Circa Solar - realign with the nature of time
For emerging practices we were encouraged to look at a technological kick starter of our choice and identify our personal positions, the practice of it within the creative arts and industries, Articulate propositions and highlight alternative and future directions of the said artefact within the said industry.
Circa Solar. On my initial encounter with Circa Solar, it looked like a fun approach to the concept of time. It sells itself as an alternative clock, based around “the nature of time”. I thought this was an interesting and certainly an aesthetically engaging concept. From a shallow perspective, the whole article on Kickstarter was well-curated, colour coordinated, flashy, clean and had a lot of information from the artefact itself to the philosophy behind it.
It was my pretentious side that grasped to this idea that “I don’t need numbers for the time, this is way cooler” or “This is more natural for my body rhythms” and other naive thoughts. And the more I read the more caught out I was about how clingy it was.
We depend on time telling for everything in our culture, it is the main structure of our society. We do everything based around time. The stance they were taking, however, was to change the view of time into the visual concept rather than numerical.
First, look
The contemporary aesthetic included a lot of cohesive colour work in a bright sunlight yellow, contrasting this with a black and grey accent. This theme was used on all imagery, from photography, design and film. It was obvious they wanted an overall impactful “look” for this product. It did make it look professional and well organised, though when I watched the video I was introduced to the concept with a robotic voice over. It was well informed and to the point and used big words to further drive the importance of their research behind the project. It was clearly a persuasive approach into convincing us that our current reading of time was potentially a “toxic delusion”.
Though I understood the language they were using, it was a language that would be considered more academic than marketable in my opinion. Their language usage was also concise but ultimately intimidating. It came across as existential and conceptual, rather than whimsical, which I think is a loss, they take themselves too seriously so me to take them seriously.
They believe this is the solution to the additive “short term thinking” that our current culture is subject to. Using sentences like “if you choose to support solar in this critical moment in time” and overall sense of urgency, the language indicates that their main goal is to enter a new chapter of telling time. I think though, to me, it sounded pretentious. The words and overall approach seemed like an overpromising application. It seemed like they were building up this huge influential project and it would change the world. I was just waiting for a “and much, much more” sentence.
They separated their explanation from its most simplistic approach to its most complex. I did feel this was effective and worked well for the average viewer, it allowed you to see as little or as much as you want. Chapters are as follows…
Circa Solar in a sentence
Circa Solar in a paragraph
Circa Solar prototype
Circa Solar in a Story
Nature of Time
Nature of being
Toxic Delusions
Radical Coexistence
Furthermore risks etc.
What don’t they say is that this will replace time altogether, but it does seem to have a negative look on the current way of telling time, where that be analog or digital, as far as I know, this is all numerical based rather than visual sundial style. I think there is. the reason why we as people in society graduated from the sundial approach to telling time, to a numerical approach. They also don’t seem to mention anything about sundials and how they were a mix of numerical and visual time telling value. They also seem to compare humans to plant life and the “natural” cycle of light. Funny enough, we aren’t plants, we are people. Time to me at this point is a necessary and essential part of society these days, and it is that way for a reason, which I plan to further investigate. Text, Labels Signs are extremely well curated, it looked like everything was perfectly made to empower their message. It also looks like everything is completely staged and based on theory, rather than practice. I would have loved to see someone use their form of time telling for a week. As I think the biggest concern for people would be being late to things. I know that would certainly concern me.
((photo))
They had a lot of visual features including, imagery, photography, gifs and video. This was mainly used to show their movement of time.
Things I would note on.
-Didn’t show a human interactive experience, even the voice over was obviously robotic.
-Going backwards not forwards to me
-seems to be more aesthetically based than practical
-would be cool if it was added to current time telling, with out the numbers it reminds of me of “island time” or “meet me at noon”. Doesn’t work in an urban sense and creates timeliness risk.
The artefact itself
The artefact itself looks like a typical watch or phone app. With a basic monochromatic shading. The hand of the clock still moves around the circle, however, the sunrise and sunset elements are emphasised with the dark to light shading. There are dots around the screen where the hand can point to, however, I think it is still confusing to read as you can’t tell exactly what time sunrise is. For example, 6 is normally where the 3 hands would be, they have changed around the structure of what area of the clock means what time.
The way it works is below.

https://www.creativeapplications.net/js/three-js/sun-suns-cycle-as-an-interactive-playful-experience/
To investigate their concept more I wanted to go back to how time telling came about, which I would assume is by the sun rise and sun set. This was further confirmed for me with a video A brief history of time (keeping). Stephan Hawking also has books on a briefer history of time, even briefer history of time. I did not have time to read his books, but this video seems to sum it up pretty well. For a lot of our lives in the early days, sun and seasons were all the time keeping we ever needed, however with the development of civilisation people needed schedules.
Egyptians made clocks using shadows and split the day into 12 hours depending on where the shadow lay, this can be referred to a sundial. This concept is increasingly similar to how this watch proposes to operate, using the “shadows” and visual representation of time. I can't help to think, is this not just going backwards? Or maybe that's the point? It’s not exactly a wildly new concept, but maybe it's new in regards to how we live now, and new in the way it reinterprets the past. For nighttime they would 12 of their favourite constellations rise. 12 because Egyptians preferred duodecimal numbers to match lunar or funny enough the number of joints we have on each hand. It took over 3000 years of “clock” making to get to where we are today with our digital and analog clocks.
This Artefact is taking on this idea that we could re connect with the natural light cycles again, removing a minute to minute living. Reading the article again I also understand that they are not trying to change the main form of time telling, more so showing an alternative to living with time. Their purpose is to draw us back to our roots of living. Though I can understand that this would be appealing either aesthetically, or used as a form of a relaxed way to tell time, I do not think it would be practicle as the only source of Time telling and not everyone can afford to be on “island time” sort of sounds like it was made by someone who was always late.
Conclusion todo
What is the argument behind the value proposition or the future scenario?

Light therapy lamps are bright lamps commonly used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression, and sleep disorders. The lamps are widely available, and you can use them at home: Simply turn on your light therapy lamp and sit near it for a set period of time (typically 15–60 minutes).
