Big girl now
Tumblr media
Charles Leclerc x Leclerc!Reader
Summary - Request above <3
Warning - Nightmare
-
When Hervé and Pascale had their first child together, Charles Leclerc, they made a promise that they would be stern and loving parents. They wanted to raise their children to be very respectful, responsible and successful people.
So one of the many 'rules' they followed was; Not allowing any of their four children to sleep in their with them after a certain age. What age is that? Five years old.
-
01.36am
Charles was sat on his bed, he was watching a tv show whilst also texting with his friends. This was an often occurrence, he's a teenage boy who stayed up all night and slept all day especially now during summer break.
His tv was fairly quiet, even though he was an unruly teenager he respected at least on of his parents wishes - "Be quiet as your sisters room is next door"
The room next door to his was Y/n Leclerc, his five year old baby sister. The light of his life. Every night she is put down to bed for 8.30pm and to wake up at 7.30am.
There was a faint knock at his door. Charles gets up from the comfort of his bed and opens the door gently. Just outside in the darkened hallway is Y/n.
Her hair is crazy, she's clutching tightly to her little teddy bear and there's floods of tears streaming down her face. "Cha Cha?" She whispered.
Instant the sixteen year old boy kneels down. "Que se passe-t-il mon ange?" What's going on my angel? Charles collects the little girl in his arms, thumbs wiping her tears.
"Maman et papa ont dit que je devais être une grande fille" Mommy and Daddy said I had to be a big girl Y/n had yet to learn English, Hervé and Pascale wanted all their children's first language to be French. "Mais c'est effrayant..." But it's scary...
He knew exactly what she was on about, he went through it all with Lorenzo when he was at that age and he did the exact same for Arthur. Charles just picked her up and made his way to bed.
"Veux-tu en parler mon ange?" Do you want to talk about it angel? He knew he had to try, that was how he and Lorenzo would calm down Arthur. But when Y/n just shook her head, Charles knew to not ask again.
Instead Y/n just tucked herself closer to her older brother, muttering softly. "Câlin…câlin" Cuddle...cuddle So thats what he did, Charles held her tightly. Rocking her back to sleep gently.
"C'est bon mon ange…toutes les grandes filles ont parfois besoin de leurs frères..." It's okay angel...all big girls need their brothers sometimes He knew how he had to cherish moments like this because he knows how time flies by.

"It should be noted here that our heroine's mother and sister, certainly better informed than anyone, had suddenly corrected their language. Her sister, who had married the Chevalier O'Gorman, sent a letter to London, dated July 15, 1777, to "Monsieur le Chevalier d'Eon, former Minister Plenipotentiary of France, in London at M. Lautrem, Brenner Street, Golden Square", and she named the recipient "mon cher frère". After long confessions about certain household difficulties, Mme O'Gorman expressed the hope of soon seeing her brother again in Tonnerre, said that their mother had the same wish, and ended, speaking of this long-promised return, with these words a little enigmatic: "Warn us, be sure of the secret!" But, from the return to France of the chevalière and the public declaration of her female sex, the language of the mother and the sister changes absolutely. It is a daughter and a sister to whom these ladies address without hesitation, and it seems that for them no dispute is possible in this regard. Thus, on January 19, 1778, Mme d'Eon had Mme O'Gorman write for her, and signed a long letter addressed to "Mademoiselle la chevalière d'Eon", in which she constantly referred to her as "ma chère fille". Finally, the chevalier O'Gorman, who seems to have been very actively involved in the affairs and occupations of his sister-in-law, the chevalière, and to have maintained a very close correspondence with her, never calls her anything other than "ma chère sœur", even in the most confidential communications."
~ La Chevalière d'Éon a Versailles by Paul Fromageot published in Le Carnet Historique & Littéraire, 1 Jan 1901, (translated with google translate)

Behind the camera -> Prologue
Tumblr media
"Maman, Papa, you promised to tell me something special today," Lorenzo said, his eyes wide with curiosity.
Pascale exchanged a loving glance with Hervé and then smiled at their eager son. "Well, Lorenzo, you are going to be a big brother," she announced, her voice brimming with joy.
