A Lewism means this is a phrase I made up.
The brown circles were made by dipping the bottom of my espresso cup in a bit of espresso poured into the saucer at some coffee house. I did this many times in journal entries . Kind of a spiritual tattoo.

I figured I should ask you this, since you’re The Monk Person on my dash.
Do you think it’s possible that monks’ tonsure was sort of meant to suggest, or mimic, a halo?
The question occurred to me because I made the connection from watching Janet Stephens’s (forensic hairdresser) YouTube videos—specifically, ones about the Ancient Roman “seni crines” hairstyle, and Empress Sabina’s “Diana” hairstyle.
To quickly explain wtf I’m talking about:
- The “seni crines” was the Vestal Virgins’ hairstyle. Lots of Roman women’s hairstyles borrowed aspects of it, probably as a deliberate homage.
- Sabina’s “Diana” hairdo is almost exactly the same as a statue of the goddess—the main difference being that Diana wears a pearled diadem, while Sabina’s “diadem” is made from her own hair.
Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
Hi! I am sorry for the late response. I'm actually not too sure. I read this article last year about tonsures:
Robert Mills, "The Signification of the Tonsure." In Holiness and Masculinity in the Middle Ages, edited by P. H. Cullum and Katherine J. Lewism, Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 2004.
However, it was in a physical book and I wasn't able to get it out of the library again.
Here is an excerpt from my dissertation on tonsure's significance:
Monastic gender presentation was also visually distinct from secular men. Jacqueline Murray argues ‘that male physical and emotional identity was linked to dress.’(1) Monks’ physical appearance displayed their monastic vocation through the wearing of habits, clean shaven faces, and tonsured scalps. Tonsures publicly announced a man had some sort of role in the Church as did the habit. Tonsures and clean shaven faces displayed their religious status. A hairy body demonstrated a man’s virility and masculinity.(2) By shaving their faces, monks deliberately took away a characteristic that physically distinguished them from secular men, instead taking on an appearance similar to prepubescent boys and women. Their lack of hair and choice of clothes were a constant reminder to all those around him, that the monk was stuck in an indefinite childhood and had an effeminate status.(3)
I think its possible there could have been some halo symbolism there? But I really can't remember I am afraid!

The illusion of impermanence
“12/6/21 Monday 7:34am
Home— “The illusion of impermanence Glazes the reality Of Infinity.”
A Lewism——
Arrived at— From a morning read note— “At 66 we are edgers—dancing on eternity’s edge.” This cold I have is Eternity breaking through the glaze. The end is coming.
11:40am Home again (from court) Learned in court today that a fellow criminal defense lawyer, Charles S., maybe age 55 and a nice guy, died of a heart attack in bed over the weekend. And eternity came through in a blinding flash. For a second, Impermanence lost its veneer. And we were face to face with the harsh thud of infinity. The meaning of what I had written earlier soared: “The illusion of impermanence… Dancing on eternity’s edge.”

