this from her, she didn’t deserve it. While in thought, Qrow moved some of her hair from her face while still staring into her eyes,
“...I think it’s time I tell you in detail about my semblance.” Qrow walked with Lillian to a more disclosed location, just in case anyone walked in on their conversation. Qrow felt more comfortable this way, and Lillian was willing to make sure he was comfortable for this. She really was thoughtful to him. Qrow brought Lillian to the empty classroom they first met at and sat with her on the floor. He began to go into detail about his Bad Luck Semblance, how dangerous it was for him to be around anyone for too long because he couldn’t really control who it affected. Anyone in a general radius of him would possibly get affected by him, and that scared him when it came to his friends or her. When he finally finished he was holding his head and refusing to make eye contact with her. What if she became afraid of him? What if after he told her all this she decided it would be best that they stayed away from each other? He was so scared, trembling a little in place.
“Guess you could say I’m a Bad Luck Charm.” His voice shook a little, and that instantly scared him more. He was already so attached to her that the idea of her rejecting him for his semblance tore him apart. He waited for it, waited for her to apologize and leave him behind. Instead however, she gently reached for his trembling hand and held it.
"...Did I ever tell you...about the first time I ever experienced my Semblance?" He blinked and looked up towards her, shaking his head a bit.
“No, you never did…” She gave a saddened smile, squeezing his hand a little tighter and sighing. Her usually calm and joyful demeanor was gone, she looked so upset. Using her free hand she ran her fingers through her hair, now her turn to tell a story.
"When I was young, a bunch of kids used to mess with me a lot. Always these boys pushing me and pulling my hair. Knocking down my block towers, you know the stereotypical boy messing with girl stuff. Everyone would always say it was normal and that I should just ignore it. Well...one day...I can't remember just Why I was so angry. They did something that just finally made me snap." Lillian glanced up at Qrow, only to lower her eyes again in shame.
"Mind you I didn't know much about Semblances let alone how to control it. I didn't know what mine Was, but that's besides the point. I told the kid I hoped he would get hit by a bus. And I really meant it at the time. They laughed it off and went on with their day, and I was grumbling and finding myself able to see it vividly. Of course I was a kid so I was thinking of it like a kid would. Stick figures basically being flattened and getting back up. I..." She swallowed a lump in her throat, her eyes darkening.
"The next morning I went to school, and I saw him riding his bike, he lived pretty close by so his parents didn't mind him riding to school by himself. A school bus was speeding down the road and didn't seem to notice him. The kid jumped out of the way and rolled into a ditch just seconds from getting flattened. His bike was destroyed and my entire class stared in shock as this kid I threatened yesterday almost died...my Semblance did that." She seemed ashamed of her words, biting her lip in silence now. Qrow couldn’t believe what she was saying. She almost killed someone with her semblance? Lillian? The sweetest girl he’s ever met almost caused a child homicide?
“It wasn’t the last time either. Whenever I got angry and thought harmful things it caused them to happen. Teenage bullies falling down the stairs, kids getting bit by wild animals,...” Lillian’s eyes darkened.
“...A Grimm appearing in town and causing havoc to a group of teens….” Tears began to roll down her cheeks as she began to grip her own arm.
“I had to learn to control it. I was so scared every single time I ever caused something like that to happen. It wasn’t like bad luck where it just happens, I could control it...and I hurt people because I couldn’t stop myself from wanting them hurt. I’ve worked on it since I was a kid, but there’s always that fear that I’ll get really mad and can’t control myself. Or that I’ll let my mind wander and I’ll accidentally hurt something I care about…” She looked shamefully towards the floor, Qrow staring at her awestruck. He never thought, even for a moment, that someone like her would even remotely understand what he felt. Without even thinking, he reached up and began running his thumbs across her cheeks, drying the tears from her face. Looking back up to him with tear filled eyes Lillian sniffled softly. She looked so vulnerable. He hated it, seeing her cry and look so helpless. He wanted to see her smile, laugh, make snide remarks whenever she wanted. That confident sweetheart that he had grown to know and care for. Leaning closer, Qrow wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. The two stayed like that, embracing each other in silence for a while. When they finally let each other go, they left the classroom holding each other's hands.
“...Hey, so I’ve thought about it.” Lillian looked towards Qrow confused.
       “Let’s...go to that dumb dance together. If you still want, that is.” His face was red as he spoke, staring ahead and attempting to avoid eye contact with her. Her eyes sparked at his words, a genuine smile forming on her lips.
“I’d love to…” He nodded shyly and walked with her to the cafeteria for lunch.
“How do you think they’ll react?” He chuckled.
“Better be positive, otherwise they’ll have to hear from me~” She giggled, leaning closer to him as they walked.

Chapter 1
“Ah, good evening Miss Violette. Good to see you back.” Bright indigo eyes scanned for the source of who addressed her, only to find a few familiar faces of Beacon. Lillian turned with a friendly smile to her lips.