Tested & Approved
Our Best Overall pick, the Verilux Happy Light Light Therapy Lamp, is compact, user-friendly, and effective. Our Best Budget pick, the Carex Light Therapy Lamp, has a no-frills design and wallet-friendly price point.
Regular light therapy has been shown to alleviate symptoms of SAD,1 depression,2 and other mood disorders.34 And though it’s unclear how light therapy works, some suspect the bright light exposure may boost serotonin (the “happy chemical” that naturally occurs in our bodies) or reset our circadian rhythms. As you shop for light therapy lamps, consider size, style, light intensity, and brightness settings. A good light therapy lamp should suit your space, offer 10,000 lux of light exposure,5 and make it easy to adjust brightness when needed.
To find the best light therapy lamps, we tested 15 top-rated options at home, performing five-day tests to find the eight best lamps. Each tester assessed one lamp at a time, using that lamp for 30 minutes daily for five straight days. Every day, testers noted their mood, energy level, and sleep quality before and after using their lamp. And they also assessed the lamps for design, ease of use, and value.
According to our test, here are the best light therapy lamps on the market.

Phone alarm clock
#Phone alarm clock full#
But setting it on your nightstand and using it in the morning can provide the same kind of energizing benefits. The Aura Daylight Therapy Lamp is not an alarm clock, so you can’t set it to come on at a specific time and wake you up with an audio cue. Light Settings: 25 / 310 Lux | Bluetooth: No | Radio: FM | APP Enabled: No She tried out the breathing exercises (the light brightens and dims to prompt calming breaths) and used the sunset simulation to fall asleep, noting that it was a “worthwhile investment” as part of a relaxing bedtime routine. Our reviewer thought the bedtime features were just as good. You can customize both the color and level of brightness. Like other high-end wake-up lights, it simulates a sunrise starting with a deep red light that gradually brightens. Our tests found the light to be extremely effective, and it naturally woke up our reviewer right before the alarm audio started to play. The HF3650/60 has several different features for both falling asleep and waking up. It also has USB and AUX ports on the back so you can charge your phone or play music through the device’s built-in speakers-our reviewer Rebecca noted that the audio quality was “superb” and great for listening to the radio. The design is large but sleek and looks good on a nightstand. But the high price tags gets you an uncompromising wake-up light with plenty of extra perks and features. The Philips HF3650/60 Wake-Up Light is one of the more expensive models out there. Philips Somneo HF3650/60 Sleep and Wake-Up Light Therapy Lamp Review Light Settings: 20 / 300 Lux | Bluetooth: No | Radio: FM | APP Enabled: No She particularly liked how the light gradually brightens and then stays on when you hit snooze, allowing for an overall gentler wake-up experience. Rebecca tried out the SmartSleep as both an alarm clock and a bedside lamp and confirms that the higher brightness levels are great for reading. But the design is sleek, and once the device is set up, it’s easy to use. At night, the sunset feature dims the light from white back to dark red to help you fall asleep.Īs our reviewer Rebecca Isaacs notes, the HF3520 is pretty bulky at 9.9 x 4.6 x 9.2 inches and 3.6 pounds, and it will definitely crowd a small nightstand. You can also set two different alarms and toggle between them with the push of a button. The Philips HF3520 simulates a gradual sunrise to help your body wake up naturally, combining red-to-white light with nature sounds, music, or the radio. This device is fully functional as both an alarm and a bedside lamp, and unique features such as pleasant wake-up sounds, dual alarms, and a bedtime “sunset” setting make it our favorite model on the market. The Philips HF3520 SmartSleep Wake-Up Light is a relatively pricey alarm clock, but it performed so well in our testing that we had to make it first on the list. Philips HF3520 Light Therapy Alarm Clock Review If you’re interested in incorporating smart home gadgets such as lights and speakers into your morning routine, we also recommend checking out our smart home device reviews. We’ve tested out several wake-up light alarm clocks and compiled a list of our favorites below. As an added bonus, many of these alarm clock lights can double as a bedside reading lamp or mood light. By the time the alarm comes on, your body is ready to wake up and there’s a light on beside your bed.
#Phone alarm clock full#
Most wake-up lights take 20 or 30 minutes to reach full brightness and some even simulate the red-to-white colors of a sunrise. They can also be a great antidote to dark winter mornings. These devices use a combination of gradually-brightening light and sound to cue your body’s natural wake-up response, resulting in a more relaxed (and less groggy) morning. If you want a gentler start to your day, consider using a wake-up light alarm clock. And if you wake up before the sun rises or don’t get much natural light in your bedroom, it can be even more disorienting to be startled awake in a fully dark room. Traditional alarm clocks can be an effective but harsh way to wake up in the morning.

Sleep Disorders 101: Insomnia - Sleep Dallas Blog
New Post has been published on https://depression-md.com/sleep-disorders-101-insomnia-sleep-dallas-blog/
Sleep Disorders 101: Insomnia - Sleep Dallas Blog
Insomnia develops in one of every four Americans each year, but despite its prevalence among the general population, insomnia continues to be vastly underdiagnosed. As explained in a 2016 study, patients should be screened for insomnia consistently as they age, as aging and diabetes are most commonly associated with insomnia symptoms.
And while aging is a very broad risk factor, screening is important to tackling insomnia head-on as 27% of insomniacs don’t realize they have the condition.
Considering insomnia is such a widely documented sleep disorder, it’s fair to wonder how this is possible—but insomnia is a bit more complex than simply having it or not. See, 30-35% of people suffer from mild insomnia, meaning that their symptoms aren’t as obvious as someone who suffers from moderate or severe insomnia. On top of that, individuals can suffer from acute (short-term affliction) or chronic insomnia (long-term affliction).
Regardless of where one may fall on the insomnia spectrum, getting diagnosed is essential to getting on a path to effective treatment. Even with mild insomnia, a sufferer may continue to experience symptoms two years after the initial point of diagnosis.
