Introducing: Digital Displays!

We're ready to shake things up with this blog!

In addition to the community recs bookshelf (you can still participate in that, by the way!), we will be doing monthly themed "displays." It will be just like a display in a public library except it's posted on a blog and this blog doesn't have the books. Just .pngs of the covers.

The goal is to connect people looking for books with a diverse range of titles. Some may be well-known, others may have been lost in the publishing world.

It's all for fun and for quick recommendations for people looking for their next LGBT book!

Disclaimer: these won't be personal recommendations. There may be some personal recommendations (those will be noted!), but most of them won't be. They will be carefully selected through reviews, award lists, etc. Mod is a librarian and has made actual book displays for years, so you can trust!

Displays have been planned for the rest of the year, and if the engagement is good enough, this will continue into 2025! Here's a peak at what August's books will be:

Spontaneous season idea based off of @lilhub post on the Clear Eden PNG

Season of Darkness.

Now, once I saw that picture in the post, of the clear PNG of Eden, I had so many ideas running through my head over it.

The city around the Crystal must have been gorgeous in it's prime. A bustling city filled with aristocrats, merchants from all over the kingdom, the finest colleges, museums, hospitals, all contained within it's walls. The center, holding the grand place of Resh. Ancestors living in harmony, a place of grandeur and tranquility.

And then it explodes.

Imagine the fallout. Darkness falling from the skies, buildings falling apart due to the explosion. The deaths, the destruction.

This season would focus on the spirits and how they are coping with this new environment, the shell of their home.

The Spirits:

The spirits are kind of linear, the Season Guide being the first you meet. The further in you go, the more damaged the spirits are, and located in more and more dangerous areas as the closer you get to the Crystal itself (You won't have to enter PNR so don't worry about that)

The Season Guide would be a writer who lived on the outer premises of the city, with minor crystal growth and tears in their clothes, but somewhat stable, understanding that they have passed, and wants to help the other spirits.

First spirit; Strong Museum Guide. The spirit is located relatively close to the season guide, inside a large building, close to some rubble. The memory shows the aftermath of the explosion approximately two weeks or so out of the explosion. The spirit runs around helping any trapped spirits who might be under rubble, fighting off Dark Crabs (like the ones from Shattering), and generally surviving until the memory ends, and we see the final cutscene of them get trapped under rubble so heavy that they cannot push it away. Other spirits try to help but they can't, and the spirit is overcome by the crabs. Their emote could be pushing something heavy off them. They could have some tears on them, and a few dark crystals starting to bud.

Second Spirit; Caring Older Brother. This memory is further into the city, sheltered in a wide corner, in what was originally a park. The memory starts off with two spirits, siblings, as they battle their way around the city a week after the initial explosion. They scrounge for food, trying to find some adults, and then get separated. The memory ends, and we get a cutscene of the brother eventually finds their sibling, unconscious. They run up to them, and carefully hug them. Their fate is unknown. The emote could be a gentle hug on the friendship tree. The older brother has some stronger dark crystals on him, while the sibling has some minor damage, however, they are limping in the memories.

Third Spirit; Kind Librarian. This memory is inside a middle sized library nook, partially underwater now, only accessible from the chimney. The memory starts off probably hours after the explosion, when people are running away from the center. Cold winds and dark rains are kicking up and the librarian, along with their partner, usher people inside. They both take care of the patrons, and then the librarian sees someone outside, attempting to run towards the library as winds start to become stronger, dark rain falling heavily now. The cutscene shows the librarian reaching out, only for a heavy gust of wind to take the other spirit and send them on an unknown fate. The emote is someone reaching out to grab someone's hand. The librarian can have a tired look to them, as they have been helping spirits nonstop for approx. 12 hours or more now.

Final Spirit; Whistling Laundry Maid. This is the hardest spirit to acquire, as she is in part of the castle that's slightly elevated but still close to the ground. The memory starts before the explosion happens at all. She is gathering laundry from the armory of the guards looker room, and is walking down a long corridor. Somehow, she gets lost, and wanders closer to the interior of the castle. She is whistling to herself the whole way. The memory ends suddenly midstep, and the cutscene starts. The spirit is walking, and we hear her whistle. Suddenly, the castle starts rumbling, fast and hard. And then she looks to the wall next to her as it starts cracking. The explosion happens. All goes to black. We see the spirit, struggling to get up as she is badly damaged now, with lost limbs and immediate crystal growth that gets bigger and bigger. She slowly realizes she's not going to get up, and lays back down. She starts to whistle again, maybe to comfort herself, as the sound gets weaker and weaker. The memory ends. The emote is a new call. A small whistling tune.

Quests:

The first quest actually starts with you enter the season area, marked by a door slightly to the left of the Eden Door. Once you enter, a prompt asks you if you want to continue. Should you say yes, Quest 1 begins. You need to get to the city, through the sewer lines that are now flooded with dark water, dark crabs, crystals. Once you reach a free porthole, you will encounter the Season Guide who resides in a hidden corner, protected from rocks and rain.