Lorenzo's face lit up with delight. "Really? I'm going to have a little brother or sister?" he asked, hardly able to contain his excitement.
Pascale laughed gently and nodded. "Actually, you're going to have both! You're going to be a big brother of twins!"
"Des jumeaux?! Deux frères ou deux sœurs?" Lorenzo asked, his French flowing naturally as he processed the news. (Twins?! Two brothers or two sisters?)
Hervé grinned. "Un frère et une sœur" he replied. {One brother and one sister}
Lorenzo's eyes widened even more, realizing he was going to have a brother and a sister. "C'est incroyable!" he exclaimed, wrapping his arms around his parents' necks in a tight hug (This is incredible!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the next few months, Pascale's pregnancy progressed beautifully, but with the joy of having twins came the challenges of carrying two babies at once. She experienced intense cravings, sometimes even at odd hours of the night.
"Maman, you want pickles and ice cream for breakfast?!" Lorenzo chuckled one morning as he found his mother raiding the fridge.
She grinned sheepishly. "It's the babies, they're making me crave all sorts of things," she explained, trying to balance a jar of pickles and a tub of ice cream in her hands.
As the due date approached, Pascale's anticipation mingled with nervousness. Her pregnancy had been more tiring than the first time she carried Lorenzo, and giving birth to twins presented its own set of challenges
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The day had finally arrived - October 16th, a day that would forever change the lives of the Leclerc family. Pascale, the expectant mother, was lying in her hospital bed, surrounded by her husband Hervé and their eldest son Lorenzo. The anticipation in the air was palpable as they eagerly awaited the arrival of the newest additions to their family
Inside the delivery room, the medical team prepared for the unique challenge that lay ahead. Pascale's pregnancy had been a rollercoaster, and as the time approached, the doctors were on high alert. The twins were fraternal, but it had become evident during the course of the pregnancy that they were different in more than just their gender. Yn, the youngest, had been nestled lower in her mother's womb, making her delivery more complicated.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo was staying with Philippe Bianchi and his family, a friend of his dad. Jules, who was now eight years old, was Lorenzo’s best friend and Charles’ future godfather. The two boys eagerly waited for news of the twins' arrival.
"Do you think they'll be okay, Jules?" Lorenzo asked, his eyes filled with concern.
Jules patted his shoulder reassuringly. "Of course, they will! Your maman and papa are strong, and the doctors are taking good care of them. We'll get to meet the babies soon!"
As the clock struck noon, the contractions intensified, and Pascale's grip on Hervé's hand tightened. "Ça fait mal," she said, her face contorting with pain (It hurts)
Hervé, trying to be the supportive husband he always was, replied, "Tout va bien se passer, mon amour. Les médecins sont là pour nous aider." (Everything will be fine, my love. The doctors are here to help us.)
In the Bianchi house, Lorenzo was pacing back and forth, his nerves getting the better of him. He was excited about having siblings, but the thought of being responsible for two new lives made him feel a mix of emotions. He glanced at his father, who was trying his best to reassure him with a smile.
Back in the delivery room, Pascale was giving it her all. The medical staff encouraged her, "Vous faites du bon travail, Madame Leclerc. Bientôt, vos bébés seront là" (You're doing a great job, Mrs. Leclerc. Soon, your babies will be here)
After what felt like an eternity, the moment had arrived. The first cries of a baby filled the room. Charles had made his entrance into the world. Relief washed over Pascale, and tears welled up in Hervé's eyes as he saw his son for the first time.
The medical team continued to work efficiently, and soon, both babies were cleaned and swaddled in warm blankets. Hervé and Lorenzo were allowed into the room to meet the newest members of their family.
The moment Hervé and Pascale laid eyes on their newborn twins, tears of joy streamed down their cheeks. Pascale whispered softly in French, "Ils sont tellement beaux, nos bébés." (They are so beautiful, our babies.)