Has this gotten you thinking about those sleepless nights and exhausting mornings? Read on to see if you’re one of the 70 million Americans affected by insomnia.
Do I Have Insomnia?
Insomnia can be experienced in three degrees of severity: mild, moderate, or severe. Insomniacs on the milder side of the spectrum may not experience a significant impact on their social functioning or work productivity, but as the severity increases, insomniacs can become crippled by conditions.
The challenge for those who have suffered from mild insomnia consistently throughout their lives is pinpointing the normal from what’s actually not normal and maybe having adverse health consequences.
Mild insomniacs report receiving inconsistent sleep—they may great sleep for a few days and then fall into a bout of restless sleep, which brings on the following symptoms:
Restlessness
Irritability
Mild anxiety
Daytime fatigue
Consistent tiredness
For insomniacs who suffer from moderate or severe insomnia, it’s obvious that there is an issue because they experience a significant impact on their personal and professional lives. They experience all of the above symptoms but to a more severe degree.
Moderate insomniacs report almost never experiencing a good night’s rest and can feel the impacts of their sleep deprivation in all aspects of their lives.
Severe insomniacs may feel completely suffocated by this disorder. On top of having trouble sleeping each and every night, there will also be noticeable differences in their ability to maintain relationships and stay on top of their work duties.
Other important specifics about insomnia:
You may be diagnosed with insomnia if your sleep problems persist for at least a month.
Insomnia may lead you to become anxious about sleep, exacerbating insomnia-induced anxiety.
There isn’t a specific test that can be done to diagnose insomnia—it’s fully diagnosed based on patient-experience. The exception is if insomnia is an underlying condition of another serious sleep disorder, such as obstructive sleep apnea or narcolepsy.
You can also suffer from chronic or acute insomnia:
Chronic: A person with chronic insomnia consistently suffers from their insomnia for at least three nights a week, for three months, on a cyclical basis.
Acute: Typically lasts a maximum of three months and stems from a stressful life event. As you recover from the event that triggered insomnia, symptoms should also begin to subside.
Treatment For Mild Insomnia
If you suspect that you have mild insomnia, it is important to talk to your doctor and not ignore your symptoms. Insomnia, in any form, can be an indicator of a much larger, and potentially more serious, health issue. Luckily, for those who do have mild insomnia, there are some basic steps you can take to try and improve your sleep.
Don’t nap during the day. Naps can offset your already precarious sleep schedule. Instead, plan to start getting ready for bed earlier than you already do and set an alarm at the same time every morning—even on the weekends. While getting up “early” on the weekends can be difficult, it’s important to maintain a consistent sleep and wake regiment until you start getting quality sleep.
Exercise earlier in the day versus in the evening. Being active can affect when we’re able to fall asleep. How? By working out in the evening, our biological clock starts to think we want to be more alert in the evenings. By exercising in the morning or early afternoon, we’re keeping a schedule that promotes our brain slowing down in the evenings and our body releasing the sleep-hormone melatonin before bed.
Your diet is intrinsically linked to your sleep health. Consume a balanced diet of sleep-promoting foods. Avoid caffeine starting at least six hours before bedtime, avoid drinking alcohol too late in the evening, and limit dense, heavy foods directly before bed.
Your bedroom should be exclusively for intimacy and sleep. Working in bed/in your bedroom has been shown to be detrimental to our sleep health. Separate those spaces.
Avoid screen usage right before bed. The blue light emitted by electronic devices keeps our brains active. Instead, take a bath, read, or journal directly before bed.
According to the Mayo Clinic, certain forms of alternative medicine have also been shown to improve sleep:
Melatonin, which can be found at most groceries, pharmacies, and markets is a natural sleep hormone our body needs to have a regulated sleep cycle. While taking over-the-counter melatonin may improve our sleep that evening, it’s not considered a long-term solution for insomnia.
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat pain and help with stress management. For insomniacs, this can help alleviate the stress that can leave our brains “running” from thought to thought when we lay down to sleep. Again, while acupuncture can temporarily relieve insomnia symptoms, it’s not a long-term solution.
Yoga and Tai Chi are two stress-relieving practices that have been shown to improve sleep. Both practices relax the body, lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety.
Meditation is full of benefits –not only is it shown to improve sleep, but it can also help control chronic pain, reduce anxiety, improve memory and attention span, and lower blood pressure.
Treatment for Moderate and Severe Insomnia
While all the above suggestions are great for anyone suffering from insomnia, for those that suffer moderately and severely from insomnia, non-pharmacologic therapies and pharmacologic therapies may be necessary.
Stimulus Control Therapy: According to a 2010 NCBI study, “Stimulus control therapy is based on the premise that insomnia is a conditioned response to temporal (bedtime) and environmental cues that are usually associated with sleep.” In this form of therapy, the patient retrains their brain to associate their bed and their bedroom with sleep.
Sleep Restriction Therapy: The same 2010 study defines sleep restriction therapy as a therapy that “…consists of restricting the amount of time spent in bed to nearly match the subjective amount of time spent sleeping.” Only sleeping five hours each night? That’s the amount of time you’re allowed in bed. By restricting sleep, sleep deprivation is slowly induced, causing the person to sleep more heavily when they do get into bed.
Relaxation Therapy: For some insomniacs, not only are their brains going nonstop during the day but at night as well—their arousal systems are constantly going. Relaxation therapy targets this.
Cognitive Therapy: As mentioned above, some insomniacs begin to develop anxiety around their bed, bedroom, and sleep. Cognitive therapy’s aim is to break down the negative thinking around sleep and the sleep environment.
Paradoxical Intention: This form of therapy works best on individuals who experience performance anxiety around sleep. The patient, instead of fixating on falling asleep, is encouraged to stay awake. Over time, this will change the way they think about sleep and the anxiety around sleeping.
All of the above therapies are best practiced under the supervision of a therapist, sleep physician, and/or general practitioner. Attempting to partake in any of these therapies alone or without the guidance of a professional may result in the insomniac’s symptoms worsening.