“Oobleck, Port! Good to see you two. Still torturing the students around here?”
“Oh come now, you know our classes are completely necessary for the survival and intellectual growth of our students. Not to mention-” Lillian listened to Oobleck go onto one of his tangents again, politely listening even though her brain had already checked out at this point. It’s a good thing Oobleck wasn’t her teacher when they were kids.
“I was kidding Oob, come on you know I wouldn’t judge you for your teaching. You both do pretty good work as far as I’ve seen anyway.” Pulling her hood down, she ruffled her hair a bit and sighed.
“I suppose you’ve finished your mission out in Mantle?”
“Oh yeah, yup. All finished with that and ready to be a teacher again. How’s the new students this year?” Truth be told Lillian didn’t wish to speak about her mission, especially since as far as everyone was told it was just some sort of political based mission, nothing too serious. Except it was, and none of them were allowed to know. She continued to speak with the other teachers about the new students, when one of them brought up a familiar name.
“And then there’s our youngest student to ever join the school. Little Miss Rose.”
“Ah yes, Ruby Rose has shown to have remarkable talent and skill for her age. It’s no wonder Ozpin allowed her to enter Beacon so early.”
“Ruby Rose? You’re talking about Yang’s little sister yes? As in Summer and Tai’s Kid?” Lillian found herself quite shocked to know that she had gotten in. When was the last time she even heard that name? Probably last time she saw Yang and Taiyang, which admittedly was a long time ago. Maybe she should go and visit them on one of her free days. While Oobleck and Port continued to praise their students, Lillian gave them a polite wave before heading off to do her own thing. She would have to tell Oz she was back in town, and she’d probably start class back up by tomorrow knowing him. Opening her scroll while walking through the all too familiar courtyard she noticed she hadn’t gotten any messages.
“Hm, that’s odd. He usually replies by now.” She mumbles to herself while walking past the mess hall. A sudden commotion got her attention as she turned towards one of the large windows. Inside showed two teams of students having a food fight, a very intense one she might add. Uh oh, Glynda would not like this. Just to make sure she didn’t get absolutely coated in the flying food she watched from the safety of outside. She hummed in thought, watching the students and trying to see if she recognized any of them. For starters, she recognized the fiery hair of Yang who had whole turkeys over her fists. Another student was using a beam from the room with a watermelon attached, the entire fiasco was actually really fun to watch. She smiled to herself watching the kids just have an absolute war in there. Seeing a speeding ball of red Lillian focused on it, finding the red ball was in fact a little Ruby Rose. She’s grown up since the last time she saw her.
“What on earth is going on in there??” She turned to see Glynda and right behind her Oz, who seemed to be the calmest about the situation.
“Ah welcome back Lillian. Good to see you.”
“You too Oz, and there’s nothing that bad going on. Just some kids having a food fight.”
“And would you care to tell me as to why you didn’t choose to stop them!?”
“I’m not their teacher, at least not yet. Besides they’re just kids, give them a break.” A very loud bang grabbed our attention, and Glynda ran in. Looking up towards the sky I noticed a flash of yellow and hummed to myself. Eyes beginning to shine much brighter than before, I began to mumble under my breath while focusing on the sky.
“She’s going to fall right back into the hole already made in the roof and safely on some soft materials made up of the tables Glynda have already fixed. She will be completely unharmed, and in fact laugh it off with her friends.” With a soft flash of her eyes, they went back to normal as the scene she just described happened the moment Yang’s falling form got close enough.
“I see that still comes in handy.” Oz mentioned with a smile.
“Oh you have no idea. Though admittedly it’s odd having to use it to make sure a student isn’t harmed from their fall at such heights. Usually I just use it to make someone trip or something.” She grinned and offered her hand to Oz who took it and shook it gently.
“It’s good to have you back. Have you by any chance had any contact with Qrow recently?” Her smile faded.
“No, not since the last message he sent out about Her. I’m sure he’s just busy, we’ll surely hear from him soon.” She reassured, gaining a nod before watching the kids inside get scolded by Glynda. Ozpin went inside first to cool Glynda off, and Lillian went inside after.
“Well, that was quite the show. I noticed you all used different foods based off certain weapons along with using your semblances when only necessary. Impressive.” They all stared at this stranger for a minute of silence, only for Yang to suddenly brighten up.
“Holy cow, Miss Lily is that you?”
“The one and only firecracker~” Yang stood and ran over to her, offering a fist bump to which Lillian reciprocated. Doing a small handshake between the two ending with a childish little explosion, everyone still looked quite confused.
“Yang, do you know her?”
“Oh yeah that’s right. You haven’t really seen her all that much since you were little, huh? Ruby this is Miss Lily. She’s a friend of our dad and uncle Qrow. Plus, she’s actually a teacher at the school.” Ruby’s eyes sparkled as she somewhat zoomed over.
“You know Dad and uncle Qrow?”
