qatar gp 2024: penalties and safety cars galore indeed. here is an attempted compilation of all the notable incidents and penalties (+ penalty points) that fia threw around like free cookies

im attempting this in a chronological order following the issuance of the penalties but. they were so many things happening so whatever we ball. and as always thank you my fantastic f1 mother @missed-apexes

so first of all. we all know of the max one position grid penalty (+1 pp) but of course, he beautifully overtook george right off in turn 1! love that for him

first crash, esteban, franco, and nico collision. franco and esteban were out, nico slightly damaged (?)

first penalty issued in the race: alex & lance collision. stroll retires eventually, while getting a 10s penalty. he might serve this next race?

lewis hamilton had a false start. 5s penalty.

bottas and lawson near-collision(?). apparently liam understeered/spun and bottas had to go wide to avoid. liam gets 10s penalty (+2 pp).

insert zhou's very magnificent overtaking yuki!

george was consistently on p2 and pitted but was fucked over by his 7s pit stop. rest in rip.

alex's wing mirror fell on the track. the shot of the singular mirror lying there on the track was comical but the delay of sc or any actions taken about it is insane even the commentators were confused

bottas drove over the wing mirror, got damage. the debris fluttered all over the track and caused puncture to lewis and sainz.

safety car for the debris was finally deployed 4 LAPS LATE (wtf race control)

perez lost drive, dropped to the last from what i remember was p5-6, and retired. not sure if this was during or after the safety car ended.

nico hulkenberg also out. his tyres just. gave out and he spun. at this point survival is optional in the qatar gp.

another safety car here. perez riding the scooter can be seen

lando not lifting during double waved yellow flags on the straights (this happened before the sc was deployed for the debris). 10s stop/go penalty (+3 pp). this was a massive gamechanger for the podium as he was stable on p2. and a stop/go specifically... well, as a mclaren hater i rejoiced. (3 penalty points is crazy though)

another collision for alex, with k-mag this time. 10s penalty (+2 pp) for alex.

lewis apparently did a lil speeding in the pitlane. drive-through penalty.

lewis was told to retire the car but ignored it.

george did a sc infringement (which i did not see so im not sure what exactly happened). a fia update stated his car was more than 20 car lengths behind, when it is supposed to be 10. 5s penalty (+1 pp).

DRIVER OF THE DAY: ZHOU GUANYU (P8) im so happy for him. literally carried kick's points this season (4 points).

podium result: max p1, charles p2, oscar p3, and it's insane charles did all that without drinking because his drinking system broke. forza ferrari.

charles is now only 8 points behind norris in the wdc!

birth of gax/rustappen beef ;

outside race bonus: max being extremely pissed at george, saying he's lost all respect for him and can't stand him because "he's always acting polite in front of cameras but inside there he's a completely different person." gax beef in 2024... interesting.

edit: addition on the last point as requested by oomf, in the press conference max stated that george was trying all he can to screw max over and pushing for the penalty. max kept trying to explain he has no motives to screw other cars over, and he's going slow following other cars' slow laps, but it felt like talking to a wall. basically, max called george a fake two-faced bitch (he didn't say this but you know what i mean) and lost all respect to him.

funny to note that this is max's 63rd win.

it is also worth noting that before the race, max had told george on the drivers parade holding room, something along the lines of "hope you and your fia mates are happy with what you've done." and according to ted the quote was actually much ruder. POP OFF

max has unfollowed george on instagram nevermind folks apparently max never followed him

DTS storyline predictions

Now that the teaser for season 6 is out, here’s a few cents on what storylines DTS s6 is likely to go for.

(Health warning that I don’t think these teammate or driver dynamics are necessarily true in real life, I am simply saying that if I wanted to make a bucketload of money as a Netflix producer this is how I’d overly dramatise events)

1. The Matador: Carlos Sainz the hunter, in the shadow of his own teammate, unloved, hungry, determined; his own team dragging him down with a net named strategy; the prey (his teammate) biting back; the hunter chases the bull and emerges victorious.

2. It’s lonely at the top : Caesar is all-powerful, but the council has knives; over 10 minutes of screentime will be spent on George and Max (dickhead!); checo’s early challenge for the crown at Jeddah; Max’s all out crushing of his competitors’ efforts; Max as a polarising figure.

