Joel Miller and your father were good friends.
When you and your dad moved in next door a little over three years ago, they hit it off quickly. Their tendency to take on random jobs for cash is what bonded them. Also sports.
You were shy then, never able to hold eye contact and always avoiding him whenever he was around.
But thankfully, you've grown into a woman. Your first year at college changed you.
Now, you were back for the summer, eager to sleep in your own bed and spend time with your home-town friends.
But honestly, you were most excited to see Joel.
You wanted him to see how much you've grown. See how mature you've become, how confident.
You always had a little crush on him—mostly because he was the kindest out of all your dad's friends.
You also wanted him to be the one to pop your cherry.
You were a virgin, and kinda always fantasized about Joel being the one to take it from you.
Sure, you’ve done some stuff with guys, but never gone all the way. You were saving that for him.
You knew it wouldn't take long until he made an appearance.
Your dad had offered to host a small get-together to celebrate you being back. He would barbecue in the backyard and hold bets for the basketball game.
It was really just an excuse for him to break out the grill and gamble, but you didn't care. Only because you knew Joel would be there.
You even put on your shortest white sundress and blew out your hair for the occasion.
Your body was buzzing with the idea of seeing him again.
You wondered if he had changed at all.
Your mind started spiraling at the thought.
What if he had changed? What if he was dating someone now? What if he was engaged?
You glanced in the mirror at your nearly perfect reflection and suddenly felt so silly. What if this was all for nothing?
You didn't have long to ponder that thought because the doorbell rings.
You peak out your window and see Joel's truck in the driveway.
Your dad answers the door downstairs, the faint murmur of voices distracting your ears.
The anticipation was gnawing at you like a hungry dog.
After collecting your nerves, you slowly descend the stairs to meet them in the kitchen.
The loud cussing gave away their location. "You've lost your damn mind if you think there's a chance in hell the Privateers of all fucking teams are gonna beat—oh, hey darlin'," Your dad greets you, clearing his throat like he wasn't just cussing out Joel.
His back is to you, but when he turns around, your heart fucking ignites.
He's just as handsome as the day you left. He looks momentarily stunned by you, his eyes flickering all over your figure. God—how was it possible for someone to change so much? You looked more than amazing.
He immediately feels ashamed for basically checking you out in front of your dad, his eyes snapping back up to your face.
"Christ kid, they feedin' you up there at A&M?" He teases before stepping in for a hug.
He even smells the same as he did all those months ago, pine and smoke. You feel relieved.
It seems like the only thing thats different about him is a few gray hairs.
"Hey Joel," you greet with a giddy smile, hugging him back and relishing in his warmth. "How are you?"
Joel is very surprised. He almost doesn't recognize you. You're so much more...more.
"M'alright, aside from the fact that your dad's gonna give me a fuckin' aneurysm one of these days."
You laugh and shake your head. "Fighting about the game tonight?"
"Yeah, this fuckin' asshat thinks the longhorns might lose tonight—messin' up the whole fuckin' mojo," Your dad rambles, his voice beginning to raise before the doorbell rings again. "I'll get that, need to get away from this traitor." He snorts before heading to the door and leaving you both alone.
Joel rolls his eyes before landing his gaze back onto you and your cute little sundress. He crosses his arms over his chest and turns to face you with his body.
"You behavin' up there at school?" He asks light-heartedly, though you find it excruciatingly hard not to reply in some suggestive way.
"Mhm," You hum unconvincingly with a charmingly guilty smile, holding back a laugh.
Joel cocks a brow, pretending to look at you judgmentally. "Lyin’ is a sin, y’know." He huffs, a smile creeping on his lips.
“I’ve been good, just a lotta temptations s’all..” You murmur softly, your body naturally drifting closer to Joel by swaying on your feet.
The tension in the room is palpable.
“Oh yeah?” He tilts his head the tiniest bit to the side, his voice dropping what seemed like several octaves.
In fear of your voice cracking when giving a verbal response, you opt for a nod of your head, but then shrug just to tease him.
He glares at you but then scoffs, shaking his head.
"When'd you become such a little shit-stirrer, huh?" He chides, reaching over to ruffle the top of your hair.
You laugh before pushing his hand away, your fingers lingering on his wrist for longer than it needed to.
His skin is warm, he's almost hot to the touch. You're having a very hard time tearing your eyes away from his face.
All the sudden, your father calls you into the other room.
"Get in here! Max and Ruby wanna hear about your classes." Max and Ruby being your neighbors who had undoubtedly stopped by for the party.
You peer up at Joel, your eyes almost begging him to ask you to stay. But instead, he gestures with his head for you to listen to your dad.
"Go on now," He husks out, sliding his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
Reluctantly you leave him behind in the kitchen, your body still whirring with the adrenaline high you got from just talking to him.
***
It was nice seeing everyone that stopped by for the party. You hadn't realized how much you missed your people.
But Joel was making it hard to concentrate on conversation when you guys were playing eye-tag the entire night.
He really couldn't help himself. There was just something so magnetic about you now—it was impossible to tear his eyes away.
He watched you talk to some of your high school friends, then get up to fetch something from the kitchen.
He couldn’t stop his gaze from falling to your ass once you turned around, his cock twitching in his pants because of the way your dress taunts him with its length.
He clears his throat.
Fuck was he thinking.
This was you he was ogling for christ sake. His best friends daughter.
These thoughts were not allowed. He needed to shut this down.
But the night goes on anyway, people getting more drunk and rowdy with each passing second.
Especially your father, who was currently in a screaming match with his work buddy about the game. They're all crowded around the small box tv in the kitchen, intently watching the tiny screen.
You're watching them from afar, amused by your father and the absurdity of it all.
"Ah fuck, we're outta ice," your dad groans, lifting up the empty bowl in annoyance. "Alright, one of you sons of bitches needs'ta make an ice run, m'not missing this game."
Joel groans out, dragging his hand down his jaw. "We're obviously gonna win—the team's up 46. Make the damn run yourself." He berates your father, who in turn just shakes his head and waves a dismissive hand at Joel.
"Every time I don't watch the game to completion, we fuckin' lose. M'staying riiiight here."
"Fuckin' superstitious bastard." Joel groans from under his breath, picking up his truck keys from the counter. "You want some more beer while I'm out? Maybe my liver too? God knows you need a new one, goddamn alcoholic."
You're laughing at them in the corner, finding their banter extremely amusing.
Then, you suddenly realize this might be your chance to spend more alone time with Joel.
You lurch forward, quickly blocking his path. "Can I come with?"
He looks down at you, a barely noticeable smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He's just about to reply to you before your drunk father cuts in.
"Ya, go with him, he can't carry the ice by himself or else his back’ll give out."
Joel turns his head to yell at your dad. "Shut your damn mouth," he barks, then turns back around to face you, placing his hand on your lower back. "'Course sweetheart, c'mon."
The drastic change in his voice when he talks to you versus your father makes your heart flutter.
He guides you outside to his truck, only dropping his arm from your back when he opens the passenger door for you.
Hopping inside, you settle yourself into the worn down bench seat. Your eyes follow him as he rounds the front of the vehicle, swinging open the driver side door and cranking the engine.
His old country music starts blaring from the speakers of the car, accompanied by the loud drum of his engine.
He’s quick to whip out of the driveway, steering with one muscular arm on the wheel.
You want to drool at the sight—you know your other lips most certainly are.
"So, you got a boyfriend up there at school?" He asks after clearing his throat.
He wants to subtly test the waters, whether he knows it now or not.
You smile, the thought of dating any guy besides Joel was laughable.
"Nope. They're all kinda gross."
"Gross? Yeah, well, most guys your age are." He mumbles, thinking back to his late teens, early twenties—Yikes.
"What about you? Got a woman yet?" You ask, following his line of questioning.
Joel scoffs, keeping his eyes trained on the road. “Does it look like I got a woman in my life?”
He looks down at himself for a second to get his point across, making you follow his gaze.
His wrinkly navy shirt had paint stains on it, his jeans were so old, they looked one wash away from disintegrating, and his beard needed a trim.
You try to stifle your giggle by turning your head away. “Yeah, guess not.”
Your mind starts wandering off, imagining what being Joel's woman would look like...having dinner together...sharing a bed...showering together...
God you wanted to be his girl so bad.
You hear yourself speaking before you even know what you’re saying. “Maybe I can help you—y'know, find a woman n’all.”
Joel casts you an assessing glance, cocking his eyebrow.
“Oh yeah? N’how would you do that?”
He doesn’t even mean to sound sexy but the way he talks makes you wanna melt.
“Well, for starters, a haircut might do you some good.” You tease, scooting closer to him on the bench seat to fiddle with the overgrown hair by his neck.
The way your body is turned to face him gives Joel a clear view down the front of your dress, the skin of your breasts making his cock twitch.
“What’re you talkin’ about? My hair looks great.” Joel knows he’s lying, but he just wants to see you laugh.
Which you do. “Yea, maybe to a blind chick.”
“Oh, you got jokes, huh?” Joel chides, using his free hand to come up and playfully tug at your hair.
You erupt in giggles, swatting his hand away while simultaneously trying to tug his hair back.
Eventually, you two stop messing with each other, but you reiterate that you're serious.
"I mean it—it’d be super fun giving you a make-over."
Joel pulls into the gas station and shifts his truck into park.
"You've lost your damn mind if you think I'm gonna let you get anywhere near my head with clippers."
You roll your eyes and giggle, following him out of the vehicle.
"C'monnn, it'll be fun!" You squeal, trailing behind him as he walks into the store, the bell chiming as you both enter.
He pretends to ignore you, walking along the isles to the freezer section.
"I'll be super careful," You muse, snagging a bag of skittles from off one of the shelves before he can notice.
“I promise I won’t fuck up your cut.” You joke, laughing at yourself.
“Hey—watch it.” Joel warns when hearing your profanity, snapping back to look at you, only half-joking.
You roll your eyes—it's ironic coming from him who cusses like a sailor. You brush past him as he opens the freezer, letting your back lean against one of the glass doors, facing him.
"You're not my daddy, y'know. Can't tell me what to do." You purr, a shit-eating grin beginning to form on your perfect face.
Joel feels his blood pressure spike.
You're making this impossible for him and you know it.
His body moves for him before he can stop himself.
After he grabs two ice bags, he closes the freezer and subsequently steps closer to you, popping your personal space bubble.
"You're right. M'not your daddy." He husks, looking down at you and your parted lips. Your chests are centimeters away from each other, and you find yourself holding your breath. “Consider yourself lucky.”
The way he’s looking down at you like prey yet speaking so nonchalantly has your brain spinning. There was definitely an underlying threat in his words.
Before you can respond, he’s turned around and walking up to the register, throwing down a 10 dollar bill and telling the cashier to keep the change.
Science can’t explain the drastic acceleration your heart rate just experienced—but you can.
Joel fucking Miller.
He had to be insinuating something, right?
Your face is hot and so is the rest of your body, stumbling to catch up with him as he walks out the store.
He lugs the ice into his trunk like nothing happened, the tension in his muscles catching your eyes.
Yet, he still comes around to the passenger side, opening the door for you.
Now was your chance to get him back.
You lift yourself up in the truck, purposefully climbing into the bench seat in a way that gave Joel a clear view of your ass—as well as your thong that wasn't really covering much.
His hand clamps down so hard on the car handle that it nearly crumbles under his grip.
You hear him clear his throat before the door slams shut next to you, making you jump a bit.
When he passes in the front windshield, he's shaking his head and dragging a hand down his scruffy jaw. You can't help but giggle at his exasperated expression.
His takes longer to get into the car and start things up this time, trying real hard not to meet your instense gaze.
When he refuses to make eye contact, you huff out a breath and rip open your skittles bag.
This catches Joel's attention.
"You pay for that?"
"...sure." You murmur unconvincingly with a shrug, trying not to smile. "Want some?"
He watches as you pop a few in your mouth, holding out the bag for him.
Begrungingly, he grumbles out a 'yeah' and holds out his palm.
***
The party had fizzled out when you guys returned. There were a few stranglers sitting around and chatting, but for the most part, things seemed to be dying down.
So much for the ice.
Your dad and his friends had migrated to the living room and once Joel put the bags away, he joined them.
He sat on the couch with a grunt, his legs immediately settling into the manspreading position.
You tried not to drool but your mouth was definitely salivating. To avoid moaning just at the sight of him, you head upstairs, the old wood boards creaking beneath your feet.
You don't see it, but Joel's got his eyes on you, following you with his gaze till you're out of sight.
He feels guilty thinking about how much he wants to fuck you when he's literally sitting right next to your father, but he can't help himself.
It's a while before you come back down, when you do, theres a razor in one hand, clippers in the other.
"No." Joel instantly says, shaking his head.
"Yes." You squeal, beaming down at him.
"Awh, go on Joel, you been needin' a clean up." Your dad chimes in, smacking his shoulder. His other buddies encourage it until he has no choice than to give in just so everyone would shut up.
"Fine—fine. Y'all gon' get yours, thats for damn sure." Joel grumbles, stomping up the stairs.
You're laughing all the way up, bubbling with excitement.
"Come down and give us the reveal when you're done!" Your dad screams to which you giggle.
You basically shove Joel into your bathroom, pulling in a stool for him to sit on.
"You better know what yer doin'." He grunts, sitting down on the stool and looking at you with weary eyes.
"Anything I do to you would look better than what you have now."
Joel promptly stands back up when hearing your words, trying to walk away, but you grab onto his arm. "I'm kidding, I’m kidding! I promise I'll do a good job."
You press on his shoulders to sit him down again, your throat running dry when you see the way he’s glaring up at you.
He’s not actually angry—just a bit peeved that he doesn’t have enough self control to stop thinking about fucking you against the bathroom sink.
You start working, none the wiser, bringing the electric razor to his jaw.
Your bodies are close, Joel can smell your delicious perfume and it makes him wanna eat you up.
You start to notice how sometimes his eyes will flicker to your chest, before abrupdtly looking away and clearing his throat.
Your boobs did look great in this dress, maybe you should give him a better view...
The devilish thought pops in your brain and you're acting it out before you know it.
You set the razor down and grab the clippers, stepping around to the front of his body. "May I?" You murmur, not even waiting for his answer before straddling his lap.
You sit on his thighs and Joel feels himself straighten like a board.
“Kid—what do you think yer doin’?” He immediately sputters out, his expression stern.
He’s trying so hard not to look down at where your dress had ridden up from straddling him. He can almost see your cunt, for christ sake.
“Nothin’.” You murmur, bringing your shaking hand up to trim the hair on his jaw. You curse at yourself for not even having the wits to keep calm, you just know your flushed fave is giving you away.
“Nothin’, huh?” Joel reiterates, completely unbelieving as his eyes drag down your body slowly.
Then, everything shifts.
There’s something more assertive in Joel’s demeanor that you can’t quite put your finger on, but you know it’s there.
You feel his calloused hand on your thigh, your body erupting in goosebumps when he travels it up dangerously high. Using his other hand, he grips your wrist, pulling it down and away from his face.
“Doesn’t look like nothin’ to me.” His voice is a low murmur.
You’re both locked in eye contact now, hearts beating in sync.
He hears your breath hitch and sees how your eyes are flashing between his gaze and lips. He knows what you’re after—he’s just not sure if he wants to give in yet.
You, on the other hand, are dying of anticipation. He’s not budging, so you’re left to drag your hips up his lap and press down on the bulge in his pants.
"Girl—" He growls out before his hands come up to stop your waist from moving any further. "You don't know what your doin'."
"Do I have to fucking spell it out for you, Joel?" You rush out, dropping the scissors and latching onto his shoulders. You're panting and your face is pink, a needy/irritated expression woven into your features.
He feels your nails digging into his shoulder blades and sees that desperate look in your eyes—he's done for.
"No, I won't make ya do that f'me, sweet heart." He murmurs before abruptly picking you up from under your thighs.
A squeak of surprise leaves your lips at his effortless display of strength. You swallow your nerves after he sets you down on the counter, lodging himself between your legs.
"But I am gon make you say it."
Is he teasing you?
No, his face looks too serious for him to be teasing.
Oh, maybe he just wants clear clarification.
Your heart swells at his consideration.
Sucking in a deep breath, "I want your dick in my vagina." You giggle out, knowing he was probably expecting sexier wording. Joel smirks, crashing his forehead against yours.
"Yeah? S'that what you want?"
You're nodding against him, smiling wide because you just admitted something that you never thought you would.
"N'have you done that before? Y'know, dick in vagina." He copies your candance, but you stop smiling.
Out of all the fucking questions, that was the one that you didn't want to be asked the most.
You had hoped if you came on strong and flirted like you had done it a million times, he would've just assumed you weren't a virgin.
But the bastard always had to be so careful.
You didn't want him to know because you figured it would turn him off—then all you'd become is his best friend’s daughter all over again.
You knew if you lied he would just sniff it out anyway, but you tried nonetheless.
"...Yea. Couple times."
You watch as Joel's face forms into a 'yea right' kind of expression before he sighs out.
"Why'a lyin' to me, kid?"
You groan, throwing your head back and hitting the mirror with the back of your skull.
"Thats why—I don't want you thinking I'm a kid anymore. M'not. I'm grown. I'm grown and I want..your dick in my vagina."
He scoffs, dragging a hand down in jaw in disbelief. "Lyin' ain’t a good way to show me your grown."
He was right. You hated that he was right.
Your face crumbles because you think you just ruined this whole thing. Yet, Joel's hands come up to cup your face, holding them there a moment before they drift down to rest on your neck.
"S'alright, you're alright. M'not mad at'cha." He reassures, making sure you're looking in his eyes before he continues. "M'flattered sweetheart, I really am but-"
"Please don't say some bullshit like you don't think you're the man for this job because trust me when I say this Joel, you're the only guy I've ever wanted to be with."
You gush out, your mouth a leaky faucet. But Joel still looks conflicted.
You figured now would be a good time to bring out the big guns.
"If you won't do it cus I'm a virgin, I'll just have sex with the first guy I see, how about that?"
Joel's eyes darken and his jaw clenches. Now you've just pissed him off. "Don't manipulate me like that." He says sternly, to which you immediately falter in your confidence.
