Lightfall is my current favorite kids / tween graphic novel series. If you've never read one of these, go read book one, The Girl & The Galdurian. Everything about it is beautiful, and it makes me wish my now-adult daughter still let me read to her. It's a fantasy adventure about two friends, Bea and Cad, trying to stop a giant bird from destroying all of the lights (think mini-suns) of their world. Bea's cat, Nimm, accompanies them on their quest, plus others are often around, too. Caution: spoilers ahead.
Lightfall Book 2: Shadow of the Bird by Tim Probert. Harper Alley, 2022. 9780062990488. 256pp.
After getting a note from Bea's gramps and learning more about both the Restless Sleeper (Kest, that giant bird) and Irpa (their planet), Bea and Cad set off to either stop Kest or find another of the ancient beings that created Irpa or maybe both. It's high stakes with shadow creatures, mass evacuations, and giant lights falling from the sky. Not to worry, though; Bea is super brave, and Cad has a huge sword, plus their friends help out. (And the ending is my favorite kind, dark enough for me to love it but not without hope.)
Lightfall Book 3: The Dark Times by Tim Probert. Harper Alley, 2024. 9780063080904. 256pp.
I thought this might be the final volume in the series but good news, it's not!
In a last-ditch effort to save their planet, Bea and Cad head for The Citadel of Knowledge. That's right, a library! I assume you don't need to know more to get you to read this. But if I was pitching this to my daughter, I'd also tell her there's a giant bat-like being at the heart of the story in this volume. (They love bats.)

Righty, Graphic novel reccomendations:
Snapdragon by Kat Leyh (about witches, ghosts, bones, ect. One of the title ideas was 'the roadkill witch' and that sums it up pretty well)
Mamo by Sas Milledge (about hedge witches, curses, a lil bit of generational trauma, and a dope magic system. The art is gorgeous, its probably my top reccomendation for anything ever)
Lightfall by Tim Probert (a fantasy world where the sun is gone and the world is kept bright by floating lights. It has an amazng way of portraying anxiety and panic attacks in its main character)
Diesel: Ignition by Tyson Hesse (a steampunky thing with flying ships about found family with undertones of war, and societal divide)
This Was Our Pact by Ryan Andrews (about two boys on a cycle ride at night who experience all sorts impossible things)
Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan (sci fi and supernatural stuff in a suburban neighbourhood focusing around four papergirls in 1988)
Lumberjanes by alot of people actually (an all girls summer camp with all sorts of cryptids, greek gods, supernatural beings, curses, and magic stuff in the achres of forest surrounding it)
Nimona by ND Stevenson (most people know the recent movie but the graphic novel is really good too, with alot of angsty stuff and also found family moments :D)
The Backstagers by also alot of people (the backstage areas of a high school theatre filled with all sorts of cryptid and magic nonsense, also good queer and trans characters)
Galaxy, The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor (a giant metaphor for being trans about an alien girl stuck in a human boys body, with all sorts of relateable experiences and also the most gorgeous art ever in the world ever)
Bloom by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau (two guys working in the same bakery falling in love, with actually very real representation of how relationships may go)
Squire by Sara Alfageeh and Nadia Shammas (people training to be knights with gorgeous art and amazing colours)
Martian Ghost Centaur by Mat Heagerty and Steph Mided (a small town that used to be famous for sasquatch sightings being bought out by a big company, and the girl trying to stop it)
I own and have read all of these, enjoyed them immensely, and have brainrotted over them all for days, Enjoy! :]
And, importantly, share some recs!

Comics Review: ‘Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian’
Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian by Tim Probert My rating: 5 of 5 stars A forgetful porcine sorcerer goes missing. A three-toed, goggle-eyed explorer combs through forestland, over mountain peaks, and through sundered valleys in search of an extinct people. A human girl with paralyzing anxiety packs a rucksack full of honey rolls and gazes at the ever-bright sky overhead. In one tiny corner of the land of Irpa, curiosity is afoot and adventure is around every corner. LIGHTFALL: THE GIRL & THE GALDURIAN is a beautiful graphic novel. Extravagant and punctilious detail and vibrant color frame a simple but effective tale of loss, wonder, and fear, all from the perspective of an adolescent girl in a funky and fantastical realm. Beatrice's adoptive grandfather, a pig apothecary, leaves the village when he recalls an ancient promise that might have met an unsavory fate. The old porker is a tad forgetful, so it's hard to say whether this inciting incident is less valid than circumstances can warrant. Whatever the case, young Bea fears for her grandpa and sets off to find or help or save him. Problematically, Bea's not an adventurer. Which means she'll need the sword-swinging bravado of a kind-hearted stranger if she's going to survive. Of the numerous graphic novels on the market about children embarking through the strange and frightful with naught but the clothes on their back, LIGHTFALL: THE GIRL & THE GALDURIAN is exquisite. The supporting cast is a quirky and perfect fit: reptilian bandits, a packrat thief, a dinosaur barkeep, black-feathered bird assassins bearing heavy blades and dark intention. And in terms of the setting, Bea's journey through the land of Irpa is ripe: verdant, layered forests populated by mossy deer; underground waterfalls guarded by whispering, enchanted skulls; the interface of rocky mountainside and overgrown pasture, occupied by an immense, if lonely bone-carved statue of an ancient, nameless king. While the adventure Bea sets upon is generally confined to the realm of the ordinary, the theater in which she must surmount this ordinariness is delightful. Bea's quest to locate her wandering grandfather, while crucial to nudging the book into motion, is the least interesting part of the whole narrative. Bea's companion, Cadwallader, is the last of his people, and it behooves the two to figure out what happened to the kind, bulbous warrior race before too long (it appears the Galdurians' ancient nemesis has resurfaced). Similarly, as Bea leaves her home for an extended period, for the first time, she confronts the awkward and unusual history of the land of Irpa, relearning how the sun was lost, how artificial light now populates the continent, and how all of the strange and different species of intelligent creatures now call Irpa their home. LIGHTFALL: THE GIRL & THE GALDURIAN takes an enviable approach to storytelling: beginning with the lowest barrier of entry, then slowly and deliberately expanding the scope of adventure to include whatever pings the protagonist's curiosity. Sometimes this means diving into Bea's ardent struggle with her fragile mental health and sometimes this means partnering with Cad to field a new supply kit from a few roadside hucksters. All in all, the diversity of excitement and emotion is vast, and readers will enjoy the color, the noise, the newness, the unusualness, and the uncertainty native to navigating all of the dangerous spaces in-between.

