The 2021 Lexus RX 450h F Sport hybrid crossover is sinuous, frugal and impressively quiet — exactly what I want in a luxury vehicle. There is, however, one aspect of this Lexus that’s unforgivable, a mortal sin that drags down an otherwise pleasant vehicle: the infotainment system.

The bad news is the Black Line Special Edition package is limited to just 750 gas-powered RXs and 250 hybrid models.
The Lexus RX’s styling is certainly aggressive, with its comically large grille, angular headlamps and chiseled surfacing, but its interior is much more restrained and pleasant. The cabin’s quality is stellar and its materials are generally very good. The headliner and roof pillars are wrapped in a flannel-like fabric, soft plastics are used liberally throughout and nearly all the switches and knobs feel slickly lubricated. Sure, you’ll find a smattering of Toyota-sourced buttons here and there; stuff you get in, say, a Camry, but these carryover controls are well hidden and hardly objectionable.
Just behind this Lexus’ unusually deep dashboard, the front bucket chairs are all-day comfortable and attractive, rendered in black and white with contrasting blue stitching, a combo that’s also part of the Black Line Special Edition package. Storage space up front is good, consisting of a decently sized bin under the center armrest, a few other small cubbies on the console and generously proportioned front door pockets that pop outward when you pull on them. Moving rearward, the RX’s backseat is nearly sprawl-out spacious, with plenty of legroom and a decent amount of noggin space. Comfortable cushions provide great support, with the lower one being a nice distance above the floor for a chair-like seating position. Providing easy access, this Lexus’ rear doors open nice and wide.
But now for some bad news. If there’s a worse infotainment system than what’s offered in this Lexus, I’m not aware of it. With a bewildering user interface as well as a clunky and difficult-to-use control pad on the console, this multimedia system is half laptop, half low-end Android tablet and all kinds of terrible. Not only is the menu structure confusing, the track pad you use to navigate through it is kludgy, making even simple tasks a distracting chore. Rubbing salt in the wound, this RX 450h is also fitted with the top-shelf 12.3-inch screen (an 8-incher is standard), which is bundled in a $3,365 options package, so you’re paying thousands more for an awful experience. At least that outlay also gets you embedded navigation and a superb Mark Levinson sound system that makes even highly compressed MP3s and muddy satellite radio come alive. While a bit of a reach, the RX’s infotainment screen is touch-enabled, so you can skip the trackpad, but only if your arms are lanky enough. Thankfully, this system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (as well as Amazon Alexa), so you don’t have to use the infotainment system any longer than it takes to plug your phone in. The vehicle’s six USB ports ensure everyone’s mobile devices are fully juiced; a wireless charging pad is also available.
The RX’s interior is extremely well built and refined, though its infotainment tech leaves much to be desired.

The Lexus RX was updated in 2020, gaining a stiffened structure and revised suspension for better handling. This year, the vehicle gains some new technology, including blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, both of which are now standard across the range. Auto-dimming, power-folding mirrors are included at no extra charge, too, as is Lexus Safety System Plus 2.0, a suite of driver aids that includes daytime cyclist detection, low-light pedestrian detection, road sign recognition and lane-keeping assist. Thankfully, I have not had an opportunity to test the pedestrian-detecting systems, but the lane-keeping aid is gentle yet quite effective.
Underway, the RX 450h is one smooth operator. Whether you’re traversing frost-heaved highways, tiptoeing along a cratered dirt road or just cruising around your subdivision, this Lexus’ ride is always sinuous. Even rolling on 20-inch wheels, small expansion joints barely register and larger impacts are easily deflected, all with no harshness or gritty vibration percolating through to the passenger compartment. Despite its smooth ride, the RX 450h’s body is decently controlled. Sure, it could feel a bit tighter in corners and it might be nice if the steering were quicker and heftier, but the whole chassis feels so well balanced that these changes aren’t necessary, plus they might ruin the fluffy ride, which would be a shame.
Refined, punchy and economical, there’s little to complain about regarding the RX 450h’s powertrain.