Insomnia doesn’t have to be your normal. Sleep physicians, like our very own Dr. Dibra, can help. Dr. Dibra is board-certified in sleep medicine and specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of sleep disorders. Reflecting on Color Therapy
How Color Can Help Us Heal
By Kirsten Antony, R.N. ~ This time of year, as the days get shorter and the nights get colder, we can find ourselves longing for longer and lighter days. Every season should be a celebration of life, and for these dark, winter days and nights, light and color have come to symbolize hope, love and brighter days ahead. Through the light of luminaries, candles, yule logs and colored lights that decorate our homes and trees, we can literally light up with happiness and warmth from light and color. These different types of light and color can be symbolic and have religious context but can also be completely practical as we need to light our path through the darkness. Light and color can also have an effect holistically as it can bring about psychological, physical, and spiritual changes when used in a therapeutic manner as a method of healing. The use of color and light for healing purposes is also known as chromotherapy or vibrational healing. To understand how light and color can have an impact of healing, we must first understand that on a quantum level, we are all light beings. The bodies that we see are simply light vibrating at a lower electromagnetic frequency that is visible to the human eye and we consider matter. Light is pure energy and color is the interaction of light energy and matter. The colors that we can see on the visible light spectrum are expressed through wavelengths. The specific color we view depends on the set electromagnetic frequency. For example, red has the longest wavelength on one end of the spectrum and violet is on the other end of the spectrum and has the shortest wavelength and highest vibratory rate. Outside of the visible light spectrum would be ultraviolet and infrared light. Chromotherapy uses light and color to balance the energies that run throughout the body. Light and color are being used to treat a variety of medical conditions. Full-spectrum white light is used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), addictions and behavioral disorders. These artificial lights are used to mimic sunlight and helps balance brain chemistry. Blue light is used in hospitals to treat neonatal jaundice. Blue light is also being used to treat skin conditions like acne. Red light has been used for years in healing the skin and has become popular lately in the beauty industry in assisting with cosmetic skin issues. There are many products on the market that offer light or color therapy. Some of my favorite products integrate more than one modality. Aromatherapy diffusers that also use color therapy are available as well as infrared saunas that offer detox through heat as well as the use of color therapy. Alarm clocks that use light that brightens as you arise eases you into the start of the day. Westminster, Colorado is home to Life Center and a unique healing experience in what is known as The Harmonic Egg. Gail Lynn, PhD, is creator of The Harmonic Egg and owner of Life Center. The Harmonic Egg is a healing chamber in the shape of a large dodecahedron egg. This innovative technology offers healing through light, frequency, vibration and sound in a sacred geometric shape. The client relaxes back in a zero gravity chair while being surrounded and embraced by soothing light, sound and vibration. My experience in the Harmonic Egg was one of complete peacefulness and a level of deep stillness and relaxation that I had never experienced before. Beyond physical healing, color can bring beauty into our lives through art, interior design and fashion. Analyzing the colors we are drawn to and look into the meaning behind the colors can be playful and fun! A sampling of a typical color chart and the meanings the energies express may look like this: Red: Excitement, love and energy Orange: Stimulating, happy and warmth Yellow: Laughter, hunger and intelligence Green: Nature, money and harmony Blue: Communication, serenity and truth Purple: Wisdom, royalty and spirituality Pink: Romance, calmness and gentleness The colors we choose to wear can be an indication of the need to balance a certain energy in the body. When angry, wearing red would be a color that could provoke more of the same type of energy in the body. To balance the energy, wearing a color of the opposite nature, such as blue, would be good to bring the body back into balance. Not “feeling blue”, but not wanting to be “seeing red” anymore? Laugh it off and wear something yellow. The psychology of color is also fascinating. The colors of red, orange and yellow are used in many logos and interior design in fast food establishments in hopes to stimulate the appetite of the patrons and get us in and out of the “fast” food restaurants. Red, orange and yellow are warm colors can be very stimulating and cool colors such as blue and purple can be used to bring about relaxation. The Christmas season is often associated with the colors red and green. The history of these color choices and what they represent could possibly be traced all the way back to pagan celebrations and the use of holly (green) and berries (red) in celebration of the winter solstice. Bringing the color green indoors during a time when most of nature is hibernating is symbolic of celebrating life during the season of slumber.
This holiday season, I hope you take time to reflect on the love, light, hope and beauty that surrounds us all. Happy Holidays! Best Wake Up Lights of 2019
The blog article Best Wake Up Lights of 2019 is republished from https://www.perspectief.org
You probably know what it’s like to be woken up by a traditional alarm clock.
At your chosen wake up time, the alarm starts it’s loud beeping, buzzing, or ringing, startling you out of a sound sleep. You wake up confused, not really sure of what’s going on. After a few seconds, you realize your alarm clock is, basically, screaming at you.
Eventually, maybe after slapping the snooze button a few times, you drag yourself out of bed. But even if you got the full eight hours of sleep everyone says you need, you still feel groggy and cranky, and you just want to crawl back under the covers.
Now a traditional alarm clock isn’t a bad thing. These devices do exactly what they are designed to do. But wouldn’t it be great if there was a more pleasant, less jarring way to wake up on time.
Fortunately, there is. You just need wake up lights.
Wake up light alarm clocks use a combination of light and sound help you to wake up more naturally. Rather than startling you awake with a sudden, loud, and often unpleasant sound, sunrise alarm clocks ease you into a waking state.
About 30 minutes before a wake up light alarm clock goes off, a light that slowly increases in brightness will help you to wake up gradually. Often, by the time the alarm sounds, you will already be awake, and will feel more refreshed and alert than you would with a traditional alarm clock. But even if you aren’t fully awake yet, you’ll be close enough that the sound of the alarm won’t be as harsh and jarring. As a result, you won’t feel so groggy and cranky when you get out of bed. In fact, you’re more likely to feel refreshed, energized, and eager to take on the day.
Sunrise simulating alarm clocks have become quite popular over the years. And, below, you’ll find our picks for the top 3 wake up lights on the market. Our selections are packed with features, and have many satisfied customers singing their praises. We also made our picks so that, no matter your budget, you can find a quality, feature-rich sunrise clock that will suit your needs.