“Sure do, have since we were all in school together.” Lillian couldn’t help but smile watching who was once this tiny spawn of Summer turn into a beautiful young lady of Beacon. She looked so much like her mom it was insane.
“It’s so nice to see you again Ruby, I haven’t seen you since you were this tall.” She gestured towards her knees, and Ruby giggled.
“What seriously??? That was forever ago, how come you haven’t come to visit?”
“Well, being a huntress is pretty serious business. We get super busy with missions and helping those who need it, sometimes you have to sacrifice some personal time. Though…” Looking down at Ruby, Lillian smiled and ruffled her hair.
“Maybe now that I’m back, maybe I should take some time to revisit old friends. I don’t know…”
“While that sounds like a fantastic idea, perhaps you should report on your last mission first, Miss Violette?” Glynda reminded Lillian who pouted.
“Yup, that too. And with that, I’m off. It was nice seeing you again Yang, Ruby. I’ll see the rest of you in class tomorrow~!”
“See ya~”
“Bye~!” Following behind Glynda and Oz, Lillian opened up her scroll again with a sigh.
“Still nothing back from him it seems?” Oz asked, slowing down to Lillian’s pace.
“Yeah, but I’m confident that he’s okay. I just have to keep reminding myself of that.”
“Yes, well...we wouldn’t want anything to come out of you panicking now would we?” Lillian rubbed her arm a bit.
“It only works if I can see exactly how it could happen. It’s why I don’t ask for the full details of Qrow’s missions. If I were to be the reason he got hurt..” Oz set his hand on her shoulder.
“Not to worry, it’s as you said. You’re confident he is okay. He’ll get back to us when he can…” Walking back to Oz’s office, Lillian took the time to admire the Academy of Beacon with each passing step. She hasn’t been here since the first week of the first semester. Thinking back, she remembered in the beginning of the school semester Oz and Glynda talking about a special case student brought in two years early. She never imagined they had been talking about Ruby. She really has taken after her mother. Plus the fact Qrow had been a teacher at Signal does make complete sense. Once the doors had closed to Oz’s office Lillian watched as he sat down, sipping his coffee.
“Alright, now you were sent to find a bit of information and maybe have a bit of a…” Oz gestured a bit while holding his coffee.
“Premonition..?” Lillian nodded and pulled out her scroll, setting it on the table and a bright screen shining a hologram.
“Okay, so a few weeks ago we got a message from Qrow stating and I quote ‘Queen has Pawns’ I can in fact confirm this, as I was able to gain a bit of information on the ones currently taking place here.” Glynda looked to Oz and then to Lillian.
“Here? They’re already taking action?”
“Yes, it seems she has taken into consideration our dependence on peace. She’s gotten a few recruits here, one of them as we’ve already figured was Torchwick and his goons. But it seems we have a much more...interesting case.” She changed the screen from the text message to a screenshot of the video taken of the attempted robbery months ago. She pointed to the silhouetted figure that attacked with fire.
“We couldn’t identify the one in this shot, and from what we’ve noticed in our criminal files she doesn’t describe anyone we know at all. However from what I’ve noticed, she doesn’t seem to be a lacky of Torchwick. If anything she seems to be protecting the goods more than him. I believe this young lady is actually one of Salem’s closer pawns sent here to keep her recruits in check. Also, just by body type alone it seems this definitely isn’t an adult. This is a younger lady, probably aged closer to our own students.” Glynda crossed her arms and looked at the information.
“While this is helpful. What exactly are you attempting to imply?”
“That this young lady is probably not their only younger pawn. If they have younger ones here, they can take full advantage of our festival coming up and possibly pretend to be students from other schools. I’m not saying we stop the festival, however I am saying that we need to be at least on guard.”
“And I agree.” Lillian stopped and looked to the door, seeing Ironwood now standing at the door. He looked at Lillian with a gentle smile.
“Lillian, good to see you.”
“James, didn’t hear you come in. Still playing with those toy soldiers I see.”
“Haha, very funny.” Ironwood went to greet Oz and Glynda, and Glynda immediately took the time to leave.
“Well she certainly hasn’t changed.”
“Well she is Glynda. She hasn’t gotten where she is for changing herself. And with that, I’ll see myself out. Good seeing you James.”
“Lillian wait, you can stay if you’d like.” James offered, gesturing towards her scroll still on the table.
“You don’t have to stop on my count. Please continue.” Lillian looked to Ozpin who nodded silently.
“Go on Lillian.” She sighed softly and walked over to Oz. She pointed at her temple for a second, before looking at her scroll.
“I had...a moment while finding information, and I saw a silhouetted pair behind our younger pawn. She seemed to have two others around the same age and all I really saw were silhouettes. One had bright glowing red eyes, another green hair, and the other silver. It seemed two women and a man all of student age, and that’s all I saw. As far as Qrow and his current whereabouts I have no information at all.” Taking her scroll, she looked between the two and nodded.