"I'm sorry, I don't know why I said that. I didn't mean it." You shake your head at yourself, biting down on your bottom lip. Joel sighs, leaning back but still keeping himself between your legs.
"Look," you start up again, bringing your hand down to hold his muscular bicep. "I've wanted to do this with you for so long. I really want it to be with you. Even if it's just one time, that's okay. Just need you in some way—Joel."
Your voice tapers off into a whisper because his stare intimidates you.
He exhales through his nose before running a hand through his hair and fixing his back to stand up straighter.
"Alright." He huffs, his face looking like he just surrendered in war.
"Alright?" You repeat, hopes high.
"I'll do it," He removes himself from between your legs and slides his grip down to your thighs. "But not right now."
Your heart drops.
"Why not?" You whine like a kicked puppy.
He brings one hand up to pinch your cheek. "Cus your daddy's down stairs, m'not a fuckin' monster." He grumbles before letting go and starting to walk out, but you grab him.
"Fine, but can we at least.." You hop down off the counter and pull him back, kissing him abruptly.
It starts slowly at first, you're both scoping out the scene, but then you get eager.
A tongue slips into his mouth and he returns the favor, his hands finding themselfs back on your hips.
In no time, he has your back up against the wall while he devours your mouth like a man starved. And just as his hand starts sliding up your dress and he's about to go back on his word, a voice comes from downstairs.
"C'mon down Joel, we wanna see the new cut!"
You groan as Joel slips from you, walking back downstairs while wiping his jaw and adjusting the boner in his pants. *** Now it was a waiting game.
Everyone but your dad's friends had left the party; they were just sitting around, watching TV and drinking beers.
You and Joel can't stop making eye contact from the opposite ends of the room. It was like torture not being able to fuck him immediately.
You're quick to conjure up a plan, though.
"Hey dad," you start, twirling a loose thread from your dress around your finger.
"Ya?"
"Didn't they reopen Chambers, like, two weeks ago?" You ask, trying to keep your voice as inconspicuous as possible.
Chambers was the local bar that your dad and his buddies loved to go to. You were just trying to plant a seed.
"Mm, yea, I reckon they did." He sighs out, eyes glued to the TV.
"S'been awhile since we've been there." One of his friends chime in.
"We should go grab a few drinks—I've missed picking up broads from there.." Another friend says, to which your dad promptly hits his arm because he doesn't like that kind of talk when you're present.
Nevertheless, he casts you a questioning glance. "You gon' be alright if we go?"
You try so hard to mask your instant glee. "Oh yeah, I'll be fine! Y'all go n' have fun."
"Alright punkin," They all stand, gathering up their wallets and keys—everyone except Joel. "You comin'?" Your dad asks him.
You glare at him to make sure he understands what you're trying to do.
Joel inhales through his nose before sighing out with a smile. "M'gonna call it a night, boys."
Thank god.
They all grunt and groan in protest, but eventually everyone filters out of the house.
You stand in the door jam and watch as your dad and his buddies file into the car, Joel standing on the porch to wave them off. Words are exchanged between everyone, mostly cussing, as they make their depature.
You both watch as they leave the culdesac, even waiting until you couldn't hear the car engine in the distance before looking at Joel.
Your breath catches in your throat when he turns around to look at you, folding his arms over his chest.
"Sly work." He murmurs, walking forward and forcing you to walk back into the house.
You're not sure why you're so nervous all the sudden.
Because you were pretending to be bold and experienced before, you had no choice but to mask your nerves. Now, that Joel knows the truth, you feel...vulnerable. But in the best way possible.
He backs you into the house before closing the door behind him, his head hanging to look at the ground.
"I had to get you alone somehow." You murmur with a shrug of your shoulders.
It was the truth.
You hear Joel chuckle and watch as he brings his head up to look at you. He's assessing you.
A beat of silence washes over you both.
"You said you would, Joel." You try to say sternly, although your voice wavers because you're scared he might've changed his mind.
"I know what I said." He steps closer, your torso's centimeters apart.
The eye contact is heavy—it feels like an avail against you. But you love it—love him. You're holding back from jumping his bones right by the front door.
"Good." You practically whisper, slowly taking his large hand in yours. You wait until he interwines your fingers before turning around and guiding him up the stairs.
Every creak under his and your feet sounds deafening in the silence between you both.
His hand is sweating, but so is yours.
When you make it to your bedroom, you walk inside and sit on the edge of your bed, gazing up at him.
"How many women have you slept with?" You hear yourself blurt before you can stop yourself.
His lips tighten into a line before he sits down next to you. Your sides are touching, his hands are resting on his knees.
"A few." He grunts, turning to face you. "Lot of 'em forgettable. But this," he gestures between the two of you. "ain't no comin' back from this, you hear me?"
You nod, your hand slipping over his knee. You're trying to trail it higher up his thigh, but he stops you with his hand.
"Need to make sure you know that before we do this. Don't want you regrettin' it later-"
"I won't." You say curtly, only because you know with complete certaintly that there was no way you'd ever regret this.
Everything is still for a moment, the only sound in the room is the both of your breathing. He's staring at you so hard, just waiting for even a hint of hesitation.
But it never comes.
In one swift movement, Joel's lips are on yours, pushing you back into the mattress and settling on top of you.
It makes you dizzy how effortlessly he's making out with you now.
He slots himself between your thighs and you moan at the feeling.
It's embarrassing how little he had to do in order to get you off.
But it's Joel, for christsake—he could just stand there and you'd probably find a way to orgasm at least twice.
It feels like he's engulfing you entirely; his musuclar arms wrapped around you, tongue down your throat, chests pressed together—pure bliss.
Suddenly and devastatingly, he breaks away for just a moment. "Sit up." He husks, to which you immediately oblige.
He lifts your dress up and off, momentairly stunned by the sight of your bare breasts.
"Christ, you're unreal." He groans before latching his mouth onto one of your nipples, using his hand to grope the other one.
You're a mess of moans, but you manage to speak in between. "Take your clothes off too," you whine, pawing at his shirt.
Joel grumbles, taking his time. He strips his shirt off and your hands are quick to latch onto his belt, fumbling with the leather strap but eventually yanking it out of the loops.
His hands come out to steady yours. "Slow down, no rush." He purrs in his texan drawl, making you shiver.
You groan out in frustration, letting your back fall down against the bed again. "You gonna make me wait all summer?"
"If you keep bein' a brat, then maybe." Joel huffs, yanking you back by the legs so he can pull your thong off. He dangles the stringy piece of fabric by his finger, looking at it assessingly.
"Joel!" You squeal, embarrassed. He effortessly holds you down with one hand against your stomach, not letting you swat it away from him.
"This what you go 'round wearin'?" He teases, grinning sharply.
You shrug, all squrimy, prodding him with your legs. "Would it turn you on if I said I wore them for you?"
You almost don't notice when Joel stuffs your underwear into his back pocket because of how drawn you are to his eyes. He's looking at you like a man starved—you love it.
"You been plottin' on me, is that it?" His voice makes your wet hole clench around nothing. He's teasing, but you also feel like you've just been caught.
You definitely weren't as suave as you thought you were.
"Stop makin' fun of me. " You huff with a flustered face, narrowing your eyes at him.
Joel smirks, finally prying apart your legs and taking a good, long look at your dripping cunt. "Christ almightly..." He groans at the sight of you, his cock straining hard against his jeans. "Pretty lil thing."
Your back arches off the bed when you feel Joel's thumb brush against your folds, tantilizingly slow. "Nice n' wet, atta girl." He muses, spreading your lips apart with his fingers.
You wanted to make a joke about him inspecting you like some doctor, but the words died quickly on your tongue when you felt him stroke your clit.
"Joel," You moan, hips squirming impatiently. "Fuck, I need you,"
"You got me, babygirl," Joel murmurs before lowering his head and devouring your cunt completely.
His tongue laps at you with fever, primarily focusing on your aching clit. The sensation nearly makes you pass out, especially when he pushes a finger inside of your hole.
"Ohmygodohmygodohmygod," You whine, fisting the sheets so hard that your knuckles turn white.
Having someone eat you out and it being actually enjoyable is one thing, but having Joel Miller eat you out and it being amazing, was blowing your mind.
He didn't even take breathers.
Joel was consuming you like he didn't need air. Soon, you feel another finger stretch you open, then another, until Joel has three fingers smoothly pumping in and out of you.
It quickly becomes all too much for your little brain. "Hmph..fuck Joel m'gonna come," You whine, your hips staggering against his mouth.
He doesn't answer you, in fact, Joel just wraps his musclar arms tightly under your thighs, securing you in place. In this position, you were rendered completely immoveable.
He kept you right where he wanted you.
"Waitwait, shit, Joel," His tongue is relentless, drinking you up like he was dying of thirst in the desert. Tears are forming in the lining of your eyes, the stimulation overloading you.
"Fuck!" You cry, coming completely undone beneath him. Your entire body shakes with pleasure as you finish, thighs squeezing the sides of his head.
Joel laps you all the way through it, humming contentedly against your soaked cunt.
When your body goes limp against the bed, thats finally when Joel lifts his lips off you. His entire face down past his nose is drenched in your juices; the sight makes your stomach flutter.
"Holy fucking shit Joel," You whimper, out of breath, chest heaving up and down. "That was amazing."
Joel lands a couple soft warning pats against your cunt, making you flinch and squirm from overstimulation.
"You cuss like a sailor, y'know that?"
"S'hard not to when you're makin' me feel so good." You're mumbling, wiping at the tear streaks on your face with the back of your hand.
"Mm, I know," He hums in that caring tone, crawling on top of you and placing a few chaste kisses on your lips.
It doesn't take long for your libido to rise again, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and eagerly kissing him back.
You bring a hand down to palm at his boner, giggling into the kiss. He groans at the feeling, rutting his hips into your hand. "Fuck me now please," You say breathlessly into his ear, nipping and licking at his neck.
He scoffs at your enthusiasm.
Finally, Joel pulls his pants off, letting his cock spring free and slap against his stomach.
You're enamoured by the sight of it. Long in length, even bigger in girth. You practically start drooling.
"You got a starin' problem too." Joel grumbles, grabbing you by the jaw and tilting your head up so he can kiss you again.
You chuckle into his lips, breaking away for a moment to speak. "I can't help it. It's handsome..you're handsome." You muse, getting a fist around his cock, managing to stroke it a few times before Joel stops you.
You don't have time to think or argue before he turns you over onto your side, situating himself behind you.
He's spooning you, except his left arm is hooked around your chest and his right has your leg lifted up, allowing his cock to slip between your folds.
Once again, he's got you right where he wants you.
"Joel," You bring your hands up to hold onto his forearm, pushing your ass back into him. "Put it in." You all but demand, trying to desperately grind your cunt on him.
He tightens his grasp on your collarbone, pulling you tighter against his chest. "Keep your leg up baby," Joel mutters lowly in your ear, letting go of your leg to guide his cock to your entrance.
His fat tip prods against your willing hole, making you dizzy with need. He runs his fingers along your folds one last time, gathering up your slick and using it to lubricate his cock.
Your heart is beating a million miles per hour. The moment you had been dreaming of for so long was finally here.
Joel, taking your virginity—your prayers were answered.
Slowly, Joel starts inching his way inside, the stretch making you gasp.
It feels fine at first, just a dull ache, but then it hurts—bad.
You squeeze your eyes shut and grit your teeth, trying to push through the pain. However, your body clenches down on the intrusive appendage, causing Joel to groan out.
It feels good for him, but he's been around the block a few times to know what's happening.
"You okay? I need'a stop?" He asks in that raspy voice of his, to which you immediately shake your head.
"Nonono, god no, don't stop. Just—just ram it in." You say foolishly, making Joel scoff.
"No, sweetheart, as much as I want to—bad idea." He brings his hand back down between your legs, rubbing a few slow circles into your clit. "Just relax and open up for me, thaaaats it," He encourages in that tone that lights fires in your core.
The perfect stimulation on the bundle of nerves made you forget all about the pain, letting your hole ease up a bit.
He takes the oppurtunity to keep breaching you deeper, peppering kisses to your neck and back in the process. His fingers stay glued to your clit, and before you know it, he's half way inside.
Your holding onto him so hard that your nails are leaving imprints on his forearm.
But you're so full of him and it's perfect. You can feel every twitch, every notch, every vein; or maybe you're just convincing yourself you can. Either way, mewls and moans are slipping from your lips and feeding Joel's growing ego.
"You feelin' good sweetheart?" He rasps in your ear, thrusting back and forth till he reaches that half way mark. You nod frantically, craning your neck to face him, desperate for a kiss.
He satisfies your wishes, kissing you slowly and passionately, like everything you've ever wanted.
His dick in you, his tongue down your throat, his arms pinning you to him. Fuck.
But you still want more.
In a shocking move, you slam your hips back against him, burying him all the way inside.
Moans fill your little bedroom, both his and yours, and for a moment, a flash of regret hits you like a truck.
He's big, and it fucking hurts.
But once the initial pain subsides, it’s like ecstasy.
"Fuck—girl, what'd ya do that for?" Joel hisses, tensing up because he's trying not to come fast.
"Couldn't wait," you pant, tears spilling out the corners of your eyes. "Please move." You're pleading because being stationary is somehow even more painful. You squirm in Joel's strong grasp, trying to stop the ache between your legs.
He's no match for you.
In a gentle but swift motion, Joel situates himself on top of you, closing your thighs together and putting them on one side of his body—all while still inside of you.
He cages you in with his big strong arms, looking down at your needy expression as he gradually starts rocking his hips into you. You're twisting your torso to remain looking at him, clawing at his biceps with your nails.
"This how you like it?" He huffs out, the sweat evident on his brow. "Deep n' slow?"
You want to respond to him, but it's hard to because every other sound you make is a moan.
He's so deep and never fails to hit the one spot that just makes you melt.
Opting for a non-verbal response, you nod with fever, gyrating your hips to meet his thrusts.
He chuckles, the sound alone makes you wanna come.
His name slips from your lips like a prayer—Joel finds it so cute because when he hits deep, your voice raises in pitch.
But he's no better, he'd been groaning in your ear since the start of it. He really cant help it, your cunt is like a silky, wet vice molded perfectly for his cock.
Joel lifts one of your legs up to his chest, securing his muscular arm around your thigh to keep it there. He continues he's deep thrusts, only this time picking up rhythm. He also brings his other hand down to lazily rub circles in your clit.
Christ.
Your head lolls back and your eyes roll into the back of your head. The stimulation was insanely perfect and all too much at the same time.
Your body wracks with jolts and spasms—your body trying to cope with everything it's feeling. Joel takes notice, a proud and lopsided smile spreading across his face.
"M'gonna cum," You whine, your body writhing against him with each thrust.
Your pussy is clenching down on him with each piston of his hips, Joel is not far behind you.
He rubs your clit in a way that makes you come undone, your back arching up off the bed and your toes curling from pleasure.
At the same time, Joel picks up his pace, only to pull his cock from inside you and pump it a few times before unloading his seed onto your naked torso.
For a moment, the only sound in the room is the heavy breathing coming from the both of you. Joel's staring down at your pussy, entraced with the way your hole is constricting around nothing.
Then, he looks at your face. Your eyes are closed, your lips are parted, your chest is heaving up and down. He's admiring you and all your fucked-out glory.
He brings a hand up to your face, wiping off the tear stains with his thumb. "You alright?" He husks out, looking down at you assessingly.
"M'perfect." You coo, slowly opening your eyes and leaning up to kiss him. Joel returns it, loving the way your mouth opens so readily for him.
He'd have to try it out with his dick next time.
"Can we go again?" You murmur into his mouth, your arms wrapping around his shoulders.
Joel scoffs because he thinks you're kidding. You're not. When he realizes this, he shakes his head in disbelief, pushing you down onto the bed by your shoulders.
"Don't worry, we got all summer."

I love your drabbles!!
What about nanami preparing to confess to us?
i wrote this with teacher! nanami x teacher! reader in mind :)
you never in a million years thought the nanami from the class next door would like you.
sure, you had an undeniably stupid crush on him—the kind that made you stare too long when he rolled his sleeves up, or made your brain short-circuit when he adjusted his tie with those his hands. but he was nanami. effortlessly cool, the most responsible adult in the building, the man whose serious expression could make a room full of five-year-olds sit up straight. he was way out of your league. so when he pulled you aside in the middle of the kindergarten hallway—two fully grown adults wearing aprons with cartoon animals on them—and said, "i like you," your brain malfunctioned.
“oh, uh, you like—what, my new markers? yeah, they’re pretty great, got them on sale, actually. or wait—did you mean you like my lesson plan from this morning? yeah, the pigeon thing was a hit, huh? unless—oh god, you meant my classroom decor, didn’t you? listen, the rainbow border was a choice but—”
“i like you.”
“right, so when you say ‘like,’ do you mean as in friendly coworker appreciation, or like as in—like my handwriting? because i know it’s neat, but—”
“i like you.”
you opened your mouth. closed it. opened it again. nanami sighed, then—he took your hands. your hands. in his hands. like it was nothing. like it was normal.
and he was blushing. cheeks dusty pink, a ridiculous contrast to his sharp blonde hair and the completely straight-faced delivery of his confession.
meanwhile, your entire nervous system short-circuited. the world blurred for a second—just you, standing there, trying to process what was happening—until a piercing shriek shattered the moment.
“OH MY GOSH, MR. NANAMI IS HOLDING MS. Y/N LIKE A PRINCE!”
followed by more shrieks. the tiny, high-pitched chaos of your entire class losing their minds.
you turned your head in slow, mechanical horror to see dozens of little faces pressed up against the glass door, hands smushed against it, their muffled cheers breaking through the barrier. nanami’s class, having witnessed the commotion, joined in. soon, the whole hallway was filled with kindergarteners chanting ‘KISS! KISS! KISS!’ like a cult.
nanami let out the heaviest sigh of his life. “i should have picked a better place for this,” he muttered.
“you think?!” you whisper-hissed, face now hotter than the sun.
he squeezed your hands. seriously. earnestly. like he meant it. like he meant all of it.
the chanting only got louder. the kids were now banging on the glass.
“so…” you swallowed, eyes darting around. “wanna run?”
nanami nodded.
you ran.

