You came back home after a long day at work, the only thing in mind is wanting to snuggle up with your husband with a glass of wine.

"Welcome home, honey!" he greeted you at the door, placing a gentle kiss on your cheek.

You both sat down on the couch with Chuuya sitting at one end and you lying across with your feet prepped up on his lap. He scrolled through the tv, landing on whatever trashy show you both enjoyed watching.

As you both got engrossed on the show, he softly caressed the tops of your feet absentmindedly, but once he noticed you relaxing to the touch, he decided to take it up a notch and started massaging your feet with more pressure.

"Ahh... that feels good" you said with a satisfied sigh, practically melting into the couch.

"You deserve it, you work too hard" he shot you a soft smile as he kept rubbing.

You swore you could fall asleep right there and then. You felt your eyes growing heaving until his thumb glided down the sole of your foot and you couldn't help but jump at the touch.

"Oh?~".

You knew that tone too well, you didn't even have to look up to know he was wearing that stupid, teasy grin that always managed to fluster the heck out of you "Did that... tickle a bit?~".

"Y-you already know the answer to that!" You spat out in-between stutters, but didn't bother to pull your feet away. It was clear how much joy tickling brought to you and Chuuya found that so endearing, but that didn't stop him from being a 'lil shit, it is Chuuya after all.

"Hmm, do I? I can't seem to remember. Guess I'll just have to see for myself~" he playfully dug his fingers into your arches, causing you to squeal in delight and throw your head back in laughter.

"Chuuya you ahahass!" you clutched your stomach as laughter erupted from your throat, lightly squirming from side to side, but still having fun nonetheless. Not like you'd admit it out loud...

"Insult me all you want but I won't stop~" he grinned cheekily as he tickled all the way from your heels up to your toes.

"Y-you... chibi-chan!!" you said through your giggles. You knew exactly how to provoke him, and it worked.

"Oh that does it!" suddenly he jumped on top of you, making you screech in surprise. Then, he playfully spidered his fingers up and down your sides and all around your belly.

"PFFT! AHAHAHAHAHA!" your laughter grew tenfold as your face practically turned into a tomato. All while squirming like a worm under Chuuya's grasp.

"Call me that again, I dare you" he pretended to be pissed but his goofy grin betrayed any sense of anger.

"EHEHEHE! C-CHIBI CHAN!!!" you said through hysterics, already feeling giddy of what he'd do next.

"Ohoho you asked for it~" he shot you a smug grin as he pulled your shirt up. You already knew where this was going when you saw him leaning his face towards the bare spot.

"W-wait Chuuya not thaHAHAT!!!" an ear-shattering squeal escaped your mouth as Chuuya blew the biggest raspberry he could muster right over your bellybutton.

"Yehehes that!" the ginger teased as he now blew small raspberries scattered all over your belly, making you giggle and squeak like a doofus in love.

After a while longer he eventually let up and before he knew it, you had passed out asleep on the couch. Still wearing an angelic smile on your face. Chuuya looked at you with an endearing grin and placed a gentle kiss on your forehead as he cuddled up next to you, both sleeping contently for the rest of the night.

Sans: Nice and slow. He's got plenty of time, and compared to his brash and idiotic brothers, he's definitely more approachable. He'll be funny, goofy, and sensitive. A man written by a woman, if you will. Of course, it's definitely not how he usually acts, but hey. You don't need to worry your sweet lil' head.

Papyrus: Sympathetically. This really was never supposed to happen. Poor you who was just minding their buissness, and now you are in the middle of a feud. He'll treat you very well in hopes of making things up to you! He won't exactly be overly friendly, but definitely apologetic.

Blue: Nervously and cautiously. Blue isn't much of a romance guy. He's confident in everything else but wooing someone? He gotta do a lil research. He'll have a "Dating 101" book in his back pocket and try his best to reference it. But overall, he's kind to you! Well, as kind as a mobster can get?

Stretch: Annoyed. Was this seriously happening? Stretch was beyond irritated that this was actually going on. He's definitely not going to be crued to you, but he's not gonna be the nicest skeleton you have ever met. He's mostly going to stay out of sight and ignore you if he has to...

