Opposites Attack: 2024 Honda Passport TrailSport, 2024 Lexus LC 500 Convertible
Our two test vehicles this week couldn’t be more different. The 2024 Honda Passport TrailSport is the brand’s latest effort to cash in on the current off-road craze that continues to sweep the nation. With all-terrain tires, a trick torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system and some appearance mods, the Passport TrailSport isn’t just fun to say; it is also fun to drive. But will it do the job…

2023 Lexus LC 500 convertible
Beauty, they name is Lexus LC 500! But there's power and luxury galore to go alone with the stunning looks!
Luxury Convertible’s gutsy V8, drop-top are smooth operators … Last time I drove the stunning Lexus LC 500 convertible I quoted Voltaire saying we must feel and be affected by beauty, not just see it. I don’t quote Voltaire often! But I’ve become spoiled by such luxury when it arrives in my driveway. Yet who among us doesn’t enjoy being mollycoddled by a tarty sportster? Bathed in a classy…

man i really wish i loved the way the LC-500 looks…
it's objectively a very good car - it's comfortable, it has a beautiful interior (that i totally didn't copy for one of my automation cars) and it has a Lexus V8 (!) but the exterior proportions are just a bit wonky
the hood line there slopes down a bit too much before leading into the grill, leading to it having that sort of "pod vehicle" vibe about it.
it's particularly egregious with the front 3/4 view
note here how the ass end slopes down severely from the c pillar, giving it a "weak" stature. the way i'd personally fix these shortcomings would be to lower the height of the hood on the a pillar to shallow (is shallow a verb? i looked it up and google says it is, so i will use it like that) the hood angle, and beef up the rear haunches to give it a more aggressive stance.
these are still relatively small visual shortcomings with an otherwise very well designed car, and the LC-500 is absolutely within my top 15 or so cars to buy if i had 100 grand to blow.
god that interior looks fucking beautiful
OMG I'm such a dumbass I knew you did one on the GR Yaris before too, and I love her ALSO, but I actually meant the GR Supra 😳🫣 (slip of the tongue)
Gotcha.
Since I managed to take some two weeks to answer this (got distracted both by real life obligations and other posts that were meant to be very quick to make. Meant to.) y'all may have forgotten, but our dear friend of the blog had asked for opinions on the GR Yaris, hinting to its controversial status. Turns out the GR Supra is what that request, and thus that hint, was actually about - so let's talk about the car and the controversy that engulfs it.
In 1993, Toyota launched the fourth generation of its rear wheel drive sportscar (well, arguably a bit of a Grand Tourer, i.e. something more oriented to cruising than a sportscar) the Supra - which was born a quarter century earlier as a more upmarket, six cylinder version of the Celica, graduating from Celica Supra to its own dignified name with the third generation I talked about that one time I forgot to check what blog I was reblogging with.
But this time, things would be different. Most notably because the inline six the Mk4 Supra came out with was an absolute MONSTER.
Remember how I talked about the GT-R's RB26 engine being one of the greatest, most coveted production engines to ever come out of Japan? Well, the 2JZ-GTE is the other.
It was larger at 3 liters, no less powerful, and to reduce turbocharger lag it used two of them sequentially: first air goes in the smaller, more responsive turbo, then gradually some of it gets sent to the bigger turbo to make it start spinning, then when it gets going the two are finally used in conjunction. (Imagine the big turbo as a hung husband that takes a while to get it up and the small turbo as an eager stepson ready to take over until the hung one can join in for a spitroast. Or something. I don't watch porn with real people, but from what I gather the plots seem to resemble how sequential turbos work.) It even at one point got Variable Valve Timing, i.e. the ability to vary the time in which the valves open depending on engine speed, which allows to optimize tuning for performance and efficiency! (Cool thing to go over in detail if y'all want me to.) And also, the kind of things that engine is able to take make me wish I hadn't used up my porn analogy quota.
See, to chop off eons of nuance, an engine is just a big block of metal with a lot of bits attached, and the two main measures of an engine's potential are the slope of the line in the Bits Fiddled With / Power Output graph and how far up (It's up, right? The second axis you specify is the vertical one, right?) you can take it before the block becomes the weakest link - with another important point being when you need to start messing with internals, i.e. the components inside the engine, e.g. pistons (the things the boom pushes down), camshaft (the thing the pistons spin) and connecting rods (you can guess).