So, without further ado, here are our top 3 wake up light alarm clocks.

The Philips HF3520’s light can be set bright enough to read by. This is perfect if you don’t have space on your nightstand for both an alarm clock and a reading lamp.
Non-slip rubber feet keep the alarm clock in place.
If you’re looking for a sunrise simulator that’s packed with features, but is also extremely easy to use, you can’t go wrong with the Philips Wake up Light with Colored Sunrise Simulation.

2. The Philips Wake-Up Light with Radio

Our second pick is another sunrise simulator from Philips.
The Philips HF3505 Wake up Light Alarm Clock is a light therapy lamp that’s been clinically proven to help users wake up feeling refreshed and energized. This natural light alarm clock wakes you up more gently and naturally than traditional alarm clocks. And it does it by using light that mimics a natural sunrise.
Those who use the Philips HF3505 find that, when they get out of bed, they feel more energized. They also tend to be in a better mood than when they are startled awake by more harsh and disruptive alarm clocks.
The Philips Wake-Up Light with Radio wakes you with a combination of sound and gently brightening light.
Thirty minutes before your chosen wake up time, the alarm clock’s light will turn on. This light will gradually increase in brightness and intensity until your room is filled with a bright but warm yellow light. This brightening light will slowly and gently ease you into wakefulness. By the time the light has brightened fully, you’ll probably be awake and raring to go. But, just to make sure, a gentle beep will sound at your chosen wake up time.
The Philips Wake-Up Light with Radio has a lot going for it.
Wake up to the Sound of Your Choice
At your wake up time, one of two natural bird sounds will begin to play. Many find that bird sounds help them to wake up faster. But if you prefer, you can wake up to the sound of the built in FM radio set to your favorite station.
Brighter Settings for Heavy Sleepers
If you’re a heavy sleeper, you might need brighter lights to help you wake up in the morning. Luckily, the Philips HF3505 Wake up Light Alarm Clock can go up to 200 lux.
A Satisfaction Guarantee
Like other sunrise simulators from Philips, the Philips HF3505 includes a 90 Day, No Hassle, Money Back Guarantee. If you’re not happy with the product for any reason, return it within 90 days for a full refund.
Features
The Philips Wake-Up Light with Radio has many useful features.
Choose between two natural bird sounds.
The built in FM radio is easy to adjust.
Includes a Tap-To-Snooze function. Just tap the top of the sunrise alarm clock, and you can sleep in for an extra 9 minutes.
A beep function helps to ensure that you wake up on time.
The Philips Wake Up Light with Radio has 10 brightness settings to choose from. And you can easily change the brightness to suit your needs. For example, if you want to wake up a bit faster one morning, you can use a brighter setting.
Anti slip rubber feet ensure that the alarm clock will stay in place.
The Philips HF3505 has a touch screen, making it even easier to use.
The Philips Wake-Up Light with Radio doesn’t have quite as many features as some of the company’s other models. But it’s a great option for anyone searching for a quality sunrise alarm clock.

The third pick on our list is also the most affordable.
It can be difficult to find a good sunrise alarm clock that’s inexpensive, and is equipped with more than a few basic features. But that’s exactly what you get with the totobay 2nd Generation Sunrise Simulation Wake up Light.
This budget-friendly sunrise simulator uses a combination of light and gentle sound to help you wake up naturally. And it has many features that make it an attractive choice.

Similar to some more expensive sunrise alarm clocks, the totobay Sunrise Simulation Wake Up Light gives you a choice of 10 brightness settings. You can also choose between 7 color settings, including warm white, green, red, blue, purple, orange and indigo.
7 Wake-Up Sounds to Choose From
What sounds do you want to hear when you wake up in the morning? Well, this sun alarm clock from totobay gives you seven to choose from, including relaxing piano music, the sounds of crashing ocean waves, and the soothing sound of birdsong. Or you might prefer waking up to the built-in FM radio tuned to your favorite station,
Includes a Battery Backup
One of the most annoying things about losing power is having to reset your clocks. But with the totobay Sunrise Simulation Wake up Light, that doesn’t have to be a problem.
When you inspect this sunrise simulator, you’ll see a place to insert two AAA batteries. If your power goes out, the batteries will maintain your time and FM radio settings.
Just keep in mind that this alarm clock’s wake up light function won’t be operational if it’s only being powered by the batteries. Also, the batteries aren’t included, so you’ll have to buy your own.
Features
The totobay Sunrise Simulation Wake Up Light has more features than some other sunrise alarm clocks in this price range. See for yourself.
The sunrise simulation wake up light helps you wake up naturally in the morning.
The sunset simulation sleep light helps you fall asleep at night.
There are 10 brightness levels to choose from.
You can set the light to a dim setting and use it as a night light. Or set the light to a brighter setting to use as a reading light.
There are 7 wake up sounds to choose from.
The alarm clock has a built in FM radio.
The LED display is easy to read.
You can choose between three time displays, including High, Low and Off.
You can decide whether the time is displayed in 12 hour or 24 hour format.
The totobay Sunrise Simulation Wake up Light has a Smart Snooze Function with Touch Control. Gently press the snooze button, and you can sleep in for an extra 5 minutes.
Touch controls allow you to easily set the time, choose radio stations, set the alarm, adjust the brightness, and more.
The unit can be powered by a USB cable and a wall jack. The totobay 6638 Sunrise Simulation Wake up Light might not have as many features as some more expensive sunrise simulators. But, for someone looking for a more affordable wake up light alarm clock, this is a great choice.

In Good Company
Cas x Reader
Word Count: 959
Warnings: slight mention of violence, implied depression/fear of sleeping, light fluffiness.
**Sorry for the cheesiness. This is what happens when I write late at night. Enjoy.
You stared up at your ceiling, the orange light from your alarm clock giving the room an eerie glow. 3:38AM. Wonderful. It looked like you were in for another sleepless night. This would be the third one this week, and it was Thursday. But sleep was for the weak, right?