Red: Interested. Oh yeah... This is Red's specialty. Is what he tells himself. This man will either make you feel really bashful or really uncomfortable, depending on how you react to flirting. Everything you do, say, and act will be complimented to high hell. And don't forget the avalanche of pet names!

Edge: Schepticly. Edge isn't too excited about this development. Of course, it's much better than senseless fighting. (Honestly, he wouldn't mind it as much.) He'll be civil and a little bashful when talking. But of course, you won't really know that cause he's YELLIN out of nervousness.

Soot usually finds most DJ's over the top. They usually carry an air about them that remind him too much of Fresh for him to be comfortable, but somehow you're different. He didn't know why he began to turn up to your gigs. The fact that you don't know him amuses the ever-living-SOUL out of him because holy fuck you've got to be living under a rock. He finds your fierce loyalty entrancing and actually kind of adorable. He will also actively Fuck Anyone Up if they manage to piss you off- not usually in front of you, but it has happened sometimes.

Hit, the charming, possessive bastard he is, definitely flirts with you in the most un-weird way ever. As if it's something natural. He finds your willingness to be in front of crowds and the ability to manipulate music the way you do pretty awesome. He's surprised you haven't heard a lot about him- he's pretty infamous- but that just means to him that you're seeing him as a blank slate. ... it's weirdly refreshing for him, to be seen without being judged for his sins.

... You'll never hear him say that he's intimidated by you when you're angry.

Colt is intrigued by you. He's kind of tone deaf- don't ask him to dance, he's got two left feet- but he can appreciate the level of dedication and skill that goes into it. Not only does he find you pretty, but your fun personality is awesome for him to be around. He doesn't get a lot of silly goofy interactions due to his line of work, so you're a big breath of fresh air. He almost expects falling in love with you, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hit him any less hard. He enjoys being around you, often doing lil' romantic acts.

Whenever you get Super Pissed he will start sweating and likely advert his gaze- even if you're mildly annoyed at him.

● Humanborns are inherently shifters.

● Other shifters can either have humanborn parents or it just runs in the family.

● There is a ocean Aria! It's deeper than any normal merfolk can go but sirens have a higher pressure tolerance (like blobfish) so thats why they can live down there.

○ They use magic and wards to mask it, as well as most sirens just using a rift to get to the surface.

○ Imagine humans finally having the ability to explore the Mariana trench and are met with magic that makes em forget it.

● Empathy sirens don't come up to the surface a lot but when they do they usually cloak themselves.

● Different sirens sing different songs that inflict different emotions on humans.

○ They do shift into a human form (Gavin doesn't cause his whole "I'm not shifting for others" thing ofc)

● Idk much abt Aria (I tuned out during Gav's ramblings) but the Chorus for this world's Aria is made up of siren royalty.

● Hux is not a shifter, Damien, Lasko, and FL are shifters, Gavin and Caelum are Sirens.

○ Hux is a whale shark merfolk. Damien is some kinda wierd serpenty water snek shifter. Lasko is a goofy lil' Jellyfish shifter.

○ Lasko shocks people when he gets nervous (on accident ofc)

● All of the Shaw pack are dogfish shark shifters.

○ The unempowered mates aren't buuut SH is an octopus shifter bc camoflage!!!

● Freelancers in this world can turn into any kind of merfolk they want. It would take a big tole on them, though.

○ Freelancers cannot shift into any merfolk with extra special powers. So no sirens, squids, or whales.

●Whale merfolk can get bigger and smaller depending on what they need.

● Unless previously empowered, vampires are now squid shifters.

○ They are the only ones that have the power to turn anyone into a squid shifter. (It does bring em back once they die.)

● Lovely is an eel shifter ofc (once they get turned they can shift into a vampire squid too)

● Sam can shift into anything ofc, but once he gets turned theres a new one added to that pile. It takes even more of a tole on him to shift too much in one day now though.

● Clans and packs are wierd now

○ Theres also schools... So schools of merfolk are just normal ranking citizen groups. Typically they don't have humaborns, but are fine with normal shifters.

○ Packs are above that, and are made up of any species of shark. Sharks can go off on their own, but are expected to join/make a pack at one point in their life.