Quest 2 is simple; find the spirits and bring them to the area with the SG. The locations are different that their normal ones, and easier to reach. It's similar to the cheering up quest from Performance and Remembrance, where you hold the spirits and guide them around. But you gotta remember! You're in Eden! It's gonna be hard. Crabs everywhere, most of them the red shard type, dangerous water, and a single Krill all stand in your way. You can recharge your light with the spirits and sconces scattered about, but getting knocked down makes you lose your grip on the spirits, scattering them away from you (not too far away though you don't have to restart the quest! I'm not a monster)

Quest 3; comfort the spirits. This is done by burning away dark plants, getting rid of normal crabs, lighting some fires for them, and an occasional music bit. Nothing too out of the ordinary.

Quest 4; this one is attempting to take the spirits out of the city now. You need to find a new tunnel, as the one you came through in Q1 is blocked by boulders (sorry lol). Same mechanic as Q3, just a bit longer. Quest is finished once you get everyone inside the tunnel.

Quest 5; I uh honestly haven't had any ideas for this. Been mulling it over and I have thought of the Season Guide sacrificing themselves.... idk, it's late and I need some rest.

Foreboding Steamboat (Murders at Karlov Manor Commander No. 28, Illus. Josu Solano)

Murders at Karlov Manor is fully spoiled, and the big-format JPGs and PNGs are rolling in! I think I'm going to make a Top 10 post and a post on my general feelings about the set, but for now let's look at some individual pieces.

Is full of references to classic murder mysteries, and Foreboding Steamboat is obviously representing Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Mississippi." I'm feeling very ambivalent on the high number of references in this set, but this is one that I like. Not because of the reference, but because of the artwork and how it fits in the setting. By which I mean - it doesn't. A steamboat doesn't really fit on Ravnica. But in this case, the illustration exudes the kind of enjoyable weirdness that was also present in some older Magic sets.

From a marketing standpoint, the Dimir are a bit of a pain in the neck. For a brief period after the original Ravnica block, they got a bit less secretive, becoming librarians, information industry workers, etc. But in MKM, after the Phyrexian invasion, they're back to being "the guild that doesn't exist." The problem is, in visual terms, WotC wants strong "branding" so that the players can identify more easily with their guilds. That usually means guild symbols and motifs being plastered everywhere. But that's not exactly what a secretive guild like the Dimir would do...

There are no obvious Dimir guild logos to be found on Foreboding Steamboat, but small hints like the flecks of blue light over the water or blue streaks in the smoke hint at it being at least affiliated with the guild. I imagine that in-universe, no one really knows why such a boat exists and who runs it. There are no registration papers, no official owners. It just appears every now and then, and suddenly, certain people feel strangely compelled to go on a boat cruise on Ravnica's canals. Before the Azorius or the Boros can do anything, the boat disappears again, just like the people that went aboard. For me, it almost feels more like a supernatural horror thing than a murder mystery thing.

Because MKM is a backdrop set (and is more about the "murder mystery" gimmick than the guilds), it remains to be seen where WotC will go with the Dimir. I hope they don't go back to "actually they have an overt arm that's managing libraries," because that would basically invalidate what they did with them in this set. But until then, we can only wait.

this is seriously such a problem. like, when i was in school during the beginning of the tech introduction, we has an entire class (usually taught by the librarian or something) that was just understanding the basics of computers. Typing, word formatting, fuckin KIDPIX art software.

now we seem to have done away with a "computer class" based on kids already being familiar with technology. like, sure, great, im familiar with radio, that doesnt mean i have amy idea how it works!

like, we are at a point where my kid brothers spend most of thier day on the computer, looking at dnd stuff and watching youtube videos all day, but when they want to find something specific, they dont know how. i have to explain typing a query into the search bar for them. they want to make a dnd character and dont know how to search for wizard spells. "did you try googling "wizard spells"?" "no" "okay well maybe try that". and then i watch them type the most hyper descriptive yet somehow entirely nonspecific search query that fails to find what theyre asking for, both because its a bad search term, but also because GOOGLE IS NEXT TO USELESS THESE DAYS. like, they (the kids) dont even have the concept of how google works anymore. how typing specific words as search terms will impact your search results and you need to know what words to use to get what youre looking for.

back to the dnd example, while trying to build a wizard character, they search for "wizard fire spells" and are met with a list of results ranging from dnd editions 1-5, to ancient world wizard texts, to pngs of a fireball. i then tell them to type "5e wizard spells" and we get exactly where were trying to go. but the children dont understand why. they dont get why my search worked and theirs didnt. "i used a different search term" i say, "but its the same as what i looked up!" they whine. but it isnt! its not the same because words mean things and were not even bothering to teach our kids that anymore. "wizard fire spells" lacks any way to specify what kind of wizard youre looking for, what context youre seeking their spell list. meanwhile, "5e wizard spells" specifies "5e", which the internet recognizes as shorthand for DnD 5th Edition, which then contextualizes the rest of the query.