“I did just get back, so I’m gonna go unpack, rest a little and maybe get prepared for my class tomorrow.”
“Oh that’s right. Yes you brought up a good point. You start teaching again tomorrow, so go and take this time to rest. Thank you.” Lillian left the room and looked to Glynda who leaned against the wall.
“It’ll be quite troublesome if we can’t find those spies. However I feel that your words might have convinced James to bring more firepower.”
“Convince him or not, Oz can tell him not to. I don’t think making a show of our abilities is wise. This is why I teach the students the way I do. A semblance is powerful, but you shouldn’t become dependent on it. Your weapons and your wit should be your first instinct in a fight. A semblance while it should be honed and able to be controlled, it shouldn’t be used unless completely necessary. Its the same thing with James’ army. If he shows everyone his biggest weapons as a show of power, all that does is give the enemy information. I agree we should be careful, but that does not mean we should scare everyone with large ships and constant robo-guards on duty. Now, I have class tomorrow, and I have had a long journey. I’m going to go rest. Have a good night Glynda.”
After the excitement had finally died down Lillian took the chance to plop onto her bed and let out a large sigh. Unbuttoning her hood she slipped it off, her long sleeves following it as her arms now reveal several scars across her skin. She then unbuckled her weapons from her wrists and set them on her bed to examine her new scars and bandaged injuries. The last battle she had been part of was a bit problematic, especially on her own.
“Shit, well could be worse.” She sits on the floor of her room, medical boxes now open and sprawled out around her while she does her best to deal with the wounds now with proper medical materials. While doing so, there a small chime coming from the scroll on her bed. She perks up, glancing over her bed and seeing the familiar profile on her screen. As if her wounds were healed just by the chime, a big smile formed on her face. She dropped the materials and climbed onto her bed, checking the text with full attention.
“Hey Lily~ How’s my Vixen? Sorry about the late reply, I just got a chance to check. I’m okay, a little scraped up, but alright. Have you gotten back?” A big smile continues to shine across her features as she begins to quickly text back.
“Hey! I have, are you in a safe spot? The others are worried about you, we haven’t heard from you since that last message. I’m glad you’re okay, I knew you would be, but it doesn’t stop my worrying.” Her heart was pounding with both joy and worry over him. At least he wasn’t hurt, or you know...not hurt a lot. Another chime rung through and her heart continued to pound.
“Yeah, I’ve found a good place to rest up. As far as I know I wasn’t followed and can talk. Why? Did you miss me that much Vixy? ;) ” Lillian felt her face heat up and slowly typed in his number. Calling him, she rested her head atop her pillow and stared at the ceiling. A few rings chimed through and eventually a click and silence. Then she heard his voice, and her purple eyes sparkled.
“Guess that’s a yes~ Hey Vixy~” Lillian let out a happy shaky sigh and gripped her scroll tightly.
“Hey~ It’s so good to hear your voice. I felt like I haven’t heard it in forever.”
“Yeah, honestly it’s a little weird hearing your voice too. I can’t believe it’s been this long. But hey, how was your mission? We were stopped pretty abruptly that last call.” Lillian absentmindedly looked to her now bandaged arms.
“I’m okay, got a bit scraped up myself, but it could’ve been worse. You didn’t tell me Ruby was in Beacon now. The teachers are praising her for her skills. Looks like you taught her well.” The two continued to chat for at least an hour, relaxing from both of their exciting days and joking around about old and new circumstances. It seems just talking with each other has lightened an unspoken heavy atmosphere around the two. The sun has dropped, and the two continued to speak until a single yawn from Lillian stopped the conversation.
“Getting tired?”
“Yeah, how about you?”
“Ah, I’m alright. You should sleep though, don’t worry. This dusty old crow knows how to take care of himself.”
“Yeah? Well this sleepy Fox knows how stubborn the dusty crow is. You should rest and at least let your aura heal up. Come on like old times, let’s go to bed together.” She heard a chuckle from Qrow over the scroll.
“Really now? You know next time I see you I’m going to hold you up to that~” Lillian giggled and hugged her pillow close.
“...Hey Qrow? When do you think you’ll be getting home?” There was a silence, before a sigh.
“I’m not sure, not too long I guess. Why? Wish I was there to share a bed with you~?”
“Come on Qrow be serious, also yes. I really miss you.” Her voice was soft, and she couldn’t help but feel vulnerable.
“Okay okay, I’m sure I’ll be home soon. And I promise when I get home you can keep me there for at least a day.”
“Two Days~”
“You drive a hard bargain, but you’re cute so I’ll say sure.”
“Deal~” Lillian smiled and yawned again.
“You better rest tonight Qrow, no take backsies.”
“What are you, twelve?”
“Fight me~ Goodnight.” She hears a chuckle once again.
“Goodnight Lily~” Once the call ended, Lillian turned on her side and let out a soft sigh. Relief overcame her as she finally got to hear from Qrow. Now knowing for a fact he was alright, she let sleep take over and she finally found a good comfortable rest throughout the night.