○ Clans are the highest ranking, and consist of any kinds of merfolk as long as they are squid shifters. It is fairly uncommon for squid shifters to not be apart of a clan. Infact, its required by the department for every squid shifter to be associated with a clan.

● The inversion was easy to cover up since it happened underwater.

● Siren's songs have varying effects depending on what you are.

○ Full effect on humans

○ Half effect on shifters

○ Zero effect on merfolk

● The Gavin and Vega fight was done underwater while FL brought Caelum to safety on land.

○ Vega is 100% more used to being on land than Gavin so it wasn't really safety but uh- whatever-

● FL prefers to be with their friends because they still live with their parents. Thing is, they hate swimming in the ocean.

○ To try and fix that, Hux started helping them learn to swim in the little cave that they met Gav in.

○ Took almost half a year for FL to finally gain the confidence to go out into the ocean. They loved and hated it at the same time. But they still wouldn't go any deeper than the reef.

● Lasko and FL taught Damien how to shift and showed him around the land.

● Gavin finally got to spend some actual time with FL when they started going down further to ocean dahlia.

○ Lets just say things got spicy...

● The new wierd abandoned carnival place is a beach that is closed of for safety.

● Sam lives underwater bit away from underwater dahlia.

● Tank moved into underwater dahlia when they came back from Washington.

● Asher and David live on land.

● Milo lives on land but moves into underwater dahlia when he meets SH.

● Vincent lives underwater but moves on land when he meets lovely.

○ After lovely is turned they move underwater.

3. What does your f/o's friends / family think of your relationship?

Oh, her family definitely doesn't approve. After controlling so many decisions in her life, babying her, and isolation...they obviously think she's incapable of leading a life without them (or somebody trustworthy) holding her hand and making decisions for her to keep her “safe” (They don't trust her). So when they learned about about it, her father was appalled. How could his little girl be in a relationship with an assassin that works for the italian mafia? She should know better! Her mom is a little more lenient. It leaves a bad taste in her mouth that her daughter is with an assassin from the italian mafia, but she wants her daughter's happiness. She doesn't like the decision Viola's made, but she's not as stubborn as her husband. She can see her daughter is happy and safe, and that's what's important. Most of the pushback is from her father.

5. How does your SI/ OC influence your F/O's canon story?

She doesn't influence it much. The two of them met a year prior from the events of part 5 at a bar Formaggio likes to go to. Canon diverges at his battle with Narancia. Instead of being instantly killed, I put it so he's on the verge of death. It aired on the news of how a street was filled with flames and they described the features of a John Doe found on the scene. He's stabilized in the hospital but doctors are confused on how he's riddled with holes but no bullets. Thankfully one of the surgeon's at the hospital was a stand user took over. He was able to remove almost all the bullets and treat his heavy 2nd degree burns with some skin grafting. When Viola finally finds him, the poor girl is just glued to his bedside as he lays comatose for a few days. Instead of being dead, he's simply labeled as 'out of commission'.

6. What does your F/O love most about you / your OC?

How she's just a big bundle of sunshine with him. She's so goofy and laid-back that it's easy to be around her and he gets a couple of laughs at how ridiculous she can get sometimes. With the dark and grim job he has, she's an oasis in the desert that hydrates him – whether it's been a long day or he's feeling a bit down.

10. How does your F/O's stand express their affection to you? If your OC/SI doesn't have a stand let's assume they can at least see/feel their loved ones stand.

Hm...never thought of that, actually. I imagine Formaggio isn't very savvy with words when it comes to conveying affection. He's more of a physical and gift giving affection guy. He's always kind of awkward when he's talking about lovey-dovey shit and stumbling over his words a bit since he's not sure how to phrase it without coming off like some uncool sap. But the message always gets across. Little Feet though...oh man, take Formaggio's physical attention and multiply it by five. This stand is not afraid to show how much it loves Viola. Cuddling her real close, nuzzling her. This always leaves Formaggio flustered, because a stand's personality, actions, and appearance are influenced by the user's soul. Meaning...he super loves her more than he's showing to her. He's probably going “Stop it, Little Feet!”.

