J.T. and Liberty's love story was so fucking tragic.

Liberty had a crush on this guy for four years. Four fucking years.

He finally returns her feelings. She kisses him. He kisses her back. They are finally together. Things are how it should be. And then things start to go bad.

He gets her pregnant. She thinks he's too immature and he thinks she's too controlling so they break up, but he still wants to be there for her and the baby.

They get back together.

They want to move in together, but they can't afford it.

J.T. steals drugs from the pharmacy, he works at and sells them. Liberty finds out. She isn't happy about it.

J.T. is stressed out about losing her trust, his best friend, his family, and his job. He overdoses and almost dies.

Liberty tells him she's putting the baby up for adoption.

They stop talking.

J.T. meets someone else and starts to date this new girl to get over Liberty, not knowing she also still has feelings for him.

Liberty tells him she loves him. He said he has a girlfriend. She asks him if he loves his girlfriend and he says yes, but he's lying.

She leaves.

After talking to his best friend, J.T. realizes he misses Liberty and that he still loves her and she is who he wants to be with.

He goes to do exactly that and he gets stabbed in the back. Literally.

Liberty finds him and yells for help.

He dies.

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

What was the fucking point in all of this? He didn't have to die! His death was so fucking unnecessary! Him and Liberty should have ended up together and be happy together! They did not deserve this!

Whenever I hear or see takes about how Liberty Van Zandt treated other characters “terribly” or how “she thought she was better than everyone”, I have to bitterly laugh because on every Degrassi rewatch I notice more and more how nearly every character looked down on her, treated her like she was the plague, and just made her the butt of every joke even during moments where she did nothing wrong. She was always the outcast, the freak, the back up love interest to her peers yet she still carried the school on her back. The Degrassi fandom hates her for not always being nice to their precious favs but ignore how their favs never respected unless it was time to get something out of it.

Liberty Van Zandt is the fictional representation of how much the world demands from black girls but do nothing for us when we need it.