3. The prodigal son/the resurrection of Lazarus: Daniel Ricciardo’s fall, rehabilitation, and triumphant return; Christian Horner dragging Zak Brown; returning “home” to Red Bull but it’s like a den of wolves (perform or die); THE BROKEN HAND (pain suffering hospital); brief victory at Mexico (Daniel did well that race).

4. The Young Guns: Oscar’s meteoric season vs Nyck’s crash out of F1; Logan struggling to keep his seat; cutthroat Marko vs supportive dad Vowles (Qatar will be milked to death for dangerous conditions).

5. The Old Hands: Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, old rivals, still desperate and hungry like a pair of lions still battling for the top; the inverse fates of Aston Martin falling vs Mercedes rising as the season progresses

6. The Older Sibling and the Prodigy: McLaren’s rollercoaster of a season; Lando’s run of P2 but no wins; Oscar’s sprint race win; jealousy, rivalry, hunger, bitterness.

7. The Civil War: the infighting at Alpine, childhood friends turned rivals turned bitter enemies; Esteban’s no good very bad penalty day; Esteban’s Monaco podium; Pierre’s Zandvoort podium; their no holds barred infighting on radio; team orders; management chaos (Otmar leaving)

8. Man overboard: Mark my words DTS will spend a whole episode on Guenther ending in his abrupt departure from Haas and he will be sent off with 300% more respect than four time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

i agree with merc's driver management anon tbh. i don't even like george and i feel for him a tiny bit here because. let's see.. (bear with me i love bullet lists)

he signs with merc in 2021 when the car was good, and also when it looked like lewis would win the wdc and probably retire. at most he'd stay maybe one or two more years.

neither of these things happen. the car sucks. lewis stays because he's hungrier than ever for the 8th.

that first year, everyone hypes george up a lot. he even gets a win. people talk at length about how george is so much better than lewis but no one takes the extensive experimentation into account.

2023. car still sucks. george does a lie detector and says with his entire chest that he's faster than lewis. spends the year getting soundly beat by him. things at merc seem to be breaking down. george goes into a wall at singapore and the way merc acted you'd think the end of times was nigh. this mistake doesn't do well for his reputation as a driver.

2024. lewis is moving to ferrari. george probably thinks ok, he can finally be the priority in the team. he can be the number 1 driver, the face of the team.

let's take a moment to talk about the rookies who came up with him. lando at mclaren, number 1 driver, who finally got his win this year after a long time of working hard for it. actually quite good at playing the team game. alex, who struggled at rbr but is doing well at williams. they love him so much they fucked over logan for him. he's a solid driver and while he doesn't have any wins yet, his skills are undeniable.

ok back. 2024. mainstream fans on social media have been displeased with george since at least qatar 23 if not earlier: it seems to be hitting critical mass this year. almost all of merc's social media posts, as well as f1 and espn's, are filled with comments about george buckling under pressure, not being as good as he thinks he is, and definitely not being a good teammate. on top of that his boss is trying to offer a metric fuckton of money to get max verstappen into the seat. plays around with the idea of fernando alonso until alonso goes like "lmao girl in THAT wheelbarrow?" and even bringing seb back from retirement. neither of these three are known for sitting quietly and following team orders and would probably laugh george out of the room at the suggestion that he be prioritized over them.

and then there's kimi antonelli. this ask is long enough so i won't go into detail over my feelings on that but at this point, george, who was desperate to be number 1, is watching his boss talk up a child who should be doing Intro to Calculus, while everyone calls him the next hamilton or verstappen.

and no one knows where george is in all this, including george himself. chances are though that he has not been impressive enough to be considered a leader or number 1 by anyone and merc aren't even pretending he might be. they're looking to replace lewis not just as a driver but as a leader and that has got to hurt for george.

The amount of DISRESPECT George has had to deal with is astounding. And it's coming from all sides. Fans, management, drivers. You can't help but empathise.

So Lewis. I don't want today to talk about the World champion, the Formula 1 driver, I would like to talk about Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, if you don’t mind. Can you describe the kind of kid you were at home and at school? What kind of kid were you?

[Smiling] Did you ever had a show called Dennis the Menace?

Oh yes of course.

You did?

Of that kind, yeah. Denis la Malice.