12. What is the perfect date for you and your F/O?

For Viola, she just loves going to places. Whether it's around town or a small day trip to another area. She likes getting out of the house to see new things and spend time with the cheese man. Formaggio, however, tends to lean towards staying inside and cuddling. Whether they're just watching movies, TV, or playing a board/video game. Maybe take a lil nap. But he's more than willing to indulge in his little princess's desire to go places. He just wants to see that bright, cheerful smile that lights up his day.

14. What do your family / friends think about your F/O?

Her roommate, Anguria, was a little displeased at first. Out of all the people around, why him? She and Formaggio know each other but aren't on the best terms. But as Viola (and occasionally Anguria herself as well) spends more time with Formaggio, he rubs off on Anguria. So she has a bit of a soft spot for him. Viola's parents? Lord almighty her father despises Formaggio. He's a hitman! Look at how he dresses and the way he acts! He's no good, trouble!!! Her mother, however, is more lenient. She shares the sentiment of her husband about how the cheese man is a hitman and part of the mafia. But unlike her husband, she can see the whole picture – unlike her narrow sighted partner – and sees that her little girl is the happiest she's ever been. She's safe in his hands and he'll treat her right.

15. Was it love at first sight or did it take some time?

For Viola, it was love at first sight. Appearance wise, he's the complete opposite of her tastes. His personality is also not what she looks for. But for some reason...the first time she looked at him, she felt like she was being drawn in. Her mind told her it was futile, but before she knew it she was in front of him at the bar area. For Formaggio, it took some time. After spending some time texting and hanging out every so often, he found that she was much more interesting and fun company than woman he'd talk to at the bar. Pity for her grew into enjoyment of her company and eventually a fondness. She's the complete opposite of what he looks for in a woman, yet she somehow lured him in.

16. Describe your first date together.

Depends on what you call a date, haha. I'd say it's the first time they hung out together outside the bar. He took her out for lunch to keep her company since he had the free time. Most of his reasoning, however, was just sheet pity. He feels bad she's pretty restricted, so why not take her out for a bit of food? He's talked to her for about a week before this happens. So they're on friendly enough terms.

22. If your F/O described you as a kind of animal, what would they describe you as and why?

Hmmm...if you mean behaviorally, she's like a mix of a labrador and a cat. She's cheerful and upbeat, yet she has the mischief of a cat (and other traits like napping, nuzzling him like a cat bumps their owner's hand, likes her space). Appearance wise, she's like a kitten, hamster, or bunny.

24. Is there a favorite article of clothing of your F/O's that you like to wear / cuddle with? Is there a favorite article of clothing of yours that they like to wear/cuddle?

Like any girlfriend, she likes to “borrow” his studded jacket. While the jacket is short sleeved (she gets cold easily), it's his jacket and it makes her happy to wear it.

26. Are you the type of couple to play co-op or do you play games against each other? If you really aren't into videogames - consider this question in terms of other games that could be challenges whether it's board games or sports.

It depends on the game and their mood. If it's a game like Mario Party, they may team up if there's others playing with them. Super Smash Bros they're obvs against each other. Sometimes it's just one of them playing the game and the other watches while making commentary. Sometimes said commentary is suggestions/tips on what they think the other should do next (like in an rpg).

27. Does your ship have a 'ship name' or do you usually just write it as OC/SI x character?

I never really thought of a ship name, tbh. Currently it's just Viola x Formaggio. If I had to choose one...maybe Sunshineshipping? They both are pretty laid-back and cheerful so it suits them.

Formaggio has a decent relationship with Anguria. Initially they disliked each other but she and him grow on each other and they become good friends. Anguria likes to tease him by calling him American brand name cheese (Tillamook, Sargento, Babybel, etc). She learned these from Viola.

Viola has an okay relationship with Melone, as he's Anguria's bf. They don't really talk as she doesn't see him often but they get along well enough. She holds Anguria very highly because she helped pull Viola off the street, gave her a home, and guided her through the process of becoming independent.

For Tiziano/Viola/Squalo:

In this universe, Viola's parents don't mind her dating them. They're a bit disapproving of the fact that she's dating /two/ men, but they trust Tiziano and Squalo (as they're valued customers who have proven their trustworthiness and reliability) to take good care of her. They're unaware the two of them are in the mafia. To them, they're just valued regulars at their sandwich shop.