TW: Yandere!Gojo, baby trapping
I know it's fanon that Satoru became a fuckboy once Suguru left, which I've written about before. However, I think the reality is that intimacy is rare for Satoru. He's busy, and vulnerability is his biggest fear. It's why he always maintains his childish, energetic persona, because after Suguru tore out his heart and stomped on it, opening up to another person was out of the question.
However, even the strongest isn't immune from developing crushes.
You were a new hire, a foreign sorcerer that recently transferred to Jujutsu Tech. You were born the same year as Suguru, and the similarities didn't end there. You might not look like him, though you were attractive in your own right, but so much about you echoed the man who broke Satoru's heart. Despite your serious demeanor, you knew how to take a joke, and were seriously competitive. You were cunning and sly, with a wit that he admired. You were loyal to those you cared about, but ruthless to your enemies. Best of all, you tolerated him in a way few could.
He found himself falling hard, and was delighted to know you felt the same way... sorta. You see, while he was planning a wedding, you wanted something purely physical. Satoru didn't mind indulging your lust, but he expected it to transform into love at some point. And it did, on his end. But you, you were a different story.
Your trajectory was similar to Satoru's. You too had a high school sweetheart who broke your heart, and you responded to it by shunning relationships. The difference was that you indulged in a decent amount of flings and one night stands. What started as a way to ease heartbreak became a stress reliever and your favorite hobby. Moreover, being a sorcerer, conventional dating was risky. The risks weren't canceled out by someone like Satoru.
In fact, they were amplified.
Put simply, you didn't want to be a clan leader's wife. You enjoyed being a sorcerer, but if you wed the leader of a clan, you'd be reduced to a baby maker. You wanted kids one day, when being a sorcerer had lost its thrill. Maybe they'd fill the void, but for the time being, you were happy childless.
Unfortunately for you, your time without kids is nearing an end.
You see, once Gojo hears that you wouldn't mind being a mommy one day, he decides that's how he'll keep you. If his expensive gifts and lavish dates aren't enough, certainly a baby will be. Because after losing Suguru, he isn't willing to miss out on HEA with a great love again. If he has to use...questionable methods, so be it.
And hey, if a baby doesn't work, he has a cozy little room waiting for you, complete with security measures only he could disarm.

YES! YOU GET IT!!!
The angst of it all is just perfect, honestly.
the back and forth between his kids ending up as robins or vigilantes in general.
the fear of finding them dead like he did Bruce.
the fear of not returning alive to his kids like Bruce did.
But seeing younger him in them when they fight to be robin or anything else-
the same way he used to fight Bruce.
and he knows he can't keep doing it alone, knows Gotham needs a light he can't give to them now that he's Batman, something that only Robin could give.
but that fear is so deeply rooted that he feels stuck in place, unsure of what to even do.
I have some notes i wrote down back when i was brainstorming the au-
Jason wants to be a hero- he wants to fight alongside Dick. He wants to help Crime Alley- his home, and better it.
Dick's heart seizes in fear and he absolutely forbids it, a hard no. His foot is down. "I can't lose you too, Jason. I can't lose another family member, I can't watch someone I love die to crime another time. Just... grow up a normal kid. Please."
Jason is angry at this answer, his hands clutching into his hoodie as he shouts with tears in his eyes, asking Dick how he thinks he feels watching Dick go out all alone as Batman and coming back looking like a damned corpse? If Dick dies... then Jason is all alone again. He's afraid of another parental figure dying.
Dick is left reeling as the young boy storms off, his heart dropping into his stomach, stuck between a rock and a hard place, feeling like the weight of everything was finally crushing him.
But he doesn't take back what he says. It hurts, but he doesn't want to see Jason ever get hurt. He doesn't think he can handle it. He doesn't think he could survive it.
He's lost enough already, hasn't he?
And then one night, Jason steals Dick's old Robin costume from his early days from the display case, wrinkling his nose as he dawns the pixie boots. Because pixie boots, really Dick?
And he's sneaking out once Dick has left for patrol, long after the young boy was supposed to be asleep.
the suit is ill fitting but he feels light as air as he stumbles his way across rooftops, using his skills he'd learned while living on the streets to prowl unseen by Batman.
Or, at least he thinks he's being sneaky, until Dick is snatching him up by the bright yellow cape, and in a loud angry voice he's never had directed at him from Dick, the older male lets his anger gets the best of him. Yells at him on some random rooftop, all the emotions and fears he's kept bottled up for so long spilling out as he sees Jason in his old Robin suit.
He says things he doesn't mean, things he immediately regrets as he see's Jason's heart break and tears bead up in Jason's eyes.
watches with dread as the young boy just breaks down in a way he never has before right there on the rooftop, and before Dick can even apologize, the boy has run off, quick as lightning.
It takes two excruciating hours before he finds Jason hidden somewhere in Crime Alley, still sobbing and curled up, tucked away in some hidden corner, soaked from the rain.
Dick collapses in front of the boy and just draws him tight to his chest, covering the shivering boy with his cape and warming him up, his back against a wall and the tiny boy cradled in his lap, his head tucked beneath his chin.
they don't speak for a long while, silent as they both try to process their own emotions, as Dick tries to navigate something he never thought he'd have to.
"I'm afraid of losing you like I lost him." he admits, quiet in the wind as he holds the boy closer, almost desperately like he's afraid he'll disappear if he doesn't. "I just finally started living again... and i can't lose the one light I have."
its silent for a while once more, Dick weighing his options on what he should do,
Jason speaks up next, speaking of the way crime alley needed help, help that Batman couldn't give on his own. Things that he just couldn't understand without growing up there.
Dick listens to his son, listens to the passionate way he speaks, listens to how Jason opens up about Catherine, and about the gangs and how its barely livable there anymore.
Dick can't deny him anymore after that.
He breaks and gives in, a small, wet laugh leaving his lips. "There's no one else I'd rather be my robin." he whispers.
They don't discuss it anymore that night, Dick carrying the boy back to the manor.
They both end up with bad colds and Alfred scolds the both of them, but he doesn't leave the boy's side the whole time, trying to make up for his mistakes. for all the hurt he caused.
Once they're better, Dick lays out the rules, trying to find solutions to make them both happy.
School will be Jason's number one priority, and Jason can only do short patrols on weekdays, longer on weekends.
He would not go out until he had a few months of training, except to keep watch for Batman.
Dick would take him on patrol through crime alley, and they would work together to figure out what they needed to do to help.
He was not allowed on missions or to fight any super dangerous fights- no matter how much he wanted to. not until he was on the field for a long time, thank you very much.
Jason hates some of the rules, but he finally relents after a long time debating over it, knowing that Dick had some good points, even though he's never tell the man that.
Dick lets Jason redesign the robin costume to suit him better, and the first thing Jason does is add pants. he was really fucking cold in Dick's outfit and he didn't like it.
Jason becomes crime alley's Robin, recognized as one of their own. It starts to slowly blossom under his guidance, bit by bit over the years.
(one day I'll actually write this fully fleshed out as a fic and not just 3 am rambles, lol)
(and one day i'll write about the other kids too, i just haven't written past like, Jason and Tim meeting for the first time bc i'm brainstorming chapter by chapter oops.)
Lying awake at 5 am thinking of the au I planned out where Batman dies before Dick ever becomes Nightwing, so Dick becomes Batman and he ends up adopting all his siblings instead.
19/20 year old Dick Grayson staring down at a like 10-13 year old Jason Todd trying to steal his tires and understanding why Bruce took him home that day at the circus.
Dick Grayson staring at Jason who brought home a young Tim and feeling like he can never let Tim go, or maybe him finding the young boy taking photos one late night.
Dick finding out about (baby!) Damian and stealing him. That's *his* son now.
Him finding Cass and just accepting he has a daughter too. Doesn't even fight it anymore.
Duke? He just sighs and wraps the kid up in a blanket. Alfred's already got a room set up for him by the time they're back at the manor.
Eventually, Tim and Steph date and break up (she gets to finally have a good time as Robin PLEASE) but Dick gets said when she stops coming to family dinner. She starts coming again bc she can't stand the puppy dog eyes. She's his unofficial daughter.
Barbara and Alfred just watching all this go down and staring to place bets on when they think another shows up.
Dick but he just inherits his father's adoption problems.
Ft uncle Clark and aunt Lois with (baby!!!) Kon and eventually a baby Jon.
Ft an unholy amount of angst almost every damned chapter.

CLASS CRUSH .ᐟ
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
✸ TA!jeno x fem!reader | genre. fluff | w.c. 2.0k | ♡
↳ synopsis. in which your shy and reserved TA from your literature class started acting a little different. harboring a crush on you for months, he finally gets the courage to confess to you…on valentine’s day.
↳playlist. unkown - nct dream, coffee - beabadoobee, can i be him? - james arthur, walk with you - nct dream, pretty u - seventeen, your eyes - stray kids.
Tumblr media
a typical afternoon in your literature class, which happened to be one of your favorite classes, your professor stood at the front going about his lecture of romantic poetry. the sounds of pens and pencils scribbling as your class took notes.
a shadow falls over your desk, and the faint smell of fresh mint filling your nostrils. you look up from your paper and see jeno. he was this classes' TA. he also happened to be part of the reason you definitely didn't mind this class. he was always so patient and kind when explaining things, and had such a comforting presence about him- something you admired.
"hey," his soft husky voice warming your heart. lifting your head to glance up at him, your gaze fell down to the papers in his hands, taking note of the tight grip he had on them. something was a little...off about his usual calm demeanor.
"here's the handout," he said tearing his eyes off you and placing the paper out in front of you on your desk. instead of instantly moving to the next person, he lingers.
you wait a couple more seconds before speaking yourself. "thanks," you mutter quietly.
"oh! uh- yeah you're welcome," he stammers and moves past you to the next desk.
you have trouble holding back a small smile as you watch him, seeing the slight redness of his ears.
that was one of the first times you started to notice his slightly different behavior towards you. you started to notice jeno stealing small glances at you during classes, and every time, he would immediately advert his eyes.
sometimes when you would have group assignments, you found him enthusiastically responding to your comments and points. something the other students seem to catch on to.
it even got to the point where you found out he was noticing little things about you.
you came into class one day with a different notebook than usual, your other notebook having been full, you went out and bought a new one. the design was similar, the same colors that matched all your other stationary.
jeno was walking past your desk, trying to keep his eyes away from you, just as you pulled out your notebook. class hadn't started yet, so he figured it would be okay to talk to you.
"i like your new notebook," he offers with a small smile and a motion to your notebook.
"hm? oh! thank you.." you glance from your notebook to him.
"of course," he says and tries to walk away as normal as possible.
you sit there thinking about the interaction. how had he noticed before any of your friends? or even at all?
all of these interactions have been the reason that for the past couple of weeks, you couldn't get jeno out of your mind. his professionalism seeming to waver when he was near you. the way he acted slightly more tentative to you- all of which the class seemed to notice too.
today was no different, except for that it was valentine's day. you tried to ignore all the pink and red decorations around campus. while it wasn't your least favorite holdiay, you could've gone without seeing all of the couples kissing and smiling and holding hands as they do normally. for some reason it was just different on valentine's day. not that you were bitter about it, you just wished that one day you could experience the love that other people did on valentine's day.
breaking you from your thoughts, your professor started the lecture. today he had a simple assignment, which you were thankful for. you couldn't focus much anyway. not with the lingering eyes you felt from across the room. the subtle glances throughout classes, not so subtle anymore. you felt a slight tint in your cheeks and shook your head trying to get to work. you'd be lying if you said jeno wasn't an attractive man, anyone could see that.
eventually, class came to an end, and everyone starting to pack up. you moved slowly, not in a hurry as your classmates seemed to file out pretty quickly. leaving you and a few other people scattered in the room.
"hey.."
you turn and look up seeing jeno nearing your desk. his less formal attire today- a white button down with some black slacks, adorned with a pink tie. and of course, his usual silver-rimmed glasses.
"hi jeno," you offer a small smile as you stand from your seat. hsi expression was slightly nervous unlike during class, which was a face you started becoming accustomed to when he talked to you.
"i, uh.." he trails scratching the back of his neck and glancing at the door for a second. he contemplated just running out and hoping you would forget he even came up to you.
"i was wondering if, um i could talk to you for a minute? outside of class?"
your eyebrows raise slightly in surprise and you comply as you grab your bag. "sure,"
you two step into a quieter part of the hallway. you look over his form as he fidgets with the small stack of papers in his hands- most likely ones that needed grading.
"i hope this isn't weird to you or anything, but i've been meaning to ask you-tell you something," he begins with a soft but uncertain voice.
you wait curiously.
your gaze making him more nervous. he clears his throat and starts again.
"i've really enjoyed getting to know you, through- in class," his words coming out a little rushed. "you're always so engaged and i..i really admire the way you think. i-" he pauses to take a deep breath.
"i like you," he blurts out keeping his eyes on yours. he felt his cheeks starting to burn, matching the pink of his ears. "i have for a while now...but i wasn't sure it was even appropriate. you're a student and i'm your..well, the TA, so i didn't want to make things difficult or uncomfortable,"
your heart seems to skip multiple beats as jeno confesses to you. your own cheeks feeling a slight blush to creep up. he looked so vulnerable, with his nervous gaze and pink ears and shaky grip on the papers.
"i don't think it's inappropriate, not at all," you smile at him. "and i think it's really sweet that you're telling me," you add.
unfortunately he takes your words as an upcoming rejection and his face falters a little. nonetheless, he keeps a hopeful tone.
"really?" you nod still equipped with the smile on your face that he adored so much.
"so...does that mean that you'd maybe, um, like to go out with me sometime? or whenever you're free?" his eyes flickering with a hopeful gaze.
laughing softly at his adorable reaction, you nod again. "yeah, jeno, i'd like that a lot."
you can see the pure relief that washes over his face. a shy smile forms on his face. "okay, great, i could text? if that's okay?"
"perfect," you reply, a shy smile of your own mirroring his, as you exchange numbers.
you walk away, glancing back you catch jeno still standing there, grinning to himself.
and just like that, valentine's day became more bearable.
the early evening sun rays painted the campus walls with warm hues as you waited near the library. your heart fluttered thinking about what was to come as you waited for jeno, wanting to be early. you looked down at your phone for the time, as you heard footsteps approaching. looking up, you smiled softly seeing jeno walking towards you with an equally nervous expression, yet his face was adorned with a charming smile.
"hi," he greeted you with that smooth, soft voice you were used to.
"hi," you replied putting your phone away. "so, what's the plan?"
letting out a breathy laugh, jeno scratched the back of his note. "well, it's nothing fancy or anything, but there's this little quiet little diner off-campus that i like. i thought it'd be pretty nice?" his eyes flickering to yours for approval.
you beamed up at him. "that sounds perfect," his shoulders relaxed a litte.
the walk to the diner was light-hearted, filled with easy conversation, though you couldn’t help but notice the way jeno’s fingers twitched at his side a little. almost like he wanted to reach out for your hand but wasn’t sure if he should just yet. the thought made you smile to yourself, and when you ‘accidentally’ bumped his hand with yours, you saw the way his ears turned red.
the diner itself was cozy and warm, with checkered floors and booths tucked into corners. they also had a few valentines themed decorations adorning the walls and booths. jeno led you to a table near the window, where the golden glow of the sunset made everything feel warm and intimate. he handed you a menu, his fingers brushing yours briefly before he quickly pulled away, his blush deepening.
“i actually come here a lot after late classes,” he admitted, fiddling with the menu in his hands. “the food’s nothing fancy, but it’s really good.”
you smiled. “i’ll be the judge of that.”
he chuckled and looked back to his menu.
as you both ordered and the date went on, jeno seemed to relax more. he opened up about little things—his favorite books, his funniest moments as a TA, even how he always tried to act calm in class but was secretly terrified of saying something dumb in front of you.
“you? terrified? you’re, like- one of the most calm and collected people i’ve ever met,” you teased, but with truth behind it.
jeno laughed softly, shaking his head. “not when it comes to you. i… i overthink everything when I’m around you.”
your cheeks heat up and a bashful smile creeps on your face.
after being asked why he looks down to the table, trying to figure it out for himself. “i really don’t know why, but my brain just goes blank when i look at you. sometimes i feel like im going crazy,”
the admission made your cheeks heat up, and you looked down at your plate to hide your smile. you knew that deep down you shared the feeling with him, the more you looked at him in class, the less you could focus.
at the end of the meal, jeno insisted on paying, claiming that it was how it should be done- especially on valentine’s day.
you walked back to campus under the soft glow of streetlights keeping the both of you calmed. jeno finally mustered up the courage to take your hand in his. his grip was gentle but firm, and when you glanced at him, his face was red, but he was smiling. a content smile that made your heart skip a beat.
“i had a really good time,” you said softly when you reached your dorm.
“me too,” he replied looking down at you fondly.
you squeezed his hand before stepping closer. “thanks for today, jeno. it was perfect.”
before he could say anything else, you leaned in and placed a soft kiss on his cheek. and when you pulled back, his wide-eyed, flustered expression made you laugh, but he quickly recovered with a shy grin.
“happy valentine’s day and goodnight,” you said with a cheeky smile, opening your door.
“goodnight,” he echoed with a slight starstruck look. his hand brushing his cheek where you’d kissed him, his smile lingering even as he walked away.
after watching him walk away for a bit through the window, you leaned against your door for a moment. the beautiful night replaying in your mind, your heart feeling lighter than it had in a long time. smiling to yourself, you thought , ‘maybe valentine’s day wasn’t so overrated after all.’
and as you glanced at your phone, a new message popped up:
jeno: i can’t stop smiling. can we do this again soon?
you laughed softly, already typing back your reply.
you: definitely :)

I'm Better Than Him- Kang No-eul 0.2
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Pair: No-eul × F!Reader
Context: You had a boyfriend who was a complete jerk, and a best friend who was completely gay for you. When No-eul found out about the breakup, she made sure you completely forgot about the guy, and consoled you in every way.
Warning: none.