So for instance, just to make the point that an engine can be beloved without having much overall tuning potential, in one of Toyota's most beloved engines, the 4A-GE four cylinder illustrated above (yes, the one from that white and black car in all the eurobeat videos), some pin the block's limit as low as 250hp. The 2JZ, tho? It can take 800hp without even messing with the internals, and once you get your grubby hands on those you can keep pushing the line to some 2000hp. That is two Bugattis. That is 40 times my car. That is well above the power level where "tires that will at any point grip" and "tires that are in any way road legal" stop intersecting.
I am not in the slightest exaggerating when I say that this and the Skyline GT-R are widely regarded as the top of Japan's 20th century automotive production. The Messi & Ronaldo of the Japanese Domestic Market. It is absolutely no coincidence this was the hero car in The Fast And The Furious.
And then in 2002, as all things, its production ended, and given the abysmal sales and catastrophic recession, Toyota decided that would be that.
And then, years later, The Teasening began.
I want to stress, almost half of my conscious life (I choose to believe the stretch from birth to kindergarten is just run-up) the world was in some state of getting teased with talk of a new Supra. The trademark on the name was renewed in 2010. In 2014 they dropped the FT-1 concept, and of course that became speculation about what the production version would look like.
Because come the fuck on, it's not gonna look like that.
Or was it?
Only five entire years and much more teasing later would we officially get an answer, when after seventeen years, the Toyota GR Supra (and for those wondering what GR means, y'all should've clicked the Yaris link >:C) hit the streets.
You know what, good enough.
Good enough to earn itself a sea of words of praise, Jason Cammisa's "The most punch-above-its-weight sportscar ever made" just some among them.
It did have its share of problems at the start, like its power being 335hp and not 382, a lack of manual transmission, and the inability to spec it with a less powerful 4 cylinder engine - well, I don't know who considered that last one a problem, but Toyota's updates solved that one too.
The Supra has a much bigger problem than those though, one no little update can solve. That red car in the background.
See, the new Supra is actually a joint venture with BMW, who made a new model of its Z4 roadster out of the platform. And unlike with the other joint-venture sportscar Toyota sells, people are big mad about that. Why?
See, the interior is engulfed in BMW switchgear and the drivetrain is all BMW (the manual gearbox took until this year to come out because BMW did not have one for that engine so Toyota had to modify another BMW transmission to fit), giving people the impression that this was less of a joint venture and more of a BMW project that Toyota tacked its design on top of, which is a problem whether true or not.
See, a range-topping sportscar is supposed to represent what the brand is capable of - having it done by someone else (or so the criticism goes) is a bit like performing Hallelujah in playback.
Actually, a better musical analogy: You know "I'm back bitch" singles? When a humongous artist drops a new record with a humongous lead single about absolutely nothing but reaffirming they're the biggest fucking deal in the universe? Without Me, Bad, Gimme More, so on. Well, think of SexyBack - one of the most monumental phenomenons of its decade, most incontrovertibly proving Justin Timberlake sat atop the goddamn world. Now, imagine if, after all the years that went by between that record and the next, when he finally came out with Suit And Tie all the verses were Jay-Z. Going from a humongous statement about having the power to reach the top of the game and stay there to having to get absolutely carried by what in this logic is essentially a competitor. Basically, that's the critics' complaint: the supra went from 2JZ to too much Jay-Z.
And therein lies the other problem of the Supra: the Supra.
See, any time you evaluate something, you do so relative to its context - and when you give it a nameplate, you make that context include where else that nameplate has been. An undeserved name may not just be stupid, but even outright kill the car in some's eyes, see the case of the Dodge Dart, or get me to talk about the Ford Capri prototype recently spotted if you want to find out what I'm like when I lose my cool. (I'd liken this phenomenon to undeserved Grammies but I already used my music analogy quota too.) So the Toyota Supra does not just need to be good, it needs to deserve the name. And some argue it doesn't. But why? This thing is no less powerful, no slower, hell it's not even any bigger or heavier and we've gone over how rare that is these days! So is it the lack of backseats and a targa version? No, no one gives a crap about those. It's something deeper.
Sometimes, the problem with a revival is people base their expectation not on what the original was like in the context of its time but what it's like in the context of today (for example, I've heard people call the latest GT-R "too computerized, too assisted, far from the pure driving experience of its predecessors", when its predecessors had some of the most technologically advanced driving assists of their time and could only be called "pure" and "analog" by comparison with cars decades newer). But of course, that'll only be some people - so if what the original car looks like to modern eyes and what the original car represented at its time are two different enough concepts, any revival will receive some criticism for not being one of the two.