I was like Dennis the Menace 2.0. [laughs] I was climbing trees, I was just always riding my bike down the fastest hill. Naturally super competitive in everything that I did and, uhm, my dad helped me concentrate that energy into racing and that’s where stability came.

We know you were a huge fan of Ayrton Senna, but did you watch like every single F1 race, documentaries about F1?

No, when I was a kid I only watched documentaries on Ayrton Senna, read his books. Anything to do with Ayrton I would have it, whether it was a coffee mug or, not that I drink coffee as a kid, but I was watching Gran Prix from like since I was like 4 with my dad on the weekends. Yeah, Sunday sitting with my dad watching races was one of the best times, I remember.

If you could go back in time, where and when would it be?

It would probably be when I was living with my mum, before I was 8, so, yeah.

You are running the world so, how difficult is it to build friendships?

Yeah, it’s definitely not the easiest I would say. My two closest friends are from school, yeah, they are my brothers. Places where I’ve found good friendships are obviously on my job, and then when I’m doing music, when I’m working with musicians, it’s just like a different realm and there I’ve built some incredible relationships also.

What does being a grown up mean to you? Is it like tiresome to be more conscious of the impact you have on things and people, rather than the pleasant innocence of being a child?

I act like a kid all the time. I’m not embarrassed about it; I love having fun. So that’s why, you know, I’m always skydiving, surfing or I’m skiing or I’m riding my bike or whatever might be, that’s me being a kid. And that’s something I refuse to ever let go.

When you play a game with some children, maybe your family, nieces and nephews, do you let them win?

No, I try to win! I just [laughs] and they are good, they are getting good, so I have to get my wins while I can. But, my dad never let me win anything when I was a kid. I think is good to learn how to lose anyways, so [laughs]

Are you always on time or sometimes you’re late?

No, I’m always late. The only time I’m ever on time is when I’m getting in the car to race. But like if I’m going for a flight, I’m always late. I don’t know, I like the limit, yeah. [jokingly] I like getting there around the limit, I like the rush.

What are your thoughts and feelings about Max Verstappen? The man he is, the kind of champion.

He’s done an exceptional job. I think the team has done an amazing job. Collectively they truly deserve the success. Max has been faultless this year, he’s not made any mistakes. I only hope that there’s a time when I’ll be able to put up a fight for him.

When you quit F1 would you still want race like Dakar or the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

I currently don't really have any, like, zero, like, feelings to do those things. I love motorbikes, I’ve always loved Moto GP, still love it today. I have 2 super bikes. I think I probably always just gonna take my bikes out. I won’t compete professionally in anything ever again. It takes 10,000 hours to be, you know, a master of something else. I wanna spend that 10,000 hours on being the best dad or something like that, you know, or running my businesses in the best way I can. Where all my energy and focus will go to. For now, I’ll continue to skydive, I’ll continue to surf, those are probably the, riding the bikes, surfing and skydiving, those are the 3 fun things that I’ll make sure I always do.

Well, firstly, I've got to say a big congratulations to Max, winning the championship still with several races to go. And no, yeah, if I'd done my job yesterday it would have been a breeze today. We don't know why we were so quick this weekend, but that's the best the car's ever felt, so I'm grateful to have been a part of getting it to that point." Crews: "I do want to ask, though, in regards to the climate in Las Vegas, did that make a difference in your preparation for what you were going to do here?" Lewis: "The climate doesn't… It's not the… It's just that the race is so late, so you're going to bed at five, six AM, waking up and starting your day much later, which is quite difficult. So you don't get a lot of sun during the day, so that really messes with your rhythm. But otherwise, it's cold, yeah." Crews: "Yeah." Lewis: "And maybe the reason that we did so well is 'cause it's cold. If we're in a hot climate, that's where we struggle the most." Button: "Qatar? Night race?" Lewis: "Yeah. I mean, if the car drives like that in the next couple races then I think we'll be in a good spot to challenge the guys up front. And the championship's done, so now it's just all-out, fight for the best positions possible." Button: "Enjoy your last two races. It was ten years to the day, yesterday, that you won your first championship with Mercedes." Lewis: "We both looked a lot younger then, didn't we?" could you explain the mclaren reputation era please I missed it

ok well i don't really understand it entirely so bear with me here as i fumble through this.