5. How does your SI/ OC influence your F/O's canon story?

Well, David Productions took some liberties when they did the part 5 anime by adding stuff and cutting certain things (lines and scenes). An added scene showed Tiziano stroking Squalo's chest (heavily implying a romantic relationship) but this never existed in the manga. The two of them were simply just sitting next to each other. I totally ship these two anyway, but it's been officially confirmed by Araki that their relationship 'isn't like that'. I want to keep this romance, however, so I changed it a little.

Rather than be something official, I decided to go with a situationship. It's clear they have a deeper bond and they both know the other has a degree of feelings for the other. I think what keeps them from fully committing is awkwardness (the kind you get when a relationship doesn't work out. Tho I know that doesn't always happen) and they don't feel any need to slap a label on themselves. Whether they stay platonic or romantic doesn't matter. But if one wanted to commit to the other romantically, the other will follow. I feel something like this allows some leeway for a third party.

So instead of them hooking up at some point and becoming a thing, Viola becomes a catalyst. Sometimes it takes just one person, event, or thing to bring together individuals. It's through her love and the relationship she has with them that pushes them to finally commit to each other. Since they both love her as well, she's also part of the equation.

6. What does your F/O love most about you / your OC?

Squalo loves her passion. The way her face and eyes light up when she's passionate about something and how she can be a total goofball. Tiziano also loves her lil goofball antics and appreciates that like himself, she has a pretty level head that sticks to logic and reason.

14. What do your family / friends think about your F/O?

Her parents 100% approves of Tiziano and Squalo. They've proven themselves to be reliable and trustworthy. And they also appreciate their continued patronage at their small family-owned sandwich shop.

15. Describe your first date together.

If you can call it that LOL. It was Viola treating the boys to some coffee as an excuse to have an actual full blown conversation with them. She had decided to stop pussyfooting and finally take a step towards getting to know them.

16. Was it love at first sight or did it take some time?

For all parties it took some time. With Viola, it was like a person to a celebrity – she didn't really know them intimately but she formed a crush on the two of them regardless. At first it was Tiziano but then she grew feelings for Squalo as well. Both of the boys know about her crushes but don't talk about it since she hasn't made any effort to take that first step. It's only after taking that first step (Viola asking them if she could treat them and Tiziano giving her his number to keep in touch and arrange the little coffee “date”. He gave her the number because he knew it was harmless and that he could easily just change his number.) that things started moving.

26. Are you the type of couple to play co-op or do you play games against each other? If you really aren't into videogames - consider this question in terms of other games that could be challenges whether it's board games or sports.

Tiziano doesn't really play video or board games. So usually it's Viola and Squalo. They tend to go against each other unless it's Mario Party. Otherwise they're at each other's throats and bickering like children (Which Tiziano grows tired of after a while and breaks them up.)

Nope, no ship name. Tbh, the only thing I could possibly think of is Sandwichshipping LMAO. Get it? Because she works at a sandwich shop her family owns? She's sandwiched between two hot italian men? Okay I'll shut up.

I’ve been brain rotting over an old story idea of mine and giving it a lil revamp/love! Things are liable to change a lil as I tweak the story but you can find some character blurbs below 8)

Pixel:

Pixel is an android-ish entity from space? Another dimension? No one is really sure but the B.O.O decided to designate him a Glitch. He's defined by having warm compassion, adorable naivety, bubbliness and a love for food of all kinds!

Pixel doesn't remember anything from before he woke up on earth. Despite being comprised of inorganic materials and being defined as a android/robot he functions much like an organic lifeform and has complex emotions, thoughts, gets hungry and breathes.

He has the ability to interact with and manipulate technology.

Ether Amethyst:

A junior detective for the B.O.O Ether is partnered with her Uncle Benny. Ether is defined by having a hot headed temperament, being fueled by coffee and spite, a strong moral compass and her love for plants.

Ethers was raised by her uncle after her scientist parents went missing. She became an officer and was fast tracked into the Bereau of Oddities by the fact she herself is an anomalous entity.