Words: 8k
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In the middle of the night, your body woke up. With a jump, you sat up in bed. You heard a noise of something falling, and looked around, your eyes still adjusting to the light in the room, since you had fallen asleep with the light on. When your senses returned, you noticed that something was vibrating, you looked at your bedside table, noticing that what was vibrating so much was not there. It was then that your eyes met the ground, and you saw your cell phone on the ground. The vibration ended, and you bent your body, reaching for your phone. A missed call from No-eul, your best friend, and a message.
No-eul🩷
"Hey pretty, u still up?" 1:30 AM
You sighed, and resumed the call, only having to wait two seconds until you heard your best friend's voice through the cell phone "Hey pretty, how are you? Did I wake you up?" The girl asks, dragging out the "hey." Her voice was cheerful, and on a normal day you would have smiled, laughed, and made a joke about the situation. But not today. You kept your countenance serious and expressionless. "No, I was just in the bathroom. Do you need anything?" The sentence ends up coming out more dryly than intended, and No-eul notices it immediately. She takes a few seconds to respond, thinking about what she would say. "No, just checking you out. Go to sleep, it's late for the kids to be up at this hour." No-eul teased, and she could almost see the exact expression on your face when she heard a short but sincere nasal laugh.
You rolled your eyes and sighed, getting up from the bed. "No-eul, good night." You hung up before you could hear the girl's response. You threw the phone onto the bed and took off your black leather trench coat, throwing it onto the armchair. You stood in front of the mirror, taking off each piece of clothing. One piece, one thought, one new doubt, one new insecurity, one new feeling, one new piece of your heart ripped out. "Was my body not beautiful enough?" You ask yourself, looking at your half-naked body, wearing only your underwear. You looked at your breasts in your bra, your belly, your waist, your hips. Were your legs too thin for him? Or too thick? Was your waist too defined, or nonexistent? Were your breasts too small or too big? The space between your thighs? Was there even a noticeable space between them? Was it your face? Your hair? Your manner?
You touched the soft skin of your belly, feeling a knot in it. A sigh escaped your lips and you felt a shiver, obviously having spent those minutes without clothes, your body felt cold. You quickly went to bed, grabbing your pajamas and quickly putting them on, going back to bed, which you were beginning to consider staying there forever, like a shell of pain. However, No-eul's morning was normal. She woke up at 5, went to the gym, took a shower at 6, and left home for work at 6:50. But obviously, she didn't stop worrying about you. When she saw that you weren't at work, she sent another message to you, asking if you were okay. She sighed, putting her phone down and going back to work. No-eul is a lesbian, and you know it perfectly well, however, you don't know that No-eul has had the biggest crush on you since the day you met.
You noticed that No-eul would sometimes flirt with you, but it was all in fun, right? After all, you were completely straight... Right? Well, it was the only (half) secret that No-eul kept from you. She loved you, and tried to show it, but the more she tried, the more blind you became to these facts, and it irritated her. But what irritated -and hurt- the girl the most was when you showed up with your idiot boyfriend. She hated him. The hungry way he always looked at you, the touches on your waist, cheek, neck, or the disgusting kisses on your jaw and down to your neck. It all made her sick. She knew she was better, much, much better than any man you had ever dated, or kissed. She knew you better than anyone else, she knew how to love you, how to treat you like you truly deserve. She just knows better.
And she knows something is wrong when you miss work. She, however, waited until the end of her shift to grab her things, her car keys and drive to your house. She knocked on your door loudly, waiting for your to answer. A minute later, she knocked again, this time longer and stronger. She only stopped when she saw your pajama-clad figure, disheveled and with puffy and red eyes. She was slightly startled and looked you up and down. "What the fuck happened to you?" She asks, looking at you in shock. It’s not like it’s the first time she’s seen you like this, you’ve seen each other in all sorts of ways. But for No-eul to see you in that state was completely abnormal. You made room for the taller one to enter, not saying anything. "Would you like something to drink?" You asked, hoarse from having just woken up, not answering the girl's question.
No-eul walked around the room already familiar, and sat down on the couch. "Water, please..." She answers, looking at you from behind with a frown and half-closed eyes conveying strangeness and concern. When you return, No-eul notices a glass of wine in your left hand, and a glass of water in your right. You place both glass objects on the low table in front of the sofa, and sit on the sofa sideways, standing in front of No-eul. "Are you going to tell me what happened?" No-eul insists, picking up the glass of water and taking a small sip. "You weren't well yesterday when I called you, you miss work, you don't reply to my messages and you still sleep all day. You're not sick, because yesterday you were perfectly fine. What's wrong, Min-young? Is it with your parents? Your sister? Nam-Chul?"
When No-eul says the boy's name, your gaze drops to your lap, holding back tears. You try to hide it, picking up your glass of wine and sipping. Noticing your watery eyes, No-eul's eyes darkened with anger. "What did he do?" She asks, if you didn't know the girl you'd say all her worry was replaced by anger. The girl took a deep breath and leaned her body slightly, touching just above your knee and lowering her face to meet your eyes."I'm your best friend... You can tell me anything. Whatever it is, I'll help you and support you. You know that. But if you want me to help you, you have to talk to me... If you want a hug, I'm here, okay?" You looked into the girl's dark eyes, and you see sincerity in the girl. You thought for a few seconds. It wasn't about whether you wanted to talk to the girl or not, what you wanted most was to tell her this and cry in her arms, but you couldn't speak, it was stuck in your throat.
No-eul realized yourdifficulty and raised her head, sighing. She approached you, and gently grabbed your chin, making you look at her. You obeyed her touch, looking into her eyes once more. "Let's do this...I brought your favorite ice cream," the girl says slowly and quietly, nodding toward the bag left on the floor in the hallway that you hadn't even noticed. "Let's watch a movie or the series you like, while we eat and then if, and I repeat: if you want, you talk about what happened, hum? How does that sound?" The girl asks with a small smile on the corner of her lips, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I like that idea..." You mumble, looking over your shoulder at the bag you left on the floor. "I'm going to take a shower first. You can start getting things ready." No-eul nodded, with a victorious smile and stood up, first picking up the bag, and heading to the kitchen afterwards.
You also got up and went to your room to take a shower. You closed the bedroom door and entered the bathroom, locking the door. You hurried into the shower, wanting to get back to the couch with No-eul. You dried yourself quickly and put on some comfortable clothes, leaving your hair wet. When you returned to the living room, No-eul was already sitting down, with a large blanket on her lap, with several snacks spread out on the small table in front of the couch. You smiled and ran over to her, sitting down on the couch, next to the girl. No-eul is startled, but lets out a laugh and puts an arm behind her back, snuggling closer. You smiled and sighed as you felt the girl's warm body against yours. You adjusted the blanket over the two of them and picked up the remote, choosing a series for both of them to watch. It certainly wasn't how you thought you were going to spend the rest of your afternoon, but that's one of the things you love most about your best friend: the way she always knew what you needed, even when you don't even know what you needed.

[11k] a seemingly random attack seems to be the start of a big problem for the new jersey devils and you find yourself one of the main targets. fortunately, you have one of the team's best as your appointed bodyguard. unfortunately, he seems to want nothing to do with you.
new jersey mob masterlist || nhl mob masterlist
warning: this is a mob au. topics and themes such as violence, blood, murder and gun use are prevalent and constant throughout the fic. please keep that in mind if you choose to proceed with this fic and the whole series.
.
“Did no one ever tell you as a kid that this much sugar is going to rot your teeth?”
“Well, brother dearest, considering you were the one who raised me, I think that’s a question you should be asking yourself.”
“You know, it’s kinda your fault her nickname is Candy,” a voice sounded from the background of the phone call. You beamed, almost imagining your brother’s face scrunching up at the callout. “Her sweet tooth is strongly encouraged by you.”
“Shut up, Jack.”
“Just pointing out the facts.”
“No one asked.”
“I assume you don’t want an eclair then?” You questioned, interrupting the bickering boys on the phone. The silence that followed made your grin widen.
“Tell Peter to give me the biggest one.”
“He always does,” you retorted, phone tucked between your ear and shoulder as the small bakery came into view. “Tell Jack I’ll get him those lemon muffins he likes.”
“You’re the best, Candy!” Jack’s voice rang through the phone.
“I know,” you answered simply, letting the bell ring above your head as you pushed the bakery door open.
You smiled when you saw Peter—a sweet boy, no older than his mid-twenties with ruffled hair and constantly flushed cheeks—standing behind the counter with a stained apron on and a determined look on his face that softened when he saw you.
“The usual?”
“You know it.”
“Coming right up, Candy!”
“Luke thinks Peter has a crush on you,” Jack’s voice came through the phone once again.
“I’ll shove a cupcake down his throat before he can try anything,” Timo grumbled.
You rolled your eyes. “You’ll do no such thing, I’d rather not get banned,” you said, grinning a little when you heard Timo scoff. “And as flattered as I am, he’s a bit too soft for me.”
“I bet he wouldn’t be so soft if you—”
“Zip it, Hughes.”
You snorted. “I’m high maintenance. Peter couldn’t handle that.”
“No one in their right mind can.”
“I can think of a few who could.”
Timo huffed. “It’s like you’re trying to make me feel murderous on a Sunday. It’s God’s day. I don’t kill on Sundays.”
“Well,” Jack started. “You did kill that dodgy fisherman a few weeks back on a Sunday—”
“Do you ever shut up?”
“Pete is a good guy, surely you’d want her to date him over anyone else—”
“It’s like you have a death wish.”
“He’s winding you up,” you snorted, making yourself comfortable since the bakery was empty and settling on the counter by the cash register. “And you fall for it every time.”
“Whatever,” Timo grumbled, and you could almost imagine the frown on his face. “Why are you over at Peter’s anyways? I thought Nico sent you to Philly.”
“Jonas went alone instead,” you shrugged, despite the fact the boy couldn’t see you. “Apparently back up wasn’t needed and the negotiations were going fine. He wants me to head towards Buffalo instead. They are avoiding his calls.”
Jack snorted. “Leave it to Nico to send Candy instead of leaving a voicemail.”
“I’m scarier,” you grinned.
Timo laughed. “Yeah, just as terrifying as a pink poodle.”
You rolled your eyes. “I’ll suffocate you with my fur coat.”
“You wouldn’t be able to catch me in those heels.”
“You underestimate me, Tims,” you grinned.
He let out a disgusted groan. “Don’t call me that.”
When it came to life in the mob, there were a few rules you had to always remember.
One: never trust someone not sworn in. No matter what they say and no matter what they do to try and prove themselves, no man or woman not under that same oath and protection will ever have your back.
Two: make alliances with your brain and not your heart. It sounded stupid but far too many times have people found themselves entering stupid deals and negotiations to get what they wanted, far too blinded by their own desires to take off their rose-tinted glasses.
Three: always—and emphasis on the always—be alert. You never know when an enemy can strike. You never know who’s lingering in the shadows, ready to catch you off-guard.
Unfortunately for you, it was the third rule you found yourself forgetting as the sound of glass smashing echoed through the small bakery.
There was a ringing in your ears, muffling the sounds of screams and yells and gunshots as the world seemed to move in slow motion around you. You were distantly aware that one of the voices was your brother on the phone, the other Peter somewhere in the back. But you could barely focus on your own thoughts as you quickly dropped to the ground, your back pressed against one of the booths as the gunshots continued to rain through the shop.
You cursed yourself for not being alert. You cursed yourself for leaving your gun in your car. You cursed yourself for not even peeking to see how many men were shooting before you ducked to safety.
You were so far in your own thoughts that it took a while to realise the gunshots had stopped.
You jumped out of your skin when you felt a hand on your shoulder, turning to find Peter staring back at you with a pale face and wide eyes. His lips were moving but you couldn’t seem to process the words he was saying.
“Calm down,” you managed to mutter out, placing your hand over his and squeezing. “You’re gonna be okay.”
But the boy shook his head. “We need to get a doctor.”
You blinked, your brain hardly keeping up with him. “What? Why?”
Peter almost looked nervous as he spoke, as white dots began to blur your vision and his face morphed into blobs of colours. His mouth was moving, a pink and reddish blob that kept changing shape, as you strained to hear what he said.
And then, your vision went black.
“You were hurt!”
“Timo—”
“Seriously injured! Hospitalised!”
“It doesn’t count as a hospital if it’s just in the house—”
“You were shot!” Timo gritted out through clenched teeth, his fists clenched at his side so tight that his knuckles were white.
“Shot is a bit of an exaggeration,” you murmured under your breath.
Timo turned on his heel, his eyes narrowed in a glare. “A fucking bullet went through you, how the fuck would you describe that?”
“An unfortunate occurrence,” you retorted despite Nico shooting you a look to behave, to not wind your brother up any further. “It hardly warrants the need of a babysitter.”
“A bodyguard,” Nico corrected.
“Semantics,” you waved him off.
“You were a part of a targeted attack against us,” Timo hissed, the vein on his forehead starting to pop out. “A bodyguard is exactly what you need right now.”
“Everyone in this fucking room has been a part of a targeted attack,” you snapped back at your older brother. “News flash! It comes with the fucking lives we live! You are being far too dramatic over one little bullet wound.”
“My mistake for caring,” Timo deadpanned.
“It’s not the worst I’ve experienced and you know it,” you retorted, watching the boy’s mouth snap shut. You let out a sigh, a wave of guilt washing over you as you pushed yourself off Nico’s couch and walked closer to your brother. “I’m fine. I promise.”
Timo opened his mouth.
“Timo,” you said in a softer voice, watching his shoulders drop. “Look, if anything weird happens in the next few weeks or if we have any reason to believe they will specifically attack me again, then I’ll agree to a bodyguard.”
Timo looked conflicted. “Promise?”
“Pinky promise,” you replied, grinning far too wide for someone who was barely allowed out of bed so soon. “Now, put your big boy pants on and go do something productive.”
Nico’s brows furrowed together. “You know I’m the boss here, right?”
“Send him somewhere far away for the week!”
“You promise you’re okay?”
“Geez, what are you, my mother?” You grumbled, your fingers dancing over the hangers on the rail as the boy followed behind you. “I’m okay. Doctor just said no strenuous activities.”
Alex raised his brows. “Are you mentally okay? Emotionally okay?”
“Forget my mother, are you my therapist?” You muttered, turning to look at the boy with narrowed eyes. “How much did Timo pay you?”
Alex scoffed. “What makes you think he paid me anything?”
“Because you never come shopping with me, let alone willingly,” you retorted with something quite triumphant in your smile.
“Yeah, well, shopping is a strenuous activity when it comes to you,” Alex grumbled under his breath, readjusting the countless bags and hangers in his hands. “I couldn’t let you hurt yourself any more than you currently are.”
You beamed, lightly patting his cheek. “That’s why you’re my favourite, Holtzy.”
“Timo also threatened me,” he added, a small smile tugging on his lips when he saw you roll your eyes and turn back around. “He can be scary, even when he’s across the country.”
“Nico should’ve sent him somewhere further,” you sighed, shaking your head before turning your attention back to the dresses on the rack. “Speaking of, I thought Nico put you in charge of checking up on Peter.”
“Jack and Luke wanted to take over,” Alex shrugged. “They wanted to make sure he was actually okay.”
You pressed your lips together in a frown. “Is that even safe? Both of them to be seen with Peter?”
“You think someone from Toronto is lurking in a bush outside the bakery, just waiting to see the three of them together?” Alex deadpanned, unphased by the look you gave him. He had been on the receiving end far too many times. “They’ll be fine. Nico wouldn’t have allowed it if it was unsafe.”
“Nico is also completely distracted by the fact Trouba supposedly wanted to meet to talk about some alliance or something,” you snorted.
“How do you know these things?” Alex questioned, his head tilted in curiosity.
“I have my ways,” you grinned knowingly. “And I have my ways of knowing if you repeat any of this to anyone. Especially Curtis. He is such a gossip.”
Alex paused before nodding. “Yeah no, that is fair. You think he will take Trouba up on the offer?”
“If the incentive is right.”
“That was frustratingly vague.”
“I know.”
“Well, distracted or not, Nico would never let anything bad happen to Jack and Luke, or Peter by extension,” Alex said, sounding so sure of himself. “He has worked hard to keep Peter’s presence in Jersey under wraps. He wouldn’t let Jack or Luke ruin that, not when they were the ones who asked for it.”
“Yeah, yeah,” you hummed, waving him off. “You’re right. Blah blah blah. You done yet?”
Alex rolled his eyes. “You asked.”
“Yeah but I was hoping you’d agree with me it was unsafe so we had an excuse to visit after this,” you retorted, flashing him an innocent smile over your shoulder. “Wanna split an apple pie?”
Alex sighed but he agreed.
Just like you assumed, the next two weeks passed without a hitch or whisper of another attack.
After Nico practically threatened to make Timo your round-the-clock bodyguard, you got the proper rest and care needed for your wound to mostly heal. You were still a little tender—and banned from your and Dawson’s weekly yoga sessions—but you felt close to your normal self, able to join some of the others on the less physical jobs, like visiting the factories and handling negotiations.
Unfortunately for you, it was week three when disaster struck again.
“I’m surprised Nico even let you step foot into this place,” you teased as you closed the car door behind you, finding the boy already rolling his eyes at you.
“Sometimes a pretty boy has to do some dirty work too,” Jack replied, grinning boyishly as he looped his arm with yours before walking towards the warehouse.
“Your ego truly astounds me,” you commented.
“Says you,” he retorted, laughing as he tried to ignore your heel jabbing into his toes.
It was a routine check-up, something that wasn’t meant to take longer than thirty minutes—forty tops, if you left Jack to do it alone and get distracted. But the shipment had just left and you needed to make sure nothing was left behind and assure no tracks were left behind. Nico preferred people close to him doing the checks.
You had been mildly surprised that he sent you and Jack together, though, you had a feeling that the whole peace treaty with the Rangers was taking over Nico’s plate.
“Everything looks good,” Jack said as he jogged back towards you, pushing some hair out of his face. “What about your side?”
“All good,” you confirmed. “Let’s head back before Timo gets there. The dick made a bet with me that he would be back from Washington before us.”
Jack paused. “Isn’t he meant to be staying the night?”
You huffed. “Please, the boy has been like a fucking helicopter parent. Unless it’s on the west coast, he doesn’t like being away for a day because apparently something will happen to me if he’s not here.”
Jack shook his head fondly but his hand rested over yours, giving it a small squeeze. “He just cares, Candy.”