essentially yesterday mclaren archived (deleted?) every single one of their instagram posts (and there were Thousands) except for this kind of twist trap esque video of lando, oscar and their car with the tagline "whatever it takes" like the imagine dragons song, or perhaps a 15 year old boy posting selfies of himself in the gym.

this of course is exactly what taylor swift did however many years ago right before she dropped her reputation album, archived every single one of her instagram posts except for these three videos of a snake slithering around and i don't remember what the words were associated with it but it was foreshadowing her reputation album. this was the album that she released directly after she got a whole lot of shit for her 1989 tour, took basically 2 years off and came back with some s tier bangers about how basically she didnt really care what the media thought of her, but she was reinventing herself (remember the "im sorry, the old taylor can't come to the phone right now, why? oh! cause she's dead!" meme" but essentially, it was her comeback after awhile away.

mclaren, as we know, has not won a championship since 2008 with sir lewis hamilton. their driver line up, lando norris and oscar piastri, is the youngest pairing of drivers on the grid (lando is 24, oscar is 22) and while the 2023 season for them started off absolutely terribly (their car fucking sucked) they were able to do some major upgrades throughout the season and turned it around by the silverstone race (just under halfway through the year). from silverstone on (13 races total) mclaren finished in the top 3 nine times (with both oscar and lando on the podium at the qatar and japan races) and were consistently in the points. oscar also won the sprint race in qatar. and lando had i think 17 overtakes at the mexico race, starting 19 and ending 5th. which is kind of incredible. in a season of absolute red bull domination (lets remember that a red bull driver won ever race except for the singapore race, which carlos won with the help of lando) they were consistently challenging them and there was one time in texas (i think?) where lando almost was able to overtake max.

so yes, red bull is definitely the favored team at the moment and is coming off of quite possibly the best season they've ever had. however. mclaren have some distinct advantages going into the 2024 season:

they do not have to worry about silly season. as we know, 14 drivers have contracts ending at the end of 2024 which means the absolute mad rush to resign and offer contracts across basically every team. redbull is basically guaranteed to not resign checo and might even swap him for daniel ricciardo halfway through the season whereas lands contract with mclaren ends in 2025 and oscars ends in 2026. mclaren can spend all of their time worrying about the car and the drivers rather than who they are signing.

oscar piastri. oscar just finished his rookie season (and previously won the f2 and f3 championships and won rookie of the year this year). in terms of rookie years he had an outstanding one. people compared him to lewis hamilton's rookie year. as a refresher, lewis hamiltons rookie year was in 2007 (also at mclaren) and he won his first championship in 2008. oscar is the first rookie since lewis hamilton to get multiple podiums and win something in his rookie year. expectations are running high here.

lando norris's expiring contract. as we know lando has one more confirmed year with mclaren. cel of mclaren zak brown has announced that they want to extend landos contract with mclaren, but, hes starting to get really really good, which means that a top team like red bull or mercedes might also try to get him as a driver. this is the year for mclaren to prove to lando that they can give him what he wants (which is to win a race. in his 5 years of formula 1 he hasn't won anything. and once he starts winning then hes going to want to win a championship. but. there is max verstappen to contend with). so their absolute balls to the wall tactic could work pretty well for them here. pre season testing doesnt start for over another month and they are already clearly locked in to the 2024 season.

lando and oscar actually get along. sure, formula 1 is an individual sport, but there is the drivers championship (for the individual driver) and the constructors championship (for the team with the most points). so they do have to work together. drivers not working together in the past has led to some ... undesirable results for teams (the great brocedes civil war of nico rosberg and lewis hamilton that ultimately resulted in nico retiring after he won his first championship, whatever the hell was going with max and daniel for part of the 2018 season, the french civil war at alpine between pierre gasley and esteban ocon) they are also both very consistent drivers. neither are incredibly crash prone and seem quite willing to work together on the track to optimize results.

yes they do also have disadvantages. lando has never won a race, they only have one pole position between them (lando in russia in 2021) and they're not a red bull. clearly they're the underdog in the situation. but they did finish fourth in the constructors championship in 2023 ("best of the rest") (and after basically getting next to no points for the first several races on account of the fact that their car was shit) behind ferrari, mercedes, and red bull. they're coming for the top 3 and honestly it could be their season to lose.