You slowly sat up and slipped your legs over the side of your bed, letting them hang there for a minute. That last case really got to you. Vampires recruiting children, or anything involving children, was a big no-no in your repertoire. You couldn’t help but hurt for them. Even though they would be okay, you couldn’t help but think about the mental scars and years of therapy they would need. Especially now that they know the monsters they had nightmares about were very real and around every corner.
Not a very settling thought.
You finally pick yourself up off the bed and head for the door. Your door opened silently, thankfully, since Dean and Sam always seemed to hear you move around at night. The last thing you wanted was an interrogation at nearly four in the morning.
One of the small lamps on the large map table was left on, guiding you as you headed for the kitchen. Once there, you flipped on the light. Your eyes strained as you adjusted to the intense fluorescent glow. You opened a cabinet and grabbed your favorite mug. A cup of tea sounded wonderful.
And lonely.
Your chest ached at the thought. Sure, waking Sam and Dean would end in an earful of nagging and overwhelming concern. They cared about you like a sister. That thought alone comforted you a bit. However, the loneliness was a bit much to handle at times. Like tonight.
You silently prayed that this sleepless phase would end soon as you dipped the teabag into the mug of hot water. Chamomile was meant to relax, right? Hopefully its marketing ploy had some truth to it.
You sighed as you leaned against the kitchen counter, pulling your mug to your chest. The warmth radiated through your shirt sending soothing comfort through you. As you took a sip, you heard a whooshing sound come from the map room. You rolled your eyes as you imagined Dean or Sam about to march through the door.
“Hello, Y/N,” a low, grumbly voice greeted from the doorway. You peered up in disbelief to see Cas gazing awkwardly at you, as usual.
“Oh, hey there Cas.” You shifted your weight, avoiding eye contact. What the hell was he doing here?
Cas shuffled closer to you, a concerned look painted across his tired face. “I heard you… praying.”
Shit. Your brow furrowed as you realized you had actually prayed. “Oh, yeah,” you mumbled. Embarrassment shot through you. You could feel your cheeks flush.
“You sounded sad. I was afraid you were in danger.” Cas leaned against the counter beside you, his azure eyes darkened with worry.
“The only danger I’m in is losing my mind,” you responding, chuckling at your own sarcasm.
Cas tilted his head. Oh yeah, sarcasm and angels generally didn’t mix.
“Your mind is a figurative—“
“Forget it, Cas. I’m sorry you intercepted my whining. I’ve just been having a hard time sleeping since that case with the vampire children. I guess I’m just sensitive.” You sighed, taking another sip of your quickly cooling tea.
Cas’s sapphire gaze was fixed on you, making your skin tingle. Cas was a good friend. Childish at times, minus the jokes, but good. You knew that every emotion he was capable of experiencing was sincere, especially concern. It was one all of you experienced more than you cared to admit.
“Well, if it helps, the children are well. Their lives should return to a relatively normal routine soon.” Cas’s voice was soft, almost silky.
“I know, Cas. But there is something within me that can’t let it go. Their lives were turned upside-down.” You lowered your head and sighed. Damn your feelings.
“But that doesn’t mean you need to turn yours upside-down. That isn’t going to change anything for them and it’s surely isn’t going to do you any good.” He leaned closer to you. The small space between you buzzed with an intense energy that made your stomach flutter. You leaned your head on his shoulder. “Thanks Cas. Thanks for caring.” You turned your face towards his, your nose grazing his chiseled jaw.
“Of course, Y/N.” His voice was barely a whisper. You could feel his entire body stiffen as you pulled yourself closer to the angel.
In a second, he stood in front of you, his muscular body pressing yours into the counter. Your lower back ached as the counter’s edge pressed into you, but you didn’t care. You smiled up at the beautiful blue-eyed being. He quickly wrapped his arms around your waist, his face hovering just inches from yours. His lips curled into a slight smile before gently pressing against yours. You could feel every muscle in your body relax. All of the thoughts of the children, of everything, just floated away. Your hands snaked up his rock hard front and grabbed at the edges of his trench coat, pulling him harder against you. His soft lips danced along yours before he deepened the kiss. He lifted a hand from your waist and gently ran his fingers through your hair. He let out a deep sigh as he pulled away, his eyes locked on yours.
“I’ve been waiting to do that for a long time,” he murmured from his lightly swollen lips. You smiled up at him. Your cheeks heated. “Are you feeling better?” He asked innocently.
You nodded. “Yeah, I think I just needed some good company.”

7 new insomnia fixes straight out of science fiction
You might have heard about the sleep robot but that’s not the only new insomnia fix that could cure your sleepless nights. Sharon Walker goes under the covers to investigate the new sleep developments
Glowing smart phones, flickering TVs, that over stimulating blue light from your computer. We’re often told to leave the tech at the bedroom door if we want a good night’s sleep but now the machines are coming to the rescue, with incredible technological advances designed to ensure that counting sheep becomes a thing of the past.
From soothing smart rings to breath-synched sleep robots, whether you want to fall asleep quicker or stay asleep longer there’s a gadget to help. ‘Technology has long been seen as the enemy of a good night’s sleep,’ says Bansri Shah, the founder of the SOMNEX | The Sleep Show, which launches at the Truman Brewery, October 12-14.
‘But as technology continues to evolve to keep up with human demand, the sleep tech industry is no exception and we’re seeing some incredible developments.’
sleep is the holy grail of good health, but it’s not always possible to get a full night’s slumber
The first ever show of its kind dedicated totally to sleep, Somnex are expecting 10,000 visitors through the doors – that’s a lot of people seeking some serious shut-eye. But it’s no surprise that sleep is big business. Sleep is the holy grail of good health, but unlike clean eating, or stepping up your cardio, try as you might, it’s not always possible to get a full night’s slumber.
One third of Brits sleep just five to six hours a night says the Great British Bedtime Report. According to the Sleep Council’s one in three UK adults have trouble sleeping and that figure rises to one in two in urban areas. ‘The top three things keeping us up at night are stress, financial difficulties and children,’ says Shah.