Chapter 2
 “Welcome students! I understand that this may be a bit out of the blue for some of you, but my name is Professor Violette. Some of you know me as Miss Lily, and I will be your teacher for hopefully the rest of the year. I had taken a short break to deal with personal matters, but I have returned and am completely eager to teach all of you.” Lillian stood in front of her class with a soft smile, eyes scanning the room and meeting both new and familiar faces.
“Now, in this class we are going to try something a little different. While yes this is a combat based class, it is a bit more...challenging if I must admit.” She started, walking across her lower floor to the large classroom that slowly went up with each level of step towards the student’s seats.
“We have a few rules here, you know the simple ones. Behave, Do Not doze off in my class, and if I seem to catch a moment of disinterest in my class where one of you seems bored or chooses not to pay attention, I have every right to call you to the front of the class and possibly embarrass you. It’s not certain, but it is always an option.” As she spoke she kept a calm look both in her mannerisms and the way she spoke. She finally stopped pacing, her belted black boots turning as she now faced the class directly.
“In my classroom, I am going to teach you how to protect yourself in any possible scenario. You’re going to learn to become more dependent on yourself and willing to learn from your teammates. Now that seems much like your other combat class, so why don’t we kick it up a notch?” Lifting her hand, Lillian took the chance to unbuckle the belts holding her weapons to her hands, loosening the gloves on her hands and slipping them off before placing the greyish purple gloves onto the desk.
“In my class our number one rule is No Weapons, and No using your Semblance.” The entire classroom reacted in mixed whispers and shocked expressions between everyone. Some seemed excited, others seemed incredibly confused and scared.
“You heard right, I’m going to teach you combat without any weapons or use of your semblance. I understand that may scare some of you, but all of you wish to be huntsmen and huntresses don’t you? Out there, passed these cushioned walls anything can happen. Some of you already know a little bit about that.” Lillian’s eyes locked on Team RWBY and Team JNPR for a moment before going back to scanning the rest of her class.
“In a life or death situation it’s not impossible for your aura to be broken and any next attack will do much more damage, if not kill you. Most would retreat as that would be the wisest option at that point. However, let’s say there’s an innocent that you have the possibility of saving. I can count at least on both my hands and feet some huntsmen and huntresses that would take that chance and risk their lives to save that innocent. It’s what the job is about, saving innocent lives that can’t save themselves. Keeping peace and protecting the balance of the world. Sometimes your lives are lost because of it, but all of you already knew that. Everyday we lose people that swore to protect us, protect our way of life. Today I see a classroom of the next generation fighting to become the next protectors of that way of life. And I want all of you to be ready when that day comes.” The room had grown silent as each student listened to this Huntress’s confident words about all of them. With a soft exhale, Lillian straightened herself and gave a big friendly smile.
“While this class is mostly combat based, I also will help with any of you that are in need of semblance training. Whether that be to learn how to shut it off, control it, or even activate it. While I am here to teach you not to be completely dependent on your semblance, I am also your teacher. A semblance is a wonderful thing that we all have, some more powerful than others. It should be considered your wild card, when backed against a wall you unleash this concentrated blast of power your enemy didn’t know you had. It makes it much more difficult for the enemy to get an advantage on you when you refuse to show them everything you have. Now..” She clapped her hands together, rubbing them a bit with an excited grin.
“Who would like to go first?” One of the male students rose to his feet, confidently coming down and introducing himself to the teacher. Lillian nodded, and instructed him to stand at the opposite side of the class in a sparring stance. Once she said begin, the student ran full speed to her and it didn’t take much for her to dodge his swings at her. Lillian slid and ducked smoothly as this young man swiftly swung his limbs in her direction missing most points but catching a few when she’d go to test his strength on an arm block or a wrist grab. This student, now starting to have to catch his breath, seemed more frustrated now and swung much more arbitrary motions in her direction. Finally, he turned his entire body to get one good angry punch in, only for Lillian’s eyes to glow brighter.
“Slip.” And with that simple one word phrase, the child lost his footing from the swing of his body and slipped. Lillian caught his wrist on the way down, his head dangling just a half foot from the ground.
“There, just then you used your Semblance.” The class whispered among each other as Lillian let the student go.
“Your Semblance is a more physical attribute yes? You use it to hone specific parts of your body’s strength so you can hit harder or run faster. When it comes to specifically focusing it on one part of your body it gives off this maximized feeling to your aura. I could feel it in your fist the moment you activated it. This is what I mean. If your go-to attack when frustrated is your Semblance, you’ll give yourself away much too quickly. I want you to learn to spar skillfully before even thinking about using your Semblance. I suggest asking a few buddies of yours to spar with you, and pay more attention in Glynda’s class. Thank you, that’s all for your turn.” The defeated student went back to his seat, much more hands showing in the air now. Student after student Lillian took to the center of the room and chose to fight herself. Of course most of the students didn’t get to, but Lillian promised to get to everyone in the next few days. With a huff, the student Jaune Arc fell to the ground. Lillian smiled and hummed a bit while thinking.
