1st Art of 2023, 100 First Artworks and a Look Back (Number 19)
19. Pound Puppy
That's an interesting one. As I mentioned earlier, I had been searching for new ideas to draw. I was still new to Instagram, didn't exactly know what to upload, bounced between characters, landscapes and various scenes, I'd draw something to get my mind off things. It was a different time. And a few months before my Instagram account, I discovered an internet cult classic, Bart the General, an extremely surreal parody of the Simpsons spanning over four wonderful episodes.
youtube
I was exceptionally amazed and fell in love. It was made by Famicon, a UK art collective founded by Leomi Sadler, Stef Sadler, Kitty Clark and GHXYK2. Having checked out their other creations (mainly videos) and being further inspired by them, one of the ideas was to praise Famicon in some artistic way. Unfortunately, my skills and confidence weren't enough to make a full-scale Bart the General homage, a project like this would anger them if I botched it, so I went with something light, choosing a scene from their cartoon Pound Puppy (video below).
youtube
Artwork-wise, it's not perfect by any means, although I made him look more gnarly than he originally appears. Never thought I would get some feedback, but I got it! Famicon co-founder, Leomi Sadler discovered my account and it was a new beginning. As time went on, she liked more pieces I put out, which made me incredibly happy, one of them was even shared in her instastory. With Leomi's eye on me, I became more eager to make art and have fun, and I can't thank her enough. She's an amazing artist herself and I recommend you checking out her work (instagram.com/leomi_sadler/ and instagram.com/tydrax618/) and the work of Famicon (famiconexpress.co.uk/ and instagram.com/famiconexpress/). What they do is terrific, I wish I would have found about them earlier.
Puppy being held by an Animal Crossing bootleg character, more likely also a puppy at some point in life.

Tummy Bugs
by Leomi Sadler
190 x 260mm -- 96 pages -- offset printed -- paperback -- ISBN 978-1-9110811-2-8
“You never know what you’re gonna step in next.”
The stories inside Tummy Bugs are by turn absurd, surreal and funny. Short luridly coloured vignettes transport the reader into a deeply individual landscape, populated by strange creatures, where the line between fantasy, reality and science fiction is constantly shifting.
Leomi Sadler has been a cult figure in the alternative comics scene for over a decade, running the critically acclaimed publisher Famicon Express. Sadler’s commercial illustration work has seen them collaborate with Givenchy, Nike and Vice Magazine as their artistic tendrils continue to extend beyond comics and into the worlds of fashion and contemporary art.
Sadler’s comics work has previously only seen the light of day in glimpses. Small print runs of self-published zines and in prestigious anthologies like Kramer’s Ergot or Lagon Revue. With Tummy Bugs, Breakdown Press aims to bring Sadler’s unique vision to its widest audience yet.
Tummy Bugs was printed by offset lithography at Printon Trükikoda AS in Estonia.
Available to pre-order now from the Breakdown Press online store.

Thanks to the Seattle Art Book Fair, who invited us to create this installation to highlight our recent PoMo Pulp series of art zines for their inaugural fair! From the installation description:
Po-Mo Pulp is a series of zines published by Neoglyphic Media, which will be featured through an exhibition of conceptually-related original work, intended to expand the context for the publications. The visionary nature of the artists involved grinds against the subversive voice of the underground and begs for further exploration along the line of where low-brow or pulp media crosses over into fine art.
The exhibition will feature publications paired with original art and multimedia work on display from artists:
Amanda Vähämäki (Finland) Lale Westvind (Philadelphia, PA) Drew Miller (Albuquerque, NM) Leomi Sadler (London, England, UK) Marc Bell (Vancouver, BC, Canada) Matt Lock (Clifton, NJ) Stefan Gruber (Seattle, WA)
Copies of these zines are available from the Neoglyphic Media webstore!