Matching its over-the-road refinement, the RX’s cabin remains incredibly silent, quieter than naptime in a nursing home, with almost no wind, tire or engine noise being heard. The RX 450h’s hybrid powertrain is built around a 3.5-liter V6, one augmented by two electric motor-generators up front that form a continuously variable transmission, and a separate motor at the rear, which provides all-wheel drive. Whispering while it works, this arrangement provides a net 308 horsepower, though a torque figure is not listed because the math with hybrids is weird. On its own, however, the V6 engine whips up 247 pound-feet of twist. The RX 450h’s easy handling and all-wheel drive add immensely to my confidence one day as the weather goes from drab to dangerous, with a winter storm dumping sleet on the roadways.
Stand on the accelerator and this Lexus scoots. Performance, while not awe-inspiring, is still very good, the engine sounding like it’s operating far off in the distance rather than a few inches ahead of your toes. The hybrid parts of this drivetrain are similarly polished, barely drawing any attention to themselves. The brake pedal is also friendly, with a seamless transition between regenerative and friction braking. For added versatility, the RX 450h offers an EV mode, which allows you to run it solely on electrons. The onboard battery pack has enough juice for you to sneak down a cul-du-sac or into the garage without running the engine, but as soon as you go too fast or prod the throttle too aggressively the engine fires up. Remember, this is not a plug-in hybrid, so electric-only range is not the primary focus.
Cutting fuel consumption, however, is one of this Lexus’ main objectives. Expect 31 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on highway drives. In mixed use, the RX 450h should return 30 mpg, however, in the real world I only average around 25.1, a disappointing score. It’s typically a breeze to meet or even exceed advertised fuel-economy scores in Toyota hybrids, which makes this performance (or lack thereof) a bit of a surprise.
The Lexus RX is something of a mixed bag.

With its upscale interior, refined manners and, yes, unfortunate infotainment tech, a base 2021 Lexus RX 450h starts at just shy of $49,000, including $1,025 in destination fees. That’s about $2,650 more than an entry-level, front-wheel-drive, non-hybrid RX 350. As it sits, this F Sport example checks out for $59,380, a figure goosed by a few add-ons like a $200 wireless charger, $640 heated and ventilated front seats, $1,365 for parking assist and a 360-degree camera system, plus a few additional goodies. Still, that outlay gets you a family-friendly vehicle that’s more docile and refined than the sportier Acura MDX and, thanks to its aggressive styling (which you may or may not love), more visually interesting than a Lincoln Nautilus or Mercedes-Benz GLC.
There’s an abundance of luxury crossovers available today, great examples from German, American and Asian automakers. Plenty of them offer upscale interiors and loads of fancy features, but few are as refined, fuel efficient — and in one particular way — frustrating as this mostly likable Lexus.

Da Uber a Google, da Tesla ad Audi. Se i livelli 1 e 2 (se non sapete cosa sono i livelli, vi invito a leggere il precedente articolo) sembrano ormai acquisiti anche su vetture economiche, i primi sistemi di livello 3 sono comparsi quest’anno sulle vetture di alta gamma. Sono previsti per il 2021 le prime vetture che monteranno sistemi di livello 4, seppur a livello parziale.
Una corsa, quella alla guida autonoma, che dipende ovviamente dalle legislazioni locali e per la quale non esiste un ambiente migliore di un altro.
A che punto è lo sviluppo della tecnologia?
Si tratta di un sistema tecnologico complesso, composto a sua volta da tecnologie molto differenti che devono lavorare bene insieme. Ci sono già diverse applicazioni in fase avanzata, a partire dai software e dai sensori che già vengono utilizzati in ambito automobilistico per l’assistenza alla guida ma affinché questa tecnologia diventi pervasiva, invece, bisognerà aspettare almeno un decennio.
Quali sono le principali criticità dello sviluppo tecnologico?
Per gli aspetti tecnologici, invece, una parte critica è l’interazione con l’essere umano. I veicoli a guida autonoma devono essere in grado di predire in maniera probabilistica i comportamenti di un altro essere umano (automobilisti, pedoni e ciclisti ) e usare questa informazione per prendere decisioni e anticipare possibili azioni altrui. Quando guidiamo negoziamo costantemente le nostre azioni con gli altri, per un robot si tratta di un compito molto complesso che richiede sistemi decisionali avanzati di intelligenza artificiale, infatti le aziende stanno cercando di sviluppare algoritmi in grado di prevedere i comportamenti umani, in maniera probabilistica, attraverso un percorso di apprendimento basato sull’esperienza.
Nonostante queste criticità esiste un vantaggio, a differenza degli esseri umani, le macchine possono condividere immediatamente fra di loro l’apprendimento. Per cui l’apprendimento realizzato da un veicolo può estendersi a tutti i mezzi in circolazione.