As anyone who has trouble sleeping will know that lack of sleep can drive you to despair and even lead to serious mental health issues. Insomnia doubles your chances of suffering from depression, according a paper published in the journal of The Lancet Psychiatry last year. The report found that CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) significantly improved insomnia, but the dropout rate is high. So, there’s clearly a market for alternatives.
But what are they and how do they work? We asked Shah, who was responsible for selecting the weird and wonderful of array of sleep tech gadgets for the show, to talk us through the options.
1. The Somnox Sleep Robot
A fully fledged peanut shaped robot with four key functions: breathing, sound, affection and comfort. The robot is covered in a soft cloth squidgy outer layer that resembles the feel of a mattress.
Best for: Anyone who has trouble dropping off.
Designed by ex-robotics engineers including high-flying TED Talking wunderkind Julian Jagtenberg and was funded with a Kickstarter campaign raising $240,000, with 500 backers, in just four weeks. Jagtenberg had the idea when his mother started complaining about sleep problems.
‘The issue wasn’t that she couldn’t fall asleep, but that she repeatedly woke up in the night,’ Jagtenberg told Fast Company. He didn’t want his mother resorting to prescription sleep aids so built a prototype based on research on what calms anxious sleepers, like mindful meditation.
‘I really wanted to create something that was not just a product, not just a lifeless thing, but really a companion to take care of you in times when you were anxious or stressed during the night and no one is there to help you because everyone’s asleep,’ Jagtenberg explained.
How it works: ‘It’s basically a device you can spoon, which you hold and hug and which influences your breathing so that you drop into a meditative state and fall asleep faster,’ says Shah. ‘The robot ‘breathes’ in a slow, regular breathing pattern, paired with soothing sounds, so that your breath slows down and synchronises with the device which lowers your stress levels so you wake up feeling refreshed.’
Why it’s better than counting sheep: ‘It’s been designed to be huggable,’ says Shah, ‘which also replicates the proven benefits of sleeping with a partner.’
RRP: £499 incl. VAT, available for pre-order in the Somnox webshop. UK Delivery starts in November 2018.
2. Philip Stein – the sleep bracelet
One of the key players in the current trend for smart jewellery this chic modern bracelet, with patented technology connects you to the earth’s natural frequencies, so that you get a better night’s sleep and wake-up wake up feeling refreshed. Since it launched in 2003, Philip Stein has sold over 1 million bracelets & watches and include Madonna, Oprah and American athlete Christian Taylor in their list of advocates.
Best for: Anyone who wakes up in the night or who suffers from erratic or disturbed sleep.
How it works: ‘You put it on an hour before bed to avert man-made frequencies, such as Wi-Fi, which disrupt our body’s balance and disturb our sleep patterns,’ explains the Philip Stein website. ‘As it may take some time to adjust to the nuances of the technology, it’s recommended that you wear the sleep bracelet for 30 consecutive nights and then evaluate the effect on your body.’
‘Each stage of sleep is associated with different frequencies. The technology in our sleep bracelet picks up and channels a variety of these frequencies, and is perfectly calibrated to help you to sleep better.’
Sounds farfetched? Apparently hard science is on its way and initial trials on the Philip Stein Day bracelets look promising.
‘Results from double blind studies at the Neurokinetics Institute in Canada and at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida suggest improved balance, ocular focus and a reduced feeling of lightheadedness when standing up abruptly – all wellbeing indicators,’ states the Philip Stein website.
Why it’s better than counting sheep: ‘You can just put it on and forget about it as it’s not linked to an app like most sleep gadgets,’ says Shah. ‘But you’ll need to be patient. It takes about three weeks to notice a difference, four for some people.’
RRP: £265
3. Oura Ring – the wearable tech
Touted as the ‘new secret weapon for personal improvement’, the ring is designed to be worn 24/7, tracking all your daily activity, including sleep, to pinpoint how your daily choices affect your body.
Oura Health, the Finnish company behind the Oura ring, was founded in 2013 and has received over 22,000 pre-orders for their second-generation Oura rings, which are going down a storm in North America.
Best for: Anyone interested in improving their overall health and fitness, as well as their sleep. ‘It’s great if you already have a Fitbit and want to take it to the next level,’ says Shah.
How it works: The ring tracks over 80 variables from heart rate and body temperature to the number of steps you take, to create a detailed picture of your health and sleep.
‘This is all fed into an app and online account which doctors and sleep coaches use to suggest how you can change your daily activities to become healthier,’ says Shah. ‘For example it can suggest the best bedtimes for a good night’s sleep.’
Why it’s better than counting sheep: It’s chic smart jewellery. What’s not to like? ‘It holds your data for six weeks, so that you don’t have to keep checking in every day and don’t become obsessed,’ says Shah. ‘The ring learns about your body and gives you an optimum fitness plan and bed times.’
RRP: £244, £325, £816 *depending on design.
4. Kokoon – the intelligent headphones
‘Intelligent headphones’ which come with sensors to measure your responses and a sleep-inducing audio library of relaxing music, as well as guided relaxation exercises used in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) proven to help people sleep.
‘They worked with sleep scientists to understand the best techiques to help people switch off,’ says Shah.
Best for: ‘Anyone who has trouble winding down before bed. Or anyone who wants to block out noise and nap during the day,’ says Shah.
How they work: They are paired with an app that measures how long it takes the listener to relax and fall asleep, so that they track and ‘remember’ what’s working.
Why it’s better than counting sheep: The headphones recognise once the listener has fallen asleep and will automatically phase out into masking white noise.
RRP: £349
5. Neybox’s ‘Pillow App’ – the smart app
Pillow is a tracking app that’s designed to work with your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
Best for: A newbie, who wants to understand their sleep patterns.
How it works: ‘The aim is to help you identify the conditions you need for a good night’s sleep,’ says Shah.
Pillow’s key features include: automatic sleep tracking – you get a graph every morning telling you how long you’ve been in REM (Rapid Eye Movement sleep) light and deep sleep – and personalised recommendations, insights and sleep statistics.