Hervé kissed her forehead and replied, "Oui, ils le sont, mon amour. (Yes, they are, my love.) Our little miracles."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day, with the newborn twins cradled in Pascale's arms, Lorenzo entered the hospital room, his excitement palpable. He approached the bed, looking down at his new siblings with awe.
"Hey, little ones," he said softly. "Je suis ton grand frère Lorenzo {I am your big brother Lorenzo} They're so tiny!" he exclaimed, carefully touching Yn's tiny hand and then Charles’
Hervé smiled proudly and placed an arm around Lorenzo's shoulders. "Yes, they are. Meet your baby brother, Charles, and your baby sister, Yn"
"Charles et Yn?" Lorenzo repeated their names with a hint of wonder in his voice
"Yes, Charles and Yn," Pascale said, her eyes shining with joy
"Maman, they're adorable!" Lorenzo said, beaming at his mother. "I promise to be the best big brother ever!"
Tears of joy welled up in Pascale's eyes as she pulled her son into a warm embrace. "You already are, mon chéri. I know you'll be an amazing big brother to them"
The Leclerc family was overjoyed with the new additions. News of the twins' arrival spread quickly, and soon the hospital room was filled with family members eager to meet the newest additions. Uncles, aunts, and cousins showered the twins with love and affection, while their grandparents couldn't stop beaming with pride.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jules, the godfather, was ecstatic when he finally got to meet the twins. He bent down and kissed their foreheads gently, promising to protect them and be the best godfather he could be.
Jules Bianchi, Charles' godfather, was only eight years old, but he felt incredibly responsible and honored to be given such an important role. When he heard the news, he rushed to the hospital with a small gift in hand. "Bienvenue, les petits! Je suis votre parrain, Jules." (Welcome, little ones! I'm your godfather, Jules.)
The room filled with laughter and joy as everyone celebrated the arrival of the twins. Yn and Charles were already surrounded by an immense amount of love from their family and friends.
As the days turned into weeks, and the twins grew, their bond with Lorenzo strengthened. They had an unbreakable connection as the Leclerc siblings, and the world was eager to see the adventures that awaited them.

The prequel to Unleashing the Squirrels on La Rochejaquelein, aka a very historically accurate depiction of the Committee of Public Safety in October 1793 training Republican squirrels to be sent to Kléber in the Vendee.
(Yes... I just couldn't help myself! )
Obviously, Robespierre would be a natural at it. Admittedly, none of the biographies I own on him make any mention of squirrels in his life (1) (2), but he is known to have been an animal lover. His relationship with Brount is well-documented (and adorable). Plus, if his sister Charlotte is to be believed (3) "he was given pigeons and sparrows which he took great care of, and he often spent the moments not devoted to study with them" ("On lui avait donné des pigeons et des moineaux dont il avait le plus grand soin, et auprès desquels il venait souvent passer les moments qui n’étaient pas consacrés à l’étude").
Clearly, he was good with animals!
Robespierre & Pigeons Anecdote (TW: Sad Story / Extreme Animal Neglect)
To not completely waste your time with random stuff and add an educational touch to what basically amounts to shitposting, I'll add a well-known anecdote from Charlotte's Memoires (4):
Every Sunday, my sister and I were brought to be reunited with our two brothers (5). These were days of happiness and joy for us. My brother Maximilien, who collected pictures and engravings, would display his treasures and be delighted by our pleasure in looking at them.
He also showed us his aviary and, one by one, let us hold his sparrows and pigeons. We longed for him to give us one of his favourite birds. We pleaded with him, but he refused for a long time, fearing we would not take proper care of it. However, one day, he gave in to our requests and gave us a beautiful pigeon. My sister and I were enchanted.
He made us promise never to let it lack anything; we swore a thousand times and kept our promise for a few days. We would have always kept our oath, had unfortunate pigeon, forgotten by us in the garden, not died during a stormy night.
When he learned of its death, Maximilien’s tears flowed, and he overwhelmed us with fully deserved reproaches. He swore never to entrust any of his beloved pigeons to us again.
It has been sixty years since, through a child’s thoughtlessness, I caused my elder brother’s sorrow and tears; and yet, my heart still aches. It feels as if I haven’t aged a day since the tragic end of the poor pigeon deeply affected Maximilien, as I am still deeply affected by it myself.