Her abilities are only somewhat known, but she's been observed to use super strength, form hard light constructs and cause minor energy explosions.

Panic:

Panic is another Glitch who found himself on earth. He's defined as being a brat, an anarchist, a graffiti artist, in his edgy emo phase and a lover of small animals.

Panic has decided he needs to stick it to "the man" by graffiting goverment building and corporate property. Honestly he doesn't even fully understand the concept of doing so or being an anarchist but he does love chaos and the attention he gets for causing it.

he's capable of teleporting short distances.

Jam:

Another Glitch. Jam is defined as being tenacious, blunt, nosey, detail oriented and has a love for biographies and non-fiction.

Jam runs a personal blog and likes to consider himself an investigative reporter. He especially has it out for big cooperation. One such endevour to expose mafia ties end up landing him in some hot water and imprisoned alongside another glitch.

Jam is capable of deceiving security systems into thinking he's someone else, allowing him easy access to places locked with finger print, eye or facial recognition systems.

Melon:

The fourth Glitch in the story, Melons been on earth for a fair while. He's defined as malleable, shy, weak, sensitive, empathetic and has a love for reality tv shows.

Melon never could quite find a way to blend in with humans and earth society. He couldn't keep a job and often found himself homeless. It was sort of a relief when the Hunters gut a hold of him and he thought his pitiful life was over. Ari Hunter however, became attached to him and decided to keep him around as a sort of pet. Melon considers himself a part of the family and everything is fine and dandy so long as he doesn't think about what's going on is Spiral's lab.

Melon has the ability to print and create things from his body (Ex. Identification cards, stickers, etc.)

Benjamin "Benny" Amethyst:

Benny is a senior detective of the B.O.O and has worked as an officer for 20+ years. He can be defined as laid back/easy going, charismatic, a bit goofy, having a strong moral compass and a love for retro tech.

He's been raising his niece Ether ever sinse his brother and sister in law both went missing. He keeps the case files locked away in his study and tries to persue leads whenever he can.

Alright so here are ten albums that, by all rights, should have been on the rolling Stone top 500 albums list. In my research I did learn that one of them (Buena Vista Social Club) was in a previous version of the list so why the fuck did they take it off? My first pick is probably a lil contentious but I feel strongly about it, the rest are so obvious that it is insane they aren't on there.

Three 6 Mafia - Mystic Stylez

I feel like I am screaming into the void trying to explain why this album is so good and influential. Despite remaining an underground artist throughout the 90s Three 6 Mafia were one of the pioneers of horrorcore hip hop. But more importantly than that their eerie lofi production and laid back tongue twisting was an obvious forerunner to the trap scene of the 00s and 10s. In fact you can hear them nearly create the trap beat several times in this album. Mystic Styles simply does not sound like it could have come out in 95 to me. It belongs much more alongside artists like Lil Ugly Mane than Wu-Tang Clan.

Beyond the realm of mere influence this is also just an incredibly good album that never deserves the lukewarm response that it got from the mainstream. The beats are so stark and sloppy, with such an emphasis on horror movie style dissonance. The resulting beats are perfect for both slow and lugubrious tongue twisters, and the intense violent horrorcore raps. Overall Mystic Stylez creates atmosphere more effectively than most hip hop artists could ever dream of.

Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner

UK garage and grime are not genres that American audiences usually pay attention to. Hell they aren't genres that most UK audiences pay attention to. Dizzee Rascal changed that when he released Boy In Da Corner. The frenetic pace of Rascal's rapping and the equally chaotic beats are transfixing. The wild urgency with which every line is delivered lends credibility to the fairly goofy and teenagery lyrics. Dizzee Rascal can be very goofy, but the catchyness of the songs and the sheer energy of it all made grime a hit genre worldwide if only for a moment. Also I love when someone flips a sample so well that you can't hear the original without thinking of the song that sampled it so basically r.i.p. to Billy Squire but Big Beat is just the sample in Fix Up, Look Sharp now.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave

Iron Maiden do two things, rip guitar at one million miles an hour and scream at the top of their lungs. But there's actually a secret third thing and it's that they have some pretty decent lyricism. Iron Maiden are consistently concerned with the horrors of war. The subject is all over their previous singles and is present on both the hits on Powerslave. Aces High portrays a panicked pilot trying to survive a battle in WW2, and the more politically charged Two Minutes To Midnight criticizes the commodification of warfare and the fact that capitalists are bringing the world to the brink of destruction for the sake of profits. It's not all super prescient stuff tho. A lot of Iron Maiden songs are just there to sound cool. And they do. The guitars go fast and squeedly and meedly while the drum and bass are galloping along with the intensity of a freight train.