[MF] Campfire Story
The setting sun had fallen behind the mountain but still cast an orange glow onto the clouds overhead and turned the fall leaves even more golden. The three friends had made camp in a clearing at the base of the mountain after a long day’s hike through the forest of the valley. Tomorrow they planned to make the final hike over the top and into the valley on the other side where they had started a week before. Tents were set up and a campfire made, which the three were gathered around finishing their evening meal of rehydrated hamburger goulash and steaming bowls of ramen mixed with instant potatoes.
“Pass me that bag of marshmallows again. There is no smell like that on Earth and the taste is so good I can't get enough,” said Nico placing his refilled stick back over the flames.
“Agreed!” said the other two, having saved this special treat for their last night on the trail.
The darkness was finally complete making the firelight seem brighter and somehow more mesmerizing.
“You know, what we need now is a good story to make this experience complete, just like the old trappers and pioneers used to do in the movies. Anyone got one to share?” Theo asked.
As the trio sat silently in thought, the forest around them seemed to be holding its breath in anticipation.
“My dad claims that his great-great-grandfather was one of those fur traders you mentioned. The story goes Jedediah once stayed with an Indian tribe for a couple of days while collecting his traps in the forests not far from here actually. There is one tale Jedediah heard from them memorable enough to pass it down. Let’s see if I can remember how my father told it to me...,” Connor finally said and paused to collect his thoughts before beginning.
The Story of the First Shaman
In the early days of the First People in this land, tribes were small and times were difficult. The land was rich in beauty and bounty, but it was also a treacherous and unforgiving place for the unwary and disrespectful, as it was for all creatures that dwelled here.
A young brave was out hunting one morning with his knife and spear, hoping to catch a rabbit for his family to eat that night. As he walked through the trees, he encountered a snake soaking in the warmth of the sun on a rock just off the trail. While it did not have much meat, he thought it might add to the night’s meal in case he didn’t find a rabbit.
“I know you must eat as do all creatures of the land, but if you spare me, I will give you knowledge that will help feed your people for generations,” the snake spoke as the brave raised his spear to kill it.
“How is it possible that I can understand you?” the brave asked, surprised that a snake could speak and none in his tribe had mentioned such a thing before.
“You are still young and not yet set in your ways, so your mind can still be taught things that are possible, not just things that already are," the snake replied as it flicked its tongue to taste the air.
“So what can I learn from you?” responded the brave now full of curiosity.
So the snake shared with him how to hunt the small creatures that dwelt on the ground and in burrows by moving silently like water and being patient before striking. The snake also gave him knowledge of poisons and medicines for its sense of smell was sensitive to the plants and things growing on the ground in the forest.
The brave thanked the snake and continued along the trail, pleased with how this knowledge would make his people better hunters and gatherers. He came to a clearing and saw an eagle perched on the top of a tall tree on the far edge of the clearing. Still in a state of wonderment from speaking with the snake, he decided to see if the eagle would also talk to him.
“Oh regal lord of the sky, I would learn from you if you are willing,“ he spoke beseechingly.
“What do you crave to know?” the eagle replied welcoming the respect and humbleness of the brave.
“I have not seen the world as you have, flying above the land like the clouds. I want to find the best hunting grounds, the nearest rivers, and to be more aware of life around me as I go through the forest. I want to see the world differently and learn my place in it," the young brave said in reply..
So the eagle shared these things with the brave, who now felt smaller in a bigger world, but happier because he saw how things worked together and better understood the role of his people in the land.
Still looking for a rabbit to feed his family, the brave continued through the forest. He stopped suddenly when he saw a rabbit sitting at the base of large tree. He raised his spear, but before he could throw it, a timber wolf that had been hidden in the brush nearby pounced, snapping the neck of the rabbit with its teeth in a single piercing bite.
“Please spare me O Mighty Hunter! I know you must eat as do all creatures of the land, but I do not want to die for I must feed my own family as you do," the brave blurted out, scared for his own life as the wolf dropped the rabbit that had been dangling from those terrible jaws onto the ground.
“You are the first among your people to talk to my kind rather than hunt us. We do not kill for sport or when there is no need. I will spare your life if you drop your spear so we can come to an understanding that you can share with your people which will benefit both our kind," he spoke to the brave in reply.
They both sat on the ground and talked as the sun made its way across the sky and after a time the brave felt that a true friendship between their kind might even be possible someday. The wolf taught him how to stay hidden when stalking prey, told him that hunting in packs would allow his people to catch animals bigger than one person could alone, and about the importance of consuming every part of the kill so nothing was wasted, thus honoring the life that had been taken. As a parting gesture, the wolf picked up the slain rabbit and dropped it at the feet of the brave before racing off into the forest.
With rabbit in hand, the brave returned to the camp of his tribe and told the elders as they sat around the campfire of the wonders he had experienced that day. He shared with them the things he had learned and his vision of how the First People were a part of a sacred circle of life, that all life in the land was precious and important to all other life around it. The elders asked him to be their knowledge seeker and gave him the title of shaman. From that day on, he adorned himself with reminders of the forest creatures and what they had shared with him: a carved totem of a snake coiled around a branch for the knowledge of plants and the medicines that could help his people, a feather from an eagle so he could see far and be reminded of his place in the land, and a pelt from a wolf over his head so he would be reminded to work together to achieve a goal as well as the importance of sharing all things. A small wolf pup he had found alone one day in the forest walked at his side, a faithful companion as he wandered the land seeking more knowledge to share with his people.
“Wow Connor, that was some tale,” his friends said when the story was finished, suddenly more aware of all the sounds in the forest outside the circle of the light cast by the fire but feeling at peace rather than fearful.
"Do you have any more tales like that?" Theo asked.
"Maybe, but you'll have to wait until our next outing," he replied with a smile and changed the conversation to the trail they wanted to take the next morning.
As the fire died out and the friends went to their tents, each was deep in thought knowing that every camping trip they took from now on would not, could not, ever be the same.