Notes:
(1) What a huge oversight on the part of his biographers!
(2) Yes, I checked each and every one of them; no squirrels anywhere...
(3) And I do believe her... It would be a very weird thing to lie about
(4) This is my own translation. You can definetly find much better-sounding ones out there...
(5) After the death of their mother and abandonment of their father, the Robespierre siblings lived apart: the two girls, Charlotte and Henriette, were taken care of by the Robespierre aunts and Maximilien, and Augustin were raised by their maternal grandparents.

lorenzotl SHE DID IT! I can't describe in words how proud I am of her, she proved to everyone - first of all to herself that she is worthy of it! And it was worth the tears we endured, the late-night Facetime calls in which she drops out of university and returns home, the terrible and difficult exams. My heart is overflowing with joy for my princess. I love you incredibly much, Aura. Nous sommes fiers de toi! (We are proud of you)

The rule of the good King Brushen and Queen Spindle is threatened by an evil plot from within the court. When their young prince is found murdered, the isle is thrown into turmoil. Behind the scenes, the wicked Lord Husk and Lady Aspen are determined to take control. But to underestimate the power of the islanders and the ancient prophecies is a big mistake...
Larklight by Philip Reeve

One ordinary sort of morning they receive a correspondence informing them that a gentleman is on his way to visit, a Mr Webster. Visitors to Larklight are rare if not unique, and a frenzy of preparation ensues. But it is entirely the wrong sort of preparation, as they discover when their guest arrives, and a Dreadful and Terrifying (and Marvellous) adventure begins. It takes them to the furthest reaches of Known Space, where they must battle the evil First Ones in a desperate attempt to save each other - and the Universe.

You were the person who preferred house parties over clubs anytime of the day. It somewhat seemed more intimate, having people you knew around compared to a sea full of various faces.
Checking yourself one more time in the rearview mirror, you nodded at yourself as you grabbed your phone and made your way out of the car only to be held hostage by your older brother.
“Ma petite soeur, vous êtes ici!” Charles grinned as he put an arm around your shoulder, leading you to where the party was, “I’m glad you could make it from your busy schedule.” My little sister, you’re here!
You rolled your eyes playfully, walking inside the house and taking in the blaring music and the smell of booze, “Toujours le frère dramatique. How could I miss it?” Always the dramatic brother.
“I’m your favorite brother anyways,” He grinned, nudging your shoulder as he grabbed a drink for you, “You always tell me that you’re busy.”
“No, Lorenzo’s my favorite,” You poked your tongue out, taking the drink from his hand, “Well obviously I’m not busy now.”
“I’m hurt, Y/N. I’ll get back at you later,” Charles feigned offense, putting a hand on his chest, “For now, enjoy the party, okay?”
You nodded and smiled, seeing him walk off to greet and mingle with other people at the party. As you roamed around the house, you grabbed a plate of appetizers and headed out to the area where no one was – at least, that’s you thought.
“Cool party,” You mumbled as you set the tray down, taking a sip of your drink, “Still a bit overwhelming.”
“How is it overwhelming?”
“Oh Jésus, mes canapés!” You exclaimed as you dropped the appetizer on the floor from surprise, “Ce n'était pas gentil de venir comme ça.” Oh Jesus, my canapés! That wasn’t nice of you to come up like that.
Carlos chuckled softly, standing up to hand you his handkerchief, “French? I can only speak so little.”
“Monégasque, but I’ll let you slide,” You smiled softly, taking the handkerchief from him to wipe your fingers, “Sorry if I intruded your space, I didn’t notice you back there.”
“No problem about that,” He shrugged, mirroring your actions as you sat down on the armchair, “I didn’t want to disturb you and your appetizer tray.”
“Me and my appetizer tray against all odds,” You joked as you offered him the tray, “Take some. The smoked salmon canapés are great.”
“Mind if I join you and your appetizers?” Carlos grinned, putting a piece in his mouth and nodding in satisfaction, “Delicious.”