Metallica - Ride The Lightning

Metallica's first album is good, but the follow up blows nearly every other thrash album out of the water. With just a little music theory knowledge and a willingness to experiment Metallica crafted songs with acoustic intros, actually good bridges and breakdowns and even catchier riffs. All without sacrificing the breakneck speed. In fact Ride The Lightning is probably even faster than their previous efforts. It's not just about speed though, it's pacing. The fact that these songs tend to have slow intros that build into fast paced squeedling helps break up the album so it isn't all on all the time. This would also become a staple of Metallica's sound from this album on. But they never nail their own sound as hard as they do on Ride The Lightning. It's probably my favorite thrash album.

Harry Chapin - Verities & Balderdash

Choosing just one Harry Chapin album was extremely hard because basically all of his albums have at least one of my favorites of his on it. But there was no way to get Taxi, 30,000 pounds of bananas, and Mr. Tanner on one album. So I went for the album that I thought Rolling Stone would be most likely to choose. Verities And Balderdash starts off with Chapin's most well known song, Cats In The Cradle, and then it only gets better from there. Harry Chapin is the greatest lyricist of the 70s adult contemporary scene. Fuck it he's probably the best of the 70s period. Chapin's knack for writing complex and sincere emotions that give a voice to perspectives that don't get enough play in popular music. He gives a voice to people who are typically voiceless. Everymen with humble aspirations that still amount to nothing. The musical arrangements are part of what make this work. Chapin's voice is bolstered by a combination of folk guitar and bombastic strings that make every line about failing marriages and fascist fire departments seem exactly as big as they are to the characters in the songs.

Okay I'm just gonna talk about one song from this album. This song was a hit. The Town That Made America Famous. This is one of the best songs every written. Top ten songs of all time easily. In it the narrator describes his life in a tenement building with a poor family and all the poor families that have given up and don't see any prospects beyond day to day existence. It describes their oppression at the hands of their landlord "The best that we all could afford / But still too fine for the rich landlord / To tear it down" and the local police "The cops would make a point to shadow us around our town". And then when a fire starts in their building the fire department refuse to show up as retaliation for someone drawing a swastika on the firehouse. In the narrative it is made clear that the narrator and friends were the ones that did it, but the fire department doesn't know that. The only person who shows up to fight the fire is a plumber, the only working class member of the fire department. The plumber let's the narrator's family stay at his house and the singer reflects that "It's funny when you get that close, it's kind of hard to hate". This song actually makes my heart race with anxiety whenever I hear it. It is so horrifically real. So basically if you are one of my anarchist friends and you think that some fuck from the 1970s writing folk rock can't be infinitely more woke and prescient than anything coming out today then I've got some news for you. Harry Chapin is a fucking comrade.

Buena Vista Social Club - s/t

By the time this album was made in 1996 many of the musicians featured, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén Gonzáles, Elíades Ochoa, to name just a handful of the more prominent ones, had been performing for decades. Segundo was already in his 80s. Almost all of them were Havana natives and played the local circuit, but the Cuban trade embargo severely hampered the ability for this music to reach wider audiences. Now there's no obligation to make your music for any audience other than the one right in front of you, but when American blues musician Ry Cooder ran into visa troubles while trying to put together an afro-cuban project he wound up smashing the Cuban musicians he was already working with into a group with several other local artists in the Havana music scene.

Okay history lesson over. The music on this album is so clearly the work of passionate experts with decades of experience under their belt. The delicate and vibrant melodies represent a slowing down of intensity that had become present in the bolero and danzón music of the time. Though many of the songs were newly written for this album, they feel like a return to some comfortable childhood place. A place that can only be kept alive in song. Solo escuchas un álbum de música Cubana escucha de Buena Vista Social Club.