alright, that was a bit of a ramble, all to say wE ARE failing our kids, we ARE failing to educate them in any way that matters. we dont teach our kids to open their minds to the world around them, we are teaching them for the sake of numbers, for the sake of saying we have the highest literacy rate in the world, for the sake of some board of directors paychecks.

schools dont teach our kids to learn, but to comply. they teach them to do as many multiplication problems as possible within 5 minutes, but not any applied reality where rapid mental multiplication may be necessary. (and then they yell at you in high school for not showing your work, as if they didnt just spend the previous several years drilling rapid mental mathematics into your head)

seriously, though. i work in higher education, and part of my job is students sending me transcripts. you'd think the ones who have the least idea how to actually do that would be the older ones, and while sure, they definitely struggle with it, i see it most with the younger students. the teens to early 20s crowd.

very, astonishingly often, they don't know how to work with .pdf documents. i get garbage phone screenshots, sometimes inserted into an excel or word file for who knows what reason, but most often it's just a raw .jpg or other image file.

they definitely either don't know how to use a scanner, don't have access to one, or don't even know where they might go for that (staples and other office supply stores sometimes still have these services, but public libraries always have your back, kids.) so when they have a paper transcript and need to send me a copy electronically, it's just terrible photos at bad angles full of thumbs and text-obscuring shadows.

mind bogglingly frequently, i get cell phone photos of computer screens. they don't know how to take a screenshot on a computer. they don't know the function of the Print Screen button on the keyboard. they don't know how to right click a web page, hit "print", and choose "save as PDF" to produce a full and unbroken capture of the entirety of a webpage.

sometimes they'll just copy the text of a transcript and paste it right into the message of an email. that's if they figure out the difference between the body text portion of the email and the subject line, because quite frankly they often don't.

these are people who in most cases have done at least some college work already, but they have absolutely no clue how to utilize the attachment function in an email, and for some reason they don't consider they could google very quickly for instructions or even videos.

i am not taking a shit on gen z/gen alpha here, i'm really not.

what i am is aghast that they've been so massively failed on so many levels. the education system assumed they were "native" to technology and needed to be taught nothing. their parents assumed the same, or assumed the schools would teach them, or don't know how themselves and are too intimidated to figure it out and teach their kids these skills at home.

they spend hours a day on instagram and tiktok and youtube and etc, so they surely know (this is ridiculous to assume!!!) how to draft a formal email and format the text and what part goes where and what all those damn little symbols means, right? SURELY they're already familiar with every file type under the sun and know how to make use of whatever's salient in a pinch, right???

THEY MUST CERTAINLY know, innately, as one knows how to inhale, how to type in business formatting and formal communication style, how to present themselves in a way that gets them taken seriously by formal institutions, how to appear and be competent in basic/standard digital skills. SURELY. Of course. RIGHT!!!!

it's MADDENING, it's insane, and it's frustrating from the receiving end, but even more frustrating knowing they're stumbling blind out there in the digital spaces of grown-up matters, being dismissed, being considered less intelligent, being talked down to, because every adult and system responsible for them just

ASSUMED they should "just know" or "just figure out" these important things no one ever bothered to teach them, or half the time even introduce the concepts of before asking them to do it, on the spot, with high educational or professional stakes.

kids shouldn't have to supplement their own education like this and get sneered and scoffed at if they don't.

okay I'll run through these:

there are 3 main ways for devices to be connected. Bluetooth - with this two devices send signals directly to each other. LAN - two devices talk to a shared router, which is a device designed just to be really good at sending and receiving signals. it's like using a guy who's got really good hearing and has a megaphone to relay your message so you can talk to your friend from further away - also he can help manage more devices because his whole job is keeping all the messages in order (his name is WIFI and you and your friend gotta connect to the same one to communicate this way) - then there's the internet, which is like a bunch of guys with good hearing and megaphones which can also talk to each other to send a message as far as they want. lots of devices use their own special code computers need to know to communicate with them, especially printers, this is done by getting the right driver, which should automatically happen but is sometimes a pain but usually doable by searching (the name of the printer) driver for (your computer). Printers are evil and you should ask a librarian for help.

files are any kind of information on the computer, when a file has instructions for a thing to do, like run a video game or calculator, it's a program, otherwise it's just a data file, like an image or audio which stores unchanging information.

Since computers deep down store 1s and 0s you need some kind of method to store information like text or an image, but there's a lot of different ways of turning text into 0s and 1s, so you need a file type to tell the computer which method you used to write letters or images as 1s and 0s. luckily there are websites where you can easily convert between different file types, like an automatic translation thing. works on phones or computers, just search ".jiff to .png" or whatever you need and select an online converter.

the location is just for helping you keep track of your files, since if they were just all in one place and you have thousands it's harder to find it.

computers are yes connected in a network, but generally don't share your information so random people don't get your private information, so you have to specifically choose to send information to another computer, and email does all the connecting computers and making sure other computers don't steal the information for you, for free and easier than alternatives.