if ferrari doesnt change their strategy approach then they could be out of a shot at top 3. also ferrari have to deal with the nightmare of resigning both of their drivers (or finding new ones). merc and red bull will both be giving it their all (lewis hamilton really really wants to win his 8th world championship before he retires and max is well. max.) but if mclaren has a competitive car from the start of the season and doesnt have to play catch up for the first several races, then they could easily finish in the top 3.

also they released their livery today? which really confuses me (is that different than the car unveiling? what is going on someone mansplain it to me please)

2024 Qatar GP: Winners and Losers

As always, it is time for my winners podium and losers podium. remember, no hate to any drivers, they are all extremely talented, but I will be honest about their performances/results. And boy was this a doozy.

Winners:

Zhou Guanyu

The smiles on everyone's face tells it all, Zhou brought home Sauber's first points of the season with a stellar race. Finishing in 8th place, Zhou was able to avoid the chaos on track, not incurring any penalties (which you would think is easy, but in this race was actually difficult) and had some fantastic overtakes in order to pull arguably the worst car on the grid into points position. It seems that the small upgrade package that Sauber brought, including a new front wing, has finally given that car some kick and the minute he had even the smallest amount of pace, Zhou took full advantage. Incredible for him, incredible for Sauber, incredible overall. And he got his first Driver of the Day out of it. Go Zhou!

2. Max Verstappen

After the penalty that took away his pole, Verstappen had a point to prove in this race. And he certainly did, taking the lead from Russell almost immediately, and fighting off Lando Norris for pretty much the entire race. Only when Norris got his penalty was Verstappen able to breathe, so this was no easy-breezy victory for him. But his incredible defense (especially after the safety cars) meant that he held them all off and came home to take his second GP win since the summer break, and first win as a 4x World Champion. Snaps to you Max Verstappen.

3. Charles Leclerc

Did anyone expect a Ferrari to take second today? I certainly didn't, not with Qatar being one of the team's worst tracks and their car seeming to fall off in the last few races. But Leclerc drove a strong race, sticking close to Oscar Piastri for much of it. Then when the safety cars came out, Ferrari chose their time perfectly and took advantage of McLaren's misstep with Piastri (pit right before the safety car) and Norris' penalty to get up to 2nd place. Some may look at that and think it was all luck, but Piastri was breathing down his neck for the entire race, especially during the safety cars. He had to pull off stellar defense to keep the faster McLaren behind him, and the wheel-to-wheel was brilliant.

Runner Ups: Pierre Gasly (for his brilliant P5 finish and defending against Sainz), Alonso (for a solid points finish), and Magnussen (for a points finish)

Losers:

Mercedes

This was a tossup between 1 and 2, but when you mess up so bad you ruin one drivers chances of winning and ruin the other drivers chance of even getting in the points you are the biggest loser of them all. They had pole, and Russell's bad start led them to lose it immediately. But it was the Mercedes seven second pit stop that took away any chance of even a podium in this race, and their table timing. Then Lewis Hamilton's car absolutely screwed him over the whole time, all paired with his multiple penalties. Honestly it was like beating a dead horse. Hamilton even said he was going to retire the car (although he was denied) due to how bad it was. Terrible Mercedes, terrible. Especially painful after how good Las Vegas was.

2. Lando Norris

This was just not Norris' race. While he had a stellar start, pulling into 2nd ahead of Russell, and he had brilliant attempts on Verstappen, he just could not get by the Red Bull driver (felt a lot like the last few laps of Austin). Then after not slowing under a yellow flag, Norris was a victim of the FIA's extreme penalties from this race, and took a 10 second stop and go penalty which sent him all the way back to 15th. He was barely able to make it into the points, finishing 10th. This meant that a) Ferrari crept closer for the WCC and b) Charles Leclerc crept closer for 2nd in the WDC. Bad day for Norris in the end.

3. Alex Albon

Albon had a very messy race. Multiple almost collisions and penalties rendered his efforts useless, and he ended the race dead last. The pace of the Williams car just wasn't there, but it was exasperated by Albon's risky moves that meant he got on multiple drivers bad sides, including Kevin Magnussen who, when overtaking on him, told him to '**** off' after Albon pushed him off road and almost caused a collision. A bizarrely mad race from the Williams driver, which earned him a place on my losers podium.