You felt a flash of guilt in the pit of your stomach. “Jack—”
“Take it from a guy who lost a sibling, it isn’t fun,” he said, trying to smile and laugh through it but it fell flat.
You frowned, not giving the boy a chance to run off before you wound your arms around him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that,” you murmured softly.
“I know,” Jack whispered, his arms wrapping around you in return. “He just wants to know you’re safe. God knows I’d freak out the same if it was Luke in your position.”
“A pair of overbearing brothers you are,” you teased, pulling back with a softer smile on your face. “You’re a good brother. And a good friend.”
Jack raised his brows. “Wow, I didn’t even have to pay you for that compliment.”
You rolled your eyes. “I meant you’re a good friend to Peter. How’s he holding up?”
“A bit shaken,” Jack confessed as you both walked back towards the car, his lips turned downwards. “The damage to the shop wasn’t too bad, mostly just replacing the windows and cleaning up. But he’s freaked out that people are on his tail.”
You hummed, nodding. “And you? How do you feel?”
Jack couldn’t help but let out a laugh. “I’m not the one that got shot.”
“Yeah but,” you paused, waving your hand around. “If Peter is freaked out—”
“Anything freaks him out,” Jack mused. “It was just a normal, run of the mill, everyday kind of event that happens when you’re in the mob. There’s nothing or no reason to believe it was anything but a fluke—”
BOOM!
You felt Jack’s body covering yours before you even realised you were on the ground. You managed to peek over Jack’s shoulder, your eyes widening at the sight of the warehouse—the same one you were inside mere minutes ago—bursting into flames that were growing and spreading and burning wildly.
“Okay, I take it back,” Jack muttered, his eyes glued on the burning building. “Not a fluke. Definitely targeted. We are fucked.”
You swallowed. “Dibs on not calling Nico.”
“I knew it.”
You rolled your eyes at the cock-sureness in your brother’s voice.
“This is serious,” Nico spoke up, shooting Timo a look before he went on a rant—again. “That’s two attacks in three weeks. And we have no fucking idea who’s behind them. Or if they are even linked at all.”
“It’s hard when we have a plethora of enemies,” Jesper deadpanned, raising his hands in mock surrender when Nico shot him a look. “Just saying.”
“Stop reminding me,” Nico grumbled.
“Guess we can cross the Rangers off our list though, right, Boss?” You teased, wiggling your brows despite the glare you were receiving.
“Candy,” Nico sighed. “Your brother is right. I think it’s best to have a bodyguard around, just for the next few weeks until we work things out.”
“Yeah because a bodyguard is sure gonna help when the building blows up, this time with us in it,” you deadpanned.
“I’d be more observant than Jack,” Timo commented.
“Hey!” Jack frowned.
“Absolutely fucking not,” you quickly stood up, shaking your head. “You’re not going to be my bodyguard. I’m not having you hovering over me twenty-four-seven. You’re bad enough as it is.”
Timo clenched his jaw. “Yes, I am—”
“No. She’s right. You’re not,” Nico spoke up, quickly interrupting you both. “But you are getting a bodyguard. Just to take precautions until we confirm whether you’re a target or if you just happened to be at the targeted places by chance. Maybe having another pair of eyes around you, someone who’s vigilant, will be insightful.”
“I’m not five, Nico, I can take care of myself,” you insisted, your arms crossed over your chest. “A babysitter isn’t going to do anything other than be a nuisance.”
“The bodyguard,” Nico corrected with a pointed look. “Is necessary and will not be negotiated.”
“This is ridiculous,” you said to him.
“And he’s going to be with you around the clock, always by your side,” Nico said.
Your nose scrunched up. “No.”
“Every shopping trip, every little run into town,” Nico continued.
You could feel your skin prickling. “Nico—
“And I’m moving him into your room to sleep, armed and ready just in case,” Nico insisted.
This time it was Timo who stepped in. “Woah, wait a second—”
“And I know the perfect guy,” Nico grinned. “Marino will be your bodyguard.”
It was like a switch flipped in your head, your irritance and fight disappearing as you grinned at him. “Okay.”
“I—” Timo narrowed his eyes at you. “Why are you suddenly okay with this?”
“Because I know how to listen to my boss, Timmy, you should try it some time,” you grinned at your brother, patting his shoulder before you sauntered out of the office.
“Stop calling me that,” Timo groaned as he followed you out.
Jesper waited a few moments before your voices were clearly down the hall. “You did that just to stir some drama, didn’t you?”
“Yup,” Nico answered quite happily.
“Thank god, everyone was sick of the pining puppy dog eyes,” Jack grumbled from the spot on Nico’s desk he was sitting on.
You had known John Marino for as long as you had been with the Devils.
He was quieter than the rest, happy to linger in the corners of the room and observe everyone. It makes sense why Nico had chosen him as the role of your bodyguard, it was John’s nature to notice things most people missed. But, ultimately, it confused the fuck out of you.
Because for as long as you had known John, you were also certain the boy didn’t like you.
You could count on one hand the amount of conversations you shared with the boy, and even those conversations lasted thirty seconds at most. And for a majority of those thirty seconds, it was you talking and him saying three words in response, if even that.
You had eventually accepted the fact that some personalities just clashed, that maybe you were too loud or too energetic or too extroverted for John’s liking. You tried to tell yourself you were okay with it because, at the end of the day, he was still polite and curt with you.
But you would be lying if you said a small part of you wasn’t offended that you were nothing more than a glorified acquaintance with John Marino.
So really, it shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone that you were going to use the next few weeks with him to get him to like you. Or figure out what the hell his deal was.
“You think John hates you?” Dawson repeated, like that was the detail he couldn’t seem to wrap his head around in your whole plan.
“Hate is a strong word,” you said in response. “I’m simply going to get him to come out of his shell a little. With me specifically.”
“Not the kinda coming he wants to do with you,” Dawson muttered under his breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing!” Dawson quickly cleared his throat. He turned his gaze back towards the corridor the two of you were currently walking down. “How do you plan to get him out of his shell?”
“I don’t need a strategy to make friends,” you mused, grinning a little when the boy rolled his eyes in response. “My plan is to not have a plan. I am sure with the time spent together, he will eventually open up.”
“That still sounds like a strategy,” Dawson commented but you didn’t get the chance to reply, the door to Nico’s office swinging open and a beaming Nico taking the focus of your attention instead.
“Candy, brilliant, you’re here!”
You blinked. “Yes, you asked me to be. You literally sent me a text ten minutes ago—”
“Anyways!” Nico spun around, still grinning a concerning amount as he wandered back into the office, a few of the other boys already inside. “I don’t like the idea of waiting around for another attack to get answers.”
Jesper raised his brows. “Meaning?”
“Meaning I want both attacks investigated separately so we can see if there are any dots joining,” Nico stated simply, leaning against his desk. “Bratter, you and Jack are on warehouse duty. I want to know everyone who stepped foot in that place in the last month.”
“Bit hard to do when the cameras blew up with the building but sure,” Jack grumbled.
“Candy,” Nico’s eyes shifted to you. “You and John will be on the bakery.”
“Is it really a good idea to send her back to the bakery?” Timo interrupted, stepping forward.
“I’m not ignoring it for the rest of my life because of one attack,” you told him. “Me and Johnny can handle it.”
“Johnny?” Timo repeated incredulously before spinning around to find John, who was standing near the back of the room with a blank expression on his face. “Since when were you Johnny?”
John only shrugged in response.
Timo’s eyes narrowed.
“As I was saying,” Nico spoke up again. “This is how we are doing it.”
“What about the rest of us?” Timo asked.
“You have other jobs to do,” Nico said simply. “I am not putting our lives on hold over a few attacks. We continue everything else like normal. I don’t want it to get out that we are concerned over these attacks, they will make us look weak.”
Jonas’ lips twitched upwards. “And god forbid you look weak before you have the chance to woo the Rangers—”
Nico had elbowed him in the gut before he managed to finish that sentence.
“You’re staring.”
You blinked, wondering for a few moments if you had imagined the boy speaking. The two of you had been sitting in your room for the better part of the last two hours, combing through the security footage from the bakery that Peter had sent you.
And in that time, John had said two words, a simple ‘on it’ when you sent him half of the security footage to watch over.
Somewhere in that time, you found yourself sitting against your headboard, watching the boy sitting at your desk with narrowed eyes like you would somehow be able to figure him out through observation.
Clearly, that didn’t work very well.
“Staring is considered a compliment,” you replied, watching the way his lips twitched upwards. You waited for him to turn around and go back to the footage, but you were surprised when he leaned back in his seat to look at you.
“And are you?” He questioned, watching your head tilt in confusion. “Complimenting me?”
“No,” you shook your head. “I’m wondering why you’re here.”
John raised his brows. “You are aware you were shot a few weeks ago, right?”
“Yes but you didn’t have to say yes to Nico,” you pointed out.
John stared back at you for a few moments before he spoke. “I wanted to, Candy.”
He didn’t give you the chance to reply before he turned back around, his focus returning to the hours of security footage he had been watching minutes before.
It took a little over three days to watch all the footage from the bakery’s security cameras just for it to come up with no leads. The warehouse was no better, with no real evidence or clues on who set up the attack.
Nico was trying to keep a brave face and pretend like it wasn’t that big of a deal but you could see that it was unsettling him. Someone clearly had a target on the Devils’ back and the reason was unclear, which made it ten times harder to anticipate what the next move would be. And with the deal with the Rangers coming up, the last thing any of you needed was a weakness to be exposed.
“We will figure it out,” Nico kept saying whenever it was questioned by some of the other members, the ones not as privy to the inner circle talks in his study late at night. “We will be fine.”
You were pretty sure he was trying to convince himself of that fact too.
“We need to do something,” you said around a week after the investigation into the attacks began, lying on your bed with your head hanging over the edge. “How the fuck have we not found anything?”
“Because whoever is behind it is good at covering their tracks?” Jack suggested from his spot beside you on the bed.
“Or because we are trying to catch them with little to no evidence,” John added, standing by the door of your room with his hands obediently behind his back. “You know, since everything was either burned or destroyed or has a million bullet holes in it.”
“Will you sit down? You’re stressing me out,” you muttered to him.
“No,” John stated simply.
Jack snorted. “He is jealous I took the bed.”
“I am not.”
Jack shot you a knowing look. “He totally is.”
“There has to be something else,” you sighed, your eyes fixed on the massive pile of clothes you had thrown over the back of your desk chair. John had wrinkled his nose at all the sequins and glitter, a look which soured when you suggested he add some colour to his outfits. The constant all black was starting to make you feel angsty.
“We’ve tried everything, bar kidnapping random people off the street and interrogating them,” John retorted.
“My plan was way more nuanced than that,” Jack insisted. “Stop making it sound dumb.”
“He can’t make it sound dumb if it is dumb,” you pointed out.
John’s lips twitched upwards.
Jack scoffed. “Since when did you two agree with each other?”
“Since you became an easy target,” you retorted, hissing when the boy reached over to pinch your arm. “Ouch, asshole.”
“It was deserved,” Jack insisted.
You turned your head to look at John. “I thought my bodyguard was meant to protect me.”
“Because Jack and his noodle arms are such a big threat,” John deadpanned.
Jack quickly sat up in bed. “Woah, now wait a second—”
“It would take more than a second to fix your noodle arms.”
Jack narrowed his eyes at the boy. “I do not know why Luke likes you so much.”
John shrugged in response.
“Is Peter’s shop still under renovation?” You questioned, interrupting whatever weird staring contest the two of them were doing. The mention of his friend was enough for Jack to tear his eyes away from John to focus on you instead.
“What? Yeah, they are,” he nodded with his lips turned down. “Why?”
“Good,” was the only response you gave, quickly swinging your legs over the side of the bed as you sat up. Both boys looked at you with confused expressions, watching as you hooked the straps of your heels on one finger and reached for one of your coats with the other hand.
John straightened. “What are you—”
“Hurry up, Johnny, we are leaving in five,” you stated, grinning when you noticed him let out a heavy sigh like he accepted the fact he wasn’t getting answers from you.
“What about me?” Jack called out.
“Don’t know and don’t care!”
Peter’s Bakery was a cute and quaint shop that didn’t stand out amongst the others on the street. It fit right in with the friendly, homely neighbourhood and was a huge hit with the locals. It was a simple place, hidden right in plain sight.
Despite the connection to the Devils, there was no reason for it to be targeted in an attack.
“Eighty percent of Peter’s customers are locals,” you told John as you walked towards the bakery, your heels clicking against the cement in a melodic pattern. It was comforting, something to hold onto as memories of the last time you were here flooded to the front of your mind.
“So?” John questioned, his eyes hidden behind the sunglasses he had slipped on before the two of you left the house. You could bet your bottom dollar that he was already analysing everything, probably had been since the second the two of you got out of the car.
“Ten percent are people from surrounding areas and the remaining ten are tourists from states excluding the ones in the immediate surrounding area,” you continued. “And the chances of the attacker being a local is slim to none so—”
“You think the person behind all this visited the bakery before the attack?” John finished for you.
“Bingo, Johnny,” you grinned at the boy, watching as he simply pressed his lips together.
“And you think he is just going to remember every customer he interacted with?” John asked, the judgement clear from his voice. “We already combed through the CCTV footage, we know there was nothing weird—”
“That was on camera,” you pointed out. “They could have given a different vibe in person.”
“A different vibe?” John repeated in a dubious tone.
“I don’t see you jumping with any better ideas,” you retorted as the boy just sighed in response. “Cheer up, Johnny, the ever present frown is going to give you wrinkles.”
John didn’t get the chance to even try and respond before you were pushing the door to the bakery open. Despite the damage to the shop, the bell above the door remained intact and dinged as the two of you walked in. It was a mess, with cans of paints and planks of wood and tools sprawled over the place, but the vague smell of cookies still somehow lingered in the air.
“Sorry, we are closed for—oh,” Peter poked his head out from the back of the store, his lips twisting into a smile when he saw you. “Candy, I didn’t know you were stopping by.”
“We just had a few questions for Jersey’s favourite baker,” you smiled innocently.
“We?” Peter repeated, his eyes glancing past your shoulder like he was noticing John for the first time. A look passed over his face before he cleared his throat. “Marino.”
“Perry.”
“It’s Peter.”
“Whoops.”
“Play nice,” you pouted, lightly elbowing John’s side before turning your smiling face back to Peter. “Excuse him, he gets pissy if he misses his afternoon nap.”
John’s jaw clenched as Peter laughed.
“Come on in,” Peter smiled back. “I’m all yours for the next hour before the builders come back from their lunch break.”
“How convenient,” John murmured under his breath, lifting his hands in mock surrender as you shot him a look before the both of you followed him into the back of the store.
“So, that was useless.”
“No surprise there.”
Your eyes narrowed into a glare, your mood only souring further when you found the boy wasn’t even looking back at you. His gaze seemed to be glued ahead, his jaw still clenched like it had been the whole time you had been in the bakery.
“What is your problem?” You asked, wrapping your coat further around your body as the wind began to pick up. “You have been in an awful mood since we arrived.”
“I’ve been completely normal,” John answered. Those stupid sunglasses on his face were starting to piss you off.
“You have not,” you scoffed, shaking your head. “You were fine joking around with Jack back in the house but the second we left, you were in a downright horrible mood—hey!”
“Keep your voice down,” John grumbled, his hand now locked around your arm as he tugged you closer to his side.
You let out a snort of laughter. “You’re funny if you think—”
“Someone has been following us since we left the bakery,” John said, his voice low and barely a muscle on his face moving as he spoke. “Lower your voice and follow me.”
And for once, you listened.
There was a growing temptation to look back. To just take a peek over your shoulder and see the face of the person who was following you, to try and get an idea of who it was. There was no coincidence that the two of you were being followed the second you left the bakery, the same goddamn place you were first attacked.
You wondered if it was the same person. You wonder if they were the one that shot the gun that hit you. You wondered if—
“You’re spiralling,” John’s voice cut through your thoughts.
“Am not,” you retorted, but it sounded weak to your own ears.
“Lie better,” John insisted, his hand tightening around your arm as he spoke.
It was like you could hear the footsteps behind you now, like they were loud and clear the second John had pointed them out to you. When you sped up, so did they. When you slowed down, so did they. They were matching your moves and following the two of you and the car was too far away and you couldn’t call for backup without alerting the person and—
“Shhhh, breathe for me.”
You blinked before you even realised what was happening. Torn out of your own spiralling thoughts, you found yourself pressed against a wall, the cold bricks jabbing into your back but the comfort was the least of your problems. John was pressed up against you, not an inch of you exposed to the rest of the world as he kept you pinned between him and the wall.
You lifted your head to watch his side profile, watch the way he kept his eyes on the entryway to the alley he had pulled you down before you even realised what was happening. You watched the way his cheeks flushed pink, probably from the nipping weather (though it was hard to care about that when he was like a furnace against you). You watched the way he looked so focused, so in his element.
It was hard to doubt Nico’s choice when you were seeing John do just what he did best.
“I think it’s all clear,” he eventually said, breaking the silence that had been lingering since he dragged you into the alley.
You swallowed harshly. “You sure?”
“Have I given you any reason to doubt I wouldn’t take your safety seriously?” John asked, turning his head so he was finally looking at you. You watched him closely, watched the way his eyes darted over your face and lingered on your lips for a moment too long before returning to your eyes.
“No,” you replied honestly.
“Then there’s your answer,” he murmured, lingering for a few moments before he took a step back. “Let’s go back to the house.”
You tried not to think about how cold you were the second he stepped away.
Things were starting to heat up with the Rangers deal.
Which, considering the faces of everyone in Nico’s study at that current moment, was incredibly fucking shocking.
“You’re actually going through with it?” Jesper was the one to speak first, staring at Nico with wide eyes. “I thought we were just entertaining them to see what they want.”
“Yes, and I listened and I agreed to it,” Nico said as he leaned back in his chair. “So we are going forth with the deal.”
“We have been fighting them for years,” Jack piped in, his brows furrowed together like he was trying to piece together a deal he didn’t even know the terms of fully. You weren’t even sure Nico knew the details of the deal yet.
“Exactly,” Nico nodded. “And look how much we have lost, both of us. It’s time to turn a new leaf.”