Smiling as you turned to look at him, you nodded, “Won’t the party miss you…I didn’t get your name.”
“Carlos,” He smiled back, leaning back against the chair and staring out at the sea, “I’d rather have your company.”
“Well, nice to meet you, Carlos. I’m Y/N,” You replied, taking a bite out of the appetizer, “I hope I don’t bore you.”
Carlos looked at you, admiring the way the light shone on your face and how your smile made his heart skip a beat, “I’m sure you won’t, miss salmon canapés.”
As the night progressed, you and Carlos didn’t bother going back to the party from how much you enjoyed each other’s presence.
“Dios mío! I can’t believe you’re Charles’ sister!” Carlos laughed as he shook his head, “You should’ve told me earlier!”
“I look nothing like them, probably more like Lorenzo,” You chuckled, running a hand through your hair, “It wasn’t worth mentioning!”
“Now that you say it,” He teased, raising his hands in defeat as you nudged him, “I’m kidding!”
“I’m surprised you aren’t bored of me yet,” You replied as you pulled your knees up to your chest, “It’s been a few hours and the party’s dying.”
Carlos rolled his eyes in response, taking the tray from you, “I would do this all over again, honestly.”
You turned your head to the side to look at him, “So you’re saying you want to see me again?”
“Just trying to be smooth,” Carlos teased, “But of course, I want to see you again.”
Nodding in response, you stood up and shrugged the jacket off your shoulders as you handed it back to him, “You’ll text me?”
“Ay, keep the jacket on, princesa,” He clicked his tongue, putting it back on your shoulders, “I’ll text you. I’ll walk you to your car.”
Carlos gently put his hand on your back as the two of you walked out of the house that had people passed out on different areas of it.
You smiled as you stood by your car, tiptoeing to kiss him on the cheek, “I’ll see you soon.”
Watching you drive off, Carlos smiled to himself as he held a hand up to his cheek from where your lips lingered for a bit.
“You seem happy, mate,” Charles yawned, walking up to his friend, “Meet someone?”
Carlos nodded with a smile as he put his hands in his pockets, “Yeah. About that…I do need to talk to you.”
bonus scene!
“You know something?” You said, swinging your hands as you walked down the paddock, “I have a good feeling about this race weekend.”
Carlos grinned as he squeezed your hand, “I do, too. I have my lucky charm with me.”
Taking his cap off, he placed it on your head with a smile and continued walking to the garage with Charles following not far behind.
“You know, I’m never going to get used the two of you,” Charles groaned, catching up and walking in between you and Carlos, “Wait ‘til Enzo comes around.”
“I already told him beforehand,” You poked your tongue out as you pushed him aside, holding onto Carlos’ hand again, “He was happy about it.”
As you dragged Carlos away, the Spanish driver couldn’t help but turn around to a glaring Charles that mouthed, ‘That’s my baby sister. I’m watching you.’
“So, amor,” He nervously chuckled as he turned back to look at you, “We should definitely get me an upvote from Charles.”

It was a warm summer afternoon in the small town of Monte Carlo, Monaco, where the Leclerc family resided. Yn and Charles, just three years old, were playing in their backyard, their laughter echoing through the air. Despite being twins, Yn and Charles had their distinct personalities and looks, yet they shared an unbreakable bond
"Charles, catch me if you can!" Yn giggled, running around the garden, her little feet barely keeping up with her enthusiasm
"Attends, Yn! I'm coming!" Charles called back, his eyes shining with excitement as he chased after his sister
Their playtime was always filled with joy and mischief, and today was no exception. Their older brother, Lorenzo, joined in the fun
"Lorenzo, regarde! Look at me!" Yn shouted as she tried to perform a somersault. "Je peux le faire! I can do it!"
Lorenzo clapped his hands, "Wow, Yn! That was great!"
Charles, feeling a little competitive, decided to show off too. "Watch this! Je vais faire un saut en hauteur! I'm going to do a high jump!"