Lightfall Book One: The Girl & The Galdurian by Tim Probert. HarperAlley, 2020. 9780062990464. 248pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9780062990464?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Beatrice, a human girl, lives with her gramps, Alfirid the Pig Wizard. He sends Bea out into the woods to look for ingredients for an elixir, and when she needs help she meets Cad, who is looking for her uncle. Cad is a Galdurian, one of the people who constructed the lights that illuminate their world after the sun was destroyed -- he's looking for his people, and he needs the help of the Pig Wizard to translate some papers.
But the forgetful Alfirid has left to take care of something important that he suddenly remembered, the Seal of the Restless Sleeper. Bea and Cad follow, which becomes the adventure that takes up the rest of the book (and leads into the next). The entire landscape is magical, with evidence of past civilizations. Their journey involves a rat thief, giant crabs, a cursed temple, hungry bandits, and a few great, cartoony fight scenes. (The "restless sleeper" probably has something to do with the sinister bird in the dark place, which we see in interstitial scenes that take place well away from Bea and Cad. Is that the bird that destroyed the sun?) And how important is Bea's jar, with its magical flame, going to prove to be in the end?
Probert's art is just wonderful and adds to this graphic novel's magic. This one is a clear readalike for Kibuishi's Amulet series (and a great diversion while we're all waiting for the last book).

Mid Year Freak Out Tag 2021
Copied from @bookcub
1. How many books have you read so far?
39 books + 4 novels beta'ed + 2 full rereads of my own WIPs
2. What genres have you read?
Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, Mystery, Thriller (all in prose and graphic novels, MG-Adult)
3. Best book you’ve read so far in 2021
The Call by Peadar Ó Guilín, City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab, The Girls I've Been by Tess Sharpe, and one of the books I beta'ed that I can't talk about yet because it doesn't have an agent nor has it sold yet but it's SO GOOD and full of witchy Appalachian magic and it's gay
4. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021
Predominately I've been starting new series as I wait for sequels, or reading standalones... but: Either Bridge of Souls by Victoria Schwab or The Worst of All Possible Worlds by Alex White
5. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
One Last Stop. I've been trying to get my hands on a physical copy but no one's had it in.
6. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
The Dead and the Dark by Courtney Gould
7. Biggest disappointment
Witches Steeped in Gold. I've tried twice to get into it, I'm stalled at like 120 pages in. I usually just DNF a book I'm not into, but I really thought I'd like this one.
8. Biggest surprise
Giant Days. I'm not always one for slice of life comics (my wife loves them) but I devoured the 3 volumes we have in one sitting.
9. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)
Tracey Deonn (I need the second Legendborn book stat), and Silvia Moreno-Garcia
10. Underrated gems
The Call by Peadar Ó Guilín. I don't know how this didn't hit bigger than it has. It's got creepy fae, good disability rep, queer rep, dystopia/hunger games esque survival. And the writing is so very good
11. Newest fictional crush
does my continued love of Harrow count?
12. Newest favorite character
I am so bad at favorites, I love so many characters.
13. Book that made you cry
nothing yet, but it's really hard to make me cry over a book (the last one that succeeded was Code Name Verity)
14. Book that made you happy
Lightfall by Tim Probert
15. Most beautiful book cover of a book you’ve read so far this year
Scapegracers by Hannah Abigail Clarke
16. How are you doing with your year’s goals?
1 behind! but, I moved 300 miles at the start of the month so I'll get back on track here soon.
17. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
Anything on my TBR. It's like 100 books long. I need to whittle it down, especially if people are going to keep writing really good books I need to read. But especially any book on my TBR that I already own. There's like 60 of those somehow (though a few of those are pre-orders)...
Tagging anyone who wants to do this

I always love getting inspired by a novel, and my second design reveal is just that! 🍂✨ ‘Quest In The Woods’ is inspired by ‘Lightfall’, a graphic novel by Tim Probert that follows the beautifully charming story of Bea and Cad — two unlikely heroes who set off on an adventure together. The story is just so pure, and the art is stuuuunning 🪵🌿🌞🌻✨ This sticker sheet will be available on November 1st, 9:00 pm (GMT+8)! ✨ (at Perth, Western Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVplu5Qvcdg/?utm_medium=tumblr