But for the Supra, this compounds with another problem: the original Supra (as in the previous generation, since no one gives a crap about the first three), to modern eyes, looks like a thousand-horsepower flame-spitting beast, because that's what all Supras have been turned into, and that's why you know of Supras in the first place (it sure isn't because people bought it!), and that, consciously or not, exacerbates the problem of misplaced expectations to a level akin to hearing an NBA player is about to have a brother and expecting the baby to be a 6'4" three-shooter.
But I wasn't asked about the controversies, I was asked about my take. And my take is: no realistic expectation of what a Supra would look like today was disappointed - at least not by where the car stands today. Well, unless the expectation involved backseats.
"But it was made by BMW" and so? This is a new Supra, and a good one - what does it matter how it got here? Especially when this is an upgrade over the Z4 in every way - looks way better, drives better, and now has a manual that the Z4 doesn't.
Okay, almost every way: the Supra's roof won't get out of the way. If only though, if only. Could you imagine a Toyota product that looks this good, sounds this good, goes this fast, and has a drop top? ...and maybe backseats?
Well, I can.
Yes, the badge and core concept may have some people consider it from midlife crisis mobile to old man's car. (though we know it's not a car bought by old men because if that was the case someone would be buying these). But just try to imagine sitting in this thing.
Take a couple of seconds to take in that picture and truly immerse yourself. You're in a Lexus LC500 Convertible, with a V8 at your right foot's command, its spectacular sound ready to battle the perfect sound system serenading you with your fanciest CD, because of course Lexuses still come with CD players.
Are you immersed? Okay: Someone just called your Lexus a midlife crisis car. See? You don't give a shit either, do ya.
Automatic only though. The pain. Oh, and it kind of costs as much as two Supras. But, you know, neither of those Supras will be convertibles!

Better Together (Shuri x Reader)
You’d had enough. Without a word, you stood and retreated from the room of partygoers. You didn’t stop walking until the door was in front of you, your hand shaking as you unturned the knob and set yourself free. The sound of quick footsteps that followed were ignored by you.
“Y/N,” a voice called, slipping outside into the humidity with you before you could close the door. It was Shuri. Really, it should have been your girlfriend, not your girlfriend’s friend, that came to check on you.
Her eyes softly regarded you. She knew you were upset, and she couldn’t blame you. Still feeling not only irritated but embarrassed, you turned forward.
“Do you want me to take you home?”
Regretfully, you had ridden with your girlfriend in her car to the house party. You wished you’d taken your car instead.
“That’s sweet, but I don’t want to take you away from them,” You said, referring to her friends that were still most likely enjoying themselves inside. Including your girlfriend.
Shuri kissed her teeth, not the least bit worried about the party. “No, come on. I’ll take you home.” Her tone of voice and the look on her face indicated this was no longer an offer but an order. You metaphorically shrugged and took your place in the passenger’s seat of one of her favorite cars: the purple Lexus LC 500.
One of your new favorite songs played as the convertible got on the road. You sang along and even danced a little in your seat. A small smile rested on Shuri’s face. She cranked the volume and drove faster.
When the song finished, Shuri noticed you were ready to talk, so she lowered the volume.
“I’m not a jealous person,” You said. “I just don’t see why she has to obsess over this girl. There’s having a crush and there’s being disrespectful.” You glanced at Shuri who looked passive.
She caught your gaze. “I’m listening.”
“I knew when I met her that she liked her, and didn’t mind. But she’s doing too much. It’s like she wants to make me jealous. Always praising and drooling over her—in front of everyone, no less.”
Shuri now looked disgusted.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with your friend,” You finished.
“Neither do I.”
You had noticed that you weren’t near your house at all, though you didn’t mind. However, you were shocked to see you pull into Wakandaland.
Shuri parked the car and laughed softly at your reaction, completely focusing on you. “You forgive me, Y/N?”
You laughed. “You’re lucky I’m into rides.”
And ride you did. This outing brought out your inner child. It was nice to see Shuri having fun as well. She had shared that she was developing a new attraction to the park.
“Sssh, don’t tell anyone,” She’d told you when you were on a calmer ride that reminded you of the ferris wheel, but better. “It’s top secret.”
Your eyes widened. “That’s amazing, Shuri!”
She smiled hard, and you resisted the urge to kiss her cheek. “I know. I am a little nervous, but mostly excited.”
“Look at you, expanding your talents. You can do anything, girl. Anything you set your mind to.”