Jack flinched.
You pressed a hand between the blades of his shoulders, leaving it there until you could feel the boy slowly start to relax under your touch.
“This isn’t sustainable for either of us,” Nico continued, though it was softer this time. “We need to start thinking about what’s best for the Devils.”
“And buddying up with the Rangers is the solution?” Jonas asked, no judgement in his voice (yet). Just curiosity.
“Not just with them,” Nico admitted. “I want to start solidifying our relationships.”
And it was that exact reason that Nico decided to send you to Pittsburgh.
The members of the Steel City mob were not ones the Devils knew well, nor did they have much of a history with. It was good, in the sense that there was no awkward bad blood to get over (read: like the current Rangers deal Nico was trying to pull). But it also meant there was no reason for either group to want a relationship.
Not unless you were Nico Hischier and Sidney Crosby, suddenly interested in creating an alliance that would somehow benefit both groups involved.
It was weird travelling with John. Usually when Nico sent you on missions like this, you were alone. On the off chance you needed back up, it would be Timo or Dawson or Jack by your side. It should have felt unsettling to have John, but it was comforting.
It was comforting to know he had your back, that you didn’t have to spend the whole trip looking over your shoulder.
And it was better than when one of the others were with you. John let you take control, let you do the talking, let you sit across from Sidney and say what you wanted without trying to cut in or take over the conversation.
It was comforting but also such a mindfuck to know this was all from the same boy who practically avoided you until a few weeks ago.
Where was this John before?
All in all, the meeting went well. There was still a lot to discuss, to negotiate, to consider. But it was the start to an alliance between the Devils and the Penguins, a welcome and positive start. And that was more than enough for an overnight trip. Sidney had even been kind enough to offer a place in one of the countless establishments owned by the Penguins.
“Two rooms?” He said like it was a nicety, rather than a fact he already knew.
“One,” John corrected, his face remaining blank as he spoke. But there was a hint of ‘no further argument’ in his voice.
Sidney’s lips twitched upwards. “One it is, then.”
The hotel room was nice. More than nice, if you were being completely honest.
It felt far too fancy for a single night’s stay but you assumed the Penguins were wanting to keep the good relationship going, to show they were serious, to show how well they could treat those they shared a good alliance with. It felt more like a studio apartment than a hotel room.
And despite it all, there was only one bed.
It had taken around thirty minutes of arguing before John accepted that the bed was large enough for you both to share for the night. He had been insistent he could use the couch by the window, that it was big and comfy enough for him.
It made you want to scream.
You didn’t get it. You really didn’t fucking get it.
If someone had asked you a few months ago, you would have bet your life on the fact that John didn’t like you. He was clearly quite quiet and reserved, preferring to keep to himself. You would have assumed the reasons he stayed away from you were just that—that you were too loud, too out there, too flashy.
And then he became your bodyguard. And there were these moments where you thought you were seeing a different John, a John that you could get along with. A John that would maybe even be able to handle how loud and out there and flashy you were.
Until moments like this, moments where it felt like he would rather be anywhere but beside you. Where it felt like he was here out of obligation because of Nico’s orders.
“Why do you hate me?”
It had been over an hour since the two of you turned the lights off and settled down for the night. If you were being honest, you assumed he had fallen asleep a while ago but it still hadn’t stopped you from blurting the question out into the dark room, to get it off your chest before you felt like you would explode.
You hadn’t expected to feel him tense up beside you. You hadn’t expected him to still be awake.
“What?”
You remained silent.
You could hear shuffling from his side of the bed. You wondered if he was turning to face you. You couldn’t bring yourself to look.
“Candy,” John said, his voice heavy with an emotion you couldn’t quite pinpoint. “What makes you think I hate you?”
“Because what else am I to think?” You asked, your voice barely above a whisper as you spoke. “You ignored me before this, before Nico told you to watch over me. You barely said three words to me in the years I have been here and—”
You cut yourself off. The silence remained for a few minutes and you wondered if he had genuinely fallen asleep in that time. You still couldn’t bring yourself to look.
“I don’t hate you,” John whispered. “I never did.”
You let out a shaky breath.
“You were just so…you,” John confessed. “It was intimidating. I guess I didn’t think I was interesting enough.”
You frowned. “What?”
“I never said my reason made sense,” John retorted and you couldn’t help but snort a little. “I promise that I never hated you, Candy. Nobody could hate you.”
You swallowed. “And I’m meant to believe that?”
“I would never lie to you,” John said confidently. “Never have and never will.”
“Okay,” you whispered as you reached your hand back. It took a few seconds of patting the space between you both before you found his hand and gave it a small squeeze. “I don’t hate you either.”
“That’s reassuring.”
“Goodnight, Johnny.”
“Goodnight, Candy.”
“We think we have found a link between the attacks.”
“We?”
“Apologies,” Nico corrected, letting out a sigh as Jesper glared at the side of his head. “Jesper thinks he has found a link.”
“It’s a guess,” Jesper admitted after a few moments as the lot of you surrounded the map that was currently sprawled out over the length of Nico’s desk. “But it’s better than nothing.”
“What makes you think they will even attack again?” Jonas questioned as he glanced between the circled locations with a frown.
“We don’t,” Nico answered.
“Well, we can assume they will try again considering none of the other attacks ended with what they wanted,” Jack spoke up, catching your eye as he sheepishly shrugged. “Sorry, Candy.”
Timo’s frown deepened.
“Each of these locations would fit their agenda,” Jesper said as he rapped his knuckles against the map before frowning. “If we have guessed their agenda correctly.”
“You will have,” you assured, squeezing the blond’s shoulder with a smile. “Good job, Bratter.”
“We are going to have these locations on a constant patrol for the next week,” Nico said, frowning down at the map like he was already organising the patrol schedule in his head (even though Jonas would be the one to have a printed and laminated version on the notice board in the foyer by that very evening). “We are due another attack soon, if these people are sticking to a schedule.”
“Dibs the club by the Italian place,” you spoke up, flashing Jack a grin where he let out an exaggerated groan. “Their garlic bread would be the perfect stakeout snack.”
Nico opened his mouth but Timo was already talking before he had the chance to say anything.
“What makes you think you’re a part of this?” Timo asked with a frown.
You raised your brows. “Maybe the fact I am in this room right now.”
“No,” Timo shook his head. “Absolutely not. You’re not getting involved in this.”
“Timo—”
“You are one of their targets,” Timo gritted out between clenched teeth. “It would be fucking stupid to put you on patrol. We may as well hand you over on a silver platter.”
“You’re being dramatic,” you said. “I’ll be with John—”
“No, I am being realistic,” Timo corrected. “You’re staying behind. End of discussion.”
You could feel your temper starting to rise, feeling that itch under your skin that was biting to fight back. “What? You suddenly don’t trust John?”
“No, I don’t trust you,” Timo retorted, the muscles in his jaw clenching. “You’re a liability, Candy.”
You froze for a moment before scoffing. “Wow. Wow.”
To his credit, Timo did look apologetic the second the words settled in the room. “Candy, I didn’t—”
“What? You didn’t mean it?” You let out a humourless laugh, shaking your head. “No, you meant it, Timo. You meant it just like you meant it in San Jose and look where that got us.”
A look of hurt flashed across your brother’s face. “That’s not fair—”
“Whatever,” you gritted out, stepping back when he tried to reach you and turning on your heel before anyone else had the chance to say anything. You turned and walked towards the door and kept walking, blood roaring in your ears and tears welling in your eyes with every step.
“Got room for one more?”
John didn’t wait for your response as he settled down on the spot beside you. He glanced around, letting out a hum of amusement as he took in the full brunt of your wardrobe. It had been its own room at one point, before you had taken it over and connected it to your bedroom. Now, it was full of rails and shelves bursting with clothes and shoes in so many colours that John was surprised his head didn’t hurt the second he walked in.
He leaned back against one of the set of drawers, laughing a little when he felt a couple of feathers brushing against the back of his neck. “Do you actually wear feather boas?”
Your lips twitched upwards. “I got them when Luke and Curtis bet fifty bucks that I didn’t have them ‘in my collection’.”
John smiled a little. “So you have them to help Luke in a bet?”
You shot him a look. “Don’t be silly, I was helping Curtis win the bet.”
John did laugh this time, a proper laugh that caught you by surprise. Not that he seemed put off by the way you were blatantly staring at him. Instead, he nudged his shoulder against yours and just smiled.
Your eyes fluttered shut as you leaned your head against his shoulder.
“Do you want to talk about it?” John asked in a soft voice.
“I just…” You trailed off, trying to find the words to describe everything racing on inside your head. “I was just so pissed off and he wasn’t listening to me and I…I knew it would hurt. I wanted it to hurt.” You paused. “Does that make me a bad person?”
“Maybe,” John whispered. “But I don’t think he was a great person at that moment either.”
“I know the San Jose stuff upsets him,” you whispered, pressing your cheek further into the fabric of his shirt until his cologne and the vague scent of fabric softener was the only thing you could focus on. “He regrets it every day. He regrets that he left me behind that day, that he thought I was too much of a liability to go away with him.”
John pressed his cheek against the top of your head. “What happened in San Jose wasn’t your fault or his. It was them. It was the Sharks and their twisted morals over there and—”
“I’m his sister and I almost died because of a decision he made,” you whispered, your voice cracking as you spoke. “He will always blame himself, even if no one else thinks it. Even if he is the reason I’m alive now and we got out of there.”
John didn’t say anything.
“Just like I will always blame myself for trusting them blindly,” you muttered, swallowing the words that felt like they were stuck in the back of your throat. “I forgot the basic rules of this life. I forgot then and I forgot when I was at Peter’s when the attack happened and—”
“Candy,” John murmured, his arm winding around your body and pulling you further into his side. “It wasn’t your fault.”
You pressed your face further into him, your tears beginning to soak the shirt he was wearing but he didn’t care.
“You’re a force to be reckoned with, Candy,” John continued, his lips pressed against the top of your head as he left a lingering kiss. “None of it was your fault.”
You stayed silent.
“And you’re not a bad person. You’re allowed to get angry and upset. You’re allowed to lash out.” John pressed another kiss to your forehead. “Your brother loves you and nothing will ever change that.”
John held you in his arms as the two of you sat on the floor of your wardrobe. He held you as you cried and cried until you couldn’t anymore. He held you until keeping your eyes open was too much. And then he carried you to bed, taking his spot in your room and letting the silence settle over the room until the next morning.
The apology from Timo didn’t really come in the form of words, maybe because you and your brother both knew that more than words were needed. It was at the next Devils Sunday dinner. He didn’t say anything as he placed a box on your plate (a box you recognised with the logo of Peter’s Bakery) and pressed a kiss to the top of your head.
“We will never let them win,” he murmured, the same words he whispered that fateful night in San Jose before the two of you escaped.
“Never,” you whispered back.
Timo just smiled, soft and genuine and just as forgiving as it was apologetic, before he settled down in his spot at the table.
He didn’t even say anything about John’s arm wrapped around the back of your chair for the duration of the whole dinner.
The days passed and still no attack came.
The deal with the Rangers was becoming more serious. Not that you doubted Nico’s word at all. It was just…rivalry against the Rangers was all you had known. You heard whispers about them when you were on the west coast. You saw the extent of their violence when you and Timo fled to New Jersey.
It was hard to imagine a life where that violence wasn’t instigated, wasn’t retaliated against, wasn’t sought out.
“It will work.”
You raised your brows, watching the way Nico was nodding to himself as he glanced over the papers in front of him. “Are you trying to convince me or yourself?”
Jack snorted. “More like Jesper. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea.”
“He doesn’t trust them,” Nico corrected.
“And, to be fair, they have given us no reason to trust them,” you added.
“Just as much as they should trust us,” John deadpanned, once again refusing to sit down as he stood left to your chair.
“They need it as much as we do,” Nico pointed out.
“What stock could they possibly need from us?” You questioned, watching the way the boy paused before clearing his throat. Your eyes narrowed at your boss, like it would be enough to see the thoughts whirling around in his head. “Nico, what did you agree to?”
Nico let out a sigh, leaning back in his chair. “A marriage.”
Jack blinked.
“A marriage?” You repeated, hissing. “Are you crazy? You want to join us to them forever like that?”
“It’s an alliance, Candy,” Nico stated simply. “The idea is that it would be long lasting.”
“But a marriage, Nico,” you shook your head. “They wouldn’t just accept a random marriage, not unless Trouba thought he could find a way to get into the top circle. Who did you offer up?”
“Why? You offering yourself?” Jack asked, his lips twitching upwards.
But the joke fell flat when John stepped forward, stepped closer to you. “No. She’s not.”
Your eyes widened a little at the biting tone in his voice. “Hey—”
“You are not marrying any of them,” John gritted out through clenched teeth. “I refuse.”
“You refuse?” You repeated, your head tilting as you turned to look at the boy in disbelief. “Pretty sure it’s my decision, Johnny.”
“Yeah, Johnny,” Jack said, his eyes glittering in amusement. Not that you could see it, with your focus now turned to the other boy. But John could see it. He could see it and could see the way Jack was actively holding back his laughter. “If Candy wants to marry one of Trouba’s men, then who are we to stop her?”
John’s jaw clenched, an emotion you couldn’t quite read shining in his eyes. “No.”
Nico sighed deeply.
Jack snorted. “You’re not even being subtle about it, bud.”
You whirled around. “Subtle about what?”
Jack simply lifted his hands in mock surrender.
You turned back to look at John, a mix of emotions flooding through you when he failed to meet your eyes. “I thought you never lied to me.”
“I’m not lying,” John said, his eyes locked on Jack, who was beaming in response.
“No, he’s just omitting to tell the truth,” Jack retorted.
“Jack,” Nico said in a warning voice.
“Oh, come on,” Jack whined, turning to pout at the older boy. “We all know John is just—”
“Enough,” Nico interrupted, shaking his head. “Go to Peter’s.”
Jack frowned. “What?”
“I’m telling you right now to go stake out at Peter’s tonight,” Nico said—or, more accurately, commanded. “I want you to stick to the post for the rest of the night.”
Jack opened his mouth to argue but noted the glare Nico was sending him and—smartly—decided to keep his mouth shut. He glanced between you and John, muttering something under his breath before he jumped off his spot on the desk and made his way towards the door.
“And just to be clear,” Nico spoke up before Jack could leave the room. “Candy is not the one marrying a Ranger. None of you are.”
John’s brows furrowed together. “So who is?”
“Me.”
You hadn’t said a word to John since the two of you left Nico’s study.
It was one thing to make a deal with the Rangers. It was another for that deal to include an arranged marriage, something that seemed so archaic and old-fashioned for Nico’s taste. But for Nico himself to be involved? To tie himself to the Rangers in such a way?
It was fucking mind-blowing.
You could only imagine the kind of girl the Rangers would offer to play the part of Nico Hischier’s wife.
But despite the revelation, your mind was reeling for a very different reason. And said reason happened to be just behind you, dressed in all black (no surprise there) and looking like a damn kicked puppy at the silent treatment you had been giving him.
John watched you with careful eyes as you swung the door to your bedroom open, barely acknowledging the small ‘ooft’ he let out when the rebound of the door almost hit him in the face.
“Candy–” John started the second the door clicked shut behind him.
But you barely gave him the chance to continue, already spinning around on your heel to glare at him. “Do not even try it.”
“I meant what I said when I told you I would never lie to you,” John said, staying rooted in his spot even though his stomach twisted at the hurt written across your face. “I have never lied to you. I swear on my life.”
You watched him for a few moments, a muscle in your jaw ticking before you asked him something that completely caught him off guard.
“Why did you take this job?”
John blinked. “What?”
“Why did you take this job?” You repeated, keeping your eyes locked on him as you took a step closer.
“You know why,” John said, swallowing harshly. “You were a target and Nico appointed me as your bodyguard—”
“That’s not the only reason,” you said bluntly. “There is more to it. You know it. Jack knows it. Hell, everyone but me seems to know it. So what is the reason?”
John let out a breath. “I can’t tell you.”
You took another step towards him, eyes narrowed in determination. “Can’t or won’t?”
John could feel his chest tightening. “Candy, please.”
“You may not have been lying before but you weren’t telling me the truth,” you questioned, pausing when you were right in front of him. “Why did you take this job?”
John shook his head.
“John,” you rasped. “Tell me.”
He kept shaking his head. “I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because it will change nothing!” John frowned a little, clearing his throat as he lowered his voice. “Because I can’t do anything about it.”
You blinked, confused. “What?”
“Can we please just drop this?” John whispered, his voice cracking a little.
“No,” you shook your head, determined. “What won’t it change?”
John pressed his lips together.
You sighed. “Johnny—”
“Us,” John finally muttered out. “It won’t change us. It won’t change how I feel about you. It won’t change the fact that you’re you and you’re Timo’s sister and I shouldn’t want you but I really fucking do and—”
“Kiss me.”
John blinked, stuttering over his choked breath. “Candy, you don’t mean that.”
“Did I stutter?” You retorted.
“We can’t,” John tried again, but you could see his resolve crumbling. You could see the way his eyes dropped to your lips, the way they lingered on your mouth.
“Says who?” You asked, watching as the boy failed to find a response. “Kiss me, Johnny.”
John waited one, two, three seconds before he surged forward, before his hands cupped your face and his lips were pressed against yours with a passion you had never experienced before. You barely had a chance to grip his shirt before he was tugging you closer, before he was tilting his head and deepening the kiss and moaning against your lips like it was the hottest thing he had ever done in his life.
In some ways, it was.
Years of fantasies and feelings and thoughts and dreams lead to this moment. Years of John keeping his feelings hidden, keeping them locked away, thinking he never stood a chance. Years of him hopelessly pining and wanting and wishing. Years of just loving you just how you were.
His fingers entangled themselves in your hair, tilting your head to match his pace as his other hand slid down to wind around your waist and pull you closer. He heard the little gasp you let out, felt the way you fisted the fabric of his shirt, listened to the little breathless ‘Johnny’ you sighed against his lips.
He felt feral.
He hadn’t even noticed you slowly leading him deeper into the room, step by step, until your knees hit the back of the bed and you were dragging him down with you. Only then did the last few minutes seem to hit him like a freight train. He pushed up onto his elbows, chest heaving with soft pants and face flushed as he stared down at you.