Runner Ups: Lawson (multiple rough penalties), Tsunoda (dropping so many places), and Bottas (for just missing out on points)

DNF Graveyard: Hulkenberg, Perez, Stroll, Colapinto, and Ocon. They deserved their own place.

For Valentine’s Day, here is a quick ficlet I had written a couple of days after the Lewis to Ferrari news.

His Thursday begins as it usually does these days, now that he doesn’t have to prepare for media day or other sponsor obligations before a race weekend – a late start.

A warm cup of tea as he sits outside, watching over his animals and garden. There’s a few pieces of toast with samplings of butter and jam on the side. It’s peaceful, more peaceful than he’s known since before he started karting.

Though it doesn’t last very long.

His peaceful Thursday is disturbed with his phone buzzing. He really should turn that thing off, go completely off the grid and ignore the world. But that’s a thought for another time, right now, Sebastian is still beholden to the social aspect of having a cell phone.

There’s a few messages already waiting for him with more pouring in and a missed call from Jenson. One thing stands out, a message from Jenson saying: Lewis to Ferrari?????

If he spits out his tea in shock at the message, then that’s no one’s business but his.

He had heard rumblings of Lewis going to Ferrari during the previous year, and had even talked to Lewis about it during his brief visit to Monaco. Lewis hadn’t made any indication of seriously considering it, so loyal to Mercedes and getting back to the top step with the team he’d given his blood, sweat, and tears to; with the engine supplier that had been the backbone of his entire career since he was just 13 years old.

But that had been before Singapore, before Qatar, before COTA, before Brazil. It had been before Lewis had been left alone on the podium with only Ferrari and McLaren to congratulate him. It had been before crashing with George and taking the blame for the crash despite being put on soft tyres while George was on medium tyres – the strategy should have been obvious. It had been before he’d gotten disqualified due to the plank and losing a podium position that could have been essential in him getting P2 in the WDC. It had been before the hellish race he had in Brazil, a place that he loved more than anything and considered a second home.

After all of that, maybe Sebastian does understand why Lewis would go to Ferrari. Why he would take a risk somewhere else. Sebastian had been in a similar place so many years ago when Ferrari came knocking on the door. As much as he loved Red Bull, Christian, and Daniel, Sebastian had seen the tides shifting. How he’d gone a year without a win and Daniel had come in to win three times. How Ferrari had offered him everything he could have wanted.

Instead of calling back Jenson, he goes directly to the source.

“Hi,” the familiar British voice rings out from his phone.

“Hi,” Sebastian repeats, not knowing how to start the conversation. They hadn’t had such a conversation when Sebastian had signed with Ferrari – that day had been spent with Lewis’ doing his best to have Seb turn as scarlet as the race suit he would wear. And the conversation in 2020 when it was announced that he would be going to Aston Martin had been short due to Sebastian not wanting to talk too much about how he felt about it. Instead that night had been spent with drinks and Lewis’ bare body pressed up against his own.

“So you heard?”

“Is it true? Are you…” Seb trails off.

“Fred and John are a very convincing duo,” Lewis jokes with a slight laugh. “Would you have done it?” He asks after a few moments of silence.

“I did do it,” Sebastian replies. He too had once left a team built around him, where he won his championships, to go to Ferrari where another driver was already established. “I think that you’ll do better than I did,” he adds.

“Could you open the door?” Lewis questions and right on cue the doorbell rings.

“Are you?”

“Yeah.” Sebastian doesn’t hesitate to get up and walk into his house so he can open the door.

Standing on his doorstep with a phone held up to his ear is one Lewis Hamilton. The most sought after man is standing there with nothing more than his phone.

“What? How?” Sebastian questions letting his hand with the phone drop to his side.

“I was driving back from paintballing and next thing I knew I was on a plane to Switzerland,” Lewis replies.

“Paintballing?”

“I took my side of the garage paintballing so I could tell them,” Lewis answers as if it is the most normal way to tell someone such big news. Sebastian can’t help himself but laugh at the absurdity of Lewis taking his team paintballing just to tell them that he’s leaving at the end of the year. “What? It was better than my original idea of taking them skydiving,” Lewis pouts before he too bursts out laughing.

As the world of F1 (and Motorsport to a degree) falls into shambles around them, the two are just laughing at the absurdity of it all.

It’s… nice.