You didn’t dwell on her deep stare at the latter statement. It was enough to warm your body, though, you ignored it. You instead put your attention to your phone for the first time since you’d arrived. You sucked your teeth. “Can you believe she only called me once and didn’t even leave a voicemail or text?”
Realizing you were talking to yourself, your eyes darted around the park, seeing some families and couples, but no Shuri. As you walked around and got ready to contact her, you felt someone cover your eyes.
“Y/N Y/L/N?” If not for her poor attempt of disguising her voice, you would have screamed and jumped into action. She laughed when you swatted her, softly glaring at her.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.Does this make up for it?” She revealed a prize that she’d just won for you. Your face broke into a smile.
~~
The night came to an end. Or so it seemed as Shuri walked you to your door. Why did you feel nervous? You typically felt relaxed around Shuri. You didn’t know if it was because she was the one who always checked on you when your girlfriend acted out of line or because you were used to your girlfriend leaving Shuri to look after you.
In this moment you felt like someone who just went on a date and liked it. You wondered if Shuri would kiss you. A part of you felt like a school girl who wanted to replay your time together. The other part didn’t want it to end.
“Well, I hope you had fun, Y/N,” She said, clasping her hands in front of her. She looked at you genuinely. Her voice gave away that she was a little nervous. Was she feeling what you were feeling?
“I had a blast,” You said with a smile, feeling comfortable again. “Thank you for taking my mind off my joke of a relationship—once again.”
Shuri’s own smile faded. “I meant it earlier when I said I don’t know why she mistreats you. She’s so into that girl from social media that she fails to see what’s in front of her, and how lucky she is.”
Your eyes glimmered. “You would make a girl lucky, too.”
Her face lit up. “Yeah?”
“Of course! If I was a different kind of girl, I would’ve…let’s just say, I’ve been on my best behavior, especially when she makes it so easy to cheat with you.”
Shuri’s eyebrows went up and she smiled, stepping closer. “What are you saying?” You’d never seen her stare harder.
“No, I was just saying that she’s always leaving us together and you’re always cleaning up her mess, treating me the way she should be treating me…” You spoke a little too fast, your words running together. Shuri found it cute.
She licked her lips and stepped even closer, holding eye contact. “You know, I used to feel guilty for having certain thoughts about you. But we both know she doesn’t deserve you.”
Your heart could burst from all the butterflies. “What kind of—“
The loudness of a car door slamming shut interrupted you. You and Shuri whipped your heads to see your girlfriend approach your residence. You looked at Shuri whose visage turned firm.
“Were you about to kiss my girl?” Your girlfriend asked her.
You scoffed, “You have a lot of damn nerve.”
“Yeah, whatever. Unlock the door, will ya?”
You just scowled at her until you heard Shuri try to calm you with an “it’s okay.” Like magic, you felt relaxed again and opened your door. To your surprise your girlfriend didn’t follow you.
She confronted Shuri. “I think you’re taking this ‘look after Y/N’ thing a little too seriously, don’t you think?”
Shuri didn’t back down.“Then woman up and do your job.” Truthfully, she didn’t want that to happen. She wanted her to continue to screw up.
Girlfriend leaned back. “Letting that white horse, savior shit go to your head, huh?”
Shuri narrowed her eyes. “There is so much wrong with that statement, but for the sake of my time, I won’t even go there. Y/N has been putting up with your mess for too long. She’s over it, and so am I.”
“Oh, she’s over it, huh? Y/N, are you over it? Are you leaving me?” She called loudly, coming into the house.
“Do not taunt her!” Shuri said, following her.
You rolled your eyes as girlfriend tried to reach for you. “Yes, I am over it. Worry about Deleelah Joy.”
“That’s not fair, babe, she’s a celebrity—“
“You couldn’t even check on me and see if I was okay! I left your friends’ house and was gone for three hours and you only contacted me once! You do this all the time! I deserve better! The way you always leave me with Shuri, you must want me with her anyway!”
Shuri mean-mugged your girlfriend while your girlfriend frowned at your words. You refused to let her sadness affect you.
“All of this over a celebrity crush, babe?”
“Could you imagine if I always talked about Letitia Wright and bragged over how fine and smart and talented she is? How sexy she is? Always gushing over her and showing you her posts?”
“Letitia Wright…who’s Letitia Wright…oh, the one who looks like Shuri?”
Both of you looked at Shuri who was shaking her head to herself. You couldn’t help but smile and she mustered a soft smile of her own at you.