Un gruppo di ricercatori del MIT di Boston ha sviluppato un algoritmo che un giorno potrebbe consentire alle auto a guida autonoma di prevedere i comportamenti degli automobilisti umani.
Le auto autonome imparano a guidare come l'uomo: osservano l'ambiente in cui si trovano e il comportamento degli altri per apprendere dall'esperienza. In questo modo diventano più sicure, l’algoritmo è pubblicato sul sito arXiv e presentato a Madrid, alla conferenza internazionale su sistemi e robot intelligenti.
Generalmente i robot si muovono grazie ad algoritmi che creano un albero di possibili percorsi, che si dirama fino a trovare quello migliore. Uno svantaggio, tuttavia, è che le macchine non possono sfruttare le informazioni su come si sono comportate in precedenza in ambienti simili. In pratica la millesima volta che il robot attraversa la stessa stanza è complicata come la prima volta.
Il punto di partenza per risolvere il problema è stato un algoritmo per il controllo del movimento, realizzato in precedenza sempre nel Mit, combinato con una rete neurale che impara dall'esperienza. Si sono ottenute in questo modo auto autonome capaci di muoversi in un ambiente come fa l'uomo,ossia basandosi sulle esperienze precedenti e in grado di riconoscere eventuali ostacoli o pedoni da evitare osservando il comportamento delle altre automobili.

Autopilot di Tesla
Tesla detiene uno dei sistemi più evoluti per la guida autonoma, ma come funziona l’autopilot di Tesla?
L'Autopilot è composto da una rete neurale (in estrema sintesi un sistema artificiale che simula il comportamento di un cervello umano, almeno nelle logiche di funzionamento di base) che a sua volta sfrutta 48 reti diverse in grado di elaborare le immagini e i dati raccolti da telecamere e sensori ben 2.300 volte al secondo. E ogni volta è in grado di calcolare 1.000 distinte variabili di quello che potrebbe accadere nell'immediato.
Per riuscire a fare tutto questo, l’autopilot è dotato di un radar frontale, 8 telecamere, un sonar a 360° e un Gps:
- 1 radar che riesce ad individuare oggetti presenti davanti al veicolo distanti anche 160 metri e li "vede" anche attraverso nebbia o polvere.
- 1 telecamera principale sul fronte, che arriva a 250 metri ma con un angolo di visuale molto stretto.
- 3 telecamere sul fronte che arrivano a distanze minori (150, 80 e 60 metri) ma con una visione grandangolare dell'ambiente circostante all'auto e sono quelle preposte a leggere i cartelli stradali.
- 4 telecamere rivolte verso i lati e il posteriore dell'auto e vedono fino a 100 metri di distanza.
- 1 sonar attraverso gli ultrasuoni, individua gli ostacoli presenti all'interno di un raggio di 8 metri intorno alla vettura. Funziona a qualsiasi velocità e controlla anche l'angolo cieco. I dati raccolti dal sonar sono utilizzati dall'Autopilot anche per gestire il cambio automatico di corsia durante un sorpasso.
- 1 Gps che serve per individuare la posizione dell'auto rispetto alla strada.