“Candy—” He started but you quickly placed your finger over his lips..
“I want this. I want you. I don’t want to hear whatever noble bullshit you have been telling yourself to hold yourself back. I just want you, Johnny,” you said, breathing heavily as your eyes lingered on his kiss-swollen lips before returning to meet his gaze. “If you don’t want this, then I get that. But only if you don’t want this. Nothing to do with my brother or some bullshit sense of morality or the rest of this damn house.”
John swallowed, lifting one hand to slowly push some hair away from your face and tuck it behind your ear. You waited with a bated breath, watching as his eyes took in every single detail of you before he leaned down to kiss you—sweeter, softer than before.
“I want you more than you could ever know,” he whispered against your lips, his thumb brushing against your cheek as he spoke.
“Kiss me again,” you murmured, pushing your cheek further into his touch.
“Whatever you want, Candy,” John murmured before leaning down to kiss you again.
The attack happened three days later.
It was anticipated, just not on a warehouse you were expecting. The knowledge that the pattern you thought you had noticed was actually false laid heavy on all your shoulders, as the realisation of something much bigger than any of you were anticipating settled. This went beyond a few targeted attacks, this went beyond you.
This was the start of a war, and even if none of you wanted to say it out loud, you were all thinking it.
“What now?” Jack asked as you all stood around Nico’s study, staring helplessly at the map laid out on Nico’s desk.
“We prepare ourselves,” Nico said, his voice sounding heavy and tired. You didn’t even blame him. He had been keeping on a confident front, letting the others think that they had this all under control because he couldn’t spiral. He couldn’t let them all think there was a reason to panic. You could only imagine how much harder it was getting with each passing day, with each attack.
Jesper raised his brows. “So you’re breaking the deal with the Rangers?”
“No,” Nico shook his head, letting out a long sigh. It had been a recurring argument between the two of them for the last few weeks. “If this means what we think it means, it would be more beneficial to us to have the Rangers as allies.”
“Unless they are the ones behind it,” Jesper retorted.
“I’m going through with the deal and that’s final,” Nico said, raising his voice a little. It wasn’t a lot. But it was enough for everyone else in the room to fall silent. “And if you keep being pissy about it, I’ll make sure you sit next to Timo at the wedding.”
Jesper gaped. “You wouldn’t dare.”
Nico’s eyes glimmered. “But I would.”
“Woah, why is that a bad thing?” Timo scoffed, looking between the two of them with a frown. “I’m a fucking delight.”
Suddenly, everyone else looked away.
Timo’s frown deepened. “What? What is everyone not telling me?”
It was at that very moment Luke walked through the door, foil packet rustling loudly as he shoved his hand in it and kicked the door closed behind him. He paused when he noted the tension in the room, glancing between everyone with pinched eyebrows.
“Damn, I didn’t know getting snacks for a team meeting was illegal.”
“Rusty!” Timo whirled around, his eyes gleaming. “Did they tell you too?”
“Tell me what?” Luke questioned before his eyes widened. “Oh shit, they told you John finally grew a pair and made a move on Candy? Huh, you’re much calmer than I—”
“JOHN DID WHAT?!”
Luke paused, his lips parting in realisation. “Oh. Whoops.”
Timo whirled around to look at you and then John, seeming to finally notice the arm the boy had wrapped around your waist. He gasped loudly, shaking his head as he placed a hand on his chest.
“And you all fucking knew? Oh god, the betrayal! It hurts! It physically hurts!”
“I am not sitting beside that at the wedding,” Jesper said, shaking his head. “Look how dramatic he is being!”
“He will mellow out by the wedding,” Nico responded, looking far too amused by the theatrics playing out in the middle of his study.
“It’s Timo. When the fuck as he ever mellowed out?” Jesper retorted with a scoff.
You turned to find John watching your older brother with a pinched expression. It would have made you snort if you couldn’t feel the way he was gripping your hips, like he was ready to put you between him and your dramatic brother.
“Welcome to the family, Johnny.”
John’s nose scrunched. “I take it all back.”
You snorted. “Too late. No returns. You’re stuck with me.”
“It’s not you I want to return,” John retorted, pulling you closer to him. “I’d do it all over again if I could be stuck with you for the rest of my life.”
“Sap,” you grinned, looking far too pleased with his admission. “Even if you have to take on my brother?”
John’s eyes softened as he turned to look at you. “Nothing could scare me away from you, baby. Nothing.”
You beamed. “Good, because you have about thirty seconds before Timo realises he has free will and a gun in his left holster.”
There was a lot that was uncertain about the future, but you were pretty damn confident that John Marino was not one of them.

Okay, I’ve answered most of these in other posts already, but I’ll go ahead and answer the ones I haven’t. (I’m not sure if this is the usual way to do this, but I doubt anyone’s gonna send me asks and I want to answer the questions anyway.) 1. N/A - no other fictional character brings me nearly as much joy, comfort, or lust as Tomonori of Scarlet Fate
2. Well, when I was a kid, I had a major crush on Farid from Inkheart, if that counts. I haven’t read those books in ages, so he is no longer a blorbo for me, and considering he’s a kid, I don’t know if he would still be if I reread those books. I feel like I might sympathize more with the author, or maybe even get a crush on— what was his name, Dustfinger?— the grown-up thief. …Anyway, due to that combined with the portrayal of certain characters in The Thief Lord, I blame Cornelia Funke for my lifelong obsession with rogues.
3. see my post about the moment of blorbo-ization
4. I have to pick just one? Oh, man. Okay, as impressive and sexy as Tomonori’s composure in the face of various threats is, from a snarling beefy monk to various gods/demons who want to end the world, my favorite thing about him has to be the world-altering potential of his unspoken but deeply passionate love for Shiki. This man was equally willing to cause the apocalypse or save the world for her. That is a choice he canonically laid at her feet. I’ve seen “I’ll end the world in your name / out of love for you” a few times before, and I’ve seen “I’ll save the world for you / because you’re in it” a few times, but this might be the first and only time I’ve seen a character who’s absolutely willing to do either. Who puts his personal opinion of whether the world should continue or end secondary to the opinion of the person he loves, even when he has the power to do either, and gives her that choice instead. That might be the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen a character do in fiction.
5. Do I dislike anything about him? Other than things the writers didn’t fully explain, like whoever decided the role he should play in Gentoka’s route, no. It’s not that I think he’s flawless, but his pettiness and stubbornness and (only sometimes necessary) secretive tendencies and all of that are endearing to me.
6. Uh, I don’t know. The writer in me would be dying to show him my fanfiction and ask, “How would you act if you were in this situation?” or “Is this something you think you would say? How would you change it?” about a million places in the work, but as a person I think that might make him uncomfortable, especially if it came out of nowhere. I do “talk to him” a lot in my journals, and my version of him answers back. We’ve had whole conversations. He can’t seem to stop calling me “Shiki” though; it feels incredibly awkward to have him use my real name for some reason.
7. There’s a fandom other than me? Like, a fandom with collective opinions and stuff? I had no idea.
8. Introvert who’s learned how to read people and interact with them in formal contexts out of necessity. He’ll paste on a smile and say all the right things in public, but if given the choice he’d rather be at home reading.
9. calm, devious, romantic
10. If he’s trying to protect me, yes, absolutely. If that’s not a guarantee and Shiki and Akifusa also exist in this world (mostly Shiki, he’s not quite as protective of Akifusa, who to be fair doesn’t need it from physical threats as much), then I’ll trust him to protect me as long as it doesn’t interfere with their lives or safety.
11. Yup. So many fanfics. Still writing them, in fact.
12. Yeah, my mom, dad, and stepdad all know about him and the extent of my obsession with him. I’d probably gush about him to my brothers more if they were home more often or showed even a trace of interest.
13. Anything I could feasibly see him doing? No. But then I guess if he committed an act that would severely change my opinion of him, he wouldn’t be the same character, would he? So maybe that’s the whole point of the question. …Uh, sorry for clarifying all that. I guess if he raped someone, that would change things.
14. Again: there’s a fandom? Never had that problem. But even if I did, I don’t think I would distance myself from the character, just from the other people. Or if I’d grown close with them, I’d just ask them to stop talking about the character with me, and I’d do the same with them. We’re allowed to have different opinions, but I shouldn’t have to hear them dissing my favorite character if I don’t want to, and I’d hope they would respect that as my friends.
15. Big fandom problems, not mine.
16. Define “canonically”.
17. Hell no. Look, not all writers are sadists who want to see characters suffer. When I do make him suffer, it’s because the story compels me to, or else there wouldn’t be interesting conflict for him (and usually Shiki and/or Akifusa as well) to eventually overcome.
18. Yes. With Shiki and Akifusa, as is doubtless abundantly clear by this point.
19. Short, smartass, scheming, morally complex men who are passionately in love with one woman for the vast majority of their lives. (Or man; I wouldn’t mind reading a gay version of this, I just haven’t found one yet.) Alternate type: thieves, rogues, bandits, cutpurses, pickpockets, footpads, maybe assassins in extreme cases. If the two “types” are combined in one character, so much the better. Also, on a list of fictional characters I find attractive, 4 of the… 20-ish have red eyes, and two of those four are ostensibly human.
20. N/A. …Or, I guess, no. Depending on how one defines “blorbo”. I have favorite characters (and ships) from other works of media, characters and ships of whom I prefer to read fanfiction over fanfiction of any other characters or ships, but I don’t get excited about them the same way I do about Tomonori.
21. N/A
22. I don’t know. I want to say yes, but if he were real I’d feel uncomfortable writing fanfiction about him, since I don’t do RPF. And although I adored him as a character in canon, I think it was through the fanfiction I wrote after that I grew to love him and all his many facets on a deeper level. But I guess if he were real, he’d be dead since he lived in the Heian era, so maybe I wouldn’t have that problem. But I dunno, then I’d have to do even more historical research, and that’s just a pain in the ass. I’d probably still admire him, though.
23. He’s a victim of 1. Gentoka’s route; 2. not appearing in the CD Drama official art that showed the 5 “main” love interests shirtless but apparently Tomonori didn’t matter enough to the writers for that; 3. not getting a nice yukata in the summer festival stories despite the fact that fuckin’ Akifusa got one and from goddess lady’s perspective I would think Tomonori would seem more important and thus more deserving of one, but again, apparently the writers and/or artists didn’t care enough about Tomonori for that; 4. not getting any additional “autumn” stories; and 5. not getting a sequel story. …If anyone does happen to have information that the people in charge of Scarlet Fate released extra bonus stories and/or official art of him wearing anything other than that kimono (or the school uniform for the high school AU CD Drama, but that doesn’t count because it’s not canon and they did it wrong anyway, Shiki should obviously have been childhood friends with Akifusa and Tomonori too, not just some rando girl they instantly crushed on at first sight— leave that to the other love interests)— please let me know, and let me know where I can read or see it.
24. hmmm. I don’t want to change anything. But if I had to? Let’s make him even shorter. Like, 5’0” or something. Even shorter than Shiki.
25. I’m pretty sure they used him in the Scarlet Fate+ app to introduce the player to the game, but of course at that time I didn’t realize who he was. How did I first discover that app? I was playing a bunch of similar otome at the time— well, similar in the sense that you’d spend some version of stamina to read stories for free 5 times a day, or you could pay once to gain access to the full story. I think I gave up on Scarlet Fate+ because it’s really not the kind of story that’s ideally read in small fragments like that, but later I returned to the paid version, bought it, and thoroughly enjoyed Akifusa’s route. (After reading Gentoka’s, which was kinda meh— and I have the problem with it I mentioned above, although I didn’t have that problem at the time because Gentoka’s route is lacking in Tomonori lore so I didn’t have the full context— but helped me realize Shiki’s a badass, and I liked it enough that I wanted to read about other characters. …Anyway, I read Akifusa’s next because Akifusa made me laugh, and I’ve found that’s usually a good sign I’ll enjoy an otome character’s route. Often that character will end up being my favorite. In this case, I fell in love with his best friend instead. Sorry, Akifusa. Look on the bright side, you’re one of the characters I ship with him.) 26. Definitely not. This sounds terrible to admit now, but at the time I thought he was just a tutorial character who they only included because he had a pretty face. Even after you get to see little hints of his personality in the game, I still had no clue. I think the first premonition I had that he might be a more interesting character than I gave him credit for was how he dealt with the “trolley problem” in Akifusa’s route. Possibly.
27. Of course I want more people to know about him. It’s tiring having to explain who he is every time. I joked about making an informational PowerPoint once, but I might seriously consider doing that.
28. Yes. Not for any reason to do with Tomonori specifically, but I have been attacked online for the mere fact that he is a fictional character and I’m obsessing over him. I think I made a post about that too.
29. I’m the only creator of fanfics about him that I know. No, my own fanfiction has not made me cry. It has moved me emotionally on occasion, but not to the point of tears.
30. It’s been six years so far. What’s another three? Sure.

pro!hero dynamight is known for his explosive nature, fans second guessing if they should really approach the hothead. is it really surprising when you aren’t scared of him?
𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦 ᥫ᭡ 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗩 ᥫ᭡ 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧
katsuki hadn’t felt nervous before, in his entire life. if you would ask him what it feels like to be queasy, he wouldn’t be able to answer the question. but this afternoon? he felt his guts twist and turn, acrobatically.
why did he need the approval of a barely two year old boy? maybe because he was your two year old boy. katsuki wanted the boy to like him, he had to. he made sure to pick up a dynamight plushie for kenji and a fresh bouquet of flowers for you, eager to meet your baby boy.
he’d come across many kids, during patrol, or even during rescue missions, safely he could confirm, that he knew how to handle a kid, so what was he nervous about?
katsuki felt the sweat drip off his palms as he walked towards your door, he felt the hair at the back of his neck stand up, second guessing if he should knock or not. repping his knuckles rhythmically against the door twice, he stood pin straight, waiting for the door to crack open.
and on cue, the handle twisted. revealing you and kenji resting on your shoulder, taking a nap.
“he’s asleep” you mouthed, scared to wake up the dazed kid. katsuki smiled at the sight of your motherly and nurturing side, watching you pack kenjis backpack, ready to leave.
“you ready?” katsuki whispered hesitantly, making sure not to wake up kenji. you nodded as you grabbed your belongings. “leave your wallet behind”
“hey!! you said i could pay this time”
“don’t scream, you’re gonna wake up the baby”
you glared at katsuki, watching him smirk while he placed your wallet down. he grabbed your free hand and placed it in his, the action stunning you.
katsuki had kenji’s bag on his shoulder, while he held your hand, as you two walked to the car. opening the backseats door, to reveal a safety seat. you looked at katsuki, shocked. “what? we can’t have him buckled up without one, it’s a safety hazard.”
“you could’ve just asked me for-“
“i don’t wanna hear it shhh, you’re gonna wake him up” you giggled at the gentleness katsuki displayed with kenji, watching him buckle up your baby, making sure his head wasn’t drooping down “i don’t want his neck to hurt when he wakes up”
he closed the backseat door, once he was satisfied, and sure that kenji was safe in the backseat. opening the front door, for you. “such a gentleman” you giggled. katsuki grinned, as he clicked your seatbelt in, and made his way to the drivers seat. starting up his engine, making sure not to be too loud, incase he’d wake up the tiny sleeping figure in the backseat, with his thumb in his mouth. the kid was getting drool on the seat, but he couldn’t care less.
‘it hasn’t even been thirty minutes since i met this kid and he’s already got me wrapped around his finger’
the drive to the café was longer than usual, you two spoke about all sorts of things, making sure to catch up. of course you couldn’t explain kenji at the moment, he was in the backseat, drooling on the car that belongs to the man you have a slight crush on. deep in laughter, you heard babbles from the backseat, indicating your son had woken up from his deep slumber. katsuki peeked at kenji through the rearview mirror, finally taking in his features, deep green eyes, clearly he didn’t get that from you, and fluffy navy blue hair.
he didn’t inherit either from you, clearly. obviously taking after his father, however he did have your nose and eye shape, just a bit more round and upturned. he watched you grab, what seemed to be a rattle and hand it to the baby. watching him dangle it and giggle, causing the both of you to chuckle in the front seat.

Labyrinth ~ Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Vi x Reader
Premise: You, having grown up sheltered in Zaun, are taken in by Vander after the recent loss of your family - where you meet Vi. You fall hard and fast...until that fateful day when Vi leaves Powder. From childhood love to meeting again as adults, what will you and Vi become?
cw: 1.6K words | childhood crush!Vi, elements of girly girl!reader, teens now but will be adults in later chapters, no warnings for ch.1 <3
Lyric: "Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind" (Labyrinth, Taylor Swift)
Tumblr media
“Alright!” Vander’s voice booms as the door to his place in the Lanes swings open.
His voice barely causes alarm, the teenagers barely sparing a glance at him as he enters. They’re used to his style of announcement by now. Powder doesn’t pay him any attention, going back to fidgeting with her work-in-progress monkey bombs. Claggor and Mylo’s eyes briefly flicker to Vander, mid-conversation about whatever they’re planning today.
The only one whose attention is stolen is Vi, powder-blue eyes landing on Vander as she shifts on the old couch, leaning forward on her elbows with curiosity. “What?” She runs a hand through her short, pink hair. “Got a new job for us?”
“Not this time,” Vander sighs. “Uh, actually, we have a new person coming to stay with us.”
This catches everyone’s attention. Powder’s eyes widen in curiosity while Vi’s narrow with suspicion. Mylo is the first to speak, standing from where he had been joking around with Claggor. “What the hell?!” He protests. “We don’t need another person taking up our food supply!”
“Are they any good at jobs?” Claggor’s eyebrows furrow in thought. “Why are we taking them in?”
Vander just lets out another sigh, rubbing his temple at the onslaught of questions. He holds up a hand to silence them. “Can we pause all the questions?”
“Woah, hold on?” Vi’s voice cuts through, expression hard. “Who is this person?”
Vander pauses, hesitating before glancing back at the door and holding out a hand. A signal. Your signal.
You enter tentatively, gaze darting around at the dark house and, of course, the people in it. You glance at each of the teenagers, none of whom seem too happy about your presence. “Um, hi.” You say uncertainly, giving your name as a form of greeting.