Yn and Lorenzo watched in awe as Charles jumped, trying to touch the lowest branch of a nearby tree. He didn't quite reach it, but his attempt was still impressive.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the following weeks, Yn attended her ballet classes with enthusiasm, and her love for dancing only grew. Charles, on the other hand, developed an interest in racing from a young age. Hervé, a racing enthusiast himself, couldn't be happier to see his son's passion for speed and cars. He gifted Charles a small toy race car, which quickly became his most treasured possession
"Maman, look what I can do!" Yn twirled around clumsily, trying her best to imitate the graceful movements she had seen on TV. Her parents smiled lovingly, encouraging her tiny attempt at ballet
"Très bien, ma chérie! You're doing great," her mother praised, clapping her hands. "You'll be a wonderful little ballerina!"
"Charles, you should try too!" Yn beamed, hoping her brother would join in her enthusiasm for ballet.
Charles laughed and shook his head. "No, no, Yn. I want to be a race car driver like Papa! Vroom vroom!" He pretended to steer an imaginary car, and Lorenzo enthusiastically joined in the play
Pascale and Hervé watched their daughter with pride, celebrating every little step she took in her ballet journey. However, Yn's clumsiness soon caught the attention of the other girls in her ballet class, who began to tease and make fun of her
"Regardez-la, elle danse comme un éléphant maladroit! (Look at her, she dances like a clumsy elephant!)" one of the girls mocked, causing the others to giggle.
Yn felt her enthusiasm waning, her heart heavy with sadness. She couldn't understand why the other girls were mean to her, but she was determined not to let their words discourage her.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the twins grew older, they started kindergarten, and Yn was excited to embark on this new adventure with her brother. However, things didn't go as smoothly as she had hoped. Charles, being the more outgoing and confident of the two, quickly made friends with the other children, while Yn struggled to connect with her peers
One day, after a particularly challenging day at school, Yn came home feeling downcast. She sat at the kitchen table with her parents, sharing her feelings
"Maman, Papa, pourquoi est-ce que Charles a toujours des amis, et moi, je n'en ai pas?" (Mom, Dad, why does Charles always have friends, and I don't?) Yn asked tearfully
Her parents exchanged understanding glances, and her father pulled her into a comforting hug. "Ne t'inquiète pas, ma chérie. Les amis viendront avec le temps. Tu es spéciale, tout comme ton frère." (Don't worry, my dear. Friends will come with time. You're special, just like your brother)
Yn nodded, trying to hold back her tears. She wished she could be as confident and popular as Charles, but it seemed like an impossible task
Months passed, and Yn tried her best to keep her feelings buried, not wanting to upset her brother or their parents. But one day, the weight of it all became too much to bear. Unable to hold back any longer, Yn confronted Charles during their walk home from school
"Charles, tu ne comprends pas. C'est difficile pour moi. Les autres se moquent de moi et je n'ai pas d'amis" she finally confessed, her voice quivering with emotion. (Charles, you don't understand. It's hard for me. The others make fun of me, and I have no friends)
Charles stopped in his tracks, finally seeing the pain in his sister's eyes that he had been blind to for so long "Je suis désolé, Yn. Je ne savais pas) he said, feeling regretful (I'm sorry, Yn. I didn't know)
They sat down on a nearby bench, and Yn poured her heart out to Charles about the loneliness she had been enduring. Charles listened attentively, his heart aching for his sister. He realized how selfish he had been, caught up in his own excitement without noticing the pain she was going through.
"Je suis vraiment désolé, Yn. Je ne voulais pas te faire du mal. Je serai là pour toi, quoi qu'il arrive" Charles said, his eyes filled with sincerity. (I'm truly sorry, Yn. I didn't mean to hurt you. I'll be there for you, no matter what happens)
Tears welled up in Yn's eyes as she hugged her brother tightly “Merci, Charles. Je t'aime” she whispered, feeling a rush of relief (Thank you, Charles. I love you)
From that day on, Charles made a conscious effort to include Yn in his circle of friends, and the two became inseparable. Yn also found solace in pursuing other hobbies and interests, such as drawing and storytelling, where her creativity and uniqueness were celebrated.