2020 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h Review: Pura Vida
When I first landed in Liberia, Costa Rica, to drive the updated 2020 Lexus RX, I wasn’t sure why the Japanese luxury brand had flown me and other journalists to Central America. About 40 minutes from the Liberia airport on the Pacific coast, the Papagayo Peninsula—with its stunning landscape, crystal-clear water, and white-sand beaches—was where we immersed ourselves in the Lexus world. The brand is celebrating its 30th anniversary and chose Costa Rica not only because of its stunning roads and natural splendor but also because of its deep connection with Purdy Motor, Toyota’s exclusive distributor in the country. Costa Rica was Lexus’ fifth Latin American market, and it has seen consistent growth since it began operations in 2013. Lexus’ first worldwide market was the U.S., and today the luxury brand continues its expansion across the globe with plans to launch in Mexico in 2021. It will have a presence in 90 countries by then. It’s within this landscape—both literally and metaphorically—that we drove Lexus’ most popular model, which is getting a midcycle refresh for the 2020 model year. Most of the changes are inside, where the crossover received a touchscreen, a few updates to its infotainment system, and six USB ports. Buyers can choose between the standard 8.0-inch or the available 12.3-inch touchscreen; the latter can be had as a split screen and has a higher resolution than the smaller screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa are compatible with the updated RX, and we found it very easy to use CarPlay through the touchpad. Although the touch functionality is new, the screen is a bit hard to reach for the driver given its location on top of the dash; it’s pretty easy to control from the front passenger’s seat, though. Despite the busy design, the RX’s interior is a nice place to sit. The seats are comfortable, and materials feel soft everywhere you touch. The commanding driver’s seat position provides good visibility.
The bigger three-row RX L continues for 2020 with second-row captain’s chairs that ease entry and exit for third-row passengers. The exterior updates are subtle: The iconic spindle grille is now bigger, the front and rear fascias have been redesigned, and the triple-beam LED headlights are slimmer. The standard 18-inch wheels sport a new design, and the 20-inch wheels on the Luxury trim have also received a style update. Things remain the same under the hood, but according to Lexus, changes to the suspension and welding have increased the vehicle’s rigidity. The shocks have been retuned, the anti-roll bars were swapped for stiffer ones, and the dampers were updated to provide a smoother ride. The RX 350 is still powered by a 295-hp, 267-lb-ft 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is still an option for the gas-only model; the unit we drove in the twisty, hilly roads overlooking the jaw-dropping Culebra Bay was fully loaded. The engine delivers enough power for an SUV of this size, but the transmission was always hunting for the highest gear. Thankfully, paddle shifters are standard for 2020, so the transmission holds gears longer when the shifter is in its sport position. The shifts are smooth, and body roll is controlled well, but we’ll need to spend more time with it to give you a full report.
During our drive we also got behind the wheel of the RX 450h, which is still propelled by the 3.5-liter V-6 mated to an electric motor and a CVT that sends power to all four wheels. The 308 hp make a huge difference compared with the “regular” engine—we found the hybrid to be more energetic. Whether we were driving up steep hills or taking sharp corners, the RX 450h was more fun to drive. It also felt agile when we stepped on the gas and happily passed slower cars on the two-lane road. After this short drive, we’d definitely go with the hybrid. We’ll get you deeper driving impressions once we have a chance to spend more time with it. The F Sport package continues for 2020, and now it can be split into two. The top-of-the-line F Sport Performance package adds the active variable suspension from the Lexus LC, as well as a cold air intake, active sound control, electric power steering, and a heated steering wheel. The standard F Sport package comes with sportier dampers and a drive mode selector with Sport+. The RX F Sport also offers red leather seats, more bolstering, and an F Sport badge on the wheel. Another update for 2020 is the addition of Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, which is now standard across the board. Thanks to the changes in the pre-collision system, every RX can now detect cyclists during the day and pedestrians at night, something new for this model year. Road Sign Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are also new, but the Tico roads we drove on didn’t have any lane marks, so we couldn’t really try this feature.
Lexus hasn’t announced pricing, but expect to pay about the same as the 2019 Lexus RX 350, which starts at $44,845. The Lexus RX won our very first SUV of the Year award back in 1999, and it’s a pioneer in the crossover segment, becoming the first unibody SUV that delivered a “carlike” ride with the seating position and interior space of an SUV. Since then, it has thrived in the segment, becoming Lexus’ most popular model by far, surpassing all of the brand’s sedan sales combined. With its updated styling, better technology, advanced safety, and Pura Vida attitude, the 2020 Lexus RX will continue to be the brand’s sales leader when it arrives at dealers at the end of August. This much-needed update will bring a breeze of fresh air to the crossover.