“Impressive, you didn’t use your semblance once. Not to mention you have potential in learning hand to hand combat. You’ll need work, but not to worry this is your first day of my class and you will have lots more time to train and practice. Though I did notice your aura is a bit on the weaker side. If you’d like I can have a student with exceptional aura and semblance practice help in studying. Of course whenever any of you need me I am right here so any questions you may have I’ll answer as best as I can.” She helped the boy up and watched as he went back to his seat with a bit of an uncomfortable adjust of his walk. Most of the students would be sore after her class. When she sparred she mostly blocked, but did take opportunities to swing at and flip students with higher skill levels in combat. Once the bell rang, Lillian smiled and clapped softly.
“Alright, that’s all for today, Thank you all so much for your volunteering today, and remember there’s much more of today coming your way. Remember that the dance is this weekend; make sure to have fun, but not too much fun as lots of you are going on your first missions on Monday. I’ll see you all there as a Chaperone.” Students began leaving the room off to their next classes, and without much warning a blast of red appeared next to Lillian.
“Miss Lily that was awesome!” Lillian looked to Ruby and almost by instinct ruffled her hair.
“Why thank you~ How did you like the class?”
“Honestly? A little barbaric.” Weiss Schnee cut into the conversation, rubbing her shoulder a bit sorely. Giving the girl a sympathetic look, Lillian patted her on her good shoulder.
“A little bit of bruising just means it’s working. Though I’ll admit I didn’t expect to have to hit so hard. You’ve got skills Weiss. Just try not to become so dependent on your toys. Wouldn’t want to panic when you’re out of a sword.” Ruby chuckled a bit at Weiss’s expense, to which the two left behind a tired Blake. Knowing what they’ve been off doing recently, Lillian left her alone for this class.
“So, you aren’t going to tell Ozpin what happened?” Yang asked, gaining Lillian’s attention.
“Oh I am, but I figured letting you four get a bit of recon done wouldn’t be the worst thing. Especially since you seem to always get in trouble anyway~” Ruffling her hair Yang grinned and pushed her hand away. A little bit ago Lillian had gone to speak with Yang and Ruby, catch up a bit for lost time, when she found herself at their door planning a recon mission outside of school. It was when Ruby started to drag Weiss out that they were found out and had to explain to the teacher literally everything. Instead of telling Ozpin on them immediately, she decided to trust these kids as long as they promised to be safe. Only for them to end up fighting giant robots from what she could guess is some stolen tech from Ironwood’s department. It was seemingly always something with these kids, especially from what she read from their files.
“Well, the gang and I are gonna try to get Blake to go to the dance. She needs a breather.”
“Good luck with that, she does need it. But I’m not quite sure she’ll accept it at this point.”
“Are you bringing anyone to the dance?” Lillian’s eyes seem to darken for a second, before she pushed it away with a smile
“No no, I’m just a chaperone. Maybe I’ll see you all at the dance. Just don’t make me have you escort you out or something. I hate being the responsible one.” Yang and Lillian did their handshake before the fiery blonde left. With a sigh, Lillian leaned onto her desk and began to pick up her gloves. That was when her scroll went off. She picked it up quickly, throwing it between each hand in a messy attempt to catch it, only to hold it close to her chest and steady it. Peeking at the message, she smiled seeing it was Qrow. It’s been a while since he’s responded again. It was a very common thing for Qrow to answer messages for a day or two, and then go off the radar for several weeks, to even months. While it was a bit tiresome, Lillian knew it was all part of the job.
“Hey <3 You said today was your first day back as a teacher right? How did that go?” Lillian looked around, before closing her scroll and pocketing it. With a quick scurry around the class she made sure everything was clean and proper before grabbing her own things and locking the door on her way out of the classroom. She didn’t take long to head back to her room, closing the door and plopping onto her bed. She then took the scroll out and reread the message.
“Really well! I think the kids like me, and Ruby is starting to warm up to me like when she was a toddler. These kids get in more trouble than we ever did though. >.<” While waiting on Qrow’s next message, Lillian stared out the window of her room, watching the sky above her. Yang’s words stuck with her about the dance. It’s definitely not by choice she goes to the dance alone, if she could she’d go with Qrow, but she knows that’s almost impossible. Another buzz of her scroll grabbed her attention.
“That’s great, yeah those two have been pretty much always into something since they were born. They’re brats, but good kids. So, now that class is over, what do you plan to do tonight? Maybe keep me company~? ;)” Lillian’s face heated up as she mumbled incoherent mumbles and squeaks. She should be used to this, but every day it seems almost brand new. She took a few minutes to think of her next words, before finally biting her lip and taking a chance.