Their relationship grew stronger as they navigated through childhood together. Their parents often marveled at how inseparable they were, and even though they had their fair share of fights, their bond only deepened with time.

It is with immense sadness that I announce the departure of our kind Sassoo, older sister of Atchoum. We did not talk about Sassoo's illness (cancer) to focus on her well-being and care for her comfort until the end.
Sassoo was above all the childhood cat of my daughter Maude who, at the age of 8, had adopted her cat from the shelter as a big girl. They grew up together and it was together in each other's arms that she said goodbye to her. 😭
Sassoo, know that we will never forget you. Even if you were discreet and more composed than your brother Atchoum. You were just as important to me. Thank you for having been in our lives.
Sassoo 2010 - 2024 🕊️
*****

Day two of posting about Les Mis Letters 2024, and today I have actual Thoughts!
My overall impression is that I'm enjoying the original French a lot better. I'm definitely able to pick up a lot more nuances, and I'm glad I decided to go this route in 2024.
First main thought: Monsieur Bienvenu is very much not the same thing as Monseigneur Bienvenu, and I have some Feelings about the fact that the English translation (at least for Les Mis Letters) does not carry that over.
Of course, those who are more knowledgeable about the ins and outs of this translation and the others are free to jump in, but I wouldn't have thought it would be so hard to just go with Monsignor Bienvenu, or even keep Monseigneur Bienvenu. The title for me makes a very big difference, in terms of the character and what Victor Hugo is trying to do. Especially since, as the chapter title says, Myriel goes from Monsieur to Monseigneur from the will of the people of Digne.
His new title also is part of the theme that we are presented with in the very first chapter, of having to overcome first impressions or being judged in a skewed fashion - either too harshly or too well - by others; I think the English version does the reader and the story a disservice for not keeping that specific word.
My second main thought is that I was able to grasp a lot more nuances this time around, such as the fact that in M. Myriel's budget, there are several items that have to do with prison rehabilitation and improving prison conditions and freeing fathers imprisoned for debt. As I told my friend, who is reading Les Mis in French for the first time with Les Mis Letters (not his first re-read, though), the foreshadowing is not subtle at all. We love to see it :)
I also do like how this budget helps makes Monseigneur Bienvenu's actions regarding Jean Valjean later on much more understandable. He's already for helping ex-convicts already, if only in theory. As we see later, Myriel's lofty thoughts and principles don't always come through to real-life issues, especially when he has a personal bias, but having that mentality of wanting to help out is already very important. It's also very sad, because all the money in the world doesn't help out very much in this case, as we see again and again throughout the book when encountering systemic and societal issues.
Finally, as many others pointed out last year and this year, the fact that Myriel does all of this charitable work at the expense of his sister and his housekeeper, and not even giving them a choice in the matter, is kind of sad.
Not only does this self-sacrificial impulse negatively impact these two, who already don't have much agency in their world, but it's also that he doesn't seem to realize that they may want him to have some things as well. The line "Bon, dit-elle à mademoiselle Baptistine, monseigneur a commencé par les autres, mais il a bien fallu qu’il finît par lui-même" [“Monseigneur began with other people, but he has had to wind up with himself, after all."] really stood out to me.
My friend rightly pointed out that "when self-sacrifice turns into sacrifice of others, you've gone too far," which I think is true in this case and is even more obvious later on. I really wonder where a certain Jean Valjean gets it from... It's a total mystery...
Last parting thoughts: I liked how the relationship between mademoiselle Baptistine and M. Myriel was described in French a lot better than I did in the English version; for whatever reason, it sounded less sketchy and more heartwarming, though I couldn't say exactly why: "Pour cette sainte fille, M. de Digne était tout à la fois son frère et son évêque, son ami selon la nature et son supérieur selon l’église. Elle l’aimait et elle le vénérait tout simplement."
All in all, I'm very glad I was able to listen to this chapter today - I was so engrossed while listening to the story that I totally stood while doing nothing else for more than five minutes just listening to the narrator tell me all about our bestie Monseigneur Bienvenu. 😆
I hope to have more thoughts tomorrow!