Apex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Alright if anyone says IDM imma go feral. This is an ambient techno album. We don't gotta be elitist about this electronic music. In fact I think it is important that this is an ambient techno album because it gave the techno scene more mainstream attention than it ever had gotten in the past and it brought the ambient subgenre of techno more into the foreground.

If there is one thing that Richard D James understands it is texture. Every track on Selected Ambient Works is so much more than just a drum beat and a melody. While the drums have a hint of hip hop and the melodies are more present than other techno music, the real star is the diverse sonic textures that populate each track. From distant wet sounds that sound like the inside of a submarine to dry buzzsaw sounds to fuzzy bass lines there is so much to focus in on. When a new sound enters the mix it changes the entire flavor of the song as it's new texture slots into the sonic palate. And while later Apex Twin releases are just as incredible it is on this debut that Richard D James shows restraint. Any less and the songs would be boring, any more and they would be overwhelming. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is one of the high points in electronic music.

KLF - The White Room

The KLF are a weird anomaly, they jumped into the electronic music scene in 87 made a handful of incredibly creative releases and then dipped in 92 after firing a machine gun full of blanks into the audience at the BRIT Awards and deleting their entire back catalogue of music.

So uh The White Room is a house album. Kind of. The KLF were not really easily pinned down to a genre. There are aspects of rave, house, dub, hip hop, acid, etc all over this album. It has a grand and mythological sound that would be at home in an underground rave or a huge stadium. The lyrics are mostly spiritual nonsense. I don't mean that in an "Its spiritual so I hate it kind of way" I mean that The KLF are primarily inspired by the satirical Illuminatus! Trilogy and therefore use satirical takes on spiritual aesthetics. Songs like Last Train To Trancentral make a trip to the rundown shack they used as a recording studio sound like a religious pilgrimage.

Avalanches - Since I Left You

There is absolutely no other album like Since I Left You. There are plenty of sampledelica / instrumental hip hop / turntablist / plunderphonics records but no album is as dedicated to being all of those things at once as this one. The Avalanches conceived of this album while looking at all the weird and forgotten albums that populated thrift stores in their native Melbourne. To quote one half of the group Darren Seltman "[t]he more rejected and unwanted the record that a sample comes from, the more appealing it is, I guess it's almost a reaction to rare record finding, but occasionally things like 'Holiday' come up".

The way that samples are used here is unique. The album is made entirely of samples as is the case with plunderphonics, but the sheer number of samples and the dense layering is incredible. A breakdown of any one song on the album will show dozens of samples flitting in and out things making up the entire backbone of the track that you didn't even register was something you might have recognized. Hell even the very obvious samples like the aforementioned Holiday by Madonna is woven into the mix so well that it is fully divorced from its original context.

Now the other thing that Since I Left You has is atmosphere. Instrumental hip hop in this style has a tendency for one aesthetic and only one aesthetic: driving on the highway at 2:00 AM while feeling contemplative. Trust me that isn't overspecific I have listened to a lot of records. Since I left you is the polar opposite of this. The album is a brightly lit tropical dreamscape. A psychedelic reimagining of a cruise vacation. The joy of creativity and sunshine flows through every second of Since I Left You and it is impossible to come out the other end without a smile on your face. This is one of the greatest albums ever made and it definitely makes my top ten.

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor

The complete and utter lack of any east asian music whatsoever on both rolling stones top 500 albums and the 1001 albums list actually makes me livid. I could make at least a top 100 list of just Japanese music. So I'm gonna do the bare minimum and put on probably the first Japanese albums to hit it big in the west.

YMO have a sound that, while not strictly ahead of their time is still fairly pioneering. There is a lack of the punk/new wave aesthetics of Tubeway Army, but more pop sensibilities than Ktaftwerk. They wind up falling in this unique synth pop place of very sincere bubbliness, but also artistic integrity. Nothing quite sums it up like their cover of The Beatles' Day Tripper. It's a fun off beat cover that retains the poppiness of the original but with a thrumming synth line that almost predicts techno. And techno artists do tend to list Solid State Survivor as an influence.