“Maybe~ But umm, I was wondering. Do you remember the dances they have at Beacon? Like when we were young? They’re having one this weekend and I’m chaperoning. I know you can’t make it, but would you want to talk during it? It could be like...you know, old times.” Her finger was actually shaking by the time she sent that message. Did that sound dumb? Was she acting like a desperate teen wanting attention? Maybe she should just say never mind, it’s obvious he’s incredibly busy. Plus Ozpin doesn’t even know that they’ve been in contact since the last meeting. Small little thoughts continued to plague her mind waiting in almost agony for his next message, and then a buzz.
“Oh yeah? Wow I haven’t thought about that in a while. It’s almost weird to; us going to the dance. That was so long ago. Heh, yeah if I’m not hiding from the enemy I’ll send you a text. Or you know, too drunk to move. When is that thing again?”
“Sunday, pretty sure it starts around 7 or 8. I’ll admit it’ll be the first time I’ve worn a dress since I was a student here.”
“Whoa whoa you’re getting all dressed up too? I thought you swore against heels for the rest of your life?”
“I can wear a dress and not heels Qrow~ Besides, it’s been years since I’ve gotten to look pretty. Thought I might give it a shot.” There was a long pause on Qrow’s end, and while Lillian waited for Qrow to answer she pulled out said dress to give it a look over. A dark rich purple color matching her eyes with long sleeves made of lace and a skirt long enough to meet her knees, but short enough for when she full spins it would lift into a beautiful flower blooming shape. Touching the soft fabric she let out a sigh. She’ll have to keep this dress for later. Maybe Qrow can see it one day. Finally a reply.
“I mean, you always look pretty so that’s a lie.” This smooth motherfucker.
“Oh hush <3 I promise to keep the dress for later. I think it looks nice, it would be a shame if you didn’t get to see it one day.”
“I’m holding you to that~ Seriously though, I know I’ve been gone for a while. How are you doing?”
“I’m alright, I miss you. Things have gotten a little crazy here. Ironwood is here with his robot army, trying to convince Oz to basically go into war mode. Your nieces and their team have been investigating Crime Networks without permission while fighting giant mechs and basically a Faunus mob? (Apparently the White Fang is involved in this along with those Pawns we’re looking into.) And this has all been since around the time of me showing back up to Beacon. So yeah, typical week.”
“Ironwood is there??? Jeez, I feel sorry for you~”
“Ha ha very funny. Oh, and there’s two students that I’ve asked Glynda to keep an eye on. Really three, but only two of them ever go to class. I think...they might be those younger pawns we were talking about. I can’t say for sure and I don’t want to cause a scene if they are innocent, but I have a bad feeling. They look as if I had finally put detail to the silhouettes of my premonition! What if the enemy is right here and we don’t know? I just don’t want these kids to be involved so early, they have so much more life to live.”
“Well, I can’t say you’re right or not, but I can say to be careful. Definitely watch the kids while I’m away, and if things get real bad get the hell out of there. Have you told Oz about this?” Lillian bit her lip, glancing to the side trying her best to figure out a response.
“I’ve told him about my vision, and he’s surely noticed my reaction to the student files, but I haven’t made it too big of a deal yet. The festival will be here before we know it, and we have a dance Sunday Night. Not to mention he’s already busy with James here. I just...don’t want to cause an unnecessary scene.”
“Always thinking of others Vixy~ Well, I can’t tell you what to do. Just be careful.”
“I will. So, what are Your plans for tonight~?”
“Ooh nothing much. Hiding, drinking, maybe flirting with an adorable Vixen? ;) ”
“Well, I don’t see why not~ Want to video chat?” It only took about a minute before her scroll began to ring, a soft giggle escaping her lips as she answered. The screen flashed, loaded for a few seconds, and then Lillian made eye contact with Qrow. Her bright violet eyes shined as they saw the familiar red orbs. His hair was a bit of a mess, and dark circles under his eyes. He looked exhausted, but even in that state Lillian had to admit her heart was thumping out of her chest. He still held her heart quite tightly. He smiled slowly, a genuinely soft look in his tired eyes as he saw her.
“Hey~”
“Hi~ You look so tired.”
“Gee, thanks~” Lillian giggled, holding the scroll with sparkling eyes. She knew she had missed him, but now having him right in front of her on the screen, seeing him, she couldn’t help but get incredibly emotional. She grinned and subconsciously brushed her hair from her face.
“I missed you…”
“I missed you too Lily, wow...you look great.” Her cheeks reddened as she started to hide her face. The two took the time to just look at each other, realizing between the two that they haven’t really seen each other in months. Despite the fact they would talk sometimes, it didn’t hold a candle to them finally seeing one another.
“So, do I get to see this dress?”
“Hmmm, nope~”
“Aww come on~ Don’t leave me hanging~” Lillian rolled her eyes and stuck out her tongue.