Your girlfriend noticed this connection you and Shuri seemed to share. The smile on your face was one she hadn’t seen in a while. It was rare and it was stunning. Now that she thought about it, you tended to look serious, annoyed, or tense when she was around you. You had stopped smiling at her the way you were smiling at Shuri.
“You do favor her, you know,” You mentioned, since it was brought up.
Her smile grew. “I will take that as a compliment.”
“You should.”
Damn, I can’t deny they look cute, Your girlfriend thought. She had some serious thinking or reflecting to do. Without a word, she took her leave. You and Shuri exchanged looks after watching her retreating frame. You heard the door close and you shrugged.
Shuri went over to you and pulled you into a hug. Sighing, you leaned into her warm embrace, engulfing her tall lithe frame.
“I think she knows we’d be better together,” Shuri said, working calm circles into your lower back and hip.
~~~
Months later
“Give me a kiss, usana.”
Your lips happily touched and moved together. Your bodies melded as you tasted each other’s mouthes and swallowed any sounds between you. The both of you were left a breathing mess. Shuri’s head tilted against the wall as her hands gripped your ass. You grinned to yourself at how aroused she was.
“We have to touch up our makeup, but it’s okay,” You said, laughing some. This was a big day for Shuri. She was moments away from giving an address about the new attractions to Wakandaland.
“I need you to calm me down, not heat me up,” Shuri joked.
“You’re gonna kill it, my love. Like always.”
“Do you remember when I told you about it?”
You playfully rolled your eyes. Shuri had become something of an old-timer when she would often recall sharing with you that she’d been developing something for Wakandaland and how that same day sealed your fate as a couple.
“Why you gotta hate on our history? That was an important day for us.”
You giggled at the language she chose and lifted her hand, kissing it. “I love that you find that day just as special as I do.”
What's your expensive dream car that you've always wanted to own. Forget the cost and the expenses. 🚦🚗 any features you would want to add or color you would want?
So, when I was younger I was in love with the lamborghini murcielago lp640. And if I had the money I would get one.
However I also ADORE all Lexus vehicles. The brand is incredible, reputable, reliable and their cars and comfortable and beautiful. If I could I would have one of each. But if I had to be limited, I would get an LC 500, and RC 500 and and RX 350. They are incredible.
Now for features. I really want a wood/leather steering wheel. Unfortunately they are on the older models and I don't believe they are available on any newer models. But if I could pay for one I would!
I’ve been working for Lexus for 7 years now and have seen the release of several new models. A particularly memorable year was 2018 when the all-new LC was released along with a totally redesigned LS. The LS is the flagship sedan, and the LC is a large luxury sport coupe. For the first time, the all-new LS 500 received a turbo 6-cylinder engine rather than the traditional V8 that had been used in the LS since its origination with the brand. The 2018 LS 500 received a boost of 25 horsepower over the outgoing 2017 model. Having driven both models I can be certain that the LS 500 is a superior driving machine and though the power boost on paper is less than ten percent the change in driving dynamic is profound.
Having spoken with many Lexus owners during ride-alongs and elsewhere I know that reliability is a particularly important selling point. Working as a technician I question if the reliability of the reliability of the three-and-a-half-liter twin turbo V6 is up to par with the outgoing V8. We have seen some issues with the new engine, but I would say that the failure rate is rather low and the 4.6 V8 was not without its issues, especially with over one hundred thousand miles. The original 4.0 and 4.3 V8 engines were the best that Lexus ever made and are arguably the most reliable engines of all time. In 2022 Lexus sold 2,679 LS 500 models in 2022. A rather pathetic figure when compared with RX sales, which topped 96,000 units in the same year.
The RX is Lexus’s bread and butter, in fact, it is the best-selling luxury car period. Not just the best-selling luxury SUV but the best-selling luxury vehicle across all model designations. For 2023 Lexus unveiled the all-new Lexus RX which for the first time received a turbo four-cylinder engine. I imagine you are seeing a trend at this point toward smaller cylinder counts, and Lexus is not alone in that trend. Government mandates and consumer demand have compelled manufacturers to turn out smaller more efficient engines. The challenge is to beat the power, reliability, and refinement of the larger motors. Lexus cannot simply match the outgoing engine they must surpass it even with the smaller cylinder count. Lexus’s first four-cylinder turbo motor was the two-liter 8AR-FTS. It debuted in the 2015 NX and 2016 IS, RC, and GS. This motor makes a poultry 241 HP in its most powerful form and response feels delayed especially in IS and RC models. The new 2.4 turbo motor in the 2023 RX does not suffer from this problem and manages to outperform the V6 in power, feel, and refinement.