Why it’s better than counting sheep: A smart alarm clock is included in app and wakes you up at the lightest sleep stage making mornings that bit more bearable. It also records audio including any sleep talking, so good for a laugh in the morning.
Available on the App Store since 2014 and with over five million downloads worldwide; Pillow has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian and Forbes.
RRP: Free to download, premium features can be unlocked via a one-time in-app purchase at £4.99
6. SOMNUVA – the new way to sleep
WHAT: The audio system has been engineered to replicate a healthy sleep pattern of 5 cycles of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM sleep by ‘humming’ a specific frequencies to retrain the brain for a more effective night’s sleep.
Best for: Anyone who has trouble dropping off or who wakes up groggy. ‘It’s good for people who don’t like wearing gadgets in bed, as it sits behind the bed,’ says Shah.
How it works: The sleep training algorithm of tones and pulses is masked by familiar sounds, such as babbling brooks, waves and wind, which the user quickly tunes out. The background hum then retrains the brain’s sleep patterns over a matter of weeks. You can set the machine in four different modes: Deep Sleep, Easy Sleep, Fall Asleep and Power Nap.
Why it’s better than counting sheep: An independent trial found that using the Somnuva for just 21 days improved 92% of the users’ sleep by an average of 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Somnuva is launching at with a special price for anyone ordering at the event.
RRP: £214 *special SOMNEX show price. Standard price is £389.
7. Holosphere – the virtual reality space
WHAT: Taking mindfulness to the next level, Holosphere creates world-class, immersive experiences ‘that make a positive impact on peoples’ lives’. ‘It’s very experimental,’ says Shah. ‘They’re developing a new experience with sleep practitioners that will be unveiled at SOMNEX. ‘It’s not something you can buy to take home but the idea is it will eventually be used in hospitals and by sleep practitioners,’ says Shah. Holosphere’s previous work has included the Serenity Forest, with a sound track by David Attenborough.
Best for: Sleep-deprived escapists.
How it works: Immersive experiences have been shown to help people relax and create new habits.
Why it’s better than counting sheep: You’ll enter a whole new world – one where sleeping is easy.
Holosphere are producing an exclusive VR experience for the SOMNEX show.
SOMNEX | The Sleep Show – To see these intriguing sleep tech gadgets first-hand, alongside a full programme of sleep workshops and lectures by world-leading sleep experts, head to The Old Truman Brewery in London, 12th – 14th October 2018.

After having a valve replaced last fall my insurance opted not to renew my policy. I am 63 and currently have a short term policy that only can be renewed once and then I am out of luck. Where can I look for coverage? I'd take something even if it excluded my prior condition even though I am now much healtier than I was before the surgery.
How do car insurance companies evalulate your insurance?
I am living in the UK and i use one of those car comparison websites to find the cheapest car insurance, (I've entered hundreds of cars make/models) But i still don't have a clue as to how car insurers operate for e.g i used confused.com to find the cheapest insurance on a >1997, BMW 3 series, 1.8, convertible, manual, petrol, value of car 2500.00 & the cheapest insurance quote they find for me is 1136.72, on third party fire & theft >1989, Nissan Micra, 1.0 manual, petrol, value of car 75.00, & the cheapest quote they find for me is 1641.88??????????????? on third party fire & theft ALL of my other circumstances stay the same, address, millage, what type of car alarm and tracker i will use, what the car will be used for everything is the same I was under the impression that the more bigger the car, the more powerful the engine, the more likelihood of the car been stolen will be the more expensive one on the insurance (The BMW) So why in Gods name is the Micra's insurance 500.00 extra???????? Halp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!""

Getting out of a speeding ticket for insurance purposes?
Is there a way I can get out of a speeding/failure to meet at a stop sign ticket? I really don't care about paying the ticket or court costs at all, but I just can not, really, really, can not pay the extra insurance money. I am paying out of state tuition AND I am in Architecture. Architecture is SUCH an expensive major. The police officer (whose name I can't even read on the ticket because it is just a scribble) gave me a ticket for speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign. I have always been a great driver, I never speed, I always stop at stop signs, I don't drink/text/talk over the phone and drive, I always have my seatbelt on. This one time I absolutely needed to get home at 2am I decide to go a little faster and yup, of course I get a ticket. I don't want to lie, I was doing 36 on a 20 zone at the time, I admit it even though I honestly did not realize I was going at 36 I didn't' do it on purpose. I didn't think hey I'm just gonna go faster because no one is around , I really honestly did not notice I was going at 36. But I am not sure about the stop sign thing. Honestly I was not paying much attention because I drive through this stop sign everyday but I distinctly remember there was a car already at the stop sign coming from the left so I HAD to stop. There was absolutely no one else coming from any of the four sides, so I might have not stopped completely but I did slow down almost to a stop and then kept going. Then like I said I was going at 36 on a 20 zone. This was at 2 a clock in the morning when there was literally not a soul around. The police officer was practically hiding in a dark, empty parking lot and came out of no where. I really don't want to make excuses for myself. I know what I did was wrong and I'll admit it. But this is my first ticket, and I really don't want t have to pay so much more money on my insurance for a slip as small as this one. My boyfriend was with mi in the car if that means anything. I really don't know, I've never had a ticket before. I've been reading up on how to get out of a ticket, and a lot of people say it is good to talk to the officer, and I thought about doing it but the officer's name is not readable at all. He also completely misspelled my name. In Puerto Rico we use both my father's and mother's last names so I have two last names. Let's say my name is X, my father's last name is Y and my mother's is Z. In Puerto Rico it goes like X Y Z and since my license is from Puerto Rico that is how it is written in my license. But the police officer wrote X Z. So my name is wrong in the ticket. I don't know if that counts for anything, someone told me that if they misspell my name or the officer's it means the ticket is dropped. This seems unlikely but hey, like I said I really have no clue. Again, I don't want to make excuses for myself, but I just can't afford extra insurance costs. I just cant...""