“Oh you’ll pay for that~” Lillian and Qrow took the time to talk and joke around, as if they were students back in Beacon enjoying each other’s company between classes. Qrow took a swig from his flask, only a swig Lillian noticed.
“So what are you drinking tonight?”
“Brandy, not going to yell at me to stop drinking?” Lillian shrugs.
“I don’t mind a drink every once in a while. I just don’t like you to get shitfaced. I’m not going to control you Qrow.” Qrow’s softened eyes stared at Lillian for a moment, before staring down at his flask. Staring at it, he opened it and took another swig before closing it and setting it somewhere off screen.
“You’re way too patient with me. I wouldn’t judge if you just...you know, yelled at me for being a drunk.” Looking into his eyes, Lillian bit her lip thinking for a moment.
“Qrow...You have been drinking for a long time and you’re your own person. Plus, you’ve been through some tough shit, I get it. I’m not going to judge you for drinking every once in a while. All I can say is that life has good in it. If you’re drunk all the time you won’t remember all the good times. I would love to spend time with a Sober Qrow more often, but that is your choice to make. Just know that I will always be by your side. Okay?” With a little hum, Qrow nodded slightly staring down.
“Yeah, okay…”
“...Do you still want to see the dress?” He let out a chuckle and leaned on his hand, looking into her eyes once again.
“Are you actually going to show it to me~?”
“Maaaaybe~”
“You’re really gonna tease me with this dress~ Fine, I’ll bite. Can I please see this dress?” Lillian grinned coyly and hummed, teasing him by not moving from her spot.
“...Okay~” She got up and walked out of view, coming back a minute or so later holding the dress up to the scroll.
“Ta-da~! Doesn’t it look great?” She pretended to wear it, twirling in place and smiling like a child. Qrow gave such a soft look that he hasn’t made in such a long time, he couldn’t take his eyes off of her.
“It looks great, you’re going to look beautiful on the dance floor.” Setting the dress down, Lillian leaned onto the bed once again smiling,
“I’ll save you a dance~” She winked playfully, and Qrow rolled his eyes. Hearing a knock on the door, Lillian turned towards the door and froze in place.
“Who is it?”
“Miss Lily? It’s us, Ruby and Yang.” Lillian relaxed and smiled, turning towards the scroll and smiling softly.
“I have to go, I’ll call you later okay?”
“You better, talk to you soon Lily~” After the call ended, Lillian went to the door and answered to find Yang and Ruby in front of her. She smiled as Yang and her fist bumped and Ruby waved happily.
“Hey girls, is there something you need?”
“Nope, just wanted to come and say hi.”
“Aw that’s sweet. Why do I not believe you?” Yang and Ruby looked at each other with a big grin.
“Wellllll.”
“We were also kind of hoping that you could tell us something?” Lillian crossed her arms with a slight raise to her eyebrow.
“And what is that?”
“How exactly did you meet our dad?” Lillian blinked for a moment, looking between them before tilting her head.
“Well where did that come from?”
“You said you’ve known our dad and uncle Qrow since you all were in school together. We’ve been thinking about it for a while.”
“That and you seemed kinda bummed when you said you were going to the dance alone. So, we thought we’d come talk to you.” Lillian smiled softly and crossed her arms softly.
“Well, you don’t have to worry about the dance thing. I would love to have a date to the dance, but he is currently on a mission. But it’s alright, if you wish to know how I met Taiyang and Qrow then I’ll gladly tell you.” She pulled a chair out and sat down, noticing a look from both of them.
“Wait, do you have a boyfriend~?” Yang said with an accusatory smile. Ruby happily gasped and got closer, eyes sparkling.
“Is it a long distance relationship? Is it forbidden? How long have you known him? Is he absolutely perfect?” Lillian ruffled her hair and grinned.
“Well, you two are certainly nosy~ If you must know then I’ve been with him since we both were in Beacon. I’ve loved him for a long time. Qrow’s been my other half for years now-”
“Whoa whoa whoa!” Yang cut her off, the two very obviously surprised.
“You.. and Uncle Qrow?”
“Uncle Qrow has a girlfriend!?” Lillian’s cheeks turned bright red. Was she not supposed to tell them that? She figured it was obvious, but then again Qrow wasn’t around the kids that often, and neither was she, so when they were together it was rare they were together around the kids.
“Yes, Qrow and I have been together for….a very long time. I forgot that you two never really saw us together when you were younger. But yeah, I’m guessing you really wanna hear that story now.” The two girls sat down in front of Lillian, now looking like small children ready for story time. Lillian gave them a soft smile before slightly shaking her head.
“Alright, don’t twist my arm~” She readjusted herself for a moment, leaning back comfortably and preparing to sit for a while.
“Now I’m warning you, this is a long story. No bathroom breaks, no snacks, so be ready to sit for a while.” The two nodded intently, before Lillian smiled and took a deep breath.
“Well, it all started the first few days of the school year. It was my first year of Beacon Academy.”