Mylo’s face has only contorted into more frustration, while Claggor and Powder just glance at each other. Vi, meanwhile, looks more surprised than anything. Her eyes are still narrowed, suspicious of you, but there’s a tinge of something taken-aback.
Not that you can blame her. You don’t look like you’re from the Lanes, not really. You’re from another part of Zaun, if only a little better off financially. Your hair is cleaner, skin just a little brighter. Not resembling a Piltovan, though — more of a sheltered Zaunite. Your features are softer, wider, more uneasy in this new environment.
Vander places a firm hand on your shoulder from behind, giving each kid a hard look. “Yes,” he confirms, restating your name. “She’s here, and she’s staying. I don’t want to hear of anyone-”  he shoots a particularly stiff look at Mylo “-giving her a difficult time. Teach her the ropes, and I’ll see you all tomorrow morning. Are we clear?”
His words are met with nods from everyone, though hesitant, and Vander takes that as his cue to leave after squeezing your shoulder reassuringly.
You fidget in the tense air, wide eyes darting to the floor before back up at everyone. It’s Powder who finally speaks, moving toward you in nervous outreach. “It’s nice to meet you,” she half-smiles up at you. “I’m Powder.”
Gods, she’s cute. You can’t help but smile back down at her. “Hi Powder. I like your hair, it’s so pretty.”
Powder seems to rejoice at the compliment, her smile immediately brightening. “Thank you!” She exclaims, already seeming to ease up. She then turns, gesturing to Claggor and Mylo at the table and Vi sitting on the couch. “That’s Claggor and Mylo,” she points at each of them respectively. “And that’s my sister, Vi.”
At her name, Vi stands and approaches you, crossing from the couch to the doorway where you stand with Powder. “What’s your deal?” She questions, more curiosity written in her features than she’d like to admit.
“What do you mean?” You tilt your head, almost innocent, blinking up at her. Man, she’s tall. You wonder briefly if she’s much older than you.
Vi seems a little taken aback by your genuine innocence, but she persists with her questions. “Why are you here?” She lets her eyes drop down your figure, then back up again, lingering on the ribbons in your hair. “Staying with us.”
“Uh,” you hesitate, not having any idea of how to state this. “My family is gone.”
Dead silence.
Mylo and Claggor’s eyes have widened in surprise, clearly not expecting that blunt of an answer. Vi’s do, too, as she falters, unsure of what to possibly say in response to that. Powder’s yet again the one who breaks the silence. “I’m so sorry,” sorrow is etched on her features, and you feel your heart ache just a little.
“It’s okay,” you reassure her, disguising the tremble in your voice. You’re going through your own grieving, but right now, you can’t imagine this little girl worrying about anything in the world. Which, you suppose, is the opposite of the environment she’s been forced to grow up in. You drop down to her height. “Don’t worry about me. I’m here now, and-” you cast a glance at Mylo. “I’ll try to help you all as much as I can.”
“I like you,” Powder decides out loud, unable to help smiling back at you. Your soft eyes aren’t something she’s used to.
They’re not something Vi’s used to either.
Because gods, Vi has never quite seen anyone like you. Pretty, kind, soft. How are you from Zaun? She has to wonder to herself. She isn’t one to trust easily, having lost most people she loves at only fifteen now. But the way her younger sister looks at you like you’re hanging the moon right in front of her eyes — well, Vi’s more than a little intrigued.
“I’m sorry,” Vi clears her throat, and you meet her eyes as you straighten back up. “We have, um, similar stories if it helps at all. We’ll teach you the ropes, like Vander said, yeah?”
You bob your head once. “Yes.”
“Okay,” Vi exhales, gesturing to the bag on your back. “C’mon, I can show you the house.” You nod again, quickly taking the chance of acceptance into their little family. You can’t help turning to give a little wave to Powder as you exit the cramped front room, to which she beams at. Cute.
Vi leads you up some rickety stairs, gesturing almost lazily to a small bathroom as well as a room that appears to be Mylo’s and Claggor’s, before opening a door to another small bedroom. “This is where you’ll stay with Powder and I.”  She clarifies, facing you again while running a hand through her hair. “The bed on the left is mine and Powder’s. I think Vander set up the mattress on the right for you.”
You nod once again, setting your bag down at the end of your mattress. “Right,” your gaze locks with hers once again. “Thank you. For showing me and for, you know, letting me stay.”
The barest of smiles inches up on Vi’s lips. “No problem,” she waves you off. “It’s not much, but uh,” her eyes drop up and down your figure once again, and the three words she had briefly thought of earlier seem to cement themselves in her mind. Pretty, kind, soft. “I guess I’ll just…” Vi backs out of the room, her tone turning almost awkward. “Let you get settled.”
“Right,” you blink. “Thank you again.”
This time, Vi can't help an actual half-smile. “Powder and I will be in later. Good night.”
“Good night, Vi.”
|------» ~~~ «------|
It’s only when Vi enters the front room of the house again, plopping herself back down on the couch with a huff, that Mylo starts. “You were easy on her,” he accuses. “Why? You’re only ever that nice to Powder, and that’s cause she’s young.” Powder flashes him a scowl, but he doesn’t pay her any mind. “You going soft on us, fearless leader?”
“No,” Vi joins Powder in shooting Mylo a deep glare. “She’s just…new, okay? I mean, look at her. She clearly has minimal experience. We need to teach her a thing or two.”
“Or twenty,” Claggor’s mumble can be heard across the room, to which Mylo gives Vi a pointed look.
“Fine, or twenty,” Vi rolls her eyes. “What’s it to you? Another pair of arms to grab more stuff during jobs. She’ll earn her own food when she learns the ropes.”
Meanwhile, Powder’s in her own little world, letting out a dreamy sigh. “She’s pretty. Do you think she’ll let me wear her ribbons?”
This constitutes a roll of both Mylo’s and Claggor’s eyes, but Vi grants her little sister a soft smile. “I’m sure she will. She is pretty,” she mumbles the last part under her breath.
Unfortunately for her, it’s a small room.
“Oh,” Mylo dons a smirk, eyebrows twitching in smugness. “You like-”
“No!” Vi shoots back, her softness immediately replaced by another glare. “I just mean — you guys saw how nice she looks. And how sweet she is with Powder,” she gestures to the blue-haired girl sitting on the floor. “She’s not a fighter. She’s different, different from me.”
Powder smiles at the thought. “Yeah, she’s nice too,” she concedes, but she still manages to sneak a teasing glance at Vi. “That’s why you’re in loooove~”
Vi buries her face in her hands and groans, unable to escape this interrogation. Claggor reaches over to high-five Powder, which she happily accepts. Meanwhile, Mylo isn’t quite done. “You mean, she’s like a little princess, and you like that. As close to a princess as anyone from Zaun can be.”
Vi turns her entire body to face Mylo, completely fed up. “What did I say about this look on my face?” She deadpans, pointing to her expression. “Now, shut up unless you want the last pick of chores.”
Though, despite all her crowing, when Vi puts Powder to sleep that night, she can’t help a glance over at your peacefully sleeping form. And she needs to know: who, exactly, are you?

Forever Ain’t Long Enough
Paring: Glen Powell x Rockstar!Reader
Summary: Glen Powell and his rockstar love have been together for a decade, ever since they met on Scream Queens. Their relationship, once a well-kept Hollywood secret, is now making headlines—especially after their red carpet appearance at the Twisters premiere, where a certain ring was spotted. Now, sitting down for an exclusive interview ahead of her highly anticipated country comeback album, she finally confirms the rumors: not only did Glen propose, but they’re already married.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The camera flashes are still burned into her retinas. Last night, when they stepped onto the Twisters red carpet, she swore she heard the collective gasp from the press the second they noticed the ring. A decade together and somehow, they’d managed to keep this part a secret—until now.
“Alright,” the interviewer, a seasoned journalist with a warm smile, leans in with an air of intrigue. “Let’s start with the question on everyone’s mind. The Twisters premiere. The ring. Glen Powell finally putting a ring on the rockstar he’s been crushing on for ten years. Is it true?”
She laughs, shaking her head at the dramatics. “Oh, it’s true,” she admits, holding up her hand so the camera gets a good look at the diamond. “But we kinda forgot to tell people that we’ve actually been married for months.”
The interviewer’s jaw drops. “Wait—married? Glen Powell and his longtime rockstar girlfriend-turned-fiancée-turned-wife?”
She grins, nodding. “Yep.”
“Okay, hold on. You mean to tell me Glen Powell—Hollywood’s golden boy, America’s sweetheart—has been secretly married to you, country music’s newly returned queen, for how long?”
“Six months,” she confirms, sitting back against the leather chair. “We had a quiet ceremony on our ranch in Austin. Just family, some close friends, nothing crazy. I think after ten years together, we didn’t feel like we needed a spectacle. We just wanted us.”
The interviewer shakes her head in disbelief. “I need to process this. I feel like I’ve been lied to.”
She laughs again, running a hand through her hair. “I mean, we never lied. We just… didn’t correct anyone.”
“Unbelievable,” the interviewer mutters, then refocuses. “So, tell me—how did Glen propose? Because if this was under wraps, I’m guessing it wasn’t a public, get-down-on-one-knee-at-the-Oscars kind of thing.”
“Not even close,” she says, her smile softening. “It was at home, on the ranch. We were sitting on the porch, watching the sun go down, and he just—he pulled out the ring and said, ‘Ten years is a long time to wait, but forever still doesn’t feel like enough.’ And that was it. Simple. Perfect. Him.”
The interviewer sighs dramatically. “Well, that’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard.”
“It really was,” she agrees, her fingers absentmindedly twisting her wedding ring. “And I know people always say ‘when you know, you know,’ but Glen—he’s always been it for me. Since day one. I think we both knew it, even when we were just kids messing around on Scream Queens.”
“So, does this mean the new album is about him?”
“Oh, yeah,” she confirms. “He’s all over this record. Every song, every lyric. It’s about the life we built together, the love we’ve grown into. It’s my love letter to him, to us, to Austin, to home. Making this album felt like coming back to myself.”
The interviewer sighs wistfully. “A secret wedding, a country comeback, and a husband who’s been in love with you since the minute he met you. You’re living the dream, girl.”
She grins, looking down at her ring before meeting the camera with a twinkle in her eye. “Yeah,” she agrees. “I really am.”

Yeah, all my Primarch wives are tiny in comparison with their men too. Corvus at least is very careful with Sol, due to her illness making her weaker, Magnus can adjust his size to more comfy size difference with Nef, and yet she prefers him bigger *eyebrow wiggle*, while Rogal is Rogal, and Kaira has to climb him and get creative. She fights tough fights all her life after all...
Tbh nothing makes me laugh more than drawing human partners with Primarchs. Just the sheer size difference is hilarious, not really even talking about how uncomfortable any physical interactions especially sex would be.
#Reblog#it didn't help that Alessia was born 11 pounds due to it#and her poor mother came out of labor with a broken pelvis because of it#lion is sweating bullets as aelia stares daggers at him#aeris is 6'2 but still tiny compared to guilliman#doesn't stop her trying to peg him tho#guilliman doesn't let her lmao#nadezhda is 6 feet but rogal is extra careful#rhaena's 5'11 but after becoming a Daemon Princess her height kinda fluctuates in the warp??#doesn't matter she and fulgrim become hedonistic fucks#All of this tho and those poor women#Medea was slightly to larger side so nef had troubling pregnancy though because she is pretty short she looked like a barrel and hated it#Nef even hates her body post birth tho magnus loves those curves#Even if nefrit's pregnancy was troublesome she still loves medea. Nef just needed more time to adjust to whole mom thing#Sol on other hand got advantages from her pregnancy#Cornix was small baby even by human standarts so small in fact she fit in one of corvus' hands#Also baby's Primarch regeneration genes actually helped to regenerate some of decaying sol's organs so he condition slightly improved even#Birth left her very drained and weak#Still if health allowed sol would have popped more babies from corvus considering he was quick learner and made it comfortable for his love#Kaira however had worst case scenario: rein was huge baby and for quite some time it seemed keira was pregnant with twins until it was clea#It's just one big kid. Poor woman looked like 9 months pregnant at 6 months so once she hit 7 month and it got really dangerous that baby#Will crush her organs she was made to forcibly enter labour which again was hard just because how big rein was#Eventually c-sec was performed and both baby and mother survived but rogal felt extremely guilty for all the suffering he put his wife thru#I mean reinard is around 12 ft as adult so no doubt he has hard pregnancy#*was

Whitebeard is going to be so pissed when he finds out for the past 20ish years GARP was his grandbabies’ only grandparent. (Pissed at Garp + the situation. Croccy is forever his precious little pr– *pebble* and he still hasn’t even really begun to wrap his mind around the idea that Croc’s been so distant *because* of the smothering)
Like “Garp is in danger pissed”
But on the other hand, baby Luffy wouldve been like an *ant* to Whitebeard. He’d have had to use WB sized tweezers to feed the kid
That mental image...
Do you think the only reason Crocodile was distant was because of the smothering? Not the crushing defeat at Whitebeard's hands? *lol* (But those two things can be linked I suppose!)
It's not Garp's fault that Whitebeard is a horrible father and Crocodile didn't want to see him!! (Most likely Garp's statement on the issue.)

you're so right about harlivy and can i be honest? the way the riddler story made him a shy virgin who doesn't know what flirting is was so boring too? it felt weirdly infantilizing to me (not being a virgin per se, ofc, but the way it was written) and like it also tried to erase the character's edges (no care for personal boundaries, too forward, the whole canon masochist fequenter of bdsm clubs thing) just like the harlivy story in favor of doing the played out awkward virgin nerd thing? also no 'canon' bisexuality acknowledgement but that was expected
the way that the story was going I genuinely thought they were building up to Eddie having a very special episode moment where he learns about demisexuality or being aroace or something, but it wasn't even that? he just annoys two women (couldn't even pull off a rule of three???) and then goes "oh well! at least I have my true love, Gotham City!"
which is like. okay. historically the Riddler's exact motivations and personality fluctuate as much as any other character, sure, but he's generally not in the game for a love of Gotham??? like he does this because he wants attention and money and to feel like smartest specialist little boy. if he's juvenile it's generally in the way he's self-centered and overconfident and prone to tantrums when he doesn't get his way, not because he's a sixth grader who's just learning that the other kids have crushes for the first time.
and like you alluded to, yeah, there are MULTIPLE iterations of the Riddler where he has clear Issues With Women not in the "uwu Eddie can't talk to girls because he's shy and awkward" way but in the "Eddie can't talk to girls because he's a fucking creep" way. particularly in recent years, several writers have been a very deliberate choice to give him traits lifted straight from pickup artist and incel circles to emphasize the their take on the character sucks in a way that's inseparable from misogyny.
which isn't to say every Riddler is on reddit crytyping about looksmaxing, of course, but those ones are certainly indicative of a persistent trend.
a couple of people had sent me asks about this story to ask if I'd read it, known Riddler enjoyer that I am, and included a quick description. I replied to one and said, mostly as a joke, that this is blowback from DC editorial against a valentine's story by Ram V published a few years ago, in which Eddie sends Batman on a valentine's-themed chase that introduced Batman to several of Eddie's past crushes and romances—including a male friend from college, which is presented as being as straightforward and unsurprising as any of the others. the story ends how you think it does: Batman lured to a romantic rooftop dinner with the Riddler, who complains about being unable to approach an attractive woman but is still very much on a date with Batman after casually peppering in that he's bisexual. I don't this there's ACTUALLY any kind of editorial mandate to quash the notion that the Riddler has a messy romantic history and maybe fucks guys sometimes, but man. how far we've fallen in just a few years.

young caitlyn headcanons
—⟢ 20 Cait’s childhood headcanons: habits, hobbies and little details I love. Some of them are long, others quite short. Enjoy!
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’s quite good at chess and puzzles.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She sucks at lying. When she “has” to, she simply falls silent or avoid eye contact.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She collects dried flowers to be bookmarks.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’s had the same haircut ever since her hair first reached her shoulders. One night in middle school, she decided to try something new and cut herself some bangs—but they turned out uneven. So she just clipped them to the side and waited for them to grow back.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She plays piano since she was six. She has many trophies and most of them are on display in the hallways.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’s had all kinds of pets—dogs, cockatiels, turtles, bunnies—but she got along best with dogs, especially trained Dobermans. The smaller ones kept getting lost in the mansion.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 Cait never went through a denial phase about her sexuality. She was never interested in boys or curious about them like her friends were. When she realized she liked girls, she immediately knew she didn’t like boys at all.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 Caitlyn is a black belt in Taekwondo and Jiu-Jitsu. Medals and photos of her victories are also displayed in the hallways of the house. She doesn’t look at them very often.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’s very shy. She interacts with only a few people: her parents, Grayson, Jayce, and one or two friends from school.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She writes a lot about everything. She goes through dozens and dozens of notebooks each year, using them for different purposes—documenting her daily life, jotting down her thoughts, and even writing poetry or adventure novels. She keeps them all in a box under her bed, each one labeled with the year and how long it was used.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 Cait loves music, specially the ones she can visualize herself playing on piano. She picked up the habit of tapping her fingers on any surface, mimicking piano keys.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’d dress like Tobias instead of Cassandra. They all have the same palette, but she’d much rather wear pants and shorts like her dad. Cass reluctantly got used to it.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’s stubborn, very stubborn. She’d argue with her mother about what she believes it’s right or wrong, and she’d stuck to her principles—the ones she built herself—even if she loses the argument to a very eloquent and firm Cassandra.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 Her first rifle was a birthday gift from Grayson when she turned nine.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’s an only child and the jealous type. She’d get possessive over her toys and her parents’ attention. As a kid, she would narrow her eyes at any man who spoke to her mother or any woman who spoke to her father.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She used her school projects as an excuse to spend more time at Jayce’s place, helping him with his research.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 Mel did her makeup for her first school ball.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She’s obsessed with Batman but she always had a crush on cat woman.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 Her first kiss was with a (girl) friend. It was actually a peck and she blushed so hard she couldn’t keep eye contact for a while.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔 She brings stray cats to the house and even tho most of them run away again, some of them come back to her window.
